New Bauer appointment TH White extends it’s Bauer slurry management range.

............................................................................................................................................................................................... One of the largest farm machinery dealers in southern England has expanded the range of Bauer slurry management equipment it supports with a range of advanced spreaders for farm slurry and digestate application. TH White Agriculture operates seven branches, covering an area from Hampshire in the south and Gloucester in the north. TH White Dairy’s slurry equipment specialist, Bob Gallop (pictured above), is based at the firm’s Frome depot in Somerset. “Since becoming a Bauer/FAN dealer three years ago, we’ve seen growing interest in Bauer’s slurry pumps and separators, which perform well and are very durable,” he said. “We’ve now taken the opportunity to add the highspecification tankers to our range to cater for farms with large dairy units or AD biogas plants, and contractors

involved in slurry and digestate spreading.” Bauer UK & Ireland sales manager Adrian Tindall emphasised that throughout the rest of Great Britain these specialist machines are supplied direct, with Bauerappointed dealers looking after service support. “But the TH White dealership has Bob Gallop’s expertise to call on in putting together the right specification for individual users,” he said. “Together with a commitment to stocking both new machines and parts, this made it possible to appoint TH White as a Bauer tanker dealer.” The company’s experience as a Bauer dealer has been positive, with a growing number of farmers sourcing slurry handling equipment and parts. “We keep Bauer’s submersible, shaft and pto-driven slurry pumps

and mixers in stock, along with screw separator screens and a growing quantity of parts,” Mr Gallop said. “And we’ve installed a number of Bauer’s FAN Green Bedding separators on farms wanting to improve dairy cow comfort, while reducing the cost of cubicle bedding.” The slurry spreaders have some unique features, not least a tank hand-made from polyesterreinforced resin that’s impervious to corrosion and is a lot lighter than steel without sacrificing strength and durability. The 26 cubic metyre spreader, for example, is as much as 3,000kg lighter than a steel tanker of equivalent size and specification, which together with large flotation tyres keeps the machine’s impact on the soil to a minimum.

New Holland; New styling

T6 all-purpose tractors introduce new styling and deliver ultimate power

............................................................................................................................................................................................... New Holland Agriculture launches the new T6 allpurpose tractor series that combines ultimate power with advanced technology to deliver unmatched comfort, visibility and manoeuvrability together with more power and performance. The new range also introduces New Holland’s sleek new tractor family styling. The new T6 complies with Stage IVB emissions standards with New Holland’s ECOBlue Hi-eSCR (highefficiency selective catalytic reduction) technology. With this after-treatment system the engine breathes clean air, optimising combustion, torque rise and fuel efficiency. The new T6 engines achieve better performance by maximising power output from each cylinder. The new engine control unit brings the engine to maximum torque faster and holds through to the lower rpm longer, outperforming the previous generation’s engine. The Engine Power Management develops more power and torque according to the load on the transmission, hydraulics and PTO. On the T6.165 it can deliver up to 33hp extra when it’s needed to maintain performance. Engine Speed Management ensures the engine speed is maintained under changing loads, for applications that require a constant PTO speed or to maintain a fixed forward speed in difficult terrain. All these features result in a powerful, responsive and efficient performance that is achieved with the same fluid consumption (diesel fuel and AdBlue) as the previous generation, and with longer refuelling intervals. The T6.175 AutoCommand model at the top of the range, featuring a 175hp four-cylinder engine, meets the requirements of the most demanding customers looking for a premium tractor with excellent power-toweight ratio and CVT transmission. It’s also available in Blue Power exclusive version, featuring New Holland’s most advanced and productive technologies. The Horizon cab provides the operator with the ultimate working environment: from the dual-zone air conditioning to the enhanced instrument panel; from the further reduced noise levels at 69dBa to the Sidewinder II armrest that puts all the controls at the operator’s fingertips in the Auto Command models. In addition to the base seat three new seats choice are available: Comfort, Dynamic Comfort and Auto Comfort. The Comfort seat utilises a low frequency suspension design. The Dynamic Comfort seat features an enhanced low frequency suspension and a variety of comfort enhancing features, such as the automatic shock absorber adjustment, pneumatic lumbar support and two-stage heater. Both seats feature an innovative swivelling backrest designed to provide upper back support while enabling the operator to turn and look

back. The Auto Comfort active seat with incorporated climate control reduces whole body vibration by up to 40 per cent compared to a low frequency seat, while extraction fans within the seat remove moisture, lowering surface humidity and temperature. It all adds up to unmatched comfort. The cab also provides exceptional visibility in all directions with the single-piece windscreen, 5.85 square metre of glass and, for loader work, the highvisibility roof panel. In addition, all T6 models feature standard LED work lights that provide exceptional illumination for after-daylight operation. The base eight LED lights deliver 10,000 lumens, 60 per cent brighter than the work lights on the previous generation. For those wanting to turn night into day the top specification work light package offers the new LED work lights that produce 31,200 lumens, more than five times as bright as their predecessors. The new T6 Series offers five four-cylinder models from 125 to 175hp and a six-cylinder 175hp model. The wheel base of all models is now similar to the previous six-cylinder range at 2,642mm and retains a tight turning radius of 4,300mm. In addition, the SuperSteer front axle offers an unrivalled manoeuvrability that makes all the difference when turning at the headland or working in confined spaces. The longer wheelbase delivers better traction and an exceptionally smooth ride during field operation and transport. For maximum comfort at high transport speeds, the Terraglide suspended front axle cushions the operator from shocks when travelling over uneven surfaces. In the field, it maintains contact between the tyre and the ground, improving traction. The new T6 bristles with features that boost productivity and make it easy to work efficiently. It can be ordered from the factory IntelliSteer ready or with the complete IntelliSteer package installed and ready to use. The Isobus Class II option makes it easy to monitor and control all implements using the tractor’s monitor. Auto Command models are able to interact with the implements further with Isobus Class III. In addition, the new T6 is fully loader ready from the factory, and a choice of New Holland loaders are available. Together the upgraded armrest and electronic midmounts valve makes the T6 a key player in modern mixed farming. The new T6 Series offers a wide choice, with five four cylinder models ranging from 125 to 175hp. The six-cylinder T6.180 tops the range with a maximum torque of 740Nm – the only six-cylinder tractor in this category on the market. The T6 can be specified to match the exact requirements of every farming operation. The proven Electro Command semipowershift offers clutch less gear changes to reduce operator fatigue.

Kuhn new simplified app New fertiliser app simplifies spreader set up

............................................................................................................................................................................................... KUHN Farm Machinery has added a new fertiliser spreader app to its growing suite of smartphone utilities which are aimed at improving the speed and efficiency with which its customers are able to configure and set up a range of KUHN machines. The KUHN SpreadSet app enables users to select from a pre-set range of commonly used fertilisers and automatically calculates the correct spreader settings according to the type of fertiliser being used, desired application rate, spreading width and operating forward speed. “Only by ensuring that their machines have been adjusted

and set-up 100% accurately can farmers ensure that they are spreading fertiliser as efficiently and effectively as possible,” explains Phil Norman, KUHN UK’s Technical Product Support Manager. “The new app has therefore been developed to make it quicker and easier for KUHN customers to adjust their machine’s spreading parameters in accordance with their specific spreading requirements. By providing step-by-step instructions regarding vane angles and drop-point positions, the app makes it simple for users to achieve the optimum spreader set-up.” Other popular KUHN applications include a seed

drill calibration assistant, sprayer nozzle configurator and precision seeding assistant – all of which are available for Android and iOS devices. The SpreadSet application functions without telephone network coverage and is automatically updated with the latest spreading charts as and when new spreaders and fertiliser products become available. The SpreadSet app is currently available to download for free on Android devices and will soon be available to download from the Apple Store. For more information go to www.kuhn.co.uk or visit the relevant app store.

“Attention to detail is the key to profitable cereal production, through careful management of the soil’s productive capacity and by looking after the machinery that works it. It’s taken more than 10 years to get where we are in terms of crop yields and the Challenger has been central to us achieving it. We bought the Challenger 9 years ago and saw the benefits. I would never go back to wheeled machines for primary cultivations, after all the evidence that the use of tracks contributed greatly to achieving the highest possible crop yield. Reduced fuel consumption has also been a welcome feature of the switch to tracks, together with enhanced speed of operations.”

Soil is everything, so we need to take great care of it. You only get one chance and there are no short cuts.

Rapid wins

Finnish long-distance race

T7 Heavy Duty

On board 360 apps available now

...............................................................................................................................................................................................

Rapid was the easy winner in a 10-year trial of direct drilling in Finland, in which 8 different seed drills drilled the same plots of land for an entire decade. Rapid took 5 gold and 3 silver over 10 years by achieving the best harvests. This means EUR 70 extra per hectare for any farmer who chooses Rapid as his seed drill partner. In Finland the machine journal Koneviesti tested a number of seed drills over a 10-year period (2006–2015) for direct drilling in large plots at an agricultural college outside Turku. The results clearly show which seed drill offers the most stable results and the highest net yields over a whole decade. Over the 10 years during which a mixture of autumn and spring cereals, peas, field beans and spring oilseed rape were cultivated, it was Rapid that distinguished itself. In 8 of the 10 years Rapid brought medals home – 5 gold and 3 silver. The remaining 2 years Rapid came in 4th, just off the podium. Rapid performed consistently well every year without falling through at any point. This direct drilling trial in Finland thus demonstrated that Rapid offers a high chance of plants growing. Over the 10-year period 2006-2015, Rapid as the only seed drill produced over 5000 kg per hectare. That is actually just over 400 kg more than the average performance of the 5 other machines that were also in the trial over the same period. Converted into monetary terms, this extra harvest using Rapid means extras income of EUR 70 per hectare at an average price of EUR 160 per ton. Seen over several years and many hectares, the extra income constitutes a significant contribution to the coffers for growers who choose Rapid as their seed drill and partner for spring and autumn cultivation. The direct drilling trial is now ending after 10 years in the form it has taken up to now, but in future there will continue to be establishment and soil cultivation method trials on the same test plots. With 10 years’ experience, we can in any case be sure of one thing – direct drilling is now also documented on Rapid’s CV.

............................................................................................................................................................................................... Supplementing finisher lambs which are grazing fast growing spring pastures, with selenium can be a major challenge but years of research by a Suffolk-based animal health company is helping farmers to achieve this. Lambs can’t store selenium and a shortfall can limit growth rates and can cause white muscle disease, a condition which affects the muscles, especially at turnout. This condition is more likely to be seen when stock graze on fast growing grass. There had been a gap in the market for a product that could deliver the trace element needs of young lambs finished off on grass.

Customer testimonial

Animax Ltd has spent years researching this, leading to the development of the Tracesure® Lamb Finisher bolus. The revolutionary new singlebolus product not only contains high levels of selenium but iodine and cobalt too; it is the smallest true bolus on the market capable of releasing these trace elements over a period of several months. In Lancashire, hill farmer Jim Walker finishes his Mule wether lambs solely on grass. Mr Walker lambs 600 Swaledale ewes and around 180 are lambed to purebred Swaledales. Paying attention to the trace element needs of his fat lambs is a

cornerstone of Mr Walker’s system. He says there is nothing to beat a good Mule wether for weight gains and this year not only did his wethers weigh 1kg more at slaughter, but they did so without the need for concentrates. The only change to the system was bolusing lambs with Tracesure®. “This year I only fed the wethers grass, in the past they have been on concentrates for two or three weeks,’’ says Jim, of Saddle End Farm, near Chipping, Preston. “Previously I used a trace element drench but that didn’t last. The bolus keeps them topped up for up to five months after administration.’’

“We have seen a big improvement in our stock since we started using Tracesure. We used to use a mineral drench but we weren’t seeing a benefit from it so two years ago we started using Tracesure.’’ - David Wilson.

Kubota showcase leading solutions RTV-X900 to the rescue

............................................................................................................................................................................................... Kubota is showcasing a full range of its market leading machinery solutions at this year’s Balmoral Show. This will include its consumer lawncare range and its professional mowers and compact tractors, right up to its higher horsepower agricultural tractors, its range of RTV utility vehicles and a number of its leading mini-excavators. The company’s machines are renowned amongst end-users for providing a high performance, efficient and reliable solution that gets the job done, time after time, with a host of features to maximise user comfort and machine productivity, all powered by Kubota’s world leading diesel engines. Taking centre stage for Kubota at the show will be the company’s recently launched M7001 Series, which will take centre stage on Kubota dealer D.A Forgie’s stand. The M7001 range is the cleanest, most technical and powerful tractor the company has ever built, available in three models from 130HP to 170HP (M7131, M7151 and M7171).

22 | April 2016 | AgriNews

Kubota’s RTV-X900 utility vehicle is the latest addition to the crew at Station 60 of Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service. The Urban Search and Rescue team have found the RTV invaluable in helping them carry out their duties in the largely urban counties where woodlands can prevent a fast response from larger vehicles. Jon Worsley, Group Manager Specialist Capabilities & Local Risk Manager, said: “The RTV has been a fantastic asset to our fleet, it’s reliable, well-built and is remarkably cost-effective. “Since its arrival at the station just over a year ago, we’ve used it for a range of applications including moving high volume pumping equipment over rough terrain such as that in Woodbury Common, as well as for clearing snow out of the way at the station during the bouts of bad weather we had earlier last year.” The purchase of the RTV has also been a handy addition to the fleet when needing to transport personnel off-road during training days, a crucial factor when testing out how quick their response would be during a rescue mission in woodland areas, through water or on higher ground. Jon continued: “Our search and rescue team get called out to hard to reach areas that aren’t always suitable for vehicles to access safely. With the RTV we can get to the scene quickly and potentially prevent a person, or in some cases animals, from getting into further danger.” Kubota’s RTV-X900 has been specially designed to meet the evolving demands of the market and is increasingly being specified by those involved in the emergency services. Its powerful 21.6HP diesel engine and variable hydraulic transmission ensures dependable performance in the most challenging of weather conditions or terrain.

Biolink Limited All about us..

............................................................................................................................................................................................... Biolink Limited evolved from a very modest start in 2007. Originally the company was born by merging three small companies - Biolink Systems Ltd, operated by David Carter who previously work in the Middle East for Antec, Biolink Sales Ltd which was Biolink Systems largest distributor owned by Paul Richardson and MicroShield Solutions Ltd, a company specialised in supplying the smallholder market owned by Derek Gray. Merging these three companies resulted in a wealth of experience but still a small turnover. Nine years on and the company is unrecognisable. Having acquired its contract manufacture site in 2011 Biolink Limited now manufactures all its own products as well as toll manufacturing for some of the largest global names in biosecurity. Turnover is now over £3m with the vast majority of sales to the UK poultry market. In July 2014 the company made a leap forward onto the international stage when David Carter sold his share in the business to Theseo S.A.S. Theseo is a new name but has a long history of supplying TH4 and TH5 to agriculture. In addition to offering Biolink a global distribution network for its products, Theseo brings the products and experience of its parent company, Avril Group. Avril Group owns and operates over 200 companies solely involved in agriculture and animal welfare. This gives Biolink the unique and enviable position of having a string of new and innovative products queued up to launch in the UK. Theseo chose Biolink to invest in because of its history of innovation and unique approach to biosecurity. For

years biosecurity has been seen as a necessary expenditure, an insurance policy to defend against disease. Over the last two years Biolink has worked to change that perception showing that the best biosecurity can in fact give a sizeable return! The driving force behind this work is the “Platinum Programme”. The Platinum Programme is a terminal disinfection programme consisting of three stages. BioTurbo Plus, high foaming powerful detergent which is also capable of removing calcium from drinkers without using acid, BioShield P, the best balance of glutaraldehyde and quaternary ammonium and Bi-oo-Cyst, one of the most powerful phenolic disinfectants on the market.

dilution. However, the aim of the Platinum Programme is not to eliminate cocci in the shed but just to reduce the challenge to the bird.

The table below shows that the use of Bi-oo-Cyst and BioShield P in the same programme covers every type of disease challenge faced by a poultry farmer.

The Platinum Programme is now rapidly being adopted by broiler farmers across the country showing a constant lift in performance on even the best performing farms.

The key to the success of this programme is not just the total coverage of all poultry diseases but the development of using Bi-oo-Cyst every time in the terminal disinfection programme. Historically Bi-ooCyst would be used once or twice a year during the worst cocci challenge season at a 1-30

Cocci is always present, the coccidiastat in the feed ensures the bird survives a cocci infection but, as farmers know, the growth plane nearly always slow down during the typical cocci challenge period (day 20-28). Using Bi-oo-Cyst at even 1% reduces that challenge meaning you are feeding the bird to grow and not wasting energy fighting the challenge. In a recent 10 million bird study over multiple crops and farms Biolink have shown an average 30 point lift in EPEF.

If you are not already using the Platinum Programme please contact Biolink Limited info@ biolinklimited.co.uk or call 01759 303444 and set up a trial to prove it to yourself. With this kind of return on investment you can’t afford to ignore it!

We are at your service! Lubing - The market leader

............................................................................................................................................................................................... We are at your service! The market leader When Ludwig Bening founded his engineering company on 15 May 1949 in Barnstorf, he could not have guessed that 67 years later the name LUBING (derived from the first and last name of the mechanical engineer), would have a worldwide reputation among breeding and livestock farmers, and be synonymous for highly specialized Drinking-, Conveyor- and Climate-Systems. LUBING is regarded as a market leader and is always striving to meet the high expectations with its qualified staff, continuous high quality and trend- setting innovations. Ten subsidiaries and 34 representative agencies abroad speak for themselves, as well as the fact that the former three-man business enterprise now has approx. 180 employees in Germany alone. 67 years of development! LUBING produced the first nipple drinkers for laying hens and pigs in 1967. In the years to follow the production of Drinking-Systems for poultry and pigs was expanded and automated. The combinipple with its plastic housing was developed and patented.

In 1971, the first representative agency abroad was authorized in France and finally, on 1 September, the company LUBING Int. SARL with French and German shareholding was founded. LUBING companies were also established in England and Spain in 1976. In addition, the production of cross-conveyor systems for the conveying of eggs was started and with that the company’s second large area of production. In October 1977, the subsidiary BARKU Kunststofftechnik GmbH & Co. KG was founded in Barnstorf. From then on all pipes, profiles and component parts for the LUBING group were produced in-house. The 1980s saw a steady growth in exports to the United States, Australia and Arab countries. In 1986, LUBING expanded into the production of floor watering systems and two years later LUBING Systems Corp. was founded in the United States (Woodstock). In 1993 LUBING China was founded; one year later LUBING System SRL in Italy and in 1995, the first production joint venture was set up in India (Puna), leading to the establishment of LUBING Systems PVT Ltd.

Hurlby Grange Farms

Poultry special!

............................................................................................................................................................................................... We added the poultry unit to our business five years ago, with a capacity of 16,000, currently Lohmann Classic birds. We are a family run business with three generations working together. My father Tony Reynolds has farmed for many years and is very involved in Conservation Agriculture. Both our children Tess and Sam are full time employees, with Sam involved mainly on the arable side, and Tess working on a separate family unit in Leicestershire involved in both arable and Beef. We practice Sustainable husbandry described as Conservation Agriculture (CA). In essence this requires us to farm without moving the soil at all, resulting in vastly improved soil

fertility over time. The increase in the worm population has encouraged the population of worm eating birds and has encouraged all manner of ground nesting birds, eg, Lapwings, Yellow Hammers and Sky Larks reversing the National trend. The brown hare population has increased fivefold since we began some 10 or 12 years ago. The free range unit supplies the farm with 100% of the phosphate and potash it now requires and 20% of the Nitrogen. We maintain 20% of the farm for overwintered stubbles which provide shelter and food for wildlife. We also grow 10% of the farm with leguminous nitrogen fixing crops to help the environment and sequester

Carbon. We have noted an increase in soil organic carbon from 2% 10 years ago to 4.8% five years ago and currently approximately 6%, a very dramatic increase. The farm is currently in the last year of ELS and in cooperation with neighbouring farms we are applying for acceptance in the new mid-tier environmental system. We host many farm visits, showing around 300 visitors per year the sustainable farming system and the Free Range Egg Unit. This year as well as half a dozen parties from England, we have had farmers from America, Australia, Denmark and France and in October we will be having a party from Portugal. We have a dedicated lecture room we built to enable us to host these visits and a purpose built trailer to take parties around the farm. We have for the past few years had students from Reading, Newcastle and Nottingham Universities conducting research projects into various aspects of Sustainable Agriculture. We are currently reviewing the place that Free Range plays in our farming system after 5 years. This time we look upon as a very considerable learning curve as to the welfare and efficiency of Free Range Egg production. The review is indicating that a second house will fit into the system. We believe the integration of all aspects of our farm into an environmentally friendly, sustainable business is the way forward and we always enjoy showing visitors around, and they especially like to see our Poultry House, which for most it is the highlight of their trip. New innovations at 2016 Fair

................................................................................................. Innovation and ideas are the driving force behind development of the livestock industry, and visitors to this year’s British Pig & Poultry Fair are sure to get plenty of both. For the first time ever, the biennial event will feature an Innovation Trail, whereby visitors can easily identify new products and developments. “With producers’ time so precious, we decided to create the Innovation Trail to make it easier for visitors to plan their day and take home fresh ideas to benefit their business,” says Alice Bell, Fair Organiser. “All the innovations featured have been recently launched, so are truly new to the market and include some really exciting developments.” Visitors will be able to compare a range of different renewable energy options, as well as energy saving devices such as new clip-on LED lighting. There will also be air purification systems and climate controls, new farrowing accommodation and aviary systems, piglet starter feed and a variety of animal health products. “With 60 new products and ideas featured in the Innovation Trail, there is sure to be something for everyone,” adds Miss Bell. “There are new straw bale spreaders, water dosing systems and trailed high pressure washers, alongside no-needle injectors, dual-dose syringes and novel red mite insecticides. There’s even a new egg box that doubles up as a toy for young children, adding value to the final end of the market.” Although some products are specifically aimed at poultry or pig producers, others are suitable for both industries. And there’s often a crossover between the industries, as pig producer Robert Lasseter has discovered. “I hate missing the Pig & Poultry Fair, especially as it’s only held every two years,” he says. “I always go round the poultry area too – we’ve got a lot to learn from those guys.” Proud to be associated with Liz and Clive Patrick.

Poultry news

By Chris McCullough

............................................................................................................................................................................................... Investigations into the bird flu outbreak in Scotland earlier this year have found it was caused by indirect contact with wild birds. The outbreak on a poultry farm near Dunfermline earlier this year was said to be a ‘mild case’ and that tests concluded it was a different strain of H5N1 to others discovered in Europe. Although there have been no more outbreaks of avian influenza in Scotland, poultry farmers and others who keep poultry have been urged to be vigilant as the disease is constant in the wild bird population. Sheila Voas, Scotland's Chief Veterinary Officer, said: "Investigations have concluded that indirect contact with wild birds is the most likely source of the case of very mild avian influenza near Dunfermline. “Tests also found it was a different strain of H5N1 to those previously seen on the continent. "We know that infections such as this constantly circulate in wild bird populations at a very low level, and therefore remain a constant, low-level threat to poultry in Scotland. “That is why I am writing to all registered poultry keepers in Scotland with advice about how to maintain good biosecurity on their farm.” Ms Voas made comment just after the results of the bird flu investigation were released as well as details of a new animal welfare strategy. She added: “As demonstrated in the Dunfermline case, the speed of response is absolutely crucial in containing and controlling infection when it does occur. “The Scottish Government's new animal health and welfare strategy will help ensure our

livestock industry is as prepared as it can be for just such an eventuality and, even more importantly, is taking every available step to prevent an incursion in the first place." Rural affairs secretary Richard Lochhead said: "Scotland is renowned for high standards of animal health and welfare. They are the foundation of our £1.6 billion livestock industry which supports 35,000 jobs. “We must therefore do all we can to safeguard animal welfare and protect ourselves from the threat of disease. "Working with industry, Scotland has already achieved Officially Tuberculosis Free Status for cattle, and reduced exposure to Bovine Viral Diarrhoea in our cattle herds from 40 per cent to 12 per cent. “This is alongside the excellent developments in traceability of sheep and pigs that have been achieved with the ScotEID system. "But we cannot be complacent, as demonstrated by the recent outbreak of very mild bird flu at a broiler-breeder unit near Dunfermline. “It is thanks to the company and its private vet that the infection was caught at a very early stage which undoubtedly was a major factor in preventing its spread and ensuring it could be quickly stamped out. "This isolated case highlights the importance of constant watchfulness and good biosecurity, and the need for individual keepers, industry and the authorities to continue to work together. “The new animal health and welfare strategy set outs how we will do this over the coming months and years."

Around 17.5 million birds are slaughtered each week in the UK’s poultry industry generating over £6billion worth of sales on an annual basis. Around half of all the meat consumed in the UK is in fact poultry meat, the same amount as all the beef, pork and lamb combined. It’s a very face paced, modern industry in the UK that produces around 875 million chickens, 17 million turkeys, 16 million ducks and 250,000 geese a year. Just over 73,000 people are supported by the poultry industry which has 2,500 poultry farms all over the UK as well as 30 food productions sites and slaughterhouses. As consumption of poultry meat increases so too does the pace of the industry resulting in the UK having some of the most modern production facilities in the world. It is common for production companies to have their own feed mills and rendering plants, and cover all steps of the supply chain from breeding through to processing. The majority of birds are from breeds that are best suited to thrive in indoor systems. In fact, around 95 per cent of British chickens and turkeys are reared in large specially-designed houses. Birds reared for meat are very different from breeds of birds kept for laying table eggs. From being day-old chicks right up to the day of slaughter, the birds can roam throughout the house on fresh litter of chopped straw or wood shavings. Rearing birds indoors helps to protect them, not only from the elements and predators, but also from diseases harmful to the birds and from bacterial infections in the environment.

Electric fencing and poultry farming

...............................................................................................................................................................................................

The availability of electric fencing has transformed free-range poultry keeping. It is arguable that without it, the keeping of extensive, free-range commercial poultry flocks would never have happened. Electric fencing is extremely portable and versatile; it may be used on its own for both permanent and temporary fencing and has been used around the world to control every mammal in some guise or other. It is cheaper, easier to erect, more effective and far safer than barbed wire and is a fraction of the cost of a fox-proof wire mesh fence. An adequately designed and constructed electric fence works by the combination of a weak physical barrier (the fence) and a strong psychological imprint (the 6000v sting) created in the mind of the animal. An energiser attached to the fence wires produces a short but painful sting when touched by the animal, similar to a sharp slap. The low amperage (about 150milliAmps) and short duration (about 1/300th. of a second) results in a sharp but safe sting that then creates a psychological barrier that the animal associates with the fence and discourages it from touching again. A "wimpy" energiser WILL give you a wimpy fence. Foxes and poultry will think a fence is a joke without a strong bite and they'll walk right through it. Please invest in one that puts out lots of power. During a wet year, there may be lots of plant growth touching the wires, that is when the extra capacity will power through the casual vegetation and assist in maintaining a good fence. There are two basic systems for erecting an Electric fence. Of these the lightweight netting system is by far the most popular. This can be dismantled, bundled up and reerected further on very rapidly so is effective at allowing poultry access to specific grazing areas, as well as excluding a fox. This then 36 | April 2016 | AgriNews

allows areas of grass to re-generate and be rejuvenated ready for using again. The netting is made of polyethylene and stainless steel conducting twine and is erected with support poles and ground spikes. The bottom line in contact with the ground is not energised to prevent leakage of the electric current. There are a variety of heights and lengths available. Numerous trials have taken place both here in the UK and America that prove the effectiveness of an electric fence in preventing a fox from accessing its' target. An electric fence can also be added to existing runs to stop predators climbing or digging into the enclosure. A permanent poultry run can be re-enforced and protected from predators by adding 2-3 lines of electrified wire supported by off-set insulators screwed into the posts so that the wire is held about 6 inches off the fence. One wire is situated at the bottom of the fence about 6 inches off the ground. This will stop foxes etc from digging under. the second may be at the foxes nose height. All animals use their nose to investigate anything so make it easy for them to touch it. the third will be at the top . These two will stop them climbing over the fence. ( A tip is to connect the wire mesh fence to your earth system so if a fox climbs up he will still be liable to a shock when he touches the top wire) Having been based in Central Africa since 1980, Agrisellex UK has been consulting and supplying electric fencing in Europe since 2006. We have consulted on restricting bears from Siberian oil fields, releasing wolves in Italy, human/elephant conflict in Kenya and West Africa as well as supplying and assisting the RSPB, Natural England and Sandringham Estate with various projects. Agrisellex offers a very wide range of products to suite any situation.

Words of wisdom

From Steve Birchall Poultry Services Limited

............................................................................................................................................................................................... Industry developments and pressure from the supply FKDLQ DUH WXUQLQJ WKH VSRWOLJKW RQ PRUH HIĆ“ FLHQW cleaning units as a way to increase performance while reducing antibiotics use. The packers and retailers are demanding less independance on the use of antibiotics to control disease so producers need to respond to this. To control disease and maintain production, the industry has to explore and adopt alternative ways to reduce the pathogen risk to birds. %HWWHU K\JLHQH SUDFWLFHV EDVHG RQ PRUH HIĆ“ FLHQW cleaning of housing and equipment combined with strict biosecurity is an obvious starting point. It is entirely logical to get buildings as clean as possible before repopulating them to reduce the disease threat before the new birds arrive. New stock are under stress brought about by combination factors including transport, handling, vaccination and being exposed to new disease threats. The more hat can be done to reduce disease threats, the better. There is a real scope to improve the effectiveness of cleaning of all types of poultry housing but the starting point is a change of mind set. Too many producers regard cleaning as a “must doâ€?, uninteresting and mundane chore, something that has to be done and the sooner it is done the better, however, nothing could be further from the truth. Cleaning should be seen as an integral part RI D SURGXFWLRQ V\VWHP ZKLFK FDQ KDYH D VLJQLĆ“ FDQW LPSDFW RQ SHUIRUPDQFH FRVWV DQG SURĆ“ W $Q HIĆ“ FLHQW ZHOO SODQQHG DQG LPSOHPHQWHG cleaning procedure can reduce the disease threat to birds leading to better performance. It can also save time and reduce costs. An effective routine comprises of two different stages - cleaning and disinfection. Cleaning is essential to remove the environment in which pathogens thrive and to expose them to the subsiquent disinfectant. You can not disinfect dirt

unless soiling is removed, the pathogens will be protected from the disinfectant. The cleaning phase is crucial but this is not a case of taking an ardent approach with a high pressure power washer. While you can blast away some soiling, you will not remove the fats and proteins which make up much of the dirt on the walls and other surfaces. In addition, the use of high pressure creates an aerosol effect which can actually spread the pathogens and make them worse. To achieve an effective clean it is essential to apply a detergent and then to rinse away under low pressure followed by the application of disinfectant. Effective cleaning will help prevent the economic loss associated with outbreaks and is considerably cheaper than the cost of treating an outbreak with medicines. Using chemical detergents ensures that soiling is removed before disinfection resulting in a reduction in bacterial levels prior to restocking, giving the new birds the best possible start. Great offers to warm to Across the Mitsubishi vehicle range

............................................................................................................................................................................................... CIRENCESTER – Mitsubishi dealers across Britain have great offers to warm to across the brand’s fabulous vehicle range now that the warmer weather is here – from the Mirage city car to the iconic L200 pick-up. The Mitsubishi Mirage The Mirage has been designed to be just as at home on busy city streets as it is on country lanes. It’s got a winning blend of chic styling, exceptional comfort and low running costs. Features include heated front seats, cruise control with limiter and the Mitsubishi Multi Entertainment System (MMES) – which includes satellite navigation plus a rear-view camera. The model also boasts electric folding door mirrors with integral indicators. And the Mirage has equally fabulous Mitsubishi Personal Lease offers from £135 a month* as well as a 5.9% APR representative** PCP deal, too. Available as a manual or an automatic, the Mirage, which can seat five people, has a boot capacity of 235 litres, while the 1.2 three-cylinder petrol engine is Euro 6b-compliant and delivers a wallet-friendly 65.7mpg. Emissions are just 100g/km CO2 for the manual and 99g/km for the CVT, which means owners don’t pay any vehicle tax and there’s no liability for the London congestion charge either. The Mitsubishi ASX Available with a choice of powerful, yet efficient, petrol and diesel engines, the awesome ASX crossover offers impressive fuel economy but still packs plenty of pulling power. It also boasts a fivestar Euro-NCAP safety rating and is available as a four-wheel drive. It’s available with a £1,000 VAT-

inclusive deposit contribution (at participating dealers only) towards a 5.9% APR representative** PCP deal. Among the specifications, the entry-level ASX ZC has steering wheel audio controls, privacy glass and a premium front centre arm rest/console box. The ASX ZC-M has a number of key specification items to create a fresh new look and feel, including new 18-inch two-tone alloy wheels plus DAB digital radio, while the range-topping ASX ZC-H has a factory-fitted Mitsubishi MultiCommunication System, boasting a seven-inch high-definition touchscreen display, sat nav, reversing camera, DAB plus FM/ AM/LW radio, CD players and SD card compatibility. All engines in the new range meet the latest Euro 6 emission regulations. The Mitsubishi Outlander The Outlander diesel has a new and amazing £2,000 customer loyalty offer available to any existing Mitsubishi vehicle owner, not just Outlander owners, at participating dealers***. Among its many enhancements, the latest Outlander diesel has had 40 noise, vibration and harshness improvements. As well as an improved appearance, which includes new-look LED headlamps and new rear lamps, ride and handling have been made even better, while the cabin interior has increased levels of comfort and safety. It has a five-star Euro-NCAP safety rating, boasts incredible fuel efficiency and low CO2 emissions, and is lighter, quieter and more refined than ever. What’s more, there’s a fantastic 5.9% APR representative PCP finance offer as well**.

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV The multi-award-winning Outlander PHEV is the nation’s favourite choice of plug-in vehicle, with Mitsubishi having sold more than 15,000 of them in the UK since the SUV’s launch here in 2014. And with the latest model, fuel economy has been improved – up from 148mpg to 156mpg – while CO2 emissions are down from 44g/km to 42g/km. The Outlander PHEV, which continues to benefit from a 5.9% APR representative** PCP deal, can travel 32½ miles in electric mode alone – more than enough to accommodate most daily average journey distances. Together with its petrol engine, it has a combined range in excess of 500 miles. The vehicle is exempt from vehicle tax plus the London congestion charge and qualifies for the Government’s Plug-in Car Grant and Plug-in Van Grant. The Mitsubishi Shogun The legendary Shogun continues to have a 5.9% APR representative** PCP offer on the passenger vehicles, making the 4x4 that’s ready to tackle anything a truly attractive proposition. Originally launched in 1982, the Shogun brought to the world a whole new breed of vehicle: a 4x4 that was tough enough to go where others feared to tread yet enjoyed the sort of sophisticated specification more normally associated with top-end saloons. Needless to say, it’s changed and been updated since then, but it’s still a dyed-in-the-wool, no-holdsbarred, authentic off-roader, built to outlast the opposition. Seventy per cent of all new Shoguns are bought by former Shogun owners – do you need convincing any further about its merits?
