Kverneland extends area for C&O Tractors

Kverneland has strengthened its partnership with dealer C&O Tractors, bygiving the firm an extended area for sales, service and support

K

verneland has strengthened its partnership with dealer C&O Tractors, by giving the firm an extended area for sales, service and support for the full range of Kverneland equipment. C&O Tractors has been selling and supporting Kverneland products through West Sussex since opening its Funtington depot in 2016. This new announcement means that Kverneland implements are now available from C&O’s Newport, Isle of Wight depot and its Wilton, Salisbury branch. It is a move that means existing Kverneland customers across South Wilts, Hampshire, West Sussex and the Isle of Wight will now be supported by C&O Tractors, taking over an area that was previously

served by R Hunt Agricultural Engineers. “We are delighted to be able to offer the full Kverneland range to many more C&O customers,” says Dick Spencer, C&O’s group sales and depot manager. “With high quality, innovation and durability, the Kverneland range will be a great addition to our offering at C&O.” With Kverneland-trained engineers and an extensive stock of parts and machines within the dealerships, aftersales and service for existing Kverneland customers will continue without interruption. Kverneland md Joe Bell, was equally upbeat about the expanded territory for C&O Tractors. “With R Hunt Agricultural Engineers’ decision to cut

its ties with Kverneland, we were in a position to offer much more territory to C&O,” says Joe Bell. “In addition to giving existing Kverneland customers in South Wiltshire and Hampshire the service and support they have come to expect from a premium-brand machinery manufacturer, this development also creates an opportunity to find new business with many more C&O customers.” Kverneland Group UK Ltd, Walkers Lane, Lea Green, St Helens, Merseyside, WA9 4AF. Phone 01744 853 200 The Kverneland range includes an extensive range of soil preparation and seeding equipment, grass and forage products, diet feeders, fertiliser spreaders and precision farming technology. Developing state-of-the-art feeding technology since 1991

Since 1991 Holm & Laue has been developing state-of-the-art feeding technology for performance-aware calf husbandry

T

oday, these solid and weather-proof systems form the basis of laboursaving and healthy calf rearing around the world. Many characteristics that are considered standard in today's feeding technology originate in developments from Holm & Laue. In the course of all these years, the automatic calf feeders were enhanced and extended with calf feeding and calf husbandry innovations. Please have a look at some milestones of the history of our company: 1994 Holm & Laue goes for weight-responsive ration quantities in automatic calf feeding. This means that the dispensed amount is determined in relation to the weight gain of the calves. 1996 The Joker Automatic Feeder is introduced with two mixing units, to feed two calves individually yet simultaneously. 1998 The mixing system nicknamed "TOM" is awarded the DLG Silver Medal at the 1998 Eurotier show. The spacious group Igloo from Holm & Laue approx. 15m² (161½sq.ft) is one of the most important innovations in recent years and, in the meantime, has become the cornerstone of healthy outdoor calf husbandry around the world.

4 | Agri News

2000 The new H&L 100 Automatic Feeder replaces the H&L Joker. To the tried and tested operation principles, further options are added. With a design that pleases the eye, the H&L 100 looks the feeder of the future that it is and that does not leave anything to be desired. The transition to the H&L 100 is also a new impulse for our export business. Farmers in many countries around the world can turn the advantages of our leading-edge feeding technology to their benefit. 2002 Holm & Laue extends the H&L Igloo and turns it into a full outdoor calf housing system. The H&L Igloo System is the optimum mediator between calf health and work efficiency. 2004 On the occasion of the Eurotier 2004 show, Holm & Laue is awarded the Innovation Prize of DLZ Publishers for the H&L Igloo Veranda, distinguished as an innovation particularly well matched to the daily routines of the industry. 2005 The H&L Milk Taxi completes the product offering for of state-of-the-art calf feeding with a solution for individual hutches and nursing buckets. 2006 The next development in line is a process-controlled

pasteuriser for milk intended for the calves' diet, which is available as an additional option for the Milk Taxi. 2007 The company moves to a new manufacturing facility at Westerrönfeld. 2008 A small-group housing design, the Kalo-Veranda DUO (today, the MultiMax Veranda) is another extension of the portfolio. 2009 Our offerings welcome more newcomers, Calf-Tel's individual hutches and the Pen System. Plus, the Calf Garden introduces itself as a fully fledged design for roofing individual hutches, in line with the requirements of practical application. 2010 The company brings the coloQuick colostrum management system to market. Just arrived, coloQuick wins several valuable international awards: Agromek, Denmark: distinguished innovation with maximum relevance for daily practice Innov'SPACE, France: one star for the new colostrum management method DLZ Innovations Prize 2011 in the Cattle Feeding category 2011 The Calf-Tel individual hutches are upgraded with the practical FlexyFence exercise area.

Slurry application system for multi-cut silage operators A precision method of applying slurry to grassland has been developed by slurry management specialists Tramspread.

A

precision method of applying slurry to grassland has been developed by slurry management specialists Tramspread. Using a Joskin trailing shoe and disc injector coupled to a Tramspread umbilical kit, the Suffolkbased manufacturer has designed an application system that is capable of extremely accurate distribution of slurry without the need to constantly refill a tanker. The trailing shoe is perfect for farmers opting for a multicut silage system this season. It places the slurry where it 6 | Agri News

is needed, below the crop canopy, so the chance of scorch and odour emission is low whilst nutrient uptake is much higher. Critically for those looking to cut every 4-5 weeks the method of application uses a soil engaging element which parts the grass sward and dribbles the slurry directly onto the ground resulting in very little leaf contamination. Edwin Baker, Director at Tramspread says: “By adapting the Joskin trailing shoe to operate with an umbilical system it means large quantities of slurry can be applied directly on to the

soil without the need to refill a tanker. It can be fed by hose reelers of up to 2400m allowing users to cover large areas quickly and efficiently. It is ideal for farmers looking to maximise the potential of their silage by opting for a multi-cut approach and will be a worthwhile investment for years to come. The Joskin/Tramspread trailing shoe is available in widths from 3m to 7.74m. With 28 coulters spaced at 21.5cm intervals, it is particularly well suited to umbilical use because it easily copes with the supply from a modern slurry pump.

Purple ear tags launched to promote better mental well-being

UK ear tag manufacturer, Allflex, is using its distinctive range of purple secondary ear tags to show support for mental health charity.

U

K ear tag manufacturer, Allflex, is using its distinctive range of purple secondary ear tags to show its support for mental health charity, The Kaleidoscope Plus Group. With 1p from the sale of every set of sheep or cattle tags with a purple secondary tag being donated to the charity, Allflex hopes to raise £10,000. The Kaleidoscope Plus Group works to promote positive health and well-being in communities – including those in remote and rural settings – and to provide appropriate services and support for people experiencing ill health. One of the charity’s key goals in 2019 and beyond is to raise awareness of the impact of mental illness in farming communities and to help those affected. Allflex will be supporting the charity by donating 1p from each set of sheep or cattle tags with a purple secondary tag sold between 1st April 2019 and 31st March 2020.

“It is well documented that the agricultural community suffers one of the highest suicide rates in the UK, with loneliness, isolation and the lack of opportunity for communication all contributing factors,” explains Ashley Musgrave, Allflex UK General Manager. “As a company with its heart and soul firmly rooted in the rural community, we want everyone in the farming industry to enjoy a brighter future. We have therefore teamed up with The Kaleidoscope Plus Group to challenge the stigma associated with mental health issues and to increase awareness of the devastating impact that mental illness can have on farming families and the wider rural community. “It is a legal requirement to tag all cattle and sheep, so we’re asking livestock farmers to make a difference by ‘choosing purple’ for the next 12 months,” Mr Musgrave continues. “We’re aiming to raise £10,000 for the

charity and are hopeful the farming community will really get behind this worthy cause.” Dave Pickard, Corporate Business Development and Research Manager for The Kaleidoscope Plus Group adds: “We are so excited to be working with Allflex UK on this new campaign. The Office of National Statistics reported in 2017 that at least one agricultural worker dies each week in the UK as a result of suicide, which is why it is so important that we start looking at and supporting those working within this sector. With the support of Allflex and its customers, we now have a great opportunity to increase mental health provision and support in rural and isolated communities.” The Allflex purple charity tags for cattle and sheep are available immediately and can be ordered from local agricultural merchants or through Allflex representatives.

UK sheep producers urged to protect lambs from spring disease threats

Sheep pregnancy scanners across the UK have reported variable results over the winter with some flocks carrying 20-40% fewer lambs

S

heep pregnancy scanners across the UK have reported variable results over the winter with some flocks in some areas carrying 20% to 40% fewer lambs than last year. Farmers are therefore being urged to protect every newborn lamb this spring from preventable disease threats. “It looks like lamb numbers may well be down nationally this year, but if we get a kind spring weather-wise that will certainly help producers maximise the number of lambs reared, which is what counts. However, what sheep producers simply cannot afford to do is lose more lambs to easily preventable diseases,” says sheep vet Phillipa Page from Flock Health Limited. Ms Page says that farmers facing a lower lamb crop must not react to a depressed productivity challenge by skimping on essential vaccinations that will protect young lambs against diseases that can cause significant mortalities. “Clostridial diseases and pasteurellosis are both silent killers. Typically, the first sign a farmer will see is a dead lamb; sometimes losses can be catastrophic.” “In an era when proven and

10 | Agri News

highly cost-effective vaccines are available, no lamb should die from a clostridial disease,” she adds. Ms Page says that it is impossible to control the multiple and varied stressrelated ‘trigger’ factors (e.g. a sudden change in the weather, change in diet or parasite infection) for clostridial disease and pasteurellosis in lambs, so vaccination of these newborns is essential. “Provided a ewe has been fully vaccinated against these two key disease threats, the colostrum her lambs receive shortly after birth gives them short-lived protection against pasteurellosis and clostridial diseases like pulpy

kidney, braxy, blackleg and tetanus. However, this socalled passive immunity only lasts for so long. This means lambs must be vaccinated themselves from three weeks of age.” Key points: Clostridial diseases and pasteurellosis are real threats in unvaccinated lambs. Colostrum from vaccinated ewes gives disease protection to lambs provided they receive enough in the first 24 hours, but only lasts for a limited period. Vaccination of newborn lambs from three weeks of age will protect them from the main clostridial diseases and pasteurellosis.

Adama opens new global research & development centre Adama Agricultural Solutions has opened a global research and development complex in the Israeli town of Neot Hovav

T

he new complex will house over 100 researchers and chemists and provide stateof-the-art laboratory facilities which will enable the crop protection industry to work collaboratively with academic institutions to meet the future challenges of sustainable food production. The new facility provides a modern and appealing place to work which is anticipated to attract the best scientific talents in Israel and worldwide who will be able to use the ultra-modern facility to carry out cutting edge crop protection research. ADAMA’s global CEO, Dr. Chen Lichtenstein said, "Looking at the future of the company and the industry in general, our success in the competitive global market depends on research and development capabilities as a strategic growth engine. The new research centre in Neot Hovav enables us to combine advanced scientific research with a profound knowledge of the agrochemical industry in developing products that provide a solution for global agricultural challenges." The Neot Hovav complex covers all stages of fungicide, herbicide and pesticide research and development: from basic chemical research,

development of processes and active ingredients, to the final stages of developing new products for commercial usage by farmers. Kent arable farmer, Alan Clifton-Holt, recently visited the Neot Hovav facility: “As someone who uses a variety of ADAMA’s fungicides and herbicides, the opportunity to visit the R&D centre was a real eye-opener. It’s a very impressive set-up, not only in terms of the infra-structure and laboratory equipment on show, but also in terms of the technical expertise of the scientists working there. It is reassuring to know that the personnel within an organisation as large as ADAMA understand the complexities of modern arable production, and to witness at first-hand the level of investment and type of work being done to address these specific challenges to ensure our farming systems remain viable. The opening of the new centre supports ADAMA’s wider R&D strategy, which is based on the accelerated development of processes and materials and taking advantage of a window of opportunity in the market in the coming years, when patents for dozens of active ingredients will expire.

The new R&D centre will promote the development of innovative products that use advanced technologies, together with the improvement of existing manufacturing processes, thereby ensuring ADAMA's competitive advantage in the global market.

new range of McCormick fourcylinder tractors, with a number of advances in performance and driver comfort, are now available from Argo Tractors dealerships. The three-model line-up covers maximum power outputs from 141hp to 166hp for draft work and up to 176hp with Power Boost automatically engaged, comes with a choice of equipment levels and either new slick-shifting powershift or seamlessly smooth CVT transmissions. The new Stage IV emissions versions of the McCormick X7.4 tractors offer a wellequipped machine capable of handling a wide range of tasks on livestock, arable and mixed enterprise farms. There’s a choice of simplerspec Efficient and full-feature Premium semi-powershift models, as well as stepless transmission Premium tractors.

The X7.440 has a maximum power output of 141hp for draft work, which automatically increases to 150hp under load in the upper gears – for example for transport applications – and when a PTO-driven field implements are being operated. Similarly, the X7.450’s 155hp output rises almost 10hp to 165hp for these non-draft applications, and power for the X7.460 also goes up 10hp, from 166hp to 176hp. The new P6-Drive transmission serves up more ratios in total, and six instead of four powershift steps deliver outstanding speed control versatility. Buyers get to use 30 forward and 15 reverse ratios with the standard transmission format, or 54 forward and 27 reverse with the creep option.

Auto shifting can be used in “Field” and “Road” modes, with the latter providing hands-free shifts through All are powered by a 4.5-litre all five ranges, which results BetaPower engine from in easier and often more FPT Industrial, with an SCR productive operation in plus DOC emissions control package that has no need for the field, as well as more a DPF soot filter. There are also VT-Drive versions of all three models, with an advanced CVT transmission providing seamless speed changes, easy driving characteristics and a choice of operating modes that can be fine-tuned for different applications. Two levels of equipment and different option packages are available for McCormick X7.4 Series tractors. For operators who prefer a simpler, more mechanically-orientated specification, Efficient versions of tractors with the P6-Drive transmission have a traditional right-hand control panel, manual spool valves and 6,300kg lift at the rear linkage. The three new McCormick X7.4 models offer power outputs up to 176hp with Power Boost. The Premium specification available on P6-Drive tractors and standard for the VT-Drive models includes a seatmounted armrest control console and Argo’s 30cm Data Screen Manager touchscreen terminal. This is used for setting up transmission features, the electricallyoperated spool valves, headland management sequencing and functions for the 9,300kg rear linkage.

McCormick: New-generation X5 Series tractors have more transmission options The new generation of McCormick X5 Series tractors now available from dealers throughout the UK and Ireland

T

he new generation of McCormick X5 Series tractors, now available from dealers throughout the UK and Ireland, features more transmission options for a wider choice of gear configurations. It also offers new reduced-revs 40km/hr and PTO speeds to help with fuel economy and a powerboosted braking system for improved performance with less effort as part of a generous level of standard equipment.

fuel economy credentials, the new engine has simpler emissions control hardware in the form of a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), which unlike a diesel particulates filter (DPF) requires no fuel-burn cleansing, maintenance or operator intervention. It also has a new viscous-drive option for the engine cooling fan, which runs only when necessary to maintain a steady coolant temperature and therefore contributes to the tractor’s fuel economy.

“The X5 Series is at the core of our ‘livestock tractor’ lineup and offers a lively and versatile power unit with a broad choice of specifications to suit different applications and preferences,” Argo Tractors managing director for the UK and Ireland, Adrian Winnett, said. “Together with a neat and well laid-out cab, providing a comfortable and convenient working environment with good allround visibility, the tractors make an attractive package for field and loader work.”

In the new X5 Series tractors, power and torque are channelled through an expanded selection of transmissions. Buyers can choose between a dry clutch synchro shuttle or wet clutch power shuttle, a gear splitter or three-speed powershift, and from 12 to 36 forward speeds, with a creep gearbox option available across the board.

The new McCormick X5 Series replaces the Perkinspowered first-generation X5 design with three new models powered by 3.6-litre Deutz four-cylinder engines tuned for maximum outputs of 99hp (X5.35), 107hp (X5.45) and 113hp (X5.55). Apart from attractive power, torque and

“The synchro shuttle 12F/12R transmission with manual rear linkage control will suit anyone wanting a simple, reliable mechanical tractor for yard work on a livestock farm and perhaps also for horticultural and fruit enterprises,” Mr Adrian said. “But there’s also the option to upgrade to the power shuttle with adjustable drive takeup, which apart from giving fingertip forward/reverse

selection also adds electrohydraulic control of the PTO clutch for progressive take up of power to help protect implement drivelines.” Alternatively, there’s the new 24F/24R transmission with a splitter operated by a button on the gear selector that permits easy up- and downshifts to cope with changing load on the tractor. This can be had with the synchro shuttle or power shuttle, as well as a creep gearbox that adds another eight speeds in both directions. If more ratios are required to handle a lot of field work – mowing, tedding and raking grass for hay and silage, cultivations and harrowing, trailer and spreader work, for example – then the newly-released H-M-L option provides the added versatility of three-speed powershift to complement the power shuttle. This increases the number of forward speeds to 36F/12R – or 48F/16R with the creep gearbox – for greater flexibility when finding the optimum speed for every job. With power outputs from 99hp to 113hp, field work such as grass mowing, tedding and raking are among obvious roles for the new-generation McCormick X5 Series tractors. Agri News | 15

John Deere: New security feature locks thieves out

John Deere is now offering a new PIN code locking system to help deter the theft of valuable Green Star in-cab displays and StarFiew satellite receivers

J

ohn Deere is now offering a new PIN code locking system to help deter the theft of valuable GreenStar in-cab displays and StarFire satellite receivers. This has been designed to make it impossible to use the components if they are stolen. Because of their popular ‘plug and play’ design, John Deere displays and GPS receivers have also become more susceptible to theft compared to some other systems on the market. Until now, they could only be locked and protected mechanically. To increase the level of protection, John Deere has therefore introduced the built-in PIN code lock, similar to that used on smartphones, for both components. The PIN code for the display and the receiver can be entered via the John Deere display. If the user forgets the code, they can continue working for a limited period, up to a maximum of 72 hours. After this a Master Unlock Code is required, which can be easily generated in the StellarSupport online portal. The customer’s MyJohnDeere login grants access to any John Deere component previously registered in their StellarSupport account. The new PIN code locking system is now available for

John Deere 4240 and 4640 Universal Displays and the StarFire 6000 receiver. It is bundled with the recent 19-1 software update, which permits the upgrade of these specific displays and receivers. This latest security feature complements the range of precautions already introduced by John Deere this decade to deter thieves. The company’s agricultural tractors sold in the UK and Ireland, including the 6M, 6R, 7R, 8R and 9R Series models that are made in the company’s main factories at Waterloo in the US and Mannheim in Germany, are fitted as standard with the CESAR Datatag security system, as well as an immobiliser system whereby the key has a transponder unique to each individual tractor. This means that while any other John Deere tractor key will still fit the door and ignition, the tractor won’t start without the proper key. John Deere was the first company to introduce the unique key system as standard on a full range of tractors in the UK and Ireland, in 2011. Other security related items are also available from dealers, such as lockable fuel tank caps and separate door lock keys, as well as immobiliser systems

from the John Deere owned Vapormatic all-makes parts business. In addition, all 7R, 8R & 9R Series tractors have JDLink telematics fitted as standard, with a one-year communications licence free of charge. In addition to the fleet management, machine optimisation, remote diagnostics & remote access functions, JDLink also includes the ability to geofence machines, so that SMS or email messages would be sent if the machine moved outside a predefined area. JDLink also allows a ‘curfew’ to be set, which would again warn the owner if the machine was turned on during a predefined period (say, between 10pm and 6am). While this system is standard on the large tractors listed above, it is also available as a factoryfitted option on 6R Series models, or it can be field fitted on any other vehicle with a 12V power supply.

W

ith the new Pantera 4503, AMAZONE introduces to the market a self-propelled sprayer with the new ComfortPack 1 and an innovative new boom guidance system. At the heart of the Pantera 4503 is the proven 6-cylinder Deutz engine with a power output of 218 HP. The in-line, turbo-charged and chargeair cooled engine, with its optimum overall performance, ensures, thanks to the intelligent ECO mode engine management control, the minimum in fuel consumption. If, however, additional power is required, for instance when working at steep slopes, then POWER mode is available for the driver. Pantera 4503 fulfils exhaust emissions Stage 5 and, for an exhaust after-treatment, AMAZONE relies on exhaust gas recirculation with diesel oxidation catalyst and diesel particle filter to help protect the environment. During operation, the diesel particle filter is continuously regenerated. With the aid of the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) injection, the SCR catalyst reduces the level of nitrogen oxide. The 20 litre DEF tank Valco Marketing

is positioned next to the 230 litre diesel tank. The DEF consumption is approximately 2.5 % of the fuel consumption. Found under the cover on the left hand side, the SmartCenter is hidden away with the induction bowl and the complete operator station alongside the fill ports for suction filling. The use of Comfort-Pack 1 on the new Pantera, with the TwinTerminal 3.0 down at the operator panel, makes the operation of the machine even more comfortable. As standard, it includes automatic fill stop for suction filling. As option, this is also available on the bowser fill port as well. The desired fill level can be entered either in the cab via the ISOBUS terminal or down at the operator station through the TwinTerminal. During application, the agitator control regulates the agitation intensity depending on the tank fill level. After application, the Comfort-Pack facilitates the automatic clean out which can be controlled completely remotely from the tractor cab. Alternatively, the Pantera can also be equipped with ComfortPack 2 which includes an additional fresh

water pump. With this Pack, the machine can be cleaned continuously via the additional fresh water pump and during the suction filling procedure, the fresh water tank can also be filled in addition to the spray liquid tank.. Now as option for the Pantera, the new ContourControl boom control with its active SwingStop pendulum limitation for boom widths up to 40 m is available. In addition, the Super-L2 and the new Super-L3 booms – in conjunction with the ContourControl boom control – include the new Flex-fold. The new Flex-fold makes the folding procedure 40 % quicker. Thanks to this intelligent boom folding, nonproductive times during field changes can be noticeably reduced. With the new active ContourControl boom guidance, AMAZONE offers an innovative technology, which fulfils the demand of higher operational speeds and at highest precision during application. ContourControl can also allow the boom tips to angle below the horizontal and thus always maintains exactly the distance to the target surface. Whereas ContourControl is excellent in looking after the vertical boom movement, SwingStop optimises, which is particularly useful with wider booms, Agri News | 17

Brexit frequently asked questions: What you need to know now After months of negotiation the UK and EU agreed a Brexit deal in November 2018. It can’t come to effect until it has been passed by parliament

A

fter months of negotiation, the UK and EU agreed a Brexit deal in November 2018. However, this deal cannot come into effect until it has been passed by Parliament. This set of FAQs has been put together to help explain what it might mean for farming if the deal (as currently agreed) is approved. How will a “deal” be approved? The “deal” is made up of two documents - the Withdrawal Agreement and the Political Declaration - and must be ratified by the respective UK and EU Parliaments. In the UK this involves a “meaningful vote” in the Commons to approve both documents. If the UK Government successfully passes the “meaningful vote” then the Withdrawal Agreement will be ratified before entering into force as an international treaty. The Withdrawal Agreement will then only be implemented in the UK once the EU Withdrawal Agreement Bill receives Royal Assent. This must occur before the UK leaves the EU in order for the Withdrawal Agreement to have domestic legal effect and to ensure an “orderly withdrawal” from the EU. On the EU side the European Parliament will also need to

give its consent on the final deal. When will the UK leave the EU? The UK will leave the EU at 11pm. on 22 May 2019 if the House of Commons approves the Withdrawal Agreement by 11pm on 29 March 2019. If the House of Commons does not give such approval by this time, the UK will instead leave the EU at 11p.m. on 12 April 2019. The Act of Parliament which gives effect to the UK’s departure will be amended to include both possible dates. It is possible that a further extension is requested and granted, or even that the UK decides to unilaterally revokes its withdrawal request. Why does the NFU think a “no deal” scenario is catastrophic for British farming? There are a number of reasons why the NFU believes a disorderly Brexit would have severe impacts, not just on farm businesses and fragile rural economies, but on the wider food industry and the entire UK public who enjoy and rely on a safe and affordable domestic supply of high quality food. While the precise impact can never be predicted with complete accuracy, it is clear to us that for food and farming, and more broadly for our natural environment and

rural communities, there are serious implications of a “no deal” Brexit. They include: Exports: In a “no deal” scenario, EU legislation relating to trade with third countries would effectively result in a trade embargo on the export of UK animals and animal based products (meat, eggs, dairy, and so on) to the EU. This is because the EU requires third countries to be listed as an approved country for export to the EU. This is not currently the case for the UK, and it could take months after Brexit for such status to be granted. In 2017 the total value of agri-food exports in animal and animal products was £3.15 billion. The lamb industry would be particularly impacted given that in 2017, 31% of domestic sheep meat production was exported and 94% was destined for the EU. Export tariffs: In 2017 60% of UK food, feed and drink exports were to countries within the EU. In a “no deal” scenario, UK exports to the EU would face the same tariffs as goods entering the EU from third countries without a preferential trade agreement. Those EU tariffs are set out in the EU’s Common Customs Tariff (CCT) and are particularly high in relation to many agricultural products. For instance, the equivalent ad valorem tariff is 27% on chicken, 46% on lamb, and Agri News | 19

Brexit frequently asked questions: What you need to know now, continued... 65% on beef. The impact on these sectors and many others, all of whom export substantial quantities of product to the EU, would be devastating. Import tariffs: The “no deal” applied tariff policy announcement from the UK Government confirms the NFU’s view that to leave the EU without a deal in place would be a catastrophe for UK farming. We have very significant concerns with regards to the damage this policy will cause to our farmers as well as to the wider British public. We are deeply concerned that the approach to tariffs published in March 2019 will mean a greater reliance on food produced overseas and with it a diminution of our high environmental and animal welfare standards, a scenario that will not best serve the interests and expectations of the British public. Inputs: Many farm inputs and supplies are distributed via closely integrated and fast moving European supply chains, including fertilisers, plant protection products, machinery parts and animal feed. For example, we import over 90% of our animal vaccines and medicines and it has been estimated that 20% of veterinary medicine products could face shortages, especially vaccines and biological products. For many of these products 20 | Agri News

it is simply not possible to stockpile, as products have strict sell by dates and often require refrigerated storage. Organic produce: In a “no deal” scenario, the EU will no longer recognise UK organic certification bodies, and so we will not be able to export organic products to the EU. The process for applying for approval can only commence after we leave and can take up to nine months. The overall export value of organic products in 2016 was around £188 million. Organic exports are particularly important for the dairy industry, accounting for around 20% of total organic sales. Jobs, prosperity and the economy: Agriculture is the bedrock of the UK’s largest manufacturing industry, food and drink, worth £108 billion. Volatile farm prices and interrupted supplies risks the jobs of the 4 million people employed in the supply chain. The agricultural implications of a “no deal” go well beyond the farm gate and the rural economy. What is the NFU doing to secure the best Brexit outcome for British farming? The NFU is determined to work on behalf of its members to get the best possible outcome for British farming from Brexit. Avoiding a “no deal” scenario is the first of the NFU’s six core principles

to achieve this. Top of this list is to avoid a disorderly withdrawal from the EU. We have created a dedicated Brexit hub on NFUonline, including a Brexit toolkit which seeks to answer a number of questions and provide help for our members to navigate Brexit. We have written to all MPs in the UK setting out our concerns. We have set out our concerns on the UK’s import tariffs to a letter to the Chancellor and we have engaged in the Government’s “no deal” preparedness operations to ensure that the concerns and position of UK farmers is taken into consideration. We continue to engage through our offices in Westminster and Brussels, and through the media, to influence decision makers and ensure that the voice of British farming is heard loud and clear. What is the NFU doing to persuade more people to back British farming and buy British food? The NFU continues to make the positive case for British food and farming in the media, reaching millions of shoppers through TV and radio interviews, newspaper articles and the associated websites and social media. On top of this the NFU connects with 100,000s of shoppers every week through its Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Youtube channels.

Environmental permit review for intensive pig and poultry farms

Farmers with intensive poultry or pig enterprises are being reminded that their Environmental Permits may soon need to be reviewed

U

nder new European lgislation, BAT is reviewed and updated periodically through the BAT Reference Document (BREF) for the Intensive Rearing of Poultry or Pigs (Industrial Emissions Directive 2010/65/ EU). A new version of the BREF was released in 2017 and the Environment Agency (EA) updated its permits to be compliant with the new BAT conclusions. The new BAT conclusions were published on February 21, 2017 and all farms permitted before that date have four years to comply, ie until February 21, 2021. “The EA will be carrying out the review of all intensive farming permits from early 2019 until late 2020,” said Vicky Price, chartered surveyor with Berrys at Hereford.

“Although most permit holders complying with existing permit requirements will be meeting most of the newly revised techniques, there are some additional requirements that apply to all farms, primarily around reporting emissions and in some instances requirements for new housing. “If you are considering building new sheds or facilities, expanding or changing your operation please speak to the EA to check what the new requirements are. “If the EA needs to update your permit, it will be in contact with a revised permit and further information on any changes or requirements during this time period. If you have a recently issued or varied permit (from around November 2017 onwards) you will not need a revised permit.”

To make the process as straightforward as possible EA anticipates that it can use the information it already holds about the farm and will only need to get in touch if additional information is needed. Subsequently, it will be able to charge a reduced variation fee of £380, compared to usual variation fees of between £2406 to £7218. “Although some changes may only be small, the EA will still have to vary the permit,” Price explained. “For example, a recently built site with a permit issued before the 2017 date was informed by the EA that whilst the site infrastructure was compliant with BAT, the Agency would still need to review and update the permit to bring it in line with the new BAT conclusions.

Gas stunning now for small turkey producers

Gas stunning of poultry - already widely used by large processors - is being bought within the reach of small producers in project by Kelly Turkeys

G

as stunning of poultry – already widely used by large processors – is being brought within the reach of small producers through an innovative project by Kelly Turkeys. Over the past two years the company has been working with hatchery consultant Ed Hurford to pioneer a carbon dioxide stunning system that will be practical and affordable for handling small numbers of poultry. A prototype of the new Gallus Gas System is being demonstrated at the triennial Poult Day on March 14 organised by sister company FarmGate Hatcheries and attended by well over 200 producers and others involved in the traditional turkey Christmas market. The company secured £80,000 grant support from LEAF (Local Environmental Action

22 | Agri News

Fund) to help develop the project. Last autumn Kelly Turkeys successfully trialled the technology on one of its farms, dealing with several thousand birds.

Sales and marketing of the new system will be done through Gallus Systems Ltd, a joint venture between Kelly Turkeys and Ed Hurford’s company Gallus Solutions.

A larger version has already been approved by the RSPCA and will be used by Kelly Turkeys in processing turkeys for the Christmas market this year. Now development is progressing on the small-scale unit that will also be suitable for culling purposes.

“The Gallus Gas System is aimed at meeting the challenges of smaller poultry producers and moves one step closer in giving them access to the retailers looking for family-owned brands but requiring gas as a method of stunning,” said Ed Hurford.

“The major poultry producers have invested heavily in gas stunning technology and established its benefits in carcass quality and perceived welfare benefits,” said Paul Kelly, managing director of Kelly Turkeys, of Danbury, Essex. “But outlay on this technology, and the cost of buying and storing CO2, has not been feasible for small-scale operations. This is where we see a market for our new product in this country and abroad.”

“Complying with current legislative and welfare bodies, the system uses the preferred two-stage method of slaughter which was developed using advice from the RSPCA. “This is a highly adaptable, easily maintainable and affordable system which will integrate into most small producer lines without major modifications to the slaughter area.”

Lyn Williams: A passion for caring for hens

Winning the Stockman of the Year award, in the 2018 National Egg & Poultry Awards, was a total shock for Denbighshire-based newcomer to poultry.

I was surprised when my employer approached me and said that he and ForFarmers’ Jim Gould wanted to nominate me for the category. And I was even more surprised when they told me, a few weeks later, that I’d been selected as a finalist,” she says. “So, scooping the title really was a shock – albeit a pleasant one.”

Lyn is from a farming background – her father was a dairy producer and she worked on the farm when she was in her teens and 20s, after leaving school. “But it had been a while since I worked with livestock. But my administration skills have come in handy – there’s a lot of careful record keeping and paperwork that’s required.”

Lyn found out that she’d won during the glittering award ceremony, held in London in June 2018. “A trip to London was a treat in itself – that’s not somewhere I go very often,” says the 60-year-old who, by her own admission, is a relative newcomer to the poultry industry. “So, winning made it even more special.”

Her typical day begins at 6.30am and she finished at 11.00am. “It’s a walk of literally a few hundred metres to get to work, the working day is short and I get a day off every week. I really enjoy my job and I think that’s probably key to doing it well. The time flies by when I’m at the unit – we’re busy and the work is interesting and varied.”

Lyn had worked in the hotel and hospitality industry for most of her working life and past jobs had always had to fit around raising a family. “I eventually worked my way up into an administration role, after taking a course in my 50s and was working as a hotel receptionist. But I found that quite stressful – people can be very demanding.”

Her employer, Llyr Jones, who owns and manages Derwydd Cyf, the free-range egg unit based near Corwen, told the competition judges that he was impressed at how quickly and well Lyn adapted to her new role of running the laying unit on a daily basis.

So, when her neighbour and egg producer approached her in 2015 about taking a stockperson role on the 16,000bird free-range egg laying unit that he was planning to build, she thought ‘why not?’ “I fancied a change and the job sounded varied, interested, rewarding and relatively low stress,” she says.

“She takes full responsibility for the unit and her attention to detail is exemplarily. She has undergone a very steep learning curve but has handled it extremely well, and this has allowed me to concentrate on other aspects of my farming business in the knowledge that the welfare and production of the unit is in her capable hands of Lyn,” he says. Jones adds that he actually

approached Lyn to run his laying unit before he approached the bank for investment. “It was vital to have the best staff possible because this was a high investment project for me and it needed to give the required financial return to succeed. Producing eggs for Tesco through Anglia Free Range Egg Packer, the unit was established in January 2017 on a greenfield site on an upland beef and sheep farm that had no experience of poultry farming before. The building is a multitier aviary system, which also has solar and ground source electricity, as well as heat energy systems. “Lyn has played a key role is this success and has delivered even more than I expected of her,” adds Jones. “She returns, voluntarily, to the unit every evening to check on the hens, such is her dedication and passion for caring for the hens. And this is helps to ensure that any problems are detected early so that they can be corrected quickly.” “I do go back every evening,” says Lyn, “just to check the girls have settled for the evening and are safely roosting for the night. It is surprising how often you will come across hens that may have become trapped or ‘compromised’ in different parts of the system, such as the nest boxes. You can then deal with this before any long-term problem occurs for the hen.

Britain’s strategic dairy farm network gains £1m boost The network aims to demonstrate the benefits of implementing best practice on farms

B

ritain's strategic dairy farm network will expand to a total size of 25 farms following a 'significant investment' of £1 million. This funding will support the recruitment and management of an additional eight strategic dairy farms across Britain over the next five years.

trust set up by Betty Lawes, the wife of Dick Lawes who was the founder of Volac. This further expansion of the network is a core part of the Dairy Productivity Collaboration established in 2018 as an industry and government partnership.

The network, run by levy-board AHDB, aims to demonstrate the benefits of implementing best practice on farm. It covers a range of farming systems, and farms take part for a minimum of two years.

The collaboration is chaired by Andy Richardson, corporate affairs director at Volac and aims to improve UK dairy productivity. It identifies opportunities and barriers to deploy practical strategies for the benefit of the industry.

The initiative has now secured a £1m boost from the Betty Lawes Foundation, a charitable

Gwyn Jones, AHDB Dairy Chair, said the funding is a 'step change' for British dairy farmers

and a 'significant investment' in their future. “Our collaborative approach means we can showcase excellence across the industry with a larger spread of farms across Great Britain. It will mean more farmers can access the benefits that strategic dairy farms offer,” he said. Each of the farms will follow AHDB’s strategic farm model and represent either all-yearround or block calving systems. They will showcase bestpractice, host on-farm events and openly share their figures against AHDB Dairy’s key performance indicators (KPIs).

Inventor develops ‘toilet for cows’ to reduce ammonia emissions

The invention is an automatic urinal that cows use voluntarily, it captures 15 to 20 litres of urine a day in bid to reduce ammonia emissions

A

Dutch inventor has developed a 'toilet for cows' which captures 15 to 20 litres of urine a day in a bid to reduce ammonia emissions. The system, called the 'CowToilet', ensures that the urine stays separated from the manure, which in turn causes less ammonia emission. Approximately 90% of ammonia emissions come from agriculture, according to Wageningen University & Research (WUR). High concentrations of this colourless gas are harmful to humans and animals. However, the mastermind behind the toilet, inventor Henk Hanskamp, calls his system 'revolutionary' which will 'solve' the ammonia

problem facing the dairy industry. Hanskamp has been developing a toilet for cows since 2016. It is an automatic urinal that cows use voluntarily, and has been designed to collect the urine before it hits the floor. Cows have a nerve reflex that causes them to immediately urinate. With the CowToilet, the Dutch inventor has managed to automate this technique to make a cow urinate. The toilet is placed against the cow's suspensory ligament and moves in unison with the cow. The technique locates the nerve. Once located, the nerve, which triggers the urinary reflex, is stimulated and the

cow starts urinating. The urine is collected in the CowToilet container and is extracted through a suction line into a separate storage tank. Cows visit the CowToilet voluntarily, and is combined with receiving their daily portion of feed. Because most of the urine is collected, an 'enormous reduction' in ammonia emissions is achieved, according to Hanskamp. The CowToilet also offers economic advantages, as it saves on manure depositing costs and may even be an alternative to ammonia emission reducing floors. The first models are expected to be available from mid2020.

The M2erlin just got smarter: new app allows remote monitoring of robots

Fullwood Packo has launched a smartphone app which enables dairy farmers to remotely monitor the performance of their M2erlin milking systems

F

ullwood Packo has launched a smartphone app which enables dairy farmers to remotely monitor the performance and functionality of their M2erlin automatic milking systems, enabling them to make swifter and smarter management decisions to the benefit of herd productivity and their own work-life balance. The M2erlinInfo app enables users to view real-time and historical data of each cow’s milking records, or for the herd as a whole, from any location and at any time via a Wi-Fi or mobile data connection. Parameters such as milk yield, number and duration of milkings per day and time of last milking are easily accessible, with users also able to compare 10-day and 24-hour yield averages, thereby allowing them to measure productivity and make informed management decisions on a cow-by-cow or whole herd basis. The app also delivers a series of alarms and warnings to alert the farmer/herd manager of potential problems – either with the milking machine or an individual cow – and gives users easy access to the robot’s cleaning records and maintenance schedules, thus ensuring each M2erlin is working as efficiently and hygienically as possible to

safeguard milk quality and integrity. “The M2erlinInfo app has been designed to enable dairy farmers and herd managers to monitor the performance and functionality of their M2erlin robot(s) and to provide instant access to a range of useful performance indicators and key system alarms in one easy to use package,” explains Rik Schoenmaker, Director of Sales and Marketing for Fullwood Packo. “The app’s easy to read dashboard presents a wealth of practical data in a user-friendly format which can be used to manage each M2erlin machine more effectively and more promptly with the ultimate aim of producing more milk from healthier, happier cows.” The M2erlinInfo app also warns of any deviations in terms of cluster attachment timings and milk captured during the first two minutes of milking to provide an immediate warning of potential problems, thereby enabling swift remedial action to be taken. “Development of the new app illustrates Fullwood Packo’s ethos of putting the farmer and their herd at the heart of everything we do and to provide added value to the Fullwood Packo range of

smart milking and cooling solutions,” Mr Schoenmaker continues. “Feedback from existing M2erlin users is that the app will enable them to monitor, measure and maximise the performance of their robots as well as improving their work-life balance by giving them the flexibility to keep a close eye on proceedings even when they are away from the farm, thereby enabling them to work smarter, not harder.” The app has been tested on several farms where it has proven to be a useful farm management tool: Peter van den Bosch, Haaften, Netherlands “The M2erlinInfo app is the perfect accompaniment to my robotic milking system. It helps me to keep an eye on the robots irrespective of what I’m doing or where I’m working and makes managing the herd less stressful and less time-consuming. I’ve used the app for a range of purposes – from checking on recently calved cows to make sure they’re milking properly, to inspecting the robots’ cleaning records to make sure they’ve been cleaned correctly – and its proven to be a really easy and convenient tool to use.”

The NFU: Dairy marketing hits the big screen

Cinema advertising is being used for the first time as part of AHDB and Dairy Uk’s £1.2 million marketing campaign

Cinema advertising is being used for the first time as part of AHDB and Dairy UK’s £1.2 million consumer marketing campaign, which runs nationwide for the next ten weeks. Now in its second year, the promotional activity, which is backed by the NFU, will also include videos on social media and on-demand TV alongside digital outdoor advertising throughout London. The new push will target young families with preschool aged children in a bid to engage time-poor but dietconscious parents. Using the spoof Government

organisation - ‘The Department of Dairy Related Scrumptious Affairs’ - emotive taste messages will be used to remind them about the nutritional value of dairy products such as milk, cheese and yogurt. NFU dairy farmer members can promote the campaign locally by ordering branded posters, banners, re-useable coffee cups and car stickers to use on-farm and at local events by clicking here. Judith Bryans, Dairy UK chief executive said: “We want millennial parents to reevaluate their love of dairy so have heavily invested in media that will drive noticeability and engagement. This year’s

campaign is set to be bigger and bolder.” Rebecca Miah, AHDB head of dairy marketing said: “People really enjoyed the humour from the initial campaign. The next phase builds upon that success and introduces new ways dairy can be enjoyed using cinema, iconic poster sites and social media activity. “Cinema advertising is a great way to target a captive audience while they’re in a positive frame of mind. They often combine the experience with a meal out so it’s a perfect time to promote positive dairy messages.”

Honda launches ‘best ever’ finance offer for ATV’s Honda has launched a 0% APR finance package for its ‘go anywhere’ range of all-terrain vehicles • • •

0% APR representative HP available for Honda’s ATV range Offer available from 1 March - 30 April 2019 Datatool TrakKING Adventure GPS offered free of charge

Honda has launched a 0% APR finance package for its ‘go anywhere’ range of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), which includes the TRX250 Fourtrax, TRX420 Fourtrax and TRX500 Foreman models. Available over a two-year term, the attractive hire purchase package is available until 30 April 2019. The offer also includes a complimentary Datatool TrakKING Adventure GPS with every new purchase, providing proven protection against vehicle theft. Customers in the market for a class-leading Honda ATV could be driving away with a minimum deposit of just 10% and low monthly repayments over a twoyear term. For example, under the new scheme, a TRX250 Fourtrax costing £5,160 can be purchased with a 20% deposit and 24 monthly payments of £172.

Alternatively, the 24 monthly payments can be reduced to £96.75, assuming payment of a 20% deposit and a final balloon payment of £1,806.

Andrew Parr, Sales Operations Department Manager at Honda Motor Europe Ltd, commented: “We’re delighted to announce our most competitive and flexible ATV finance package ever. Combine this with our unrivalled aftersales service, plus a free TrackKING Adventure Datatool (worth £349) – and you’ve got a hugely attractive proposition. “We take safety and security incredibly seriously and wanted to highlight the positive role manufacturers can play in tackling rural crime. Latest data suggests that in the last 12 months, 69 per cent of farmers and rural businesses have been victims of crime, so this added feature is really valuable. “By using Datatool TrakKING Adventure, customers are also provided with ‘G Sense’ impact alert notifications, which use a highly-sensitive 3D accelerometer to detect rollovers or high g-force impacts and alert an emergency contact via SMS – ideal for those working by themselves in remote locations.”

ATVTrac chosen by TGB as official security supplier ATVTrac is delighted to agree terms with expanding ATV and offroad vehicle brand, TGB, receiving endorsement for its renowned tracking device, now available for fitment across the entire TGB range. Successfully proven in the motorcycle market, where theft is an ever increasing problem for owners, the same team turned their attention to the ATV and powersports market in 2012, bringing functions to the industry that were not previously available, setting the benchmark in the process. ATVTrac’s Rupert Archer Smith commented, “We are delighted to agree terms with TGB and very pleased to see them taking security so seriously. On top of the security element, we’ve worked hard to make ATVTrac a truly useful asset, enabling single users and large estate operators to make use of its additional functions too.” As well as Thatcham approved security that protects owner’s machines via GPS, GPRS and RF technology, ATVTrac utilises the same technology to keep workers and riders safe too, with handy functions like ATV Over, that can text or email a colleague or loved one,

should the ATV topple over with the ignition turned on. ATVTrac’s onboard technology is backed up by a Secure Operating Centre (SOC), who monitor movements 24/7, seven days a week, liaising with owners and police should a theft occur. TGB UK representative, Henry Maplethorpe, added, “Theft is an ever present threat for customers and so we were keen to offer a trusted solution. While there are many types of security product on the market, we believe that tracking is really the only effective solution. Having seen both the functionality and success of ATVTrac, with their wide-ranging experience in other sectors, we were delighted to agree terms with them.” ATVTrac has a recommended retail price of £332.50 + VAT, with the first year’s subscription included. Subsequent year subscription costs are £8.33+VAT per month via direct debit or as follows: 1 year – £82.50, 2 year – £149.17, 3 – year £190.83. ATVTrac has no other hidden costs, all text notifications and emails are included in the subscription cost. For further information please visit www.atvtrac. co.uk

Key features Stealth Installation All authorised ATVTrac dealers are trained to ensure that your unit is installed in the most covert location possible, giving the best levels of protection and adhering to Thatcham’s high security standards - it's essential.

Self Maintaining ATVTrac has its own internal battery, so it doesn’t rely solely on the machine’s own battery for power. If it detects a drop in the machine’s voltage, you’ll receive a helpful text to tell you so. The internal battery lasts for up to 30 days.

24-7 Operations Center Our secure operating centre doesn’t sleep, so you’re protected 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If the unthinkable happens, our team contact you via text, phone and email and then liaise directly with the authorities to pinpoint your machine.

Real-time Monitoring Once you’ve registered your ATVTrac unit you have total control, 24/7. Edit your details, add co-workers for notifications and even select the voltage threshold for receiving low battery notifications. Sending a lone-worker out on a remote job? Keep an eye on their location for peace of mind or send your nearest machine to the next job by monitoring more than one tracked machine on the app.

The multi award-winning Isuzu D-Max gets new award

Isuzu picks up an award for pick-up and 4X4 pro in the pick-up of the year awards 2019

The multi award-winning Isuzu D-Max has just been awarded ‘Pick-up of the Year’ 2019 by Pick-up & 4x4 Pro, a testimony to our ongoing desire to provide the best working pick-up for professionals. This is hot on the heels of being crowned What Van? ‘Pick-up of the Year’ for the second consecutive year (2018 & 2019) and Pick-up of the Year in the Commercial Fleet Awards! The Isuzu D-Max was awarded Pick-up of The Year for 2019 with the Pick-up & 4x4 Pro praising both its substance and style. The Isuzu D-Max emerged victorious, beating strong competition from rivals in a highly contested sector. Judges were impressed by the economy and refinement of the innovative 164 PS turbo diesel engine, that provides impressive performance and builds upon the Isuzu D-Max’s reliable workhorse character.

44 | Agri News

With a 3.5 tonne towing capacity and over 1 tonne payload, the Isuzu D-Max was also praised for providing a quieter, more economical driving experience. The 1.9L turbo diesel engine meets Euro 6 standards without the need for the addition of AdBlue, unlike most of the Isuzu D-Max’s competitors. The breadth of the Isuzu D-Max range also impressed judges; with single, extended and double-cab formats available, as well as a wide choice of trim levels. Coupled with the attractive five-year/125,000-mile warranty package and 5 years’ roadside assistance (in the UK & Europe), the Isuzu D-Max proved it was truly built for the professionals who use it. Pick-up & 4x4 Pro said of the win: ‘The D-Max is utilitarian at its core and doesn’t try to disguise it, which is charming and

endearing, yet it is still perfectly civilised regardless. And that is why we comfortably chose it as our Pick-up of the Year for 2019.’ Isuzu UK Head of Marketing George Wallis commented: “This 2019 Pick-up of the year is our 10th award in the last 12 months for the Isuzu D-Max and is a testimony to the great product which our customers already love and trust. Isuzu is proud to make reliable and quality vehicles for the professionals that need them, and this award highlights the Isuzu truly is a step above the rest.” Following an already hugely successful 2018 for the awardwinning Isuzu D-Max, winning the second Pick-up of the Year” for 2019 already, is a fitting start to the New Year.
