F P McCann - The First Choice Prestressed Horizontal Concrete panels

............................................................................................................................................................................................... FP McCann's Gloucestershire based agricultural precast depot, formerly Milbury Concrete Products, has recently supplied in excess of 300 horizontal precast concrete walling panels for the construction of two high capacity grain stores on Grange Farm, part of the Norfolk located South Pickenham Estate. The large investment in the new facility will enable the farm to get the best possible prices for its own harvest and for it to offer limited additional storage and drying to other local farms and estates. The overall storage capacity will help the estate to benefit from optimum market conditions in that it ensures more than a season’s harvest can be held on stock. The two stores capable of holding up to 22,500 tonnes of grain have been designed and project managed by the Specialist Installations Division of Thurlow Nunn Standen Ltd

(TNS), a family business involved in agricultural construction projects since the 1970’s. Prior to building work commencing, three existing grain silos, a continuous cross flow dryer and associated housing had to be demolished as well as the re-conditioning of the existing weighbridge. Each of the new sheds spans 22.0 metres wide by 91.0 metres long and can be loaded to 6 metres surcharge. FP McCann’s 200mm thick horizontal prestressed concrete walling panels supplied from Lydney, have been installed around the internal perimeter of both buildings to a height of 6 metres. In total 156 panels have been fitted in each grain store along with 12 removable door panels engineered and manufactured in conjunction with TNS’s innovative removable centre post system, designed to facilitate the structural performance of a full

span bottom panel. Incorporated into the doorway system are two pressure release gates. Work was completed before the first loads of grain were unloaded into the sheds earlier this month. The facility is capable of loading at a rate of 120 tonnes per hour with the new drier reducing moisture to a storable level of 15% at a rate of 75 tonnes per hour. Commenting on the horizontal panels, Jeremy Nunn, Director of Thurlow Nunn Standen says, “We went to a lot of trouble with McCann to ensure that the panel design was suitable for the application with particular reference to quality and appearance. The final product and quality of installation has exceeded both ours and the clients expectations and we look forward to putting what we have both learnt to further use on more joint projects”.

Farm Sheep Lameness

New on-farm sheep lameness control tool.

............................................................................................................................................................................................... New on-farm sheep lameness control assessment tool will help pinpoint flock management weaknesses UK sheep producers now have a straightforward way of evaluating the effectiveness of their lameness control strategy, thanks to the availability of a new flock assessment tool from MSD Animal Health (known as Merck Animal Health in the US and Canada). According to the company’s technical manager, John Atkinson MRCVS, the practical new ‘Lameness Control OnFarm Planner’ – developed in conjunction with FAI Farms – offers sheep farmers and their advisers a simple, yet highly visual ‘where are you now’ method of identifying whether a lameness management protocol is unbalanced in any way. “The industry-accepted fivepoint sheep lameness reduction

plan gives shepherds a clear management strategy and a practical protocol for reducing the incidence of this costly problem. However, it can be quite difficult to assess where you are sometimes with existing control approaches, but this new questionnaire-based tool will pinpoint areas of weakness. It is also designed to promote discussion between farmer and adviser over the best action plan for any given flock,” he says. The assessment scores current farm practice within each of the five points that make up the sheep lameness reduction plan: culling; treatment; quarantine; avoidance and vaccination. “Higher scores show you are doing well in those areas of the five point plan. Lower scores highlight the weaknesses and the areas you should focus on in future,” Mr Atkinson says. In the example shown, two

out of the five action points have been carried out well, but the lameness issue has not been reduced as much as was hoped, causing frustration. The outcome pentagon explains why, highlighting weaker implementation in terms of the culling and quarantine practices on the farm. “This shows that if the farmer now focuses on improving culling and quarantine practices, plus a little extra attention to the treatment protocol, then the lameness situation within the flock should improve significantly,” Mr Atkinson explains. Sheep producers interested in finding out more should contact their vet or local animal health adviser, who will help work through the lameness control planner.

Bauer slurry tankers more attractive for large-scale slurry and digestate spreading

............................................................................................................................................................................................... Direct sales approach makes Bauer slurry tankers more attractive for large-scale slurry and digestate spreading Bauer is re-launching its high-specification tankers in Britain by supplying contractors and large farm operators direct at more favourable prices but with service and parts support still available nationwide through Bauer dealers. “The market for large tankers with specialist application equipment is very competitive with a number of players involved,” says Adrian Tindall, Bauer UK & Ireland sales manager. “Dealing direct with the professional operators most likely to use our machines will enable us to ensure we provide the right features and specification for their needs, at prices competitive with other high-quality products.” Bauer tankers available in sizes from 10.5cu m to 24cu m – 10,500-litres to 24,000-litres – are unique in the UK and Ireland for having a hand-made polyester tank mounted on a galvanised steel chassis. The heart-shaped tank cross section results in a low centre of gravity for good stability in hilly fields and on the road, while indents provide ample space for wide and large diameter flotation tyres to minimise soil compaction. Using polyester rather than steel saves a significant amount of weight over a quality-spec steel tanker – as much as 3 tonnes with the 24cu m model. It also provides a container impervious to corrosion. “That is particularly relevant to farms and contractors involved in handling biogas plant digestate, which can be more corrosive than regular livestock slurry,” notes Adrian Tindall. “Together with

8 | September 2015 | AgriNews

the corrosion-resistant galvanised chassis, it means these tankers clean up really well and can look like new even after a lot of use, which results in strong re-sale values.” The tankers are available with Bauer spiral or centrifugal high capacity pumps giving fast filling and spreading rates. A front-mounted filling arm is available for quick turnarounds at the slurry store and a cleaner working experience for the operator. Application options include a double nozzle spray boom for surface spreading up to 27m wide, and a dribble hose applicator in widths from 9m to 30m with a macerating distributor, hydraulic drip stop and hydraulic folding. A drag shoe applicator with working widths of 5.3m to 21m provides in-crop application of slurry or digestate directly on to the ground; a disc injector in 5.2m to 8m widths places liquid beneath the surface for minimum losses through evaporation and quick resumption of pasture grazing; and a spring tine cultivator injector is available for incorporating slurry or digestate into seedbeds. Chassis options include a cranked single axle for smaller tankers in the range to give an extra-low centre of gravity; rear-steer tandem axles with leaf spring or air suspension – the latter is standard on the triple axle 24cu m model – and four-point rear linkage for a mounted applicator. “With all those options, each tanker is specced and priced individually,” notes Adrian Tindall. “But an 18.5cu m tandem axle machine with 15m dribble bar will be about £70,000; and an auto loading system will add around £6000.”

News from Case IH Optum CVX range

............................................................................................................................................................................................... More power and close-to-Puma dimensions is what Case IH claims the European farming community has been asking for – and this is what it has now delivered. The new Optum CVX has a new design with a new bonnet and rear fender styling, plus eye catching signature lighting. “Modern, productive farming and contracting businesses in Europe are among the most demanding customers worldwide, one reason being that cropping is more intensive and yields are higher than in most other regions, while weather conditions often limit available time windows for field work,” Case IH president Andreas Klauser said. “Handling any given task with maximum performance, efficiency and reliability is therefore what the Optum CVX was designed and

built for.” The Optum CVX range consists of two models with compact 6.7-litre NEF engines from FPT Industrial. They offer 270hp or 300hp at a rated speed of 2,100rpm, and a maximum power of 313hp at 1,800rpm for the larger of the two models. The engines feature the Hi-eSCR aftertreatment solution for maximum combustion efficiency and fulfil Stage IV emission regulations. Changes for the engine include new valve material and design for the engine head for higher combustion pressure; however the major change comes in the lower part of the engine block and oil sump, with a specific design where the sump serves as the backbone of the tractor, thus removing stress from the engine block. While the typical weight of the Optum

CVX amounts to 11,000kg, this “structural sump” allows for a maximum gross vehicle weight of 16,000kg, providing ballast and payload options for the customer. The new Case IH Optum features a new bonnet design that will be a feature of future models. The Optum CVX has the ability to put the additional power to the ground while maintaining the agility of the smaller models, thus further increasing efficiency, maximising uptime and increasing comfort levels for the operator, whilst reducing total cost of ownership. “Our engineers have rethought and revised every single detail, always looking for ways to optimise efficiency, performance and reliability alike,” Case IH product marketing manager Dan Stuart said.

Kuhn Farm Machinery Largest four-rotor trailed grass rake to date.

............................................................................................................................................................................................... KUHN Farm Machinery has announced the launch of its largest four-rotor trailed grass rake to date, with the new GA 15131 offering a maximum working width of 14.70 metres. The GA 15131 Gyrorake adds to KUHN’s existing range of grass rakes which includes the 12.5 metre trailed GA 13131 and the semi-mounted GA 8731 (8.60m working width) and GA 9531 (9.30m working width) machines. The GA 15131 uses four 3.65m diameter rotors, the forward pair equipped with 13 tine arms and the rear pair with 15 tine arms. Each tine arm is fitted with four tines, giving a working width of 9.50m to 14.70m. The new rake is designed to deliver a high work output, yet folds to a compact transport dimension of just 3.0 metres wide by 4.0 metres high and 10.90

metres in length. Raking height can be adjusted hydraulically as standard, with all four rotors powered by KUHN’s headstockmounted hydraulic drive unit which gives the option to increase front rotor speed by up to 20% when working in lighter crops. The four rotors work together to create one perfectly formed central windrow (from 1.40 to 2.50 metres in width) and are controlled via a cab-mounted VT50 series terminal which is ISOBUS compatible and which allows operating sequences to be pre-programmed for easy u-turns. Each rotor can be lifted individually for a perfect finish and to give the machine high ground clearance for ease of manoeuvring and unhindered travel across uneven terrain. Each rotor is mounted on four pivoting, large diameter wheels

for excellent ground contouring with KUHN’s STABILIFT system allowing the individual rotors to be lowered parallel to the ground, even on rough terrain, so that the tines don’t come into contact with the soil – thereby preventing the crop from being contaminated with soil. The rotor wheels sit close to the tines to further improve ground following, while a bogie axle and KUHN’s 3D rotor suspension system provide even greater stability and closer ground contouring when working at high speeds. The GA 15131 is characteristically robust and utilises KUHN’s Masterdrive GIII gearbox to reduce power transfer stresses and provide reliable service with low maintenance.

News From Amazone Tillage Live 2015 returns to the North-East.

............................................................................................................................................................................................... After a year or two’s absence down South, the national cultivations event, Tillage-Live will be back in the North-East this year courtesy of Croft Farms, Croft-on-Tees, Darlington. With a constant stream of new cultivation kit coming out of the Amazone stable, this year’s event will see yet another launch with the first public working demonstration of the new 5.0 metre Certos 5001-2TX heavy compact disc harrow. Shown as a static machine on the stand at Cereals 2105, Tillage-Live offers the opportunity to get some dirt moved with those 660mm diameter serrated discs on the Certos. Coming in 4.0, 5.0, 6.0 and 7.0 metre widths, and based on the now familiar TX format of centre running gear with outfront guide wheels and rear packer, the twin row disc harrow features a 230mm bearing assembly which again are gear oil-filled to be maintenancefree and offer huge longevity. The disc arms are rubber buffer block mounted to give excellent contour following and the hydraulic depth control system means change-on-the-move depth adjustment from 7 cm down to a maximum of 20 from the cab. The aggressive cutting angle of 22 degrees on the front row and 17 degrees on the back means maximum penetration and maximum mixing effect. Featured also on the new Certos, and in work for the first time in Britain, will be the new Matrix 650 wedge ring roller which gives an easy pull and optimum targeted reconsolidation in all soil types. The roller again is maintenance-free.

For catch crop or cover crop work, the Certos is also equipped with the GreenDrill 500 seeder box. On either side of the working depth spectrum, the Catros+ 5001-2TS will be showing off its prowess as a shallow stubble chitting machine making it ideal for stale seedbed preparation as well as, at the other extreme, the tine and disc combination mulch cultivator, the Cenius 5003-2TX. For the Cenius, available in working widths from 3.0 m through to 7.0 m, working depths of 8 cm down to 30 cm are possible with the 8 rows of tines creating the perfect mix of residue and soil in front of a row of levelling discs. Again the Cenius TX features the proven centre running gear, hydraulic depth adjustment and out-front guide wheels and choice of rear packer. On the five metre wide Cenius, the recently launched C-Mix 80HD wearing metal will be in work in public for the first time. The tungstencarbide inserts substantially improve wearability over the standard points and also reduce the draught requirement of the towing tractor to keep fuel consumption and running costs to a minimum For fans of complete inversion tillage, the Cayron 200-5V will be doing the honours in the furrow. On the drill front, the new AD-P Special power harrow drill combination will run alongside the six metre Cirrus grain and fertiliser cultivator drill and the low-disturbance Cayena tine seeder. The new AD-P Special is standard with electric drive, easy-adjust Exact following harrow and the new re-engineered RoTeC disc coulters as well as featuring the new shape wide-top hopper for easy filling and complete with roll-over hopper cover. Options on the AD-P Special are the TwinTerminal 3.0 remote calibration computer and maybe LED work lights for safe and convenient operation in the day or at night.

Importance of sprayer testing From Duncan Russell - NSTS Manager

............................................................................................................................................................................................... Everyone will agree that accurate application of pesticides is not only desirable but essential whether for the environmental, the consumer or the grower point of view. Accurate and targeted use of pesticides is all part of modern agriculture. That’s why back in the mid 90’s the Chemical Application members of the Agricultural Engineers Association (AEA) devised a test for application machinery to make sure it was working as intended and with a qualified operator would apply pesticides accurately and on target. In the early years of 2000 this test became the National Sprayer Testing Scheme as one of the main pillars of the Voluntary Initiative. Now NSTS is an accepted part of arable agriculture and requirement of the major crop assurance schemes and supermarket protocols, requiring that farmers and

growers have their sprayers inspected annually. Testing pesticide application equipment is about to become even more important as the Sustainable Use Directive requires that all pesticide application equipment is tested by 26th November 2016. The NSTS is available through a network of test centres who have qualified examiners available to inspect and confirm the equipment is of the standard required. The test is usually carried out at the owner’s premises at a mutually agreed convenient time. The examiner will charge for the inspection, NSTS have no input into the cost of individual tests; the cost being commercial at the point of use. Additionally machine owners are free to choose their nearest or preferred test centre a list of test centres can be found on the NSTS website www.nsts. org.uk Rea Valley Tractors Ltd

As confirmation of the result of the test the examiner will apply a pass sticker to the machine and give the owner a copy of the test report form. Other copies of the form are returned to NSTS Administration where the information is retained on a database of all tested machines. This information is available to crop assurance Certification Bodies for verification. Having an NSTS test ensures that the machine is working correctly and capable of delivering the correct dose on target. It also helps to reduce costly downtime and ensures reliability of an important piece of equipment used by farmers and growers.

Words of wisdom

From Steve Birchall Poultry Services Limited

............................................................................................................................................................................................... Industry developments and pressure from the supply chain are turning the spotlight on more efficient cleaning units as a way to increase performance while reducing antibiotics use. The packers and retailers are demanding less independance on the use of antibiotics to control disease so producers need to respond to this. To control disease and maintain production, the industry has to explore and adopt alternative ways to reduce the pathogen risk to birds. Better hygiene practices, based on more efficient cleaning of housing and equipment combined with strict biosecurity is an obvious starting point. It is entirely logical to get buildings as clean as possible before repopulating them to reduce the disease threat before the new birds arrive. New stock are under stress brought about by combination factors including transport, handling, vaccination and being exposed to new disease threats. The more hat can be done to reduce disease threats, the better. There is a real scope to improve the effectiveness of cleaning of all types of poultry housing but the starting point is a change of mind set. Too many producers regard cleaning as a “must do”, uninteresting and mundane chore, something that has to be done and the sooner it is done the better, however, nothing could be further from the truth. Cleaning should be seen as an integral part of a production system which can have a significant impact on performance, costs and profit. An efficient well planned and implemented cleaning procedure can reduce the disease threat to birds leading to better performance. It can also save time and reduce costs. An effective routine comprises of two different stages - cleaning and disinfection. Cleaning is essential to remove the environment in which pathogens thrive and to expose them to the subsiquent disinfectant. You can not disinfect dirt

unless soiling is removed, the pathogens will be protected from the disinfectant. The cleaning phase is crucial but this is not a case of taking an ardent approach with a high pressure power washer. While you can blast away some soiling, you will not remove the fats and proteins which make up much of the dirt on the walls and other surfaces. In addition, the use of high pressure creates an aerosol effect which can actually spread the pathogens and make them worse. To achieve an effective clean it is essential to apply a detergent and then to rinse away under low pressure followed by the application of disinfectant. Effective cleaning will help prevent the economic loss associated with outbreaks and is considerably cheaper than the cost of treating an outbreak with medicines. Using chemical detergents ensures that soiling is removed before disinfection resulting in a reduction in bacterial levels prior to restocking, giving the new birds the best possible start. Thorough cleaning based on a two stage routine could have a big impact on future profits and turn cleaning from a chore into a profit driver.
