Tracesure® Cu/I Calf

puts calves on target for calving at two years.

............................................................................................................................................................................................... Mineralising dairy heifer replacements with a slow-release trace element bolus is helping an award-winning dairy farming partnership to achieve target growth rates at first insemination. Heifers need to be big enough for inseminating at 15 months for calving at two years or they won’t conceive. For a Holstein Friesian heifer expected to be 660kg at first calving this would be 350-400kg. To achieve these optimum growth rates and to ensure heifers fully utilise their feed, diets must be supplemented with trace elements. At Dolphenby Farm, near Penrith, Cumbria, 2014 Farmers Weekly Dairy Farmers of the Year, Steve Brandon and Robert Craig, bolus their calves with Tracesure® Cu/I Calf at three months old. Mark Housby, who manages their spring calving herd, said the herd is only served with dairy semen in the first three weeks so all replacements are born within three weeks. “It is a race against time to get them as big, strong and healthy as possible to enter the herd to handle herd conditions,’’ says Mark. Tracesure® Cu/I Calf gives him peace of mind that every animal is getting the correct balance of trace elements. “It is the knowledge that we know we have done our best to give every heifer calf that hits the ground the best chance. “Results are good; their coats are good. Calves

are thriftier and they don’t get as many checks.’’ Tracesure® Cu/I Calf supplies calves with up to six months’ worth of selenium, cobalt, iodine and copper. It can be given to 100kg calves. At Cefn Amlwch Home Farm, near Pwllheli, dairy heifers graze for two summers before calving, firstly as calves and secondly as bulling heifers. The business, which runs a herd of 850 spring calving New Zealand Friesian cows, is successfully growing heifers at grass thanks to excellent grassland management and trace element supplementation. Calves are turned out onto pasture after they are weaned, at around 10-12 weeks old. A priority is to ensure that there is no check in growth rates at turnout. “We bolus at weaning and the calves never look back in terms of growth and fertility,’’ reports farm manager, Elgan Davies. “Grass is a completely new feed for these animals but the bolus allows them to make the best of the energy and protein in that grass, to keep their growth rates up.’’ Heifers are bulled at 330kg. “It is very important to the future production of the herd that we maximise growth in the early stages of life which is why the heifers need that trace element bolus at weaning,’’ says Elgan.

Poultry News

British poultry meat sector leads the way in antibiotic reduction

............................................................................................................................................................................................... Antibiotic usage data collected by the British Poultry Council (BPC) for 2015, shows the poultry meat sector has continued to make significant progress. The data collected in 2015 showed a 28% drop in overall usage of antibiotics compared to 2014. BPC Chairman John Reed believes that the industry will continue to make further improvements following on from analysis of the data. “Our sector has led the way, with real progress seen since the formation of our BPC Chicken Antibiotic Stewardship Scheme in 2011. The data shows that the industry is holding to its commitment.” The British poultry meat sector is currently the only sector that collects and shares its antibiotic usage with the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD). bpc and its members do not support routine use Last year, the BPC shared the full breakdown of the data, including antibiotic classes, with the VMD to better inform Government of actual usage in the poultry meat sector. The data was published in the recent UK Veterinary Antimicrobial Resistance and Sales Surveillance (VARSS) report, a move that received Government recognition. The BPC and its members recognise the importance on maintaining the integrity of all classes of antibiotics to support human and animal health. Driving Best Practice In 2012, BPC members signed up to a voluntary ban on third and fourth generation Cephalosporins, a move seen

8 | March 2015 | AgriNews

as best practice by the VMD. Recent data also shows that Fluoroquinolone usage was reduced by 53% in 2015. Daniel Parker, Veterinary Adviser to the BPC said, “We use the data collected to monitor usage of all antibiotic classes and identify where improvements can be made. Collecting this annual usage over a number of years will mean we can focus on trends.” Analysis of the data identified Colistin as an antibiotic that could be targeted. RUMA Speaking on behalf of the BPC Chicken Antibiotic Stewardship Scheme, Reed said, “we recognise the importance of Colistin as an antibiotic of last resort for human medicine, the BPC membership undertake not to use Colistin in their flocks.” The move marks another proactive decision by the sector, following through with its promise to promote responsible usage of antibiotics. Joint Approach The British poultry meat sector works closely with Government and will continue to submit annual usage data to the VMD, to maintain its openness and transparency with both the VMD and wider stakeholders. Industry also embarked on a joint piece of research with Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) at Weybridge, funding the APHA

Survey of Extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) producing E. coli in 2014-15. The British poultry meat sector is the only sector to have supported research into this issue. Reed said, “the industry decided to fund the research, so that we could have an accurate benchmark to measure any future developments.” The survey found that the prevalence of ESBLs in GB broiler flocks remains similar to or lower than surveys in broiler flocks from other EU countries. It also found that the main ESBL CTX-M sequence types identified are different from those most frequently seen in humans. Towards the end of 2016, the VMD sales data will be collated with the European Food Standards Agency (EFSA) Scientific opinion on public health risks of ESBLs in foodproducing animals.

Words of wisdom

From Steve Birchall Poultry Services Limited

............................................................................................................................................................................................... Industry developments and pressure from the supply chain are turning the spotlight on more efficient cleaning units as a way to increase performance while reducing antibiotics use. The packers and retailers are demanding less independance on the use of antibiotics to control disease so producers need to respond to this. To control disease and maintain production, the industry has to explore and adopt alternative ways to reduce the pathogen risk to birds. Better hygiene practices, based on more efficient cleaning of housing and equipment combined with strict biosecurity is an obvious starting point. It is entirely logical to get buildings as clean as possible before repopulating them to reduce the disease threat before the new birds arrive. New stock are under stress brought about by combination factors including transport, handling, vaccination and being exposed to new disease threats. The more hat can be done to reduce disease threats, the better. There is a real scope to improve the effectiveness of cleaning of all types of poultry housing but the starting point is a change of mind set. Too many producers regard cleaning as a “must do”, uninteresting and mundane chore, something that has to be done and the sooner it is done the better, however, nothing could be further from the truth. Cleaning should be seen as an integral part of a production system which can have a significant impact on performance, costs and profit. An efficient well planned and implemented cleaning procedure can reduce the disease threat to birds leading to better performance. It can also save time and reduce costs. An effective routine comprises of two different stages - cleaning and disinfection. Cleaning is essential to remove the environment in which pathogens thrive and to expose them to the subsiquent disinfectant. You can not disinfect dirt

unless soiling is removed, the pathogens will be protected from the disinfectant. The cleaning phase is crucial but this is not a case of taking an ardent approach with a high pressure power washer. While you can blast away some soiling, you will not remove the fats and proteins which make up much of the dirt on the walls and other surfaces. In addition, the use of high pressure creates an aerosol effect which can actually spread the pathogens and make them worse. To achieve an effective clean it is essential to apply a detergent and then to rinse away under low pressure followed by the application of disinfectant. Effective cleaning will help prevent the economic loss associated with outbreaks and is considerably cheaper than the cost of treating an outbreak with medicines. Using chemical detergents ensures that soiling is removed before disinfection resulting in a reduction in bacterial levels prior to restocking, giving the new birds the best possible start. Thorough cleaning based on a two stage routine could have a big impact on future profits and turn cleaning from a chore into a profit driver.

JCB take bow as oscars come to town

Tier 4 final New JBC Loadall

............................................................................................................................................................................................... A JCB Loadall telescopic handler has been playing a leading role in Hollywood…. ensuring the most glittering event in the global showbiz calendar all runs to plan. Preparations for the 88th Academy Awards are now in full swing as stars prepare to take to the red carpet for the ceremony on Sunday night. Greeting them as they arrive at the Dolby Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard will be giant versions of the statuette they all hope to go home with – an Oscar. And lifting the bigger than life-size versions into place around the theatre has been a JCB 512-56 Loadall made for the North American market at JCB’s World HQ in Staffordshire. Able to lift to heights of 17 metres (56 feet) and handle weights of 5.4 tonnes (12,000lbs), the Loadall made light work of putting the 24-feet high statues into position. The miniature versions coveted by the stars stand just 13½ inches high and weigh just over 3.6 kgs (8 lbs). The machine is owned by Alliance Rental Solutions, of Valencia, California, which specialises in providing equipment to the studio industry in Los Angeles. The Loadall was snapped hard at work by their eagle-eyed employee Erick Campuzano. JCB Salesman Robert Lara, Sales Manager for JCB dealer JCB of Southern California sold the machine to Alliance Rental Solutions. He said: “Alliance Rental Solutions are one of our most important customers and it’s fantastic to see their JCB Loadall playing such a high profile role in the preparations for this year’s Academy Awards.”

Outward changes to new JCB Loadall telescopic handlers making their UK debut at the LAMMA show, Peterborough in January 2016 are so subtle that even the most ardent machinery enthusiast will be hard-pressed to spot them. But close inspection of the Loadall 536-60, 541-70, high-lift 535-95 and the bulk handling champion 560-80 on display reveals a new ‘Loadall’ decal on the door and bright red ‘Agri’ decals to identify the latest versions of the World’s Number One telescopic handler! The other Loadall telehandlers produced to the new specification are the 531-70; the 536-7; and the 550-80. The only clue to their latest-spec identity is the lack of an external exhaust silencer – this is now housed beneath the engine hood and incorporates a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) urea injection system as a compact ‘one can’ solution that meets the requirements of the Euro Stage IV / US Tier 4 Final emissions legislation. The JCB EcoMAX T4 final engine’s efficient combustion means there is no need for an expensive diesel particulate filter (DPF) and its additional service requirements. Housing the silencer and SCR system beneath the engine hood protects this hardware from the weather, mud and dust. And because the engine hood itself is unchanged from previous models, visibility to the side and rear three-quarters is just as good as before. All Loadall Tier 4 telescopic handlers have 4.4-litre or 4.8-litre JCB EcoMAX T4 Final engines with the same power and torque characteristics as before, providing peak outputs of 109hp, 125hp and 145hp – so adding the SCR system has had no detrimental impact on machine performance. As a result, the latest machines maintain the competitive ownership costs established by their predecessors through low fuel consumption and high productivity, making them the most costeffective option for efficient on-farm materials handling. Average fuel consumption of just 5.97 litres/ hr – £2.65/hr at current diesel prices – has been recorded by JCB LiveLink telematics from more than 4,200 Loadall telescopic handlers, ranging from the 2.6 tonne, 5.6 metre 526-56 to the 6 tonne, 7.9 metre 560-80 bulk loader, while clocking up more than 2.5 million machine hours on a range of agricultural applications.

DA Forgie open days..

hosted at new Lisburn depot

............................................................................................................................................................................................... The biggest Kubota dealership in Northern Ireland, DA Forgie, recently held two open days to mark the launch of the company’s new Lisburn depot. DA Forgie is one of the country’s leading suppliers of agricultural, construction and groundscare equipment and has its main base near Limavady in County Londonderry. The company is the only dealership in Ireland, north and south, that offers the full line of Kubota products, and is the third full line Kubota dealer to be set up in the UK. As the business grew and with the adoption of the full portfolio of Kubota products David Forgie has expanded, opening a new depot in the Blaris Industrial Estate in Lisburn. The open days were held at the new Lisburn depot introducing customers to a wide variety of Kubota agricultural, groundscare and construction equipment as well as Merlo machinery. David Forgie, owner of DA Forgie said: “We have decided to align our agricultural product offering with Kubota’s recent move into the higher

horsepower agri market. “If the new range of M7001 tractors are as good as the rest of the Kubota machinery, then I know it’s going to go down really well with farmers.” The Lisburn branch will serve as a more central location for customers in Northern Ireland where they can view the Kubota and Merlo products. The company’s new Lisburn depot is a 6,400 square metre facility. It is being run by branch manager Ria Forgie and its staff will include a service engineer, sales and a store man. Kubota’s new range of high horsepower tractors, the M7001 Series, were on display at the open days along with a number of Kubota excavators and other construction equipment. The Kubota M7001 is the cleanest, most technical and powerful tractor range the popular Japanese company has ever built. It has been manufactured to target the heavy weight agricultural sector as this was a part of the market Kubota has no products available in, until now. The M7001 Series offers three models from 130HP to 170HP (M7131, M7151 and M7171).

Tempo becoming even better Vaderstad present several new features

............................................................................................................................................................................................... Väderstad is presenting several new features for Tempo. A new seed meter in aluminium, a new fertiliser coulter as well as the entirely new, threepoint linkage Tempo V. Tempo V is a new machine Tempo V is a three-point linkage, foldable machine for up to 12 rows. The machine can easily be switched from 12 rows with 45 cm row spacing to 8 rows with 75 cm spacing, for example. The machine’s frame is designed so that row units and fertiliser coulters can be moved to any position. Odd row numbers (such as 9 rows with 600 mm spacing) can also be handled on the same frame. “The keyword in development was ‘diversity’” says Lars Thylén at Väderstad. “We’ve developed a precision seed drill on which the row unit can be easily moved to vary row spacing. The result is a precision seed drill that can be easily adapted so that the same machine can be used to sow several different crops with different row spacing.” Well-proven technology that provides precision regardless of conditions The row units – with the PowerShoot technology that is insensitive to vibrations – are the same as on other Tempo models, which means that the precision seed drill can sow at high speed with

unsurpassed precision. The coulter pressure of up to 325 kg also enables sowing of everything from growing crops to cultivated fields. Full range of models Tempo V is available in seven different models. The number of row units varies from six to twelve depending on the model, and working widths are between 4.2 and 6.6 metres depending on row spacing. Seed meter in aluminium Beginning with the 2016 model, Tempo will be equipped with a new seed meter in aluminium. The new seed meter has an emptying hatch for easy cleaning when changing crops. There is also a 22 mm sowing system mounted in the new seed meter for crops such as pumpkins and large sunflowers. New fertiliser coulter Väderstad is also launching a new fertiliser coulter. The coulter is narrower, enabling mounting at 45 cm row spacing. The new fertiliser coulter features improved capabilities for various depth settings. Just as before, the fertiliser coulter can handle loads of up to 150 kg.

accurately at forward working speeds of up to 17km/h. Duncan McLeish, UK Sales Manager for KUHN Farm Machinery explains that forward operating speed is a key priority when drilling new crops and that the ESPRO enables increased productivity without the loss of seeding accuracy. “The ability to drill quickly is vital to ensure that crops are sown when soil conditions are at their best,” he said. “But this speed should never be at the expense of drilling accuracy. Nor should it compromise overall operational efficiency, which means horsepower requirements should also be a consideration.”

Pottinger innovations at LAMMA

............................................................................................................................................................................................... Review of LAMMA (UK) PÖTTINGER innovations at one of England's largest agricultural technology shows This year at LAMMA saw the Pottinger stand move to an indoor location. Located in Hall 5 this proved to be a very popular location with the visitors particularly as we benefited from heating. This provided a pleasant environment to discuss with customers their requirements. Attracting more than 42,000 visitors over the two days the event has become the leading UK Agricultural Machinery exhibition with now more than 900 exhibitors. New Holland at FIMA 2016 an edition with many awards and innovations

............................................................................................................................................................................................... New Holland presence at Fima 2 Fima Technical innovation awards + Spain’s Best of Specialised Tractor title The 39th edition of FIMA 2016 will be remembered as the edition of records. The famous International Agricultural Machinery Fair, which was held from 16 to 20 February in Zaragoza, Spain, closed after hosting more than 227,000 visitors and is considered one of the main fairs for the agricultural sector in southern Europe. It was not possible to miss New Holland's stand when visiting the fair. Covering an area of 2068 m2, New Holland welcomed the public, presenting many new products, which were previewed in Europe as well as technologically innovative interactive presentations. The innovations included, at the centre of the stand, the multi award-winning T7 Heavy Duty (Machine of the Year 2016, AE50 awards), which was also present in the Blue Power version. An interactive App explained the T7.315, presenting the models of the range from the customer point of view, guiding them along a path of discovering the main features, with images, video and 3D systems. Other important products of the brand were presented, such as the Braud 8030L, whose Blue Cab™ 4 cab received the FIMA 2016 Technical Innovation award: an animated 3D video explained its operation. Also the Triple-Clean™ cleaning shoe, which improves the cleaning ability of the combine harvester by 15%, received the FIMA 2016 Technical Innovation award. Finally, the T4LP tractor received the title of Spain's Best Specialised Tractor delivered by the Spanish Agriculture Minister Isabel Tejerina, during a deep stand visit . The winner of this specific award is determined by votes cast by both the public and a jury comprised of trade press and technical experts. Manufactured in

Jesi, Italy, the new T4LP Series, is highly versatile and has been designed to work in olive groves and in mountainous areas where a low centre of gravity and wide track stability are required to work on steep slopes. As regards harvesting, visitors were able to learn about the new forage harvester FR650 Forage Cruiser and the conventional combine CR7.90, CX8.70, which was also presented with the corn head. Thanks to VR1, the On Board360 App was able to "virtually transport" visitors directly on the new CX8 conventional combine or the T7 Heavy Duty tractor in the field, for a 360°, full-immersion experience. Riccardo Angelini, Business Director Spain Market for New Holland Agriculture and Chairman of the FIMA 2016 Organisational Committee declared: “Our commitment has started to bear fruit, with record numbers: from the number of visitors to the number of brands present, this fair has become a meeting and reference point for the agricultural industry.” In addition to the flash-mobs at different moments of the day, the brand also organised a meeting point at a famous bar in the historical centre of Zaragoza for an unforgettable after-fair event.

Sunny days ahead for M&M Timber

............................................................................................................................................................................................... M&M Timber’s manufacturing plant has taken on a distinctly sunny outlook as production of its renowned fencing stakes is being increased in response to demand created by the growing popularity of solar farms. Last year the company supplied a leading solar farm fencing specialist with over 4,000 stakes, but end of year totals from the contractor for the current year have more than trebled; such is the rapid growth of solar farms in the UK. M&M Timber has also received an enquiry from another solar farm fencing contractor, this time for 1,120 fencing stakes to be delivered to four separate sites. Legislation for solar farm perimeter fencing is quite strict, setting out minimum Government standards of proven security and a height of 9ft to safeguard the vulnerable solar panels from damage or theft by vandals. In some instances specialist fencing may be necessary to prevent access by deer, as well as deterring intruders.

The longer than standard bespoke stakes supplied by Midlands based M&M Timber are specially commissioned and manufactured to the highest quality standards. During production, the extra-strength stakes are peeled before being kiln dried and pressure treated with a preservative to increase in-service life up to 30 years. A leading specialist in timber fencing stakes and strainers, M&M Timber currently heads up the growing market for incised timber with its trademark Agricised process that carries a 15 year warranty as standard and is the ďŹ rst in the UK to apply the process to peeled and pointed fencing posts, which are an established longtime favourite with the farming and agricultural communities. The company also manufactures a popular AgriPost range, which features pressure treated machine rounded stakes and strainers and is still regarded as one of the best, low-cost options for traditional fencing.

Agri News test drive.. Linhai LH800-2D UTV

............................................................................................................................................................................................... The Linhai LH800-2D is a Perkins diesel powered 2 seater UTV with tipping rear load bed and a great standard specification. In the initial year the standard specification has been enhanced by including for a limited period by the additional equipment to include: •12v front winch with remote activation •Tow bar with ball and hitch •Glass screen and wiper •Hard cab roof •Brush doors The Linhai UTV comes fully road legal and can be registered as a T1 class tractor therefore zero road tax. In addition to the standard specification there are a number of optional extras available such as a full all weather hard cabin, a soft cabin and rear load covers for a variety of uses. By far the most impressive feature of this UTV is the 3 cylinder 800cc Perkins diesel engine. This power plant gives good power and great reliability. Coupled to a Canadian CTV gearbox with high and low ratios and rough terrain is tackled with ease. In depth testing has been carried out in some demanding environments from snowy mountain tops in Pitlochry to waterlogged farms in Dorset! On test we really put the Linhai through its paces on a specially designed off road course before taking it on the farm to try it out in what will be for a large percentage of those sold, its native environment in the UK! The large off road tyres are standard and when matched with the independent suspension and large suspension travel, the off road ability of the Linhai is great. Also helping is the switchable 4 wheel drive and independent front and rear diff locks. Linhai Industries is the importer and distributer of the Linhai range

into the UK. Currently the LH800 is the mainstay of the range in the UK but plans are in place for further expansion with other models of ATV to follow soon. Duncan Wildman, one of the directors of Linhai Industries says “We have had a great response so far with the diesel Linhai UTV both from dealers and the public. We have a distribution network based in Elland, West Yorkshire with another base in Perth, Scotland to supply direct to the Scottish market. We have ensured that our parts department is stocked with a comprehensive supply of all the parts we could need in the dealer network and have put into place an industry leading 3-year warranty backed by one of the largest warranty providers in the UK. It was very important to us to ensure that we can offer a great service to the dealers and customers from day one. We are in the process of building a dealer network around the UK with a number of dealer sites already on board and more to be announced very soon.” The Linhai UTV is manufactured in China by the Jingsu Linhai Group, one of the largest state owned enterprises in the country. This is a huge corporation with over sixty different arms in different industries and has been manufacturing engines, motorcycles and UTV products for over forty years. The LH800 UTV is sold in countries all over the world in large numbers

with great success. The UTV has been tweaked for the UK market by Linhai Industries in the UK to make it perfect for the UK weather and environment. Although manufactured in China the UTV uses the Perkins engine and Canadian gearbox, the machines are partially disassembled at the factory for transport to the UK then completed in the UK after being transported to the West Yorkshire base. This gives the engineers of Linhai Industries in the UK the ability to control the quality and reliability of every unit being sold. Duncan Wildman describes a rigorous testing and pre delivery procedure that all of the machines go through before delivery to the customers. At the beginning of April, Linhai Industries Ltd will announce the launch of a new finance scheme to suit the new Linhai 800 UTV. Supplied through our recognised dealers, the finance package will be enhanced by a repair and maintenance service availability to our Linhai customer’s on their own site by qualified engineers known to the customer.

The Isuzu D-Max Blade

The flagship model of the multi-award winning pick up range

............................................................................................................................................................................................... The flagship model of the multi-award winning pick-up range – is getting a centennial Venetian Red paint finish as part of the celebrations to mark the 100th anniversary since the company first set up operations in Tokyo, Japan. The glowing red colour scheme will be limited to 100 D-Max Blade pick-up vehicles. The vibrant Venetian Red colour will leave a lasting impression as it takes hints from the same shade of red consistently used by Isuzu throughout the brand’s history. The top-of-therange double-cab Blade is available from just £25,999 (CVOTR) in manual transmission and the eye-catching Venetian Red finish comes at no extra cost. The Blade, which has been a big hit since it was launched in 2014, is already available in Cosmic Black or Pearlescent White. The D-Max Blade range-topper comes with a host of extra features and quality interior appointments for a premium level of comfort and refinement, including superior leather upholstery, 18-inch Shadow alloy wheels and choice of Black Mountain Top Roller Cover

with Black Rear Style Bar or Colour Coded Aeroklas Leisure Canopy. At the heart of the Blade remains the powerful-yet-efficient 2.5-litre twin-turbo diesel engine, producing 163 PS and 400 Nm of torque. Isuzu’s advanced power unit returns a highly impressive fuel economy of 38.7 mpg on a combined cycle. Owners also benefit from a heavyweight towing capacity of 3.5 tonnes (braked trailer) and 1,072 kg (manual) / 1,067 kg (auto) payload. Isuzu entered its centenary year on a rich vein of form, as the longest-running Japanese car manufacturer continues to break sales records in the UK. With 6,220 vehicle registrations in 2015, Isuzu UK made a 13% year-on-year improvement while also recording a 478% sales boost compared to five years ago. Further model news is expected later in the year. Every new D-Max sold in the UK is backed by the company’s pioneering, five-year / 125,000mile warranty.
