ArmaTrac Toured The UK ArmaTrac has highly intrigued British press and agriculture world since its’ debut at LAMMA in January. Several distributor inquiries have dominated the air during what-turnedout-to-be a tour of UK for ArmaTrac as it has showed up at the UK’s other notable agriculture events like Cereals, Royal Highland and Livestock in the first half of the year. Robert Clarkson of Eastfield Agricultural Services in Lanarkshire has been the newest distributor member of growing ArmaTrac family that has spread upto 26 countries so far. “We looked at a few options and when I first saw ArmaTrac, at Agritechnica in Germany, I was very impressed” said Robert Clarkson, and he nailed his first sale only a couple of hours later than he was authoritised.

Direct sales approach makes Bauer slurry tankers more attractive for large-scale slurry and digestate spreading Bauer is re-launching its high-specification tankers in Britain by supplying contractors and large farm operators direct at more favourable prices but with service and parts support still available nationwide through Bauer dealers. “The market for large tankers with specialist application equipment is very competitive with a number of players involved,” says Adrian Tindall, Bauer UK & Ireland sales manager. “Dealing direct with the professional operators most likely to use our machines will enable us to ensure we provide the right features and specification for their needs, at prices competitive with other high-quality products.” Bauer tankers available in sizes from 10.5cu m to 24cu m – 10,500-litres to 24,000-litres – are unique in the UK and Ireland for having a hand-made polyester tank mounted on a galvanised steel chassis. The heart-shaped tank cross section results in a low centre of gravity for good stability in hilly fields and on the road, while indents provide ample space for wide and large diameter flotation tyres to minimise soil compaction. Using polyester rather than steel saves a significant amount of weight over a quality-spec steel tanker – as much as 3 tonnes with the 24cu m model. It also provides a container impervious to corrosion. “That is particularly relevant to farms and contractors involved in handling biogas plant digestate, which can be more corrosive than regular livestock slurry,” notes Adrian Tindall. “Together with

the corrosion-resistant galvanised chassis, it means these tankers clean up really well and can look like new even after a lot of use, which results in strong re-sale values.” The tankers are available with Bauer spiral or centrifugal high capacity pumps giving fast ﬁlling and spreading rates. A front-mounted ﬁlling arm is available for quick turnarounds at the slurry store and a cleaner working experience for the operator. Application options include a double nozzle spray boom for surface spreading up to 27m wide, and a dribble hose applicator in widths from 9m to 30m with a macerating distributor, hydraulic drip stop and hydraulic folding. A drag shoe applicator with working widths of 5.3m to 21m provides in-crop application of slurry or digestate directly on to the ground; a disc injector in 5.2m to 8m widths places liquid beneath the surface for minimum losses through evaporation and quick resumption of pasture grazing; and a spring tine cultivator injector is available for incorporating slurry or digestate into seedbeds. Chassis options include a cranked single axle for smaller tankers in the range to give an extra-low centre of gravity; rear-steer tandem axles with leaf spring or air suspension – the latter is standard on the triple axle 24cu m model – and four-point rear linkage for a mounted applicator. “With all those options, each tanker is specced and priced individually,” notes Adrian Tindall. “But an 18.5cu m tandem axle machine with 15m dribble bar will be about £70,000; and an auto loading system will add around £6000.”

New machinery makes its mark at Cereals 2015

Kubota’s new tractor range marks the firm’s launch into the mainstream agricultural market. Built at the company’s new manufacturing facility in northern France, the M7001 Series is Kubota’s most powerful tractor to date. Available in three models (M7131, M7151 and M7171, rated at 130, 150, 170 hp respectively), the series is aimed at mixed and arable farms and comes with a host of features to maximise performance, reliability and operator comfort and control. Case IH’s new Puma range incorporates seven models from 150-240hp. The six-cylinder power units meet European Stage IV (Tier 4 Final) emission regulations that minimise fuel consumption and maximise performance. In addition to an updated AFS 700 terminal, the new Puma models include HMC II Headland Management Control and can be specified with Case IH AccuGuide. The new Magnum Rowtrac 380 CVX from Case IH makes its Cereals debut. The tractor retains the front wheel configuration of the Magnum 380 on which it is based, but sports tracks instead of rear wheels. This, says Case, combines the manoeuvrability, handling and versatility of a wheeled tractor with the ability of a tracked machine to float over the ground. Power is supplied by an 8.7-litre FPT Cursor 9 engine, which is rated at 380hp but produces up to 435hp and 1806Nm of torque. Spearheading the John Deere range of mid-size tractors are the new six-cylinder 6175R, 6195R and 6215R large-frame models making their Cereals debut. The tractors feature Stage IV/Final Tier 4 engines feature enhanced manoeuvrability, improved operator comfort and extended service intervals. New Holland is showing its recently re-launched T8 range, with Tier 4B engines, which offer improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions. Power is increased across the range and torque curves have been improved, peaking at 1300-1500rpm and improving fuel efficiency. New Holland’s new LM Elite model telehandler features more engine power (143hp compared to 121hp) and improved transmission featuring a 6x3 Powershift. The machine is capable of speeds up to 40kph. Kuhn Farm Machinery’s new 6m minimum tillage drill is designed to maximise speed, accuracy and efficiency. The new Espro, which is being launched at Cereals, can be pulled by a 200 hp tractor and drill accurately at speeds up to 17km/h. Two rows of 460mm concave discs incorporate residues into the surface layers, creating a fine tilth and functioning effectively even in heavy conditions, says the firm. A row of 900mm diameter press wheels follow. The Crossflex seed bar has coulter arms mounted on polyurethane blocks that provide sufficient spring movement to maintain a precise seed depth at high working speeds. Double-disc coulters provide precision seed placement. Weaving is launching its new zero-till GD Drill, which features a patented GD coulter that provides low soil disturbance with a very low draught requirement of 40hp/m, according to the company. The double disc arrangement is mounted at 25° off the vertical. The larger leading outer disc cuts an opening slice in the soil while the smaller inner disc forms an opening for the seed to be placed. The following press wheel also acts as a depth regulator. Inter-row clearance of 1,000mm helps the drill operate in extremely trashy conditions, including cover crops. Mounted variants are available from 3 to 4.8m, while trailed models range from 4 to 8m. Explore renewable technologies at Cereals 2015

Cereals 2015 has attracted a wide range of renewable energy companies offering visitors a chance to explore new technologies that can provide cheaper energy and new income streams at a time when farming incomes are under severe pressure. More than 25 companies are exhibiting in the Renewables area, with several more in the business and environment areas of the site. Farmers and landowners can learn more about a fresh approach to carbon trading that could unlock extra income. AR Carbon aims to improve soil fertility naturally and in doing so increase the amount of carbon stored (sequestered) in that soil. This carbon can then be sold to big businesses wishing to offset their own emissions – with 100 hectares of land typically generating an extra income of around £4,000 a year. AR Carbon tests the soil and suggests ways soil quality can be improved naturally. In time, this will increase the amount of organic matter in the soil, which helps capture more carbon. Typically there will only be a 1% increase in organic matter over a 10-year period providing a return of £4,000 a year for every 100 hectares, says the company. Anaerobic digestion plant operators can increase biogas production by improving their silage clamps, research published by Cranfield University has shown. The study shows that using high quality covers with an underlay, achieving optimum chop length and using sloping wall clamps minimises losses and produces high quality silage. Clamp manufacturer Bock UK will explain more aboutthe research at Cereals. The information has been used to create a best practice document on achieving maximum methane yields. The company will be showing its double-layer Kombi2Plus silage sheet and Silofix belt, designed to provide an airtight seal in all conditions. Solar energy specialist Lightsource Renewable Energy says that despite recent changes to legislation there is still plenty of opportunity to invest in solar technology. Developers of solar farms larger than 5MWp, which is around 25 acres of land, now have to bid for funding through Contracts for Difference (CfD). This competitive auction divides renewable energy technologies into two pools – established and less established – with solar companies competing against the likes of onshore wind for the same budget. Of 27 projects approved in the first bidding process just five were solar farms. Lightsource won funding for a 14MWp project in Shropshire, showing that larger developments are still possible. Lightsource is also offering rural businesses the

chance to cut electricity bills with a new rooftop solar tariff of just 5p/Kwh for premises with a roof space greater than 400sq m. RenEnergy is focusing on harvesting the potential benefits by installing solar PV on otherwise unused land and spaces, advising on roof- or ground-mounted schemes. The company is launching its latest Solar PV innovation, RenPark, a solar car port designed and built in partnership with Hi-Span. The system is based on the firm’s Ground Mount frames, offering a revenue-generating solution for car parking and electric vehicle charging. Energy Innovations is showing the newest addition to its product range, Weiss boilers. These over-650kW fully automatic biomass boilers burn wood chip, wood pellet and a range of other wetter fuels efficiently. Weiss offers biomass boilers for systems providing water and steam heat for CHP and process heat. Energy Innovations currently uses their Multicrat series (650kW-2MW) but can supply biomass boilers from the full range. Qila Energy is building sub-250 kW AD plants for arable and dairy farmers that it claims can handle a far greater volume and range of feedstocks than other AD plants, including up to 80% straw-based manures. Typical diets for a Qila small-scale AD plant are farmyard manures, slurries and grass silage and overall retention time is just one month. A small-scale digester provides valuable income and organic fertiliser, while heat from the CHP engine can benefit from the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). The company provides 100% finance for its AD plants and can arrange planning permission and grid connection as well as training and support once the plant has been commissioned. Farmers who successfully opt for full funding receive market rates for the feed material, an operator’s fee and ground rent. Experts from Hallmark Power are offering advice on the suitability of renewable options – wind turbines, solar panels or anaerobic digesters – for farm businesses. A wide range of information is available, from choosing a suitable site and planning permission through to financing options and generating income. Information on renting land to Hallmark Power for turbine installations is also available. Biomass and renewable energy specialists, Eco2 Ltd, is seeking new growers and suppliers of straw, miscanthus and wood chip for its power stations. Its 38.5MW Sleaford Renewable Energy Plant in Lincolnshire started commercial operation in September 2014, and generates enough electricity to power 65,000 homes. The plant requires approximately 240,000t of fuel per year.

When the end of swath is reached, NextSwath automatically computes and determines the best possible swath for turning the tractor, and then proceeds, completely automatically, to select the best possible swath to follow next. In practice, this automatic turning process delivers many beneﬁts. It relieves the driver of a substantial workload. When using towed

implements, especially ones with large operating widths, it prevents the vehicle from undershooting or overshooting swaths during headland turns. This eliminates any overlooked or overlapping areas in the next swath. This optimum route calculation during headland turns – NextSwath typically selects the shortest route to the next swath – boosts machine efﬁciency and hectare-based performance, while at the same time saving fuel. The system can also be used to great effect with crops planted in rows, or for herbicide spraying applications. Other beneﬁts include soil protection; as the headland area is always driven over in a uniform manner, surface compression is prevented, and on pasture land, young grass shoots are protected. Suzuki KingQuad Winner! Great timing for Suzuki KingQuad 500 winner!

Agricultural shows are important dates in the calendar for farmers looking for technical advice and new products. But of course, there’s often time at these events for a breather and a bit of fun – like entering prize competitions. So when farmer David Hunt made his annual trip to the Cereals Event in Cambridgeshire last year and saw that assurance scheme, Red Tractor, were running a competition at their trade stand, he decided to try his luck. The fact that the competition prize donated by Suzuki was for a brand new KingQuad ATV struck a particular chord. Generations of David’s family have farmed their mixed 1200-acre site near Woburn in Bedfordshire since 1924. The farm grows wheat, barley and oilseed rape and has around 2,500 sheep. So when, just one month before David entered the competition, the farm’s old ATV had been put permanently out of action, the timing could not have been worse. The farm relies on using an ATV all the year round and one of the busiest times of the year was now approaching – lambing season, with nearly 4,000 lambs on the way. However, good fortune was about to smile on David as his was the prize-winning name picked at random from hundreds of competition entrants. We asked him to tell us about what the win meant for the farm. Is having an ATV important for your work? An ATV is an absolutely vital piece of equipment for our farm. A lot of us depend on it to get us around quickly, especially when we have so many lambs to look after once lambing has ﬁnished. We use it all the time to check on them, as well as for rounding up and for worming and shearing. Plus, an ATV makes catching the odd sheep which may need help or treatment much easier as we can ﬁt a small trailer on the back. It’s also essential for our work with the crops, such as slug pelleting, spraying margins and footpaths, moving scarecrows on oilseed rape, and keeping a careful eye on the growing crops. In fact, we use it so much that we had to hire an ATV when we lost the old one.

How did you ﬁnd out that you had won the Suzuki ATV?

Our farm is a member of the Red Tractor scheme, so I just ﬁlled out a competition entry form while I was visiting their trade stand at the show and

promptly forgot all about it. Then I got a phone call when I was out working in the ﬁelds to say that my name had been pulled from the hat as the winner! Obviously any farmer would love to win this prize, but you never expect to win these things, so I was amazed.

What was the ﬁrst thing you did?

We found the Suzuki to be vastly superior to the old make of ATV we had been using on the farm. So having won a manual version for free, we decided to we could afford to treat ourselves and upgraded it to the KingQuad 500XP with powersteering.

What are some of the best features of the 500?

The great thing about the 500 is the extra power it gives us, plus the electric power-steering makes it really light and easy to manoeuvre around the farm. It’s the ideal tool for any job as it’s so versatile. It feels incredibly stable and gives you an extremely smooth ride. It’s so comfortable too, whether you’re riding it for a long time or over rough terrain. Another key beneﬁt for us is that the low ground pressure tyres don’t make any marks on the land. It just goes to show that you should enter these competitions as you never know…!
