Vicon - New features New Holland - T6.140 New features for 2015 model Vicon Fertiliser Spreaders

JG Plant - New Holland solution

A host of new features are being introduced on the Vicon Rotaflow spreader range for the 2015 season to further increase accuracy and efficiency. Spread widths up to 54m are now possible with the RO-XL and RO-XL EDW GEOcontrol when equipped with high lift vanes. It is easy to check working widths and spreading potential on these latest models using the spreading charts available through the revised www.viconspreadingcharts.com, or the AutosetApp on the IsoMatch Tellus terminal or via the spreading charts App for smartphones. The Autoset App connects the IsoMatch Tellus universal in-cab terminal with the spreader and automatically adjusts the spreader according to settings entered into the App by the operator. After entering data into the terminal (working width, application rate, forward speed, distribution size and density of the fertiliser, and the selection of shape and product type), the operator is given setting advice for the product. This setting advice data can then be sent to the spreader, which automatically adjusts its settings to suit. Additional changes to the spreader range include a hydraulic border spreading plate on all models except the RO-C, to provide control of border spreading from the tractor cab. There is also a new TrimFlow border spreading system too, and this is available for left- and right-hand spreading, making it possible to spread in a very small field using both TrimFlow mechanisms simultaneously. Mudguards now protect the spreader against dirt and water being thrown up from the tractor wheels, while a new parking frame makes it easy to store and transport the spreader using pallet forks. LED rear lights are also part of the standard specification. Prices for the Vicon Rotaflow range start from £3,513 for the RO-C, and extend to £17,396 for the RO-XL EDW with GEOcontrol.

T6 drives off for quick round of seed drilling at Pennard Golf Course Perched 200 feet up on the cliffs of the south Wales coast, overlooking some of the UK’s most beautiful shoreline, Pennard Golf Club describes itself perfectly as the “links in the sky”. The sport has been enjoyed at Pennard, on the Gower peninsula, since 1896. Over the years it has become such a gem that American golf writer James W. Finegan was moved to describe its surface as worth crossing an ocean to play on. It’s a big responsibility for Head Greenkeeper Dean Thomas, for whom finding the right machinery is a key ingredient to keeping the grass in perfect condition for its members – and the occasional American from across the Atlantic. One of the most important tasks at the end of the summer season is replenishing the fairways’ grass with a seed drill in October; a job for which speed is the essence to minimise disruption to players but without risking damage to the carefully manicured surface. The solution came from J.G. Plant, a New Holland dealership based in Bridgend, Glamorgan, which provided Dean with a T6.140 tractor – the perfect utility workhorse balancing power with sure-footedness. Fitted with extra wide Trelleborg tyres for minimal ground pressure, the T6.140 had the power to pull the heavy seeder and drill the fairways with 80 bags of seed – all in just one pass. The task was done in a week. Dean explained: “It was a challenge because our fairways are some of the most undulating in Wales. Basically we needed something that could take the fairway seeder which is twice the weight of the greens seeder. We needed a big tractor. “The T6.140 was brilliant. It was so simple to use one of my kids could have driven it – it was that easy. It followed the inclines very well and it never felt dodgy; it was very stable and it did not struggle at all.

Upgraded New Holland tractor range Powerful performance and fuel delivery

............................................................................................................................................................................................... ·Upgraded T8 delivers more power and maintains high fuel efficiency with ECOBlue™ Hi-eSCR technology. · A host of improvements add up to greatly enhanced operator comfort ·Servicing and maintenance are easier than ever New Holland Agriculture has upgraded the T8 Series with its ECOBlue™ Hi-eSCR technology for compliance with Tier 4B emissions standards. The entire range is more powerful than its predecessor and has maintained its excellent fuel efficiency. The upgrade also introduces a host of improvements to the operator’s comfort and convenience, with enhancements for machine setting and maintenance. “The T8 Series delivers the most powerful conventional tractors in current production,” stated Luca Mainardi, Head of Tractor and Precision Land Management Product Management, “and with the ECOBlue™ Hi-eSCR technology their performance has improved even further. Our longsighted approach to emissions standards, adopting at an early stage SCR for our machines above 120 hp, is delivering great advantages for our customers and it has proved to be the right choice, as this technology is now accepted as

the industry standard for high horsepower equipment.” Upgraded T8 delivers more power and maintains high fuel efficiency with ECOBlue™ Hi-eSCR technology The rated and maximum powers have been increased on all five models of the range, significantly improving productivity. For demanding hydraulic, PTO and transport applications, Engine Power Management delivers up to a full 71 more horsepower on top of this. For example, the T8.320 is rated at 250 hp, but with EPM will produce up to 320 hp when it is needed. With ECOBlue™ Hi-eSCR technology, the engine breathes clean fresh air, so that its reaction times when placed under load are significantly faster than that of Tier 3 equivalent models. This means the tractor will maintain constant speed in changeable conditions when pulling a heavy trailer, never slowing down, with a consequent boost to productivity. This improvement in performance has been achieved while maintaining operating costs and fuel consumption at the low levels of the previous Tier 4A T8 Series. In fact, fuel use is still 10% better than it is on T8000 Tier 3 tractors, while low fluid consumption and long 600 hour service intervals keep operating costs down. The ECOBlue™ Hi-eSCR technology developed by FPT Industrial is exceptionally efficient and has 95% NOx conversion efficiency, the highest in the industry. It is an evolution of the existing ECOBlue™ SCR system. This presents customers with the great advantage that they will experience no change in the operation of their T8 tractor, as they are already familiar with this technology. A host of improvements add up to greatly enhanced operator comfort The upgrade to the T8 Series introduces a host of improvements that result in greater comfort for the operator and reduce their fatigue when working long days. The Intelliview IV monitor, now standard on T8 tractors, introduces setting improvements that enhance operating convenience, such as simplified setting and adjustment of the pull away gear, and the provision of pop-up messages to confirm adjustments made. The new Multi Function Handle has more responsive, reduced effort keys that are backlit for better nighttime visibility. On Ultra Command models, Ground Speed Management target speeds are set with a thumb wheel. For working after dark, operators will greatly appreciate the two new optional LED field light packages, which significantly increases the intensity of the lighting all around the tractor and, most importantly, at greater distances. This means that the operator will be able to continue working in the evenings with much less fatigue and won’t have to slow down on account of diminishing daylight.

Milk to remain ‘white gold’

EU Farm Commissioner Phil Hogan speaks to the press about CAP Reform and the dairy industry in Brussels.

............................................................................................................................................................................................... Tassos Haniotis is the Director of the Directorate for Economic Analysis, Perspectives and Evaluations Communicator within DG Agri in the European Commission. DAIRY CRISIS: What crisis? THERE is no crisis currently running in the European dairy industry declared EU Farm Commissioner Phil Hogan as he spoke to journalists last week in Brussels. Irishman Hogan stated with average milk prices through Europe running around 32.4 cents per litre that he was playing down any sort of crisis. The Commissioner, speaking on his 90th day since first appointed, said the average came from European milk market observatory websites. Although quoting prices from the website Hogan did not accept prices were as low as around 22 to 24 pence per litre Northern Ireland and that farmers in other parts of the UK were experiencing low prices. Prices do vary across Europe with the latest statistics (January 2015) showing prices as high as 57.46 euros per 100kgs (46.75 pence per litre) in Cyprus; to a low of 23.19 euros per 100kgs (18.87 pence per litre) in Latvia. The latest figures from the UK are dated November 2014 and register at 35.63 euros per 100kgs (28.99 pence per litre). The Commissioner did say that he continued to support dairy farmers in Finland and the Baltic States who were facing difficulties due to the ongoing Russian ban. Hogan said: “The average milk price in early 2013 was 32.5 cents per litre and in November 2014 it was 32.4 cents per litre. I don’t want to talk the industry into a crisis when prices are holding. “Milk production in the EU Member States is up 5.5

6 | Agri News | February 2015

per cent in 2014 but global demand is falling.” Later speaking at the Farm Council in Brussels, Commissioner Hogan said that most dairy market problems are due to world oversupply and lower demand. He explained that the average EU milk prices hit record levels in 2013 and 2014 and the current price is lower, but still above 2010-2012 levels. A dairy “safety net” remains necessary, also after the milk quotas are abolished, and therefore he will propose an extension to the Private Storage Aid (PSA) for Skimmed Milk Powder (SMP) and butter beyond February 2015. Also addressing the journalists was Tassos Haniotis, a director of economics within the Commission, who predicted milk would remain the ‘white gold’ for the next ten years. In his market outlook he predicted that milk would average out at 350 euros per tonne until 2024. Haniotis said: “With the increase in world population demand for milk and dairy products will also increase and I see prices averaging out at 350 euros per tonne over the next ten years. “Future extra global demand for milk will be met mostly by Europe accounting for an extra 12 million tonnes in ten years. New Zealand production is limited by natural constraints, so opportunities for EU farmers are great.” Milk deliveries could reach 158 million tonnes by 2024, which is 12 million tonnes more than in 2014. However, the expansion of EU milk production is limited by increasing production in competing parts of the world, the rate of world import growth, environmental constraints and the limited potential for higher consumption in the EU. Production is expected to concentrate further in regions with lower production costs and where farmers and dairies have invested most. Milk powders and cheese will absorb most of the additional milk produced in the EU. Higher cheese production (11 million tonnes by 2024) is driven mainly by domestic consumption. Powders (skimmed milk, whole milk and whey) are the easiest and cheapest way to transport milk, and more than half of traded dairy products are powders. By 2024, SMP production is expected to reach 1.6 million tonnes, driven by positive world demand. WMP production and exports could increase slightly, while whey powder production and trade are expected to expand significantly. Increased milk and SMP production go hand in hand with increased butter production, most of which will be absorbed domestically.

Honours for Welsh farming leaders Nine industry leaders advanced to fellows

............................................................................................................................................................................................... Nine hardworking and deserving industry leaders have been given the honour of being advanced to fellows of the Royal Agricultural Societies for their continued contribution to the agricultural and rural industries in Wales. It was with great pleasure that the Welsh National Panel and the National Moderators Panel for the Council of Awards of Royal Agricultural Societies have approved the advancement of nine associate members and thus granted them the coveted title of Fellowship of the Royal Agricultural Societies (FRAgS). Edwin Hughes of Cornist Ganol Farm, Flint was made an associate in 2009 following his submission ‘Farming and Community Activities’. Since retiring from his position of Director of the Wynnstay Group, Mr Hughes has continued to make an outstanding contribution to the farming industry and his community activities. As a senior Justice of the Peace, Mr Hughes sits on the National Council of the Magistrates Association and the Lord Chief Justice’s Advisory Committee for Wales. Mr Hughes has also played a significant role in farming politics, serving as the County NFU Chairman and also continues to serve as the founder and vice chairman of the Flintshire Vintage and Classic Tractor Society. Meurig James of Whitland, Carmarthenshire was made an associate in 2009 following his submission ‘The role of type classification in the breeding and managing of profitable, long living, dairy cows’. Mr James now holds the position of Breeds Development Executive for Holstein UK where he is largely responsible for influencing the Holstein breed, other dairy breeds and safe guarding the image of cattle showing in the modern era. Mr James has also recently been an officer at the Carmarthen chamber of agriculture and he continues to be involved with the top dairy shows throughout the UK where he is well respected by all breeders and showmen. Peredur Hughes of Llanddeusant, Holyhead, Anglesey was made an associate in 2009 following his submission ‘A lifetime in agriculture, a moment in agri-politics’. Mr Hughes has continued to make an outstanding commitment to agriculture throughout recent years by chairing the Welsh Governments Animal Health and Welfare Steering Group. Mandated to give Welsh Government and the industry direction in dealing with a raft of animal health diseases and welfare issues, Mr Hughes works closely with Dr Christianne Glossop, the Welsh Government’s Chief Veterinary Officer. The steering group was replaced by the Wales Animal Health and Welfare Group of which Mr Hughes was asked to be the chair. David Jones of Machynlleth, Powys was made an associate in 2009 following his submission ‘My contribution to the wool industry and its produce’. Before his retirement, Mr Jones worked for the British Wool board for 25 years and is widely recognised as one of the most knowledgeable people in the UK on every type of wool in the British wool clip. Mr Jones is an internationally renowned wool judge and also sits on both the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society’s shearing committee and the National Sheep Association Cymru committee. Mr Jones has also been awarded the John Gittins Memorial award 8 | Agri News | February 2015

and the George Hedley Memorial award in recognition of his contribution to the British wool industry. Tegwyn Jones of Mallwyd, Machynlleth, Powys was made an associate in 2009 following his submission ‘Farming conservation and energy production’. By exploring new ways to utilise the family hill farm, Mr Jones has expanded his farming enterprises to encompass and make full use of the available natural resources, which now include two very successful hydro-electric schemes. To share his knowledge and innovative skills and determination to be successful, Mr Jones has hosted many farm visits and undertaken numerous talks to farming organisations and training groups where he encourages others to ‘think outside the box’. Gareth Vaughan of Dolfor, Powys was made an associate in 2009 following his submission ‘Investing in the future’. During his role as President of the Farmers Union of Wales (FUW), Mr Vaughan has travelled far and wide representing fellow farmers and his contribution to the Welsh farming community was recognised by the Queen in the 2011 New Years Honours list. Since his retirement from the FUW Mr Vaughan has remained extremely active in the industry, sitting on committees, chairing FWAG Cymru and supporting charities. Robert Alwyn Rees of Pennal, Machynlleth, Powys was made an associate in 2009 following his submission ‘Genetic improvement of Welsh mountain sheep and cattle’. Mr Rees continues to be a pioneer in all aspects of his farming career. His achievements in developing and using genetic knowledge are now legendary and, as proof, his stock consistently achieves record prices in the auction rings and many accolades in the show ring. A keen ambassador for the industry, Mr Rees is always ready to give encouragement and share his experience and knowledge with others. Bob Parry of Bryngwran, Holyhead, Anglesey was made an associate in 2004 following his submission ‘My role in Welsh agriculture’. Mr Parry has played a very influential role in the shaping of Welsh agriculture within the Farmers’ Union of Wales (FUW) as Chair of the Livestock Committee, Deputy President and President, a role he held for 12 years. His knowledge and expertise have helped with many decisions and discussions including compensation for farmers as a result of the Chernobyl fallout, live exports, the CAP reform, promoting Welsh lamb internationally and the setting up of the Beef Promotion Council. Mr Parry continues to make an outstanding contribution to his community in his role as County Councillor. John T Davies of Eglwyswrw, Pembrokeshire was made an associate in 2009 following his submission ‘Promoting agriculture within the public sector’. Mr Davies continues to be a prominent and influential figure in Welsh affairs and a tireless supporter of agriculture and the rural economy. In his role as Chairman of the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society’s Board of Directors, Mr Davies provides strong leadership and guidance and acts as an effective bridge between the society, its members, the wider rural community and the Welsh Government.

Bobcat increase productivity

Bobcat utility vehicles offer exceptional performance for increased productivity ............................................................................................................................................................................................... New 2015 Bobcat utility vehicles offer exceptional performance for increased productivity Workers wanting to get tasks done more quickly and efficiently won’t have to look any further than the new 2015 four-wheel drive Bobcat® 3400 and 3400XL utility vehicles. As a leader in compact equipment, Bobcat Company has launched the new 3400 and 3400XL, with improved suspension systems, new industry-leading features, industryleading payload and towing, faster travel speeds and more integrated accessories. Both the 3400 and 3400XL models have a sealed constant velocity transmission and are available with two engine configurations: a 40-horsepower (570 cc) gas engine or a 24-horsepower (1120 cc) diesel engine. The gas and diesel engines provide operators with greater performance — up to 40 mph with a dealer-installed kit. The 3400 and 3400XL gas units provide easier start-up and responsive acceleration with an electronic fuel injection system, which adjusts to temperature and altitude changes. The 3400 and 3400XL diesel units have automatic glow plugs that adjust to colder starting conditions.

Acceleration is not a problem with these vehicles, as they can gain speed smoothly and quickly. An ergonomic lever allows 3400 and 3400XL utility vehicle operators to shift between high, low, neutral and park positions. The four-wheel drive system allows operators to shift on-the-fly to adjust to changing ground conditions. For machine protection, both models have a full skid plate, a constant velocity shield and an optional brush guard to protect the undercarriage, engine, transmission and radiator when traveling over rough terrain, logs, rocks and other debris. Improved suspension New Bobcat 3400 and 3400XL utility vehicles provide both an adjustable independent front dual A-arm suspension and an adjustable rear de Dion multi-link suspension system. The new suspension system provides the operator and passengers with a more comfortable ride, tighter turning radius, increased payload capacity and more stability when towing. Each utility vehicle wheel moves independently, keeping all wheels in contact with the ground, for maximum traction.

Fresh air, fine views and home cooked local produce..

............................................................................................................................................................................................... With fresh air and fine views, home cooked and locally produced food and drink, Farm Stay UK provides our guests the best way to enjoy the British Countryside. Farm Stay UK has been promoting farm accommodation for over 30 years and in that time our guests have spent over £3 billion in the rural economy. As a farmer’s co-operative all of funds go into the direct promotion of our farm accommodation. From this summer, our guests can now also enjoy a brand new state of the art website featuring online availability calendars and booking engine. As we say at Farm Stay “Wake Up To The Country”. There is no better way to start the day. About Farm Stay UK. Farm Stay UK was established in 1983 as The Farm Holiday Bureau, with 23 local groups, through the leadership and support provided by ADAS (then fully financed by MAFF, now DEFRA), the Royal Agricultural Society of England (RASE), the National Tourist Boards (inc. the BTA), and the magazine Farmers Weekly. We still work closely with both national and local tourism agencies and currently have over 1000 accommodation businesses. A regional and local structure still exists to this day to promote better co-operation and best practise at a local level. Our members are in all corners of the UK across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Farm Stay Today Farm Stay UK is a “Not-For-Profit” farmer owned consortium, registered under the Industrial & Provident Societies Act. The main objective is to more effectively market the accommodation provided by its members thus helping increase occupancy rates and incomes. Farm Stay UK is the market leader in its field, recognised for its innovation and success within the tourism industry at home and abroad. Quality is regarded as fundamental and all properties must

Farm Stay UK was also among the first to promote its members’ services and facilities through the Internet and currently operates a very powerful and productive website. The company finances its entire operation through membership fees boosted, wherever possible, by income from sponsorship or advertising. All funds are used within the business ensuring every penny is utilised and not returned in dividends. Our Current Structure Farm Stay, as a national membership organisation, is run by a Board with 11 Regional Directors plus a Chairman, and managed by a Chief Executive with a small staff from our Head Office at the National Agricultural Centre, Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire. Members have the chance to meet together at the Annual Conference/AGM whilst each region meets separately in spring and autumn. Local groups meet more often depending upon requirements. Cushman Hauler Pro and PRO X

Cushman Hauler Pro and PRO X utility vehicles travel 50 miles between charges

............................................................................................................................................................................................... Ransomes Jacobsen, the UK and European distributor of Cushman utility vehicles, has introduced the all-electric Cushman Hauler PRO and PRO X, which feature a 72-volt AC drivetrain providing the range and power once exclusive to petrol-powered machines. "This new Cushman Hauler PRO gives Course Managers the range and power of a petrolpowered utility vehicle, but in a silent, all-electric package that is fast becoming the norm," said Ransomes Jacobsen’s Richard Tyrrell, Product Manager for Cushman and E-Z-GO vehicles. "Cushman has a history of providing the turfcare sector with reliable vehicles to tackle any job and the Hauler PRO is no different." The 72-volt drivetrain in the new Hauler PRO is an upgrade from more traditional 48-volt systems and will give up to 50 fully-loaded miles between charges. The patented AC Drive technology also ensures that the Hauler PRO maintains consistent power and performance from the first pre-dawn chores to the last light of dusk, without the noisy drone of a petrol engine. The AC Drive technology is up to 25 percent more energy-efficient than DC technology, and also provides for unique features such as regenerative braking that recharges the batteries whenever the vehicle’s brakes are applied and also speed control to maintain constant speeds up and down steep slopes. The Hauler PRO is equipped with a standard onboard charger, which provides the convenience of charging the vehicle at any outlet within a property and eliminates the need for a separate bulky charger. An optional 12V outlet is also available. A standard limited-slip differential provides for greatly improved traction on wet or loose ground, while helping to protect fairways from damage due

20 | Agri News | February 2015

to wheel slippage. The Hauler PRO features a maximum load capacity of 454 kilograms and is available as standard with a 0.269 cubic metres (269 litres) cargo bed. A 0.422 cubic metres (422 litres) aluminium cargo bed is available as a factoryinstalled option for facilities that require more cargo space. The Hauler PRO X has all the attributes of the Hauler PRO, but due to its lifted suspension has a higher ground clearance enabling it to tackle the roughest terrain. Visit www.youtube.com/CushmanCommunication to learn more about how the Cushman Hauler PRO can facilitate any golf course’s needs. About Cushman Since 1901, Cushman vehicles have been recognised light-transportation solutions for commercial and industrial applications. Today, Cushman products include more than 10 different vehicle models, from this rugged 1600XD-R 4x4 utility vehicle, to the imposing Titan, a fully electric material-handling vehicle for indoor environments with a load capacity of 1,360 kgs, to the Minute Miser, perfectly suited for transporting people and small loads across large facilities. About Textron Inc. Textron Inc. is a multi-industry company that leverages its global network of aircraft, defence, industrial and finance businesses to provide customers with innovative solutions and services. Textron is known around the world for its powerful brands such as Bell Helicopter, Cessna Aircraft Company, Jacobsen, Kautex, Lycoming, E-ZGO, Greenlee, and Textron Systems.
