This issue of LEISA China draws our attention to desertification and land degradation - Farmers in the dryland regions, especially the small and marginal farmers, are increasingly getting affected by agricultural decline, poverty and food shortages due to deforestation, soil erosion, loss of soil fertility and biodiversity, and climate changes.
Desertification, better defined as land degradation, is of major and continuing concern to communities living in dry regions. It is the cause as well as the effect of poverty and endangers the welfare and livelihoods of future generations.
The articles in this issue of the LEISA China focuses on community action to combat desertification and land degradation on participatory methodologies to support communities in their efforts to devise effective ways of regaining their livelihood.
