New McCormick tractor dealership handles sales, service and parts in south Midlands AgriArgo UK appoints Rollason Engineering to McCormick network Supplying tractors, parts and service support in south Midlands McCormick range from 25hp to 230hp is ideal for diverse customers An enthusiastic new team at Rollason Engineering, a farm and garden machinery retailer that also undertakes service and repairs, is getting behind the McCormick tractor range. The business, located alongside the Fosse Way near Moreton Morrell, Warwickshire, has been awarded the McCormick sales, service and parts franchise for the south Midlands by GB distributor AgriArgo UK. “I’m really impressed by the enthusiasm shown by the Rollason staff for their new tractor enterprise,” says AgriArgo area sales manager Tim Lawrence. “Charlie Rollason and his team are determined to make a success of supporting our tractor users in the area.” The company’s McCormick territory, which is bisected by the M40 motorway, extends southwards from Coventry to Woodstock in Oxfordshire, and westwards from Northampton across northern Warwickshire to Redditch. Charlie Rollason has long had an affinity with farm
tractors and machinery from the days when his father ran a contracting business from the yard. He started his career by working for a local dealer for a time before becoming a self-employed ‘man in a van’ providing onfarm servicing and repairs. “We now represent some top-quality implement manufacturers in the area, notably Lemken and Vicon, as well as Suzuki quads,” he points out. “The ‘McCormick’ name is another mainstream brand to put above the door and means we can cater for every farmers’ needs.” Rollason Engineering employs two full-time service technicians: Dave Gilkes has past experience with heavy earthmoving plant while Roy Stubbins looked after a drainage contractor’s machinery before joining the business. Both are having comprehensive technical training on McCormick tractors. Jamie Warrender recently joined the company to manage ATV and garden machinery sales and service. These three relative newcomers to the business join parts manager Simon Holloway, who has plans to extend his store to hold a bigger stock of parts, consumables and sundries such as tools, clothing and hydraulic hoses, mainly from the Granit range. and machinery sales but still dons a pair of overalls when the workshop is especially busy. “This is the best team we’ve had in a long time,” declares Mr Rollason. “They’re very capable technically, have a positive attitude to customer service, especially during critical harvest periods, and they get on well with our farmer customers.” Apart from the line-up of sparkling new red and silver tractors in the yard, at least one of the current McCormick tractors can be seen every week at Rugby market – it’s all part of efforts to raise the profile of McCormick in the area, which began with stands at the Kenilworth Show and Upton House Horse Trials. “I took on the McCormick range largely because of the breadth of product available, which suits the different farming and other rural
enterprises we serve,” says Charlie Rollason. “We have the GM and X10 Series mechanical and hydrostatic drive compacts from 2550hp for our equine, parks and utility customers, right up to the 230hp X70 six-cylinder tractor for arable farmers.” Between those extremes are tractors like the new 85-113hp McCormick X50 series for livestock, horticultural and groundscare applications, and the mid-range 90-126hp X60 and MC series four-cylinder tractors, which perform in stock and arable farming roles. “Before taking on the McCormick range, I talked to users and other dealers and the positive responses reassured me I was doing the right thing,” says Mr Rollason. “People like the tractors; they say they are reliable and easy to use, and they’re priced right.
Charlie Rollason: “A good tractor franchise is a key foundation for an agricultural engineering business like ours and I believe we have that in the McCormick range.”

NRH ENGINEERING... How much notice do you take of the source of the machinery you purchase. Just take a quick stock of your current machines. The chances are that the tractors, combine and majority of the other prime machines are from Continental Europe or the USA. As little as one generation back it would have been a different picture with almost everything built in Britain. Back then foreign design and manufacturing was considered unsuitable and flimsy. How times have changed, now the reverse belief is held and import is considered the way forward as we rush blindly into further Globalisation. Perhaps now is the time to reverse the trend and to look at the best of British once again. Of course we do have several established manufacturers producing top quality machinery for our industry and you will probably be able to name nearly all. One that you might miss is N.R.H. Engineering from Seaton Ross in Yorkshire. N.R.H. Engineering took over and developed the Flexifarm range of machinery, producing a range of cultivation equipment built to the best of traditional British quality and design. Products include presses
and packers, subsoilers and Cambridge rolls to a wide variety of sizes and specifications. Why did we choose to supply N.R.H Engineering products? I had been looking for a used subsoiler and happened to stumble onto the N.R.H website, liked the look of some of the machines, and asked for further information. A while later we were asked to quote for a set of 12.3 metre Cambridge rolls to work on some of the typical heavy land found in the area. The customers key requirements were weight, transport stability, good ground contour following and of course price. I remembered the N.R.H. rolls and started to do some comparisons with the rolls available from our other suppliers. It soon became apparent that N.R.H. could provide the best solution.
overall weight (around 10 tons for the 12.3 metre set) will ensure good ground following and consolidation. High tensile axles with triple sealed greaseable bearings, 18 ply tyres, 4 spoke rings and centre support bearings will aid a long reliable life. Competitive pricing completes the package to make N.R.H. our first choice of rolls supplier in the future.
Although sales have been limited to rolls so far, we shall also be promoting N.R.H to our customers requiring items such as subsoilers or packers with perhaps a project to test their bespoke machinery arm. It has been a pleasant change to supply some British manufactured machinery and we look forward to a long and successful association.

Several variants of the rolls are available with 20 -24 inch diameters, breaker rings and working widths from 4.3 to 12.3 metres so there should be a set suitable for your farm. All models feature horizontal fully hydraulic folding ensuring an easy field to road transition and stable transport. Road width is just 3 metres. Central pivoting wings and the heavy

John Deere’s online harvest John Deere combines will be the stars of a new video campaign during this summer’s harvest, as part of the company’s ‘Let's meet in the field’ initiative. Expert operators from dealers in Scotland and East Anglia – Will Hutchison of Thomas Sherriff at Haddington, East Lothian and Andy Mennell of Ben Burgess at Newmarket, Suffolk – will be demonstrating the performance of John Deere S- and T-Series combines at various farms in their respective areas throughout the harvest period (weather permitting!) The drivers will be filming the progress of their individual combine demo tours, and the results will be posted weekly on a dedicated section of the John Deere website, at www.Deere-Tour.com The harvest tour footage will also be highlighted on the company’s Facebook and
YouTube channels. In addition, during each week of the tours visitors to the website will be able to play an online game, with the chance to win prize vouchers to spend at the John Deere Online Shop. The website will also provide details of the dealer drivers and technical features of the combines. “This is a great opportunity for farmers and contractors all over the country to see our top of the range combines at work, even if they can’t get to a local demo in person,” says John Deere Limited marketing manager Gordon Day. “Using a combination of video footage, our dedicated website and social media channels in this way means anyone can assess how John Deere’s rotary and tine separation technologies can benefit their own harvest operations.”

KRONE...
Drilling and chopping key to success with biogas maize Precision both at planting and when processing through the forage harvester are prerequisites for successful maize production for biogas, according to speakers at a recent Norfolk meeting where two leading farm equipment firms launched new products aimed squarely at the sector. On the back of the anaerobic digestion (AD) sector’s growth – as well as demand from dairy farms looking for more precise plant placement – Swedish drill and cultivation specialist Vaderstad has entered the UK precision drill market with a new range of machines initially available in 6- and 8-row versions with 75cm row spacings. Uniquely, the Tempo planters use a pressurised seed metering system combined with a short hopper-to-coulter distance to reduce sensitivity to slopes and vibration and allow faster operation. Planting accuracy can therefore be maintained at far higher forward speeds than have until now been possible, while at the same time reducing the number of misses and doubles. Continuous airflow separates the seeds and propels them into slots on
a rotating metering disc. The result is a seeder that can sow maize accurately – and accuracy is essential given each large plant’s need to absorb as much light as possible – at speeds as high as 18km/hr. Electric drive for seed metering allows for individual row unit shut off, simple seed rate calibration, and adjustment of rates on the move if required. A weight transfer system allows up to 325kg of pressure to be applied to the disc coulters, allowing for direct drilling in suitable soils. Trailing gauge wheels connected to a walking tandem mechanism cut vibration at high speeds. Press wheels follow directly behind. Each seed hopper capacities are 70 litres apiece, good for 2.5ha/row between fills depending on seed rates and row widths, while a fertiliser tank and coulter bar is optional. This places the fertiliser at 5cm to the side of the seed and 2cm below it, to provide rapid uptake by germinating seed without the risk of scorch. Meanwhile, forage harvesting specialist Krone has launched a new, specially-designed chopping
vicky@agri-news.co.uk | 07780 471481
cylinder which produces material of the length required to maximise methane production in AD plants. “A short chop allows the methanogenic bacterium to more quickly and easily break down the crop and produce gas,” says Krone’s Henrik Feldmann. “An AD plant is just like a cow, in that it requires quality forage, but the chop length it requires is much shorter, at under 7mm. Pieces longer than 20mm must be minimised, as they prevent good clamp compaction and allow the ingress of
air.” To meet this need, the firm has introduced a ‘biogas drum’ with 40 knives as opposed to the standard 28. The 660mm diameter cylinder, which is 800mm wide, is capable of 25,000 cuts/min, producing a length of cut from 2-12mm, encompassing the ideal 4-9mm band. “That’s 20 per cent more than standard, which translates to less fuel per tonne, and maximum throughput for a short length of chop.”

NEW HOLLAND...
New Holland quality on display in deals with Royal Welsh Agricultural Society New Holland quality on display in deals with Royal Welsh Agricultural Society and family-run fruit and vegetable farm The adaptability and reliability enjoyed by New Holland’s wide range of state-of-the-art machines was highlighted in a recent pair of deals in Wales. The Royal Welsh Agricultural Society chose family-run New Holland dealership T. Alun Jones & Son, based in Dryslwyn, Carmarthenshire, to supply its fleet with two new tractors: a compact T1570 and a larger T5.105. The machines’ reliability and flexibility will play a key role in helping to make a success of 2013’s Royal Welsh Show when it gets under way from July 22nd25th at the showground at Llanelwedd, Builth Wells. The agricultural event is one of the biggest and best-attended of its kind in Europe. Last year a record 240,000-plus visitors passed through the gates to enjoy its mix of displays, events and competitions. Royal Welsh Showground site foreman Tony Smith said: “We chose New Holland because we have had them before and we are used to the tractors and their reliability. We wanted
a bigger tractor with more horsepower for a flail mower – we’re up to over 100hp now with the T5.105. “We also went for the smaller T1570 sit-on mower which we needed as a replacement.” The four-wheel drive T5.105 is engineered for versatility, with a full range of PTO speeds, high visibility VisionView™ cab, and front and rear linkage. It is suited to take on a range of jobs with ease including transport, PTO and linkage work and is becoming a regular choice to support municipal and groundcare applications. Powered by Common Rail engines that fully comply with the stringent Tier 4A emission regulations, the T5 range benefits from a power-toweight ratio of a mere 37.3kg/ hp for outstanding performance and impressive fuel econ-

omy. The T1570 is a popular compact tractor mixing simple, proven design with modern dependability and low running costs, making it powerfully adaptable for tough jobs whether in landscaping, horticulture or agriculture. Offered with a choice of mechanical or hydrostatic transmissions, each model can be prepared for specific demands. With hydrostatic drive, turf tyres and a mowing deck, they are ideal for grounds maintenance, sports and amenity work. T. Alun Jones & Son Sales Manager Eirian Isaac said: “The Royal Welsh Show is a big, prestigious event
so we’re very pleased they came to us to provide reliable, versatile and cost-effective machines.” Another recent deal was with a farm in Gower which retained the blue brand to replace three 7740s with three T5.105s. Run by owner Tom Beynon, it is a working family farm which grows vegetables and runs a pick-yourown operation as well as a camp site. The new trio of blue tractors have been fitted with narrow tyres and it is their adaptability that makes them perfect for the farm’s wide range of agricultural and maintenance tasks – in the field, on the road or around the camp site.
