Winter food cost savings

Correct low forage digestibility and protein levels

............................................................................................................................................................................................... Correct low forage digestibility and protein levels to unlock significant winter feed cost savings Variable grass silage quality could push the dairy farm feed bill up this winter unless remedial nutritional action is taken to balance many high fibre, low protein forages. That’s according to nutritionist Malcolm Graham from FiveF Alka Ltd, who says early season grass silage data generated from using the latest on farm NIR forage testing equipment has highlighted some unusual nutritional challenges. “Typical grass silages are of fairly low D-value and quite wet (23-27% dry matter), 3.8-3.9 pH (which is pretty acidic), 475500+ NDF and only 12.5-14% protein. They are also very variable both between cuts and, unusually, within a clamp. This is starting to be backed up by the trend in laboratory-based analysis. As a result, it’s clear that many grass silage-based winter rations will need constant review and adjustment to maintain animal performance whilst controlling costs,” he says. Mr Graham says that the most obvious solution is to introduce some rapidly fermenting cereals into dairy cow diets to provide a cost-effective energy source. However, this will be fraught with problems, he warns. “With low forage digestibility already likely to restrict grass silage intake and the fact that the underlying acid load will only increase if maize silage is in the ration, straight cereals will have

to be introduced very carefully to avoid the risk of acidosis. There’s a further complicating factor for maize silage users in that its inclusion will depress total ration protein levels still further.” Mr Graham says the underlying acid load in the diet will act like an anchor on many dairy units. “It’s a real drag because whatever combination of increased yield or lower concentrate use is being pursued, success can only be achieved by increasing overall dry matter intakes and digestion of the forage components of the diet. And to do that you must limit the excess ration acidity load.” “You need to keep the rumen healthy and humming along so it can digest the forage fibre and maintain good dry matter intakes to achieve target milk output performance. The answer is to introduce a fast fermenting source of energy and protein that won’t upset rumen function. Fortunately, the extended range of Alkasystem products allow us to do this because they both alkalise the diet and contribute a cost-effective, concentrated source of protein that facilitates higher ration starch inclusions – just what’s needed to keep dairy farm diets delivering this winter.” He explains that regular forage analysis will give a good indication of the acidity and variability of these difficult grass and maize silages throughout the winter feeding period. “Once we have this information we can work out a feeding regime that tackles the

acid load and then exploits the improved forage and cereal utilisation to lower costs or boost cow performance. “For example, if we can fix the acid load by employing an appropriate ration alkalising solution in the feeds (the concentrate or direct to TMR); and increase forage dry matter intake by just 1kg per head per day, then a whole host of possibilities open up to us. Given the way substitution effects occur in the rumen, this 1kg of dry matter that is already in the clamp and paid for can replace 1kg of concentrates – typically saving 19p a cow per day for the same performance. That’s about £600 per 100 cows per month. “Alkalising the diet or the feed materials also allows safe and effective feeding of higher levels of low cost cereal grains that can directly replace higher cost manufactured feeds in the diet. The balancing protein benefit of Alkasystem products like Alkagrain means 2-3kg more cereals can be fed safely, often with a saving of £50 to £70 per tonne. That’s a saving of £300 to £600 per 100 cows per month.” He also adds that if the extra kg of dry matter intake is balanced correctly, the ration should be able to produce another two litres of milk at no extra cost – if plentiful forage stocks that are already paid for are available. “Even in the current climate of depressed milk prices that equates to about 44p per cow per day or an extra £1,300 per 100 cows per month.”

Lowering cost of production

Ensuring dairy heifers meet growth targets to lower costs of production

............................................................................................................................................................................................... By Chris McCullough Dairy farmers should consider the costs involved when rearing replacement heifers in the herd and try to ensure these are kept to a minimum. Data released from the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise in Northern Ireland indicates that it costs €0.06-0.07 per litre on all milk produced to rear a heifer to the point of calving. The college researched how to keep costs to a minimum yet still ensuring the heifers reached the targets of being in-calf by 15 months and entering the dairy herd at 24 months of age at the ideal weight. Calf mortality rates within the first weeks of life are typically 4-7%. However, significant variation exists between farms, highlighting that management, hygiene, husbandry and biosecurity all have important roles to play. Colostrum management is the cornerstone in successfully preparing the calf for a good start in life. Colostrum contains a range of components that are important for the health and nutrition of the new born calf. These include sugars, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, immunoglobulins and growth factors. Immunoglobulins play a crucial role in the immune system, fighting off pathogenic organisms and providing resistance to disease. A research programme, conducted by AFBI in partnership with Northern Ireland dairy farmers, and funded by DAERA and AgriSearch, demonstrated major variation in colostrum quality found on farms and the difficulties in ensuring calves have adequate levels of immunity in early life. It was found that variations in colostrum quality were influenced by dry period length, parity, vaccination history of the dam and time from calving until colostrum collection. Studies at AFBI and internationally have shown the benefits of offering up to 10% of birth weight as a first feed of colostrum (limited to maximum of 4 litres) on calf immune status and also the importance of delivering this first feed within the first hours of life. AFBI research has shown that feeding lower levels of colostrum, for example 5% of birth weight (2 litres) fed within minutes of birth, resulted in 13% of calves failing to achieve an adequate immune status (10mg/ml IgG). In this study, only 27% of calves fed 2 litres of colostrum had serum IgG levels greater than 15 mg/mL at 24 hours of age compared to 81% of

4 | AgriNews | October 2016

calves fed 4 litres as colostrum. Colostrum should be fed quickly after birth because the efficiency of absorption of antibodies in the calf’s stomach reduces as time from calving increases. In addition, as time from calving increases, immunoglobulin concentration of the colostrum reduces at a rate of 1.5-3%/hr. Therefore, it is recommended that the first feed of colostrum is hand fed as soon after birth as possible, ideally within the first hours of life. Work is currently ongoing with over 1,000 heifers on Northern Ireland dairy farms to quantify the impacts of colostrum management, immune status, calf ill health and calf nutrition on long term performance and the economics of production. This information will help inform the development of best practice guidelines and reinforce the need for care and attention in the first days of the calf’s life to maximise its production potential. CAFRE benchmarking data indicates that milk, forage and concentrate feed costs account for almost 85% of the total variable costs incurred in rearing a dairy heifer (typically €660 per heifer). At the pre weaning stage, research is ongoing to optimise milk/milk replacer feeding level and weaning protocols to maximise lifetime performance. Early AFBI research found no long term benefits of increasing milk replacer feeding level beyond 600g per day. However research conducted in the US has shown benefits under very high output milk production systems. What is clear is underfeeding of milk or milk replacer can have negative consequences. Work currently underway at AFBI is examining weaning protocols, in combination with timing of forage provision, under different milk replacer feeding levels. In this study calves were offered either moderate (39kg) or high (70kg) levels of milk replacer from birth to weaning at 10 weeks of age. Concentrate was offered ad libitum throughout the study providing a fibre source in line with animal welfare regulations. Forage was either not offered until weaning or in the form of chopped straw from day 14 or 56, or grass silage at day 56. The study is currently ongoing but preliminary data indicates statistically significant differences in live weight of calves reared on standard milk levels compared to increased milk levels.

The New Holland NH Drive

Shows a vision into the future of agriculture

............................................................................................................................................................................................... Unveiled on 30th August at the Farm Progress Show in the United States, the New Holland NHDrive concept autonomous tractor is a driverless machine which can perform a wide range of farming tasks day and night. It is also able to reach the field autonomously via private onfarm tracks, to work together with other autonomous or traditional operator controlled machines and courtesy of the cab it can still be driven by an operator ensuring maximum flexibility. At first glance, the T8 Blue Power tractor on display may have looked like a normal standard tractor to the numerous visitors who packed New Holland's stand at the Farm Progress Show, the annual outdoor farming machinery show that is held in Boone, Iowa (USA). But once the first images of the video dedicated to the tractor and its incredible operational capacities appeared on the screen, everyone understood that they were witnessing a glimpse into the future of farming, one that could feature fully autonomous machinery: something which could redefine the agriculture of tomorrow. A further evolution based on efficiency and sustainability Developed by CNH Industrial in collaboration with its longstanding technology provider Autonomous Solutions Incorporated, ASI, a Utah-based

company that is the industry leader in off-road autonomous solutions, the New Holland NHDrive autonomous tractor is an unmanned vehicle that is fully autonomous and can be monitored and controlled via a desktop computer or via a portable tablet interface. This enables farmers to access tractor and implement data, wherever they are, from different locations, whilst checking fields from the comfort of their pick-up, whilst tending livestock or whilst at home, and always whenever they need. This facilitates right-time decision making to enhance operational efficiency and productivity. Furthermore, farmers will maintain full control and ownership of their data. A path-plotting screen shows the tractor’s progress, another shows its live camera feed, providing the user with up to four real time views (two front and two rear). A further screen enables monitoring and modification of key machine and implement parameters such as engine speed, fuel levels and implement settings, including seeding rate or coulter downforce. The route to the field can also be planned, should this involve private roads or tracks. The NHDrive concept tractor is equipped with a seeder, and is able to autonomously seed the next crop straight behind the combine. Using an application installed on a portable device, perfect for supervised

automation, such as an operator driving a combine, or on a desktop computer, perfect for the farmer working in his farm office, the tractor and implement parameters can be continually monitored and controlled, and changes can be made if necessary. Able to work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the NHDrive tractor helps to reduce the risks associated with human error as it follows predetermined and optimised plans for all activities. It is able to reach higher levels of productivity and efficiency than traditional methods. The NHDrive can make full use of the periods of favourable weather for farming operations by working day and night. In the future, the NHDrive tractor will be able to completely automate grain handling during the harvest when equipped with a trailer, including unloading, transport and offloading activities. Two tractors in one: maximum flexibility The NHDrive concept tractor is equipped with a cab that is completely identical to that of a standard T8. This means that it can also be used for those operations where complete autonomy is not yet possible, such as front loader work and high speed road transport. As regards getting around the farm, the NHDrive tractor can travel on pre-mapped private paths.

Case IH unveil new concept

Case IH unveil an autonomous concept vehicle

............................................................................................................................................................................................... Case IH unveiled an autonomous concept vehicle today at the Farm Progress Show in Boone, Iowa. The concept vehicle is a cabless Case IH row crop tractor that can operate autonomously with a wide range of field implements. “In many parts of the world, finding skilled labor during peak use seasons is a constant challenge for our customers,” said Case IH Brand President Andreas Klauser. “While we offer auto-steering and telematics on our equipment today for remote management of farm machinery and employees, this autonomous tractor concept demonstrates how our customers and their employees could remotely monitor and control machines directly. This technology will offer our customers greater operational efficiencies for tasks such as tillage, planting, spraying and harvesting.” Klauser explained that the concept was created to validate the technology and to collect customer feedback regarding their interest and need for future autonomous products for their operations. “It is very exciting for us to explore the possibilities that this technology can provide to our customers. We look forward to getting their input regarding this concept and how it can help them achieve new production efficiencies,” said Klauser. Case IH and CNH Industrial’s Innovation Group based the cabless autonomous concept on an existing Case IH Magnum

The StarFire 6000 is our new generation receiver, uniting leading edge receiver technology and yet again defining a new standard of ultimate accuracy and signal stability. The StarFire 6000 works seamlessly with all accuracy levels and John Deere guidance systems. Second to none the StarFire 6000 inherited the field proven Terrain Compensation Module (TCM) to automatically compensate roll, pitch and yaw of the vehicle, while GLONASS compatibility remains in base. SF1 accuracy has further improved, being far superior to EGNOS and continues to be free of charge. Introducing “Triple StarFire Accuracy”, the new SF3 correction signal with “In-SeasonRepeatability” and up to four times quicker pull-in time, as well as further enhanced RTK solutions such as 14-days of “RTK Extend”, the StarFire 6000 receiver already today is ready to compete with the future. Last but not least, to provide you peace of mind, the StarFire 6000 is now also available with a locking device. Ultimate uptime with Triple StarFire Accuracy The StarFire 6000 receiver picks up three StarFire correction signals from geo-stationary satellites in parallel instead of just one. In case of signal loss to one of the geo-stationary satellites the receiver can instantly switch to one of the two other SF3 correction signals provided. This ensures maximum uptime and accuracy even in difficult conditions like working on headlands next to the forest. Triple StarFire Accuracy is a new in base feature to SF1 and SF3 accuracy levels. New SF3 signal with In-Season-Repeatability Compared to the previous SF2 correction signal, the new SF3 signal not only provides improved 3cm pass to pass accuracy, but much more important SF3 is repeatable within the course of a 9 months season. When working in long fields or when returning to a field for a different application on a later date, guidance line drifts will be history.

FarmGem

Why choose a FarmGem Sprayer?

............................................................................................................................................................................................... Years of experience have enabled the FarmGEM Design Team to build a range of crop sprayers which incorporate a very high level of strength without excess weight. For example the steel we choose and the lattice construction of the FarmGEM range of booms gives structural strength and stability but keeps weight to a minimum. Each joint has a lubrication point and every hinge pin is secured preventing movement and increased wear. Each series of sprayers is loaded with specification depending on its individual class, however still allowing the grower to make specifications choices to suit individual circumstances. For example the Diamond trailed machines comes as standard with axle suspension, high capacity pump and stainless steel spray lines, auto circulation prime and purge system but a Radion 8140 touch screen controller is a choice option. In the modern world we live in very few manufacturers can truly claim they have unique features. So the “SelfTrak” drawbar a system we designed some 20 + years ago which many have tried and failed to copy we feel is unique. It offers trailed sprayer

wheel tracking without complicated electronics, sensors or hydraulics. We were one of the first manufacturers to control boom yaw movement and although many manufacturers now control this movement we think we still do the best job. Oh and we haven’t mentioned the Sapphire VT2 that truly is unique. Manufacturers often claim their machines is the strongest, but how many are willing to back up this claim? FarmGEM are! We provide a Three Year Construction Warranty with our crop sprayers which covers the manufacture of all our steel components, from boom to chassis to steps, sharing our confidence with our customers. efficiently with further considerations of safety for the sprayer operative and the environment.

NSTS is the National Sprayer Testing Scheme for the UK. The scheme has been part of UK agriculture since 2003 and a main pillar of the Voluntary Initiative. NSTS tested sprayers are a requirement of UK crop assurance scheme and supermarket protocols and NSTS satisfies the sprayer testing requirements of the Sustainable Use Directive. The NSTS was devised by the UK sprayer industry with input from farmers and grower representatives, the chemical industry, contractors as well as crop assurance and super markets. Launched initially as the AEA sprayer testing scheme it became NSTS in 2003 as an important part of the VI.

The Test The full test consists of 47 test items, the first 30 of which must be satisfied to receive a pass certificate. The subsequent 10 are advisory and the final 7 are optional test elements. This comprehensive test covers all the application components of the sprayer to ensure the machine is working correctly and

Major components of the sprayer tested include control systems, hoses and pipework, nozzles and nozzle control systems, filters, pumps, tank, chemical induction systems and booms. In addition it is recommended that computer control systems are checked to maximize efficiency and to satisfy the calibration element of crop assurance schemes.

About sprayer test centres NSTS machines testers cover the whole of the UK including, Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. With its network of sprayer test centres and machine examiners, farmers, growers, contractors, groundscare professionals and amenity contractors can easily access an examiner in their location. The majority of tests are carried out on the owners’ premises and any faults found can be fixed and maintained on site at the time of the test.

Limited-Slip Front Differential True 4-wheel drive with a limited-slip front differential and a locking rear differential help reduce wheelspin to a minimum, giving you greater control and a smoother ride on rough or muddy terrain.

Steve Birchall tells all

Owner of Steve Birchall Poultry House Cleaning Services Ltd

...............................................................................................................................................................................................

No poultry producer can afford to hinder flock performance by allowing a build up of micro organisms. Even low disease levels drag profits back and skimping on the cleaning routine between flocks is false economy, says Lancashire based cleaning specialist Steve Birchall. “There is no opportunity these days to rest buildings between flocks. Turnaround times are tight and it is, therefore, vital that buildings are not only thoroughly cleaned but disinfected as well, and if there has been a health problem the cleaning and disinfection treatment should take account of it” says Steve, who has been operating a nationwide contract poultry shed cleaning business for over 35 years. His two teams are equipped to carry out whatever cleaning regime producers require

and he suggests a good standard retune for anyone who wants the best safeguard. After the litter has been removed, the building and any equipment either trained inside or taken out should be power washed at about 3400 psi with a combined cleaner/sanitizer/ deodorizer, which should remove some 80% of micro organisms at this stage. “Older buildings are often more difficult to clean than more modern ones,” Steve says, “however, if you are going to do the job at all then it is worth doing properly and you have to take sufficient time, particularly in breeder or laying units where nest boxes and equipment have been in place for 12 months or more. Broiler units with a six or seven day turnaround are less difficult. However, people who prefer to do what is a rather unpleasant job themselves often get rather jaded before it has been done properly. If there are any other enterprises on the farm, they have to keep breaking off to do other work. Poultry buildings, whether they are broiler, breeder, layer or turkey units, not only need to look clean, they must be disease free. The standard routine might, in the event of a flock health problem be extended to include powerful vircuide. All the products used should be biodegradable and safe should there be a run-off into a watercourse.

Protect ORS

with tebuconazole at the first sign of LLS

............................................................................................................................................................................................... With Light Leaf Spot infections able to significantly detract from oilseed rape yield potential, UK growers must be ready to act at the first sign of the disease this autumn. More than 20% of winter oilseed rape crops are likely to be affected by Light Leaf Spot, with infected crops susceptible to yield losses of up to 50%. That is the warning from Adama Agricultural Solutions which advises growers to be prepared to treat affected crops at the very first sign of infection. “Light Leaf Spot is especially prevalent during the wet winter months when spores of the Pyrenopeziza brassicae fungus amass on the upper and lower surfaces of leaves of winter sown oilseed rape,” explains Kully Mudhar, Adama’s oilseed rape technical specialist. “The spores take on a salt grain or talcum powder appearance, with infected plants more susceptible to frost damage.” Severe infections can cause extensive plant loss, especially

in hard winters, and because the disease has a poly-cyclical lifecycle, it continues to infect the developing crop, with leaves, stems and seed pods all targeted by the disease’s damaging lesions. “As soon as the first tell-tale talcum powder spots become visible, growers must act in order to prevent extensive damage from occurring,” Kully advises. However, increasing resistance to azole chemistries means that growers need to use a number of methods to tackle the disease. “Relying on a single family of azoles could potentially accelerate the reduction of the disease’s sensitivity to that specific chemistry, and could ultimately reduce the efficacy of the active ingredients. Adopting an integrated management approach, utilising cultural control measures, host resistance and the timely application of new and existing modes of action, is therefore a more sustainable option.

“Tebuconazole based products, such as Orius (200g/l tebuconazole) and Orius P (133 g/l tebuconazole and 267 g/l prochloraz) have demonstrated good control of Light Leaf Spot as well as being effective against phoma lesions, and, therefore offer proven solutions as part of an integrated control strategy.” Kully advises growers to maintain an element of flexibility in their winter spray programme and to apply Orius P at the first signs of infection. “This will typically be towards the end of October or early November, but exact timings will be dictated by the season’s prevailing weather conditions. “After an initial protective treatment at the start of the winter, Orius P can also be used in the early spring when the ground is fit enough to travel, thereby providing an additional layer of control against subsequent disease cycles.”
