Special edition Puma CVX marks Case IH’s 175th birthday ............................................................... Case IH has created a 175th anniversary version of the Puma 175 CVX tractor, which will be available in a limited production run to mark 175 years since the founding of the company that became today’s Case IH Agriculture. The jubilee edition also marks ten years’ production of the Puma line, the St. Valentin, Austrian-built seven-model range which spans from 150 to 240hp. Jerome Increase Case founded his eponymous farm equipment business in 1842, in the US town of Racine, Wisconsin, where the

worldwide headquarters of the Case IH agricultural business remain today. In 1869, Case manufactured the first steamengined tractor designed to power stationary implements, and seven years later built the first self-propelled traction steam engine. As steam power began to supersede horses for operating threshing machines, the JI Case Threshing Machine Company became the world’s largest producer of steam engines by 1886. In 1902, five US farm equipment firms merged to form the

International Harvester Company. Case IH was created in 1985 when J I Case acquired the agricultural division of International Harvester. The Puma 175 CVX Jubilee Edition is finished in a distinctive ‘Viper Stryker’ pearlescent red inherited from the Case IH Autonomous Concept Vehicle (ACV). It also carries unique 175th anniversary decals, only 175 are to be built. Defra produces detailed analysis of avian influenza outbreaks ............................................................... Defra has published an epidemiology report into the avian influenza outbreaks between December 2016 and March 2017. The full findings can be read here.

The NFU’s chief poultry adviser, Gary Ford, said: “This very detailed and thorough report reinforces the need for the poultry sector to be operating to very high standards of biosecurity all of the time. “The risk has not gone away. In fact it is likely to increase as we head into August and

September and the start of the autumn migratory season. The prompt actions of Defra and the APHA, and the prompt reporting of suspicion of AI by poultry keepers, have meant that the disease has not spread beyond the initial infected premises.

“Defra and the APHA deserve credit for this and for lifting movement restrictions at the earliest opportunity." Key findings... All the outbreaks, apart from those at the game bird premises in Lancashire, are considered to have arisen as independent events, resulting from direct or indirect primary incursions from wild birds. The infected premises (IPs) in Lancashire are considered to have originated as the result of a direct or

indirect primary incursion of HPAI H5N8 from wild birds, with subsequent spread between related premises, taking place as a result of business activities. Extensive epidemiological investigations did not detect the presence of infection in any further premises investigated in connection with the IPs, either by known contacts (source and spread tracings), or as a result of proximity (protection and surveillance zones). Although the epidemiological investigation concludes that the most likely route of introduction of virus onto the majority of the IPs was direct or indirect contact with wild birds, an incursion such as these, onto an individual premises, remains a low likelihood event and is largely influenced by the effectiveness of biosecurity measures that have been implemented. This is an unprecedented level of highly pathogenic avian influenza, even more so than the epizootic of H5N1 HPAI in 2005-6.

Target Blackgrass early for best results in OSR

............................................................... Growers of autumn-sown oilseed rape can improve control of Blackgrass with an early season application of carbetamide. That is the advice from David Roberts, Herbicide Technical Specialist for Adama who recommends hitting Blackgrass seedlings when they are small and therefore more susceptible. “The timeline for establishing oilseed rape often limits the use of cultural techniques to combat Blackgrass, so it is essential to make the correct chemistry choices and to apply those chemicals at the optimal time,” David Roberts explains. This season’s advice is to treat crops early and to stack actives using the best, most effective products for the

job. “A sequenced approach of an early (pre-emergence to 4 true leaves) application of Crawler (600 g/kg carbetamide), followed by propyzamide in November if/when a second flush of grassweeds has emerged will give oilseed rape growers the best chance of keeping ahead of Blackgrass populations,” David continues. “Where blackgrass pressure is extremely high, an effective foliar graminicide should also be considered between the Crawler and propyzamide treatments.” Crawler kickstarts Blackgrass control by targeting the roots of young, shallow-rooted plants and weakening their resolve to subsequent chemistries: using carbetamide early has been proven to optimise the efficacy of herbicide programmes with

propaquizafop and propyzamide. It is also effective against Chickweed and Speedwell, with ryegrasses, meadow grasses and wild oats also showing susceptibility. “Applying Crawler early in the season as part of an integrated resistance management strategy can cost-effectively deliver more than 96% control of Blackgrass,” David adds. “It also has the added advantage of reducing the risk of chemical losses to water courses due to heavy rainfall. Whenever possible, applications should be made when field drains aren’t running: for extra security and peace of mind, Adama’s free WaterAware app provides an easy to decipher guide, on a location by location basis, of when it is and isn’t advisable to spray.”

(NASDAQ: ACAT) today announced that it has signed a definitive merger agreement under which Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT) will acquire Arctic Cat in a cash transaction valued at approximately $247 million, plus the assumption of existing debt. Under the terms of the agreement, which was unanimously approved by the Arctic Cat board of directors, Textron, through a wholly owned subsidiary, will commence a tender offer to purchase all outstanding shares of Arctic Cat at $18.50 per share in cash, representing a 40.7 percent premium to the closing price of Arctic Cat's common stock on January 20, 2017. Arctic Cat anticipates that tender offer materials will be provided to shareholders no later than February 7, 2017.
