Look behind the can to maximise wild oat control
Growers should adopt an integrated approach to wild oat control, with chemical/cultural control method used in tandem to reduce unwanted seeds That is the advice from David Roberts, Herbicide Technical Specialist for Adama, who explains that modern weed control protocols should look beyond the herbicide can for maximum efficacy. “Wild oats are one of the most competitive weeds affecting modern arable rotations with just one plant per square metre able to reduce winter cereal yields by as much as 1.0t/ha, and spring yields by as much as 0.6 t/ha,” David Roberts claims. “Growers therefore need to use all available tools to control weeds this spring, but in doing so shouldn’t rely solely on chemical herbicides. After all, an over-reliance on any single mode of action could see their efficacy fall away, as has been seen with fungicide resistance in recent years.” David therefore urges growers and agronomists to integrate the use of herbicides with non-chemical, cultural control methods. “Controlling wild oats is complicated by their protracted emergence window,” he explains. “While they can germinate in the autumn, the majority of seedlings will appear in the spring. This wide germination window, plus the ability of large wild oat seeds to propagate from depths of up to 15cm, means some cultural control methods such as delayed drilling, spring cropping and ploughing can be less effective against wild oats than they are against blackgrass.
6 | AgriNews
“That said, growers shouldn’t be discouraged from using cultural control methods. If anything, I’d positively encourage growers to implement changes to their cropping strategy, rotation, and cultivation practices in order to safeguard the longevity and efficacy of current herbicides.” However, David warns that whilst cultural practices such as spring cropping can reduce populations of winter wild oats, it may encourage springgerminating common wild oats. “Any changes to existing farming practices must therefore be carefully planned in order to avoid replacing one pressure with another. For example, direct drilling is advisable when trying to combat the threat of spring germination as the reduction in soil disturbance can limit the number of seeds that germinate.” As with any weed control protocol, David emphasises that the first point of focus should be to prevent unwanted seed ingress. “This essentially means preventing the importation and spread of seeds by ensuring all rented or contractor machinery is fully decontaminated prior to use. Beyond that, where weed populations are relatively restricted, hand-rogueing or spraying off distinct patches of weeds before they start shedding seeds should be carried out.” David also advocates the use of weed mapping to identify and
monitor where infestations have occurred: “Having a definitive understanding of where weeds are growing and how they are spreading or regressing is the only truly accurate way of determining if current control protocols are having the desired effect. Being able to substantiate or refute existing measures will help to develop a more effective herbicide, cultivation and cropping strategy for the next cropping cycle.” Where weed infestations are more widespread and beyond the control of rogueing or selective spraying, David recommends the use of an appropriate post-emergence herbicide. “ACCase inhibitor herbicides such as Topik (240 g/l clodinafop-propargyl and 60 g/l cloqunitocet-mexyl) are effective at controlling wild oats in wheat, while pinoxaden can be used in crops of barley,” he affirms. “Pre-emergence herbicides more commonly used for the control of other grassweeds can also provide some control of wild oats, but their success will depend on the target weed’s emergence pattern. The inclusion of a non-cereal break crop such as oilseed rape also enables the use of alternative herbicides, including propaquizafop, quizalofop, cycloxydim, clethodim, carbetamide and propyzamide, further reducing reliance on any single mode of action.”
Shearing workshops offer essential technique and equipment advice
Cox and Ritchey has teamed up with Heiniger to host a series of shearing workshops and practical advice sessions throughout the UK
Cox and Ritchey, part of the Allflex UK Group Ltd, has teamed up with Heiniger to host a series of shearing workshops and practical advice sessions at seven locations throughout the UK in late April and early May: some of the events will also include live shearing demonstrations. The free-to-attend workshops have been designed to provide practical advice to young shearers, semi-professional and professional contract shearers and sheep farmers, with each event being delivered by Selwyn Williams, R&D Manager for Heiniger. Additional input will also be provided by Matt Smith at the Holsworthy, Lostwithiel and Tavistock events: Matt is the 2016 World Nine Hour Strongwool Ewe shearing champion and is Farmers Weekly Sheep Farmer
of the Year 2017. The workshops will focus on several key elements aimed at improving delegates’ shearing knowledge, including: selecting the right equipment and correct plant setup; clipper and blade maintenance; grinding and sharpening combs and cutters for optimum performance and lifespan. Matt Smith will also be discussing the importance of health, nutrition and fitness which can be overlooked but are essential to a successful career in shearing. Each event will also include a Q&A session with attendees able to seek specific advice pertinent to their own shearing requirements. “Choosing the right equipment and ensuring it is properly maintained is vital to the safe and efficient shearing of sheep,” explains Ian Chapman, Marketing Executive for
Allflex UK Group Ltd, the UK importer and distributor of Heiniger clipping and shearing equipment. “We’ve therefore teamed up with Heiniger and a selection of well-known companies and institutions to host a second series of our popular shearing workshops. The sole aim of these workshops is to help improve a shearers’ knowledge, thus making the shearing season more efficient, more productive, more profitable and safer for novice and experienced shearers and farmers.” RSVP Refreshments will be available at each workshop, but places are limited: to reserve your place please contact the relevant host.

Bale wrapping workshops offer forage preservation practice advice
Kuhn Farm Machinery is holding a series of bale wrapping workshops, demonstrations to and best practice clinics to help farmers KUHN Farm Machinery is holding a series of bale wrapping workshops, demonstrations and best practice clinics to help farmers improve the quality of, and get the most from, their baled forage. The workshops, which are being co-hosted by KUHN main dealers and KUHN’s film manufacturing partner, BPI Agriculture, are being held at six venues across the UK throughout April and May. “Preserving the maximum nutritional value of baled silage and haylage relies on a number of factors, not least of which are bale structure and consistency, forage quality, and ensuring each and every bale is protected within a 100% airtight wrapping,” explains Stuart Anthony of BPI Agriculture.
a layer of standard wrapping film to fulfil the same function. “Unlike other film binding systems which use wide mantle film for binding, the KUHN system uses two standard 750mm stretch film rolls to fully encapsulate the bale,” explains KUHN product specialist, Katie Calcutt. “As well as improving silage preservation and making the recycling of waste plastic easier, it also reduces plastic usage by up to 30% by prestretching the wrapping film by 70% prior to application. Film loading is also quicker and easier as each roll weighs just 27 kg, compared to the wider rolls which can weigh between 40-90 kg.”
gives complete control of the wrapping process by allowing the operator to select even and odd numbers of film to be applied. The FBP is also available with KUHN’s 3D wrapping system which wraps around the cylindrical surface of the bale first to exclude more air, thereby improving forage preservation and maintaining bale shape for longer.” “Ensuring the wrapping film is applied correctly is key to quality forage preservation,” Stuart adds. “As well as being UV, tear and puncture resistant and impermeable to oxygen, the film must also have the appropriate elasticity and cling characteristics to ensure each bale retains its integrity, no matter how long it is in storage.
“We have therefore teamed up with KUHN Farm Machinery to talk to farmers about the latest film wrapping products and bale wrapping techniques as well as some key tips and pitfalls to consider as the grass harvesting season approaches.”
The demonstration events will also give attendees the opportunity to learn more about two of KUHN’s most popular baler wrapper combination machines: the award-winning twin satellite FBP 3135 BalePack which won the DLV Machine of the Year 2018 award in the forage harvesting category at last year’s AgriTechnica exhibition, and the i-BIO+.
Each event will also include a detailed explanation of KUHN’s unique and patented film binding system which eliminates the need for an initial layer of netting to be placed around the cylindrical side of the bale, instead using
“Both machines are now available with KUHN’s film binding Southam Agricultural technology,” Fields Farm, Station Road Katie adds, Southam, Warwickshire “and use our CV47 2DH IntelliWrap t: 01926 813 426 www.southamagri.co.uk system which

“We’ll therefore be talking to delegates about the importance of making sure crops are cut at the correct growth stage, assessing dry matter prior to baling, handling and storing film rolls correctly to avoid damage, machinery maintenance and calibrating the wrapper to ensure optimum film coverage and pre-stretch.”
Landini tractors - New Rex 4 Series launched at LAMMA 2018
All-new Landini Rex 4 Series tractors were launched to farmers at the LAMMA 2018 show. The all-new Landini Rex 4 Series tractors will make their UK farming debut at the LAMMA show in January, representing a new range of compact but powerful and durable power units suited to applications where space is limited.
can be configured to no more than 1.3m wide so it has potential as a heavyduty yard and cubicle house scraping tractor, while the ultra-narrow version that can be set up barely 1m wide is designed primarily for vineyard work.
The 95hp Rex 4-100 F will be on display from a lineup spanning 69-111hp and available in different configurations to suit a number of applications. The ‘F’ version, for example,
There are seven power outputs altogether and the new transmissions available provide a three-speed powershift option for the first time, enabling operators to quickly change ground speed when towing or working soilengaging implements without losing momentum.

Fingertip power shuttle shifting between forward and reverse also makes life easier and more comfortable for the operator – as does the new front axle suspension as it cushions the front end of the tractor
when passing over humps and hollows. The tractors are available with an open platform or a new cab design with a virtually flat floor – which contrasts with the more common ‘legs astride’ seating position of tractors like this because of the transmission tunnel. Power comes from a new 2.9-litre compact fourcylinder engine providing similar outputs to the new models’ predecessors but there is additional torque at the lower end of the rev range to help lift performance. New Eco pto gearing and Eco 40kph transmission options help fuel consumption by lowering engine speeds in work and during transport, while larger fuel tanks reduce fill-up frequency, especially on the versions that get a 90-litre tank – almost 40% up on the previous design. Landini distributor AgriArgo UK & Ireland says the tractors are likely to end up working in horticulture and orchards, and on farms where the power intense compact size make them attractions in space-limited situations.

Good business for Lemken €360m of sales achieved, double digit growth
The global business environment for agricultural technology has recovered, giving Lemken an 11% increase compared to the previous year. LEMKEN, the German agricultural technology specialist, Group sales in 2017 totalling EUR360 million – an 11% increase compared to the previous year. Sales developed especially well in Eastern Europe. The current export share is 77%. Good business for LEMKEN Almost all countries experienced an upturn. Cereal and milk prices have largely recovered, creating an upbeat investment mood among farmers. Demand from Russia and Ukraine was particularly high. Sales figures also increased by double digits in the overseas markets of Canada and the USA. LEMKEN additionally achieved excellent sales results in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland. The company also further expanded its already solid business in the United Kingdom. As expected, demand was challenging on the French market, where investment was subdued as a result of disappointing harvests and prices. Sales developed positively across all product groups. Growth was particularly strong in the plough and compact disc harrow segments. However, sales of seed drills, cultivators and field sprayers were just as successful. LEMKEN employed a total of 1470 staff at the end of the

year. This new record shows clearly how staff numbers have increased continually from one year to the next. Managing Director Anthony van der Ley is satisfied with the results: “We are very happy that the economy has picked up again. Due to our employees’ outstanding commitment, we were able to produce considerably more machines than planned. We are also grateful to our partners among specialist dealers, who provided us with optimal support in sales and service.”
new machinery and tools. Further large projects aimed at optimising production processes and thus quality and reliability are planned for 2018. Efficiency will be boosted even further in view of growing sales, and the company will focus on modern manufacturing technology and improved cross-departmental cooperation in this context. An additional 60 new positions will also be created at the Alpen manufacturing site, given the extensive utilisation of its capacities.
Highly skilled employees are essential for manufacturers of sophisticated implement technology. The company, an agricultural technology specialist, has also created additional positions and structures to make the renowned LEMKEN service even better and provide even more intensive support to farmers and specialist dealers.
The outlook for 2018 is positive, as the excellent level of incoming orders at the beginning of the year indicates that this will be another year of positive growth. There continues to be enormous demand for modern agricultural technology in Eastern Europe, above all Russia. LEMKEN is therefore examining the possibility of manufacturing in the country to be able to serve this market better and more easily. Growth is also expected for the remaining regions, Germany and Central Europe. It is additionally anticipated that the French market will improve again for the first time in some years. The new products offered on the market in 2018 are the Azurit precision seed drill, the four-beam Karat 12 cultivator, the Primus and Albatros field sprayers with Face Lift and the CCI 1200 ISOBUS terminal.
Also, the family business made investments totalling almost EUR7 million in 2017. After substantial extension works (spending a total of almost EUR60 million over the past three years) last year’s investments mainly concerned

Here goes a tractor, it’s a Zetor... And it goes to Techagro!
The second week in April is highlighted in diaries of probably all farmers and fans of farming machinery Two years have passed and Brno again hosts TECHAGRO – the biggest farming show in both the Czech Republic and Central Europe. On more than 70,000 sq. m., several hundreds of exhibitors will attempt to attract over 100,000 visitors and convince them that their offer is the best for their needs. And ZETOR will be again there! “Over 70 years, we have been part of the world of farming making work easier for our customers. Our aim is to constantly update and extend our product offer and improve quality and availability of services. TECHAGRO is an ideal opportunity for us to present our innovations for 2018,” says Marián Lipovský, Managing Director, ZETOR TRACTORS a.s. 20180301_Techagro 1 ZETOR will be presenting the innovated model range MAJOR in the new design in Pavilion P, booth 010. The attractive look of the tractor draws on the concept which was designed in cooperation with Pininfarina, the world-famous Italian design studio. The new face of MAJOR tractors, which shall be launched in the summer of 2018, is characteristic in strong shapes stressing the dynamics and strength of the tractor and expressing emotions and energy. Even with all that, the tractor still keeps its usefulness and practicality of a working tool.

The new location of front lamps makes it possible to illuminate larger space in front of the tractor, the tilted bonnet ensures better visibility of the working area around the tractor as well as a better view for the operator while working with loader. The new UTILIX and HORTUS tractors will have its Czech premiere at TECHAGRO. The tractors with the power from 40 to 70 HP have been an extension to the offer of ZETOR tractors since late last year. Due to their universality, the can be used for farming, in road maintenance, cultivation, gardening, and hobby farming. “On average, the market share of this segment reaches up to 20 % of total sales in Europe. Therefore, we have launched the two new tractor models in four specifications,” says Marián Lipovský. The UTILIX range is made up of UTILIX HT 45 and UTILIX HT 55 models; the HORTUS range contains HORTUS CL 65 and HORTUS HS 65. The tractors are powerful, easy to control and simple for maintenance. The new tractors will be available to customers all around the world late in the first quarter of the year. They are ideal for working with a front loader. For this reason, at TECHAGRO, ZETOR is going to present the extended ZETOR SYSTEM offer which includes front loader.
Further, the visitors will be able to see the new generation of tractors of the PROXIMA and FORTERRA model ranges. The tractors are equipped with more effective braking systems, employing a number of safety features. Newly, the tractors feature more pressurized cabins which prevent pieces of dirt from getting inside. Unification of control features and control panels in terms of color as well as a new dashboard with advanced functions make the work of the operator easier. Moreover, FORTERRA HSX and HD are also equipped with ECO transmission which keeps the tractor in optimum revolutions both during fieldwork and in transport. This saves operation costs by up to 20 % depending on the performed activity. “This year is the 20th anniversary of launching FORTERRA tractors. The model range is appreciated both by customers and professionals. In 2017, a professional jury composed of 23 journalists of prestigious European farming magazines included FORTERRA HD among seven best tractors in Europe. The tractor is popular mainly for its strength, robustness, and durability. The farmers like the tractor as it is able to do the hard work, including activities which are usually done by more powerful tractors. In their history, the tractors made their way to more than 21,000 users in 55 countries of the world,” says Marián Lipovský.

Get ready for change and the British Pig & Poultry Fair 2018 The British Pig & Poultry Fair 2018 - Stoneleigh, Warwickshire 15th & 16th May 2018 Farmers face a lot of uncertainty in the coming years, but armed with the best advice from the industry’s top leaders they will be able to make the most of any opportunities which lie ahead.
collaboration are key to the future of the British pig and poultry industry, and encourage everyone to attend,” says Danny Johnson, head of commercial at ABN.
Whether it’s getting ready for changing retailer demands, investing to improve animal health and welfare, or restructuring to boost business efficiencies, there is plenty that producers can do to prepare. And they can learn all about what’s in store at the British Pig & Poultry Fair, which has brought together a top programme of speakers covering the hot topics of today.
Below we feature some of the key trends to be covered in the forum programme.
“While nobody knows precisely what Brexit will bring, there are a number of key trends and changes which industry leaders are already using to benefit their own businesses,” explains Fair organiser Alice Bell. “By sharing those predictions, advice and ideas, our forum speakers can help visitors to the Fair to make their own adjustments and stay ahead of the game.” Forum topics include market outlooks for eggs, poultry meat and pigs, measuring to improve performance, and how to reduce antibiotic use without compromising welfare and performance. ABN is partnering the Fair once again, and will be running a forum on using data to boost performance. “We strongly believe that innovation and

Poultry meat outlook Demand for British chicken – particularly fresh chicken – is strong and will continue to be so, according to Patrick Hook, director at PD Hook. However, there is a big push from EU NGOs for more chickens to be slow grown, which will challenge the supply chain, he warns. “As an industry, instead of fighting these people we should have an offer for them to demonstrate responsible production.” The Brexit backdrop provides a lot of uncertainty, he adds. “Imported US chicken is a credible threat – we need to protect our supply base and sell the benefits of eating Red Tractor chicken.” John Kirkpatrick, agricultural manager for poultry and eggs at Tesco, reckons the coming year is likely to see continued improvements in welfare standards, with increased use of data to measure the outcome. “We want to adopt sustainable practices that are really delivering positive outcomes.” Egg outlook
Egg sales continue to increase, reaching 197 eggs/capita last year – and that trend looks set to remain, says Mark Williams, chief executive of the British Egg Industry Council. However, prices are likely to remain under pressure, so how can producers increase production while facing lower prices? “There is a big drive to keeping hens in lay for longer, and keeping the shell quality up in later lay,” explains Richard Pearson, head of agriculture at Chippindale Foods. “It’s about maximising every egg that comes off the farm.” In the immediate term, producers with flat decks will have to comply with new perching regulations from this August, while in the longer-term, there is the cage-free drive to consider from 2025, says Mr Pearson. “That will mean future investment in free range egg production.” Pig outlook The next 12-24 months present some significant challenges and opportunities due to Brexit, changing consumer demands and general pig health, says Andrew Saunders, agricultural director at Tulip. “But I am confident the UK pig industry can adapt to meet these challenges and we may see a more collaborative relationship between producers and processors as a result.”

New Kioti tractors are now supplied with a 4 year warranty
Kioti tractors and Utility vehicles has now firmly established in the UK market. A large number of operators/dealers have been using successfully for many years
When the tractors were first introduced to Europe in 2001 there was only a choice of 4 models. Now to satisfy the growing demand and varied use from the UK market there are 43 different models. Each model is supplied to a high specification as standard. Modern styling with flat operator platforms and user friendly positioned controls are the norm. To enhance their appeal and to show confidence in the products Kioti have now introduced a 4 year warranty cover. This is for tractors supplied and invoiced by Kioti Uk and sold to endusers after the 1st of January 2018. The first two years are for parts and labour to cover the entire tractor. Years 3 and 4 cover parts and labour for the engine and transmission components only. Obviously

reverse gears.
During 2018 there are a large number of changes and additions being introduced to the Kioti product range.
An exciting new introduction is the New Kioti K9 2400 mechron Utility vehicle. Additional engine horsepower, reduced noise and vibration, modern styling, twin wish bone and a Urethane bed liner as standard are just a few of the improvements supplied with this model. Combine this with stylish dash panel display and car style controls and it promises to be a great success.
These include the introduction of a new CK3310 hydrostatic or mechanical transmission model. Built using the same dimensions as the existing CK2810 with an additional 5 engine HP and more power to the HST. This unit will be a great seller. Ideal for commercial or domestic users. The Mechanical CK3510 and 4010 models will be replaced by the CK3520 and 4020 tractors. As a taster these new models come standard with independent, automatic headland management control for PTO protection and 12 forward and 12

The National Sprayer Testing Scheme Ian Foreman - NSTS manager Testing of pesticide application equipment and fertiliser spreaders Ian Foreman Since 26th November 2016 it became a legal requirement for all pesticide application equipment to be tested and the delegated body in the UK is the National Sprayer Testing Scheme (NSTS As well as the larger crop sprayers the obligation includes granular applicators and slug pellet applicators, but also includes weed wipers, seed treatment equipment and boom sprayers 3 metres or less to name a few. The requirement does not only apply to machines working in the agricultural sector but now includes horticulture and amenity, so the sprayers we see working on golf courses or in streets and parks all now must be tested. Sprayers are tested to the European standard EN 16122, introduced by us in February last year and now includes some additional checks, including the electronic controller where fitted. Although not a legal requirement spreaders require a calibration certificate for Crop Assurance purposes and the ideal way to achieve this would be to have it NSTS tested. As well as checking the condition of the machine, a tray test will be carried out to check the spread pattern and adjustments made if required.
of variation (CofV) over 10% will influence yield and potentially quality and this effect could be reduced by having your machine tested. Machine examiners aim to achieve a CofV below 10% for all fertilisers tested through your spreader and it is recommended to have all products tested, or at least the nitrogen or nitrogen/ sulphur products. There are over 240 test centres around the UK and 690 examiners providing sprayer testing. Over 100 examiners are qualified to test slug pellet applicators and many of these can test fertiliser spreaders too. All machine examiners hold City & Guilds qualifications for the relevant machines they can test so machine owners can be confident their equipment

Proper water pressure, volume essential to good flock performance
Raising commercial chickens successfully requires an adequate water supply, this means enough water pressure and volume to meet flock demands. However, on many farms I visit, growers don’t always understand the difference between pressure and volume or the important roles they play in meeting this objective. Water pressure and volume are both critical to the health, and even survival, of a flock. I’ve found the simplest way to understand the difference between pressure and volume is this: Pressure is how much force is needed to get water where it’s going; once it’s there, volume is how much water is needed to meet the flock’s demand. Most integrators today require at least two water sources on every poultry farm — two wells or one well plus community water. They also provide guidelines on how many gallons of water per minute should be delivered. ‘I don’t know’ To meet this need, many growers drill wells between the chicken houses so the supply is conveniently near the demand and to avoid long runs of pipe that can cause pressure loss. Yet, whenever I visit a farm and suspect water is adversely affecting bird performance, it’s difficult to get pertinent information. The first two questions I ask are: What size is the supply line from the well to the chicken houses? What size pump is in the bottom of the well? More often than not, the answer I get to both questions is, “I
28 | AgriNews
don’t know.” I’ve been on farms during summer afternoons where the house farthest from the well would only have about half of the cool-cell pad actually getting wet because there wasn’t enough water pressure or volume to reach the end of the line at that house. It’s hard to fix something if you don’t know it’s broken, and sometimes, growers simply don’t know something’s broken. Undersized pump or supply lines Using an undersized pump is a common mistake. If you have a pump capable of pumping 50 gallons per minute (gpm) but the total water demand by all your chicken houses is 70 gpm, you are going to have problems. Another common mistake is utilizing an undersized supply line from the well to the chicken houses. If the water demand on the farm is 60 gpm and there’s a 2-inch supply line from the well to chicken houses, you cannot provide 60 gpm! A 2-inch pipe can carry only about 48 to 50 gpm. Growers also often fail to increase the size of the supply line after they add additional houses. A four-house farm may be fine with a 2-inch supply line. However, if you build two additional houses and don’t upgrade to a 3-inch line or add an additional water source, there will be water-restriction issues.
Recently, conventional thinking has been that a typical 40foot x 500-foot broiler house requires about 2 gpm for drinking and about 8 gpm for the cool cells (a total of about 10 gpm per house). However, chicken genetics change every year. Chickens today eat and drink more than they did just a few years ago. I’m pretty conservative, so I feel better recommending 3 gpm for drinking and 9 gpm for the cool cells. PVC pipe is inexpensive compared to what it will cost if you undersize your supply line and shortchange yourself on water. Large birds need more water Trouble with the water supply can also occur when growers switch from growing small birds (4.5 pounds or less) to large birds (9.5 pounds or more) without upgrading the supply line. Growing larger birds requires more water for both drinking and cooling. Improved cooling is typically achieved by adding an additional 20 feet or more of cool cell to each side of your house, which requires more water, and an additional one or two tunnel fans. If you have an older farm that may only have a ¾-inch or 1-inch supply line, that line will not adequately handle the water demands of larger birds during later grow-out stages. You may need to increase the size of the well pump and the supply line in order to meet demands.
Effective Poultry House Cleaning Steve Birchall Poultry House Cleaning Services High pressure powerwashing, disinfectant and cleaners With the poultry industry experiencing more than its fair share of problems over the past 12 months or so no poultry producer can afford to hinder flock performance by allowing a build up of micro organisms. Even low disease levels drag profits back and skimping on the cleaning routine between flocks is false economy, says Lancashire based cleaning specialist Steve Birchall. “There is no opportunity these days to rest buildings between flocks. Turnaround times are tight and it is, therefore, vital that buildings are not only throughly cleaned but disinfected as well, and if there has been a problem
the cleaning and disinfection treatment should take account of it” says Steve, who has been operating a nationwide poultry contract shed cleaning business for over 30 years. His three teams are equipped to carry out whatever cleaning regime producers require and he suggests a good standard routine for anyone who wants the best safeguard. After the litter has been removed, the building and any equipment either retained inside or taken out should be power washed at about 2,500 psi with a combined cleaner/ sanitizer/deodorizer, which should remove some of the 80% of micro organisms at this stage.
“Older buildings are often more difficult to clean than modern ones”, Steve says, “However, if you are going to do the job at all, then it is worth doing properly and you have to take sufficient time, particularly in breeder or laying units where nest boxes and equipment have been in place for 12 months or more. Broiler units with a six or seven day turnaround are less difficult. However, people who prefer to do what is a rather unpleasant job themselves often get rather jaded before it has been done properly. If there are other enterprises on the farm, they have to keep breaking off to do other work.

John Deere expands their Gator range
Offering the company’s quietest ever cab, more room for both driver and passengers and an extremely efficient heating system Offering the company’s quietest ever cab, more room for both driver and passengers and an extremely efficient heating system, John Deere’s new fullsize Gator utility vehicles are designed to maximise yearround productivity and comfort. Available from UK and Irish dealers in early 2018, the brand new petrol XUV 835M and diesel XUV 865M models are being preceded this autumn by the restyled HPX 815E, XUV 560E and XUV 590M Gators, which feature new model numbers and several specification updates. The 54hp XUV 835M and 23hp 865M offer power steering, a CVT transmission and a top speed of 37 or 31mph (60 or 50kph) respectively, plus a tight turning circle and optimal weight distribution for superior off-road performance. For extra versatility, these Gators can be fitted with a wide range of over 90 attachments from snow blades to winches, and feature a large 42-litre fuel tank to keep the vehicle running longer between fill-ups. The spacious, pressurised cab can accommodate three people, for off-road use only. This new cab incorporates noise isolation and sound dampening components, making it the

quietest yet available on the Gator range. It also offers yearround weather protection and the heating system includes a windscreen defrost feature. Both these new, sleekly styled XUV Gator models feature ample legroom and a tiltable steering wheel to help reduce driver fatigue during long working days. The versatile and durable cargo box has a load capacity of 454kg, while towing capacity has been increased by a third to 907kg and total payload capacity is 680kg. The diesel powered HPX 815E Gator utility vehicle shares its new styling with the XUV 855M model, which replaces the 855D. The 815E’s updated cargo box also has a load capacity of 454kg and both the sides and the tailgate,
which has a pick-up style onehanded latch, can be easily removed to provide a flatbedstyle load bay if required. The durable composite construction of this industry leading cargo box makes it dent, rattle and rustresistant. Additional changes to this model include a new digital dashboard, powerful LED headlights and a restyled front bumper, to improve handling and operation particularly in challenging terrain. The XUV 560E (non-power steering) and XUV 590M (with power steering) Gator models both have petrol engines and now feature LED headlights as standard and an instrument cluster for easier operation. The new styling includes alloy wheels, which allow the suspension to follow ground contours more closely and thus improve grip.

Polaris General 1000 Deluxe with ABS now availablw in dealers
Following the announcement of the industries first ABS equipped side-byside, the Polaris General 1000 Deluxe T1b ABS is now available at dealers Developed specifically for the European market at the Polaris Opole facility in Poland in collaboration with the Polaris R&D teams in the USA, the GENERAL ABS marks the first time such a system has been made available in the industry and makes the already versatile SXS even better for both work and pleasure. The clever and robust AntiLock Braking System (ABS) is switchable at lower speeds and offers the ability to steer while braking without the tyres breaking permanent traction. Additional benefits include controlled braking on varied surfaces and improved stopping distance in some conditions. Rene Basei, Polaris EMEA Vice President, commented, “Polaris

place innovation at the forefront of everything we do and it was very important for us to be the first to bring ABS to the market it’s something we’re very proud of. Already a very versatile machine, the application of ABS on the GENERAL was a logical step and will enable users to enjoy the vehicle for even more.” Producing 100hp, the GENERAL has class leading acceleration, thanks to its offroad orientated 999cc 4-stroke twin cylinder engine. Delivering a broad max torque throughout its rpm range, the GENERAL delivers 65ftlb of torque to haul, pull, and power through the toughest jobs. The GENERAL boasts the industry’s fastest engaging high-performance All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system with all four wheels engaging almost instantly when the vehicle requires more forward traction, reverting back to 2WD when it doesn’t.
Fitted with sway bars on the front and rear, the GENERAL’s tuned suspension geometry features dual rate springs which maintain 62% of its ground clearance, even when fully loaded with passengers and cargo. The vehicle is fitted with Fox Podium X 2.0 QS3 shocks as standard, offering 12.25” of front and 13.2” of rear suspension travel and 12” of ground clearance. The shocks are adjustable for simple and repeatable suspension setting changes on the move. Other features include a dumping cargo bed, integrated half doors to protect from weather and trail debris, and a tilt adjustable steering wheel. The cockpit has been designed for the perfect balance of work and play - with plenty of storage solutions and wide seat bucket seats for comfort. The analogue and digital gauge has an autoadjusting backlight and users can change it from red to blue.

Suzuki GB’s ATV division has just acheived its best year ever in terms of market share this is thanks to a 21% increase in sales in the utility sector
Suzuki GB’s ATV division has just achieved its best year ever in terms of market share. In particular, this is thanks to a 21% increase in sales in the utility sector as the brand continues to go from strength to strength. With its tried and tested products, Suzuki has carved out an enviable reputation for being the ‘go to’ brand for the supply of ATVs into farming and agriculture, as well as achieving several notable fleet sales deals into the adventure and trekking market. The Suzuki ATV range features powerful and comfortable utility ATVs suitable for a variety of applications, with the ability to carry and tow heavy loads and help you to rule the land. From the leading KingQuad 750 with a 722cc engine, power steering, independent

that cannot be erased. This acts as a powerful theft deterrent and a tool for recovery should the worst happen. In addition to Suzuki’s quality products, the brand is supported by a strong network of trusted and knowledgeable Dealers throughout the UK.
The range also features Suzuki’s unique T-shaped seat and selectable 2 and 4-wheel drive options on selected models, which make the already fuel-efficient ATVs even better.
George Cheeseman, Head of ATV for Suzuki GB, said, “Our year-on-year growth would not be possible without the continued support of our fantastic Dealer network and loyal customer base. I would like to go on record to thank all of them for their hard work and dedication as they do a tremendous job in representing us and looking after our customers. Being confident in our product and our sales team is a great feeling and bodes well for future success.”
All Suzuki ATVs come with free EASI rider training and a free Suzuki workwear kit consisting of overalls and a bodywarmer, to keep you warm and dry out in the field. They also come with a free CESAR Security System powered by Datatag, giving each ATV a unique ‘fingerprint’ with an identity

Subaru UK announce specification and pricing for 2018 outback
2018 Subaru Outback receives upgrades to exterior and interior designs, inclusion of Lane Keep Assist completes EyeSight safety technologies Pricing remains the same as previous model, starting from £29,995 for the SE model to £33,010 for the SE Premium model. Host to a series of updates, both to the exterior and interior, Outback is a rugged crossover estate, redesigned to raise cabin quality and refine the model’s plethora of safety offerings. The Outback update showcases Subaru’s ‘Better Where It Matters’ brand ethos offering excellent safety, capability and reliability credentials. Boasting a significant upgrade in technology and trim, the changes come at no extra costs for customers as pricing remains the same as the previous model. Among the most significant changes to the exterior design for Outback is the redesigned front grille, bumper, door mirrors and headlights. The hexagonal grille redesign showcases a sharper, more defined shape and incorporates the distinctive Subaru wing design, which draws parallels to the iconic horizontally opposed Subaru Boxer engine. An addition to both the exterior design and the safety suite is a new front view camera, which has been positioned below the marques six-star badge. Placed on the front grille, the front view camera can monitor a 180°-degree area in front of the car that would normally be in the driver’s blind spot. These images, as well as visible guidelines, are displayed on

the touchscreen to aide drivers in gauging potential hazards in front of the car and improve overall manoeuvering. Allowing for increased all-round visibility, the 2018 Outback SUV is fitted with an additional side view camera mounted at the base of the passenger door mirror. Displaying the area diagonally in front of the passenger side of the Outback, the resulting imaging allows drivers to navigate through narrow spaces with greater ease. A “view” switch has also been positioned next to the X-Mode button allowing the driver to move between display options on the centre touchscreen. A welcome addition to the Outback is the inclusion of Lane Keep Assist, which completes the EyeSight driver assistance safety technology suite – included as standard on all 2018 Outback models. Lane Keep Assist offers gentle steering control if the vehicle is about to deviate from its lane at approximately 40mph or above. Subaru’s EyeSight driver assist technology suite includes: Adaptive Cruise Control, Lead Vehicle Start Alert, Lane Sway and Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist, Pre-collision Braking System and Pre-collision Throttle Management. Steering Responsive Headlights are also new to Outback, with the introduction improving driver safety and increasing visibility at night. The headlight beams mirror the driver’s steering input to illuminate
corners when turning. Interior changes include a subtle redesign to improve the atmosphere for occupants of Outback. New decorative gloss black panels and silver surrounds create a consistent and sophisticated look, whilst the touchscreen size has been increased from 7” to a new 8” multifunction colour touchscreen for the SE Premium model, which is also compatible with both Apple CarPlay™ & Android Auto™ and DAB radio functionality. The SE trim level also receives and refresh with an updated 6.5” multifunction colour touchscreen and fabric seating trim with heated front seats. Outback is powered by a naturally-aspirated 2.5-litre ‘FB25’ petrol unit. Due to the size and shape of Subaru’s Boxer engine, it is installed lower down and further back than a conventional engine for a lower centre of gravity and transitions beneath the passenger compartment in the event of a collision, providing an added level of safety for occupants within the vehicle. The Boxer engine – with its unique ‘punchcounterpunch’ rotational cycle – offers smoothness, low vibration and noise, plus excellent accelerator response. The 2.5L engine produces 175PS at 5,800rpm and 235Nm torque at 4,000rpm. The engine returns fuel economy of 38.7mpg on the combined cycle and CO2 emissions of 166g/km.
