Direct sales approach makes Bauer slurry tankers more attractive for large-scale slurry and digestate spreading Bauer is re-launching its high-specification tankers in Britain by supplying contractors and large farm operators direct at more favourable prices but with service and parts support still available nationwide through Bauer dealers. “The market for large tankers with specialist application equipment is very competitive with a number of players involved,” says Adrian Tindall, Bauer UK & Ireland sales manager. “Dealing direct with the professional operators most likely to use our machines will enable us to ensure we provide the right features and specification for their needs, at prices competitive with other high-quality products.” Bauer tankers available in sizes from 10.5cu m to 24cu m – 10,500-litres to 24,000-litres – are unique in the UK and Ireland for having a hand-made polyester tank mounted on a galvanised steel chassis. The heart-shaped tank cross section results in a low centre of gravity for good stability in hilly fields and on the road, while indents provide ample space for wide and large diameter ﬂotation tyres to minimise soil compaction. Using polyester rather than steel saves a significant amount of weight over a quality-spec steel tanker – as much as 3 tonnes with the 24cu m model. It also provides a container impervious to corrosion. “That is particularly relevant to farms and contractors involved in handling biogas plant digestate, which can be more corrosive than regular livestock slurry,” notes Adrian Tindall. “Together with

the corrosion-resistant galvanised chassis, it means these tankers clean up really well and can look like new even after a lot of use, which results in strong re-sale values.” The tankers are available with Bauer spiral or centrifugal high capacity pumps giving fast filling and spreading rates. A front-mounted filling arm is available for quick turnarounds at the slurry store and a cleaner working experience for the operator. Application options include a double nozzle spray boom for surface spreading up to 27m wide, and a dribble hose applicator in widths from 9m to 30m with a macerating distributor, hydraulic drip stop and hydraulic folding. A drag shoe applicator with working widths of 5.3m to 21m provides in-crop application of slurry or digestate directly on to the ground; a disc injector in 5.2m to 8m widths places liquid beneath the surface for minimum losses through evaporation and quick resumption of pasture grazing; and a spring tine cultivator injector is available for incorporating slurry or digestate into seedbeds. Chassis options include a cranked single axle for smaller tankers in the range to give an extra-low centre of gravity; rear-steer tandem axles with leaf spring or air suspension – the latter is standard on the triple axle 24cu m model – and four-point rear linkage for a mounted applicator. “With all those options, each tanker is specced and priced individually,” notes Adrian Tindall. “But an 18.5cu m tandem axle machine with 15m dribble bar will be about £70,000; and an auto loading system will add around £6000.”

Everyone will agree that accurate application of pesticides is not only desirable but essential whether for the environmental, the consumer or the grower point of view. Accurate and targeted use of pesticides is all part of modern agriculture. That’s why back in the mid 90’s the Chemical Application members of the Agricultural Engineers Association (AEA) devised a test for application machinery to make sure it was working as intended and with a qualiﬁed operator would apply pesticides accurately and on target. In the early years of 2000 this test became the National Sprayer Testing Scheme as one of the main pillars of the Voluntary Initiative. Now NSTS is an accepted part of arable agriculture and requirement of the major crop assurance schemes and supermarket protocols, requiring that farmers and growers have their sprayers inspected annually. Testing pesticide application equipment is soon to become even more important as the Sustainable Use Directive requires that all pesticide application equipment is tested by 26th November 2016. The NSTS is available through a network of test centres who have qualiﬁed examiners available to National Sprayer Testing Scheme. inspect and confirm the equipment is of the standard required. The test is usually carried out at the owner’s premises at a mutually agreed convenient time. The examiner will charge for the inspection, NSTS have no input into the cost of individual tests; the cost being commercial at the point of use. Additionally machine owners are free to choose their nearest or preferred test centre a list of test centres can be found on the NSTS website www.nsts.org.uk As confirmation of the result of the test the examiner will apply a pass sticker to the machine and give the owner a copy of the test report form. Other copies of the form are returned to NSTS Administration where the information is retained on a database of all tested machines. This information is available to crop assurance Certification Bodies for verification. Having an NSTS test ensures that the machine is working correctly and capable of delivering the correct dose on target. It also helps to reduce costly downtime and ensures reliability of an important piece of equipment used by farmers and growers. Improved suspension New Bobcat 3400 and 3400XL utility vehicles provide both an adjustable independent front dual A-arm suspension and an adjustable rear de Dion multi-link suspension system. The new suspension system provides the operator and passengers with a more comfortable ride, tighter turning radius, increased payload capacity and more stability when towing. Each utility vehicle wheel moves independently, keeping all wheels in contact with the ground, for maximum traction.

Vets Develop New Concept to Reduce Poultry Antibiotic Use

UK - A poultry veterinary practice has developed a fresh approach to reducing antibiotic usage on farm, to help fight the worsening issue of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The ABC concept aims to help farmers to improve chick health and intestinal integrity, with the aim of reducing the need for medicinal intervention and focusing medicines where they are most needed. ABC stands for Applied Bacterial Control and involves the creation of individual husbandry solutions for each farm, and also the use of products like short-chain fatty acids, essential oils and beneficial bacteria to boost bird health. “Poultry producers are coming under increasing pressure from retailers and processors to reduce antibiotic usage,” said Richard Turner from St David’s Poultry Team, the veterinary organisation behind the new idea. “But putting that into practice on farm without adverse welfare implications is easier said than done, which is why we have focussed so much effort on developing a robust system that farmers can adopt. “We have had proven success in trials and on farms, and we are now working with large integrators to roll the ABC approach out across the UK,” Mr Turner said. Antibiotic use in poultry is low and tightly controlled, and it is essential that the industry

continues to have access to these medicines, he warned. “The ABC approach is not to rule out antibiotic use, but to improve overall poultry health and focus the medication where it is needed.” For optimum efficacy, the vets say it is best to adopt ABC at every stage of the supply chain, from breeder to finisher, as it requires considerable knowledge of the farm and potential causes of intestinal dysbacteriosis. “Diarrhoea can be a serious problem on poultry farms, and it can have multiple causes, so taking an holistic approach to tackling it is essential,” said Mr Turner. Researchers from the organisation are also investigating the use of beneficial bacteria that cannibalise ‘bad’ bacteria, creating ongoing protection against disease. “In pigs, bacterial cultures can be used to specifically kill salmonella, and bacteria can also be sprayed onto surfaces post cleaning to produce bacterins which then kill E coli,” he added. “There are many competitive interactions between bacteria and taking advantage of these competitors opens a completely new approach to improving bird health. "Producers are always aiming for sterile environments, but it may be that colonising a farm or hatchery with beneficial bacteria is the way of the future.”

The packers and retailers are demanding less independance on the use of antibiotics to control disease so producers need to respond to this. To control disease and maintain production, the industry has to explore and adopt alternative ways to reduce the pathogen risk to birds. %HWWHU K\JLHQH SUDFWLFHV EDVHG RQ PRUH HIĆ&#x201C; FLHQW cleaning of housing and equipment combined with strict biosecurity is an obvious starting point. It is entirely logical to get buildings as clean as possible before repopulating them to reduce the disease threat before the new birds arrive. New stock are under stress brought about by combination factors including transport, handling, vaccination and being exposed to new disease threats. The more hat can be done to reduce disease threats, the better. There is a real scope to improve the effectiveness of cleaning of all types of poultry housing but the starting point is a change of mind set. Too many producers regard cleaning as a â&#x20AC;&#x153;must doâ&#x20AC;?, uninteresting and mundane chore, something that has to be done and the sooner it is done the better, however, nothing could be further from the truth. It can also save time and reduce costs. An effective routine comprises of two different stages - cleaning and disinfection. Cleaning is essential to remove the environment in which pathogens thrive and to expose them to the subsiquent disinfectant. You can not disinfect dirt

unless soiling is removed, the pathogens will be protected from the disinfectant. The cleaning phase is crucial but this is not a case of taking an ardent approach with a high pressure power washer. While you can blast away some soiling, you will not remove the fats and proteins which make up much of the dirt on the walls and other surfaces. In addition, the use of high pressure creates an aerosol effect which can actually spread the pathogens and make them worse. To achieve an effective clean it is essential to apply a detergent and then to rinse away under low pressure followed by the application of disinfectant. Effective cleaning will help prevent the economic loss associated with outbreaks and is considerably cheaper than the cost of treating an outbreak with medicines. Using chemical detergents ensures that soiling is removed before disinfection resulting in a reduction in bacterial levels prior to restocking, giving the new birds the best possible start. The Fleet World Honours are presented annually to those motor manufacturers, service companies and individuals that have, in the opinion of the judges, achieved the highest possible level of excellence in their sector. The Fleet World Honours are open to all motor manufacturers. The judging process combines the expert opinion of the Fleet World editorial team with the values provided by a number of leading leasing companies and ﬂeet data providers. The judging panel is chaired by Steve Moody, Editor of Fleet World, and includes John Kendall, Alex Grant, Natalie Wallis and Dan Gilkes from the Fleet World editorial team. Residual value, maintenance and reliability data is provided by ALD Automotive, LeasePlan and Arval. Market value data is provided by EurotaxGlass and CAP.
