Farming Hub New Website New website is at the hub of UK farming
............................................................................................................................................................................................... Farming is an industry steeped in tradition but more farmers than ever are turning to the web to run their businesses. It is more important than ever to think about farming differently with produce prices falling and costs increasing, farmers need a site that thinks differently. Not just your standard listings but a dynamic approach to selling and buying. Farming Hub is the brain child of Pembrokeshire farmer Lawrence Couzens who in 2012 conceived an idea for a new format of farming website, simplifying the process of buying and selling. This led to the launch of Farming Hub, an online hub for farmers to buy and sell initially farm machinery. “I have worked in agriculture for over 21 years and have always found it difficult to find
the farm equipment I required. I just wanted to go to one site and find the machine or part I needed,’’ explained Lawrence, who worked on farms before returning home to the family farm in Pembrokeshire. Farming Hub was launched January 2013, we now have almost 10,000 twitter followers, a huge following on facebook, and the site has a comprehensive selection of traders with a good selection of equipment. Farminghub.co.uk has been such a success it is having an updated to offer more, the updated site will be available in November, we will be adding to the site to make it a true Hub for farmers. We are always delighted to receive feedback.

New Reco Flexi Toppa
New Holland T7.315 Tractor Wins Machine of the Year 2016 Title in the L category at Agritechnica Show New Holland reaps a prestigious award at Agritechnica 2015: the brand new T7.315 tractor was crowned with the coveted “Machine of the Year” 2016 in the L category , title bestowed by a jury of 19 journalists representing leading European agricultural publications. The machine was rewarded for its technical innovation and the benefits it brings to customers, with selection criteria focusing on innovative features, performance, productivity, cost of operation, ease of use and operator comfort. Carlo Lambro, New Holland Agriculture Brand President, stated: “This award represents an important recognition from the industry of New Holland’s approach to product development that focuses innovation on meeting our customers’ needs with technologies that enable them to run their farming businesses efficiently, profitably and sustainably. The T7.315 rewarded is testament to our development teams’ capacity to understand our customers’ demands and provide effective solutions. We are particularly proud of receiving this awards this year, when we are celebrating New Holland’s 120 years of innovation in agriculture.” “We are very proud of this recognition,” commented Sean Lennon, Head of Tractor and Telehandler Product Management. “We devoted a lot of effort to developing this product: a tractor meeting the specific requests made by our customers. We asked them what they wanted from their ‘ideal tractor’. They told us they would like a top-of-the-range T7 with more power that would also be capable of high load jobs usually done by heavier tractors and of taking multi-tasking to a new level. The T7.315 delivers on every point. This award is a well deserved recognition of the hard work and dedication of all those involved in the development of the T7.315, from our engineering teams to the whole Basildon plant team, who set up a brand new dedicated assembly line and new processes to ensure consistently high quality on every unit leaving the line.”

Vaderstad Spirit R
Modern design and innovative technology
............................................................................................................................................................................................... Väderstad continues to develop seed drills for European agriculture. The latest is Spirit R 300-400S. An entirely new version, designed from the ground up by Spirit with even more positive characteristics than today’s machines. It can also be equipped with E-Control and the unique SeedEye solution. Spirit R 300-400S is available in 3 and 4 metre working widths. The newly developed seed drill incorporates many innovations in several respects, all with ground-breaking technical solutions. It is equipped with E-Control and Gateway. Spirit R 300-400S is available with 12.5 or 16.7 cm row spacing.
The working platform is located at the side of the seed hopper, making all parts easily accessible when filling. The fan is located high up and integrated into the front of the seed hopper to minimise the intake of dust, at the same time as all sensitive components are protected. The solution gives the feed system enhanced durability. The air distribution system has low oil requirements and is adapted to smaller tractors.

Amazone Award Kubota Vision Three Silver Medals
Grand X Series
2015 sees Amazone being rewarded once again for its hi-tech innovations and as the start of world’s most important and biggest agriculture machinery trade fair draws closer, the Innovations Commission has awarded Amazonen-Werke three silver medals. The first medal was given for EasyCheck, the digital, mobile test kit for determining the lateral distribution of centrifugal fertiliser spreaders; the Innovations Commission recognised the significant increase in the efficiency of the process as well as the organisational benefits from this simplification in checking the lateral distribution of fertiliser spreaders. Instead of the normal collecting trays found in the classic, 16 tray mobile test kit, EasyCheck needs only lightweight rubber mats and a newly developed Smartphone APP to check and to optimise the lateral distribution and the adjustment of the spreader. Thanks to EasyCheck in future this requires about only one quarter of the time needed to carry out a test and so will result in a higher acceptance of the technique and thus lead to more customers making those checks. The second medal is awarded to AmaSpot, the sensor controlled individual nozzle switching with low drift injector nozzle technology. AmaSpot is an innovation which Amazone has developed in co-operation with the companies Rometron and Agrotop. The decisive innovations here include the GreenSense infrared sensor fitted to the sprayer boom which allow the scanning of the entire field surface and which differentiate between green plants and bare ground. In addition, the system features new pulse width modulation nozzles which open and close in a split second and thus allow the on and off switching to the exact centimetre even at high forward speeds of up to 20 km/h. This teamwork of sensors and nozzles initially enables the precise application of herbicides just to targeted areas – right down to the individual plant: The sensor detects the green plant and the nozzle applies the herbicide exactly at this position. In this way AmaSpot does away with full area total herbicide application and only treats part areas where in fact weeds or volunteer grains are growing. When using glyphosate agents, between 20% and 80%, depending on drilling techniques, can be saved in comparison with full area treatments.
Kubota UK is helping its customers gear up for winter with the launch of its new ‘Vision’ campaign – a limited edition upgrade available on its high performance M128GX-II and M135GX-II agricultural tractors. Running until the 31st December 2015, Kubota’s promotion now means that with any new purchase of an M128GX-II or M135GX-II model, customers receive a Vision upgrade pack (worth over £1000). The Vision pack includes enhanced LED work lights, enhanced LED driving lights, twin beacons and rear mudguard extensions, enhancing the product in readiness for the winter season. Rob Edwards, business development manager for Kubota Agriculture, commented: “The launch of this limited edition campaign is all about adding value to our product and service proposition, both to our dealer network and their end-user customers. “We know it’s a challenging market out there currently. However, despite this, I am pleased that our MGX-II Series is going from strength to strength. We believe that the introduction of our new Vision campaign will further help our dealers increase sales opportunities for this range of high performance farm tractors.”

News from Kuhn
Round and square baler focus at Welsh Winter Fair
............................................................................................................................................................................................... KUHN Farm Machinery will display its large capacity fixed chamber round baler – the FB 3130 – and its auto-loading square and round bale wrapper – the new SW 4014 – at the RWAS Winter Fair in Builth Wells on 30th November and 1st December 2015.
Auto-loading bale wrapper
The new SW 4014 is an updated version of KUHN’s range topping square and round bale wrapper, the SW 4004, which now features a fully automatic loading facility which increases the machine’s bale wrapping capacity and improves operator comfort. Capable of wrapping square bales up to (W x H x L) 120cm x 140cm x 200cm and round bales up to 150cm in diameter, the SW 4014 has an operational width of 4.00 metres and a compact, 2.50 metre transport width. The baler is equipped with KUHN’s unique AUTOLOAD system which uses a laser to detect square bales as the machine approaches. The laser automatically scans the length of the bale and sets the loading arms into their pre-load position. The machine then automatically loads, wraps and
unloads bales. This not only improves operating efficiency and speed (users are reporting up to a 15% increase in daily bale wrapping capacity) but also reduces operator fatigue. The SW 4014 is ISOBUS compatible and uses KUHN’s IntelliWrap™ system to provide optimal film distribution across the entire circumference of the bale: the Intelliwrap system allows the operator to select between four and nine layers of film to be applied, with the wrapping film being pre-stretched as it is applied to create a tight seal and reduce film usage. The film is then cut and held ready for the next bale by two “scissors-type” film cutters. KUHN will also display the latest version of its round baler, the FB 3130, at the Winter Fair. The MkII FB range of fixed chamber balers includes a number of new features which improve baling speed, quality and efficiency. The latest FB balers are available with two different intake rotors – KUHN’s OPTIFEED or OPTICUT 14 systems – both of which share the same 2.30m pickup width for maximum productivity.

Flock thinning Avian Flu To be banned from New Year
The biggest threat?
UK - From the new year a procedure known as thinning, where a proportion of chickens are removed from a shed for slaughter earlier than the rest, will be banned for animal welfare reasons on farms rearing to RSPCA standards. The RSPCA said that the new rules could also be beneficial to consumers, after a study by the European Food Safety Authority reported that thinning is linked to increased rates of campylobacter in chickens. Dr Marc Cooper, chicken welfare specialist at the RSPCA, said: “Our ban on thinning will be a major step forward for the welfare of chickens. “Once again the RSPCA is leading the way on farm animal welfare by setting these pioneering standards for indoor reared chickens and we hope other farm assurance schemes will follow suit.” The thinning process involves rearing the birds to the maximum stocking density permitted and then removing a proportion of them to lower the density. This can take place several times before all the birds are finally removed from the shed. The animal welfare organisation said that thinning can be a stressful experience for the birds as their feed is removed to allow catching teams to roundup the birds more easily. The RSPCA added that the temperature inside the shed can also drop, particularly during the winter, as teams of catchers enter. Dr Cooper added: “I hope that producers who are not currently rearing to RSPCA welfare standards will follow suit and ban thinning but without implementing other compensatory management practices, such as increasing stocking densities, that could have a negative impact on welfare.” From January 1 2016 farmers rearing to RSPCA welfare standards under the RSPCA Assured label will not be permitted to thin their flocks.
ANALYSIS - With three outbreaks in the last year, avian influenza was a key topic at the recent Egg and Poultry Industry Conference (EPIC) for the UK poultry sector. Jackie Linden reports on several of the meeting’s key presentations on this topic There is a constant low risk of low-pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) as the disease is endemic in wild birds and the virus is constantly circulating globally, warned Chief Veterinary Officer with the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), Nigel Gibbens. Globally, occasional outbreaks of highly pathogenic AI (HPAI) come at a high cost to producers and some risk to human health, he said. There were three unrelated outbreaks in the UK in the last year – two of HPAI and one LPAI – but thankfully, they were detected early and the virus did not infect further farms after each initial outbreak. Nigel Gibbens, the UK's Chief Veterinary Officer, talked about the need for improved biosecurity In contrast, the 223 outbreaks in the United States and loss of 48 million affected layers and turkeys this year had “devastating consequences” for the poultry industry there, he said. Mr Gibbens stressed the need for poultry producers to protect their business using already wellknown biosecurity measures, and for everyone in the industry to remain vigilant and to report any suspicion of disease to the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) or other responsible authority. “In the last year, there has been a massive worldwide impact of avian influenza,” said Andrew Jorêt of Noble Foods, representing the British Egg Industry Council (BEIC) and conference president. In the UK, one farm was hit in Lancashire in July as well as a Hampshire flock with low-pathogenic disease. Following this experience, he said, a whole range of industry partners came together to review the situation and learn lessons for the future. Andrew Jorêt said the world had seen a "massive impact" of avian influenza in the last year Among the main issues is “outbreak housing”; only free-range producers in the Protection Zone are required to keep their poultry housed. There is a lack of clarity over the status of those whose birds are further from the outbreak and the industry would like to see that area extended considerably for a period of around seven days while the outbreak is thoroughly investigated by Defra. There are also concerns about the capability of Defra if there were to be multiple AI outbreaks requiring mass slaughter and disposal of birds, as occurred in the US this year. If infected farms are not dealt with quickly, they represent “an enormous virus factory”, he said, and spread the infection further.

Words of wisdom
From Steve Birchall Poultry Services Limited
............................................................................................................................................................................................... Industry developments and pressure from the supply chain are turning the spotlight on more efficient cleaning units as a way to increase performance while reducing antibiotics use. The packers and retailers are demanding less independance on the use of antibiotics to control disease so producers need to respond to this. To control disease and maintain production, the industry has to explore and adopt alternative ways to reduce the pathogen risk to birds. Better hygiene practices, based on more efficient cleaning of housing and equipment combined with strict biosecurity is an obvious starting point. It is entirely logical to get buildings as clean as possible before repopulating them to reduce the disease threat before the new birds arrive. New stock are under stress brought about by combination factors including transport, handling, vaccination and being exposed to new disease threats. The more hat can be done to reduce disease threats, the better. There is a real scope to improve the effectiveness of cleaning of all types of poultry housing but the starting point is a change of mind set. Too many producers regard cleaning as a “must do, uninteresting and mundane chore, something that has to be done and the sooner it is done the better, however, nothing could be further from the truth. Cleaning should be seen as an integral part of a production system which can have a significant impact on performance, costs and profit. An efficient well planned and implemented cleaning procedure can reduce the disease threat to birds leading to better performance. It can also save time and reduce costs. An effective routine comprises of two different stages - cleaning and disinfection. Cleaning is essential to remove the environment in which pathogens thrive and to expose them to the subsiquent disinfectant. You can not disinfect dirt
unless soiling is removed, the pathogens will be protected from the disinfectant. The cleaning phase is crucial but this is not a case of taking an ardent approach with a high pressure power washer. While you can blast away some soiling, you will not remove the fats and proteins which make up much of the dirt on the walls and other surfaces. In addition, the use of high pressure creates an aerosol effect which can actually spread the pathogens and make them worse. To achieve an effective clean it is essential to apply a detergent and then to rinse away under low pressure followed by the application of disinfectant. Effective cleaning will help prevent the economic loss associated with outbreaks and is considerably cheaper than the cost of treating an outbreak with medicines. Using chemical detergents ensures that soiling is removed before disinfection resulting in a reduction in bacterial levels prior to restocking, giving the new birds the best possible start. Thorough cleaning based on a two stage routine could have a big impact on future profits and turn cleaning from a chore into a profit driver.

New name, New look Museum
It’s all change at the Heritage Motor Centre...
...............................................................................................................................................................................................
The Heritage Motor Centre, home to the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust, announced a number of exciting new changes on Friday 13th November. The world’s largest collection of historic British cars is re-branding the name of its venue at Gaydon to the British Motor Museum, and undertaking a major refurbishment of its Museum this winter as well as unveiling a new £4m Collections Centre. The change of name to the British Motor Museum will more accurately reflect this Accredited Museum’s recently achieved Arts Council England ‘Designated’ status which confirms the national and international significance of its collections. An investment of £1.1m by the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust will transform the Museum at Gaydon, which will close to the public from 30 November to allow the refurbishment to take place. The changes will result in a much more visually exciting and immersive display, designed to appeal to both current fans as well as new audiences yet to experience all that it has to offer. An introductory gallery within the new visitor entrance will set the scene and flow into distinctive new themed zones, including ones for movie cars, prototypes and sports cars. The popular ethos of allowing visitors to get up close to the exhibits will not change, but there will be different ways to view the cars, with many on raised plinths and some at eye level. Families and enthusiasts alike will be able to stroll along the Time Road, look under more open bonnets, and enjoy new interactive content including sound, film and touch screens. Whether the visitor is 3 or 103 years of age, there will be something about each car
and its history to fascinate. The final element of the multi-million revamp is the new Collections Centre. Supported by Heritage Lottery Fund, Jaguar Land Rover and the Garfield Weston Foundation, as well as the two charitable Trusts involved, the £4m project will store around 250 vehicles from the reserve collections of the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust and the Jaguar Heritage Trust. Many of these vehicles are one of a kind and most have never been seen by the public. A new team of volunteers will take visitors on a ‘behind-the-scenes’ tour to view both the cars and the conservation work in progress in the historic vehicle workshops. Entry to the Collections Centre will be included within the Museum ticket price and tours can be booked on arrival. Julie Tew, Managing Director at the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust said: "We are delighted to announce these exciting new changes which will significantly enhance our status and appeal. The Museum refurbishment and the new Collections Centre will enrich our visitors’ experience and showcase our collections to their full potential. Not only will our prized collection of 300 historic British cars be far more accessible, but our Museum will give people the chance to learn more about the past, present and future of the British motor industry, its technology and its people.” The transition to the new name begins once the Museum closes for its redevelopment from the 30 November and the venue will be officially known as the British Motor Museum when the Museum and Collections Centre re-open to the public on Saturday 13 February 2016.
