For Sprayer Repairs Air induction nozzles..

............................................................................................................................................................................................... I first had the idea of how to make an Air Induction Nozzle short back in the 1980s, which I suggested how to do it to my Superiors, I was severely ridiculed and told that I was an idiot and the idea wouldn’t work. I didn’t even try to pursue it any further, until I decided it was time to go Self Employed. I had a Customer who tried to do a good deed for a Lorry Driver, he pulled in to the side of the road, to allow the Lorry to pass, unfortunately as the Air Induction Nozzles were long, he caught it into the hedge, which caused him to break his Nozzle Bodies and Nozzles, that then triggered my initial thoughts on how to make the Nozzles Short, I couldn’t rest one night, I decided to go into the Garage and see if I could do this, I took a hold of a selection of Nozzles and thought I would try to alter them. I found it was a fairly simple idea to make them short. When I tested the alterations I immediately knew that this idea would work, once I knew it would work I then contacted many Manufacturers of Nozzles

which they seem to imply to me that they are very content to have Nozzles break, after this communication I then decided to look at the next problem in Air Induction Nozzles and make it much easier and simple to clean, I put a UK Patent on the Nozzle to make sure I would get a little bit of protection as most Companies do not tend to come up with ideas themselves, they would rather copy. I have had the Nozzles tested for LERAP, they have been approved on the 03, 035 and 04, unfortunately I do have to have the other Nozzles retested but this obviously has got to wait until I have enough Funds because small Businesses have to pay for everything and big Business get everything. You will see if you look on my Website, there are several videos showing how to use the Nozzles and clean, there is also one video which demonstrates how I test the Nozzle for impact, I am very certain that no other Company would be willing to have their Nozzle tested in the same way.

Air Induction Nozzles have been around now for a number of years. The main problems with these nozzles being that they are far too long and difficult to clean. I short-air-induction-nozzle therefore decided it was time something was done about this problem. Our Solution

Having worked with sprayers and farmers all my working life, to me it was clear what farmers wanted. I set about making molds so I could give the farmers an opportunity to make their own decisions on whether they like the product. The Jet is designed to obviously be short when in a nozzle body, it also has a tip on the insert which allows the chemicals to be mixed before it enters the nozzle itself.

New McCormick X7.650

Pro Drive delivers six cylinder power and refinement

............................................................................................................................................................................................... • McCormick X7.650 Pro Drive with 152hp rated, 160hp maximum • Semi-powershift 24x24 or 40x40 creep transmission, fourspeed pto • Choice of Premium and new Efficient specification, options and prices A new six-cylinder tractor has been launched at the Royal Highland Show to join the McCormick X7 Pro Drive series and bring a longer wheelbase, tough cast chassis and smoothrunning engine further down the power scale. The new McCormick X7.650 Pro Drive joins a range that goes from rated speed outputs of 135hp to 188hp and maxes out at 212hp with Power Plus boost on the top model. The newcomer slots in with 152hp from its 6.7-litre engine at rated speed, climbing to a peak output of 160hp for all operations. The new model is available to order now with the new Efficient specification introduced for the four-cylinder and smallest six-cylinder models in the current range and also in a Premium version with enhanced features and a wider choice of performance-orientated options. “We already have a fourcylinder tractor – the X7.450 Pro Drive – with the same peak power and torque outputs as the new model,” notes Paul Wade, product specialist at AgriArgo UK, the McCormick distributor for Great Britain. “But many operators like the characteristics of a six-cylinder tractor, including the added stability for operating heavy

4 | July 2016 | AgriNews

mounted implements that comes with an extra 410kg in weight and 150mm longer wheelbase.” When equipped to the new Efficient specification, the new model will also appeal to operators of MTX and XTX tractors of similar size and power, especially as it represents less of a jump in technology and price than the Premium version. “The MTX150 was always one of our best-selling tractors, so I’m sure operators thinking of making a change will take a close look at the Efficient X7.650 Pro Drive,” says Paul Wade. “It will also be a candidate for operators with the popular MC135 Power6 wanting a more powerful tractor for increased productivity with modern features but limited high-tech electronics.” The newcomer’s BetaPower engine, built to McCormick specification by FPT Industrial with a highly fuel-efficient SCR emissions control package, develops 152hp at 2200rpm rated speed. But the power curve rises from that point as revs are pulled down under increasing load to a peak of 160hp at 1900rpm, while maximum torque of 676Nm is reached at just 1500rpm. Operators can exploit these characteristics by shifting up to load the engine for maximum power, knowing that increasing reserves of torque are available to pull the tractor through tough areas of soil when ploughing or cultivating, or to climb an incline with trailed or pto-driven equipment.

Both versions of the new tractor have four-speed power take-off providing ‘power’ and ‘economy’ gearing to suit different applications, plus the opportunity to fit a 1000rpm pto drive with the optional 3500kg front hitch. The Efficient model is equipped with the 24x24 Pro Drive transmission, which has a justifiable reputation for its smooth operating, responseadjustable power shuttle and push-button four-speed powershift and range shifting. A creep gearbox option – which is standard on the Premium version – adds slower speeds for specialist drilling and other applications. Load-sensing variable output hydraulics are standard on both versions, delivering up to 123-litres/min from a piston pump, and 44-litres/min from a unit dedicated to steering and ancillaries such as the fourwheel drive and pto clutches. Controls for the transmission, pto and 6300kg electronic rear three-point hitch of the Efficient version are laid out on a new side console, along with levers for the three mechanical spool valves. These can be supplemented by an electrohydraulic valve operated from the multi-function controller and two mid-valves for lighttouch joystick operation of a McCormick MClassic or MPower loader. The Premium version’s console is mounted on a higherspecification air seat to bring all essential controls – and added features such as headland management – to the operator’s fingertips.

Super-Sized Kuhn Gyrotedders

get chassis and suspension updates for 2016

............................................................................................................................................................................................... KUHN Farm Machinery has upgraded its range of super-sized grass tedders, with its 13 and 17.2 metre machines both benefitting from a new chassis design and rotor lifting mechanism which give the machines higher ground clearance at headlands and improved contour-following on rough terrain. KUHN’s new GF 13012 and GF 17012 Gyrotedders enable users to ted up to 15 ha (37 ac) of grass per hour. The GF 13012 uses 12 tedder rotors to give a working width of 13.0 metres while the GF 17012 uses 16 rotors to give a working width of 17.2 metres. The machines require a PTO power output of 80 hp and 100 hp respectively and use two new design features to give higher rotor lift at headlands and improved contour-following on rough terrain. For improved headland clearance, the two outer sections on both machines are supported and held in place by self-reeling tension straps which enable all 12 or 16 rotors to be lifted in one motion. Not only do the straps reduce stress on the main chassis and individual rotor sections, they also ensure the entire machine remains stable across its full width, even when moving over rough or rutted terrain. The supporting straps also act as safety guards, replacing the traditional metal guards which added weight and could distort under load on previous machines. When folding the tedder into its road transport position, an auto-reel device – similar to those used to tension car seat belts – automatically winds the straps away. The rotors on both machines are raised hydraulically at headlands where a pair of transport wheels provides high ground clearance. This allows the tedder to travel over windrowed crops

without causing the cut grass to be dragged out of place or clumped into piles. The rotors on both models follow uneven terrain and surface changes as well as KUHN’s smaller eight and four rotor machines thanks to KUHN’s novel Ground Save Control (GSC) system. This system allows the rotor train to move independently of the carrying frame: when in use, the weight of the chassis is supported by the large transport wheels, while the small diameter rotors are suspended separately, enabling each rotor to follow the contours of the ground without scraping the soil. This not only prevents the crop from being contaminated by dirt but also reduces tine tip wear. Rotor height is easily adjusted via a single, handoperated lever located on the 3-point top link, while individual rotor pitch angle can also be adjusted easily and quickly and without the need for tools. Despite their wide working widths, the updated tedders function as well in small paddocks as they do in large fields thanks to exceptional manoeuvrability. A hydraulically controlled curtain deflector which prevents discharge losses at field edges and borders is also available as an option. Both tedders use KUHN’s case-hardened, forged steel DIGIDRIVE system for reduced maintenance. This unique drive system is maintenance-free and allows the tedders to fold to a very compact transport size: the GF 13012 folds to 2.4m wide by 6.5m long and 2.68m high, while the GF 17012 folds away to 2.4m wide by 7.5m long and 2.68m high (a transport size smaller than many rival 10m machines).

Prototype bio-methane tractor

methane powered tractor set to make energy independent farming

............................................................................................................................................................................................... Prototype bio-methane powered tractor set to make energy-independent farming a reality for British farmers New Holland brings prototype methanepowered tractor to the UK Methane-powered tractors emit 80% fewer pollutants and could achieve fuel cost savings of 25 – 40% Methane-powered tractors could offer energy independence for farms Wyke Farms (Somerset cheddar producers) and Worthy Farm (home to Glastonbury Festival ) test the new tractor this week A new prototype tractor that runs on biomethane produced by farm waste from 1000 dairy cows has been tested by British farmers this week. The tractor, developed by New Holland Agriculture has the potential to reduce polluting emissions by 80% and offer farmers significant savings in fuel costs. Wyke Farms – one of the UK’s biggest cheddar producers, and Worthy Farm – home to Glastonbury Festival, are both testing the tractor this week and are excited about the possibilities a methane-powered tractor presents. New Holland has developed the new tractor, which can run entirely on bio-methane derived from waste and produced by on-farm biogas (anaerobic digester) plants. It could reduce polluting emissions by 80% and offer fuel cost savings of between 25 and 40%. Wyke Farms in Bruton, Somerset has been producing cheddar cheese and other dairy products for over 150 years and is passionate about its ‘100% Green’ initiative which has recently earned it a handful of awards. While some farmers may dream of being energy independent, Wyke Farms has achieved it. The farm’s biogas plant plays a big part in meeting its sustainability objectives, with three large anaerobic digesters producing electricity for the farm and factory. The resulting gas is cleaned up and used to power the farm’s boilers, with excess sold back to the grid to serve the local

community. The digesters are fed entirely from waste; including slurry from the farm’s 1000 dairy cows, local cider apple waste, and other waste not fit for human or animal consumption. The farm runs three electric cars and in the future could run its tankers on compressed natural gas (CNG) produced by the biogas plant. Having a compression plant on-site would also give Wyke Farms the opportunity to invest in tractors powered by methane – giving them complete energy independence on the farm. The natural gas (methane) powered tractor has been developed by New Holland as a 100% sustainable solution to the increasing cost of fuel. Not only that, but as the number of on-farm biogas plants in the UK increases, there could be an ample supply of fuel on the doorstep. New Holland’s methane tractor borrows from commercial vehicle technology already used by its sister brand, Iveco. The use of compressed natural gas in vans, trucks and buses is well developed and limited only by storage capacity on the vehicle. The company has managed to squeeze 300L (52kg) of compressed methane into nine tanks around the tractor; enough for around six hours of work depending on the type of activity. Refuelling is quick, taking around the same time to fill as with diesel. Roger Clothier, Wyke Farms’ Farm Director who is testing the prototype tractor said: “On first impression it looks and feels just like a normal tractor when you jump in the cab. It easily managed to tow a full slurry tanker up and down the hills here – with a combined tractor and tanker weight of 27 tonnes. “We need fuel efficient vehicles with a good power to weight ratio to pull heavy tanks around the farm – the tractor has the power to do it and if we’re able to compress our gas on-site it looks like it could save us money. “In the future, sharing of gas power between local farms could be a possibility, particularly where you have a big plant like ours.

Landini steps up power

With an extended choice of mid-range tractors

...............................................................................................................................................................................................

Landini steps on the power with extended choice of mid-range tractors The Landini 6C Series which replaced the popular Powermondial in 2015 now comprises three models with the addition of a more powerful version with up to 140hp on tap. Like the 111hp and 121hp models, the new Landini 6-140C gets extra power when travelling on the road or operating a ptodriven field implement like a muck spreader or power cultivator. Then, the 6-120C’s 111hp output goes to 121hp; the 6-130C’s climbs from 121hp to 133hp; and the 6-140C is elevated from 130hp to 140hp – a strong output for a tractor of this size. To make best use of the performance potential and suit different applications, all three models can have four-speed pto – that’s with ‘power’ and ‘economy’ settings for both 540rpm and 1000rpm – and two levels of specification. Base models have 66-litre/min open centre gear pump hydraulics with an extra 30-litres/ min for the steering; 34in rear tyres; and a 40kph T-Tronic 36x12 transmission with three-step powershift operated by a thumb switch on the gear lever. A power shuttle with adjustable response is standard, giving fingertip control of forward and reverse selection. Choosing the higher-spec ‘LS’ version brings a more sophisticated 110-litre/min closed centre hydraulics system that pumps only

on demand; taller 38in tyres for added grip and floatation; and a choice of 40kph Eco or 50kph transmissions that get the tractor to its destination fast using less fuel. The higher-spec version can also be equipped with hydraulic independent wishbone front axle suspension for the ultimate in ride and traction, along with mechanical cab suspension, which is also an option on the base version. The Master Class cab itself has a fresh interior design with well laid out controls and quality materials, a completely flat floor making it easy to get in and out, and an instrument panel that moves with the steering wheel when this is adjusted for angle and reach. Outside, 14 powerful halogen lamps illuminate the tractor’s surroundings for safe and secure operation out in the field or in and around buildings.

Pink dumper raises funds

Hire company orders pink dumper to raise funds for cancer charity

............................................................................................................................................................................................... By Chris McCullough An agricultural and construction machinery hire company based in Derbyshire has just taken delivery of a rather unique pink dump trailer to help raise funds for a cancer charity. Direct Plant Hire based in Chapel-en-le-Frith in Derbyshire needed another dump trailer for their business and decided on a pink one to raise funds for Breast Cancer Awareness. Owner of the company, Joshua Smith, said he wanted something ‘a little bit different’ when ordering the trailer and therefore opted for a pink one. Mr Smith said: “A pink dump trailer is not something you see every day, so we decided on that colour for two reasons. “One, it will help raise awareness of our company and hopefully increase business, but also we aim to raise £5,000 for Breast Cancer Awareness by donating a percentage of the revenue it generates. “Some people have also pledged donations for the worthy cause as well. “We operate a plant hire business for the construction and agricultural industries and were looking for something different.

16 | July 2016 | AgriNews

“After much thought we decided on an 18 tonne dump trailer manufactured by Broughan Engineering in County Carlow in Ireland. “We placed the order with their distributor, Cheshire Farm Machinery, and received the trailer during the Royal Cheshire Show. It’s a well-made trailer and we are really delighted with it,” he added. Andrew Dutton from Cheshire Farm Machinery said: “We are the Broughan Engineering distributors for the north west of England and north Wales and sell around 20 of their trailers per year. “Broughan manufacturers top quality trailers and we are very pleased to have supplied this special one to Joshua Smith. “This particular trailer has a load capacity of 18 tonnes and weighs six tonnes unladen. It is made from six millimetre thick reinforced steel sides and a 10mm floor. “The trailer has full commercial running gear with air and oil brakes. It is fitted with Hi-speed 560/60 x 22.5 flotation tyres and a sprung drawbar as well. “A quality build is paramount from Broughan Engineering who are based in Tullow in County Carlow,” said Andrew.

EU impact on Farmers

European Commission discusses additional aid for dairy farmers

............................................................................................................................................................................................... By Chris McCullough Plans for another dairy aid package have been discussed in Luxembourg this week where a meeting of the Council of Agriculture Ministers asked for further help for farmers. EU Farm Commissioner Phil Hogan has previously said he had used all the available tools in the toolbox to fix the problematic dairy industry. However, Hogan announced the EU Commission is working on “a support package for the dairy sector with financial resources if necessary, which I expect to be in a position to present to the Council in July.” Members States indicated they are willing to trigger the Crisis Reserve if necessary but it is hope the aid can come from current EU funds. Lobby groups Copa & Cogeca warned EU Farm Ministers of the critical situation in EU agricultural markets and welcomed any form of support. Cogeca president Thomas Magnusson said: “The market situation at farm level is really not improving, being hit by a combination of factors including the economic downturn, high input costs and low prices as well as the Russian export ban. “Farmers are suffering from severe liquidity problems. The UK vote in favour of Brexit in the EU Referendum adds to the uncertainty. “It will be crucial to avoid any further disruptions to the market. We urge Ministers to

agree on a new package of measures to support the sector, using additional funds without affecting the crisis reserve. “New tools must be activated and new markets found using exports credits to give traders more certainty when they export.” Irish Farm Minister Michael Creed said: “I have asked the Commissioner to consider the deployment of a further targeted aid package, similar to that provided last September. “This gave considerable flexibility to Member States to adopt responses suited to their national circumstances, and I believe such a measure could play a further important role in 2016. “The key word here is flexibility and it would be important not to attach conditionality or complications to such targeted aid,” said Minister Creed. “I believe our focus must remain on providing real, practical and immediate assistance for farmers. In addition to intervention, I have called for the deployment of other measures that will provide real benefit for farmers in the short-term including the bringing forward of the delivery date for direct payments. “Last year Member States were also able to pay an advance of 70 per cent, and I have again asked the Commission to consider raising this percentage further in 2016.”

We urge Ministers to agree on a new package of measures to support the sector, using additional funds without affecting the crisis reserve.

Cream of the crop!

County Tyrone dairy farmers, cream of crop in Lakeland Dairies milk awards

By Chris McCullough

Two County Tyrone dairy farmers have scooped the top places in the coveted Lakeland Dairies Milk Quality Awards. Rex Wilson from Cookstown won the overall Lakeland Dairies Northern Ireland Milk Quality Award and the runners-up were fellow Tyrone farmers Albert and David McCrea from Newtownstewart. The Tyrone farmers were competing individually against 2,500 others who collectively supply over 1.1 billion litres of milk to Lakeland Dairies. The awards were presented by the Irish Minister for Regional Development and Rural Affairs, Heather Humphreys, together with Lakeland Dairies chairman Alo Duffy and chief executive, Michael Hanley. Dairy farmers from Cavan, Louth, Meath, Westmeath and Offaly also won awards. Lakeland Dairies chairman Alo Duffy said: “Lakeland Dairies is a market leading global provider of excellent dairy products and we have a very positive reputation developed over many years and decades. “We depend entirely on overall quality and

reliability across all of the products we supply to world markets. That process begins with our milk suppliers. “Producing the best quality milk requires immense commitment and hard work all year around. These winners show the very high standards that exist across our entire milk supply base and they are to be warmly congratulated.” Lakeland chief executive Michael Hanley said: “We market a wide range of dairy foodservice and food ingredient products worldwide. “With 230 different products, that is nearly 100 per cent of all milk sent to us that we export in the form of value added products. “The first building block in that process is the milk that we collect for processing and we’re fortunate to have very high quality milk suppliers across 15 counties on an allisland basis. The Milk Quality Award winners are exemplary of the very best traditions of excellence in dairy farming. “There is still volatility in world dairy markets and that is why we recently introduced a fixed milk price scheme to help to provide some certainty for our milk producers.

‘Mr JCB’ birth centenary

Bronze artwork honours ‘Mr JCB’ on the centenary of his birth

............................................................................................................................................................................................... The centenary of the birth of JCB’s Founder was today marked with the unveiling of a specially commissioned bronze bust. Joseph Cyril Bamford CBE was born on June 21st, 1916 at the family home, The Parks, Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, the son of Cyril and Dolores Bamford. As a youngster playtime was spent building cars and boats – early signs of an inventive flair which would see him become one of Britain’s most celebrated engineers. When Mr Bamford retired in 1975 and handed over to his son Anthony, the company he founded in a lock-up garage in Uttoxeter in October 1945 was turning over more than £43 million a year and employing hundreds of people. He had also become universally known as ‘Mr JCB’ as well as ‘Jamais Content’ Bamford, thanks to his unwavering drive to do things better. Today his sons Lord Bamford

and Mark Bamford and his grandson Jo Bamford marked the centenary of his birth and his many achievements by unveiling the one and a quarter scale bronze bust at JCB’s World HQ in Rocester. It is the work of another innovative son of Staffordshire, Stoke-on-Trent-born sculptor Andrew Edwards, 52, who has spent five months creating the image of Mr Bamford in his 1960s heyday when JCB was establishing itself on the world stage. Lord Bamford said: “My father was without doubt an engineering genius and we wanted to mark the centenary of his birth and the huge contribution he made to Staffordshire and to Great Britain. We are delighted with the bust and it’s very fitting that it has been created in the county of his birth and by a sculptor whose talent was developed right here in Staffordshire.” The bust will now be on

permanent display at JCB’s World HQ and will be seen by the thousands of visitors who pass through the company’s doors every year. Andrew Edwards said: “I am always extremely nervous when I undertake projects of this nature because they are so very personal to the family members involved. By working closely with the Bamford family I believe we’ve created a wonderful likeness of someone who is undoubtedly one of Staffordshire’s most famous sons. It has been an honour to have undertaken this work.” The bust weighs around 50kgs and stands around 700mm high. It’s not the first bust of Mr JCB to be commissioned; a smaller one was cast in 1964 and presented to him by employees in gratitude of a £250,000 bonus he shared with the workforce after a record year. That work of art sits on Mr JCB’s original desk in the Story of JCB permanent exhibition at the World HQ.

NSTS explains..

the importance of sprayer testing

............................................................................................................................................................................................... Everyone will agree that accurate application of pesticides is not only desirable but essential whether for the environmental, the consumer or the grower point of view. Accurate and targeted use of pesticides is all part of modern agriculture. That’s why back in the mid 90’s Agricultural Engineers Association (AEA) devised a test for application machinery to make sure it was working as intended and with a qualified operator would apply pesticides accurately and on target. In the early years of 2000 this test became the National Sprayer Testing Scheme as one of the main pillars of the Voluntary Initiative and is in 2016 testing some 16,500 pieces of application equipment annually. Now NSTS is an accepted part of arable agriculture and requirement of the major crop assurance schemes and supermarket protocols, requiring that farmers and growers have their sprayers inspected

annually. Testing pesticide application equipment is about to become even more important as the Sustainable Use Directive requires that all pesticide application equipment is tested by 26th November 2016. All pesticide application equipment applies not only to sprayers but also includes slug pellet and granular applicators. The NSTS is available through a network of test centres who have qualified examiners available to inspect and confirm the equipment is of the standard required. The test is usually carried out at the owner’s premises at a mutually agreed convenient time. The examiner will charge for the inspection, NSTS have no input into the cost of individual tests; the cost being commercial at the point of use. Additionally machine owners are free to choose their nearest or preferred test centre a list of test centres can be found on the NSTS website www.nsts.org.uk

Polaris news

Polaris rangers go to the world championships

............................................................................................................................................................................................... E.J. Churchill, based on the West Wycombe Estate, has been chosen once again to host the greatest event in the clay shooting calendar, the CPSA World English Sporting Championship between the 20th and 26th June 2016. Helping them to maintain the shooting ground’s reputation for an exceptionally well-kept and run facility are two powerful Polaris Ranger Diesel side by side machines. Polaris is also providing four more Ranger Diesel Crew six-seaters and two Ranger 570 side by sides for the event, delivered and supported on their behalf by authorised Polaris dealer All-4 Ltd. The festival of shooting, staged in the 5,000 acre estate

and an area of outstanding natural beauty, includes the CPSA World English Sporting, World Sportrap, Prelim English Sporting, FITASC Sporting and a range of exciting supporting events. With such a large area at their disposal E.J. Churchill is able to offer the CPSA World English Sporting the facilities to create entirely different layouts to give shooters a brand new challenge. The E.J. Churchill Polaris Ranger UTVs, used extensively in the shooting grounds and estate, join the additional Polaris vehicles in the logistical challenge of moving the large numbers of shooters and supporters around the grounds. They also shuttle the distribution of over a

quarter million clays among the shooters. Preferred for their power, economy and off-road abilities, the Polaris Rangers have been praised by E.J. Churchill for their reliability and ability to cope with heavy loads, covering rough, wet terrain and forestry areas with ease. When they are finished servicing the shooting championship E.J. Churchill’s own machines return to duty in grounds maintenance and transporting people around the shooting areas and across to Booker Airfield for helicopter rides on hospitality days. www. polaris-britain.com Tel: 0800 915 6720

Great Yorkshire Show 2016

Insight into Country Life at the 2016 Great Yorkshire Show

...............................................................................................................................................................................................

An insight into the management of a grouse moor will be among the attractions for visitors to the Country Pursuits area at the Great Yorkshire Show. Organised by the Countryside Alliance and National Gamekeepers Organisation, A Year in the Life of a Grouse Moor is a new addition to the daily arena programme and will be presented by John Cavana, of Patanavac Gundogs from near York. It will explain the management processes, flora and fauna and individuals involved in the upkeep of these unique habitats, how important they are to remote rural economies, and how their careful management benefits a host of other bird species, including curlew, lapwing, golden plover, merlin and ring ouzel. The programme will look at the life of grouse, from nesting to preparation for cooking and will be shown twice daily at 11.30am and 4.30pm and will include a

Wharfedale Tractors

simulated shoot. The Great Yorkshire Show is England’s premier agricultural event and runs from Tuesday 12 – Thursday 14 July and is expected to attract more than 130,000 visitors. Country Pursuits Area Chief Steward Angela Vaux said: “Informing people who might not come into frequent contact with some activities in the countryside has always been a very important part of what we do and this is a great example of how these activities can benefit a host of wildlife as well as providing information on where some of our food comes from.” Information is also the driver behind another part of the programme with “Beware the Tick Bite” in conjunction with the British Deer Society which will look at the threat of Lyme Disease which can cause serious symptoms in both humans and animals, how to avoid being bitten and what to do if a bite is suspected. Dogs will also play a major part in events, with displays from the Catterick

Beagles and Northern Counties Mink Hounds, gundog demonstrations from Mountgrace Gundogs and greyhounds and whippets presented by Arron Atmore. As well as grouse, other game birds are on the agenda with the return of Cornish countryman Chris Green with his look at Wildfowlers Past and Present as well as a Scientific Approach to Decoying Woodpigeons. Fishing is catered for by the Salmon and Trout Association, with twice-daily flycasting demonstrations by the founder of Yorkshire Flycasting, Brian Towers. Pest control will be covered with displays from Simon Whitehead of Pakefield Ferrets, not only looking at the control of rabbits, but also, with the help of legendary chef Rosemary Shrager in the Game Cookery Theatre, how the end result can be turned into delicious dishes. All activities take place in the Country Pursuits area of the showground which features two ponds in a natural amphitheatre that enables excellent viewing.

RSABI

Campaign aims to raise £150,000

...............................................................................................................................................................................................

Scotland’s unique charity RSABI is encouraging the rural industry to back its Help us help them campaign and raise £150,000 by spring 2017 to help put a stop to rural poverty. Last year, RSABI helped over 900 people, contributing around £600,000 in direct financial support, and the charity is now dipping in to its invested capital in response to the difficult times being experienced. RSABI helped 688 people during the previous year. Farmers and crofters have been particularly hard hit. Low commodity prices, uncertainty about subsidy payments and very poor weather conditions over the last year mean that the number of people receiving grant awards and support from RSABI is on the increase and set to continue. RSABI chief executive, Nina Clancy comments: “We are appealing to everyone in farming and crofting to back our Help us help them campaign. The current climate within farming isn’t great and we believe that the number of people receiving support or grants from us is only going to increase.” There are varied opportunities for people to back the current campaign. The Supporter Scheme is currently gathering momentum, providing the opportunity for people or organisations to join as individual, business or corporate members. Simply log on to www. rsabi.org.uk or call 033 111 4166 to sign up. Scotland rugby international Alex Dunbar is an ambassador for RSABI with his first act being to sign up as an individual supporter for £25 a year. He is urging people up and down the country to back the current campaign:

34 | July 2016 | AgriNews

“Times have been tough recently for farming and I would ask everyone who can, to do their bit to support RSABI and its important work helping the farming community.” Following a successful launch event at this year’s Royal Highland Show, RSABI’s flagship event for the rural industry, the Great Glen Challenge, sponsored by Ledingham Chalmers, solicitors once again puts teams through their paces in the Highlands. The event raised £62,000 last year, and donations can now be made at www.virginmoneygiving. com/fund/RSABIGGC16 for this year’s event, which takes place at the end of August. As part of the Help us help them campaign for 2016/17, RSABI are putting on a variety of other events for their supporters. A fundraising golf day at Edzell Golf Course earlier in June £4,600, and it is hoped that another golf event will equal its success at The Woll, Selkirk, next month. Other events include a charity clay shoot in the autumn, as well as a campaign dinner for the North East. The fundraising drive for Help us help them culminates with a Campaign Gala Dinner, sponsored by The Royal Bank of Scotland at Gogar, Edinburgh in the New Year. Paul Tinson, RSABI Development Manager, had the following to say about the campaign: “We are hugely grateful to all those who have come forward recently to join our Supporter Scheme, and we’ve got a number of great events coming up over the course of the summer and into next year as well. Please visit www.rsabi.org.uk to learn more and show your support for the current campaign - there has never been a more important time to help us help them.”

Time for water protection Slug Aware

...............................................................................................................................................................................................

The time for water protection is now: slug software enhances popular water stewardship app An enhanced version of Adama’s popular WaterAware app has been developed and is ready to launch for Autumn 2016. With 42 percent of the 486 drinking water protected areas in England at risk, the enhanced WaterAware application is essential in the coming months. The original WaterAware app was designed to help farmers, agronomists and sprayer operators prevent key active ingredients from entering and polluting raw water supplies and to avoid further regulatory restrictions. Having taken feedback from users, the new phase of the app, which is launching in July 2016, makes the existing functions easier to navigate, allowing users to save and store data according to either the products being used, or the fields being risk assessed. The latest phase also incorporates Adama’s new ‘#SlugAware’ feature which enables users to assess the risk of slug and snail activity on a field-by-field basis. The WaterAware app spatially assimilates soil type and soil moisture deficit information along with forecasted weather conditions and uses a traffic light system to advise farmers and sprayer operators when it is safe or unsafe to

make chemical or pellet applications. “The original WaterAware app has been a huge success and has proved to be an effective and reliable way for growers to identify the potential risk of active ingredients being washed into watercourses,” explains Ali Bosher, Marketing Director at Adama. “Our ongoing commitment to promoting the responsible use of agrochemicals meant we were keen to develop an updated version of the app with additional functions such as #SlugAware.” #SlugAware is designed to protect the longevity of metaldehyde-based slug pellets such as Gusto 3 by ensuring that pellets are only applied when absolutely necessary. By considering factors such as soil type, humidity, soil moisture, temperature, cultivation method, wind and current and previous crops, #SlugAware gives growers a low, medium or high threat of slug activity warning based on their land’s specific conditions in a given 24 to 72 hour period. “Whether it is metaldehyde from slug pellets or key weed control active ingredients such as metazachlor, more needs to be done to prevent these and other agrochemicals from entering fresh water supplies,” Ali continues.

“UK agriculture has already lost more than 70% of the active substances at its disposal since the early 1990s. Put simply, if we as an industry don’t do more to protect our natural water resources, regulatory pressures will result in farmers facing a future with even fewer active ingredients and significantly restricted weed and pest control options. “The improvements to WaterAware and the introduction of #SlugAware are aimed at giving growers better advice and helping them to make more informed crop protection decisions by ensuring key active ingredients are only ever applied at the right time.” The upgraded WaterAware app (which now includes the #SlugAware feature as standard) is FREE to download from Google Play for Android devices or the Apple Store for Apple devices. BASIS and NRoSO points available for using the app. For more information about WaterAware contact ukenquiries@adama.com

Words of wisdom

From Steve Birchall Poultry House Cleaning Services

............................................................................................................................................................................................... Industry developments and pressure from the supply chain are turning the spotlight on more efficient cleaning units as a way to increase performance while reducing antibiotics use. The packers and retailers are demanding less independance on the use of antibiotics to control disease so producers need to respond to this. To control disease and maintain production, the industry has to explore and adopt alternative ways to reduce the pathogen risk to birds. Better hygiene practices, based on more efficient cleaning of housing and equipment combined with strict biosecurity is an obvious starting point. It is entirely logical to get buildings as clean as possible before repopulating them to reduce the disease threat before the new birds arrive. New stock are under stress brought about by combination factors including transport, handling, vaccination and being exposed to new disease threats. The more hat can be done to reduce disease threats, the better. There is a real scope to improve the effectiveness of cleaning of all types of poultry housing but the starting point is a change of mind set. Too many producers regard cleaning as a “must do”, uninteresting and mundane chore, something that has to be done and the sooner it is done the better, however, nothing could be further from the truth. Cleaning should be seen as an integral part of a production system which can have a significant impact on performance, costs and profit. An efficient well planned and implemented cleaning procedure can reduce the disease threat to birds leading to better performance. It can also save time and reduce costs. An effective routine comprises of two different stages - cleaning and disinfection. Cleaning is essential to remove the environment in which pathogens thrive and to expose them to the subsiquent disinfectant. You can not disinfect dirt

unless soiling is removed, the pathogens will be protected from the disinfectant. The cleaning phase is crucial but this is not a case of taking an ardent approach with a high pressure power washer. While you can blast away some soiling, you will not remove the fats and proteins which make up much of the dirt on the walls and other surfaces. In addition, the use of high pressure creates an aerosol effect which can actually spread the pathogens and make them worse. To achieve an effective clean it is essential to apply a detergent and then to rinse away under low pressure followed by the application of disinfectant. Effective cleaning will help prevent the economic loss associated with outbreaks and is considerably cheaper than the cost of treating an outbreak with medicines. Using chemical detergents ensures that soiling is removed before disinfection resulting in a reduction in bacterial levels prior to restocking, giving the new birds the best possible start. Thorough cleaning based on a two stage routine could have a big impact on future profits and turn cleaning from a chore into a profit driver.

...............................................................................................................................................................................................

CIRENCESTER - Mitsubishi Motors in the UK has introduced a £2,500[1] finance deposit contribution and 0% APR representative[2] on the market-leading Outlander PHEV. The offer is available on cars registered between the 21st June to 28th September 2016[3]. Toby Marshall, Sales and Marketing Director of Mitsubishi Motors in the UK, said: “With its state-of-theart petrol-electric hybrid powertrain, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is at the forefront of a new generation

of ultra-low emissions vehicles that can save money for motorists and help to improve air quality.” A full sized 4x4 family crossover SUV, the Outlander PHEV offers exceptional fuel returns of up to 156mpg. Combining electric and petrol power it has a range of 541 miles - 32 miles in electric mode alone – which is more than enough to accommodate the average daily commute. The serial award-winning Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, which offers class-leading emissions of just 42g/km CO2,is exempt from London

congestion charges thus making the offer even more compelling for motorists and commuters that drive into London. In addition, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is also exempt from road tax and qualifies for the Government’s £2,500 plugin car grant. Meanwhile, company car drivers can reap the reward of 7% Benefit in Kind tax (BIK), meaning a virtual pay rise of several thousand pounds per year.

THE NEW MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER PHEV THE UK’S #1 SELLING PLUG-IN HYBRID With luxuriously smooth driving dynamics, the intelligent Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV decides when it’s more efficient to use petrol or electricity, giving it the ability to deliver a staggering 156mpg1. An electric range of up to 32 miles allows the Outlander PHEV to easily tackle the UK’s average daily drive on a single charge – and on longer journeys the petrol engine helps out to achieve a combined range of up to 541 miles2. The battery can be charged in just a few hours via a domestic plug socket3, a low-cost home Charge Point4 or one of over 8,500 Charge Points found across the UK. With ultra-low CO2 emissions the Outlander PHEV is exempt from Road Tax and the London Congestion Charge5 – as well as being eligible for drastically reduced Benefit in Kind taxation6. There’s even £2,500 off the list price through the Government Plug-in Car Grant, which means an Outlander PHEV will cost you from just £31,7497. We call this Intelligent Motion.
