P&D Eng celebrates 40 years supporting Farmers and contractors
............................................................................................................................................................................................... Agricultural engineering firm celebrates 40 years supporting farmers and contractors Agricultural engineering firm P & D Engineering started celebrating its 40th anniversary with a colourful presence at the Royal Three Counties Show and progress towards completion of an expanded parts department and workshop. The Bredon, Glos-based company, which supplies essential machinery, parts and services to farmers, contractors and other rural enterprises in Gloucestershire and neighbouring counties, has its roots in a partnership set up in 1976 – 40 years ago. Today, the business employs 10 service, parts and administration staff at its Fleet Road premises. Managing director Mike Pullin recalls when he first started out travelling from farm to farm in a former Whitbread brewery van to service and repair tractors and machinery. Now, the business has five service technicians in the workshops and on the road with four service vans using the latest electronic software and diagnostic tools as well as traditional equipment to keep modern high-tech machines running as they should. “Things have certainly changed a lot over the 40 years – at one time, all you needed were practical skills, knowledge of machinery and a good set of spanners,” says Mike. “But now, advanced electronics feature on everything from bale wrappers to combines and you have to be able to work with them. That’s why in addition to bringing on an apprentice most years we make time for our technicians to attend manufacturers’ training courses.”
Mike took the business forward alone under the P&D Engineering name four years after it was established as a partnership. He rented a barn less than a mile from the current premises and bought the plot of land on Fleet Lane in 1989 to provide better workshop facilities and build up a machinery parts stock to supply local farmers. Having traded used tractors and equipment, P&D Engineering was awarded its first new product franchise by Italian tractor maker SAME. Other manufacturers then took notice, with Merlo telescopic handlers becoming another major line in 2006. In 2007, Mike switched to McCormick for his tractor franchise. “Taking on McCormick gave the business further credibility, which led to other major brand names coming our way,” says Mike. “Over the past two years or so, the range has been completely revamped and upgraded with new tractors that have more features, greater performance, lower running costs and better cabs.” McCormick area sales manager Steve Cann says P&D Engineering’s knowledgeable sales and service staff attract customers who want to be sure of buying the right equipment and that it will be properly supported. The parts department holds stocks for both modern and classic tractors. “Reliable and quick-response service back-up is crucial to farmers and contractors because they rely on dealers to keep their tractors and machinery working,” he points out. “Mike Pullin and his team have an excellent reputation as far as service is concerned and it’s good to
see the company investing in expanded parts and workshop facilities to help maintain that reputation.” Complementing the farm tractors and telehandlers are sales and service franchises for major names such as Vicon grassland and cropcare machinery, Ritchie livestock handling and feeding equipment, Kioti UTVs and compact tractors, and Logic ATV implements. Browns, Conor, Twose/ McConnel, BvL, Harry West and Kidd are other key names with equipment for the livestock sector, along with Albutt and Cherry attachments and Schaeffer loaders, while KRM Agrisem and Ovlac tillage equipment provide crop establishment options for arable and mixed enterprise farmers. “Life has got busier for our sales, service and parts teams as we’ve built up the business by adding new product lines,” notes Mike, whose wife Penny heads the office administration staff. “We couldn’t do any of this without their skills and willingness to get the job done; Penny and I are very grateful for the hard work they all put in.” Mike also has a word of thanks for his customers for their faith in the P&D Engineering team and the services they provide. “We’re always striving to do better, of course, and the expanded workshop and parts department should help us do that when they’re completed,” he says. “I think we can justifiably look back with pride on the business we’ve created – and look ahead with excitement and optimism to what the next 40 years will bring!”

Kverneland News
New dealer appointed Extended plough range with PN/RN 100
............................................................................................................................................................................................... Kverneland is pleased to announce the appointment of Henry Armer & Son as a new dealer for its complete range of equipment, including grass, cultivation, seeding, feeding and precision farming equipment. Operating from two depots in south Cumbria - one at Leece, Ulverston and the other in Main Street, Greenodd - Henry Armer & Son is recognised as a leading family-run agricultural engineering and groundscare specialist in the area. The dealership recently celebrated 100 years of trading, and has also invested heavily in a new depot at Greenodd to better serve new and existing customers in the area. Joe Bell, Kverneland Group UK managing director said the announcement gives the Kverneland brand extensive coverage throughout the south Cumbria region from a highly professional team backed up by efficient service and support from its two depots. Harry Armer, partner in the family-run business said the dealership was delighted to be working with such a prestigious machinery brand, offering an extensive range of high quality implements suited to all aspects of agriculture.
Kverneland Group UK has taken the wraps off an allnew semi-mounted plough series called the PN/RN 100, available in eight- and ninefurrow builds. Its No28 bodies are protected by shearbolt on RN 100 models, and autoreset mechanism on PN 100 versions. The latter uses Kverneland’s proven multi-leaf spring design that affords non-stop ploughing. Filling a gap in the range between the fully-mounted EO/LO seven-furrow and the flagship semi-mounted PW/RW from seven to 12 furrows, the new plough delivers the convenience of a small plough in a highoutput package. Available with manual vari-width from 14-20in, and using a single-wheel format, the PN/RN 100 offers in-furrow and onland capability - the latter with enough offset to suit wheeled and tracked tractors up to 3.4m in width. “This new plough has been developed for customers with 200-400hp tractors on wheels or tracks, who frequently swap between ploughing and cultivating,” explains Kverneland Group UK plough specialist Adam Burt. “Those customers want to change implements quickly and easily, so it is more important to them to have a
high-output plough that is mechanically simple to setup and use,” he says. “Those customers also want the flexibility to use the plough on more than one tractor, and not be tied to one specific tractor for all the farm’s ploughing. The PN/ RN 100 is that plough.” “All it needs is three double-acting spool valves to operate,” he says. “Couple up, adjust the offset and front furrow, and away you go. It is that simple.” Kverneland Group UK Ltd, Walkers Lane, Lea Green, St Helens WA9 4AF – Web: uk.kverneland.com Of heavy-duty construction, the PN/RN 100 uses a 200x200mm main beam, and comes with a generous 80cm of underbeam clearance and 100cm of inter-body clearance. Headstock options include Cat III and Cat IV fittings, and wheel options extend to a 400/55 R22.5 or a wider section 500/55 R22.5 tyre. Prices start from £31,953 for the RN 100 shear bolt version, while the PN 100 auto-reset model is priced from £35,496. Both versions will be available from August.

County Armagh contractor..
gets first John Deere forager
............................................................................................................................................................................................... A silage contractor in County Armagh has taken delivery of the very first John Deere 8800i selfpropelled forage harvester to be sold in the UK and Ireland. Garth Cairns from Waringstown, who also runs the slurry machinery and trailer manufacturing company SlurryKat, received his top of the range forager in mid-April from local John Deere dealership Johnston Gilpin & Co Ltd, based in Lisburn. Mr Cairns runs a large contracting fleet of 13 John Deere tractors and two John Deere selfpropelled foragers. He ordered the new 8800i back in October 2015 in good time for this year’s silage season. The new forager replaced his 2010 model 7750, which was traded in showing 1850 hours on the clock. “We changed our 7750 as it was six years old and we were keen to upgrade to the latest technology from John Deere,” said Garth Cairns. “Farmers are under intense financial pressure, as are contractors, but there is no way we could increase our prices to help increase our own cashflow. With that in mind the only solution was to reduce our costs and by upgrading to this very latest 8800i we hope to achieve that. “The new forager is actually six inches narrower and higher than our previous model, making access to fields a bit easier. Other improvements that pushed us towards the 8800i were its higher capacity, the variable speed pick-up which runs independently of the feed rollers, and of course the bigger engine.
12 | June 2016 | AgriNews
“The 8800i is powered by a Cummins 19-litre 845hp engine, which does not require AdBlue to produce low emissions. The cab on the forager is also much more spacious and with that, visibility has been improved. Another efficiency improvement on this machine is the new knife sharpening system, which now only takes around two minutes compared to 10 or so on the older model. “To be honest, we did look at other brands before making this purchase, but in the end we came back to John Deere because of the backup service we receive from our dealer Johnston Gilpin. That service is critical to an agricultural contractor and has a vital influence in the overall buying decision,” said Garth Cairns. Johnston Gilpin’s managing director Randal McConnell and sales director Robbie Hewitt were present when the new John Deere 8800i selfpropelled forager was delivered to Mr Cairns. Randal McConnell added: “We are very pleased to have sold and delivered the first John Deere 8800i in the UK and Ireland to Garth Cairns, who is a very loyal customer and a good example of a progressive thinking one. He made the buying decision early on and ordered the machine last autumn, which gave both the factory and us plenty of time to manufacture and deliver it ahead of this year’s silage season.” Indeed, Johnston Gilpin has since sold a second John Deere 8800i to another Northern Ireland silage contractor, in the Ballynahinch area
Trip to Kuhn headquarters won NFYFC dream machine designers win trip to Kuhn headquarters
............................................................................................................................................................................................... KUHN Farm Machinery has announced the winners of its Dream Machine competition, with four Young Farmers from Essex, County Durham, Devon and North Yorkshire winning a trip to the company’s global headquarters and manufacturing plant in France. Held in association with the National Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs (NFYFC), the Dream Machine competition was designed to encourage young farmers to design an innovative and imaginative new piece of farm machinery that would benefit modern farming systems. The four winners were announced on 7th May at the AGRI (Agriculture and Rural Issues) Forum as part of the NFYFC’s Annual Convention 2016 in Blackpool. They will be taken on an expenses-paid trip to KUHN’s French headquarters and manufacturing site at Saverne near Strasbourg during October, where the winners will have the opportunity to present their ‘Dream Machine’ concepts to the company’s head designers. Ben Robinson of Great Smeaton YFC in North Yorkshire won the Junior (under 16) category with his design for a trailed disc and tine cultivator for use on stony land. Ben’s design emphasis was to reduce cultivation costs by negating the need to power harrow. His machine is designed with two rows of sub-soiling tines, the second of which targets soil compaction caused by tractor wheels. Ben’s design also incorporates a final set of hydraulically operated press wheels which can double-up as transportation wheels. In the Intermediate (under 21) class, Benjamin Sell from
Brentwood YFC in Essex designed a bale spike capable of safely and securely loading or unloading between one and four mini Hesston bales. Having struggled to unload several hundred bales during last year’s harvest with an inadequate bale spike, Ben designed the new machine to make the loading and unloading process more efficient. Ben’s machine features two lower rows of tine spikes, plus a third, hydraulically operated upper pair of tines which grab and secure a third row of bales. Ben intends to build his first prototype – which features an anti-topple frame for when the grab isn’t in use – ahead of this year’s harvest and hopes that his design will go on to help other livestock farmers and bale contractors. In the Senior (under 26) class, Caroline Baker of Stockton YFC in County Durham designed a bale wrapper with an automatic film loading system. As a newly trained tractor driver, the weight of replacement film tubes prevented Caroline from operating a conventional bale wrapper. Her design solves this problem by using a revolving film storage conveyor with springloaded film holders to make films easy to load. An automated tube replacement system negates the need to load the film tubes into the wrapper by hand, with empty cartridges being automatically discharged and replaced by a full tube from the storage conveyor. In the Associate (27 years and over) category, Daniel Webber from Withleigh YFC in Devon designed a ‘Rapid Wrap’ baler and wrapper combination. Daniel’s machine combines a conventional large square baler with an adapted version of
KUHN’s SW 4004 bale wrapper to produce one machine which bales and wraps in one. Daniel’s design is aimed at farmers and contractors looking to reduce the costs and time entailed in producing square bale haylage and silage, with an emphasis on maintaining bale quality and shape as part of a non-stop baling and wrapping process. Sian Pritchard, Managing Director of KUHN Farm Machinery (UK), said: “We have been very impressed by the amount of thought and reasoning that went into the winning entries and look forward to welcoming all four winners to our factory in Saverne. All four of the winning Dream Machines show some excellent design features, and it is clear that the winners have a real understanding of the mechanical needs of modern farming systems.” Sam Dilcock, Chairman of the AGRI steering group, expressed the NFYFC’s appreciation for KUHN’s sponsorship of the competition. “On behalf of the NFYFC and AGRI Forum, I’d like to thank KUHN for their kind sponsorship. The competition is a great example of the way the NFYFC works to provide young farmers with opportunities to learn more about the agricultural industry and for members to share their ideas for the future with industry leaders who can bring their ideas to life. The trip to Saverne is a fantastic opportunity for the four winners to learn more about the design and manufacturing processes involved in getting a piece of farm machinery from a design concept to a working piece of equipment.”

Italy-Africa conference
President of New Holland Agriculture at the first Italy-Africa ministerial conference
............................................................................................................................................................................................... Carlo Lambro, Brand President of New Holland Agriculture, participated as a speaker, upon invitation of the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paolo Gentiloni, in the first Italy-Africa ministerial conference that was held at the Farnesina in Rome, which was attended by the Ministers of 14 African countries as well as diplomatic representatives and representatives of international organisations. In his speech, Mr. Lambro, who is a member of the Group Executive Council of CNH Industrial, first pointed out CNH Industrial's commitment to promote both economic development and environmental sustainability on a global level as well as the circular economy, which is a new industrial model that focuses on the reduction of energy consumption, the increased use of renewable sources, the responsible management of natural resources, the reduction in the production of scrap, waste and emissions and the extension of the useful life of products and components. Mr. Lambro explained what New Holland has done in favour of sustainability in agriculture, with particular reference to the Clean Energy Leader strategy, which is celebrating 10 years of activities and successes in the promotion of renewable fuel, emission reduction systems as well as sustainable and precision farming. The Brand President then
provided some important data regarding the brand in Africa. As the number one Brand among all western producers, New Holland operates in 34 African countries, with 24 distributors and 265 sales outlets. Thanks to its widespread presence, New Holland delivers approx. 5,000 tractors every year, with a relevant market share on a continental level. Faithful to its tradition as a specialist, New Holland produces and distributes customised tractors and agricultural equipment for multiple African farms, making them able to resist the often very extreme climatic conditions. Simple and intuitive to use, they are efficient from a consumption point of view and produce lowlevels of pollution yet achieve high levels of productivity. This equipment makes it possible to create a targeted agricultural mechanisation, which defends the cultivated soil, increases the yield, makes best use of the available resources and drastically decreases waste. For the development of its products, New Holland has invested more than 50 million dollars over the past 3 years, which made it possible to implement, for example, the new TT4 tractor. This robust and extremely versatile machine, which is simple to use and very reliable, includes many features designed to increase productivity, with a low operating cost and a very convenient price. Mr. Lambro recalled how one
of the strengths of the Brand in Africa is the continuous training of people, and mentioned a series of projects that are in progress in Kenya, Uganda, Algeria, Morocco, Sudan and South Africa, relative to training for personnel at the dealers and for the operators of the agricultural equipment, as well as the creation of local assembly centres. 46 tractors at work every 100 square kilometres of cultivable land in comparison to an average of 653 in Europe. Farms have an average size of 1.3 hectares, in comparison to 14.7 in Europe, 50.7 in Latin America and 186 hectares in North America. These numbers regarding African agriculture cited by Mr. Lambro stress how urgent it is to increase mechanisation as well as to identify a method for bringing together the small producers so they are able to finally exit the cycle of family farming that is dedicated to self-consumption for subsistence. Mr. Lambro concluded his speech by mentioning a series of social actions targeted towards increasing agricultural productivity in various areas of the African continent the most recent of which has New Holland and CNH Industrial committed, within the scope of a cooperation agreement signed recently with FAO, to provide support for three years to a project for sustainable water management in the governorship of Kebili in Tunisia.

Words of wisdom
From Steve Birchall Poultry House Cleaning Services
............................................................................................................................................................................................... Industry developments and pressure from the supply chain are turning the spotlight on more efficient cleaning units as a way to increase performance while reducing antibiotics use. The packers and retailers are demanding less independance on the use of antibiotics to control disease so producers need to respond to this. To control disease and maintain production, the industry has to explore and adopt alternative ways to reduce the pathogen risk to birds. Better hygiene practices, based on more efficient cleaning of housing and equipment combined with strict biosecurity is an obvious starting point. It is entirely logical to get buildings as clean as possible before repopulating them to reduce the disease threat before the new birds arrive. New stock are under stress brought about by combination factors including transport, handling, vaccination and being exposed to new disease threats. The more hat can be done to reduce disease threats, the better. There is a real scope to improve the effectiveness of cleaning of all types of poultry housing but the starting point is a change of mind set. Too many producers regard cleaning as a “must do”, uninteresting and mundane chore, something that has to be done and the sooner it is done the better, however, nothing could be further from the truth. Cleaning should be seen as an integral part of a production system which can have a significant impact on performance, costs and profit. An efficient well planned and implemented cleaning procedure can reduce the disease threat to birds leading to better performance. It can also save time and reduce costs. An effective routine comprises of two different stages - cleaning and disinfection. Cleaning is essential to remove the environment in which pathogens thrive and to expose them to the subsiquent disinfectant. You can not disinfect dirt
unless soiling is removed, the pathogens will be protected from the disinfectant. The cleaning phase is crucial but this is not a case of taking an ardent approach with a high pressure power washer. While you can blast away some soiling, you will not remove the fats and proteins which make up much of the dirt on the walls and other surfaces. In addition, the use of high pressure creates an aerosol effect which can actually spread the pathogens and make them worse. To achieve an effective clean it is essential to apply a detergent and then to rinse away under low pressure followed by the application of disinfectant. Effective cleaning will help prevent the economic loss associated with outbreaks and is considerably cheaper than the cost of treating an outbreak with medicines. Using chemical detergents ensures that soiling is removed before disinfection resulting in a reduction in bacterial levels prior to restocking, giving the new birds the best possible start. Thorough cleaning based on a two stage routine could have a big impact on future profits and turn cleaning from a chore into a profit driver.

Thompson feeds snap up rival McLarnon’s ruminant business
............................................................................................................................................................................................... By Chris McCullough Belfast based animal feed manufacturer John Thompson and Sons Ltd has purchased the McLarnon ruminant feed business. McLarnon’s is based near Randalstown and was owned by Moy Park who will now concentrate on producing poultry feed at the original site. Demand for its high quality poultry feed has increased lately as more farmers in Northern Ireland are becoming involved with the industry. Moy Park’s director of Agriculture, David Gibson, said now was the right time to optimise the capacity of the mil in Randalstown. He said: “Moy Park has
undergone significant growth over the past two years and we are now processing over five million fresh chickens per week throughout the UK. “Now is the right time to optimise our own mill capacity in support of our business and this will also enable a £1.2 million mill investment to be made in 2016. “McLarnon’s ruminant business is a natural match with Thompson’s own expertise in this field of livestock production, and we are pleased to see it transfer to an environment where it will continue to thrive and grow in the future, and where the long heritage of McLarnon’s will continue.” Declan Billington, Thompson’s
chief executive officer, said the McLarnon’s brand and range of products would continue. He said: “Given Moy Park’s focus on poultry expansion, and our long-term relationship with them, it seemed only natural that we would come together to support the growth prospects of the McLarnon ruminant business. “The business will continue to trade its own unique brand and range of products and services with which the McLarnon customer base is comfortable. “We view this as a complementary business to our own, and we believe this acquisition will enable us to support the future growth ambitions of the McLarnon sales team,” he said.

Livestock medicine group..
responds to BBC Panorama programme examining antibiotic crisis
............................................................................................................................................................................................... The farming industry fully recognises concerns about growing resistance to antibiotics, RUMA (Responsible Use of Medicines in Agriculture Alliance) chairman Gwyn Jones said. The group responded to a BBC Panorama programme examining farming's role in the 'antibiotics crisis' shown on 23 May 2016. Jones said it was important to remember resistance in humans is largely attributed to human medical use with a recent study confirming farm animal use could be responsible for as few as one in every 370 clinical cases. "Despite this, the farming industry and those looking after the health of companion animals must ‘do their bit’ to control spread of resistance," he said. "This is why RUMA announced last week it is setting up an industry task force to look at how meaningful targets can be developed to replace, reduce and refine antibiotic use in UK agriculture. Jones said UK farming was already focused on reducing use of antibiotics deemed critically important for human medicine (CIAs). "Fluoroquinolone and 3rd and 4th generation cephalosporin sales into farming, which are CIAs, are already very low in the UK, representing just 0.9% of the total,” he explained. "While cephalosporins can be prescribed for use as intramammary treatments in cows to protect against or treat mastitis, a painful inflammation, these are mostly 1st or 2nd generation and not classified as critically important. "The 3rd and 4th generation cephalosporins comprise less
28 | June 2016 | AgriNews
than 9% of the total prescriptions of intra-mammary products, and this has been stable over the past two years. "In 2012 the poultry meat industry introduced a voluntary ban on the use of 3rd and 4th generation cephalosporins, and a commitment to reduce the use of fluoroquinolones which has since led to an overall reduction. "The 3rd and 4th generation cephalosporins authorised for use in pigs cannot be given infeed or in- water and are only ever administered to individual animals. "Furthermore, despite colistin making up less than 0.2% of UK antibiotic use in UK livestock, RUMA announced a voluntary restriction in December 2015 that it should only be used as the last effective antibiotic available for treating the sick animal," added Mr Jones. 'Interventions are not without consequence' He said RUMA welcomed the recognition that the withdrawal of some antibiotics from agricultural use could have wideranging impacts on welfare and the price of food. "Interventions are not without consequence. Bacterial infections and associated inflammation undoubtedly cause pain and discomfort to animals. "The treatment of such infections is a requirement of both national and EU animal welfare legislation and all vets are under oath to protect the health and welfare of the animals in their care," explained Mr Jones. "Any benefits for public health need to be clear, and balanced against the impact of restricted antibiotic use on animal welfare, the economic viability of our farms and overall UK food
security. "Badly handled, there is a real risk we will end up importing produce which increases risk to human health if our own, highlyregulated industry is rendered unviable through arbitrary curbs. "The focus needs to be on appropriate animal husbandry practice and nutrition with a focus on protecting animals from disease thus removing the need for them to be treated with antimicrobials in the first place." ‘Intensive vs extensive' misleading And while it was true different sectors and farming systems had much to learn from each other by way of useful reduction techniques, the ‘intensive vs extensive’ farming debate was misleading. "Intensity is not a factor in antimicrobial resistance and as indicated in the programme, there is no evidence that extensive farming systems or those with low antibiotic use experience less prevalence or maintenance of bacterial strains of potential concern to public health. "As the UK government states, resistance is a natural biological phenomenon which can be increased and accelerated by the various factors we are all – in human and animal medicine – trying to address,” said Mr Jones. "We use animal medicines to reduce the impact of disease on animal welfare. "The safety of people who consume food from treated animals is assessed and the necessary controls on withdrawal built in when products are authorised for use as veterinary medicines in these animals.
Aldi to join growing list..
of UK retailers to commit to cage free eggs
............................................................................................................................................................................................... Aldi UK has followed the discount chain’s Australian business by committing to sourcing only eggs from cage-free hens. The company’s Australian arm committed to going cage-free after a sustained online campaign by animal rights campaigners culminated in a 15-year-old girl launching a petition on Change.org. More than 40,000 people signed the petition in a matter of days and Aldi responded by announcing that it would stop sourcing cage eggs by 2025. The move was welcomed by animal welfare campaigners and Aldi’s UK business has now also committed to cage-free sourcing. "Aldi currently provides customers with a range of shell eggs, all of which are sourced from the UK and certified to meet British Lion Standards,” said Oliver King, corporate managing director at Aldi UK. "We know that animal welfare is an important consideration for our customers and we are
Come and visit us at the Pig and Poultry Fair 10th - 11th May 2016 Stand 340
committed to continuously improving sourcing practices across our supply chain. "As a result we have committed that from 2025 we will begin phasing out the sale of shell eggs from caged hens in our UK stores. Tom Willings, former agriculture director with Noble Foods, now a freelance consultant, said that the eggs on Britain’s supermarket shelves could be completely free range within 10 to 15 years "Meaningful commitments such as these take time to plan and implement. This time frame ensures that we can continue to work collaboratively with suppliers to minimise the impact on their business." In the UK, half of all eggs going into retail are already produced in free range systems. However, in Australia egg industry leaders have criticised Aldi’s announcement. The Australian Egg Corporation Ltd (AECL) said it was disappointed with the decision by the supermarket group.

Poultry & egg success!
Second royal coup for the Royal County Show 2016
............................................................................................................................................................................................... Royal Cheshire County Show’s award-winning Poultry and Egg shows have received the highest recognition possible from the UK’s governing body. The shows, conducted annually as part of the Royal Cheshire County Show, have had royal status bestowed on them by The Poultry Club of Great Britain regulates and administers the structure and status system of Poultry and Egg shows throughout the UK. It allocates status to poultry exhibitions according to, among other things, prestige, size and the excellence of the organisation administering the event. The receipt of royal status for the newly named Royal Cheshire Championship Poultry Show and Royal Cheshire Championship Egg Show holds many benefits for competitors, the Royal Cheshire County Show event and entire Cheshire community. John Tickle, Chief Steward of the Royal Cheshire County Show’s Poultry and Egg shows, explained: "We were already championship shows because of the sheer number of entries we attract from right across the UK. "But to be recognised as Royal Championship Shows puts Cheshire into a higher category of prestige
which is even more desirable for competitors and is reflective of the agricultural show as a whole event." The recognition will also boost the scope of competition for exhibitors. Previously, Egg Show competitors vied for one bronze award but with the new royal status, exhibitors will have the chance to compete for 10 bronze awards, one silver and one gold. "This will attract more exhibitors which is good for us and the whole event," Mr Tickle said. The Poultry Club of Great Britain regulates and administers the structure and status system of Poultry and Egg shows throughout the UK "We would not have been able to receive this recognition and prestige from The Poultry Club of Great Britain unless we were attached to a royal Show, which we are now." In Great Britain, the Royal Cheshire County Show is fortunate enough to boast the largest agricultural Poultry Show and the largest Egg Show. In 2015, poultry enthusiasts competed in 190 classes with 840 birds and Egg Show competitors competed in 66 classes with a whopping 750 plates of eggs. To put this in perspective, when Mr Tickle was appointed as Chief Steward of the Poultry and Egg
sections eight years ago, the poultry section was classed as a Regional Show as it attracted approximately 200 birds. In 2013, The Poultry Club of Great Britain made the then Cheshire Championship Egg Show the first stand-alone Egg Show in the UK as it attracted more than 400 plates of eggs (egg entries) to its competition. Mr Tickle and his team of six volunteers – Graham Fisher, William Pinlott, Chris Wise, Daniel Wise and Ben Pinlott – spend two weeks in the lead up to the event preparing the Poultry and Egg marquees for competition and display. In 2016, the majority of the judging will take place on the first day of the Show, Tuesday, June 21. On Wednesday, June 22, the Egg Marquee will become an interactive educational centre with three poultry judges on hand between 9:30am to 4:30pm where they will speak about different breeds and give expert advice on all things birds and eggs. "The Poultry Show and Egg Show wouldn’t be what they are without the exhibitors but of course, if we weren’t doing it right, we wouldn’t get the exhibitors either," Mr Tickle said. "It’s win-win."

‘The best thing i’ve ever bought’ Says happy Isuzu customer about his 3.5 tonne ‘grafter’
............................................................................................................................................................................................. You would assume that a successful and wealthy retired businessman who is currently developing a derelict boatyard into his ideal residence in Plymouth might have bought many items over the years that he would attest as ‘the best thing I’ve ever bought in my life’. Yet it’s not any of his yachts, houses or even the superbly situated boatyard plot where he is building the house of his dreams that fits that description for Anthony Collins. Instead, his palpable delight in his Isuzu truck is testament to the truck’s robust versatility that has made him such a huge fan. Anthony says; “This derelict plot in Plymouth is a passion of mine, where we will live in a beautiful house and I’ll be able to sail as often as I like with my boats moored in the harbour just in front of us. It’s a massive project and eventually I will also build a boat shed where apprentices will be trained to build boats. “I knew I was taking on a very ambitious project when I bought the boatyard which has been derelict for 25 years. I am in the process of restoring it to its former glory with my wife who is fully behind it. We have already sailed all over the world as I’ve been retired for over 20 years since I sold my Herefordshire-based joinery business. “We are building a whole new life for ourselves but the access is typically very narrow through

the historic old village of Turnchape,l within a conservation area. I knew I needed a versatile vehicle which would be capable of a lot of hard work on a congested construction site. Its turning circle, its size, its robustness, its tipping capability - all these things are just brilliant. I researched lots of small trucks, some of which were actually based on adapted car designs and they were completely unsuitable. I’d never bought a truck for personal use in my life and fortunately I was recommended to check out an Isuzu. I honestly can’t praise it enough, I love it!!” The first phase of Anthony’s million pound project will be ready by Christmas 2016, when he and his wife will move from a smaller house behind the main site into their glorious new abode. Peter Murphy, MD of Isuzu Truck UK says; “We are always delighted to hear back from our many very happy customers and it’s great to hear that when Mr Collins could have bought any truck on the market he chose our Grafter. He thoroughly checked out all types of vehicles for his special project but he chose our Grafter because it is so manoeuverable, strong and durable. Plus all Isuzu Grafters can legally tow a trailer and load weighing up to 3500kgs and this has proved perfect for Mr. Collins’ requirements.”
