Bentall & Rowlands

We take looking after grain very seriously!

............................................................................................................................................................................................... Keeping your grain, investment and people safe is Bentall Rowlands mantra. We work on doing so in a number of ways; during the enquiry stage, design stage, production stage and aftersales care. Bentall Rowlands is one of the few silo manufacturers who have obtained the CE mark. We undertook this as technically any product sold within Europe should be manufactured by a CE certified company. You may question what, as a grain producer, does this mean to you and the answer is simple, peace of mind. From the first point of contact, to the delivery of the finished product, each step is mapped out. Having a clear and precise paper trail is only a small part of the process. Every structure produced by the company is designed by an engineer to current codes; this ensures that the equipment is fit for purpose. Under CE, the manufacturing of the product is carried out by coded wielders and fully trained staff. Every piece of steel that goes through the factory is recorded and test certificates are logged to each job. The whole process ensures that the equipment is designed to the most current codes, manufactured using fully trained staff and certified steel. Bentall Rowlands now produce their silos in both DIN 1055 and Eurocode versions. DIN 1055 was always considered to be the highest standard available for silos. The new Eurocode surpasses DIN 1055 and the latest version of Eurocode looks even more closely at the loads imposed within the silo by the grain. On the smaller bins, this has a lesser effect on the silo build-up as our silos are to such

a high engineering standard. However, on the larger and very tall silos we start to take into account the “patch” load. When designing these larger silos we have to assume that a given amount of grain will stick to one side of the silo. This gives an uneven hoop and vertical load which the silo must withstand. To the end user this simply means that our silos are designed to the best possible code. There are other design codes for silos used, such as ANSI (American National Standards Institute) and there are many differences between the two codes. DIN 1055 assumes that the structure will be used in an industrial way. While many farmers think that this would not apply to them as their silos are more for agricultural use this is not always the case. Many farms have wet bins, hopper silos, that will be emptied and filled many times during a season and DIN 1055 allows for this. Some manufacturers don’t like to tell you that their silos are limited to a given number of rotations. We have no such limitations. When we look deeply into DIN, it differs in a number of ways from other standards. Two of the main differences is in the way the forces/pressures from the grain are transferred to the structure and in turn transferred to the silo base and the safety factors used. It assumes that the theoretical weight (bulk density) of the grain is far higher than the grain it will be storing. The safety factors that DIN and Eurocode call to be used are far higher than other design standards. Long gone are the days of “the heaviest bin is the best bin”. With today’s modern steels this is no longer the case. Our silo barrels

utilise 100mm corrugated steel, which adds strength and helps to reduce product hang-up. These are produced from prime high tensile steel. Their very high yield strength contributes to a solution that increases the payload capacity and gives higher strength structures. This steel is corrugated and rolled in our modern factory using state of the art equipment ensuring that every sheet is the same. This not only aids assembly but gives a strong, water tight joint. The way that we connect the components is also very important. The recently developed new vertical seam bolting pattern still uses a two row system. This reduces erection time over other designs and increases the bearing capacity of the joint by 5%. The spun galvanised bolts also help to extend the life of the silo. This galvanised coating is on top of the standard bolt covering – “double covering, double life”. The way we connect our stiffeners differ from other silo manufacturers. Rather than relying on edge to edge contact or bolt shear to transfer loads, we use a horizontal plate to transfer the axial load from stiffener to stiffener. This connection is held tightly into position with a back plate. The whole connection uses only 8 bolts which makes it far easier and quicker to assemble. A grain dust explosion inside a silo is a rare event and for over ten years Bentall Rowlands has offered as an option pressure relief roof panels; simple in design yet very effective. The number of roof panels used depends on the volume of the silo and the acceleration of the gases.

Cereals show 2016 Rabi partners with Cereals

New features to be announced

The Cereals Event is delighted to announce a partnership with the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (R.A.B.I). Starting in March 2016, the organisations will work together to promote the charitable endeavours of the RABI – both how to support the charity, and also how the farming community can benefit from the welfare services offered by the charity. “We feel enormously privileged to be able to showcase the great impact that the R.A.B.I has on the agricultural community”, says Jon Day, Cereals Event Director, “they offer a vital lifeline to those facing hardship, from recent flooding to long term medical care. We hope that our visitors and exhibitors will support the RABI at both events.” Being the charitable partner with Cereals will see the R.A.B.I logo appearing on all publications, but more than that will be their opportunity to engage with the 25,000 visitors. In the first two months of 2016, R.A.B.I has helped 23 farmers and their families who were affected by the recent flooding across the North West and this number is set to rise over the year. Suzie Deely, Corporate Development Manager at RABI comments, “R.A.B.I is thrilled to be working with Cereals in 2016. Every year hundreds of new people ask R.A.B.I for help because of things such as illness, accidents, animal disease, family breakdown or extreme weather. Last year we gave out £1.9 million in grants to farming people and our work is funded primarily by donations and money raised at events arranged by our county committees of volunteers. Working with Cereals 2016 will help us to raise awareness about what we do and we look forward to an exciting and successful partnership.”

From the Soil Pit to a drone’s eye view The Cereals Event is pleased to confirm it has two new features at the showground this year. Following market research with both visitors, nonvisitors and exhibitors, Haymarket have established the Drone Zone and Soil Pit to provide hands on knowledge transfer to arable farmers. Drone Zone: Visitors will have the chance to see the drones in action at the new AgHawk Drone Demonstration Zone. By preregistering or collecting a voucher on the day visitors can have-a-go at programming and flying the drone. Keith Geary of G2Way drones explains, ”After the trial flights we will take visitors through the information and data that they have gathered and explain how this can support business decisions around weed control, reducing input costs and drainage decisions, for example.” Soil Pit – NIAB NIAB TAG’s Head of Farming Systems Research Ron Stobart introduces the Soil Pit: “Our 8m long, 4m wide and 1.2m deep walk-through soil pit is a unique and exciting opportunity for visitors to check out the local soil profile at eye level and study the rooting of a range of cover crops and cereal crops. We hope to show how a wellstructured soil can help water infiltration and aid moisture retention, demonstrate how to increase soil aeration for root growth and biological function and help growers improve the workability of their soil” There will be four mixes of cover crops to be shown in the pit this year. They have been selected for their strong root growth to give visitors clear ideas of the impact that these crops have on soil.

Kuhn UK

New entry-level trailed sprayer from Kuhn.

............................................................................................................................................................................................... KUHN Farm Machinery will officially launch a new 3,000 litre entry-level crop sprayer to its range of trailed machines at this year’s Cereals event. Previously unveiled at Agritechnica in late 2015, the LEXIS 3000 is now available in the UK and will make its British debut at Cereals on 15th and 16th June. The LEXIS 3000 has been designed as a lower cost, simpler machine, but one which still offers the same efficiency and ease of use as KUHN’s high end models such as the METRIS and OCEANIS. The new machine features a 3,000 litre polyethylene tank (actual capacity is 3,150 litres) and a 320 litre rinsing tank, and is available with MTA2,

MEA2, RHPM and RHPA folding aluminium booms ranging from 18 to 24 metres in width. TRAPEZIA or EQUILIBRA suspension systems maintain a stable spraying height on rough terrain while an independent anti-whiplash system protects the boom from damage during sudden braking and acceleration. The LEXIS features KUHN’s MANUSET valve system which uses two ‘steering wheel’ type valves to control the machine’s main spraying and flushing circuits and requires 30-50% fewer valve operations compared to many competitor machines. A centralised maintenance area provides easy access to key filling, suction and bowl filters as well as the spraying pump for easier and

quicker machine maintenance. Two sealed storage units provide a safe, clean and secure place to store essential Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). The LEXIS can be controlled via RPB or REB3 control boxes and can also be used with KUHN’s full-colour VISIOREB terminal which provides full set-up control and enables automatic, GPS controlled section cut-offs to be programmed. The LEXIS 3000 has a hitch to axle length of 4.05m and an overall width of 2.23m. When fitted with standard 9.5 x 48 tyres (other tyre sizes are available) the sprayer has a transport height of 3.08m (18m boom) or 3.50m (24m boom). The 24m version has an unladen weight of 2,057kg.

Kubota..

Sponsor machinery for university

JCB: world first Dual tech transmission

...............................................................................................................................................................................................

Leading groundcare and agricultural machinery supplier Kubota UK is lending its support to Harper Adams University by sponsoring machinery for teaching, research, campus upkeep and farm operations. The first machine to be delivered to the university thanks to this new partnership was Kubota’s RTV400Ci, a powerful and rugged utility vehicle, which has been provided by the company for use by the university’s grounds department. Receiving the RTV on Monday, grounds manager Mark Hall said: “I am very thankful to Kubota. This is a vital piece of kit for us when maintaining the grounds and sports pitches. It will allow us to easily and efficiently move tools and equipment around. “I welcome this opportunity to work with Kubota.” Thanks to the variety of machines it can provide, Kubota UK will be supporting a wide range of work across the university: from the RTV for the grounds department, to compact, mid-range and agricultural Kubota tractors for the farm, as well as mid-range products for the engineering department, Animal Production, Welfare and Veterinary Sciences Department and Crops and Environment Research Centre (CERC).

JCB today launches its new AGRI Pro Loadall range with the world’s first dual technology transmission designed specifically for agricultural telescopic handlers – one that combines the best characteristics of powershift and hydrostatic drives. The unique DualTech VT variable transmission has been developed by JCB’s own engineering team and is at the heart of a new range of premium-specification, high-performance telescopic handlers launched by JCB Agriculture: the JCB 531-70, 536-70 and 541-70 AGRI Pro Loadalls. The machines now have an advanced powertrain that brings together the proven power, torque and economy of the 4.8-litre JCB EcoMAX engine and the exclusive new DualTech VT transmission. JCB Chief Engineering and Innovation Officer Tim Burnhope said: “DualTech VT truly provides the best of both worlds, combining the low-speed controllability and easy driving characteristics of hydrostatics with the higher speed efficiency of direct drive powershift. The result is a machine range which is up to a massive 25% more productive than competitive models when handling. Drawing on our expertise in both hydrostatic and powershift transmissions, DualTech VT is a massive achievement for our design and engineering team who have raised driveline technology to new heights. The new AGRI Pro Loadalls offer unique features and driving characteristics making them perfect for farmyard, field and road.” Key features of the new DualTech VT transmission include: • Fully hydrostatic drive providing fine stepless speed control up to 19kph from standstill • Automatic switching to electronically-modulated three-speed powershift above 19kph for optimum power efficiency in higher speed field work, road travel and towing • Power and Economy modes to optimise performance, efficiency and running costs and minimise running costs

The segmented distribution head means halfside shut-off from the tractor seat or via GPS SectionControl. The new 30m Super-S2 boom for the UF mounted sprayers completes an extended boom line-up that now starts with a simple 3 section Super-S1 boom up to 21 m and then the heavyduty Super-S2 from 18m up to 30m. This machine will be out in the Sprays & Sprayers ring showing the new AmaSwitch system in operation. AmaSwitch electric individual nozzle shut-off for 50 cm part-width sections via GPS SectionControl is available for all mounted, trailed and selfpropelled models now on top of the AmaSelect electric individual nozzle control systems that enables different nozzles sizes to be engaged automatically on the move depending on speed rate and spray quality required. AmaSelect is now available for all UX trailed and Pantera self-propelled sprayers. 50 cm individual nozzle control can save as much as 5% more than a standard GPS SectionControl system. The Argus Twin ZA-TS fertiliser spreader with its radar monitoring and automatic adjustment of spread pattern will take centre stage on the Stand this year. June 15th & 16th the venue this year is Chrishall Grange, Duxford, Cambs.

During the heavy rain that followed in the wake of Storm Desmond in December last year, Garstang Cricket Club experienced severe flooding with water getting into the pavilion, washing away the perimeter fence, ruining machinery and cricket equipment, such as sight screens and covers, as well as leaving a layer of silt deposited all over the outfield. Since then Head Groundsman, Tom Wells, has been working tirelessly to get the pitches up and running for the start of the new season. To assist in the reparations, Philip Dixon Contractors Ltd was drafted in with their new Amazone Groundkeeper set up in scarifying mode. This Lancashire based company, which was formed in 1978 by Philip Dixon, is still a family-run firm in the hands of Philip Dixon and his wife Catherine, together with sons Ryan, Sam and Tom and a team of highly experienced loyal staff. They have always been a forward thinking business offering a personal service with a reputation for professionalism and quality of work that goes back over 50 years. Although with its roots in land drainage, the company also now provides a complete service in the amenity sector from re-grading, laser levelling, preparation and seeding work, through to maintenance operations including scarifying, sand slitting, top dressing, etc. A policy of continuous investment in machinery and training has resulted in an extensive fleet of specialist machinery as well as a team of experienced operators that undertakes work mainly in the North West, and, as part of this investment, they recently added a Groundkeeper GHL/T 1500 SmartCut flail mower collector from local Amazone Groundcare dealer, GGM Groundcare, to their extensive fleet.

Words of wisdom

From Steve Birchall Poultry House Cleaning Services

............................................................................................................................................................................................... Industry developments and pressure from the supply chain are turning the spotlight on more efficient cleaning units as a way to increase performance while reducing antibiotics use. The packers and retailers are demanding less independance on the use of antibiotics to control disease so producers need to respond to this. To control disease and maintain production, the industry has to explore and adopt alternative ways to reduce the pathogen risk to birds. Better hygiene practices, based on more efficient cleaning of housing and equipment combined with strict biosecurity is an obvious starting point. It is entirely logical to get buildings as clean as possible before repopulating them to reduce the disease threat before the new birds arrive. New stock are under stress brought about by combination factors including transport, handling, vaccination and being exposed to new disease threats. The more hat can be done to reduce disease threats, the better. There is a real scope to improve the effectiveness of cleaning of all types of poultry housing but the starting point is a change of mind set. Too many producers regard cleaning as a “must do”, uninteresting and mundane chore, something that has to be done and the sooner it is done the better, however, nothing could be further from the truth. Cleaning should be seen as an integral part of a production system which can have a significant impact on performance, costs and profit. An efficient well planned and implemented cleaning procedure can reduce the disease threat to birds leading to better performance. It can also save time and reduce costs. An effective routine comprises of two different stages - cleaning and disinfection. Cleaning is essential to remove the environment in which pathogens thrive and to expose them to the subsiquent disinfectant. You can not disinfect dirt

unless soiling is removed, the pathogens will be protected from the disinfectant. The cleaning phase is crucial but this is not a case of taking an ardent approach with a high pressure power washer. While you can blast away some soiling, you will not remove the fats and proteins which make up much of the dirt on the walls and other surfaces. In addition, the use of high pressure creates an aerosol effect which can actually spread the pathogens and make them worse. To achieve an effective clean it is essential to apply a detergent and then to rinse away under low pressure followed by the application of disinfectant. Effective cleaning will help prevent the economic loss associated with outbreaks and is considerably cheaper than the cost of treating an outbreak with medicines. Using chemical detergents ensures that soiling is removed before disinfection resulting in a reduction in bacterial levels prior to restocking, giving the new birds the best possible start. Thorough cleaning based on a two stage routine could have a big impact on future profits and turn cleaning from a chore into a profit driver.

..More transparency needed in supply chain to create fairness

............................................................................................................................................................................................... ANALYSIS - More needs to be done to ensure more transparency in the supply chain in the UK to produce greater fairness for farmers, processors and retailers. The grocery codes adjudicator needs more powers to ensure that voluntary codes in place with the processing sector at present are enforced. And there needs to be more openness from the retail sector over their own needs, the requirements of the consumer and the demands of the market to allow farmers to produce the products that are required. Speaking at the Westminster Food and Nutrition Forum Keynote Seminar on the Priorities for the UK Supply Chain and the Grocery Codes Adjudicator, Ruth Mason, the chief food chain advisor with the National Farmers’ Union said that there needs to be more transparency in the supply chain to help farmers overcome the increasing volatility they are facing. She said that farmers in the UK are facing unusual market conditions with pig, dairy and wheat prices having fallen by more than 30 per cent each over the last two years. She added that as the industry moves further and further away from the support mechanisms, the volatility in the market is likely to increase. However, Ms Mason said that the ability of farmers to produce what the market demanded was hindered because they were not informed by the retailers about the volumes of product that would be required and where and when the products are required. Farmers also had no idea of the price that they would be receiving for their produce. She stressed that there are three key areas that need to be addressed – transparency over volumes, transparency over where and when products are required and transparency over price. She said the farmer, processor

28 | May 2016 | AgriNews

and retailer need to be working together. “We need a fair trading relationship,” Ms Mason told the seminar. She said there have to be some parameters for farmers to work in and they must be given they tools to supply the market needs – to supply the goods that the consumers will want and the retailers will sell. She said that some form of more formal code with the processing sector needed to be instituted to help farmers meet the supply chain needs. And she added that in the poultry and horticulture sectors where the farmers are closer to the customer in the supply chain there have been good changes, but these need to be repeated in other parts of the food supply chain. David Lowe, a solicitor with Gowling WLG, said that the grocery code adjudicator had made a real difference to the supply chain, particularly in changing payment practices and demands. However, he said that because the suppliers do not know what they will be paid several years down the line, they have no incentive to invest and the suppliers also have concerns that they will be squeezed on both sides by the demands of the retailer and the needs of the farmer. Jack Ward, the chief executive of the British Growers Association told the seminar that the processors, suppliers and retailers did not take into account the unforeseen challenges to farmers and growers such as weather conditions that change the availability and the volumes of produce. “There is a gap between the realities of growing produce and the expectations of the supply chain,” he said. “All sections of the supply chain need to be working together.” Jan Godsell, professor of operations and supply chain

strategy at the University of Warwick said that it was necessary for the different partners in the supply chain to work together for the common good. And she hit out at some promotion practices for not taking into account the seasonality of produce and for creating false spikes in trade. On the international markets, Tom Wills the policy officer at Traidcraft said that more needed to be done to prevent unfair trading practices around the world that highlighted other issues such as working conditions, and the needless production of food waste, because of the changes in the demands of the suppliers and retailers. The Grocery Code Adjudication, Christine Tacon said that the last survey of trading relationships and the supply chain had shown there were nine per cent fewer complaints about retail bad practice and supply chain issues in 2014. She said that in the first year of the Grocery Codes Adjudicator eight out of 10 suppliers felt there had been breaches of the code, where as last year the number had fallen to seven out of 10. She said that there has been success in tackling issues of forensic auditing, incidents of “drop and drive” where the way deliveries are made and recorded had allowed retailers to dispute the quantities delivered. She said there had also been progress in the way consumer and producer complaints were being handled. She said there has also been an improvement in suppliers being able to get money back and a reduction in the delays in payments to suppliers by retailers. She said the role of the adjudicator is being reviewed and there are calls for the remit to be extended. At present, the adjudicator vets the actions of the 10 major supermarkets, each with a turnover of more than £1 billion.

UFU talk milk prices

Talking down milk prices is bad for industry says UFU

............................................................................................................................................................................................... By Chris McCullough Milk prices in Northern Ireland should be on their way up, according to the Ulster Farmers Union, and should not be talked down. The UFU is responding to claims that prices could dip down to 12 pence per litre and warned that now is not the time to add to the “mood of gloom.” Despite the confidence from the UFU that things are improving, some dairy farmers in Scotland say their prices could fall to 10 pence per litre. Ulster Farmers Union president, Ian Marshall, said the rest of the year would be no worse than where prices currently stand.

34 | May 2016 | AgriNews

However, the UFU recently raised concerns that prices for April milk could dip to 14.5 pence per litre. Mr Marshall said: “There are some signs that prices are stabilising. Current signals would indicate that the rest of the year will bring no worse than where we are now, and by the autumn some improvement. “That will not be as speedy or as dramatic as we need, but we need to set our sights on the reality that all markets eventually recover. We need to then ensure we make the changes needed to avoid this short boom, long bust cycle in the future.” The president said that while there had been some claims elsewhere that prices could hit

historic lows, these related to situations where farmers were losing contracts because of changes along the supply chain and that there are no indications this would be the case in a Northern Ireland context. He added: “While things have been bad here farmers have not been forced into that dire position. If we look at our major commodities, thanks to slightly stronger global markets and the weakening of sterling, returns in relation to the milk price are outside the danger zone, and hopefully we can build on that.” While indicating that there had been small price increases in the New Zealand Fonterra auctions which in turn affects global prices, Mr Marshall said new ways to tackle long term price volatility have to be found. He said: “This is why we are holding a conference next month with Dairy UK. We need to find structures and ways to reduce exposure to markets that will remain volatile, even when the present downturn ends. “We need to focus on those, rather than on short term solutions that cannot deliver better prices, but which only add to the sense of despair farming families have experienced for too long,” he added. The UFU have also called on milk processors to think long and hard about the implications for farmer confidence if they are considering March and April milk price reductions. The farmers group said it had heard that one processor was considering dropping its base price by a penny a litre for both March and April which would mean a price as low as 14.50 pence per litre for April milk.

New structure deal

New deal structure between Lakeland & Fane Valley confirmed

............................................................................................................................................................................................... By Chris McCullough A previous joint deal arrangement between Lakeland Dairies and Fane Valley co-ops has been scrapped in favour of a new one. A final deal has been confirmed by the two that see Lakeland Dairies take over the Fane Valley dairy business sited in Banbridge in County Down effective immediately. The original plan was for the two companies to merge in a joint venture but this new structure is said to “be in the better interests of the milk suppliers.” This simplified deal is considered to be a better option than the originally proposed strategic joint ventures, announced previously in August 2015, which would have involved both the dairy and agribusiness interests of the respective businesses. Michael Hanley, chief executive of Lakeland Dairies Co-operative, said: “The strategic rationale behind Lakeland Dairies and Fane Valley co-operating to advance the interests of their respective businesses is as strong today as it was in August 2015. “It is extremely positive that the Boards of both co-operatives have had the foresight to recognise the limitations of the initially proposed joint venture arrangements and the courage to adapt and revise their approach. “The current market environment is undoubtedly challenging both for producers and processors. However, we have a strong ambition, in Lakeland, to further strengthen our position in global markets as a leading provider of high quality foodservice products and dairy food ingredients. “The agreement we have reached with our neighbouring co-operative, Fane Valley, represents a major step forward for the industry and for Lakeland Dairies, albeit not via the structure initially envisaged. “The move will reinforce our continuing commitment to pay the highest possible milk price to all our milk producers through continuing innovation,

efficiency and excellence in everything we do. “Producers with queries on the new arrangements are encouraged to contact their usual farm liaison officer who will be pleased to provide further information.” Trevor Lockhart, chief executive of Fane Valley Cooperative said: “Fane Valley and Lakeland Dairies are absolutely convinced that the interests of their respective milk suppliers will be better served in a combined business which can deliver greater economies of scale and enhanced market capability. “The option to deliver this through a joint venture model has been the subject of an in depth assessment by both co-operatives working closely together for eight months. “In the end, it was evident that some of the complexities involved in establishing and operating a cross-border joint venture of this nature were going to detract from the key strategic purpose of the merger and the ability to fully realise all commercial synergies. “Accordingly, Fane Valley has opted not to take up a shareholding in Lakeland Dairies Co-operative Society as was intended in the original joint venture proposal. “The principal goal of Fane Valley has been to create a dairy business which is better positioned to deliver maximum returns to milk suppliers in the years ahead. Recognising this, the Board has decided to focus its attention on supporting Lakeland to drive forward the expanded dairy business. “Our collective priority over the coming months will be to achieve the successful transition and integration of the Fane Valley dairy business within Lakeland Dairies. “In view of the importance of this task we have decided that the proposed agribusiness joint venture would prove a distraction from the main goal, and that will not be advanced.”

Priced from £13,332, this top model has two variants below it but all are built around pretty much the same chassis and running gear. First, there is the entry level 50hp Defender HD8 Base, with a near £8K sticker price, and second the HD8 DPS. Priced at £9,832, this model has an enhanced specification to include DPS power steering, a locking rear differential and tyres on alloy rims (See specifications for more detail). These machines are full-size UTVs, measuring 1,575mm across without mudguard extensions and boasting a 454kg capacity cargo bed. The latter is 1,384mm wide by 965mm long with 305mm deep sides. Defender HD10 models come with three separate seats, the driver’s having reach adjustment, the two passenger units folding up to allow the cab floor area to be used for ‘cargo’. The central seat backrest can be flipped to provide a cup holding armrest, with a large removable 6.3 litre storage box resting under the outer passenger seat. The HD10 models are fitted with really ‘grippy’ Maxxis Bighorn 2.0 tyres that proved well up to

dealing with deep muck. Can-Am lists all models as having the same 280mm ground clearance which we found was enough to cope with some impressively deep ruts. At no time did the Defender feel like it would get stuck and it certainly had the power to cope with some demanding conditions and steep terrain. Just remember to select all-wheel drive and, for really stiff going, lock the rear differential, and the Defender will cover pretty much the same terrain as an ATV. Can-Am fit an electronically controlled Hill Descent Control that is designed to keep the transmission drive belt engaged and so linked to the engine. Down steep slopes the system is claimed to provide some engine braking but it does ‘let go’ in really steep going, so you will need to use the brakes. The latter work well and proved easy to modulate so at no time did the vehicle feel like it was going to slide out of control. Once you are used to how the Defender operates in hilly terrain, using the brakes and low ratio as appropriate becomes second nature with no concerns over stability or safety. The transmission has the familiar park, high, low, neutral and reverse positions. We did miss having a conventional ‘parking brake’ but Can-Am have to abide by regulations in some countries that dictate the vehicle has to be taken out of drive when stopped and the driver leaves the seat. This makes getting out to open gates a bit more of a hassle than it could be but at least there is a good reason why no handbrake is fitted. The DPS power steering helped ensure the HD10 was remarkably agile for its size, being able to swiftly twirl between full lock and so helping to exploit all the agility on offer. The steering was perhaps a bit on the light side but it was

good over rough ground with no tendency to kick-back. One option fitted to the test HD10 was an electro-hydraulic tipping ram for the load platform. Although full tilt is achieved at a somewhat slow pace, having an assisted tipping body is really useful. Further, the body can be left up after a hose down. You can also access the engine and transmission easier, using a hose to remove the muck that finds its way, unguarded, in from the wheels to the transmission and engine bay. Sliding in and out of the cab was easy, Can-Am having built in ample space between the screen and ‘B’ pillars. Combine this with cut offs on the seat bolster corners and getting in and out has to be as easy as it gets although the safety extension rail from on the B pillar on the driver’s side did get in the way at times. Although we have yet to try it, we would suggest the HD8 DPS could be the pick of the range as it appears to offer all you need power wise but without the price of the HD10. Whatever the case, the Defender UTV series seems to have got the basics dead right. Even fuel use did not prove excessive. This was particularly the case when using the Defender in the third of its operating modes. A dash rocker switch lets the operator choose between Work, Normal and Eco modes. The latter pegs performance to enhance economy. The downside is you do notice a drop in performance but the plus is for general running around Eco mode does really trim fuel use. By how much? As a guess between 10 and 20%. Work mode also cuts power to limit the vehicles speed but also allows for better all terrain go than when in Eco mode.

Car of the year 2016

New Tiguan is the all-wheel drive car of the year 2016

............................................................................................................................................................................................... *Readers of Auto Bild Allrad choose their favourites *Winner in the category "Offroad vehicle and SUV up to 30,000 Euro" Wolfsburg, 14 April 2016 – Readers of Auto Bild Allrad, Europe's largest magazine for off-road vehicles, have named the new Tiguan "All-wheel Car of the Year". The successful compact SUV from Volkswagen received the award in the category "Off-road vehicle and SUV up to 30,000 Euro". Since its market launch in 2007, the Tiguan has now won the coveted title of "All- wheel Car of the Year" five times. For many years, the Tiguan has been an important pillar of the Volkswagen product lineup. Since 2007, more than 2.8 million have been sold in over 170 markets worldwide, making the popular compact SUV into a best-seller. With the new Tiguan,

Volkswagen intends to continue the success. The new design is now even more elegant, with a design radiating both power and confidence. At the same time, the interioris more generous compared with the predecessor and the infotainment offering has been extended. The new Tiguan shines with a new range of eight engines from 115 PS/85 kW up to 240 PS/176 kW* – all more powerful and more economical than their predecessors – including four standard engines equipped with 4MOTION all-wheel drive. Several pioneering safety and assistance systems are available on the new Tiguan. They include Front Assist with City Emergency Braking and an integrated Pedestrian Monitoring; Lane Assist, a proactive occupant protection; and an active bonnet to protect pedestrians and cyclists. But the many minor details all pursue the aim of

making driving and travelling more pleasurable. Finally, there is also a new optional range of ergo Active seats, a lowered load sill and an "Easy Open and Close" system which makes loading and unloading much easier. *Tiguan 2.0 TDI SCR BMT (110 kW/150 PS) fuel consumption in l/100 km: 5.6 – 4.7 (combined), CO2 emission in g/km: 147 - 123 (combined); efficiency class: B – A *Tiguan 2.0 TDI SCR 4Motion BMT (140 kW/190 PS) fuel consumption in l/100 km: 5.7 (combined), CO2 emission in g/ km: 149; efficiency class: B Tiguan 2.0 TSI 4Motion BMT (132 kW/180 PS) fuel consumption in l/100km: 7.3 (combined), CO2 emission ing/km: 168; efficiency class: D
