FULLWOOD

FULLWOOD LAUNCHES NEW ENTRY LEVEL HERRINGBONE PARLOUR

F

ullwood has today announced the launch of a new 50-degree herringbone parlour. The new parlour – the Fullwood HB50 – is a swing over, high level parlour designed to provide a high quality solution for increased cow throughput with only one operator. The new Fullwood HB50 parlour’s layout and design incorporates a number of key features which ensure optimum positioning and control of the cow for both cow and milker comfort. “The new parlour offers dairy farmers a distinct set of advantages, chief of which is the continuation of Fullwood’s reputation for heavy duty, robust parlour design,” Les Strickland, Sales Manager for Fullwood Ltd explains.

effective solution for an entry level parlour. It owes its reduced cost to a modular design and the use of pre-assembled equipment. As well as making the parlour easy to install on farm, this modular design also reduces installation and commissioning time – a fact which will not be lost on farmers who want to minimise disruption to their herd when switching to a new parlour. The Fullwood HB50 parlour has also been designed so that all internal equipment is located overhead. This not only reduces operator bending fatigue, but also keeps all ancillary components out of harm’s way. “Throughout the development of the new parlour, our design team has fo-

cused on maintaining our high standards of quality in parlour design; from excellent cow control and operator and cow comfort, to maximum throughput, all at an affordable price,” Mr Strickland continues. “By placing the parlour’s ACRs and pulsation units overhead, the Fullwood HB50 offers excellent reliability and component longevity.” The Fullwood HB50 parlour can be specified with in-parlour feeders, and is also available with Fullwood’s Flowmatic Plus automatic cluster removal system, which features milk let-down stimulation, milk flow rate monitoring and milk/cleaning temperature monitoring. The new parlour also features adjustable cluster-cleaning jet plates, which can be speedily

folded out of the way when not in use for improved operator ergonomics. Several Fullwood HB50 parlours have already been installed and commissioned by Fullwood Packo in Ireland. “The HB50 is perfectly suited to a large percentage of Ireland’s family-orientated dairy farms,” Pat O’Shea, General Manager of Fullwood Packo Farm Services Ltd explains. “With a high throughput, low capital requirement and rapid installation, the new parlour design is the perfect solution for farmers looking for high-end performance at an affordable price. One of those farmers is Miah Twomey from Bandon in County Cork. “I’m completely happy”. with the new parlour,” Mr Twomey explains.

But there are several other key benefits Mr Strickland adds. “The Fullwood HB50 has been designed with affordability in mind, but does not compromise on cows milked per person per hour or on milking performance.” The Fullwood HB50 is a cost

CLAAS

2014 UPDATES BOOST QUADRANT OUTPUTS

2

014 updates to the QUADRANT 2200 ADVANTAGE include the new wider 2.35m XXL pick-up and the inclusion of the ROTO FEED rotor technology from the QUADRANT 3200 in order to handle the higher throughput. Since the first CLAAS QUADRANT baler was launched in 1988, the QUADRANT baler has been popular on account of its ideal size for transport, high bale density and output. For 2014, CLAAS now offers the widest range of bale dimensions and cutter systems on the market, the most popular being the 120 x 70 cm bale, produced by the QUADRANT 3200 and QUADRANT 2200 ADVANTAGE. In total, the CLAAS QUADRANT big square baler product range now includes six models (3400, 3300, 3200, 2200, 2100, 1150) with five bale sizes from 80 x 50 cm to 120 x 100 cm and three different feed and cutting systems, the ROTO FEED (RF), ROTO CUT (RC) and FINE CUT (FC). Wider pick-up for QUADRANT 2200 For 2014, a new feature for the QUADRANT 2200 ADVANTAGE is the XXL pick-up which has a working width of 2.35 m, full

width pick-up auger and pivoting guide wheels. This allows a clean pick-up from even wider straw and grass swaths, especially at high working speeds.

CUT (RC) version of the QUADRANT 3300, this now means that six QUADRANT 3300 variants are available, producing a bale measuring 120cm x 90cm.:

To ensure that material is quickly cleared from the pick-up and high outputs maintained, the QUADRANT 2200 is fitted with the powerful yet gentle ROTO FEED rotor technology from the QUADRANT 3200 which incorporates the heavy-duty PFS system (POWER FEEDING SYSTEM) with continuous-feed auger.

QUADRANT 3300 RF and RC with single axle QUADRANT 3300 RF and RC with tandem axle QUADRANT 3300 RF and RC with steered tandem axle Like the QUADRANT 2200 ADVANTAGE, the QUADRANT 3200 and QUADRANT 3300 are also fitted with a 2.35 m pick-up with a POWER FEEDING SYSTEM (PFS) auger and a double roller crop press.

A unique feature on both the QUADRANT 3200 RC / FC and the QUADRANT 3300 RC is the knife drawer that can be extended on both sides, offering convenient access to the blades for maintenance and blade changes. The blades are arranged in four groups, which can be selected easily with a lever and hydraulically pivoted out. The flexibility provided by the blade groups (RC 25-13-12-6-0 and FC 51-26-13-12-0) enables the balers to be used universally, with high capacity for short straw.

Both balers also incorporate a new spiral rotor with 52 dual tines, which transports the crop more efficiently and quickly to the pre-chamber. The active feed by the rotor has meant that it has also been possible to raise the crop

Other features also include the hydraulically-lowered drop-floor in the cutting chamber, which is lowered automatically if the unit is overloaded so allowing the driver to remove any possible blockages without leaving his seat.

The PFS auger has generously-dimensioned flights and conveys the crop deep into the rotor. The crop flow is therefore homogenised and accelerated, which in turn increases the throughput. In combination with the double Roller Crop Press, this guarantees a clean crop feed even with very wide swaths and at high speeds. Also borrowed from the QUADRANT 3200 is the TURBO FAN knotter cleaning system with 150% more air volume, which protects the six CLAAS knotters from dirt and thereby provides top-quality tying, especially when baling short straw. JOHN DEERE

JOHN DEERE REMOTE DISPLAY ACCESS NOW ACTIVATED

M

annheim, May 2014 John Deere’s Remote Display Access (RDA) system has now been fully activated in Western and Central European countries and selected CIS markets, as part of the John Deere FarmSight strategy. Awarded a SIMA 2013 silver medal for innovation, RDA enables the dealer to remotely view the GreenStar 3 2630 display and the Generation 4 CommandCentre in the cab of a tractor, combine or forage harvester and, if necessary, advise the operator on how to optimise machine and implement settings. “The full-scale availability of RDA is a significant step forward on the journey to expand our range of John Deere FarmSight solutions,” says Christoph Wigger, vice-president sales & marketing for John Deere’s Europe, North Africa and CIS region. “Wireless connectivity between the operator in the field and the dealer results in significant time and input savings and leads to increased machine uptime.” RDA is an integral part of the JDLink telematics fleet management system, which uses the machine’s integrated CAN-bus to view key performance data. For example, JDLink reports and customer recommendations are available to analyse machine use, working hours and average engine load. This enables

the dealer to suggest that the customer should keep an eye on idle machine time, consider increased use of guidance systems and eventually adopt a more fuel efficient driving habit. The dealer can also carry out targeted operator training, even with third parties involved. Likewise, off-site experts can remotely view the driver’s screen for real-time troubleshooting and operator advice in the field. According to John Deere, using RDA technology can reduce the operator assistance cost* by around 30 per cent, as well as improving machine utilisation and performance. The John Deere FarmSight strategy consists of a range of services offered by John Deere dealers based around machine optimisation, logistics optimisation and agronomic decision support.

NEW 7310R TRACTOR MAKES ITS DEBUT AT CEREALS 2014

This top of the range 7R Series model produces 310hp at rated engine speed, and heads five other new, more powerful tractors from 210 to 290hp. For transport and pto applications, the engine’s intelligent power management (IPM) system provides an extra 30hp and is expected to deliver two per cent better fuel efficiency than previous units. John Deere Stage IV engines are the latest development in the company’s building block approach to meeting emissions regulations. As a final step, John Deere has added a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system to its diesel-only engines and increased the fuel pressure to achieve more thorough combustion. Even with the addition of SCR, John Deere aims to reduce total fluid consumption to even lower levels than at present. The company continues to offer improved Stage III B compliant diesel-only engines on both the new 7R and 8R Series ranges for 2014.

Featuring a Stage IV compliant engine for the first time on a European John Deere tractor, the new 7310R model with e23 transmission will be making its Cereals Event debut in June.

UK’S FIRST SELF PROPELLED SILOKING KVERNELAND FEEDER GOES TO WORK IN SOMERSET

T

he UK’s first self-propelled Siloking Kverneland diet feeder has been put to work by Stephen Potter at Whistley Farm, West Harptree, Somerset. Supplied by Kverneland dealer Uphill and Son, the Prestige-spec 1612 model replaces a 20-year old self-propelled feeder. It will be used to provide the farm’s 100-head of pedigree blonde cattle, the Whistley Herd, with a high quality ration. “We feed our blondes every day with specific rations, and the use of a self-propelled feeder has many advantages for us,” explains Stephen Potter. “The milling head lets us keep a tight face at the clamp to avoid secondary fermentation. It also has incredible manoeuvrability, with rear-wheel steering and a compact overall size, which makes it very easy to negotiate our traditional farmyard and its buildings.”

In addition, he says that compared to using a trailed feeder, using a self-propelled machine does save on the cost of buying an additional tractor, telehandler and a silage cutter. “A self-propelled feeder might appear to be a high initial cost, but if it is kept for 20 years for example, its cost becomes very easy to justify with smaller herds,” he says. “As a result, it is not significantly more expensive than a trailed set-up, because a trailed feeder needs additional machinery in support. And, our set-up is based around a one-man feeding system, which is easily achieved using a self-propelled feeder.” Mr Potter and herdsman Pat Hodge believe this latest feeder, with its sophisticated mixing and feeding capability, delivers consistent ration quality for all animals. Kverneland Group UK Ltd, Walkers Lane, Lea Green,

St Helens WA9 4AF – Web: uk.kverneland.com “Giving all our cattle the same quality of forage stops bullying at the feeders,” says Mr Hodge. “And with our plans to develop herd numbers and develop a high meat-to-bone ratio to deliver higher quality meat, the Siloking feeder will become an increasingly valuable tool here at Whistley Farm.”

KVERNELAND LAUNCHES 3232MN MOWER CONDITIONER Customer requests for a lightweight, cost-sensitive mower conditioner

with high output potential have been met with the introduction of the Kverneland Taarup 3232MN - a rear-mounted mower conditioner. Offering a 3.2m working width, the twin-bladed, eight-disc mower uses a nylon tine conditioner, helping to reduce overall machine weight when compared to steel tined versions. Aggressive conditioning capability is maintained by offering two conditioner rotor speeds for the rigidly mounted nylon tines. To maintain compact transport dimensions, the 3232MN comes with a 125-degree vertical folding transport solution that keeps mower weight close to the tractor, improving on-road stability and manoeuvrability – important when negotiating tighter gateways, for example. In addition, the mower conditioner features a non-stop safety break-away system and centre-mount suspension, to maintain in field performance and productivity. Said to require a tractor with a minimum of 85hp to operate, the 8-disc 3232MN is an ideal companion to the firm’s front-mounted 3632FN, creating a 6m combination for use with tractors of 150hp – as demonstrated on the Kverneland plot,

KUHN

FOUR ROTOR RAKE FROM KUHN AT GRASSLAND & MUCK

K

uhn Farm Machinery will demonstrate a new four-rotor rake at this year’s Grassland & Muck event as it launches a number of new grass harvesting machines. The GA 13131 Gyrorake adds to Kuhn’s existing range of rakes and will be on display at Grassland & Muck alongside Kuhn’s semi-mounted GA 8713 and GA 9513 machines. The GA 13131 has a working width of 11.00 to 12.50 metres and is designed for use on farms where a high work output is required. The new Gyrorake features four rotors, each of which holds 11 tine arms, with four tines per arm. Each rotor is mounted on

four pivoting, large diameter wheels for excellent ground contouring and high load bearing. The wheels sit close to the tines to further improve ground following, while Kuhn’s three dimensional rotor suspension system provides even greater stability when working at high speeds. Rotor working height can be adjusted hydraulically as standard, with all four rotors powered by Kuhn’s headstock-mounted hydraulic drive unit which gives the option to increase front rotor speed by up to 20% when working in lighter crops. The four rotors work together to create one perfectly formed central windrow (from 150 to 240 cm in width) and are controlled via a cab-mounted

VT50 series terminal which is ISOBUS compatible and which allows operating sequences to be pre-programmed for easy u-turns. Each rotor can be lifted individually for a perfect finish and to give the machine high ground clearance for ease of manoeuvring and unhindered travel across uneven terrain. The GA 13131 is characteristically robust and utilises Kuhn’s Masterdrive GIII gearbox to reduce power transfer stresses and provide reliable service with low maintenance: the Masterdrive’s patented two-stage design uses bevel and spur gear reduction and is totally enclosed for minimal maintenance – service intervals are every 200 hours.

minimum PTO power output of 95hp. It stands at less than 4 metres in height and folds to just 3 metres in width when fully folded, making road transportation easy and safe.

AMAZONE

5,500 SPECIALIST VISITORS COME TO AMATECHNICA 2014

A

matechnica 2014, held on 22nd May 2014 at Amazone in Hasbergen-Gaste, was again well attended. Throughout the day around 5,500 farmers, agricultural contractors and sales partners came to the event to catch up on the latest Amazone agricultural machinery. On the 12 hectare exhibition site, a varied programme was presented to the visitors, among them more than 1,000 from around the world. In the course of the machinery drive pasts and practical demonstrations, visitors had the chance to evaluate those Amazone's innovations first seen at Agritechnica in practical

operation. Much attention was paid here, above all, to the new Cayron plough; being the first, in-house produced, reversible plough from Amazone. In between the presentations, the programme transferred into the Amazone Active Centre and a 1,500 m³ marquee. Much interest was taken in, among others, a lecture by the retired police chief inspector Heinz Haarlammert on the topic "agricultural machinery in road traffic". Also well attended were the factory tours and the introduction of the current Amazone field trials. Looking back to the past in agricultural technology was the historic ploughing with a team of horses and a Lanz-Bulldog

12 | AGRINEWS | Issue 32 | June 2014

with steel wheels built in around 1936. This Bulldog pulled an old historic plough produced by, in those times, the biggest plough manufacturer, Rudolph Sack from Leipzig. Today, Amazone continues this tradition of plough production at the factory in Leipzig. One highlight following the specialist field programme was the drawing of the prize winners in the tombola. The main prize,

a gold-coloured ZA-M spreader with weighing system was won by Andreas Eckerlin from D-31275 Lehrte in Germany. From this competition, in aid of "World Hunger Help", a sum of 10,000 Euro was raised, including a contribution from Amazone. The end of Amatechnica 2014 concluded with an evening event in the marquee where the band “Country Girls” played.

POULTRY

EFFECTIVE POULTRY HOUSE CLEANING

N

o poultry producer can afford to hinder flock performance by allowing a build up of micro organisms. Even low disease levels drag profits back and skimping on the cleaning routine between flocks is false economy, says Lancashire based cleaning specialist Steve Birchall. “There is no opportunity these days to rest buildings in between flocks Turnaround times are tight and it is, therefore, vital that buildings are not only thoroughly cleaned but disinfected as well, and if there has been a health problem the cleaning and disinfection treatment should take account of it” says Steve, who has been operating a nationwide poultry shed cleaning business for over 25 years. His two teams are equipped to carry out whatever cleaning regime producers require and he suggests a good standard routine for anyone who wants the best safeguard. After the litter has been removed,

the building and any equipment either retained inside or taken out should be power washed at about 2,500 psi with a combined cleaner/sanitiser/deoderiser, which should remove some 80% of micro organisms at this stage. “Older buildings are often more difficult to clean than more modern ones”, says Steve, “However, if you are going to do the job at all then it is worth doing properly and you have to take sufficient time, particularly in breeder or laying units where nest boxes and equipment have been in place for 12 months or more. Broiler units with a six or seven day turnaround are less difficult. However, people who prefer to do what is a rather unpleasant job themselves often get rather jaded before it has been done properly. If there are other enterprises on the farm, they have to keep breaking off to other work. Poultry buildings, whether they are broiler, breeder, layer or

turkey units, not only need to look clean, they must be disease free. The standard routine might, in the event of flock health problems be extended to include powerful virucide. All the products should be biodegradable and safe should there be a run-off into a watercourse. Anyone cleaning poultry units should also have regard for human health as well as that of the birds. When disinfecting and fogging you should wear protective clothing and whether you own a site or are a contractor like myself, you should supply employees with the proper essential equipment. Established in 1985, Steve Birchall Poultry House Cleaning Services provides the ideal cleaning solution. All work is carried out by by experienced poultry house operatives familiar with all types of buildings. Whether a farm specialises in broilers or breeders for free range, the company has the expertise to complete the job to a farmers satisfaction. Steve says “our work is carried out through-out the country”. His sales technique is simply making farmers know they are getting a quality service, “references are available if required and we are happy to talk them through a procedure so they know exact-

ly what is needed and what they are paying for”. Many farmers find it helpful to discuss their requirements. When they ring Steve Birchall they learn that the company uses and supplies three types of foam; Bio Gel, DM and CID-S. Trained by Steve himself the companies operatives wash buildings with 2,500 psi diesel washers. “Talking through each case individually means we can prescribe the right course of action and take the headache of cleaning away from the farmer so he can get on with his day to day work”. The company sells disinfectants and cleaners to the poultry industry with a large section always in stock. All the washers are serviced, repaired and kept maintained by W. Bateman Ltd, and Steve points out that Bateman’s expertise in this field is second to none and is pleased to recommend their quality service. Steve Birchall Poultry House Cleaning Services covers the country, so a team of professional poultry house cleaning operatives are close at hand for all requirements. “if you are finding cleaning a strain, contact us for a price list or just a chat to discuss your needs” closes Steve.

LATEST RECOMMENDED ABER HIGH SUGAR GRASS OFFERS UNRIVALLED YIELD AND QUALITY COMBINATION

T

he latest Aber High Sugar Grass AberWolf, an intermediate diploid perennial ryegrass, enters the independent Recommended Grass and Clover Lists (England and Wales) with an unrivalled combination of grazing yield, conservation yield, extended season performance and quality (D-value). Bred at IBERS Aberystwyth University and marketed by Germinal Seeds, AberWolf excels under grazing management (grazing yield 106% against control varieties with a D-value of 78) and conservation (106% total mean yield,

D-value 71.9 at first cut and 72.6 at second cut). It is also a strong performer both early and late in the grass growing season, with spring production at 111% of controls and autumn production at 114% of controls. “AberWolf is a top ranking intermediate heading perennial ryegrass across the spectrum of criteria covered by the Recommended List,” says Paul Billings, Agriculture Director for Germinal Seeds. “No other perennial ryegrass offers as good a combination of performance for grazing, cutting, early season and late season production, and

it ranks well for ground cover and winter hardiness. “It is the latest variety to emerge from the long term breeding programme at IBERS that is focused on quality traits (most notably higher water soluble carbohydrate) alongside continued dry matter yield and strong agronomic performance. In unofficial development trials, AberWolf ranks as the higher WSC (sugar) variety yet to make the Recommended List.
