Most powerful X7 Series tractors now available in efficient spec ............................................................... Simpler-spec versions of the two most powerful models in the McCormick X7 series have been introduced, joining the Efficient versions of other models in the line-up that were added to the range last year.

“These additional Efficient models are being introduced at the request of operators wanting a high-performance, high-power tractor with a reasonable amount of automation but without the ‘bells and whistles’ features of the top-spec Premium models,” the sales director and general manager of AgriArgo UK, the McCormick distributor in Great Britain and Ireland, Ray Spinks, said. The Efficient specification was introduced last year on 143hp to 166hp four-cylinder models in the McCormick X7 Series, and on a pair of six-cylinder tractors – the 160hp X7.650, which itself was a new addition to the range, and the 165/175hp X7.660. Now, it’s also available on the X7.670, which has 177hp for draft work boosting to 192hp for PTO implements and towing trailers, tankers and spreaders, and on the X7.680, with 188hp rising to 212hp. Standard specification for the new models includes three mechanical spool valves plus one electric valve; 123 lit/min load-sensing hydraulics plus a 44-lit/min pump dedicated to steering and ancillaries;

the 2424-speed Pro Drive transmission; four-speed PTO with “economy” as well as “power” gearing; and 9,300kg rear lift capacity.

Inside the spacious Premiere cab, which has manual instead of climate control air conditioning, there’s a swivelling air suspension driver’s seat and a hide-away passenger seat. Outside, 10 work lights illuminate the tractor’s surroundings. Efficient spec tractors have controls for the transmission, PTO and hydraulics located on the side console. In place of the seat-mounted armrest console found on full-spec Premium versions is a neat layout of main controls to the driver’s right. On either side of the dials used for setting up and adjusting the electronic rear hitch are levers for the mechanical spool valves, PTO speed selection and the optional creep gearbox, which takes the total complement of ratios to 40 forward and reverse. Ahead of them is the comfortable multi-function joystick that carries a roller switch for easy linkage lift/lower and buttons for the engine speed memory and manual or auto road/field transmission shifting. Another two buttons regulate the single electric spool valve fitted; the optional mid-mounted electric valves for operating

a 3,500kg front linkage or a McCormick MPower loader are handled by a small, fully integrated joystick.

Although the X7.670 and X7.680 use the same 6.7-litre BetaPower engine and cast chassis as other six-cylinder models in the range, these are bigger, beefier tractors. They have a longer wheelbase (2,820mm versus 2,750mm), more weight (3,055kg versus 2,920kg before ballast) and the ability to run on taller tyres (42-inch versus 38-inch) – all of which helps exploit the greater power and torque available. They also have the same highly effective semi-powershift transmission as their Premium counterparts, with its smooth, adjustable power shuttle, fourspeed powershift and electronic manual or auto range shifting. “The transmission is constantly highlighted by operators as an attractive feature of the McCormick X7 tractors because of its progressive gearing, silky smooth powershifts and effective road and field auto functions,” Mr Spinks added. A 50km/hr option, packaged with hydraulic cab and multi-link front axle suspension, can be added to the final specification, together with air trailer braking. Puma 185 Multicontroller to Puma 240 CVX models now benefit from front axle suspension improvements, incorporating a double accumulator to create an enhanced ride for operators, The Case IH range of Puma particularly as front and rear tractors, powered by FPT axle loads change. Puma 185 Multicontroller to Puma 240 CVX models can also now be equipped with Adaptive Steering Control (ASC). This variablerate steering system allows the ratio between the number of steering wheel turns made and the steering angle of the front wheels to be altered according to the operator’s requirements. In this way, the number of steering turns required to take the tractor from lock to lock can be adjusted in relation to the work in hand. Through the tractor’s AFS terminal, the operator can select a desired steering ratio via three pre-set options or a custom setting. Also new, and for all Puma models, is Reactive Steering. This introduces sharper reaction and self-centering to the Puma steering system, resulting from improvements to the front axle, including new steering sensors. Puma Multicontroller and Puma CVX tractors with ISOBUS Class III also make possible two-way data transfer between the tractor and any compatible implement. This not only allows implement features to be controlled via the AFS 700 terminal screen, but also allows the implement to feed back information that can then control tractor settings such as forward speed, resulting in optimum performance in operations such as baling.

Fertiliser Spreader Testing – Ian Forman, NSTS Manager ...............................................................

The Agricultural Engineers Association (AEA) introduced the Fertiliser Spreader Testing Scheme in September 2015 as a nationally recognised test enabling machine owners to have their equipment checked and the results registered. We understand that farmers make a huge investment in a wide range of fertiliser spreading equipment and it’s therefore imperative an even spread pattern is achieved ensuring each kilogram of fertiliser produces the best return in terms of yield at harvest time. Although not a statutory requirement, crop assurance organisations require proof of calibration. An extremely useful addition to this would be to have machines independently checked and a tray test carried out. The tray test confirms coefficient of variation (CV) across the full width of spread with the explicit aim of achieving a result below 10% for all products tested. This offers customers peace of mind they are achieving the best value for money from an expensive and important crop input. Accurate application is equally important when considering the environment. Soil assessment key prior to autumn re-seeding ............................................................... Think you’re a decent grassland manager? According to independent soil and grassland management consultant Chris Duller, the answer lies beneath the ground’s surface.

“There are times when soil has to come before grass. Soil before milk. Soil before everything,” Chris told 200 farmers at Germinal’s grassland management and reseeding open day on July 4, at Trefranck Farm in Cornwall. As farmers gear-up for late summer reseeding, Chris stressed the need to evaluate soils sooner rather than later. Restrictions to root growth, water and air movement, combined with reduced soil biological activity within damaged soil can have significant impacts on grass growth, he said. According to him, soil with moderate damage can reduce yield up to 30 percent, not to mention setting up a more habitable environment for short rooting weeds like annual meadow grass. Along with visual inspections of soil structure, Chris stressed the importance of sending soil samples into labs for evaluation to check soil nutrient status. “It’s going to cost you less than £15 per sample, but tell you exactly what nutrients are in your field and what it is lacking,” he explained. “Ideally, you really need to start sampling well in advance of reseeding, to allow time for remedial action.” How to soil score

10 | August 2017

A few minutes and a decent spade is all it takes to score your own soil, Chris told open day participants as he turned over a scoop of soil to evaluate it. While Chris has assessments down to a fine art from years of experience in thousands of fields, he suggested grassland managers use the Healthy Grassland Soils’ 1-5 scoring guide to soil structure, which can be found in full at beefandlamb.ahdb.org.uk/ assess-soil-structure/.

“Get to recognise the signs of damage in your soils – colour/ smell/horizontal cracking/tight blocky structures, poor rooting and worm activity – poor organic matter breakdown,” he added. “Start with somewhere you expect to find damage, see if you can find somewhere that never gets damage – then go and dig a few holes in each field and see how they compare.” Grassland managers with soil falling in the 1 and 2 range can sleep easy knowing their ground is in good condition. However, a score of 3 and above may, he said, require groundwork and strict management practices to repair soil structure. Actions that can be taken without the use of implements to preserve lays and minimise operation costs should first be considered. “A lot of soil damage recovers on its own – particularly if there is earthworm activity, but it needs a bit of TLC,” Chris explained. “Because of this, where you’ve found soil damage, use yard muck instead of high rates of slurry on fields since ammonium

in slurry can kill worms. It’d be like if you sat in a full bath of salt – just sucks the moisture out of them.” Grazing system management, such as rotational grazing, back fencing, lower stocking rates, along with little and often soil nutrition, can all lead to soil structure rehabilitation. “And no matter what happens, don’t graze livestock on a damaged field on a wet day,” he stressed, adding that this not only leads to further compaction but is likely to leave you with no other option than a reseed. While a lot can be accomplished without implements, they are needed in areas with higher levels of damage. “Mechanical methods can help to speed up natural recovery, but are often not needed across the whole field,” Chris said. “Depth of damage needs to be determined to find which practice is needed.”

In areas of the field where there is surface capping, use a soil aerator with spikes or knives up to 10cm deep. If it is compaction damage, use a sub-soiler or sward lifer from 10cm to 15cm. Sub-soilers can also be used for deeper tillage in plough pans, as can a mole plough in some situations. “At the end of the day, it’s all about walking your fields,” Chris said. “You must evaluate your soil and be proactive in any problems there might be to maintain good soil structure.”

Update on biosecurity measures

............................................................... The government has today set out initial plans to update temporary measures in place to reduce the risk of avian flu in England, after the current Prevention Zone expires on 28 February 2017. Based on the latest situation and current scientific advice from the Chief Veterinary Officer, from 28 February the government anticipates adopting a more targeted approach with mandatory biosecurity measures across the country and continued housing or range netting in higher risk areas. These

measures would be reviewed at the end of April. Currently, anyone who keeps poultry or captive birds is required by law to house them, or otherwise keep them separate from wild birds, to reduce the risk of disease spreading. This requirement remains in place until 28 February and guidance on how to comply is available online. The proposed temporary measures are designed so keepers can allow birds outside from 28 February, whilst still taking reasonable precautions against avian flu during the current outbreak. A final decision will be confirmed at the end of February. Public Health England advises that the risk to public health from avian flu is very low and the Food Standards Agency has said

there is no food safety risk for UK consumers. Chief Veterinary Officer Nigel Gibbens said: Effective disease control will always be our priority. Based on the current situation, we believe mandatory biosecurity across England, combined with targeted housing or range netting in higher risk areas, is the best option to control disease, protect birds’ welfare and ensure consumers can buy free range products. We have acted swiftly to limit the spread of H5N8, including requiring all birds to be housed or kept separate from wild birds. The twelve week housing requirement has allowed keepers time to introduce stricter biosecurity measures and our intention now is to lift this from 28 February. Current rules on housing still remain in place until then, but we are setting out plans now to give people time to prepare. We will keep this decision under review.

Stiga Park Pro: Professional mowers

............................................................... The Michael Spink Memorial Perpetual Trophy has been launched by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society in honour of a local young farmer.

Mr Spink was a 24-year-old dairy farmer from Knaresborough who died in an accident in New Zealand in January. He was a member of Knaresborough Young Farmers who raised over £8,000 in his memory with a 120-strong tractor run in March. Knaresborough Young Farmers, Ring Steward Michael Warren and Mr Spinks’ family including parents Jane and Graham, sisters Jennifer, 26 and Rachel, 21, and younger brother Matthew, 16, were at the showground to see the new trophy ahead of the Great Yorkshire Show. The Michael Spink Memorial Perpetual Trophy will be presented by Ring Steward and family friend Michael Warren to the winner of the Ayrshire Heifer Champion on Tuesday. Mrs Spink said: “Mike absolutely loved the Great Yorkshire Show and he would have loved to have had his name on an Ayrshire trophy. This is not the way he would have intended it, but it’s the next best thing. He loved his Ayrshire cattle, his dad had bought him some manage when he was eight and he loved them. “Mike had also bought some Ayrshire calves before he went

18 | August 2017

to New Zealand and asked us to look after them for him. They were to form the nucleus of his own herd when he eventually returned to this country. This is something really positive for us and we are so honoured to have a trophy dedicated to him.” Mr Spink grew up on the family’s dairy farm in Scotton, near Knaresborough, before travelling to New Zealand to work on a dairy farm there last June.

Mr Spink had been a member of Knaresborough Young Farmers since the age of ten and had established a close group of friends there. Over the years they had raised thousands of pounds for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance by organising tractor runs and charging to participate. The group are organising another tractor run next year on 11 March 2018. Mrs Spink added: “Mike supported Yorkshire Air Ambulance because he was very aware that working on a farm you are very isolated and vulnerable. We know so many people who have had the air ambulance out to them. We did a collection at Mike’s funeral where over 400 people attended and helped raise over £2,500 for them as well.”

The Knaresborough Young Farmers will present the final total raised to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance at the Great Yorkshire Show.

“Mike’s friends from the Knaresborough Young Farmers have been incredible. They couldn’t do enough for us. In March they organised the tractor run and we stood at the Pateley Bridge Showground and saw them all coming in their tractors, we saw all the flashing beacons and that was very emotional. It was an amazing day. We have had nothing but kindness shown to us from them.” Charles Mills, Show Director of the Great Yorkshire Show said: “We wanted to launch The Michael Spink Memorial Perpetual Trophy for Mike to support his family and his friends to honour his name and remember him at the Great Yorkshire Show. It has been incredible to see how the farming community has come together to support Mike’s family as well as fundraising for such a great cause, we

Honda UK supports farm safety week

...............................................................

Honda (UK) is supporting Farm Safety Week with a month-long initiative offering a complimentary Rider Safety Pack on the purchase of any new Honda ATV or Pioneer side-by-side (SxS). The pack, worth £60, consists of a helmet and pair of gloves and is available on all models registered between 24th July and 24th August 2017. This offer is part of Honda’s long-standing commitment to the safe and responsible use of its products. Honda has also offered free EASI® (European All-Terrain Vehicle Safety Institute) training, on all purchases of an ATV or SxS since 2005. The EASI courses aim to improve operator skills, safety levels and awareness of the capabilities of ATV and SxS products. Farm Safety Week, running from 24th – 28th July 2017, aims to raise awareness and promote education of taking safety seriously in agriculture. The initiative is supported by Yellow Wellies, the Farm Safety Foundation, Farm Safety Partnerships, the Health &

Safety Executive, Health & Safety Executive for Northern Ireland and the Health & Safety Authority, Ireland. Steve Morris, Head of Power Products for Honda (UK) comments: “As the UK’s leading manufacturer of ATVs we take our commitment to safe and responsible usage incredibly seriously. While we naturally do everything we can to make our machines as safe as possible, it is also down to the user to take some very simple steps to ensure that they stay safe – not least wearing a helmet and gloves, undertaking some rider training and keeping their investment well maintained. We are delighted to be supporting the vital work of the wider industry by doing our bit to help promote farm safety.” Farm Safety Week UK & Ireland has been timed to take place alongside the Royal Welsh Show and there is one clear message this year – that farm safety is a LIFESTYLE, not a SLOGAN – as farming continues to have one of the poorest safety records of any occupation in the UK and Ireland. The latest annual figures

from the Health and Safety Executive show that out of 137 people killed or fatally injured in workplace accidents last year, 27 worked in agriculture, and that fatal injury rates in the sector are 18 times higher than the five-year average for all industries. Honda’s complimentary Rider Safety Pack is available on any new Honda ATV or Pioneer bought from an authorised Honda (UK) dealer between 24th July – 24th August inclusive. Honda’s offer of free EASI ATV or SxS Rider Training is ongoing, and available on any new Honda ATV or Pioneer bought from an authorised Honda (UK) dealer. Please visit www.honda.co.uk/ATV for full terms & conditions and further information on the offer.
