Direct sales approach makes Bauer slurry tankers more attractive for large-scale slurry and digestate spreading Bauer is re-launching its high-speci cation tankers in Britain by supplying contractors and large farm operators direct at more favourable prices but with service and parts support still available nationwide through Bauer dealers. “The market for large tankers with specialist application equipment is very competitive with a number of players involved,” says Adrian Tindall, Bauer UK & Ireland sales manager. “Dealing direct with the professional operators most likely to use our machines will enable us to ensure we provide the right features and speci cation for their needs, at prices competitive with other high-quality products.” Bauer tankers available in sizes from 10.5cu m to 24cu m – 10,500-litres to 24,000-litres – are unique in the UK and Ireland for having a hand-made polyester tank mounted on a galvanised steel chassis. The heart-shaped tank cross section results in a low centre of gravity for good stability in hilly elds and on the road, while indents provide ample space for wide and large diameter otation tyres to minimise soil compaction. Using polyester rather than steel saves a signi cant amount of weight over a quality-spec steel tanker – as much as 3 tonnes with the 24cu m model. It also provides a container impervious to corrosion. “That is particularly relevant to farms and contractors involved in handling biogas plant digestate, which can be more corrosive than regular livestock slurry,” notes Adrian Tindall. “Together with

the corrosion-resistant galvanised chassis, it means these tankers clean up really well and can look like new even after a lot of use, which results in strong re-sale values.” The tankers are available with Bauer spiral or centrifugal high capacity pumps giving fast lling and spreading rates. A front-mounted lling arm is available for quick turnarounds at the slurry store and a cleaner working experience for the operator. Application options include a double nozzle spray boom for surface spreading up to 27m wide, and a dribble hose applicator in widths from 9m to 30m with a macerating distributor, hydraulic drip stop and hydraulic folding. A drag shoe applicator with working widths of 5.3m to 21m provides in-crop application of slurry or digestate directly on to the ground; a disc injector in 5.2m to 8m widths places liquid beneath the surface for minimum losses through evaporation and quick resumption of pasture grazing; and a spring tine cultivator injector is available for incorporating slurry or digestate into seedbeds. Chassis options include a cranked single axle for smaller tankers in the range to give an extra-low centre of gravity; rear-steer tandem axles with leaf spring or air suspension – the latter is standard on the triple axle 24cu m model – and four-point rear linkage for a mounted applicator. “With all those options, each tanker is specced and priced individually,” notes Adrian Tindall. “But an 18.5cu m tandem axle machine with 15m dribble bar will be about £70,000; and an auto loading system will add around £6000.”

Disco Max Cut Let’s Go Baling New mower range from Claas

Flexiwrap join Vicon bale challenge

CLAAS has launched a complete new range of 19 mounted and trailed DISCO CONTOUR disc mowers, ranging in working width from 2.60m up to 9.10m, all of which incorporate the revolutionary new CLAAS MAX CUT disc mower bed. The new range of MAX CUT models covers a total of 19 models, ranging from the simplest 2.6m mounted mower up to advanced, ISOBUS compatible, high capacity triples with cutting widths as wide as 9.1m. The new MAX CUT mower bed features a waved shape leading edge, which means the cutting discs can be mounted as close to the front of the bed as possible. In combination with the new, specially formed discs, this means there is a greater overlap between the blades, so creating an enlarged cutting area for optimum cutting quality and ow through the mower. The new MAX CUT mower bed is made from two pieces of pressed steel plate, which are bolted together instead of welded to achieve a high torsional strength. Using a bolted construction also reduces the potential of cracks developing as there are no heat stresses, which are caused during the welding process. In order to achieve a clean cut and avoid soil contamination, extra-wide skids are tted to the underside of the mower bed, which guide dirt and foreign material backwards. There are also additional wear skids and high cut skids available as an option. The satellite drive train of the new MAX CUT is permanently lubricated and maintenance free, and designed so that in lighter crops it can be run at 850 rpm instead of 1000 rpm, which will help reduce fuel consumption by up to 20%. To fully protect the drive train, each mowing disc is mounted using a CLAAS SAFETY LINK module, which incorporates a predetermined breaking point that will shear in the event of a collision, and is easy to replace. To clearly identify the range of model speci cations, type of operation and control systems, the 19 new DISCO models have been divided into ve variants: TREND, CONTOUR, BUSINESS, AUTOSWATHER and DUO. The simpler TREND mower units are operated using the tractor spool valves without any electric control terminal, but if required can be incorporated into the tractor's headland management. The optional individual lifting function is operated using a hydraulic isolator valve, which makes it possible to pre-select the mowing units.

Vicon is to run a demonstration programme throughout the 2015 grass season to highlight the performance, ef ciency and quality of its round baler range. Called the Vicon Bale Challenge, the in- eld demonstration includes the new FlexiWrap balerwrapper combination in addition to the latest generation RV5200 series variable chamber balers. The FlexiWrap baler-wrapper combination being demonstrated is based on the latest generation RV5216 baler equipped with Vicon’s new PowerBind net system and 14-knife SuperCut grass chopping system. First shown at last year’s Grassland event, FlexiWrap is mounted on a twin axle chassis that includes a twin satellite wrapper, offering impressive one-man baling and wrapping output. The baler wrapper combination offers fully automatic controls, plus manual and over-ride options. As the bale is completed and the rear door opened, the wrapper table moves close to the rear of the baler to accept the bale. With the bale positioned for wrapping, baling can then continue while twin satellite arms take care of wrapping. Once complete, the wrapping table is lowered to create a low unloading height. As an option, a bale-onend kit can be tted. Film storage for 10 rolls can be lowered hydraulically for easier change over too. Variable chamber RV5216 and RV5220 produce bales with diameters of up to 1.65m and 2.0m respectively, using ve endless belts and a closed chamber system that affords immediate bale starting. This latest generation of baler gets an all-new net wrap system, plus a new software package for easier selection of bale density. PowerBind injects net directly into the bale chamber, which maintains net tension at all times and delivers repeatable accuracy with consistent net injection. Intelligent Density 3D gives in-cab control of bale density with three pre-con gured bale densities accessed from the control box menu, simplifying change-over from different crop types. Vicon’s Bale Challenge has been introduced to show farmers and contractors just how much investment has been made in product developments and upgrades to its variable chamber balers. It is an opportunity for potential customers to put their own kit head-tohead against the latest baler technology from Vicon.

The PÖTTINGER ‘lightweights’ for versatile operations

PÖTTINGER has extended its range of LION power harrows: the new series is a "lightweight" compared to conventional power harrows and offers two versions - the LION 103 and the LION 103 CLASSIC. The CLASSIC version is available with working widths of 2.50 m with 8 rotors and 3 m with 10 or 12 rotors. The LION 103 features a working width of 3 m with 10 or 12 rotors, or 4 m with 14 rotors. The main advantage of the new series is its reduced weight and the resulting lower lifting power needed. The new gear trough is closer to the front of the machine and slanted to the rear to optimise weight distribution. The gear trough has also been redesigned to include features such as weight-optimised bearing units, integrated tine carriers, large dimensioned tapered roller bearings and labyrinth seals. The cover, which is made out of 3-mm thick aluminium plate, is now slanted. Not only does it look sleeker, it also contributes to reducing weight as well as having the advantage of reducing contamination. LION 103 CLASSIC is the lightweight power harrow series, ideal for small, 4-cylinder tractors. These machines are only available with the CLASSIC gear box for up to 140 hp. The PTO shaft stub is located well back to ensure smooth running and full overlap of the PTO shaft splines. Cooling ns ensure reliable operation even when working long hours. The CLASSIC gearbox has a set transmission ratio and rotor speed. At a PTO speed of 540 rpm, the rotor speed is 185 rpm; at 1000

rpm it is 342 rpm. The CLASSIC gearbox is not tted with a through-shaft. The side plates can be folded up into the transport position to guarantee the transport width is less than 3 metres. These are also lightweight and equipped with an automatic adjustment system so that they ideally adjust to each working depth. The side plates are secured in their limit positions using linch pins. The CLASSIC version also features a simpli ed guide bracket for the levelling board. However, as a consequence it is not possible to t track eradicators to the power harrow. The LION 103 series is equipped with the proven interchangeable gear unit designed for tractors with 180 hp (3 m working width) and 200 hp (4 m working width). These machines thus cover the mid-range tractor class. The interchangeable gear system has the same key features as the CLASSIC version (cooling ns, PTO shaft stub located far back, etc.), and in addition offers a wider range of rotor speeds. By changing the bevel gears, rotor speeds can be varied between 153 and 209 rpm at a PTO speed of 540 rpm and between 283 and 387 rpm at a PTO speed of 1000 rpm. A PTO through shaft is also available as an option on the interchangeable gear unit. Side struts are tted to the LION 403 to provide sturdy support when combined with a seed drill (PÖTTINGER VITASEM or AEROSEM). This series can be tted with all the equipment options available for the LION 102 series. As a result, a wide selection of rear rollers is available to meet all speci cations.

Everyone will agree that accurate application of pesticides is not only desirable but essential whether for the environmental, the consumer or the grower point of view. Accurate and targeted use of pesticides is all part of modern agriculture. That’s why back in the mid 90’s the Chemical Application members of the Agricultural Engineers Association (AEA) devised a test for application machinery to make sure it was working as intended and with a quali ed operator would apply pesticides accurately and on target. In the early years of 2000 this test became the National Sprayer Testing Scheme as one of the main pillars of the Voluntary Initiative. Now NSTS is an accepted part of arable agriculture and requirement of the major crop assurance schemes and supermarket protocols, requiring that farmers and growers have their sprayers inspected annually. Testing pesticide application equipment is soon to become even more important as the Sustainable Use Directive requires that all pesticide application equipment is tested by 26th November 2016. The NSTS is available through a network of test centres who have quali ed examiners available to National Sprayer Testing Scheme. The examiner will charge for the inspection, NSTS have no input into the cost of individual tests; the cost being commercial at the point of use. Additionally machine owners are free to choose their nearest or preferred test centre a list of test centres can be found on the NSTS website www.nsts.org.uk As con rmation of the result of the test the examiner will apply a pass sticker to the machine and give the owner a copy of the test report form. Other copies of the form are returned to NSTS Administration where the information is retained on a database of all tested machines. This information is available to crop assurance Certi cation Bodies for veri cation. Having an NSTS test ensures that the machine is working correctly and capable of delivering the correct dose on target. It also helps to reduce costly downtime and ensures reliability of an important piece of equipment used by farmers and growers. QUADCRATE® attachments are making an Impact We as Farmers all know that Farming is a tough job. Every day we face challenges that test our ability and to make the right choices to deal with them, without costing too much money and to make our Farms more productive/pro table in the process. We on the Allingham Farm have had experiences of many of these challenges, as Cattle and Sheep Farmers ourselves. We understand and can relate to what is needed to enable us to make light work of multiple Farm tasks. The ATV quad bike has become a major tool on our Farm (as it has on many others) its potential is not always utilised by its operators (including my own) until we designed our signature product the award winning QUADCRATE. The Patented QUADCRATE which is foldable and can be attached to the back of any utility ATV bike was designed as a solution to a problem we encountered. With using it we could see so much potential, from carrying a sheep or calf to carrying buckets and bags. With it being an alternative to a trailer, it was able to transport 70 to 80% of the small loads we wanted to carry but if a trailer was needed we made it foldable with a tow hitch on the bottom platform to allow a small trailer to be attached without taking the QUADCRATE off, so we could have the best of both worlds. We found ourselves leaving the QUADCRATE on the bike at all times so when we needed it; it was always on the bike. Our experience in using it, told us that if we carried the QUADCRATE implements attached to our Farm ATV at all times we could 70 to 80% of the time deal with the different issues, so as we met the problems we could deal with them, saving time, labour and money. As you can see from the advert below we have now designed a suite of products from Front and Back Postholders to a Sheep and Barbed Wire unroller which all allow quad operators to utilise the full potential of their ATVs. We have made up different Packages to suit different customers. We

have several other products which are in the R & D stage and are enjoying working with designs to get the products as light and as strong as we can. With us now manufacturing all of the QUADCRATE products in the home farm workshop we have been able to really make sure our products are of a very high standard and also create some local employment. One of our latest products to bring out is called the HILLCRATE (see advert HILLCRATE Package) this is aimed at Hill Farmers who have very steep ground and who do test bikes to their very limit on areas of great steepness. As rolling the bike can easily happen on this type of ground the HILLCRATE is designed to make the ATV safer in the event of this as it would stop the bike rolling on top of the operator. It also can be used to carry a small sheep (35-40kgs) buckets and bags even 2 dogs and the gates fold down to allow easier access into the cage. We at Allingham QUADCRATE also push safety so please everyone always wear your helmet. Over the years we have won several awards which have helped build our pro le including Eircom Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2009 & Best New Innovation with a retail price of less than £10,000 at the Lamma Show 2013. Industry developments and pressure from the supply chain are turning the spotlight on more ef cient cleaning units as a way to increase performance while reducing antibiotics use. The packers and retailers are demanding less independance on the use of antibiotics to control disease so producers need to respond to this. To control disease and maintain production, the industry has to explore and adopt alternative ways to reduce the pathogen risk to birds. Better hygiene practices, based on more ef cient cleaning of housing and equipment combined with strict biosecurity is an obvious starting point. It is entirely logical to get buildings as clean as possible before repopulating them to reduce the disease threat before the new birds arrive. New stock are under stress brought about by combination factors including transport, handling, vaccination and being exposed to new disease threats. The more hat can be done to reduce disease threats, the better. There is a real scope to improve the effectiveness of cleaning of all types of poultry housing but the starting point is a change of mind set. Too many producers regard cleaning as a â&#x20AC;&#x153;must doâ&#x20AC;?, uninteresting and mundane chore, something that has to be done and the sooner it is done the better, however, nothing could be further from the truth. Cleaning should be seen as an integral part of a production system which can have a signi cant impact on performance, costs and pro t. An ef cient well planned and implemented cleaning procedure can reduce the disease threat to birds leading to better performance. It can also save time and reduce costs. An effective routine comprises of two different stages - cleaning and disinfection. Cleaning is essential to remove the environment in which pathogens thrive and to expose them to the subsiquent disinfectant. You can not disinfect dirt

unless soiling is removed, the pathogens will be protected from the disinfectant. The cleaning phase is crucial but this is not a case of taking an ardent approach with a high pressure power washer. While you can blast away some soiling, you will not remove the fats and proteins which make up much of the dirt on the walls and other surfaces. In addition, the use of high pressure creates an aerosol effect which can actually spread the pathogens and make them worse. To achieve an effective clean it is essential to apply a detergent and then to rinse away under low pressure followed by the application of disinfectant. Effective cleaning will help prevent the economic loss associated with outbreaks and is considerably cheaper than the cost of treating an outbreak with medicines. Using chemical detergents ensures that soiling is removed before disinfection resulting in a reduction in bacterial levels prior to restocking, giving the new birds the best possible start. Thorough cleaning based on a two stage routine could have a big impact on future pro ts and turn cleaning from a chore into a pro t driver.

A Mitsubishi dealership in Worcestershire has helped a major signs and graphics specialist deliver on its commitment to lower its carbon footprint. Fields of Bromsgrove sold two Outlander PHEVs to Birmingham–based Hollywood Monster, which is now also looking forward to making signi cant cash savings, courtesy of the world’s rst and award-winning plug-in hybrid SUV. Using both electric and petrol power, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has an electric range of 32½ miles, emits just 44g of CO2 per kilometre, and boasts an of cial combined fuel consumption gure of 148 miles per gallon, which means that no vehicle tax is payable. It’s also eligible for the government’s £5,000 Plug-in Car Grant, and because the Bene t In Kind is just ve per cent, it means a virtual pay rise of several thousand pounds a year for company car drivers. What’s more, for business owners there are savings on National Insurance contributions to be had, plus it quali es for 100 per cent First Year Allowance against business pro ts. Launched in the UK last year, the Outlander PHEV quickly scooped Diesel Car’s Best Alternative Fuel Vehicle award, as well as Business Car’s Best Green Development gong in its Techie Awards. Daren Hollins, Supply Chain Manager at Hollywood Monster, which is the largest signage contractor and wide format printer in the Birmingham region, said: ‘With staff going on the road to speak to clients, check installations and undertake day-to-day business meetings, we were conscious that we were accumulating thousands of miles every year, which has a considerable nancial impact on the business, as well as environmental implications.

‘These new vehicles will play a signi cant role as we try harder to be more eco-friendly in the running of the business. We chose these cars because they look smart, are economical to run, and have a large boot capacity, which is what we need.’ Because of the Outlander PHEV’s ultra-low emissions, it’s exempt from the London congestion charge, and Daren said: ‘We undertake a lot of work in London, so this was another factor that ticked a few boxes for us.’ He added: ‘As part of a government incentive, we will be able to have charge points installed at employees’ homes and we are also aiming to install charging points at our Tyseley headquarters.’ Daren summed up the Outlander PHEV by saying: ‘It not only makes nancial sense, it also makes sense from an environmental point of view.’ Fields of Bromsgrove Dealer Principal Peter Field said: ‘We were delighted that Hollywood Monster decided to buy the Outlander PHEVs but we’re not surprised either, as it just makes so much sense on so many levels. They will certainly be reaping a lot of rewards from them.’ Mark Cooke, Fleet Manager at Fields of Bromsgrove, who took the initial inquiry and arranged the sale, said: ‘The Outlander PHEV is a really great car and it’s driven a lot of people into our showroom who perhaps wouldn’t otherwise have looked at Mitsubishi.
