BOOM STABILITY ESSENTIAL WHEN BUYING A NEW SPRAYER ritish farmers consider boom stability to be at which dramatically reduces the time required to B

the top of their wish-list when buying a new sprayer. This is the message from independent market research commissioned by Vicon, where the views of 250 arable farmers were sought relating to new sprayer purchases. Asked what items are essential when making a new sprayer purchase, over half of the group responded by saying boom stability was an influential factor. “Boom stability is a vital part of the Vicon sprayer design, simply because it controls unwanted movement and allows nozzles to be kept parallel to the crop canopy, which boosts application precision,” says Vicon sales manager David Furber. “In contrast, poor stability control will increase costs and will fail to give crops the care and attention they need.” Another important aspect highlighted by the survey is sprayer cleaning, which is an area that Vicon has recently developed through its iXclean Pro automated tank and boom line washing system,

thoroughly clean the sprayer. “We want to provide farmers with the most efficient and innovative cleaning systems when they choose a Vicon sprayer,” he says. In addition to technical features, high up the wish-list of those surveyed is warranty and service support from the dealer network. Many farmers were keen to share the difficulties they experienced getting the right level of service and support from their dealers. Survey results also revealed the average lifetime of a farm sprayer – in this instance it is 10.9 years. However, more than one third of the farmers questioned in the survey still use a sprayer that is older than 11 years. “We believe that every crop deserves the best care, and that’s why we are happy to discuss all aspects of spraying with farmers, including boom stability and the cleaning power available for the entire range of Vicon sprayers,” he says.

OH BROTHERS! NEW HOLLAND 0% FINANCE AVAILABLE ON TRACTOR JOINS NOTTING KUHN’S MINIMUM TILLAGE HILL CARNIVAL PARADE RANGE joining the world famous music and colour of the weekend-long Notting Hill carnival this year was the blue of a New Holland tractor. The appearance in London was part of an on-going tour by a cider-making group of young brothers who have been loaned the British-built T7.200 by New Holland to travel around England promoting their seven-flavour Brothers range of cider. Francis, Jonathan, Matthew and Daniel Showering, from Somerset, have been handing out free samples and barbecued sausages on the tour and on Saturday they took the tractor on a whistle-stop tour of the capital’s hot spots and highlights. On bank holiday Monday the brothers and the New Holland T7.200 joined the main parade, following Pepe Francis’s steel band and towing the Brothers Cider trailer. Sara Sebastianelli, New Holland Brand Communications UK & ROI, said: “It was brilliant to see our British-built T7 tractor take a tour of London’s landmarks and take its place amongst all the colour and fun of the carnival. “We were delighted to team up with the Showering family and loan our kit to support them in promoting their traditional, family-run British business around the country.” Managing the brothers’ Taste of Somerset tour is Toby Crowther, associate director of Sketch Events. He said: “The New Holland tractor has been a huge draw on the tour, people generally don’t get the chance to be up close to such powerful machines and were excited to get the chance to see one up close - it’s really very impressive!” Cider has been made in Somerset by the Showering family since 1658. The tour began in July and, after the Notting Hill carnival, a series of other stop-offs are planned at universities around the south of England and the Midlands.

Amazone..

AMAZONE LTD LAUNCH NEW CENIUS TX MULCH CULTIVATOR AT TILLAGE-LIVE 2015 T

he new Cenius TX cultivator was shown in 7 metre working width at the recent Cereals 2014 event and, at Tillage-Live, the extended range of smaller widths will be launched. Now available in 4.0m, 5.0m, 6.0m as well as the 7.0m, the 4-stagger layout of the new C-Mix tines, with a tine spacing of 28 cm and the frame height of 80 cm, ensures its use in a diverse range of applications and guarantees blockage-free operation. The newly designed drawbar includes, as standard, hydraulic lift which means a comfortable coupling up to the tractor. As an option, a selectable traction assistance system is available which, when activated, additionally transfers part of the machine weight back on to the rear axle of the tractor - with up to 1,500 kg being available at the maximum working depth. This improves the tractive force between the tractor tyres and the ground, thus reducing slippage, saving fuel and increasing work rates. A mixture of share options means that working quality can be maintained throughout the working depth spectrum. The rear discs are easily adjusted via two spindles from the outside of the machine and the excellent levelling effect they provide results in a perfect soil profile being left after the following consolidation roller. The double row of pitchadjustable rear discs are protected against stone damage by their rubber mount fixing. Depth control is carried out via a mixture of the front support tyres and the rear following roller and is, as standard, hydraulically adjustable on the move from the tractor seat. In spite of the compact design, the use of twin tyres on the tractor is possible without any problems. The pivoting drawbar and centre transport axle means that the machine is extremely manoeuvrable on the headlands. In work, some of the weight can be carried on the transport wheels in softer ground or, in extreme wet conditions, the rear roller can be removed altogether. There is a choice of rear following rollers to suit differing soil types. Cayron 200V in the ground for the first time Following on from the static introduction at LAMMA and Cereals earlier this year, Tillage-Live offers the opportunity to see the new Cayron plough in the ground. Although there are two versions will be available - the Cayron 200, with a stepped furrow width adjustable or the Cayron 200 V which is equipped, as standard, with hydraulic furrow width adjustment - at Tillage-Live will be the Cayron 200 V. hydraulic system provides an easy set-up of the front furrow width, the pulling angle and working width via three interlinked hydraulic rams. Hydraulic adjustment of the front furrow width comes as standard on both models. The body to body clearance of 100 cm, in combination with a beam height of 83 cm and the smooth surface of the overdimensioned main beam, guarantees maximum passage. Both models are equipped with a double-action shear bolt protection system against damage. High-quality design: The headstock is equipped with a sprung, one-piece sprung cross shaft which provides a very good damping function and so clearly reduces the strain on the turnover linkage. The turnover mechanism is designed around a 130 mm diameter hollow shaft and equipped with two equally large, high-quality, robust taper roller bearings. C-Blade plough body: The plough will feature a body that has been 100 % developed by AMAZONE. One of the characteristics of the C-Blade generation body is the front shin which has been enlarged by 90 %. With increasing ploughing speeds, the wear point is shifted down the mouldboard and this new shin design in front of the mouldboard entirely covers the wear area thus reducing the running costs. In addition, one other detail makes a huge effect. The wing is designed in such a way that the point covers the wing. The welded seam is located safely under the point, thus hampering objects, such as, for example, baler twine from becoming trapped in the welded seams between the wing and point. Operator-friendly down to the last detail: During the turning procedure for the Cayron 200 V, initially the plough frame is swivelled out to achieve sufficient ground clearance under all conditions. The position of the plough bodies to the frame remains unchanged. There is no movement in the individual body bearings but just in the strong vertical bearings of the main linkage system. Cirrus 03 trailed cultivator drill Tillage-Live gives the chance to see both the Cirrus 3003 Compact and the Cirrus 6003-2 in action in the field. The 3m Compact, as the name suggests, is shorter for better manoeuvrability and offers a 3,000 litre seed hopper whereas the 6003-2 is longer to provide more turning clearance with twin tyres on the tractor. With its bigger tank either 3,600 litres in plain grain format or the 6003-2C comes a 4,000 litre pressurised tank and has the ability to apply fertiliser alongside the seed The optional CrushBoard levels and firms ahead of the twin row disc harrow element which provides the cultivation in front of the new Matrix tyres. Adjustable for depth from the tractor seat, the 460mm diameter serrated cultivation discs create the perfect, crumbled seedbed with their aggressive action.

Lely..

LELY UNVEILS A REVOLUTIONARY NEW BALER ely unveils a revolutionary new baler in high density bales. For a visual impression visit: L

Maassluis, 4 September 2014. Lely have unveiled a revolutionary continuous baling system during their Yellow Revolution event on the 4th of September called the Lely Welger CB Concept. The groundbreaking variable baler does not need to stop or slow down when baling any type of crop. The new concept is revolutionary as it ties a bale whilst simultaneously starting the next one. A true continuous baling concept, a true Yellow Revolution! By continuously staying in motion, the operation is much more efficient and comfortable. More high quality bales can be made now that no time is lost waiting for tying and releasing. Driving at continuous speed will significantly improve the comfort for the driver, but also reduce fuel consumption and minimize wear and tear as frequent breaking is no longer required.

How continuous baling works As soon as the desired bale size is reached a transport system moves the bale within the belt to the extended back of the baler. This creates room for a new bale to start immediately in the front. After the first bale is tied by the net wrap system, the tailgate will open and drop the bale on the go. The baler returns to its compact position, ready again to finish the bale which is being made in the front. During this continuous process, a cleverly engineered belt buering and tensioning system ensures a consistent tension on the belt resulting

Vicky: 07780 471481 | Jess: 07825 440251

www.continuousbaling.com. Joined forces The new baler concept was developed by engineers of Lely and its American partner Vermeer. The Lely and Vermeer cooperation dates back to the eighties and has been successful ever since. The Lely Welger CB Concept was introduced at the same time in Pella, Iowa (US) and in Maassluis (The Netherlands). Next steps The current machine is a concept. Lely and Vermeer aim to continue extensive testing and finetuning of the machine in dierent circumstances with potential customers during the next years. If all goes well commercial availability is expected to be soon after. Lely, founded in 1948, directs all its eorts towards creating a sustainable, profitable and enjoyable future in farming for its customers. Lely is the only company worldwide to supply the agricultural sector with a complete portfolio of products and services ranging from forage harvesting to automated feeding systems, barn cleaners and milking robots. Lely is also working on business concepts to ensure energyneutral operations in the dairy sector. For many years Lely has been the undisputed market leader in the sales and service of automated milking systems. The company has a strong position in forage harvesting products, and with over 65 years of acquired knowledge of the agricultural cycle Lely has an unrivalled position. The Lely Group is active in more than 60 countries and employs some 2,000 people.

XCEL 1250 CONTRACTORS REAR DISCHARGE SPREADER T

he new second generation XCEL 1250 Rear Discharge Spreader builds on the award winning success of the original machine. With the invaluable feedback from our customers, our engineers and designers have implemented many tweaks and improvements to enhance the XCELs performance further. The new XCEL 1250 retains the patented and proven chain flail and spinning disc spreading system and has being refined to improve both the spread pattern and adjustability. The spreading system can handle a number of dierent materials including farmyard manure, chicken manure, compost and sludge. The chain flails allow a greater capability to handle foreign objects in the manure (stones, cement blocks etc.) than auger type machines. The XCEL gives a very even spread pattern in excess of 16 metres and 20 metres plus with some materials. The new machine uses marine type double floor chains to convey the manure and ensure an even feed to the spreading discs. The marine chain allows the XCEL 1250 to work very well with all material types, both wet material and very dry material and provide a steady flow of material to the flails and spinning discs. The XCEL 1250 is a high output spreader and for our customers, downtime is not an option. Keeping this in

Well Drillers Association..

WHAT IS THE WELL DRILLERS ASSOCIATION? T

he Well Drillers Association was first formed some 75 years ago and acts as a forum for interested parties in the design and construction of water wells and boreholes. Its membership consists of companies and individuals engaged in well construction, test pumping, maintenance and rehabilitation. It is not open to manufacturers and materials suppliers but a number of its members act as distributors for well related equipment including pumps. The Association meetings allow members to discuss the industry, technical specifications, contract problems, training and the potential impact of legislation on the industry. It also maintains close contacts with the Environment Agency, the British Geological Survey and the various Water Authorities and Water Companies. Since very early days the supply of water for drinking and washing purposes has been critical to the survival of businesses and communities. In early days water was taken from adjacent streams and rivers or from from shallow holes simply dug into the ground. Evidence exists that in Roman times wells or boreholes with their associated pipelines became very sophisticated. Over the last 100 years the original cable percussive drills used to construct deep and large diameter boreholes have been joined but not replaced with rotary drills using air, water and biodegradeable drilling fluids with both direct and reverse circulation techniques. Water well construction can now be

Vicky: 07780 471481 | Jess: 07825 440251

carried out up to depths of 500 metres with less deep boreholes having diameters in excess of one metre. Before any decision is made on the economics of developing underground water resources for commercial benefit it is important to discuss with the local regional office of the Environment Agency or the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) the potential for extracting groundwater at the site. Currently in England and Wales any abstractions above the threshold limit of 20 cubic metres per day have to be licenced by the Environment Agency. Some types of abstractions are exempt altogether, such as abstractions for irrigation other than spray irrigation and abstractions for dewatering (ie in construction works). In Scotland an application for authorisation must be made to SEPA for abstractions above 10 cubic metres per day. Abstractions of less than 10 cu m per day for the purpose of dewatering and abstractions for the purpose of extracting geothermal energy are covered by a General Binding Rule and provided the rules are complied with no application for authorisation to SEPA is required. It is also necessary to investigate the expected geology and groundwater regime at the site and this can be carried by the client, engineer or experienced drilling contractor contacting the Records Section of the British Geological Survey at Wallingford, Oxfordshire. They can for a fee prepare a site groundwater assessment report based on information available to them in their borehole data base.

Having begun his career in 1987 at a plant research centre in the Brecon Beacons, and moving on to the IBERS Grassland Development Centre, Mr Morgan has developed a sound and extensive knowledge of grassland management. Mr Morgan has strived hard to help others understand the benefits of grassland management through the publication of many scientific papers and delivering 100s of presentations and training events. Mr Morgan now runs his own company called GrassMaster, an agricultural and environmental consultancy which offers grassland knowledge to clients across the UK and Europe. “It is always a fascinating and rewarding task assessing submissions and it is with great pride that we are able to award these two worthy applicants with an associateship” says Mr Cyril Davies, Royal Welsh Agricultural Society representative on the CARAS council and the Welsh Moderator. "The standard of submissions was extremely high and Welsh agriculture is fortunate to have such knowledgeable and enthusiastic leaders at its forefront.” Mr Owen and Mr Morgan were officially presented with their awards at a reception held on the Tuesday evening of this year’s Royal Welsh Show.

John Deere..

JOHN DEERE INTRODUCES NEXT GENERATION OF SELF-PROPELLED FORAGERS J

ohn Deere’s all-new 8000 Series self-propelled forage harvesters represent an entirely new generation of machines. Building on the best features of the popular 7000 Series, these new models integrate cutting-edge crop analysis and documentation with innovative machine design, paired with reliability, traction and comfort. As a result, these machines take power efficiency, forage quality and cost efficiency to the next level. The new range includes five models, four with standard crop channels and an additional machine with a wide crop channel. All models are available in an ‘i’ specification, including HarvestLab constituent sensing and yield monitoring software as standard. The ProDrive hydrostatic transmission with engine speed management is also now optionally available on all models in the range. John Deere’s FarmSight service packages take the harvest operations of large farms and contractors to a new level of efficiency. Using JDLink wireless technology and with the permission of the owner, dealer product support specialists can remotely monitor machine performance in real time for a fixed monthly fee, to suggest utilisation and efficiency improvements. The longitudinal position of the Stage IV compliant John Deere PowerTech PSX engines has been maintained to enhance rear visibility for trailer filling and safer manoeuvring. With its air intake behind the cab, this engine layout ensures an efficient air flow to the rear of the machine, resulting in lower cooling requirements. Furthermore, a significant weight reduction due to lighter components, reduced crop flow resistance and dry sump gearboxes leads to further fuel savings. So does the engine speed management system, which automatically matches engine rpm to the harvester’s power requirements under varying field and road conditions. Because of their longitudinal layout, the engines are also positioned lower within the forager’s chassis. This in turn lowers the machines’ overall centre of gravity and improves their working stability on steep slopes or while travelling at high speeds on the road. Thanks to the new dry sump greasing technology, the angular gearbox transfers power to the drive systems with minimal power loss. This design also means that all hydraulics and the fan are driven directly from the engine without the need for complex couplings or additional belts and pulleys. New header solutions including grass pick-ups from 3 to 4.5m and Kemper rotary headers from 6 to 9m wide provide customers with cutting edge productivity. Kemper maize headers are optionally available with automatic steering and/or automatic header control. For wholecrop harvesting, John Deere also offers the Zürn ProfiCut 620, a highly efficient header solution for silage that leaves clean, low-cut stubble. The new universal cutterhead has been designed to perform equally well for the very different requirements of both biogas producers and livestock farmers. Depending on their specific requirements, customers can choose between 40, 48, 56 and 64-knife configurations. John Deere’s rigid DuraDrum cutterheads not only deliver the best possible forage quality and the flexibility of a very wide length of cut range, they have also been redesigned to provide an even better crop flow and require less adjustment, to further reduce wear. The AutoLOC (automatic length of cut) feature allows the operator to pre-select the precise cutting length based on actual forage conditions.

Vicky: 07780 471481 | Jess: 07825 440251

John Deere has also completely redesigned the entire processor on the 8000 Series, for even better kernel cracking and excellent maize silage processing. The bevelled discs of the KernelStar2 multicrop processor produce a more aggressive tearing action, which smashes every kernel for maximum starch release and higher silage nutrient value. The kernel processor can be removed in just five minutes for rapid changeover during overlapping harvest seasons. The ‘swing out, swing in’ design makes it easy to lift out the kernel processor and replace it with the grass chute when required. Mounted on the crop spout, HarvestLab measures both dry matter and crop constituents in real time. Developed and patented with Carl Zeiss, HarvestLab uses near infrared technology to measure the harvested crop 17 times a second. Independently certified by the DLG (Deutsche Landwirtschafts-Gesellschaft), HarvestLab takes the guesswork out of producing high quality silage. Complemented by John Deere’s real-time constituent measurement, HarvestLab also has the power to transform the way livestock farmers and biogas plant owners manage their feedstocks and plan their future choice of crop varieties. Another added value feature of the new 8000 Series is the fully integrated advanced dosing system, ADS Twin Line, for silage additive application. Featuring two separate tanks, a 30-litre concentrate tank positioned alongside the cab and a second 300-litre tank located at the rear of the machine, ADS Twin Line serves as a highly versatile management tool. Operator comfort has also been improved, with excellent visibility from the cab due to the anti-glare screen, Bluetooth connectivity, plenty of storage room and automatic air conditioning, adjustable from the CommandARM. Other advanced features include a GreenStar 2630 with touchscreen display and all functions conveniently located in the CommandARM, plus Remote Display Access and AutoTrac with RowSense. The new 8000 Series forage harvesters require minimal maintenance to maximise chopping time. The automatic greasing system removes the need for daily greasing, and the engine radiator screen slides out for easy cleaning with the integrated high-pressure air hose. Extra thick tungsten carbide coatings on the knives and ultra-hard DuraLine components significantly extend the service life of key components, while many of the heavy-duty bearings are sealed for life. In addition, by using only genuine components, lubricants and coolants, John Deere’s PowerGard maintenance and protection plans help to control operating costs as well as maximise uptime and resale value.

TRACKER HELPS POLICE RECOVER STOLEN PLANT A

s the latest figures from NFU Mutual show that cost of rural crime in the UK in 2013 was £44.5m – up 5.2% on the previous years. TRACKER, the UK’s leading stolen plant and agricultural recovery provider, has helped police stem the tide by preventing a rash of plant thefts in counties across England. All four cases were recovered within 24 hours of the TRACKER device being activated, highlighting the value of stolen vehicle recovery (SVR) technology as a way for plant owners to protect their assets from criminals. In April, a Manitou tele-handler was stolen from Gloucestershire and recovered in Warwickshire, the very next day, thanks to TRACKER’s revolutionary technology leading police to its location. The stolen item was located along with approximately 20 other items, which may also have been stolen, resulting in the identification of a suspect now wanted by police. In June, TRACKER played a key role in helping police across several counties locate and recover stolen machinery. A mini digger was stolen from Northamptonshire and police found it the next day, hidden in an industrial unit in Bedfordshire. Similarly, a John Deere ride-on lawn mower was stolen in Berkshire, but luckily it was fitted with TRACKER, allowing police to follow the signal and locate the missing mower, which was hidden in a horse trailer in Surrey.

“For all these plant and machinery owners, investing in TRACKER technology has proved invaluable,” explains Adrian Davenport, Police Liaison Manager for TRACKER. “Without the protection of an SVR unit, stolen plant machinery may never be found, if it’s sold abroad or broken down for parts. Losing valuable plant can hit a business with replacement costs, as well as increased insurance premiums. “TRACKER has a unique relationship with the UK’s police forces, ensuring we can help them recover stolen property, no matter where the thieves go. These four cases clearly show how quickly recoveries can happen, once a TRACKER unit is activated, sending a clear message to criminals.” When a Caterpillar item of plant machinery was stolen from Berkshire, TRACKER technology helped police recover it from North Hampshire, just six hours later.

SCHEDULES OUT FOR 25TH ROYAL WELSH

WINTER FAIR L

ivestock schedules for this year’s 25th Royal Welsh Winter Fair have been sent to over 5,500 potential exhibitors. First staged in 1990, this year the Winter Fair is celebrating its silver jubilee anniversary and is hoping to once again attract over 1,250 top quality livestock entries which gives the event the enviable reputation of being the finest prime stock show in Europe. Taking place on the showground in Llanelwedd, Builth Wells, on 1 and 2 December, the Winter Fair will host 198 livestock classes, special awards and championships, all listed in the special silver jubilee edition of the schedule. The closing date for entries is 22 October. The first Royal Welsh Winter Fair was a modest one-day event which attracted an impressive 500 livestock entries and an attendance of over 6,000 visitors. This year the entries will still be impressive, but will hopefully number over 1,250 with nearly 30,000 of visitors attending the annual two-day event. In nostalgic recognition of the outstanding quality of stock entered, judged and sold at the past 24 events, the front cover of this year’s special edition

livestock schedule features a photo of the very first Royal Welsh Winter Fair Supreme Champion, “Lucky Lad’. The 19-month old Charolais sired steer out of a Charolais cross Belgian Blue dam was entered jointly by Shropshire based owner and breeder, John Dennison and show presenter, Doug Lloyd. Weighing in at 645kg, the champion beast went on to be sold to Pontardawe butcher, Howell Mayberry for £7,500. Along with the ever-popular livestock classes the fair also hosts competitions for produce and handicrafts, poultry, horticulture, ice-cream, beer and cider, meat, sausages and cheese. There is something for everyone to get involved in. Schedules are available online – www.rwas.co.uk Away from the judging rings the very best of Welsh food producers will showcase their produce and Christmas shoppers will be able to explore the hundreds of tradestands, demonstrations, exhibitions and silver jubilee celebrations, including late night shopping and a celebratory firework display on the Monday evening. NSTS..

THE IMPORTANCE OF SPRAYER TESTING - DUNCAN RUSSELL NSTS MANAGER E

veryone will agree that accurate application of pesticides is not only desirable but essential whether for the environmental, the consumer or the grower point of view. Accurate and targeted use of pesticides is all part of modern agriculture. That’s why back in the mid 90’s the Chemical Application members of the Agricultural Engineers Association (AEA) devised a test for application machinery to make sure it was working as intended and with a qualified operator would apply pesticides accurately and on target. In the early years of 2000 this test became the National Sprayer Testing Scheme as one of the main pillars of the Voluntary Initiative. Now NSTS is an accepted part of arable agriculture and requirement of the major crop assurance schemes and supermarket protocols, requiring that farmers and growers have their sprayers inspected annually. Testing pesticide application equipment is soon to become even more important as the Sustainable Use Directive requires that all pesticide application equipment is tested by 26th November 2016. The NSTS is available through a network of test centres who have qualified examiners available to

Can-Am News..

THE NEW CAN-AM OUTLANDER L REVS UP THE ATV SCENE T

he Can-Am Outlander L is the newest addition to Bombardier Recreational Products’ (BRP) extensive All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) line-up for 2015. The Outlander L’s rugged design gives the user a workhorse ATV that handles effectively on rough terrain and narrow trails and is powerful enough to be able haul heavy cargo. The model’s Surrounding Spar Technology (SST) frame, exclusive to BRP, contributes to the Outlander L’s low centre of gravity and has been designed to reduce weight while offering increased durability. In addition, the Double TTI rear suspension and the SACHS five-way pre-loaded adjustable shocks provide the Outlander L with the precision engineered handling, comfort and control that users have come to expect from the Can-Am Outlander ATV range. The new unit utilises a similar G2 frame that is used on the larger Outlander ATV model and delivers reliable and efficient performance from a new single cylinder 38hp Rotax four-stroke engine available with Outlander L 450 or the 46hp Rotax 500 V-Twin available with the Outlander L 500. Both engines offer the right mix of power and torque, underlined by a new signature exhaust note, thanks to its new rear mounted silencer. Riders will benefit from the Outlander L’s steel tubular racks that have a combined capacity of 163kg, with the front rack able to hold 54kg and the rear able to handle 109kg. The rack comes

with a LinQ quick attach accessory system that offers adaptable cargo hauling options and works with numerous Can-Am rack accessories. In addition, there is a 10.9 litre water-resistant storage compartment located on the rear rack. The Can-Am Outlander L comes with a Visco-Lok front differential, which intelligently transfers power from a slipping wheel to the opposing wheel that has traction. Additional features include towing capacity of 590kg, an easy to read multifunctional gauge providing the user with everything they need to know when they are using the ATV, two 35 watt front headlights with selectable high and low beams, a 20.5 litre fuel tank and 2 years warranty. Paul Wood, Cam-Am Commercial Representative UK and Ireland, says: “The Outlander L’s versatility adds another string to the bow of the Can-Am Outlander range. Its rugged design allows it to handle any job that is put in front of it at an affordable price.” To launch the new Can-Am Outlander L, BRP are offering recreational customers only, a promotion of 2 years standard warranty + 3 years extra warranty if purchased between 1st October 2014 to 31st January 2015. The standard 2 years warranty will be applied for all other users. There will be an opportunity to test ride the Outlander L range at local dealerships at the OffRoad Days running between 7th – 30th November.

ISUZU D-MAX PICKS UP PRESTIGIOUS FLEET AWARD bolstered our fleet business with the appointment of T

he Isuzu D-Max has collected another award for the trophy cabinet, having been voted ‘Pick-Up Truck of the Year’ at the Fleet Van Awards 2014. The award was announced at the Fleet Van Awards ceremony held last week at The International Centre in Telford. Stephen Briers, Fleet News editor, commented: “The D-Max’s five-year/125,000-mile warranty and two-year service, plus competitive running costs swayed the decision for the judges in a competitive category. “They were impressed by the 3.5-tonne towing limit while strong sales over the past year is further evidence of how much this pick-up appeals to fleets. The D-Max has the ruggedness required for a multitude of fleet roles but also appeals to drivers with its easy driving style and comfortable seats.” The Fleet Van Awards are presented annually to motor manufacturers, supplier and fleet groups and individuals who have, in the opinion of the judges, achieved the highest possible level of excellence in their sector. The Awards jury is made up of the Fleet News editorial team and experts from across the industry. Upon collection of the trophy, Isuzu’s UK’s General Manager, William Brown, commented: “This award confirms how D-Max makes a compelling case for fleet buyers, combining world-class ability and refinement with low ownership costs. In addition we

a national manager earlier this year, and the ongoing enhancements within our network means we’re better placed than ever before to meet the diverse needs of the UK’s commercial vehicle customers.” In April 2014, Isuzu appointed Colin Wilson to the role of National Fleet Manager, who is responsible for implementing the company’s fleet business plan. STEED GETS UPDATED FOR 2015 T

wo years after commencing volume vehicle sales in Britain with its value for money Steed pick-up, Great Wall Motors is launching the latest generation of the 4x4 double-cab onto the UK market, promising improved quality, a higher specification and even better value. As before, the updated Steed blends style and practicality while retaining its position as the best value pick-up on the market. One of China’s most successful car manufacturers and exporters, the company boasts impressive credentials in the production of pick-ups. Great Wall has manufactured the best-selling pick-up in China every year since 1998 while globally the Brand has sold nearly one million vehicles. Prices for the new Great Wall Steed start at just £14,998 (CVOTR) for the generously-equipped Steed S model – the lowest price for any double-cab 4x4 pick-up in the UK – increasing to £16,998 for the top-of-the-range SE. Despite carrying a premium of only £1,000 over the old model, the 2015 Steed is packed with even more practical, standard features. On sale from 1 October, the new Steed will be available through a carefully selected network of fifty dealers, many appointed in 2012 at the launch of the franchise in the UK. The dealers are mainly small, privately owned enterprises, hand-picked by Great Wall’s franchising team to reflect the brand’s values and philosophy and their ability to deliver the promised standards of customer service that will break new ground in the segment. Typically Steed The vehicle retains its chunky looks, amplified by muscular wheelarches and high ground clearance, but now with a slightly sleeker profile with the side indicators incorporated into the door mirrors instead of the front wing. The Steed is available in Titanium White and three metallic colours (optional at extra cost) – Pearl Black, Sky Silver and Noble Grey. The Tracker special edition will be available in Titanium White and Noble Grey. Inside the new Steed is where some of the more significant improvements are to be found. Higher quality materials, such as that used on the seat facings and a sharper, more contemporary design of instrument cluster, creates a more comfortable and ergonomic feel to the cabin. New technologies have been added to improve convenience and enhance the ownership experience, including a multi-function rear view mirror with automatic dimming and an outside temperature display. A tyre pressure monitoring system is also incorporated which will display the working pressure for each tyre. Carrying capacity compares very well with established pickup rivals as the cargo bed measures 1,380 mm x 1,460 mm x 480 mm (length, width, depth). The Steed has a maximum payload of 1,050 kg and is now certified in the UK to tow 2.5 tonnes with a ‘braked’ trailer. The increase in towing from 2.0 tonnes followed independent tests at the Millbrook Proving Ground in 2013 where it was put through stringent tests by an independent team of engineers and consultants, subsequently resulting in the Steed being fully validated by the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA). The Steed’s capabilities as a durable and versatile load-lugger, both on- and off-road, is impressive. Under the galvanised steel skin lies a separate, rust-proofed ladder-frame chassis, strengthened and braced by reinforced centre cross-members, an impact-resistant rear beam and a reinforced cargo bed. The Steed is fitted with an ‘on-demand’ part-time, four-wheel-drive system that delivers numerous customer benefits. When slippery conditions are encountered on-road – or an all-terrain capability is required off-road – the driver can select all-wheel-drive simply by pressing a button on the dashboard, up to speeds of 12mph.

The advanced transmission system, manufactured for Great Wall by BorgWarner, is the dual-range type seen in other serious off-road vehicles. To further aid its usability, the Steed has selectable lowrange ratio gears for when serious off-roading is encountered. For 2015, the Steed is also equipped with rear disc brakes replacing the old drum units to increase stopping power and stability.

Engine The 2015 Steed uses the same free-spinning 2.0 Litre diesel as the previous model, now certified to comply with Euro 5 emission regulations. The water-cooled 1,996 cc power plant is fitted with a CAC (charge air cooled) intercooler system, state-of-the-art glow plug technology and a variable-geometry turbocharger (VGT). The variable geometry turbocharger features turbine blades that alter their pitch according to engine speed – to provide the Steed with high levels of pulling power throughout the rev range, and maximum torque from as low as 1,800 rpm. With a long-stroke design for optimum torque generation, the Steed engine features an 83.1 mm bore and a 92.0 mm stroke, with a rigid block structure and direct injection fuel system to reduce noise and vibration while on the move. The Steed engine produces maximum power of 139PS at 4,000 rpm with maximum torque of 305Nm spread over a rev range of 1800 to 2,800 rpm. Steed Equipment and ownership promise The Steed will come with a host of standard features typically offered only as high-cost options on competitor models, including 16-inch alloy wheels, daytime running lights, remote central locking, a Thatcham-approved Category 1 alarm, electric windows all round, air-conditioning, heated front seats and for the 2015 model, the addition of a double-din Alpine CD/radio with USB/ MP3 and Bluetooth connectivity and steering wheel mounted audio controls. An auto dimming rear view mirror is also now standard. To make the Steed ownership proposition even more attractive, Great Wall Motor makes a highly-attractive, six-point promise to all its customers. This comprehensive care package includes a six year / 125,000 mile mechanical warranty, a six-year anti-perforation warranty, three-year paint warranty and three years of roadside recovery and assistance. However, going over and above the industry expectations, it also includes inflation-proof fixed-price monthly service payments, and the policy of only invoicing for work previously agreed with the customer. Further promises ensure customer convenience: test drives at the location of the enquirer’s choice (if they live or work within 20 miles of a Great Wall dealer), and free service pick-up and drop-off for customers up to 20 miles away from the dealer. Keeping ownership costs down yet further, the Steed boasts the lowest insurance ratings (from 7A for the S, and 8A for the SE models) of any vehicle in the pick-up segment. State of the art manufacturer Unlike its predecessor, the latest Steed is built and assembled at Great Wall’s newer manufacturing facility based at the head-office in Baoding City. Utilising the latest vehicle assembly robotics, sourced by Great Wall from around the globe and a new fully automated paint shop, it is anticipated that the Steed will have improved quality levels throughout the vehicle. Great Wall also has its own purpose-built test centres and laboratories to assesses and optimise the performance and capabilities of its vehicles – encompassing safety tests, emissions, and the management of noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) – with all resulting prototype manufacture being conducted in-house.
