Auctioneering Adventure Raises Funds for Rural Charity

............................................................................................................................................................................................... A school leaver is celebrating completing his final examinations in a slightly unusual way this summer; he is currently travelling the length of Britain visiting 25 livestock markets, raising money on the Scottish leg for rural charity, RSABI. Jack Walton, son of Scotland rugby international Peter Walton, is travelling from Dingwall Market in the North Highlands to Truro Market in Cornwall over a six-week period, with the aim to auction a pen of sheep at each mart; the sale commission for that pen being donated to RSABI, and on arrival in England, RABI. Money raised from the auctioneering adventure in Scotland will go towards RSABI’s current campaign, Help us help them, that aims to raise £150,000 to help put a stop to rural poverty. RSABI supports people who have worked in agriculture, crofting and other land-based industries who are now experiencing hardship. Jack’s journey will take him to 25 different livestock markets

along the length of Scotland and England, including Stirling, St Boswells and Longtown. He began at Dingwall on the 19th of July, and hopes to finish at Truro Livestock Market on the 7th of September. The full list of markets he will be visiting in Scotland is: Tuesday 19th July – Dingwall Livestock Market Wednesday 20th July – Forfar Livestock Market Thursday 21st July – Stirling Livestock Market Monday 01st Aug – St Boswells Paul Tinson from RSABI met Jack at Stirling Agricultural Centre and Market saying: “Jack’s Journey is an incredibly innovative idea from this young man and a hugely welcome contribution to our latest fundraising campaign. We are grateful to Jack and everyone involved at the various marts up and down the country.” He continued:

“Jack is genuinely passionate about the industry, and is clearly set for a bright future as an auctioneer in the future.” Jack Walton said about his fundraising journey: “For as long as I can remember I have loved attending livestock markets with my grandfather, and I was always itching to have a go from the rostrum. I am loving every minute of the adventure and the chance to raise awareness of agriculture with the wider public too as I continue my journey south.” Pending exam results, Jack is heading off in September to the Royal Agricultural University to study Rural Land Management, with the aim of fulfilling his dream to become a professional auctioneer. Extended Range

John Deere expands Gator range for 2016

............................................................................................................................................................................................... John Deere has added three new models to its ever growing Gator crossover 4x4 utility vehicle range for 2016, including a more affordable mid-size machine. The Gator XUV 590i and 590i S4 fourpassenger utility vehicles are designed for customers seeking a combination of performance and comfort, with a range of customisation and attachment options. Equipped with a powerful twin-cylinder 32hp, 586cc petrol engine and independent fourwheel suspension, the XUV 590i can accelerate quickly to a top speed of over 45mph. Both models are equipped as standard with power steering and an 875W/65A alternator to run auxiliary attachments such as lights, winches and sprayers without the risk of discharging the battery. Ground clearance is a minimum of 267mm (10.5in) on the 590i, which has a load capacity of 363kg and a towing capacity of 499kg. The S4 version has a ground clearance of 236mm (9.3in), a load capacity of 544kg with the rear passenger seat folded down, and is also capable of towing up to 499kg. Drivers and passengers alike will appreciate the low noise and vibration levels of these new Gators, which are achieved by isolating the powertrain and utilising sound-dampening material around the engine and continuously variable transmission (CVT) intakes. Other features on these two models include class-leading ergonomics and legroom, a large 28-litre fuel tank and a backlit instrument cluster that provides vehicle information such as speed, engine rpm, fuel level, coolant temperature and warning lights that include power steering plus seat belt and maintenance reminders. In addition to the two XUV 590i Gators, the new mid-size XUV 560 is aimed at those Smithfield Tractors Limited Llanelwedd, Builth Wells Powys, LD2 3SR t: 01982 553221 www. smithfieldtractors.co.uk

looking for a more affordable 4x4 utility vehicle but with the same levels of comfort and versatility expected of John Deere’s popular Gator range. Like the XUV 590i twoperson Gator, this model also has a minimum ground clearance of 267mm (10.5in), plus load and towing capacities of 363 and 499kg respectively. Features on this machine include an ergonomic operator station, a quiet 16hp, 570cc V-twin petrol engine providing swift acceleration to a top speed of 28mph, independent four-wheel suspension and multiple attachment options. The carburettor is tuned for rapid throttle response, reliable coldweather starting, smooth mid-range power delivery and quiet idling. The XUV 560’s roll-over protective structure provides easy entry and exit, three-point seat belts and side grab handles to ensure the operator and passenger are safe and well protected. This model also offers sealed underhood storage and features a large, one-piece cargo box made of a composite material that eliminates rust and dents and reduces noise. The truck-like tailgate can be opened with one hand, or removed for easier cleaning of the cargo area and to carry longer items.

Deutz-Fahr appoint new dealer in arable heartland

Deutz-Fahr has appointed the well establised Royston-based agricultural dealership Mark Weatherhead Ltd to cover Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire and North Hertfordshire. Mark Weatherhead Ltd will be responsible for Deutz-Fahr’s range of medium to large horsepower tractors, combines and telehandlers. With over 60 years in the agricultural industry

Mark Weatherhead Ltd brings a wealth of experience and integrity as well as a network of contacts throughout the Midlands, which will help Deutz-Fahr gain a foothold in a major arable heartland. ‘Mark Weatherhead Ltd’s strength in after sales will support the Deutz-Fahr brand for mutual benefit,” says SDF marketing manager Graham Barnwell. ‘In this particular trading area

around cambridge our organisation has gone from low specific dealer coverage - which has been historically unstable - to having a solid foundation to build on. ‘Deutz-Fahr’s extensive tractor range has helped us increase market share annually in the UK so the timing of this appointment is perfect and fits with our plan to fill gaps in a strong dealer portfolio nationally’, he says.

Prototype bio-methane tractor

methane powered tractor set to make energy independent farming

............................................................................................................................................................................................... UK Cheddar producer Wyke Farms tests T6.180 Methane Power prototype Positive feedback on prototype’s power and versatility on-farm Potential cost savings and reduced carbon footprint considered major benefits New Holland’s second generation T6.180 Methane Power tractor has received very positive feedback from testing by Wyke Farms – one of the UK’s biggest Cheddar cheese producers – to see how it stood up to practical farm conditions. The methane-powered tractor was developed by New Holland as a 100% sustainable solution to increasing fuel costs. In the UK, where on-farm biogas plants are becoming more common, there could be an ample fuel supply on hand. The tractor draws on commercial vehicle technology already used by New Holland’s sister brand, Iveco. By adapting existing engine technology, fitting a small three-way catalytic converter housed within a standard tractor chassis and cab, the company has ensured the methane tractor looks and drives just like a diesel-powered tractor while exceeding the current Tier 4B emissions legislation. At Wyke Farms in Somerset, the prototype tractor was put through its paces with a slurry tanker, transporting material to and from the farm’s anaerobic digester (AD) plant. Three large anaerobic digesters process waste from

the farm’s 1,000 dairy cows, local cider waste and other suitable material. The resulting methane is used to power the farm’s boilers and generate electricity for the farm and the cheese factory. Excess gas is sold back to the grid to serve the local community. Roger Clothier, Wyke Farms’ Director who tested the prototype tractor said: “We need fuel efficient vehicles with a good power to weight ratio to pull heavy tanks around the farm. My first impression is that this looks and feels just like a normal tractor. “With a combined gross weight of 27 tonnes, the tractor and fully loaded tanker was a little slow to get off the line, but once moving the tractor came alive. Engine braking downhill was good and there was plenty of power in the mid-range and top-end with no torque issues when going uphill it drove just like a diesel.” The farm’s preferred power bracket for its tractor fleet is around 170hp. They perform a range of tasks; mainly tanker and trailer transport as well as the usual range of farm applications including ground preparation. The T6.180 Methane Power prototype offers 179hp max power which would cope with any of the duties required at Wyke Farms but Roger felt that an additional 20hp would be preferable, particularly when under heavy load. The use of compressed natural gas (CNG) in vans, trucks and

buses is well developed and limited only by storage capacity on the vehicle. New Holland has managed to squeeze 300L (52kg) of compressed methane into nine tanks around the tractor; enough for around six hours of work depending on activity and load. Wyke Farms achieved around four and a half to five hours for tanker transport work during testing. Roger commented that while a comparable diesel tractor would work for longer on one tank of fuel, refilling the methane tractor wasn’t too much of an issue. The farm used an onsite CNG trailer from Gas Vehicle Alliance during the test period. Filling nine methane cylinders was quick and easy through a single inlet on the tractor. Increasing the running time requires more gas cylinder storage; something that is difficult to achieve with current cylinder shape and technology. However, New Holland is looking at potentially adding tanks to the front ballast and on towed implements. Wyke Farms uses around 12,000L of red diesel a month at a cost of £4,000. Running costs for the T6.180 Methane Power tractor were difficult to judge on this particular test however New Holland estimates that fuel cost savings of 25 to 40% could be achieved. In addition, no Ad Blue is required.

Special celebration

Helmut Claas celebrates 90th birthday

............................................................................................................................................................................................... Helmut Claas, for many years the managing partner of the CLAAS Group and chair of the Shareholders’ Committee, will celebrate his 90th birthday on 16 July. He built the company, founded by his father and uncles, into one of the world’s leading agricultural machinery enterprises. “Helmut Claas has been a decisive source of both ideas and action for decades. With great expertise and persistence, he led the CLAAS family firm through good times and bad, repeatedly providing important stimuli for technological progress in agricultural engineering”, says Lothar Kriszun, spokesperson for the CLAAS Group Executive Board. Helmut Claas was born in 1926 in Harsewinkel, Germany, the eldest of three children. Between 1948 and 1954 he completed a degree in mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Hanover. This included a semester at the Technical University of Vienna and a year of agricultural studies in Paris. This was followed by further studies in the field at the University of Vienna and the Grande École Nationale d’Agriculture in Paris. After finishing his studies he took responsibility for the planning and establishment of a CLAAS distributorship in France, now trading as CLAAS France. In 1958 Helmut Claas entered his parents’ family firm in Harsewinkel, Germany. In 1962 he was appointed director of the engineering department. When the company was re-established

12 | August 2016 | AgriNews

as a general partnership under German law (OHG) in 1978, he became a personally liable partner. In 1996, as part of the restructuring of the firm into a joint-stock company, he moved from the role of managing partner to be chair of both the Supervisory Board and the Shareholders’ Committee. His special focus has always been on developing pioneering products and mass producing them economically. A whole series of innovations were initiated or co-created by Helmut Claas. For example, in 1970 the DOMINATOR series was developed, based on a modular or platform construction concept. The DOMINATOR became one of the most successful combine harvester models in the world. Its successor model, the LEXION, was also developed in Helmut Claas’s era. This is still considered the most advanced and capable combine harvester worldwide. The development of the JAGUAR self-propelled forage harvester, was also a success story, one that enabled CLAAS to dominate global markets. In 2003 he succeeded in taking an important step towards developing and securing the company’s future success through the takeover by CLAAS of the whole tractor division of Renault Agriculture. Since then the company has been in a position to supply the global agriculture sector with the complete range of important farming machines. Many internationally prestigious universities in Hungary, the United Kingdom,

Bulgaria and Germany have awarded honorary doctorates to Helmut Claas. For example, in 2000 he received the honorary title “Doctor of Agricultural Studies” in “recognition of his outstanding achievements in the field of agricultural engineering and his particular services in the development of high-performance, modern agricultural machines” from the University of StuttgartHohenheim. It was also the University of StuttgartHohenheim that, in 2004, appointed him to its honorary senate for his lifetime achievement in the field of pioneering agricultural technology. In June 2009, the then Goryachkin University of Moscow, now the Timiryazev Agricultural Academy, appointed him an honorary professor. Also in 2009, the Republic of France appointed Helmut Claas “Chevalier dans l’Ordre de la Legion d’honneur”, honouring his services as a pioneer of Franco-German cooperation.Personal awards, such as honorary citizenship of his home town of Harsewinkel, Germany, the Medal for Merit of the German state of BadenWürttemberg, as well as the Order of Merit of the French Agriculture Minister, round off his life’s work. The long-term further development of the CLAAS family firm has rested on firm foundations for many years. Today his daughter Cathrina Claas-Mühlhäuser leads the corporate group as chair of the Supervisory Board.

AgriScot

It’s time to nominate your customers

............................................................................................................................................................................................... Scottish agriculture’s ancillary trades, advisors and all those connected with the livestock industry have a fantastic opportunity to highlight excellence within the beef and sheep sectors. That was the message from the Directors of AgriScot as part of their drive to encourage nominations for the Scottish Sheep Farm of the Year and Scotch Beef Farm of the Year awards. AgriScot Chairman, Andrew Moir, stated: “Our Farm of the Year awards are a celebration of all that is good within the industry.” “If you are involved in the ancillary trades, and have farming customers that are at the top of their game, we would encourage you to put their names

forward for our awards.” “The incentive for suppliers and advisors, of course, is the kudos of being associated with a Farm of the Year finalist or winner!” The Scottish Sheep Farm of the Year award, sponsored by Thorntons Solicitors, opened for entries and nominations earlier in the summer. 2015 was the inaugural year of the award, in which Joyce Campbell’s Armadale Farm, Sutherland beat off stiff competition from farms in Ayrshire, Selkirkshire and Roxburghshire to be awarded the winner’s certificate at AgriScot in November. The 2016 Scotch Beef Farm of the year competition, supported by QMS, was launched recently at an open day, held on last year’s winning farm, Darnford, Banchory by the Watson family.

Anyone who would like further information about how to enter, or nominate, for either of the 2016 awards is encouraged to email enquiries@agriscot.co.uk in the first instance. “I would say to those in the trades, please put your customers forward!” “At this stage all we need is their name and address and we will write to inform them that they have been nominated and encourage them to complete an entry form.” Alongside the sheep and beef farm competitions, the Scottish Dairy Farm of the Year award is also part of the AgriScot stable. All milk recorded dairy farms in Scotland are automatically eligible for the award, with initial judging based on official milk recording data.

Animax Veterinary Technology

Animax launches first sheep bolus with highest trace elements levels

............................................................................................................................................................................................... Three of the most important trace elements for sheep can now be delivered in a single bolus thanks to a new product developed by leading UK bolus technology company, Animax Ltd. Tracesure 3-in-1 Sheep & Lamb is the latest addition to Animax’s range of boluses. The company’s veterinary director, Dr Elizabeth Berry, says the product is not only suitable for maintaining normal health, vitality and fertility of adult sheep and rams but can be used on replacement ewe lambs or ram lambs. “Cobalt, selenium and iodine can be given in this combined bolus which has 185mg of cobalt, 100mg of selenium and 660mg of iodine, higher levels than any other bolus on the market!’’ Dr Berry explains. The need for supplementation because of lack of these elements in the diet can be common and necessary with variables including soil type, level of rainfall, grass varieties, forage type and grassland management. Dr Berry says pregnant and growing sheep have a higher need for these trace elements. “They may not obtain enough from their normal diet,’’ she warns. “Tracesure 3-in-1 Sheep & Lamb contains optimum amounts to cover demands during growth, pregnancy and lactation and will provide these for a period of approximately six months.’’

18 | August 2016 | AgriNews

At Troedyrharn, Brecon, fat lamb producer Rob Stephens says the benefits of the bolus is visual and important for flock condition – it is that daily release; he can see the advantages by looking at his flock. He fattens 1500 store lambs annually. “We buy lean lambs but we don’t quite know their history so we bolus them, it does a phenomenal job.’’ He boluses ewes at tupping and at scanning, with the benefit of the application at scanning passing to lambs in the womb and later, through their mother’s milk. There is also the added advantage that 4g of copper oxide is contained in Tracesure Sheep Traffic Lights, a separate capsule for supplementation in cases of low copper in the diet. The newly-launched Tracesure 3-in-1 Sheep & Lamb is generating strong sales. Dr Berry says in addition to optimum trace element supplementation, labour efficiency is a key attraction. “One bolus, utilising Animax’s unique leaching bolus technology, does the job.’’

Accurate min-till drilling

Folding ESPRO offers fast, efficient and accurate min-till drilling

............................................................................................................................................................................................... KUHN Farm Machinery has expanded its range of minimum tillage seed drills with the introduction of a 4-metre, folding version of its awardwinning ESPRO machine. Officially launched in the UK at Cereals in 2015, the 6-metre ESPRO 6000 R received the ‘2015 Machine of the Year’ award at the SIMA 2015 exhibition. A new 4-metre foldable version – the ESPRO 4000 R – has now been launched and is available in the UK and throughout Europe. In common with its larger sibling, the 4000 R uses two rows of cultivating discs followed by a single row of large diameter (900mm) wheels

22 | August 2016 | AgriNews

which are offset and fitted with specially designed deep tread tyres which create an ideal seed bed. The 4000 R also uses Kuhn’s Crossflex coulter bar: each coulter is mounted on polyurethane blocks which allow the individual coulters to follow terrain contours. This ensures a consistent seeding depth across the machine’s full working width and, in turn, results in homogenous seedling emergence. The ESPRO 4000 R requires very little power to be operated and can be used with tractors with as little as 140hp. Despite its low power requirement, the new machine boasts high drilling speeds and is

compatible with a wide variety of seed types and sizes. Adjusting the ESPRO’s settings such as seeding rate, drilling depth and tamping pressure is simple and easy to do via a user-friendly VT50 or CCI200 ISOBUS control terminal. The same terminal also operates the machine’s automated headland turn function. The ESPRO 4000 R can also be fitted with optional front press wheels – with in-cab pressure adjustment – to prelevel the soil in front of the working discs and to prevent the machine from sinking into lighter or wet soils.

NSTS explains..

the importance of sprayer testing

............................................................................................................................................................................................... Everyone will agree that accurate application of pesticides is not only desirable but essential whether for the environmental, the consumer or the grower point of view. Accurate and targeted use of pesticides is all part of modern agriculture. That’s why back in the mid 90’s Agricultural Engineers Association (AEA) devised a test for application machinery to make sure it was working as intended and with a qualified operator would apply pesticides accurately and on target. In the early years of 2000 this test became the National Sprayer Testing Scheme as one of the main pillars of the Voluntary Initiative and is in 2016 testing some 16,500 pieces of application equipment annually. Now NSTS is an accepted part of arable agriculture and requirement of the major crop assurance schemes and supermarket protocols, requiring that farmers and growers have their sprayers inspected annually. Testing pesticide application equipment is about to become even more important as the Sustainable Use Directive requires that all pesticide application equipment is tested by 26th November 2016. All pesticide application equipment applies not only to sprayers but also includes slug pellet and granular applicators.

The NSTS is available through a network of test centres who have qualified examiners available to inspect and confirm the equipment is of the standard required. The test is usually carried out at the owner’s premises at a mutually agreed convenient time. The examiner will charge for the inspection, NSTS have no input into the cost of individual tests; the cost being commercial at the point of use. Additionally machine owners are free to choose their nearest or preferred test centre a list of test centres can be found on the NSTS website www.nsts.org.uk As confirmation of the result of the test the examiner will apply a pass sticker to the machine and give the owner a copy of the test report form. Other copies of the form are returned to NSTS Administration where the information is retained on a database of all tested machines. This information is available to crop assurance Certification Bodies for verification. Having an NSTS test ensures that the machine is working correctly and capable of delivering the correct dose on target. It also helps to reduce costly downtime and ensures reliability of an important piece of equipment used by farmers and growers.

Bauer - Bigger capacity

Bigger capacity reel joins the Bauer Rainstar

............................................................................................................................................................................................... Growers wanting greater area coverage from a single reel irrigator have a new option in the Bauer Rainstar E55 XL – the new flagship model in the renowned Rainstar range. Available with 125mm or 140mm diameter high-quality PE pipe manufactured in the Bauer factory in Austria, the E55 XL can cover up to 7.7ha per run and twice that area by performing two runs from a central position by rotating the turntable reel. The newcomer is equipped with a robust galvanised steel chassis and integral hydraulic ground anchor to keep the drum stable in spite of the driving torque needed to reelin the hose. High pulling force – up to 40% greater than with some irrigation reels – is generated by Bauer’s top-of-the-range and highly-efficient TVR 60 radial water turbine, working in conjunction with a four-speed

32 | August 2016 | AgriNews

gearbox, a 1½ in drive chain and large diameter laser cut sprocket. The turbine’s design and precision assembly ensures it operates with very little water pressure loss, while the unique Vario variable output nozzle exploits what pressure is available by delivering full stream flow over the turbine’s impeller at all settings. In combination with the computer control system installed, the variable water nozzle maintains a constant hose retraction speed from the beginning to the end of the strip. For highest volumes, the Rainstar E55 XL is available with 140mm Bauer PE pipe in 500m, 530m and 560m lengths, delivering up to 110cu m/hr and capable of irrigating more than 6ha per draw at a swath width of 110m. The 125mm hose is available

in 680m, 710m and 740m lengths, delivering up to 70cu m/hr across irrigation swaths up to 100m wide. The new irrigator is controlled as standard by the Bauer Ecostar 4300 controller but the new Ecostar 6000 controller is an option, providing more advanced features including a 4.3in LED touch-screen for entering and adjusting settings. The Ecostar 6000 can store up to 12 different irrigation programmes that define retraction speed, preirrigation, post-irrigation and speed zones, and collects operational data transferable to farm records. The Rainstar E55 XL can also be managed through Bauer’s SmartRain mobile device App, which provides remote monitoring, alerts and control functions.

Friends rally round..

young farmer diagnosed with Leukaemia at 23

............................................................................................................................................................................................... By Chris McCullough A hard working young farmer from Saintfield has just gone through his first session of chemotherapy following a shock cancer diagnosis by Belfast doctors. Andrew Gill from Saintfield is only 23 years old and was working day and night and enjoying life until severe bouts of tiredness caught up with him. A plasterer by trade, Andrew was also working on the home farm as well as milking cows for local dairy farmers in the evenings after work. He is also a champion young ploughman having competed in many competitions around the UK and Ireland. Now his friends and family are rallying around to help support Andrew and have organised a charity tractor road run to raise money for Friends of the Cancer Centre. The diagnosis came as a real shock to Andrew and his family. When he first went to the doctors complaining of being very tired Andrew expected to be sent home with a box of pills. However, little did he know that trip to the doc would change his life and see him embark on four six-week sessions of chemotherapy. Andrew is currently recovering from the first session at home but is due back into hospital in two weeks time for the next course of treatment. Andrew said: “I’ve always been a hard working man getting up at 6am most mornings to help out on the home farm before going to work as a plasterer. “In the evenings I was relief milking for a number of dairy farmers but I was becoming very tired very quickly but just thought I was suffering from overdoing it. “The local doctor referred me to the City Hospital in Belfast for tests and it was there they discovered I had no white blood cells. “I was expecting to be sent home with a box of pills so it came as quite a shock to be diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia, which is a cancer of the blood. “I have already gone through my first chemotherapy session in hospital over the past six weeks and am now home for two weeks. “After this I will go back into hospital for three more chemo sessions each being six weeks long,” he said. As a result of the treatment Andrew lost his hair and had problems “keeping hospital food down.” And that’s when his mum stepped in to bring him some home cooked food. “I couldn’t keep anything down in hospital,” Andrew said. “Mum started bringing me in her home cooked lunches and then dinners. “My diagnosis has been quite a shock for my parents too but I was very grateful she brought me in some home comforts.” Andrew’s girlfriend Ashleigh Coyle, his friends and fellow members of his local Moneyrea Young Farmers

Club are all rallying around him to ensure he has all the support he needs. The Friends of the Cancer Centre charity has also been a huge support to Andrew. “I have had great support from my family and Moneyrea YFC and also from the Friends of the Cancer Centre. “The young farmers have been bringing me in Playstation games and the Friends of the Cancer Centre even brought me a big flat screen TV. They come for a chat and take your mind off it all. “Because it’s very rare for someone as young as me to have this cancer, I shared a hospital ward with two much older men.” Moneyrea YFC is organising a tractor road run on August 11 to help raise funds for the Friends of the Cancer Centre. “I hope to attend the road run. It looks like I will be at the start of the second session of chemotherapy but I told my consultant about the fundraiser and she was delighted. They are hopefully letting me out for a night for a few hours to attend.” The charity road run takes place on Thursday, August 11 starting off at 7pm from Hillmount Garden Centre, Upper Braniel Road, Belfast.

Botulism outbreaks

Broiler litter responsivle for botulism outbreaks in Northern Ireland

............................................................................................................................................................................................... By Chris McCullough TESTS in Northern Ireland have confirmed that broiler litter continues to contribute to outbreaks of botulism in cattle. The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) have confirmed that cases of botulism continue to occur in Northern Ireland following results of tests carried out by the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI). Northern Ireland has a large poultry industry and limited area of arable land to spread the manure on hence why it is spread on grassland. Between January and September 2015, 60 cases of botulism in cattle in Northern Ireland were confirmed out of 121 suspects, an increase on the 46 positive cases in 2014 and 38 in 2013. Back in 2009 there were 77 suspected cases of botulism of which 15 were confirmed. The number of cases had risen to 142 suspected cases in 2014 with 46 confirmations. Investigations by the Veterinary Sciences Division of AFBI have provided strong circumstantial evidence that broiler litter is a risk factor for many of these outbreaks. Botulism is a severe, often fatal, form of blood poisoning which can affect most animals. It is caused by toxins produced by bacteria which are present in high levels in decaying organic matter such as bird and animal carcasses. It is caused by Clostridium

36 | August 2016 | AgriNews

botulinum bacteria that produce toxins under certain environmental conditions. The bacteria are commonly found in the environment and will grow to high levels in decaying organic matter including animal and bird carcases. It is believed that contamination of broiler litter with the carcases of chickens that have died, from various causes during production, can render the litter dangerous for ruminants. Even small fragments of carcases transferred onto pasture by scavenger animals, such as foxes, dogs or crows may pose a risk to grazing ruminants. Scavengers may gain access to this material during storage or following spreading on land. While the Animal By-Products (Enforcement) Regulations (NI) 2015 permits the spreading on land of poultry litter, the spreading of litter contaminated by carcases is an offence under the regulations. Botulism hits cattle and sheep of all ages characterised by progressive muscle weakness (paralysis). Affected animals may be weak, stagger about or go down. Cattle characteristically display flaccid paralysis and occasionally protrusion of the tongue. In most cases the disease is fatal although some animals may recover. In many cases of botulism euthanasia is justified on welfare grounds. Cattle are extremely sensitive to the effects of the toxin

meaning that ingestion of very small amounts of toxin can result in clinical disease. The progression and severity of the disease depends on the amount of ingested toxin. When a large amount of toxin has been ingested, the animal may be found dead without having shown any signs of disease. Conversely, if only a small amount of toxin is ingested the progression of the disease may take a more chronic course and clinical signs may be less severe. Poultry litter should not be spread on agricultural land that is to be grazed, or from which silage or hay is to be harvested, in the same year. This is because fragments of carcases, containing botulinum toxins, may persist on pasture for a considerable time. If litter must be spread, it should be deep-ploughed into arable ground. If this is not an option and litter must be disposed of by spreading on pasture, ruminants should not have access to the treated fields for at least several months. Two vaccines are available under a ‘special treatment certification’ for the protection of cattle at risk of botulism. Veterinary surgeons may apply for to the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) however, vaccination should not be used as a substitute for preventing exposure of cattle to poultry litter that may contain carcass material.

Steve Birchall tells all

Owner of Steve Birchall Poultry House Cleaning Services Ltd

...............................................................................................................................................................................................

No poultry producer can afford to hinder flock performance by allowing a build up of micro organisms. Even low disease levels drag profits back and skimping on the cleaning routine between flocks is false economy, says Lancashire based cleaning specialist Steve Birchall. “There is no opportunity these days to rest buildings between flocks. Turnaround times are tight and it is, therefore, vital that buildings are not only thoroughly cleaned but disinfected as well, and if there has been a health problem the cleaning and disinfection treatment should take account of it” says Steve, who has been operating a nationwide contract poultry shed cleaning business for over 35 years. His two teams are equipped to carry out whatever cleaning regime producers require and he suggests a good standard retune for anyone who wants the best safeguard. After the litter has been removed, the building and any equipment either trained inside or taken out should be power washed at about 3400 psi with a combined cleaner/sanitizer/ deodorizer, which should remove some 80% of micro organisms at this stage. “Older buildings are often more difficult to clean than more modern ones,” Steve says, “however, if you are going to do the job at all then it is worth doing properly and you have to take sufficient time, particularly in

breeder or laying units where nest boxes and equipment have been in place for 12 months or more. Broiler units with a six or seven day turnaround are less difficult. However, people who prefer to do what is a rather unpleasant job themselves often get rather jaded before it has been done properly. If there are any other enterprises on the farm, they have to keep breaking off to do other work. Poultry buildings, whether they are broiler, breeder, layer or turkey units, not only need to look clean, they must be disease free. The standard routine might, in the event of a flock health problem be extended to include powerful vircuide. All the products used should be biodegradable and safe should there be a run-off into a watercourse. Anyone cleaning poultry units should also have regard for human health as

well as that of the birds. When disinfecting and fogging you should wear proper respirators and protective clothing and whether you own a site or are a contractor like myself, you should provide employees with the proper essential equipment. Increasing pressure is being put on poultry producers to improve hygiene standards but many simply do not have time to master techniques. That’s why Steve Birchall Poultry Services aims to provide a top quality cleaning service at reasonable prices. Established in 1985, Steve Birchall Poultry Services provide the ideal cleaning solution. All work is carried out by experienced poultry house operatives familiar with all types of buildings. Whether a farmer specialises in broilers, breeders for free range, the Company has the expertise to complete the job to a farmer’s satisfaction. Steve says “Our work is carried out throughout the country.” His sales technique is simply making sure farmers know they are getting a quality service. “References are available if required and we

are happy to talk them through a procedure so they know exactly what is needed and what they are paying for.” Many farmer find it helpful to discuss their requirements. When they ring Steve Birchall Poultry House Cleaning Services they learn that the Company uses and supplies three types of foam, Bio Gel, DM and CID-S. The Company also sell disinfection and cleaners to the poultry industry. A large selection is always in stock and includes top brand names like Farm Fluid, Virocid, CID 2000, Kick Start, Vircon S, Bio Gel - and Steve is keen to point out that the Company can source whatever cleaners a farmer is looking for if they are not currently in stock. Steve Birchall Poultry House Cleaning Services covers the country, so a team of professional poultry house cleaning operatives are close at hand for all requirements. “If you are finding cleaning a strain, contact us for a price or just a chat to discuss your needs,” closes Steve.

Polaris at the game fair

Something Polaris for everyone at the Game Fair

............................................................................................................................................................................................... The Game Fair is always a great opportunity for Polaris to display several models from the wide range of the world’s best-selling ATVs and UTVs, with Ragley Hall in 2016 being no exception. The line-up of Polaris Rangers and Sportsman quads demonstrates the choice and versatility available for anyone needing a fully capable off-road 4x4 for work and recreation. The revolutionary features of the Polaris Rangers set the standard for side by side utility vehicles, providing the off-road capabilities of the most seasoned ATVs. Take the robust and powerful Ranger Diesel and you now have Polaris Active Descent Control and automatic braking on all wheels for smooth, controlled hill descents, as well as Electronic Power Steering for a lighter, smoother drive. The Ranger Diesel Crew is ever-popular with gamekeepers and shooting grounds, offering a wholly capable go-anywhere six-seater 4x4. The Ranger 570 maintains the standard with nimble

handling and the smooth, reliable power of the Polaris engine with its Electronic Fuel Injection and Engine Management System. Polaris has also been enhancing the Rangers with a wide range of new customising products and accessories from the Lock & Ride Pro-Fit cabs and cargo boxes to Chainsaw Mounts and Gun Mount Boots. Polaris describe the GENERAL as ‘the most versatile side-byside ever built’. Starting with a 100 horsepower ProStar® 1000 engine delivering the most power and torque in its class, you can accelerate from 0-40 mph in 3.6 seconds! Similar to its RZR cousin, the Ranger High Lifter Edition features reduced gearing for more mud-specific torque and to ensure the ProStar powerplant breathes, the unit has high engine air and clutch intakes and outlets which are essential for reliable performance. Polaris has also been enhancing the Rangers with a wide range of new customising products and accessories from the Lock & Ride

Pro-Fit cabs and cargo boxes to Chainsaw Mounts and Gun Mount Boots. The Polaris Sportsman is the best-selling ATV of all time and with the new Sportsman 450 H.O. there’s a great opportunity to own a full-size capability quad at an entry-level 400cc class price. The similarity stops there with the 450 being a serious contender for any shoot or farm with its automatic 4x4 system, IRS and PVT Automatic Transmission. It also offers masses of storage space with Lock & Ride front and rear racks. The Sportsman 570 shares this great capacity for storage while offering smooth, reliable power, Electronic Fuel Injection and Polaris Engine Management System. The Sportsman UTE was specifically designed for working in trickier, hilly terrain with its key feature of Polaris Four Wheel Descent Control for optimum traction and control in all conditions. All in all, quite a line-up for Polaris at The Game Fair, Ragley Hall, 29th – 31st July 2016, stand number K5134.
