Carpenters construct, erect, install, and repair structures and fixtures made from wood and other materials. Carpenters are involved in many different kinds of construction, from the building of highways and bridges to the installation of kitchen cabinets and windows. Each carpentry task is somewhat different, but most involve the same basic steps. Working from blueprints or instructions from supervisors, carpenters first do the layoutâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;measuring, marking, and arranging materialsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; in accordance with local building codes. They cut and shape wood, plastic, fiberglass, or drywall using hand and power tools, such as chisels, planes, saws, drills, and sanders. They then join the materials with nails, screws, staples, or adhesives. In the last step, carpenters do a final check of the accuracy of their work with levels, rules, plumb bobs, framing squares, and surveying equipment, and make any necessary adjustments. Some materials come prefabricated, allowing for easier and faster installation. Carpenters may do many different carpentry tasks, or they may specialize in one or two. Carpenters who remodel homes and other structures, for example, need a broad range of carpentry skills. As part of a single job, they might frame walls and partitions, put in doors and windows, build stairs, install cabinets and molding, and complete many other tasks. Welltrained carpenters are able to switch from residential building to commercial construction or remodeling work, depending on which offers the best work opportunities.

New from Claas - ATOS 200/300 Wide product range for a wide market segment

CLAAS has introduced a completely new tractor model series for the power segment up to 140 hp. The new ATOS, which is available in both 3-cylinder and 4-cylinder variants, includes a total of 6 models that range in power from 76 to 109 hp, and fits in between the ARION 400, AXOS, ELIOS and NEXOS model series. With the new ATOS, CLAAS has revised and expanded its product range in the power sector below 140 hp. With a total of 10 different models and 51 variants ranging from 72 to 530 hp, CLAAS is now able to offer its sales partners and customers the largest range of tractors it has ever offered in its history. The ATOS is characteristic on account of its simple and robust technology for day-to-day operations and, thanks to numerous equipment and expansion options, this makes it a versatile tractor for any type of use and customer. The tractor was introduced to the public for the first time at the 2014 Eima agricultural machinery trade fair held in Italy. “A True Claas” The new ATOS follows the modern, yet functional, CLAAS design and so fits seamlessly into the large CLAAS tractor family. With its compact dimensions, the ATOS is extremely manoeuvrable and ideal for all kinds of farm work. Large range of power options with four and threecylinder engines The ATOS is powered by a Stage IIIb/Tier 4i-compliant engine. The 300 series uses a 4 cylinder engine that has a 3.8 l displacement, whilst the 200 Series has a 3 cylinder engine, with a 2.9 l displacement. The engines feature a common rail injection system, turbocharger and charge air cooler. Exhaust after treatment is carried out by a diesel oxidation catalytic converter (DOC). Cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system ensures maximum efficiency. The catalytic converter is integrated under the bonnet leaving clear all-round visibility. High torque values of up to 436 Nm mean that the ATOS is extremely responsive to drive. The fuel tank holds up to 145 l and the standard equipment also includes an engine speed memory function. Wide range of transmission options With three different variants, CLAAS offers a transmission to suit every customer. The range includes a standard manual transmission for basic applications, the TWINSHIFT transmission with two powershift speeds or the TRISHIFT transmission with three powershift speeds. All transmission variants are available with either a mechanical reverser or the REVERSHIFT clutchless variant. Three power take-off options are also available for the ATOS with the following speeds:

540 and 540 ECO 540/540 ECO, 1000 and 1000 ECO. An automatic power take-off system and a separate groundspeed power take-off for powering trailers are also available optionally. New: SMART STOP A special feature of the ATOS is the new SMART STOP function for the transmission when equipped with REVERSHIFT. When activated, using a button on the dashboard, the system automatically de-clutches when the brake pedal is depressed. Stopping and starting is carried out solely using the brake pedal. This makes SMART STOP ideal for repetitive actions around the yard, especially when using a front loader, and equally in the field, for instance when round baling. The SMART STOP function shuts off automatically at higher speeds. The ATOS can be equipped ex-factory with a fully integrated 1.9t capacity front linkage. The front linkage console can be operated either with the mechanical PROPILOT control system or the hydraulic FLEXPILOT control system. The rear linkage can also be controlled mechanically or electronically as an option. The ATOS 300 has a maximum lift capacity of 4.8 t at the rear, while the ATOS 200 can lift up to 3.6 t. The standard hydraulic pump has an output of 55 l/ min. The ECO option provides an increased hydraulic output of 60 l/min at a reduced engine speed of 1600 rpm – thus lowering fuel consumption. A total of four spool valves are available. The ATOS is available in both two- and four-wheel drive variants across all models. The maximum tyre size for the ATOS 300 is 38”, and for the ATOS 200 the maximum size is 34”. The new ATOS is equipped with a comfortable fourpillar cab, which provides excellent all-round visibility of the working area. Furthermore, all of the functions are clearly arranged within the cab. The doors open over a wide range, making it easy to enter and exit the cab. Thanks to the glass roof hatch, the driver always has a good view over the front loader and ensuring they can work safely and accurately at all times.

New Holland News Customer satisfaction inspires New Holland Dealer Aftersales Convention

Kuhn Farm Machinery has updated its entry-level range of disc mowers with the arrival of four new versions of its basic GMD model. Available in working widths from 1.6 to 2.8 metres, the four model range uses Kuhn’s 100 Series cutter bar and Protectadrive system to deliver high quality and reliable grass cutting. The GMD range is designed for small or mediumsized farms where a simple and reliable machine is required. The GMD 16, 20, 24 and 28 machines feature working widths of 1.60m, 2.00m, 2.40m and 2.80m respectively and are now fitted with Kuhn’s 100 Series cutter bar which features the company’s Protectadrive safety system. “The Series 100 cutter bar is a standard feature on Kuhn’s higher specification mowers, and is now available on the GMD range,” explains Duncan McLeish, UK Sales Manager for Kuhn Farm Machinery. “It gives an exceptionally clean cut which not only preserves the nutritional value of the cut grass, but also promotes faster sward re-growth.” The Series 100 cutter bar is equipped with large diameter gearwheels with reinforced teeth for improved wear and impact resistance and uses disc pinion shaft bearings which are symmetrical in relation to the radial forces endured by the disc. These bearings are fitted in an anti-distortion housing to enable them to withstand the heaviest loads and to optimize the load balance incurred by each disc. “The cutter bar is specifically designed to have a long service life and to be easily serviced,” Mr McLeish adds. “It is protected by Kuhn’s anti-impact Protectadrive system which protects the gear train should an obstacle be struck. Each disc shaft features a shear groove which is designed to fail should the mowing bar come into contact with a foreign object. By making the sheared shaft easy to replace, any downtime is kept to a minimum, and in fact, the mower should be operational again in less than 15 minutes.” For increased machine protection, the new GMD range also uses a swath wheel to prevent the cutter bar from coming into contact with the ground, while a safety break-back system allows the mower to shift rearwards should an obstacle be struck.

Featured tractors to appear for the first time on the John Deere stand at LAMMA 2015

John Deere’s new 6R and 6M Series tractors, R4040i self-propelled sprayer and 8000 Series self-propelled forage harvester will be featured for the first time on the John Deere stand at LAMMA 2015. The tractors will be making their UK farming show debut, following their European launch this autumn. In addition, the specially decorated John Deere S685i combine harvester that had a starring role in the 2014 Lord Mayor’s Show in London this November, in support of the NFU’s Back British Farming campaign, will be featured at the entrance to the event. These latest John Deere machines have been designed to improve machine performance, uptime and operating costs for both arable and livestock farmers, as well as contractors. Spearheading the 6R Series mid-size tractors from Mannheim, the six-cylinder 6215R large frame model features enhanced manoeuvrability, improved operator comfort and an industry leading extended service interval of 750 hours. The tractor is powered by a new 6.8-litre Stage IV compliant engine rated at 215hp (97/68 EC), with an extra 40hp boost for transport and pto work from the intelligent power management (IPM) system. Fuel efficiency of this new model can be enhanced by choosing either the established AutoPowr continuously variable transmission or the new, advanced double-clutch DirectDrive transmission. The new CommandARM – as featured on John Deere’s latest 7R and 8R Series tractors – features an electronic joystick and a Generation 4 CommandCenter display. In addition, this FarmSightready 6R Series tractor can be fitted with JDLink

telematics as an option, to include remote display access (RDA) and wireless data transfer (WDT). The small frame 6105M is a new lower horsepower addition to the 6M Series standard tractor range from 115 to 170hp. This model has been designed as an entry level livestock tractor, with extra premium features compared to the 5M Series. It features a a full-frame design, Stage IIIB 4.5-litre four-cylinder PowerTech diesel-only engine, proven PowrQuad and AutoQuad Plus 40kph transmissions plus optional Triple Link Suspension (TLS) and iTEC Basic headland management system. The 6105R can also be optionally fitted with GreenStar and ISOBUS ready wiring to further improve productivity, and comes as standard with CESAR Datatag and integrated immobiliser systems. The 4000-litre R4040i self-propelled sprayer is also powered by a new 6.8-litre Stage IV compliant PowerTech engine, producing 235 rated hp boosted to 255hp with IPM. The sprayer comes AutoTrac ready and with a free JDLink Ultimate subscription for one year, which enables a range of additional FarmSight precision farming solutions including RDA and WDT, as well as Service Advisor Remote. The sprayer’s new variable geometry BoomTrac Pro option increases application accuracy and efficiency by automatically adjusting the height of the individual boom wings independently to match the terrain. The top of the range 8600i wide body selfpropelled forage harvester features a Stage IV compliant 625hp 13.5-litre John Deere engine, the unique, award-winning HarvestLab constituent sensing system and new KernelStar2 multi-crop processor.

Bauer on farm bedding production Using undigested forage fibres as a bedding material for cow cubicles on British farms

With more than 50 Green Bedding systems and a BRU 1000 installed on farms in Great Britain, Bauer has more experience of on-farm cubicle bedding production than any supplier of slurry management equipment. “We’ve installed Green Bedding separators on farms with just 120 cows and almost 1700 cows, with a herd size of 200-400 cows being the most common,” says Adrian Tindall, Bauer UK and Ireland sales manager. “Users are delighted with the technique; they report increased cow lying times, which can translate into increased milk yield, and fewer ailments such as hock abrasions. They also like the way cows bedded on this material come into the parlour cleaner. Other big attractions are the cost savings and the lack of hassle over sourcing and delivery compared with the use of bought-in bedding materials such as sand and sawdust. “But the main focus is on cow comfort and well-being,” says Mr Tindall. “Instead of rationing bedding material to keep costs down and to ensure supplies hold-out until the next delivery, dairymen can be generous with their daily supply of home-produced bedding to provide cows with comfortable cubicle beds.” Nor have they seen any cause for concern regarding pathogens and mastitis: “Producers have experienced either stable or reductions in cell counts, with some users also reporting a drop in mastitis cases after installing a Green Bedding or BRU system,” he says. Richard Threlfell, Cumbria Since switching from sawdust to Green Bedding, hock problems have become a thing of the past at Plumpton Head, Penrith where Richard Threlfell, his wife and parents run the Crossfield herd of pedigree Holstein cattle. “I was happy using sawdust until I came across this lovely soft bedding material and discovered I could

produce it on the farm,” says Richard. “We were spending £1500-£1800 a month through the winter when the cows are housed indoors; now, the bedding is effectively free because we’d separate anyway to make slurry management easier.” With a virtually limitless supply available, the cows enjoy four times as much bedding material as before and are happy to lie for longer periods. “I had 70 bulling heifers in when I first used it and expected to see at least 10 to 15 of them running around, wasting energy,” says Richard. “But when I looked in a bit later every animal was lying down; it just seems too good to be true sometimes!” Steve Bennett, Wiltshire Dried sawdust, recycled MDF powder and gypsum have been used to supplement rubber cubicle mats at Tockenham Court Farm near Wootton Bassett, where Steve Bennett runs a 300-cow dairy herd. But after replacing a basic slurry separator with a Green Bedding unit from Bauer to produce bedding material on-farm, improvements were seen almost immediately. “The cows cleaned up no end, definitely as clean as cows on sand, and the number of mastitis cases dropped dramatically,” he reports. “Swollen hocks on older cows, even ones in their eighth and ninth lactation, have gone down too.” While cell counts and bactoscan levels have remained constant, he says the cows’ teats are cleaner and therefore milking is a lot quicker. “What’s great about this system is the fact that the material is free, after the initial investment, and is in abundance,” Steve adds. “Then the biggest difference in cost comes from the improved health benefits and the reduced costs of drugs and treatments to cure ailments from poor bedding.”

A single Outlander Plug-In Vehicle could regenerate enough spare energy to power 150 homes

CIRENCESTER – Mitsubishi’s game changing 148 mpg Outlander plug-in uses a clever energy recovery system to harvest electricity that would otherwise be lost. Over 100 miles of mixed driving, up to 15kw/hrs of potentially wasted energy is harvested and put back into the vehicle’s lithiumion battery. This means that in a year, driving 10,000 miles, a single Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in could create enough spare electricity to keep on the lights and appliances in 150 UK homes for a day – OFGEM figures put average daily electricity use in UK homes at around 10kw/hrs. Recovery of kinetic energy – a function of weight and speed - is maximised using a unique paddle-shift system that selects from five precise levels of regenerative braking. Driver control of when and where kinetic energy is harvested significantly increases the mix of electrical power in the vehicle’s hybrid drive-train. Replenishing the battery in this way extends the petrol-free driving range and offsets the need for power that would otherwise be drawn from National Grid charging infrastructure. The Outlander plug-in is a full-sized family 4x4 SUV that combines electric and petrol power. Unlike most hybrid vehicles, the Outlander can travel significantly further on electrical power alone

- 32.5 miles in fact. The impressive electric range gives the vehicle phenomenal environmental credentials. It emits just 44g/km of CO2 and the official combined fuel consumption figure is 148mpg. The Outlander plug-in’s on-board computer accurately displays harvested energy and usage in real-time. The paddle shift levers are located on the steering column, enabling the driver to comfortably optimise the level of regenerative braking with changing road and driving conditions. Steep descents and motorway speeds allow for stronger regenerative braking using level five. Levels two, three and four provide a productive level of regeneration in and around urban areas. Level one provides a lighter but still beneficial level of energy recovery. The Outlander plug-in attracts zero vehicle excise duty and is exempt from London Congestion Charge.
