SMOOTH PLANNING
Agriplant Solutions LTD
A
GRIPLANT SOLUTIONS Offers a bespoke service that enables drives, tracks and yards to be reconstructed at an extremely cost efficient price. The process recycles existing materials but also allows the addition of other materials. “PROBABLY THE MOST ECONOMICAL AND ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY METHOD OF DRIVE AND ROAD CONSTRUCTION.” STAGE ONE - SITE SURVEY The process starts with an on site survey with the client. At this stage we establish what the client wishes to achieve. With the clients requirements firmly in mind, the site is surveyed thoroughly in order to determine the quality and quantity of existing material. What we look for is a material that when crushed will provide a good mixture of larger aggregate for stability and a quantity of fines to bind the job together. In most cases the crushing process will provide a good blend of the required materials but where the natural stone or previously imported structure doesn’t allow we would suggest additional material incorporation. The drainage is also assessed as this is the KEY to the longevity of the work carried out. Where the drainage is inadequate we will propose any solutions to the client. After the full appraisal he cost and method statement is given to the client. STAGE TWO - SITE PREPARATION & IMPORTING MATERIAL (WHERE REQUIRED) As a general starting point any
non usable material is then cleared from the site ie grass and debris. Where the site is topsoil or general mud and muck this is scraped away allowing the natural stone beneath to become usable. At this stage we would dress the area with the added materials if they were being used. Often broken concrete and brick rubble are added simply to make the most of FREE WASTE DISPOSAL! Where we recommend the addition of other material to improve the structure of the road or carpark we can generally find people grateful to dispose of the demolition waste so they have NO TIPPING CHARGES and you receive FREE AGGREGATE. STAGE THREE - CRUSHING THE SITE The Crusher is put into work is is set by the operator to the correct work depth and the hydraulic doors adjusted in accordance to the processed aggregate size required. Following the first pass the material is assessed, if the processed product is not worked down sufficiently the grader will make another pass. On demolition by products the process may need repeating three times and in rare occasions more. STAGE FOUR - GRADING THE SITE Once ALL the composites are crushed and blended level and grading of the grading process is then started. Any remaining humps and hollows are evened. Passes are made from various different directions to ensure that the aggregate is uniform.
Tel: 07780 471481 | Email: info@agri-news.co.uk
In accordance with the information gathered from the initial site assessment, the grader is used to pitch the site relative to the drainage and site requirements. STAGE FIVE - COMPACTION OF THE SITE The site is then compacted with a vibrating roller or compaction plates. This will displace any air pockets trapped within and consolidates the aggregates solidly together. This methods allows traffic to use the road instantly STAGE SIX FINAL ASSESMENT AND SIGN OFF The finished result is outstanding and wear rates are proven to be durable. The surfaces will last anything from 5 to 10 years depending upon traffic. Using this method a drive could be reinstated up to 5 times over and it would still not cost the comparable cost of concrete or tarmac. IF THIS SERVICE IS OF INTEREST BUT YOU REQUIRE A LONGER LASTING SERVICE PLEASE SEE OUT CHEMICAL FIXING / GROUND STABILIZATION PAGE CHEMICALS CAN EASILY BE ADDED IN A LOW COST For more information please call Marcus on 07875 299669

Twin Successes For CLAAS Tractor

XION 800 wins awards for “Tractor of the Year 2014” and “Machine of the Year 2014” Hanover, November 2013. The CLAAS AXION 800 was the recipient of two awards at the AGRITECHNICA 2013 trade fair in Hanover – “Tractor of the Year 2014” and “Machine of the Year 2014”. The prestigious international “Tractor of the Year” prize is awarded every year by an independent jury of selected agricultural trade journalists. This year, having evaluated the best tractors on the market the 23-person jury awarded the most coveted “Tractor of the Year 2014” award to the CLAAS AXION 850. “Receiving this award is a very special moment for us”, stated Jan-Hendrik Mohr, Managing Director of Sales Division of CLAAS GLOBAL SALES GmbH, who accepted the award on behalf of the company. “The award is actually extra special because we are currently celebrating 10 years of CLAAS Tractor as well as our 100-year company anniversary.” Award presentation „Machine of the year 2014“ (from the left): Matthias Mumme (chief editor traction), Christophe Perge (CLAAS Tractor), Alexander Reinhardt (CLAAS Tractor), Thierry Garrigues (CLAAS Tractor), Friedrich Rüther (CLAAS Vertriebsgesellschaft), Lothar Kriszun (executive board, tractors), Karsten Schranz (traction), Detlef Steinert (chief editor dlz Agrarmagazin). The “Machine of the Year” award is presented every two years by the

technology editors of the Deutscher Landwirtschaftsverlag (dlv) publishing house for the best innovations in agricultural technology. The prize in the large tractor category was this year awarded to CLAAS with its AXION 800 CMATIC. Explaining its decision, the jury stated: “The stepless transmission is operated using the CMOTION operating lever, which is one of the most ergonomic controls on the market. The CEBIS control terminal also allows the operator to make extensive adjustments. We particularly liked the simple engine/ transmission management system. The easily adjusted engine torque function for various types of operation lowers fuel consumption and increases economic efficiency”. The new AXION 800 was launched in February at the SIMA trade fair in Paris and the first machines equipped with the HEXASHIFT transmission are now also going on sale. The range was extended with the launch of the new stepless transmission version of the AXION 800 CMATIC at the Agritechnica 2013 trade fair.

MACHINERY FOR 2014
T
he FarmGEM Company was formed in July 2009 and as they enter their fifth year the growth of the business and machine portfolio has been astounding. This is down to several key factors, fantastic UK dealer support, that the GEM Sprayers brand is still held in a very high regard by many growers and the fact that FarmGEM are producing equally strong and reliable machines and backing that up with a three year construction warranty. The company is headed up by Terry Fixter, Managing Director and Cliff Buck, Sales and marketing Director with several other ex-GEM staff also very much involved, bringing easily over one hundred years of combined crop sprayer experience to the company. The main office and parts stores are based in Southwell, Nottinghamshire with tractor mounted and trailed machines being manufactured in Debrecen, Hungary and self-propelled in Lincolnshire UK. The fact that the machines are manufactured in Europe brings several advantages, the main one
being the access to easily deliver their machines into many markets other than the UK and Ireland. They have already appointed dealers and delivered machines into Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Bulgaria and even have machines working in the Philippines and The Democratic Republic of the Congo. That said the UK and Irish markets remain key and they have been able to establish a comprehensive dealer network throughout to supply and support their sprayers. Although a completely new range of sprayers has been designed and developed they have a clear link to the original Gem Sprayer quality but are compliment with a new generation of booms and chassis’s and tanks for both trailed and mounted ranges, along with modern styling. So the range now comprises of mounted machines with tank capacities from 200 litres to 1900 litres and boom widths from 8m to 26m. The trailed sprayer range boasts three models, the Quartz, Diamond and GEM-Trak which can provide tank capacities from 2500 litres to 6000 litres and boom

options from 18 to 30 metres. FarmGEM also offer a JCB Fastrac de-mount sprayer which is still proving to be very popular and to complete the range the Sapphire II self propelled sprayer provides the larger farmer or contractor with capacities up to 6000 litres and 36 metre boom widths. At the LAMMA Show 2013 the most recent additions to the FarmGEM sprayer range were launched. Continued customer demand for a mounted sprayer with a 24 metre gull wing boom led FarmGEM to invest in developing a new mounted sprayer. The NEW FSE1600 with a 12/20, 21 or 24m gull wing boom along with a new front mounted tank range. Although several manufacturers have stopped manufacturing a mounted sprayer with a gull wing boom and now focus on only a vertical fold boom on their mounted machines. FarmGEM feel this is not the answer for everyone, as many

farmers and contractors do not like the more light weight design of the vertical fold boom along with all its wearing fold joints. But prefer the stronger more robust build of a gull wing boom. Also new is the FT 3 point linkage mounted front tank range offer both 1200 litre and 1400 litre tank sizes which have been designed to provide maximum forward visibility. Hydraulically driven transfer/agitation pump, in-cab electronic control, dry tank contents gauge and road lighting are all included in the standard specification. Finally the Quartz trailed sprayer, a lower specification trailed sprayer joins the UK offering. The Quartz was originally designed due to the high demand from Eastern European dealers and customers. The Quartz offers either a 2500 or 3000 litre tank, booms from 18 -24m. Although designed to complement the more highly specified Diamond and GEM-Trak models
the Quartz still has plenty features of its own. Including clean water tank and flushing system, chemical induction hopper, clothing locker, 13mm stainless steel spraylines, full electronic control of main on/ off, 5 boom sections and pressure adjustment. The Quartz uses the same booms that are fitted to the both Diamond and GEM-Trak. As with the former Gem Sprayer range, high quality and strength remain key. If you wish to discuss any particular features please contact your local dealer or FarmGEM directly on 01636 819911. New Specialist Dealer We are extremely pleased to
announce the appointment of another sprayer specialist dealer for the FarmGEM range of crop sprayers. South East Lincolnshire will now be covered by S & K Sprayer Services. The company is based in Alford, Lincolnshire and was formed in 2006 by Simon Kitchen, they provide servicing, repairs and parts for all makes of crop sprayers and have over forty years combined experience within the team. So you can see why S & K Sprayer services are a fantastic addition to the FarmGEM dealer network. Come and see FarmGEM at the S & K Sprayer Services Open day on Friday 6th December at Units 4 & 5 Hardwick Court, Beechings Way, Alford, LN13 9JE.

MACHINERY John Deere at Agritechnica 2013
F
ollowing their European launch in Germany this summer, all John Deere’s new and updated products for 2014 were on display at this year’s Agritechnica exhibition in Hanover (12–16 November 2013). Of the 70 new agricultural and turf products announced in August, visitors were able to see 27 tractor models from 80 to 120hp, the latest combines, round balers, mower-conditioners, sprayers and Gator utility vehicles, and the new silver award winning Hitch Assist and Smart Irrigation Systems. With a total of five gold and 23 silver medal awards since 2001, John Deere is an industry leading innovator. This year’s stand was designed around nine separate product hubs displaying key John Deere solutions for a range of different customers, farm sizes and specialisations, with the focus on performance, uptime and low cost of operation. Other features of the 6500m2 exhibit included a wide-screen cinema with seating for 60 people, a John Deere shop with the
latest merchandise for customers and fans of the brand, a customer centre and a dedicated dealer area. The centrally located customer centre featured John Deere FarmSight, finance and product support solutions, including PowerGard maintenance and protection programmes, parts and other aftermarket services. New product details, technical data and other company related information were provided by state-of-the-art ‘innovation towers’, numerous touch-screen tables and John Deere product representatives equipped with a total of 230 iPad computers. New combine app launched at Agritechnica Setting and optimisation of John Deere combines has just got easier. The new GoHarvest mobile phone app announced at Agritechnica 2013 in Hanover, Germany, is now available as a free download for smartphones and tablets using both the Android and iOS operating systems. Following the launch of the JDLink mobile app last year, this
latest application allows operators to optimise their combine easily and always have the recommended John Deere settings to hand. In addition to the combine settings, the app also allows the user to improve performance by focusing on specific machine areas and evaluating losses. The operator simply chooses the combine model – W, T or S-Series – and crop type. GoHarvest then suggests initial settings for the selected crop both inside the cab and around the machine using a series of straightforward menus, tips and yes/no options, illustrated by clear photographs and diagrams. The app also features a notes section, a help page and a link to John Deere’s online dealer locator. In addition, GoHarvest is easy to use in the field for changing and recording the combine settings as harvesting conditions change. GoHarvest is available in seven languages (English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish) from the Apple App Store and Google Play.

SPECIALIST Looking Out For Your Dogs - The Importance Of Microchips
A
microchip has a unique code which when scanned with a special reader can be matched to the owner’s details on a central database. It is inserted by a vet in a simple procedure which is quick and painless. Rescue centres, animal wardens and vets are all able to scan for this permanent form of identification. It is very important to keep your pet’s chip details up-to-date with your contact details so you can be contacted if your pet is found. If you move house or change telephone numbers, remember to let your chip provider know. From April 2016 it will be a legal requirement for all dogs in England to be microchipped Identifying your pet is an important part of responsible ownership. Every year rescue centres take in thousands of stray dogs and cats, many of which are not reunited with their owners as there is no way of tracing who they belong to. So how can you avoid your pet becoming one of the statistics? How is the microchip implanted? In the UK the microchip is implanted under the skin between the shoulder blades. The process is carried out by a suitably trained person. It is not carried out under anesthetic. Once implanted correctly the microchip is unlikely to fail and so provides lifelong permanent identification. Is it going to hurt my pet? Microchipping just feels like a small pinch or mild sting – akin to a minor injection. The dog does not feel the chip at all after it has been inserted. How does the microchip stay in place? Once the microchip has been inserted, the dog’s body tissue surrounding the micro-
chip attaches itself, preventing movement of the chip. What do I need to do once my dog has been chipped? The microchip number itself is meaningless. Owners need to register the microchip number as well as their details with an appropriate computerised database. Some chippers will register the number for the owner – Dogs Trust, for examples, registers all the dogs we chip. However, it is essential that the databases are kept up to date and that the owners themselves update their personal details where necessary, such as after a change of address. Who can access the database? A recognised PIN number/ password should be provided before data can be released. PIN numbers are issued by microchip distributors and databases to authorised persons only. Those are local authority staff (usually dog wardens), veterinary practices and animal welfare charities. How is the identification number read? Microchips work when a scanner is passed over them. This is because the scanner produces low frequency radio waves that passively activate the microchip, allowing the unique number to be read. Who retains scanners? It is estimated that there are currently over 10,000 scanners in use throughout the UK. These can be found at most veterinary practices, Local Authorities and animal welfare groups. Local Authorities and animal welfare groups use scanners to check stray dogs to see if they have been microchipped. If the dog has been microchipped he can then be returned to the owner easily and quickly.

s an experienced gun dog breeder I found it hard to find reliable providers of services such as microchipping and ultrasound scanning, without visiting a veterinary surgery. Taking young puppies to the vets can be an ordeal, and even with older animals a trip to the vets can be time consuming, difficult and expensive, especially for those who do not drive or have difficulty getting out and about. I started my business looking to bridge this gap by offering a safe, reliable and professional service without the hassle of a visit to the vets. Detectadog canine services is based on the Herefordshire/Wales border and offers
mobile micro chipping and for all your pets and animals. As a member of the national dog tattoo register I can also offer mobile tattooing. The service includes the added bonus of a free health check including nails and ears. From February 2014 I will be able to offer mobile ultrasound scanning of a wide variety of pets and animals. SPECIALIST Keeping Your Home And Farm Safe
L
eading rural insurer NFU Mutual is warning farmers to review their farmyard security following a sharp rise in tractor and quad thefts. New figures show that the value of tractor claims increased by 35% in the two months to the end of January compared with the corresponding period last year, reversing the downward trend enjoyed since the end of 2012. The agri-crime wave is not restricted to tractors. Over two months (to the end of January) thefts of quad bikes have also shot up. The shock rise comes after a prolonged period of falling tractor thefts since they peaked in 2010. It also follows a period of intense activity to improve tractor security and policing which has involved farmers, police forces throughout the UK, the Borders Agency and NFU Mutual. Over the past two years, manufacturers have started to introduce unique keys to most tractor models, the CESAR marking system has become widespread on new tractors, as has been retro-fitting to older machines. Clive Harris, who leads NFU Mutual’s vehicle security initiative, said: “The sudden increases in farm vehicle theft is very worrying – particularly as it comes after tractor theft fell by over 32% in the first 11 months of 2012 – a fantastic result. “High value tractors worth £25,000
or more – and particularly those with front end loaders – are the most commonly stolen tractors at present. Thieves are also increasingly targeting telescopic loaders, quads and utility vehicles. “Our experience helping country people who have been victims of rural crime clearly shows that theft has an emotional and financial impact on their lives and fortunes.” NFU Mutual LogoFor this reason NFU Mutual gives financial and practical support to help reduce crime and improve rural communities. NFU Mutual is one of the stakeholders who fund the Plant and Agricultural National Intelligence Unit and the ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers) Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service, which coordinates police in challenging agricultural vehicle theft resulting in 21 tractors being brought back to the UK last year alone. Clive warned would-be purchasers of tractors, quads and utility vehicles to ensure sellers had proof of ownership and advised farmers who had quads stolen that thieves would often return a few weeks later to try and steal a replacement machine. NFU Mutual offers premium discounts of up to 27.5% for members who fit approved security measures including CESAR database registration marking in conjunction with a P5 Thatcham Approved tracking system
to tractors. NFU Mutual is also helping farmers fight rural crime by sponsoring national and regional rural crime conferences; liaising with police and local Farm Watch groups. It runs the annual Country Crime Fighters Awards to promote examples of good security initiatives from individuals, groups and the police. Farm vehicle security checklist: Have CESAR marking fitted to tractors and other farm vehicles Consider immobilizers and Tracker devices for high value agricultural vehicles If the vehicle has a unique key, always remove and secure cars, tractors, and other vehicles when unattended Use security lighting in yards and drives Physically secure ATVs by means of suitable locking devices or heavy duty security chains and padlocks Park all agricultural vehicles and equipment out of sight in enclosed locked storage when not in use and overnight. Record machinery serial numbers Lock up tools and equipment out of sight Keep farm yard gates closed and locked wherever possible Consider installation of remote controlled gates for ease of daily access Join a Farm Watch scheme

ore than 230 top ploughmen from all over Britain will compete this autumn in the 2013 British National Ploughing Championships at Llanwarne, near Hereford by kind permission of Mrs I E Williams and family. Two busy days - Saturday and Sunday, October 12th and 13th - will be packed with competitions for many types of plough and styles of ploughing, and will climax when the two top ploughmen are selected to represent England at the 2014 World Ploughing Contest in France next year. The site, which is located approximately 8 miles south of Hereford (on the A466 Hereford to Monmouth trunk road) covers 200 acres and has excellent facilities for competitors and public, with easy access by road and plenty of car parking space. Main sponsors of the Championships are Goodyear and Firestone, and we expect upwards of 15,000 spectators spread over the two days of the Championships. The Championships are returning to Herefordshire for the first time in twenty-seven years and we are delighted to be invited back to the county this year. Already the Championships have attracted considerable interest in the immediate area and surrounding counties and we are looking forward to a first class event. Visitors will see not only the highly skilled competition ploughing and an extensive trade stand area but also attractions such as vintage tractors, ploughs and equipment; steam plough-
ing engines; a craft marquee with a wide variety of stands; and demonstrations of the latest tractors, farm machinery and equipment under working conditions. On the first day the ploughmen will compete in two classes: reversible and conventional. Those who qualify will go through to the finals on the second day to find the two national champions. The first day also sees the final of the National Young Farmers’ Ploughing Championships, the David Brown Ploughing Championship, horticultural (or garden tractors), high cut tractor ploughing and horse ploughing. On the second day, lovers of classic machinery and equipment will enjoy three classes for vintage tractor ploughing - with trailing ploughs, hydraulic ploughs and classic ploughs - and 75 area champions competing for the honour of being the British Vintage Champion Ploughman and going on to represent England in the European Vintage Ploughing Championships next year. There will also be horse ploughing, the Ferguson Ploughing Championship, horticultural ploughing and high cut tractor ploughing. One of the major “family” attractions will be the horse
ploughing with around a dozen pairs of heavy horses at work each day. Magnificently turned out with ornate brass and leather harness, these true farm ‘workhorses’ will be seen competing to produce the best general purpose ploughing on the first day and the stylish traditional ‘high cut’ work on the second day. There is a unique vintage display this year, themed “From Potato to Crisp” which will show various machinery used for potatoes over the years and also will include (weather permitting), lifting potatoes and making them into crisps. Potatoes were planted by local school children earlier in the year so they can learn about the process of how they get into the packet.

SUZUKI PUT A STOP TO ILLEGAL GREY IMPORTING OF ATVS IN TO THE UK
SUZUKI PUT A STOP TO ILLEGAL GREY IMPORTING OF ATVS IN TO THE UK
S
uzuki GB PLC (SGB) has recently concluded a case putting a stop to sales of illegal grey market Suzuki ATVs being imported and sold within the UK market. Grey import vehicles are cars, motorcycles and other motor vehicles imported from overseas, but not through Suzuki’s official distribution arrangement. The illegal importing of vehicles to the UK can have significant impacts on both manufacturers and end users. In some cases the imported ATVs may not meet UK regulations such as CE marking, leaving owners or employers vulnerable, particularly from a Health and Safety perspective. A High Court Judgment was obtained against Leek/Staffs based traders G&B Flexitowers (a firm) – owned by Geoffrey Keith Bailey and Steven Brian Fernyhough. The Court has ordered G&B Flexitowers, and its partners, Geoffrey Keith Bailey and Steven Brian 28 | AGRINEWS | Issue 26| December 2013
Fernyhough, to pay damages and costs to SGB, has forbidden them from any future infringements of Suzuki’s trademark rights and ordered them to disclose full details of their infringing activities including supply and sales lines to SGB. “We are very pleased to have put a stop to sales of these illegal grey import Suzuki ATVs in the UK. The illegal importing of ATVs is not just frowned upon, it can have some very serious consequences for the purchaser. These buyers won’t receive the same great level of service they could expect from an official Suzuki dealer, nor will their dealer have had the proper Suzuki training that all official dealers are provided. Also, an ATV bought on the grey market may affect your ability to get the ATV serviced and will result in difficulties when selling a non-European model.” commented Gareth Lumsdaine, ATV Sales and Marketing Manager, Suzuki GB.

ATV’S
Honda Winter Advice
W
inter throws at us many different weather conditions – fog, frost, snow, sleet, ice – all of which have the capacity to significantly alter the terrain. Added to which, colder temperatures and shorter days make riding a real challenge. So, to make sure that you get through the season safe and sound, here are a few tips from Honda’s ATV riding expert, Lindsay Shields. Power: “Batteries don’t respond well to cold temperatures, so check that both the battery on your ATV as well as the one that powers your mobile phone is fully charged.” Keep in contact: “People knowing where you are is crucial, as is factoring in time for them to start getting worried about you and actually get to you. All told, this could double or triple the time that you had anticipated being out.” Clothing: “Make sure you’re dressed for the conditions you’re going out in and also, for what might come along. Weather turns quickly – make sure you’ve got extra layers to keep you warm.” Attachments: “Snowploughs, winches and salt spreaders can
30 | AGRINEWS | Issue 26| December 2013
all help make life easier and are easily fitted to your ATV.” Riding style: “In winter, traction won’t be great and stopping distances will be longer. Engine braking efficiencies are reduced because of the grip available to tyres on frozen surface so you need to think ahead when dealing with hills – especially when you’re towing a trailer. Ascending, you might lose traction so consider your exit routes carefully. Descending, select the straightest unblocked exit. Your engine will hold you at, say, 2mph with the throttle closed but if you end up in a slide, the only way to get your steering back is to accelerate and get the wheels turning at the speed you’re sliding. You don’t want to be doing that with a big tree in your way! “The front shape of an ATV is angled upwards and, in snow, it acts a bit like a snowplough. So, if you hit snow at speed, the ATV will try to climb it. At best, you could lose steering but at worst, you could end up sitting on a heap of snow with no drive – so, drive slowly! Conditions: Frost and snow offer zero
grip and because ATVs have low ground pressure footprints, the weight of the machine over deep, snowy surfaces can make it easy for it to sink down and sit on its undertray. If this happens, the wheels then won’t be touching anything in order to propel you forward. “Of all the weather conditions, I think that fog is probably the most challenging. It can descend quickly and leave you completely disorientated, taking away your usual reference points. If you can see the track in front of you, don’t deviate from it and take things slowly. If you can’t, call for help. Best of all, if fog is on the cards, stay close to home.” Honda offers a range of bespoke accessories for its ATVs including a heated grip kit – for more information, give your local dealer a call to discuss you own requirements. Dealer locater at www.honda.co.uk/atv. Honda offers a free EASI Rider Course® with every new Honda ATV. Ask your Authorised Honda dealer to register you for a course - it’s well worth it as it can qualify in risk assessments for PUWER or HSE requirements. Contact your local Honda dealer today.
