2016 is the.. Year of the Deere

............................................................................................................................................................................................... John Deere Limited celebrates its 50th anniversary in the UK and Ireland in 2016, starting with a special display at LAMMA (stand no G54). The company started trading from Langar in January 1966, and the original premises are still in use today as John Deere’s visitor centre and national parts distribution centre. One of the tractors sold by John Deere dealers 50 years ago, and on which the company started to build its reputation, was the 4020 Diesel. This 91hp six-cylinder tractor was the rst to appear on the UK market with a powershift transmission and became arguably the most popular tractor of its era. The rest of the John Deere Limited product line in 1966 included the 710, 5010 and 5020 tractors, ploughs, cultivators, disc harrows and the 530 and 630 combines. Langar’s own specially restored 4020, nicknamed BEV after its original registration plate, played a starring role in last November’s Lord Mayor’s Show in London, helping the Worshipful Company of Farmers and the NFU to promote the Back British Farming campaign. In a nod to the 2016 anniversary, it was chosen to parade alongside its modern day descendant, the new agship 620hp four-track 9620RX, to highlight just one aspect of the tremendous advances that have been

made in farming technology over the last 50 years. The tractors are standing side by side once again in the LAMMA display to help promote a very special event that will take place at Langar in September 2016. John Deere customers and fans are being invited to get involved in the 50th anniversary celebrations by visiting a dedicated page on the company’s website, which will be going live later in January at www.JohnDeere.co.uk/50years. Classic John Deere tractor and machinery owners visiting LAMMA 2016 also have an early chance to register their machines for this eld-based event, which aims to gather together examples of John Deere products sold through the company’s UK and Irish dealers during the period 1966 to 2016. There will be demonstration and working plots for those who would like to bring implements (preferably made by John Deere) and use them, plus parades and prizes. Owners of old and new John Deere machines are encouraged to submit an application form for the event, which are available on the John Deere stand at LAMMA and then downloadable from the John Deere website after the show.

Winter spells danger

Mild winter spells danger from increased weed pressure.

............................................................................................................................................................................................... With the winter’s exceptionally mild conditions continuing to dominate UK weather patterns, pea and bean growers should use a pre-emergence application of linuron and pendimethalin to protect spring sown crops from proli c weed populations. That is the advice from crop protection specialists, Adama, who advise that an effective preemergence treatment is the best way of kick-starting this spring’s herbicide programme. “The 2015-16 winter has, to date, been one of the mildest since records began,” explains Gemma Sparrow, Technical Specialist for Adama Agricultural Solutions. “Despite a brief cold snap during the rst half of January, weather conditions across the majority of the UK have remained abnormally mild. Spring weeds are, by nature, extremely aggressive, but if these conditions continue into February and March, the threat

of high weed populations is likely to be exacerbated further.” Peas and beans lack the vigour to dominate more competitive weeds such as Black bindweed, Chickweed and Fat hen, and therefore need species speci c herbicide protection to enable them to establish and grow away from weeds which would otherwise out-compete them. “The most effective preemergence protection plans will contain a mixture of two main actives, linuron and pendimethalin,” Gemma continues. “The former provides protection against key targets such as Black Nightshade, Cleavers and Black bindweed, while the latter works against Annual meadowgrass, Knotgrass and a wide selection of broadleaved weeds.” Gemma therefore advocates the use of a tank mix of Afalon® (450g/l linuron) and Anthem® (400g/l pendimethalin)* to

be applied as soon as ground conditions allow spraying equipment to travel. “Afalon is an effective residual herbicide for the control of a broad range of key spring weeds in peas, beans and a number of other eld vegetable crops,” Gemma outlines. “It provides a cost effective solution to the start of early season weed control programmes and is a exible tank mix partner for pendimethalin products such as Anthem. “Together, Afalon and Anthem have the ability to remove weed competition early and give spring-sown crops of peas and beans the best chance of reaching their full potential.” *Anthem has been granted an Extension of Authorisation for Minor Use (EAMU 1259 of 2014) as a pre-emergence herbicide for use on Field and Broad beans at growers own risk.

JCB big celebration

JCB celebrate production of 100,000th mini excavator

...............................................................................................................................................................................................

JCB today celebrated the production of its 100,000th mini excavator – with the promise of more innovative machines to come as the company builds on its position as an industry leader. JCB’s rst mini excavator – an 801 model weighing in at 1.4 tonnes – rolled off the production line in 1989 when just over 450 machines were made. By 1992 there were four models in the range and annual production rates had risen to 1,000 units. Today the company celebrated the production of its 100,000th compact excavator – a 10-tonne 100C-1. It is one of 22 models in today’s range which spans from one to 10 tonnes. All are manufactured at the JCB Compact Products factory in Cheadle, Staffordshire. The global mini excavator sector is one of the most competitive areas of the global construction equipment market and is worth an estimated £4 billion annually. More than 20

major manufacturers challenge for a slice of this valuable business and with almost 200,000 mini excavators sold around the world every year, it is the biggest single part of the annual 700,000-unit construction equipment market. JCB CEO Graeme Macdonald said: “JCB has an innovative, powerful and robust range of mini excavators which keep growing in popularity. From being a challenger in the market 25 years ago, JCB is now rmly established as an industry leader, setting trends for design innovation and manufacturing excellence. “To have produced 100,000 compact excavators really is something for the whole JCB team to celebrate and with more additions to the range due this year we can look forward to more growth in this important sector of the market.” JCB has been rising to the growing opportunity presented by the mini excavator sector in recent years with a £15 million investment in manufacturing technology and new product development. This has seen the launch in the last two years of brand new models including the 65R-1, 67C-1, 85Z1, 86C-1, 90Z-1 and 100C-1 models which compete in the six, eight, nine and 10 tonne weight categories respectively. JCB’s mini excavators were rst manufactured at the company’s plant Rugeley, Staffordshire, before production switched to JCB Compact Products in 1999 to cater for rapid expansion of the range. The company has won two Queen’s Awards for International Trade for huge increases in exports in 1994 and 2007. JCB Compact Products employs more than 350 at its site in Leek Road.

Tempo V

Reaping success in Holland

FHP Plus From Kverneland

...............................................................................................................................................................................................

Väderstad has delivered approx. 40 Tempos, mainly the Tempo V, to Holland. The threepoint linkage Tempo V ful lls a need for easily manoeuvered precision seed drills that can be simply manoeuvred to plant all areas of small or irregularly shaped elds. With an hectare cost of â‚Ź60,000 per hectare, every single square metre must be used optimally

Contractors appreciate the easy-to-handle planter and the possibility to sow several crops using just the one machine. Where they previously needed several machines to carry out the planting, now all they need is one. The crop sown most often using the Tempo V in Holland is maize silage. Around 230,000 hectare will be sown during the second half of April. Robertsons of Tain Ltd

New calls for Wales

Calls to halt ‘wasteful’ badger vaccination schemes in Wales

............................................................................................................................................................................................... The Farmers’ Union of Wales has repeated its long standing call for a science led policy to control TB in wildlife after the Welsh Government suggested the abandoned badger vaccination pilot in north Pembrokeshire could restart in 2017. Ministerial advice provided to the Welsh Government in 2012 suggested vaccination in the north Pembrokeshire Intensive Action Area (IAA) could cost Welsh farmers and the taxpayer an additional £3.5 million compared with a badger cull. “The results after four years of badger vaccination in the IAA appear to support the original assessment that vaccination would cost farmers and the taxpayers millions and save the lives of far fewer cattle than badger culling would have done,” said FUW Deputy President and north Pembrokeshire farmer Brian Thomas. “Based upon trials in other areas, we could have expected a thirty or forty percent reduction in cattle herd TB incidences by now, had the original plan to cull badgers gone ahead. Instead, matters in the area are no different to other comparable areas where badger vaccination has not taken place.” Mr Thomas was speaking after attending a Welsh Government brie ng session where the results of Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) modelling of badger vaccination strategies were presented. “A key focus of the modelling work carried out and the subsequent statement made by Welsh Government indicates a possible return

to badger vaccination in 2017. In our view that would mean returning to a pointless and costly exercise which has yet to show any positive impacts, whereas badger culling as originally planned would already have resulted in signi cant reductions in TB incidences.” No guarantee Mr Thomas said there was also no guarantee that the BCG vaccine used on badgers would be available by 2017. “There is currently a global shortage of BCG vaccine, and given that one badger dose can vaccinate twenty infants in regions where human TB is a huge problem, such as Africa, it would be immoral to deplete global vaccine stocks by vaccinating badgers.” The average cost of vaccinating each badger caught in the north Pembrokeshire Intensive Action Area has been around £700. “In the 12 months to the end of September 2015 the number of cattle culled in Wales due to TB was 7,380, an increase of 25 percent on the equivalent period to September 2014. That’s an equivalent to 20 cattle culled every day of the week.” Mr Thomas said farmers were doing their part in terms of controlling the disease, and accepted that cattle which represent a risk need to be destroyed. “Welsh Ministers need to recognise that other animals which represent a risk should also be controlled, and that to avoid the issue by spending millions on vaccinating badgers will simply make matters worse in the long run.”

...............................................................................................................................................................................................

Landini steps on the power with extended choice of mid-range tractors The Landini 6C Series which replaced the popular Powermondial in 2015 now comprises three models with the addition of a more powerful version with up to 140hp on tap. Like the 111hp and 121hp models, the new Landini 6-140C gets extra power when travelling on the road or operating a pto-driven eld implement like a muck spreader or power cultivator. Then, the 6-120C’s 111hp output goes to 121hp; the 6-130C’s climbs from 121hp to 133hp; and the 6-140C is elevated from 130hp to 140hp – a strong output for a tractor of this size. To make best use of the performance potential and suit different applications, all three models can have four-speed pto – that’s with ‘power’ and ‘economy’ settings for both 540rpm and 1000rpm – and two levels of speci cation. Base models have 66-litre/min open centre Timberlake Week St. Mary Devon EX22 6XG t: 01288 341326 www.cornishtractors.co.uk

gear pump hydraulics with an extra 30-litres/ min for the steering; 34in rear tyres; and a 40kph T-Tronic 36x12 transmission with threestep powershift operated by a thumb switch on the gear lever. A power shuttle with adjustable response is standard, giving ngertip control of forward and reverse selection. Choosing the higher-spec ‘LS’ version brings a more sophisticated 110-litre/min closed centre hydraulics system that pumps only on demand; taller 38in tyres for added grip and oatation; and a choice of 40kph Eco or 50kph transmissions that get the tractor to its destination fast using less fuel. The higher-spec version can also be equipped with hydraulic independent wishbone front axle suspension for the ultimate in ride and traction, along with mechanical cab suspension, which is also an option on the base version. The Master Class cab itself has a fresh interior design with well laid out controls and quality materials, a completely at oor making it easy to get in and out, and an instrument panel that moves with the steering wheel when this is adjusted for angle and reach. Outside, 14 powerful halogen lamps illuminate the tractor’s surroundings for safe and secure operation out in the eld or in and around buildings.

Mccormick

Spacious cab feature of new X4C

All-New Vicon Extra 736T

............................................................................................................................................................................................... •McCormick X4C range comprises four all-new cab or platform models •Power outputs from 64hp to 76hp with choice of transmissions •Open platform or new cab design with big glass area and low height Apart from the GM compact and F Series orchard tractors, the all-new X4C models are the smallest tractors in the McCormick range. Designed for applications that do not demand a lot of power but where light weight and compact dimensions are important characteristics, the tractors are available from McCormick dealers in Scotland – Thomas Murray Agricultural Engineers, Dundonald, Ayrshire; TH Engineering, Banksfoot near Dalswinton, Dumfries & Galloway; Fraser C Robb, Drymen near Glasgow; John Drysdale Agricultural Engineers, Kinneswood, Perthshire; Hamilton Tractors, Carnwath, Lanarkshire; J T Cormack, John O’Groats; and Brian Smith Engineers, Cornhill; Mark Wood Agri-Sales, Insch and Mearns Tractors, Laurencekirk in Aberdeenshire. Latest Deutz engines with good fuel economy and simple emissions control technology are under the bonnet of the 64hp X4.20C, 69hp X4.30C and 76hp X4.40C. The 75hp X4.35C has a Perkins engine to the preceding emissions standard, which gives it a distinct price advantage while stocks last. “The McCormick X4C design is unlike anything we’ve had in the range before,” points out McCormick product specialist Paul Wade at GB distributor AgriArgo UK. “These are thoroughly modern tractors with a great choice of features and speci cations to suit different users and applications.” Among those spec choices are two- or fourwheel drive; an open platform or modern driver’s cab; a Speed Four 12x12 or 16x16 creep transmission; synchro or power shuttle; and 2.7 tonne or 3.4 tonne linkage capacity.

Ground Breaking Suspension Concept for Constant Ground Pressure The brand new Vicon EXTRA 736T 3.60m mounted mower conditioner has taken mower suspension to the next level, lifting accuracy and productivity to new heights. The new suspension concept delivers constant ground pressure and hydraulic adjustment of overlap. The EXTRA 736T suspension concept is a next level development of the already known Vicon suspension concept, known for its accuracy. The mowing unit is suspended by four suspension arms that allow the mowing unit to oat independently oat over the eld, and adjust accurately to ground contours. Ground pressure is easily adjusted from the tractor seat, hydraulically and with an easy to read pressure scale on the mower for clear guidance. And that’s not all. The suspension also provides the EXTRA 736T with NonStop BreakAway protection across the full working width, with no limiting factor on the left hand side of the mower, giving the driver true peace of mind during operation. During mowing operation the carrying arm always remains even to the ground, giving the mowing unit the freedom to instantly compensate and oat across uneven ground contours. More importantly this provide the mower with constant ground pressure, exactly as when going up and down or adjusting sidewise to eld contours, as set by the user. The advantages are obvious, as it leads to less damage and faster regrowth from the stubble and minimum dirt into the crop. When lifting the mower on headlands, only the mowing unit is raised, while the headstock remains in a xed position. This provides the EXTRA 736T with a level ground clearance of 500mm across the full working width. The mowing unit is lowered evenly without one side touching the ground before the rest of the mower, avoiding unnecessary stress and wear on the mower.
