MACHINERY MERLO AWARDED A GOLD MEDAL FOR INNOVATIONS The Merlo Telescopic Handler 40.7 Hybrid has been awarded a gold medal by the experts from the independent Agritechnica Innovations Commission, and was announced by the German Agricultural Society (DLG). The Merlo Hybrid was chosen among 400 innovations that were submitted thanks to its practical application, consumption & pollution reduction. In brief because it’s a product that better interprets the evolution of modern agriculture. This Gold medal is the second award that Agritechnica has given to a Merlo Product following the Silver medal of the Multifarmer 30.6 in 2001 and comes at the dawn of the company’s 50th anniversary since it was founded in 1964. Merlo Hybrid telehandler Merlo will show his latest hybrid telehandler 40.7 version at his stand on which is mounted the innovative and patented series parallel hybrid architecture. Merlo objective is to make available a telehandler with a Diesel electrohydraulic hybrid system. The modular hybrid system will be characterized by high degree of versatility and can be used both indoors and outdoors: Indoors: Greenhouses, cattle sheds
and food processing; Outdoors: any application since it can work in both a full electric and a hybrid mode. The relevant advantages can be summarized as follows: Ensuring the performance level of conventional Merlo machines Reducing fuel consumption Reducing noise emissions Reducing pollution The Hybrid is equipped with a diesel engine with less than 56 kW instead of 100kW or more. It does not require any installation of a urea system, allowing the machine to work in a full electric mode for indoor operations with an astonishing average autonomy of operation as follows: 4 hours in Eco mode 2 hours in full electric. It offer a modular solution which can be integrated in the current layout of Merlo machines and extend this application to the whole future range of Merlo telehandlers. The performance level of conventional Merlo machines is guaranteed in terms of acceleration, pulling force, maximum speed, load handling time and load capacity. Fuel consumption in an average work cycle is reduced by at least 30% compared to a conventional Merlo machine. Noise emissions are significantly lower in the hy-

brid mode, because the Diesel engine runs at low rpm. Furthermore, noise emissions in the full electric mode are close to zero, as they are comparable to background noise in the work environment. Pollution is reduced because a smaller engine is used at a steady rpm for work stages whose specific fuel consumption is low. Furthermore, the batteries can be recharged from either the mains or local solar panel energy network installed by the end user, allowing the vehicle to work always in a full electric mode with no exhaust emissions. Repeated tests, performed both on test benches and on a test track, have proved that operation in the full electric mode guarantees the traction and lifting performance required, and it allows the vehicle to be used indoor with an autonomy of a few hours depending on the type of activity to be carried out. Considering the fuel saving that the new Merlo hybrid system ensures Vs the correspondent “traditional” version with only thermic engine, the payback for the owner is of about two years (depending of course on the number of hours and of the kind of activity).

The new XERION – Same Concept, Enhanced Engineering
C
LAAS will be once again be presenting the XERION – the world’s most powerful tractor with an infinitely variable drive – at Agritechnica in 2013. The 4x4 large tractor series with over 500 hp has been given a new engine, a new look, greater comfort, and is now called XERION 4000, 4500 and 5000. The XERION has established itself firmly in both arable and specialist applications. This will continue with the new range, where the XERION’s main roles will still be heavy cultivation and slurry and digestate distribution, but also for use on the silage clamp and in other specialist appications such as woodchippers and mulchers. Its proven TRAC concept has not been changed: Four wheels of equal size on steered axles with a tyre diameter of up to 2.16 m Infinitely variable ground drive up to 530 hp 50 km/h maximum ground speed Full frame design. The TRAC concept is available in three variants: TRAC (cab fixed in the centre), TRAC VC (rotating cab) and SADDLE TRAC (cab fixed at the front), and works with a wide variety of attachments. Full performance potential at low engine speeds The latest development in terms of inner workings are the six-cylinder engines from Mercedes Benz. These use SCR catalytic converter technology to meet the Stage IV (Tier 4) exhaust gas purification standard. The common-rail engines achieve maximum torque at as low as 1300 rpm and remain torque-stable over a wide engine speed range. This is of particular benefit to users in high-traction applications, e.g. cultivation, because it reduces fuel consumption. The XERION 4000 has the OM 470 LA engine with an 11-litre cubic capacity under its hood. The two larger models, the XERION 4500 and 5000, are driven by the OM 471 LA 4 | AGRINEWS | Issue 25 | November 2013
with a 13-litre cubic capacity. Two infinitely variable transmission types CLAAS offers the XERION with two infinitely variable transmission types: The ZF Eccom 4.5 and the Eccom 5.0. Each one performs different functions. As always, the ZF Eccom 4.5 covers a number of particular functions in the TRAC and TRAC VC models. These include driving forwards and in reverse with full power and full speed both available. PTO coupling is part of standard equipment; an additional high output hydraulic system is available as optional equipment for the ZF Eccom 4.5. An additional 90 kW of power can be used by employing this additional hydraulic circuit. By contrast, the ZF Eccom 5.0 trans-
mission, which is more cost effective and weighs around 700 kg less, is available with or without PTO coupling as desired. Its maximum speed when reversing is limited to 30 km/h. The ZF Eccom 5.0 is ideally suited to farms that require a XERION TRAC when working on the fields. It is therefore available as optional equipment for all TRAC models; it is included in the XERION SADDLE TRAC 4000 as standard. Streamlined, dynamic, distinctive Another new feature of the XERION series is the cross bracing between the side members of the chassis, which is now bolted on rather than welded. This increases the load-bearing capacity of the chassis when used with heavy slurry tanks and implements. The new inner
workings of the XERION will also be visible from the outside in its distinctive design. Although its large dimensions have not changed, it now works in a more streamlined and dynamic way. Its lack of exhaust pipe is particularly striking. It has been removed from the driver’s field of vision and is now located on the right-hand side underneath the cab. Gentle giant An important customer request for even greater driving comfort was taken into account during the development work on the new XERION model series. CLAAS now offers the new models in the TRAC and TRAC VC variants with optional semi-active cab suspension. This controls the damper stiffness depending on the particular driving conditions and improves suspension comfort. Semi-active suspension can be preselected from the cab in three levels according to the application: firm (e.g. for driving on the roads), soft (e.g. working on the fields) and locked (for special uses, e.g. wood chopping). Another small but very important detail that XERION customers asked for and CLAAS has now provided in the new models series are the new ergonomic pedals. Intuitive and ergonomic operation made extremely EASY New developments in EASY (Efficient Agriculture Systems) – which demonstrates CLAAS’s expertise in electronics – are equally as important for the XERION. In addition to a CEBIS control terminal, a CMOTION ground speed control lever, ISOBUS compatibility and a TELEMATICS connection, the new XERION already meets all the requirements for working together with TONI, ICT and task management, the future technologies for communication between attached machines and the tractor. The new XERION is available from January 2014.

PLOUGHING CHAMPIONSHIPS
63rd British National Ploughing Championships
M
ore than 230 top ploughmen from all over Britain will compete this autumn in the 2013 British National Ploughing Championships at Llanwarne, near Hereford by kind permission of Mrs I E Williams and family. Two busy days - Saturday and Sunday, October 12th and 13th - will be packed with competitions for many types of plough and styles of ploughing, and will climax when the two top ploughmen are selected to represent England at the 2014 World Ploughing Contest in France next year. The site, which is located approximately 8 miles south of Hereford (on the A466 Hereford to Monmouth trunk road) covers 200 acres and has excellent facilities for competitors and public, with easy access by road and plenty of car parking space. Main sponsors of the Championships are Goodyear and Firestone, and we expect upwards of 15,000 spectators spread over the two days of the Championships. The Championships are returning to Herefordshire for the first time in twenty-seven years and we are delighted to be invited back to the county this year. Already the Championships have attracted considerable interest in the immediate area and surrounding counties and we are looking forward to a first class event. Visitors will see not only the highly skilled competition ploughing and an extensive trade stand area but also attractions such as vintage tractors, ploughs and equipment; steam plough-
ing engines; a craft marquee with a wide variety of stands; and demonstrations of the latest tractors, farm machinery and equipment under working conditions. On the first day the ploughmen will compete in two classes: reversible and conventional. Those who qualify will go through to the finals on the second day to find the two national champions. The first day also sees the final of the National Young Farmers’ Ploughing Championships, the David Brown Ploughing Championship, horticultural (or garden tractors), high cut tractor ploughing and horse ploughing. On the second day, lovers of classic machinery and equipment will enjoy three classes for vintage tractor ploughing - with trailing ploughs, hydraulic ploughs and classic ploughs - and 75 area champions competing for the honour of being the British Vintage Champion Ploughman and going on to represent England in the European Vintage Ploughing Championships next year. There will also be horse ploughing, the Ferguson Ploughing Championship, horticultural ploughing and high cut tractor ploughing. One of the major “family” attractions will be the horse plough-
ing with around a dozen pairs of heavy horses at work each day. Magnificently turned out with ornate brass and leather harness, these true farm ‘workhorses’ will be seen competing to produce the best general purpose ploughing on the first day and the stylish traditional ‘high cut’ work on the second day. There is a unique vintage display this year, themed “From Potato to Crisp” which will show various machinery used for potatoes over the years and also will include (weather permitting), lifting potatoes and making them into crisps. Potatoes were planted by local school children earlier in the year so they can learn about the process of how they get into the packet.

MACHINERY KVERNELAND 150 PLOUGH SERIES NOW WITH HYDRAULIC VARI-WIDTH
F
ollowing the introduction of the Kverneland 150B (shear bolt) and 150S (leaf spring auto reset) lightweight reversible ploughs, the company has extended its latest plough range to include hydraulic vari-width on both types. Called the 150 Variomat, the new version brings hydraulic furrow width adjustment from 30-50cm (12-20in), for those who frequently adjust furrow widths to get the best output from available tractor horsepower and soil conditions. “A simple shift from 12in to 18in furrow widths will yield a 30% increase in working width,” explains Kverneland plough specialist Adam Burt. “Fuel consumption is not proportional, which brings greater efficiency to ploughing. And a wider furrow width generates more clearance too, for those dealing with stripped or chopped straw.” The 150 Variomat plough comes in three- four- and five-furrow versions, with a 150mm x 150mm induction heat-treated main frame used on all models. Despite the bigger frame than the non-Variomat models, the plough doesn’t need vast amounts of horsepower to be handled, nor lifted. Kverneland says the 150 Variomat is suitable for tractors up to a maximum of 150hp.
The plough gets a one-piece headstock design that keeps the implement as close to the tractor as possible to reduce lift requirement. The main shaft is a 110mm diameter, heat-treated design, engineered for maximum strength, while cross shaft options include Cat II, Cat III and quick coupler types. A 70/75cm underbeam clearance is used for the 150 S Variomat, while the B Variomat is 80cm. Both share an 85/100cm interbody clearance for optimum performance in various soil and surface conditions. Front furrow width adjustment can be either the standard turnbuckle or optional hydraulic adjustment. Kverneland’s 130-year expertise in plough manufacture has enabled the factory to forge tailor-made boron steel and apply unequal heat treatment technology to the entire plough to create a lightweight but strong fabrication. The 150 Variomat range is priced from £13,057.

MACHINERY John Deere awarded two silvers at Agritechnica 2013
T
wo John Deere innovations have been awarded silver medals at Agritechnica, the world’s leading agricultural equipment trade fair being held in Hanover, Germany, from November 11 to 17. The new John Deere Hitch Assist system is designed to make the coupling of implements and trailers to the tractor hitch quicker, easier and safer. The driver only needs to leave the cab once to use a set of external fender-mounted switches to move the tractor backwards and forwards at a maximum speed of 12mm/second, or to lift the hitch. This reduces the set-up time needed, particularly for those who need to change implements regularly, as well as the heightened risk of accidents or injuries from repeatedly climbing on and off the tractor. A series of in-built safety checks and warning signals ensure that the pro-
cess is completely safe to use, and the system is only operational if noone is sitting on the tractor driver’s seat. The John Deere Hitch Assist system will be a standard feature on the new 4049R 49hp and 4065R 65hp compact utility tractors, which are aimed at small farms and smallholders, local authorities, greenkeepers, groundsmen and large property owners. The newly designed John Deere Smart Irrigation System allows more efficient use of water, nutrients, energy and labour by combining irrigation with the application of fertilisers to agricultural crops. This complete ‘one-stop shop’ solution consists of four main, fully integrated components: highly accurate RTK-based steering of both the tractor and implement for the precise installation of drip tapes – this enables optimum water and

o increase flexibility for the owner/customer, Kverneland Accord has developed a hydraulic variable telescopic frame. The machine is based on an entire new frame concept that allows the customer to quickly change row widths from a minimum of 30cm. up to 80cm. With this machine Kverneland Accord are introducing a completely new frame concept which combines the proven reliability of the Optima sowing unit with an even stronger and more versatile frame.
The new Optima headstock is manufactured from round tubing, which gives the Optima a cleaner look as well as stability beyond today’s standard. The fertiliser hopper is mounted directly on top of the headstock. This new 1100ltr hopper will also be available in larger sizes and is specially designed to put the centre of gravity even more to the front to reduce lifting requirements. Another new feature, first introduced on this machine is the new vacuum air system. The manifold system gives the machine a clean-
er look but more importantly improves the airflow to increase the seed spacing accuracy. The rows are mounted on moveable brackets fixed to a 180x180mm square tube mainframe. Through telescoping, the machine can be switched from three meters transport-position to four meters working- position with the push of one button. MACHINERY Oilseeds Planting Gets Precision Plains is introducing a G reat new seed singulation and
spacing system that will enable the Yield-Pro planters to place oilseed rape with the same accuracy they already achieve with crops like maize, sugar beet, sunflower, soya beans and milo/alfalfa. The oilseeds disc system includes improvements to both the brushes in the Great Plains AirPro ® Metering system and the patented Clear-Shot ® Seed Tube. The new elements will be introduced across the entire range of planters from November 2013, and can be retro-fitted to existing models. Yield-Pro planters can be set up to work like conventional planters and seed single rows, or use Great Plains’ patented Twin-Row system, in which they establish two rows either side of where a conventional row would be, this technique being proven to raise maize yields by over 10%. The new oilseed rape disc is
275mm in diameter and includes 250 seed pockets around its outside edge. Each seed is held in the pocket by air pressure, which is released shortly before it reaches the top of the seed tube, so it falls under gravity, achieving the ‘dead drop’ that Great Plains says is crucial to achieving even spacing in the row. Great Plains has increased the amount of a specially formulated anti-static material used in the Air-Pro ® Metre brushes to prevent “static cling” that can damage metering accuracy, while also using a more transparent material in the seed tube to improve the performance of the monitoring sensors. “Any seed being used at low rates is prone to ‘static cling’, and these changes will improve performance and accuracy”, says Mike McClure, Great Plains’ Engineering Manager. Great Plains’ Simba DTX cultivator proved the star of the show at Power in Action, its debut at a

major public demonstration. The new entry DTX offers potential purchasers a wide range of options, says David Holmes, UK Sales Director, and this is helping attract plenty of enquiries about the machine: “Many of the farmers who saw the new style DTX working at the event were impressed with its performance and we secured three sales to stand visitors in the days after the event. “Even though it is much simplified from the original DTX, users still have a choice of two different style of restructuring legs, three different styles of wing, limited or adjustable disc angling and six different rear rollers. “This means they can tailor their machine to their precise needs, and achieve further flexibility by switching different combination of working parts. “That flexibility – and the range of different styles of work it enables the machine to do – is a major selling point”.

EQUIPMENT Stihl’s New 2.9kW-Petrol Chain Saw With M-Tronic
V
ery light, handy and powerful professional chain saw. The electronic self-tuning engine management system means that the fuel supply is electronically controlled and the machine automatically adapts to operating and ambient conditions, ensuring optimal engine performance every time. The memory function remembers previous operating conditions and allows you to restart quickly after an extended break. With easy-clean HD2 filter, controlled-delivery oil pump and practical features such as a stainless steel muffler, captive nuts on the sprocket cover and monocoque cover with three quick release fasteners. The 2-MIX technology in the innovative STIHL MS 261 C-M ensures up to 20% less fuel consumption and up to 50% emissions reduction compared to the same power STIHL two-stroke engines without 2-MIX technology. STIHL M-Tronic (M) This fully electronic engine management system adjusts ignition timing and fuel metering in all operating modes. It also takes external conditions such as temperature, altitude and fuel quality into account. It ensures consistent engine performance, a constant maximum speed and superb acceleration. M-Tronic makes manual carburettor adjustments unnecessary. Thanks to electronic cold/warm start recognition, now there is only one start position on the combi-lever. The engine starts after fewer pulls and with no change of position, and can immediately accelerate up to speed - even after a cold start. M-Tronic also remembers the settings from the last time the tool was used. So when external conditions are the same, optimal engine performance is available every time you start up again. HD2 filter The HD2 filter is made from polyethylene filter material with up to 70% finer pores than fleece and polyamide filters to trap even very fine dust. In addition, it is oil and water-repellent and thus very easy
to clean. The PET-covered filter cartridge with quick-release lock enables the filter to be assembled and disassembled in next to no time, without using tools. Reduced-emission engine technology 2-stroke engine with stratified charge. A fuel-free layer of air is created between the burned charge in the combustion chamber and the fresh charge in the crankcase, reducing the amount of fuel lost during the charge cycle. This results in more power with a lower weight, up to 20% lower fuel consumption than regular 2-stroke engines and significantly reduced exhaust emissions. Advanced combustion technology Four overflow channels swirl the fuel-air mix before ignition, allowing for optimum combustion and highly efficient performance. The result is lower fuel consumption and high torque across a broad rpm range. Pre-separation air filtration system STIHL long-life air filtration systems with pre-separation achieve perceptibly longer filter life compared with conventional filter systems. Air drawn in is swirled. The larger, heavier particles are ejected. The pre-cleaned air is routed to the air filter via the pre-separator duct. Anti-vibration system Intense vibration at the handles of power tools can lead to long-term effects on blood vessels in the hands and arms. STIHL has therefore developed an effective anti-vibration system whereby the oscillations from the machine’s engine are dampened which significantly reduces vibrations at the handles. Carburettor heating (V)Zoom Carburettor heating (V) By changing the chain saw from summer to winter operation, the intake air is pre-heated over the engine fins. This ensures that the carburettor does not ice up and you can continue working in freezing temperatures. STIHL ElastoStartZoom STIHL ElastoStart STIHL ElastoStart reduces the shock
caused by the compression of the engine during starting. The compression shock is taken away from the user’s joints and muscles through a spring or rubber element in the starter handle. Tool free filler capsZoom Tool free filler caps Special catches on the fuel and oil tanks for easy opening and locking without the need for tools. Decompression valveZoom Decompression valve The decompression valve is part of the easy starting system. The valve should be pressed before starting to reduce the compression pressure when starting, as well as reducing the effort needed to pull the starter rope. The decompression valve is semi-automatic; it must be pressed manually before starting, but then closes automatically. CompensatorZoom Compensator This controller in the carburettor prevents the fuel-air mixture getting richer as the air filter becomes clogged. The correct quantity of fuel is delivered to the carburettor depending on the quantity of air passing through the air filter. This keeps the fuel/air ratio in the combustion mixture constant and hence also the engine power. The filter doesn’t need to be cleaned until an appreciable drop in power occurs. Ematic chain lubrication systemZoom Ematic chain lubrication system The Ematic chain lubrication system ensures pinpoint lubrication of the saw chain links and guide bar rails. When used with STIHL OILOMATIC saw chain, it will provide maximum lubrication, longer wear and less oil consumption than conventional methods of chain lubrication. The Ematic system can reduce bar oil consumption by up to 50%. Side chain tensionerZoom Side chain tensioner The tensioning screw can be found on the side of the chain saw through the sprocket cover. This removes the need for contact with the sharp saw chain.

EQUIPMENT
Broom With A View Wind, rain, falling leaves and who knows when the snow might fall? There’s debris, mud, slush and all the harsh realities of autumn and winter tidying to contend with in municipal and amenity areas, paths, drives and estate maintenance. Whether you’re a semi-professional or professional contractor looking for a suitable way to clear up there is an extensive line-up of BroomEx pedestrian sweepers to do the job. The semi-professional machines are ideal for private estates, equestrian centres, agriculture and the construction industries. Higher specification models are for the realm of councils and contractors. If you take the view that you want one machine to do all, look to the PS, PT and PH model designations and you have power brooms that will take on all the winter clear-up tasks with, in
addition to a variety of brushes, a range of attachments including a leaf pusher, snow blade and snow chains. So once the autumn leaves have been cleared you’re ready to deal with snowfalls using the same machine. No shovelling or scraping while you walk behind the BroomEx on a clean, swept path, with the rotating brush effortlessly sweeping the snow to either side, ready for the application of salt de-icer. Make no mistake, these are heavy-duty machines designed to take the punishment of professional life. The top end models are designed for use in the harshest of conditions. These are built-for-life hydraulic sweeping machines available in 100cm and 120 cm working widths, ideal for professionals who need a broom that will take the punishment while rewarding the user with

speed, ease of use and hydrostatic transmission for maximum versatility. The PH range features the fastest of the BroomEx pedestrian sweepers. With Honda power they cover up to 4,900 and 5,800 square metres per hour respectively, with a driving speed of 3mph (4.9 km/ hr) and the drive includes reverse. The variable brush speed is operated from the working position and the handlebars are seven stage height adjustable with multi-function hand levers for maximum control. Brush pressure is also adjustable. All BroomEx models are finished in high quality three layer lacquered paintwork, similar to the finish used in the automotive industry, for surface protection from corrosion.
