Mitsubishi Outlander - Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle. Free motoring for Mother who installed solar panels to charge her Outlander PHEV

............................................................................................................................................................................................... CIRENCESTER – A mum-of-two from Christchurch is enjoying free motoring, thanks to the installation of solar panels on her home to power her Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV). Roz Drinkwater doesn’t pay a penny for the electricity she uses during the day, which means she can charge her PHEV and drive without having to pay for fuel. The family-sized SUV uses both electric and petrol power. Unlike non plug-in hybrid vehicles, the Outlander PHEV can travel substantially further on battery power – 32.5 miles – more than enough to accommodate Roz’s journeys, whether it’s the school-run, weekly shop or visiting her mum. Roz said: “There’s plenty of battery power to do everything I need to do. I just stick it on charge when I get home and I never need to go to a petrol station. It’s brilliant, I absolutely love it. Even if you take away how economical it is, I would still love the car. It doesn’t feel

like you’re driving an electric car, it’s really comfortable.” The impressive electric range of the PHEV gives the vehicle significant environmental credentials. It emits just 44g/km of CO2 and the official combined fuel consumption figure is 148mpg. Roz bought the vehicle from Poole Mitsubishi in July and has only filled it up once since then. The solar panels on the family home are on a 20-year lease and as part of the deal, their electricity is free during the daytime. “I’m literally running it for free,” said Roz, who has an 11-year-old son and 15-year-old daughter. “There’s no road tax because of how environmentally friendly it is and I’m not paying for charging it. It’s fantastic.” Roz added: “It’s the perfect car for me. It’s got great boot space for all the children’s stuff and the dog. It blends the practicality and economy with space and comfort. It’s great.”

New Holland Agriculture - World Record

New Holland Agriculture smashes the current GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title for most wheat harvested within eight hours with the CR10.90 combine

............................................................................................................................................................................................... • •

Record breaking performance: 797.656 tonnes in 8 hours The record-breaking CR10.90. Packed with advanced harvesting technology.

New Holland Agriculture has reclaimed the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title, harvesting an impressive 797.656 tonnes of wheat in eight hours with the world’s most powerful combine: the 653hp CR10.90. “We are extremely proud to have recaptured the Guinness World Records title for harvesting almost 800 tonnes of wheat in eight hours, shattering the previous record by more than 120 tonnes,” stated Hedley Cooper, Head of Harvesting Product Management. “This record demonstrates the unsurpassed capacity and productivity of the CR10.90, especially as the current record of 675.84 tonnes was broken after just six hours and 36 minutes!”

Record breaking performance The record was set on 15th August 2014 at HR Bourn and Sons Farm in Grange de Lings, near Wragby, Lincolnshire, United Kingdom. The field was sown with Santiago wheat in the autumn of 2013 before it was chosen in May 2014 for the record breaking attempt, which meant that it represented real world growing conditions. The record breaking day’s harvesting, which started at 11:17am, was characterised by changing weather conditions, with the ambient temperature ranging from 18-21°C and light showers occurring from 17:30pm onwards. The CR10.90’s average throughput was 99.7 tonnes/hour and peaked at 135 tonnes/hour in a crop yielding an average of 9.95 tonnes/ha and an average moisture content of 16.2%. The record was achieved using a mere 1.12 litres of fuel per tonne of grain harvested, with the straw chopper engaged throughout the day. The entire day’s activities were overseen and

verified by Mr Pravin Patel, the official GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS Record Adjudicator, who was assisted by Alan Robson, Chaplain for Agriculture of Lincolnshire as the second independent witness. The record-breaking CR10.90. Packed with advanced harvesting technology The record-breaking CR10.90 is equipped with New Holland’s unique Twin Rotor® technology featuring Twin Pitch High Performance rotors combined with the Dynamic Feed Roll™ system (DFR), which proved indispensable in breaking the record especially as the weather conditions deteriorated in the late afternoon. Powered by the award-winning Cursor 16 engine, which develops some 653hp, the CR10.90 is also compliant with the Tier 4B emissions regulations, using advanced ECOBlue™ HI-eSCR technology to meet them. Traction, in the changeable conditions, was guaranteed thanks to the unique SmartTrax™ rubber track system with Terraglide™ suspension. The extra-long 10 metre unloading auger and super-fast 142 litres/minute unloading speed made quick work of the constantly filling grain tank. The CR10.90 was also equipped with IntelliSteer™ fully integrated auto guidance, which ensures accuracy of 1-2 cm optimising the effectiveness of the 13.7 metre 840CD draper-header during every pass, the whole day long. “The Guinness World Records title has further reinforced the CR10.90 combine as New Holland’s flagship harvesting product, and cemented its position as the world’s leading combine harvester,” stated Carlo Lambro, Brand President of New Holland Agriculture. “The record-breaking combine, built in our Centre of Harvesting Excellence in Zedelgem, Belgium, is the world’s first Class 10 rotary combine and exemplifies the excellence of Twin Rotor® technology, developed by New Holland 40 years ago. We are offering our customers the best possible solutions and continually improving our Brand’s performance and results in the combine business.”

News from Bobcat

Zero Tail Swing Bobcat E20 compact excavator features retractable undercarriage and improved cab design

............................................................................................................................................................................................... Bobcat Company has introduced its new Zero Tail Swing (ZTS) E20 compact excavator, which can handle the toughest jobs in confined spaces. The 13.9-horsepower model features a retractable undercarriage, unmatched cab comfort, increased uptime protection, attachment readiness and an ease of serviceability, all of which provide operators with an excavator unlike any other. The Bobcat® E20 replaces the 324 excavator model and features an automatic slew brake. Available as options are auto-shift drive and a fingertip auxiliary boom swing control. The new Tier 4-compliant E20 stands above the competition in the 2-metric-ton class of compact excavators. It has a maximum reach of 14 feet, dig depth of 8 feet 6 inches and dump height of 8 feet 8 inches. With the E20 the rear of the house stays within the width of the tracks through full rotation, allowing operators to work flush against a structure to help minimize damaging nearby objects. Working with the jobsite

6 | Agri News | November 2014 |

One major feature of the E20 is its retractable rubber track undercarriage. When the undercarriage is fully retracted, the overall width is reduced from 53½ inches to 39 inches — making the E20 an ideal choice for traveling through gates or next to property lines. The E20’s undercarriage is 5½ inches longer than the 324 excavator model, which provides enhanced trenching capabilities, especially when working over the rear of the excavator.

Improved cab design Unique to the E20 is a new, roomier cab design that gives the operator excellent visibility to the attachment and the working area. Bobcat already provides the largest cabs with the most spacious cab openings in the industry to increase operator comfort, and operators will continue to see these same features in the E20. An easy-to-open front window and lower portal window, along with a redesigned heater are included with the optional enclosed cab.

Vicon RV5200 Launch

New Range of Variable Chamber Balers for The 2015 season

............................................................................................................................................................................................... Vicon is to strengthen its position in the baler market with a new range of variable chamber round balers that deliver a huge step forward in terms of reliability and output. Badged RV5200 series, the new models comprise the RV5216 and RV5220, which replace the previous generation RV4216 and RV4220 balers. Capable of producing bales with diameters of up to 1.65m and 2.0m respectively, the RV5216 and RV5220 are equipped with five endless belts and use a closed chamber system that affords immediate bale starting. Key changes found on this latest generation of variable chamber balers is the development of an allnew net wrap system, plus a new software package for easier selection of bale density. Called PowerBind, Vicon’s latest net system uses fewer components and eliminates the need for feed-in rollers. This latest system has been engineered to avoid interference from external factors such as wind and crop. “Net is fed directly into the bale chamber using the PowerBind arm, which maintains net tension at all times and delivers accurate and repeatable accuracy with consistent net injection,” explains Mike Howell, product

manager for Vicon grass equipment. When the bale is 90 per cent complete, the PowerBind arm moves forward, in preparation to inject net. This functionality adds to reliability and productivity, simply by eliminating time the bale might need to pick up the net. As a result, PowerBind provides one of the fastest net wrap processes available, which means less time spent tying and more time spent baling. PowerBind also offers an extremely low loading height - to replace an empty roll, simply swing out its retaining shaft and install a new roll of net. Redesigned roll storage now puts both spare net rolls adjacent to the Powerbind system, making roll swaps easy and convenient.

Synkro 3030 Multiline Pottinger’s Latest All-Rounder

............................................................................................................................................................................................... The new MULTILINE series from PÖTTINGER creates true all-rounders. Last year, PÖTTINGER successfully combined the TERRADISC compact disc harrow with the seed drill. This year the same recipe for success has been applied to the SYNKRO stubble cultivator. The result is a cost-effective, high-performance range of equipment that enables sensational flexibility during operation. Used solo or in a combination, the new SYNKRO MULTILINE promises enormous potential. Stubble cultivators are always in demand: especially in times of high plant protection costs and various legislation on protecting the water table, effective stubble cultivation makes a significant contribution to sustainable cultivation and long-term yield. The MULTILINE concept takes the range of applications offered by the SYNKRO 3030 to a whole new level. Fitted with the 585 rubber-packer roller, the SYNKRO can be combined with a PÖTTINGER seed drill. The lifting system works in the same way as the TERRADISC, which has already gained huge acceptance on the market. The machine is trailed using a drawbar attached to Cat. III lower linkages, so it is also suitable for smaller tractors. The SYNKRO MULTILINE can be operated conveniently using the most straightforward tractor set-up. Combined with the seed drill, it offers an ideal alternative to conventional mulch seed drills. The weight of the machine is borne by the packer roller. Only the supported load acts on the tractor. This means that it is possible to use the machine

without front ballast. Harmful compaction at the headland is greatly reduced as a result: the new SYNKRO MULTILINE features excellent ground conservation technology and sustainability to guarantee long-term yield. The machine is raised using the rubber packer roller and hinged drawbar to provide ground clearance of 250 mm. A doubleacting spool valve is required to lift the stubble cultivator/seed drill combination. The SYNKRO 3030 MULTILINE is available with scalloped concave discs, not with tines. VITASEM A or VITASEM ADD seed drills are installed as standard above the packer roller. This allows the seed drill to be fitted or removed easily depending on whether the trailed stubble cultivator is to be used on its own or not. As a result, the SYNKRO MULTILINE is a real multi-talent with a wide range of applications. In the field and during road transport the machine runs on the rubber packer roller, which is divided into 2 sections with a central support. This ensures smooth running and optimum stability during transport. Because the roller is divided it does not leave behind any smear marks at the headland - a feature that is very much appreciated by users. The critical issue of compaction at headlands is something that the SYNKRO MULTILINE has well under control. In addition to improving seed germination conditions, wear on the road is also minimised to extend the service life of the roller - a true all-rounder on the road and in the field.

Väderstad’s legendary Rapid seed drill has been reborn to suit modern agriculture. Rapid 300-400C/S has a new design, with a more streamlined hopper that is raised slightly above the chassis, increasing access to the machine. This, together with greaseless hubs, makes it easier to service and use, while freeing up more time for work in the field. What’s new with Rapid 300-400C/S? New design of the entire machine New hydraulic metering system that allows the farmer to set a variable seed rate Farmers can now choose control system: ISOBUS or E-Control and compatibility with GPS Maintenance free bearings, saving time for farmers A choice of mechanical or hydraulic following harrow With Väderstad E-Services, Rapid is ready for the future “With the introduction of Wi-Fi and iPad Air, the Rapid machine and other equipment can be guided with the help of wireless communication. User-friendliness, cost-effectiveness and easy of update are just some of the major advantages with the iPad Air solution compared with previous systems” said Lars Thylén, Concept Manager for Rapid. Väderstad’s control solutions have been gathered together under the family name Väderstad E-Services and include E-Control, an ISOBUS solution and ControlStation. Rapid can also be connected to an ordinary GPS system, allowing farmers to use this seed drill with high precision and minimum cost. New maintenance-free hubs Rapid has been fitted with new greaseless hubs, i.e. factory-lubricated. This has dramatically reduced the number of grease points. The new bearings also have a longer life. The result is better operating economics and more time in the field. More flexible following harrow Rapid C/S is equipped with a new following harrow that has a better lift height and optional functions. “There is a mechanical and a hydraulic following harrow. With the hydraulic version, the pressure can be adjusted from the tractor cab on the go. For example, a certain pressure can be used in the actual field and a different pressure on headlands” explained Lars Thylén. Rapid 2015 - The Rebirth of A Legend!

Amazone PI Pantera 4502 New Pantera 4502-H with a ground clearance of 1.7 m

............................................................................................................................................................................................... With its ground clearance of 1.2 m, Amazone’s Pantera self-propelled sprayer is ideally suited to most operational situations in plant production. For treating tall maize crops or in sunflowers, however, an even larger ground clearance is required to avoid plant damage. For such applications Amazone now offers, as an option, a hydraulic height adjustment for the chassis. All machines featuring this height adjustment are designated as the Pantera 4502-H. By just pressing a button on the on-board

Amazone is the harvest to harvest specialist and caters for all farm sizes and budgets 6 Lochside Road,Forfar, Angus, DD8 3JE 01307 462281 | bob.murray@agricar.co.uk | www.agricar.co.uk

computer, the driver can lift the entire machine up to a ground clearance of 1.7 m. If the machine is in its lifted position, its track width can be adjusted between 2.1 and 2.6 m. In this way the Pantera 4502-H, despite its higher centre of gravity, proves to be highly stable and at the same time can be flexibly utilised in a variety of crops and track width spacings. One unique characteristic of the Amazone solution is that it maintains its still very wide track width range. So, in normal operation where only 1.25 m ground clearance is required, the track width of the machine can be adjusted from 1.8 to 2.4 m. However, especially for agricultural contractors who wish to offer flexible crop protection services over a greater variety of customers and crops, they are able to operate at narrower track widths in areas with smaller field sizes. With the Pantera 4502-H, the scope for crop protection applications is significantly extended and thus increases the machine's capacity. Steering system with row scanning Especially in hilly terrain, and on long working days, the driver needs to keep the highest concentration levels to always precisely steer the lifted machine through the crop rows. To solve this problem, Amazone, in co-operation with the company Reichhardt, offers the pre-installation for a row sensing system. The system operates with sensor ‘fingers’ which the driver can swivel out from underneath the machine by pressing a button. These ‘fingers’ scan along the crop rows and control the automatic steering system exactly in such a way that the wheels of the Pantera travel in between the crop rows. The highly precise system prevents any damage to the crop and relieves the stress on the driver; enabling him to concentrate on all other

The Fastrac 4000 Series

Tractor range writes a new chapter in the JCB Fastrac success Story

............................................................................................................................................................................................... A new chapter in the JCB Fastrac success story begins this autumn when production of the all-new Fastrac 4000 Series tractors gets underway. Set to enter a highly competitive sector with class-leading features and specification, the Fastrac 4000 promises to raise the bar for productivity, utilisation and driver appeal. “Our engineers have worked long and hard to develop this new Fastrac, which stays true to the original concept in layout and versatility but moves the game on as far as performance and capabilities are concerned,” said Richard Fox-Marrs, Managing Director, JCB Agriculture. “Compared with the outgoing 2000 Series, the new tractors are more powerful but more economical, stronger but more nimble, and more versatile yet easier to operate.” The all-new Fastrac 4000 Series draws on 25 years of experience and expertise in the design, development and manufacture of the world’s most versatile and comfortable tractor. It builds on core Fastrac features such as multiple implement mounting points, sophisticated all-round suspension for fast operational speeds, and a high-specification braking system for safety, stability and comfort. Four-wheel steering is available again but with a tighter turning circle and selectable steering ratio, and bigger tyres improve flotation and traction. A more sophisticated suspension system can provide side-to-side self-levelling as well as front and rear, and the ability to ‘squat’ under demountable equipment for quicker and easier implement change-over. The hydraulics system is new as well, delivering higher oil flows in a more efficient manner to handle demanding implements, and with electronic spool valves providing finger-tip control and both timer and flow functions adjustable from within the cab. There is also more power, of course, up to 235hp (max) from the range-leading Fastrac 4220 and with a new means of transmitting it to the wheels. The CVT transmission provides seamless acceleration and deceleration, the finest possible speed adjustment, and selectable modes that help the operator optimise performance and fuel economy. New styling apart, the most visible change to the smallest Fastrac in the range is the cab: the COMMAND PLUS design provides all the space, visibility, comfort and control features a driver could want.

The range Three new Fastrac 4000 Series models will be available, all powered by a 6.6-litre six-cylinder AGCO Power engine that meets latest Euro Stage 4 / US Tier 4 Final exhaust emissions rules using proven, fuel-efficient SCR technology. In the Fastrac 4160, it delivers 160hp at 2100rpm rated speed with up to 175hp available when the engine’s full performance potential is exploited under load. The Fastrac 4190 is next with 189hp rated, and 208hp max; and the Fastrac 4220 sets new performance levels with 217hp at rated speed, 235hp maximum. Optional additions to the standard specification include four-wheel steering, GPS guidance, a double-acting version of the self-levelling suspension and a comprehensive package of powerful LED worklights. Options for the COMMAND PLUS cab include a roof window, cool box, MP3 player and Bluetooth radio for hands-free mobile phone use, and a deluxe suspension seat. Speed and utilisation While the new and improved features of the Fastrac 4000 are impressive in their own right, it is their combined impact that gives the machine a true performance edge over conventional tractors. “The Fastrac 4000 is designed from the outset to operate implements front and rear, and to make productive use of the rear deck area behind the cab,” Richard Fox-Marrs pointed out. “Carrying an extra 2.5 tonnes of seed or fertiliser has a significant impact on productivity; the same goes for increased spray tank capacity. “If you add in the productivity gains from fast road travel and being able to execute sweeping headland turns 40% quicker than a three-point turn for ploughing and cultivation, then we soon get to saving a significant number of days over year.” Power transmission and braking The new CVT transmission ensures optimum use of power and torque, with seamless acceleration and power delivery, ideal speeds for every situation, and ultra-fine speed control for top-quality work with soil-engaging and other implements.

Bauer on farm bedding production Using undigested forage fibres as a bedding material for cow cubicles on British farms

...............................................................................................................................................................................................

With more than 50 Green Bedding systems and a BRU 1000 installed on farms in Great Britain, Bauer has more experience of on-farm cubicle bedding production than any supplier of slurry management equipment. “We’ve installed Green Bedding separators on farms with just 120 cows and almost 1700 cows, with a herd size of 200-400 cows being the most common,” says Adrian Tindall, Bauer UK and Ireland sales manager. “Users are delighted with the technique; they report increased cow lying times, which can translate into increased milk yield, and fewer ailments such as hock abrasions. They also like the way cows bedded on this material come into the parlour cleaner. Other big attractions are the cost savings and the lack of hassle over sourcing and delivery compared with the use of bought-in bedding materials such as sand and sawdust. “But the main focus is on cow comfort and well-being,” says Mr Tindall. “Instead of rationing bedding material to keep costs down and to ensure supplies hold-out until the next delivery, dairymen can be generous with their daily supply of home-produced bedding to provide cows with comfortable cubicle beds.” Nor have they seen any cause for concern regarding pathogens and mastitis: “Producers have experienced either stable or reductions in cell counts, with some users also reporting a drop in mastitis cases after installing a Green Bedding or BRU system,” he says. Richard Threlfell, Cumbria Since switching from sawdust to Green Bedding, hock problems have become a thing of the past at Plumpton Head, Penrith where Richard Threlfell, his wife and parents run the Crossfield herd of pedigree Holstein cattle. “I was happy using sawdust until I came across this lovely soft bedding material and discovered I could

16 | Agri News | November 2014 |

produce it on the farm,” says Richard. “We were spending £1500-£1800 a month through the winter when the cows are housed indoors; now, the bedding is effectively free because we’d separate anyway to make slurry management easier.” With a virtually limitless supply available, the cows enjoy four times as much bedding material as before and are happy to lie for longer periods. “I had 70 bulling heifers in when I first used it and expected to see at least 10 to 15 of them running around, wasting energy,” says Richard. “But when I looked in a bit later every animal was lying down; it just seems too good to be true sometimes!” Steve Bennett, Wiltshire Dried sawdust, recycled MDF powder and gypsum have been used to supplement rubber cubicle mats at Tockenham Court Farm near Wootton Bassett, where Steve Bennett runs a 300-cow dairy herd. But after replacing a basic slurry separator with a Green Bedding unit from Bauer to produce bedding material on-farm, improvements were seen almost immediately. “The cows cleaned up no end, definitely as clean as cows on sand, and the number of mastitis cases dropped dramatically,” he reports. “Swollen hocks on older cows, even ones in their eighth and ninth lactation, have gone down too.” While cell counts and bactoscan levels have remained constant, he says the cows’ teats are cleaner and therefore milking is a lot quicker. “What’s great about this system is the fact that the material is free, after the initial investment, and is in abundance,” Steve adds. “Then the biggest difference in cost comes from the improved health benefits and the reduced costs of drugs and treatments to cure ailments from poor bedding.”

Technical Development Kioti Mechron

For Automatic GPS Section Control This is the go-anywhere, do-anyon Slurry Spreading Tool thing Kioti Mechron

...............................................................................................................................................................................................

The definition of the "Task Controller – Section Control" ISO standard has opened the door to an efficient management of plant protective agents, seeds, fertilizers, etc. Since JOSKIN has always been considering slurry as a fertilizer, it proposes now to apply this standard to its slurry injectors and spreading booms, which are now able to open/close the different sections individually. The ISO Section Control standardized function allows "to automatically manage the spreading widths, e.g. for sprayers, fertilizer spreaders and precision sowing machines, according to the GPS position and the desired overlapping degree". In other words, any GPS that can send "Section Control" standardized GPS data to the "IsoBus" standardized data bus can be used to control the sections of any tool, provided that it is controlled by an IsoBus application. JOSKIN has been proposing the IsoBus control on its slurry spreaders for many years and it has already fitted 200 machines with this system. Its IsoBus application can now be extended to the "Section Control" standard to automatically open/close the different sections of a slurry injector or spreading boom combined to the spreader itself. An outer GPS antenna sends the position signal according to the Section Control standard and the IsoBus application compares it with the previously recorded positions in order to close the sections on areas which have already been fertilized. Within the framework of ever more precise controls of the ammonia losses linked to spreadings, such a device will certainly achieve an increasing success to meet the legal requirements: overlaps are in this way avoided, notably in adjacent lines, headlands, corners and when getting around obstacles.

National Sprayer Testing Scheme The Importance of Sprayer Testing – Duncan Russell NSTS Manager.

............................................................................................................................................................................................... Everyone will agree that accurate application of pesticides is not only desirable but essential whether for the environmental, the consumer or the grower point of view. Accurate and targeted use of pesticides is all part of modern agriculture. That’s why back in the mid 90’s the Chemical Application members of the Agricultural Engineers Association (AEA) devised a test for application machinery to make sure it was working as intended and with a qualified operator would apply pesticides accurately and on target. In the early years of 2000 this test became the National Sprayer Testing Scheme as one of the main pillars of the Voluntary Initiative. Now NSTS is an accepted part of arable agriculture and requirement of the major crop assurance schemes and supermarket protocols, requiring that farmers and growers have their sprayers inspected annually. Testing pesticide application equipment is soon to become even more important as the Sustainable Use Directive requires that all pesticide application equipment is tested by 26th November 2016. The NSTS is available through a network of test centres who have qualified examiners available

to inspect and confirm the equipment is of the standard required. The test is usually carried out at the owner’s premises at a mutually agreed convenient time. The examiner will charge for the inspection, NSTS have no input into the cost of individual tests; the cost being commercial at the point of use. Additionally machine owners are free to choose their nearest or preferred test centre a list of test centres can be found on the NSTS website www.nsts.org.uk As confirmation of the result of the test the examiner will apply a pass sticker to the machine and give the owner a copy of the test report form. Other copies of the form are returned to NSTS Administration where the information is retained on a database of all tested machines. This information is available to crop assurance Certification Bodies for verification. Having an NSTS test ensures that the machine is working correctly and capable of delivering the correct dose on target. It also helps to reduce costly downtime and ensures reliability of an important piece of equipment used by farmers and growers. For more details of NSTS visit the website www. nsts.org.uk

News From Datatag & Cesar Tracker helps police recover stolen plant

............................................................................................................................................................................................... As the latest figures from NFU Mutual show that cost of rural crime in the UK in 2013 was £44.5m – up 5.2% on the previous years. TRACKER, the UK’s leading stolen plant and agricultural recovery provider, has helped police stem the tide by preventing a rash of plant thefts in counties across England. All four cases were recovered within 24 hours of the TRACKER device being activated, highlighting the value of stolen vehicle recovery (SVR) technology as a way for plant owners to protect their assets from criminals. In April, a Manitou tele-handler was stolen from Gloucestershire and recovered in Warwickshire, the very next day, thanks to TRACKER’s revolutionary technology leading police to its location. The stolen item was located along with approximately 20 other items, which may also have been stolen, resulting in the identification of a suspect now wanted by police. In June, TRACKER played a key role in helping police across several counties locate and recover stolen machinery. A mini digger was stolen from Northamptonshire and police found it the next day, hidden in an industrial unit in Bedfordshire. Similarly, a John Deere ride-on lawn mower was stolen in Berkshire, but luckily it was fitted with TRACKER, allowing police to follow the signal and locate the missing mower, which was hidden in a horse trailer in Surrey. “For all these plant and machinery owners, investing in TRACKER technology has proved

invaluable,” explains Adrian Davenport, Police Liaison Manager for TRACKER. “Without the protection of an SVR unit, stolen plant machinery may never be found, if it’s sold abroad or broken down for parts. Losing valuable plant can hit a business with replacement costs, as well as increased insurance premiums. “TRACKER has a unique relationship with the UK’s police forces, ensuring we can help them recover stolen property, no matter where the thieves go. These four cases clearly show how quickly recoveries can happen, once a TRACKER unit is activated, sending a clear message to criminals.” When a Caterpillar item of plant machinery was stolen from Berkshire, TRACKER technology helped police recover it from North Hampshire, just six hours later. The National Plant & Equipment Register reports that plant theft costs the UK around £1 million every week, with 95 per cent of stolen plant equipment never being recovered each year. However, 95% of stolen vehicles fitted with TRACKER are returned to their owners and 86% of these are recovered within 24hrs. TRACKER also supports CESAR, the Construction Equipment Security & Registration Scheme supported by the government and major players in the industry. NFU members can also save up to £125 off TRACKER products

Don't Let Rural Crime Disrupt Your Farm Business tractor in field Protect your machinery with TRACKER, the UK's no.1 stolen vehicle recovery company. Plant and agricultural theft is an ever-present problem in the UK, so it's important to protect your assets against crime and the inconveniences that come with vehicle theft. 65% of stolen plant is never recovered, so protect your agricultural machinery with TRACKER.

Steve Birchall Poultry House Services

On Effective Poultry House Cleaning

............................................................................................................................................................................................... Industry developments and pressure from the supply chain are turning the spotlight on more efficient cleaning units as a way to increase performance while reducing antibiotics use. The packers and retailers are demanding, less dependance on the use of antibiotics to control disease so producers need to respond to this. To control disease and maintain production, the industry has to explore and adopt alternative ways to reduce the pathogen risk to birds. Better hygiene practices, based on more efficient cleaning of housing and equipment combined with strict biosecurity is an obvious starting point. It is entirely logical to get buildings as clean as possible before repopulating them to reuce the diease threat before the new birds arrive. New stock are under stress brought about by combination factors including transport, handling, vaccination and being exposed to new diease threats. The more that can be done to reduce diease threats, the better. There is a real scope to improve the effectiveness of cleaning of all types of poultry housing but the starting point is a change of mind set. Too many producers regard cleaning as a “must do”, uninteresting and mundane chore, something that has to be done and the sooner it is done the better, however, nothing could be further than the truth. Cleaning should be seen as an intergral part of a production system which can have a significant impact on performance, costs and profit. An efficient well planned and implemented cleaning procedure can reduce the diease threat to birds leading to better performance. It can also save time and reduce costs. An effective routine comprises of two distinct interrelated stages - cleaning and disinfection. Cleaning is essential to remove the environment in which pathogens thrive and to expose them to the subsiquent disinfectant. You can not disinfect dirt

and unless soiling is removed the pathogens will be protected from the disinfectant. The cleaning phase is crucial but this is not a case of taking an ardent approach with a high pressure power washer. While you can blast away some soiling, you will not remove the fats and proteins which make up much of the dirt on the walls and other surfaces. In addition, the use of high pressure creates an aerosol effect which can actuallly spread the pathogens and make problems worse. To achieive an effecive clean it is essential to apply a detergent and then to rinse away under low pressure followed by the application of disinfectant. Effective cleaning will help provent the economic loss associated with outbreaks and is considerably cheaper than the cost of treating an outbreak with medicines. Using chemical detergents ensures that soiling is removed before disinfection resulting in a reduction in bacterial levels prior to restocking, giving the new birds the best possible start. Thorough cleaning based on a two stage routine could have a big impact on future profits and turn cleaning from a chore into a profit driver.

Royal Welsh Show Things you might not have known about the Royal Welsh Winter Fair

............................................................................................................................................................................................... With fresh air and fine views, home cooked and locally produced food and drink, Farm Stay UK provides our guests the best way to enjoy the British Countryside. Farm Stay UK has been promoting farm accommodation for over 30 years and in that time our guests have spent over £3 billion in the rural economy. As a farmer’s co-operative all of funds go into the direct promotion of our farm accommodation. From this summer, our guests can now also enjoy a brand new state of the art website featuring online availability calendars and booking engine. As we say at Farm Stay “Wake Up To The Country”. There is no better way to start the day. Farm Stay UK was established in 1983 as The Farm Holiday Bureau, with 23 local groups, through the leadership and support provided by ADAS (then fully financed by MAFF, now DEFRA), the Royal Agricultural Society of England (RASE), the National Tourist Boards (inc. the BTA), and the magazine Farmers Weekly. We still work closely with both national and local tourism agencies and currently have over 1000 accommodation businesses. A regional and local structure still exists to this day to promote better co-operation and best practise at a local level. Our members are in all corners of the UK across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Farm Stay Today Farm Stay UK is a “Not-For-Profit” farmer owned consortium, registered under the Industrial & Provident Societies Act. The main objective is to more effectively market the accommodation provided by its members thus helping increase occupancy rates and incomes. Farm Stay UK is the market leader in its field, recognised for its innovation and success within the tourism industry at home and abroad. Quality is regarded as fundamental and all properties must be inspected under the National Tourist Boards accommodation classification and other selected grading schemes. Create in our craft studio, help with our farm animals, ride our Shetland ponies or just relax in our wood burning hot tub, a perfect rural retreat.

Marlbrook Hall B & B offer two spacious rooms atour family run farm. Sample our own produced bacon & sausage for breakfast. We are ideal for exploring North Herefordshire/South Shropshire and we look forward to welcoming you to share our way of life with us.

1. The Winter Fair was initially only going to run as a trial event for three years, to see if it would be viable. However it has been a resounding success from year one and the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society hasn’t looked back since 1990. 2. For the first 12 years the fair was a modest one-day event. It was only after the successful introduction of horses and hounds to the event in 2001 (the year of the foot and mouth outbreak) that led to the fair being staged over two days in subsequent years to accommodate the additional classes and competitions. 3. This year the society is honoured to welcome HRH The Princess Royal to the fair on Tuesday 2 December. This will be The Princess Royal’s fifth visit to the showground, but her first time attending the Winter Fair. Our royal connections go back to 1907 when, three years after the foundation of the society, King George V became patron, followed by King George VI in 1936. The Queen took over the role in 1952 and remains the patron to this day. 4. Originally the event was held purely in the South Glamorgan Hall. It now takes up the majority of the showground with tradestands, a farmers market, the food hall, competitions, classes demonstrations and exhibitions galore. 5. The very first winner of the Supreme Championship back in 1990 was a 19-month old steer named Lucky Lad. Weighing in at 645kg, who was sold for £7,500, approximately £16,000 in today’s money! Last years champion was sold for £6,600. 6. During his visit in 2001, HRH The Prince of Wales entered the ring and made the final judging decision in the Supreme Welsh Foal Championship and signed the judges book to confirm his choice. The lucky winner was a section B filly named Sianwood Bayleaf, owned by Anne and John James. 7. 1,250 plus livestock entries make the Royal Welsh Winter Fair the finest prime stock event in the UK, if not Europe and last year a record crowd of nearly 29,500 visitors came along to the two-day event. Come And See Us At The Royal Welsh Winter Fair.

We will be in the Livestock Complex. T Alun Jones & Son, Danycapel Garage, Dryslwyn, Carmarthenshire, SA32 8SD 01558 668383 | gwlithyn@talunjones.co.uk | www.talunjones.co.uk

There is a bike to suit all needs from a 2 wheel drive 400cc for the smallholder costing under £4000 to the Diesel 700 for the heavy user. The Diesel 700 utilises a Kohler 2 cylinder liquid cooled engine, running on red diesel they are able to return in the region of 40mpg. They are a very

reliable bike, a little slower than a petrol with a top speed of 43mph, but that’s plenty to outrun any calf or sheep! They have moved on a long way from the first diesel bikes that hit the market. Couple the fuel savings with a 3 year parts and labour warranty and you have a very good offering. If you require a little more shelter from the elements then a Polaris Ranger is the ATV for you. Whether it’s a Ranger 400cc petrol or a Diesel 1000cc, Shropshire Quads are able to offer good deals and excellent service backup.
