Agroecology overcoming poverty - Brazil's achievements in poverty reduction over the past decade have gained much notoriety. Flagship social programmes such as Bolsa Familia have been hailed for lifting an estimated 28 million above the poverty line. With this in mind, this issue of Agriculturas is a timely evaluation of what has been achieved and what new challenges have arisen.
With a particular focus on rural poverty, the stories reported here are premised on an understanding that poverty is a social, cultural and political phenomenon.
