New intensive finishing feed for end of season lambs

UK sheep producers now have access to a highly cost-effective end of season lamb finishing feed

U

K sheep producers now have access to a highly cost-effective end of season lamb finishing feed, thanks to the launch of a new alkalised concentrate from FiveF Alka Limited. Trials suggest new Alkalamb boosts lamb daily liveweight gain and feed conversion efficiency when fed at the same rate as a traditional finishing concentrate. Margin over feed was better as a result. “Feeding end of season lambs becomes costlier the older lambs get. These animals 4 | Agri News

typically take longer to finish because feed conversion ratio (FCR) is increasing at this stage of their growth. Consequently, increasing traditional concentrate intake can be expensive and is often risky because the practice can adversely affect the health of the rumen,” explains Rob Smith from FiveF Alka. Alkalamb is a lamb finishing concentrate based on alkalised wheat with a pH of 8.5. The alkaline nature of the nut means that late season lambs can be fed it ad lib to accelerate finishing time but with a reduced risk of rumen

acidosis. “The practical trials we have conducted suggest the new feed will facilitate a smoother transition from grazing to an intensive late season finishing system. Promoting a healthier rumen through alkalisation will also boost overall lamb vitality,” Mr Smith says. Alkalamb nuts are available this autumn from a number of approved FiveF Alka feed manufacturers. Call the FiveF Alkaline on 01200 613118 for further information.01200 613118

enters Farming 4.0, the fourth phase of a progression that began with the development of mechanisation, before continuing through the green revolution and into the precision farming era, that long experience is serving us and our customers well.”

By 2050, it’s anticipated the world’s population will reach nine billion. Meanwhile, the area of global land on which food can be produced continues to shrink, as development, environmental problems and other issues make farming impossible or difficult. Agriculture therefore needs to produce more food from less land. And that underlines the need to make every input which goes into growing and producing food more productive – not just the seeds planted and livestock raised, but the equipment and technology used to look after them.

New digital products and concepts from Case IH will build on progress in precision developments and bring digital farming fully into play to raise profitability. It’s set to do that by optimising not just machine performance, but the performance of whole farm systems. THE MOVE INTO DIGITAL FARMING

The ability to gather operating and field data when machines are at work, and then analyse it to aid future decision-making, was and remains the hallmark of precision agriculture. But it’s “When we introduced our first how this data is used, and the precision farming technology joined-up, connected method developments two decades in which it’s done, that makes ago, Case IH led the way in the move from this into this sector,” notes Thierry digital agriculture so different Panadero, Vice President – and so exciting. efficient and precise, plus the economic and environmental benefits of more targeted and timely input use, and it’s clear digital farming technologies offer great promise. Through our Advanced Farming System (AFS) and its associated suite of precision farming technologies, such as AccuGuide auto-steering and AccuTurn automated headland turning, Case IH already has available today many of the tools to bring digital farming to life. And from vehicle guidance to remote monitoring telemetry to ISOBUS tractor/implement control, the groundwork for tomorrow’s digital technologies has already been laid. “With our Autonomous Concept Vehicle (ACV) development, we have shown, when they are combined, what these technologies can do to aid the digital revolution,” points out Mr Panadero. FULFILLING THE PROMISE Not only can digital technology help boost productivity itself, but it can also help manage variables which are much less easy to influence, such as labour and weather. New General Manager appointed to farm tractor distributor AgriArgo UK

Adrian Winnett has been appointed General Manager at AgriArgo UK Ltd

G

enaral Manager AgriArgo-UK-&-Ireland Adrian Winnett An experienced manager in the agricultural machinery industry, Adrian Winnett, has been appointed General Manager at AgriArgo UK Ltd, the distributor of Landini, McCormick and Valpadana tractors in the United Kingdom and Ireland. He succeeds Ray Spinks, who has stepped down from the role after 40 years working in the farm equipment industry. Adrian Winnett is no stranger to the Argo Tractors product line, having worked as Landini sales manager for seven years before joining the UK arm of implement manufacturer Amazone, where he was appointed general manager in 2009 and then managing director in 2014. He started his career in the family’s Northamptonshirebased farm machinery dealership, which held the Landini tractor franchise, before joining the Landini sales operation in Britain. Simeone Morra, Corporate Business Director, Argo Tractors, said: “Adrian brings invaluable experience of managing a successful agricultural equipment distribution company, which 8 | Agri News

combined with his knowledge of our business and the Landini product range, will be a great asset. We welcome him back to the Argo Tractors family.” Adrian Winnett, who is married with two children, said of his appointment: “I’m very pleased to have this opportunity to work with Argo Tractors again and a product line that has been transformed while I’ve been working elsewhere. We face turbulent times in the agricultural machinery industry, with cost, staffing and competition pressures, and also with restructuring in the dealer sector as some manufacturers go ‘full line’ in the hope of securing more business from their dealerships. Argo is taking a different path, continuing to specialise in what it does best, producing well-engineered and performance tractors for all sectors, and promoting and supporting independent dealerships free to decide on the products they sell. I’m looking forward to steering the AgriArgo business and encouraging more farmers and contractors to consider a

Landini or McCormick for their next tractor.” Commenting on Ray Spinks’ decision to step down, Mr Morra said: “Ray has experienced many roles with us in manufacturing, sales and management, and he was pivotal in the re-introduction of the McCormick brand back in 2001. For the past 10 years, he has dedicated his knowledge and experience to the running of AgriArgo UK Ltd and he now deserves some well-earned downtime. On behalf of the Morra family and Argo Tractors, we thank Ray for his contribution and dedication over the years and wish him well for the future.” AgriArgo UK Ltd, based at Harworth in South Yorkshire, is the distributor of Argo’s Landini, McCormick and Valpadana farm, horticultural and specialist tractors in the United Kingdom and Ireland, supplying the machines to farmers, contractors and other rural enterprises through a network of independent dealers, who also provide servicing, repairs and parts support.

Cover crop inoculant launched to improve soil health

A new biological soil inoculant developed to boost cover crops and, more significantly, pass on a soil health legacy to following cash crops

A

new biological soil inoculant developed to boost cover crops and, more significantly, pass on a soil health legacy to following cash crops has been launched by biofertiliser specialists PlantWorks. An extension to the Kentbased company's Smart Rotations product range, the SR2 formulation works by establishing a beneficial microbiological population in the soil that enhances crop performance. Specifically, the inoculation boosts the crop's ability to take up essential nutrients, improves drought tolerance and water use efficiency, and imparts other benefits such as increased resistance to pests and diseases. Developed by PlantWorks' own team of microbiologists in conjunction with academic partners, SR2 comprises five species of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and a specific consortium of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). Trials with cover crops including species such as vetch, crimson clover, black oats, buckwheat and yellow trefoil have demonstrated significant improvements in foliar fresh weight following application of the SR2 formulation (Fig. 1 trials summary). "We have demonstrated through our research programme the very positive effects of using mycorrhizal fungi with cover crops," says Jamie Stotzka, head of the farming team at PlantWorks. "Specifically,

10 | Agri News

we have recorded better establishment, stronger rooting and increased biomass in these crops. "However, the really important potential for this new technology is the improvement of soil biology for the benefit of the following crop. This is particularly important in rotations that include crops that do not support mycorrhizal fungi, such as oilseed rape and sugar beet, where the inoculated cover crop can be used to restore depleted soils. "Our research has shown how the addition of mycorrhizal fungi to the soil effectively increases the uptake surface area of plant roots, by up to 700 times, making them healthier and more efficient at collecting water and nutrients. Cover crops, and particularly mixtures including legumes, are excellent hosts for mycorrhizal fungi, and therefore provide a very good opportunity

to improve the soil biology, to the benefit of following crops. With what is effectively an extended root area, crops gain further advantage from other beneficial soil organisms that can directly improve yield and plant health, and hence the mycorrhizal fungi work so effectively in combination with the plant growth promoting rhizobacteria." Supplied as a dry granule, SR2 should be applied directly at the time of cover crop drilling (as precisely as possible into the seed zone, using a granular applicator, drilled or broadcast), or farmers can request that their seed supplier includes the inoculum with their seed mixture. The recommended retail price of a 10 litre pack to treat one hectare is ÂŁ39.00 + VAT. Details of where to obtain SR2 are available at: http://smart. plantworksuk.co.uk/distributors/

Five-point plan offers guidance for delaying autumn wheat drilling

Think before rushing in to drill winter what after the early harvest and now we’ve had rainfull, farmers are being urged.

T

hink before rushing in to drill winter wheat after the early harvest and now we've had rainfall, farmers are being urged. With large areas of land harvested much earlier than normal, and soil moisture levels improved, growers will be itching to drill empty fields, says Nick Myers, head of crop production for agronomy firm, ProCam. But on farms suffering from blackgrass, there's a compelling argument for holding back, he stresses. "Low blackgrass seed dormancy after the hot, dry summer might increase the temptation to bring drilling dates forward - because a bigger proportion of this year's shed blackgrass seed is predicted to germinate earlier. But resist that temptation," Mr Myers urges. "The later you can safely delay drilling, the less blackgrass you'll have emerging in the crop, and the less blackgrass seed will potentially be shed back to the soil next summer. "Instead of viewing this as an opportunity to drill earlier, think of it as an opportunity to make worthwhile inroads into reducing blackgrass populations for the long-term." On farms where delayed drilling has already been practiced for a few years, and blackgrass levels have already started to decline, Mr Myers acknowledges it

might be particularly tempting to edge drilling earlier again this year. But, he says, this could undo some of that good work. "Some blackgrass will inevitably germinate later anyway," he adds. "Obviously, you have to assess how late you can drill based on your farm situation. If you can't delay all fields, at least delay those with the highest weed burdens." To help growers navigate through delayed autumn wheat drilling in blackgrass fields, Mr Myers suggests a five-point plant: 1. Leave stubbles undisturbed as long as possible. That way you'll allow longer for blackgrass seed on the surface to germinate, but also longer for it to be eaten by predators. Only disturb the soil at the point of having to prepare the seedbed. 2. Avoid using inversion tillage (ploughing) if possible. The longer you can leave buried blackgrass seed underground, the more of it will rot away. 3. Prepare high quality seedbeds. These will stimulate the maximum amount of blackgrass to germinate before planting the crop. That way, even more blackgrass can be killed off in a stale seedbed. Good seedbeds will also

produce better performance from soil-acting herbicides, he notes. 4. Depending on farm situation, consider delaying drilling until well into October. Octoberdrilled wheat generally contains much less blackgrass than September-drilled. Also, information from ProCam's 4Cast crop database showed winter wheat yield hadn't declined despite average drilling date being delayed from 2 October to 12 October between the harvest seasons of 2011 and 2017. Most likely this was because any yield penalty from later drilling was offset by crops containing less blackgrass. 5. Adapt agronomy according to later drilling. Select wheat varieties that can compensate for later drilling through greater tillering, and that are flexible with regard to drilling date. The variety might be 1 or 2% lower yielding on paper, but you could end up with a better crop. Also, take steps to maximise establishment, for example by using a seed treatment shown to produce rapid establishment. "As well as helping against blackgrass, delaying drilling can also help against ryegrass, and help to reduce take-all, eyespot and lodging pressures in winter wheat," says Mr Myers. "It can also help reduce the risk of BYDV because there are likely to be fewer aphids about.

National Sprayer Testing Service Ian foreman - NSTS Manager

The NSTS have over 240 test centres around the whole of the UK able to offer at least one of the test types required to meet legislation

T

he NSTS have over 240 test centres around the whole of the UK able to offer at least one of the test types required to meet current legislation for pesticide application equipment (PAE) testing. Around 10% of these also provide fertiliser spreader testing where we have seen a steady increase in the number of tests carried out. Fertiliser input costs are on a par with pesticides and with the benefits of having a sprayer tested each year, these benefits can also be realised with spreader testing. The effects of uneven application of fertiliser are not always visible but yield variations will be at time of harvest and that loss in yield directly relates to lost input costs where the crop cannot achieve its full Bromyard Road, Ledbury, HR8 1LG t: 01531 632171 www.agrimec-ledbury.co.uk

potential. From the NSTS test, following an inspection of the machine and tray test to calculate coefficient of variation (CV) you can be confident that the spreader will give the best results possible from the products tested. Back to PAE testing; there are four different tests available to cover all different types – liquid, slug pellets, micro granules and fogging machines. Liquid covers a wide range from sprayers, weed wipers and seed treatment, through to potato application equipment, boat sprayers and train sprayers. The list is very extensive and wide ranging. Red Tractor do have different timescales for test and retest and this can also be dependent on which scheme you are in so its always worth check-

ing the protocols for confirmation. Take a look at the NSTS website www.nsts.org. uk where you can find much of this information, along with details of where to find a test centre in your area. Anyone applying professional pesticides must have their equipment tested. This includes horticulture and fruit but also sprayers working in the amenity sector. Ranging from pavements and highways, rail lines and stations, school and sports grounds and golf courses, amenity has an important role to play and it is vital in the public spaces they operate that equipment is in the best condition to apply pesticides safely and accurately.

Aviagen’s Ross 400 club introduces new award for growers Aviagen has announced a new Ross 400 Cub Gold Award, recognising growers who acheive

viagen has announced a new Ross 400 Club Gold Award, recognising growers who either achieve three consecutive flocks with a European Production Efficiency Factor (EPEF) score of 400 or more, or attain an EPEF score of 10% more than the current target, i.e. 440 or more at the present.

of Ross growers throughout the UK who achieve a EPEF of 400 or more. From just three members in 2009, membership has now grown to well over 300, representing the top 1 percent of the UK broiler industry.

“Each year, more and more new members join, having achieved 400-plus EPEFs, and scores are constantly growing, EPEF is a performance with some outstandingly high benchmark that takes into achievements. That’s why account feed conversion, mortality and daily weight gain. we thought it was time we created awards for growers who demonstrate consistent Aviagen UK Limited formed performance and the extrathe Ross UK 400 Club in 2009 special effort required to to celebrate the achievements

achieve exceptional EPEF scores,” said Aviagen Head of Sales & Technical, Stuart Thomson. “For Gold Award achievers in any given calendar year, they’ll be invited to a special event at Aviagen’s UK headquarters in Scotland, where they will be able to meet the Aviagen team, learn about new industry developments and the latest broiler information – plus they’ll be able to network with fellow Gold Award winners and exchange useful tips,” says Stuart Thomson.

Aldi announces record sales and plans for 130 new stores A first-of-its-kind air scrubber and climate control system has been installed at H Timmis, a poultry farm in Shropshire.

A

ldi has announced record results for its last financial year, with sales continuing to increase in 2018 as growing numbers of British shop pers switch from the Big Four. Sales in the UK and Ireland rose 16.4% to £10.2bn in the year to 31st December 2017 (2016: £8.8bn) – a higher growth rate than the previous year (13.5%) and over five times faster than the overall grocery market (3%). The supermarket – now Britain’s 5th biggest with over 775 stores – gained more market share than any other last year, attracting a further 1.1m shoppers through its doors with its unique combination of lowest prices and award-winning quality, according to Kantar Worldpanel data. It now com-

mands 7.6% of all UK grocery spend. Giles Hurley, Aldi’s chief executive in the UK and Ireland, said: “The revolution in British grocery shows no sign of slowing. Savvy customers know they can swap and save with Aldi, thanks to great quality products at lower prices. This is happening on a massive scale, with more than 1.1m new customers shopping with us throughout 2017.

award-winning products at the lowest prices. Millions of Britons can put fantastic-tasting food on their table every day of the week, at prices they can afford.” Last year Aldi announced a £1bn capex investment during 2017 and 2018 to open new stores in every part of the UK, hundreds of store upgrades and extended distribution centres. It remains firmly on course to hit this target.

“While other grocers introduced more complexity into their businesses in their struggle to win back customers, we stuck to our guns and focused on doing what Aldi does best – buying smart, staying lean, improving quality and keeping prices low. Our biggest strength is our simplicity – a carefully selected range of exclusive own-label brands and

Looking further ahead, Aldi said it would open a further 130 new stores between 2019 and 2020, while continuing to invest in its Project Fresh initiative – a £300m investment to create more in store space for fresh, chilled and food-togo ranges as well as simpler layouts, improved fixtures and brighter, wider aisles. Two Sisters hires new talent to its leadership team

Food manufacturing giant 2 Sisters Food Group has made a raft of new appointments to its leadership team

C

hief executive Ronald Kers has conducted a ‘root and branch’ review of his senior teams, identifying roles and individuals that will best move the organisation forward. The new appointments include: Strengthening the focus on people and compliance, Lee Greenbury joins in the newlycreated role of Group People and Compliance Director. Lee joins from Muller where he held the position of Director of Legal for the past six years. Following Meal Solutions MD Simon Wookey’s departure in November, current UK Poultry Managing Director Keith Packer has agreed to fill his role on a permanent basis. Interim Meal Solutions Managing Director William Duncanson will help with Keith’s transition. With Keith’s transition across divisions, Andrew McInnes joins as Managing Director of the UK Poultry business. Andrew joins from Muller where he was Managing Director of Milk & Ingredients, previously having a 11-year track record at Muller as CFO and in various commercial finance roles. Heading the new transformation team as Transformation Director 24 | Agri News

will be Seb Jones. Seb joins after a 23-year career at Muller, most recently as Global Group Integration Director. He brings significant experience in change, programme management and strategy roles as well as UK operational leadership experience in both branded and private label FMCG industries. Marvilano Mochtar joins in the newly-created role of Strategy Manager. Reporting directly to Kers, Marvilano will help him and the wider business with strategy formulation and implementation. Marvilano joins from the Boston Consulting Group. Kers said: “Transforming 2 Sisters requires top team effort. By bringing in the right people in the right roles, we are building the foundations of a disciplined, high performance organisation”. “If we are to truly become the leading international food business, trusted and respected by all stakeholders, then we need to have the strongest possible leadership team. We continuously need to set the bar higher and deliver for our customers, consumers and ourselves, and I know this new team will do that.” Kers acknowledged the pace

of change after being in post since June, and also that three of the new hires came from his previous business, Muller, where he was global CEO. Kers added: “I want us to turnaround our business performance as soon as possible, and although we are making some progress already, I want to accelerate the pace. I know that having a strong, senior leadership team in place that I know and who have a track record of delivery is essential. I have worked very closely with Andrew, Lee and Seb over the years and I am confident they can hit the ground running and add great value to 2 Sisters.” “I would like to thank William Duncanson for holding the reigns in the interim and credit Keith Packer for helping to start the turnaround of the UK Poultry division during his short time in post. I know with his experience at 2 Sisters he is extremely well-placed to build on Simon’s good work. Andrew is an accomplished food industry leader and I know he will bring further professionalism and delivery to our poultry operations, while Marvilano and Seb will bring much-needed strategic insight and process excellence to all of our businesses.

Effective Poultry House Cleaning Steve Birchall Poultry House Cleaning Services High pressure powerwashing, disinfectant and cleaners With the poultry industry experiencing more than its fair share of problems over the past 12 months or so no poultry producer can afford to hinder flock performance by allowing a build up of micro organisms. Even low disease levels drag profits back and skimping on the cleaning routine between flocks is false economy, says Lancashire based cleaning specialist Steve Birchall. “There is no opportunity these days to rest buildings between flocks. Turnaround times are tight and it is, therefore, vital that buildings are not only throughly cleaned but disinfected as well, and if there has been a problem

the cleaning and disinfection treatment should take account of it” says Steve, who has been operating a nationwide poultry contract shed cleaning business for over 30 years. His three teams are equipped to carry out whatever cleaning regime producers require and he suggests a good standard routine for anyone who wants the best safeguard. After the litter has been removed, the building and any equipment either retained inside or taken out should be power washed at about 2,500 psi with a combined cleaner/ sanitizer/deodorizer, which should remove some of the 80% of micro organisms at this stage.

“Older buildings are often more difficult to clean than modern ones”, Steve says, “However, if you are going to do the job at all, then it is worth doing properly and you have to take sufficient time, particularly in breeder or laying units where nest boxes and equipment have been in place for 12 months or more. Broiler units with a six or seven day turnaround are less difficult. However, people who prefer to do what is a rather unpleasant job themselves often get rather jaded before it has been done properly. If there are other enterprises on the farm, they have to keep breaking off to do other work.

2019 Kawasaki Mule Pro-MX line up of new models

The 2019 Kawasaki Mule Pro-MX is built around a smaller chassis than the rest of the Mule Pro family

T

he 2019 Kawasaki Mule Pro-MX is built around a smaller chassis than the rest of the Mule Pro family, which should translate into better performance in tighter spaces. Kawasaki’s 2019 off-road lineup has been unveiled, which features a series of carryover models along with a single new one – the 2019 Kawasaki Mule Pro-MX. Kawasaki has had a lot of success with the Mule

Pro family since it was introduced a few years ago and all have shared the same full-size chassis. What sets the Kawasaki Mule Pro-MX apart is its size. Built for two people, the Pro-MX is almost a full foot shorter and four inches narrower than the Mule Pro-FXR. Full measurements include a length of 110 inches, width of 60 inches and height of 74.4 inches. Despite the shorter length, the wheelbase is not even an inch shorter than the Mule

Pro-FXR at 78.9 inches so they share a similar turning radius of approximately 14 feet. Another bit change on the Kawasaki Mule Pro-MX is the engine. While the rest of the gas-powered Mule Pro models feature an 812cc three-cylinder engine, the Pro-MX relies on a 695cc single-cylinder engine.

The utility of choice for many professionals such as farmers, gamekeepers and all grounds-care experts, the two machines at the top of the Kawasaki MULE series will carry the new name PRO for 2016.
