Sprayer roadshow high-lights new crop protection technology The latest innovations in crop protection have been on show for Scottish farmers during November

T

he latest innovations in crop protection have been on show for Scottish farmers during November as leading machinery dealerships hosted KUHN Farm Machinery’s 2019 Sprayer Roadshow. Included in the line-up at events in Elgin, Turriff, Forfar, and Fife were the company’s Oceanis 2 trailed, the Altis 2 mounted and the PF front sprayer that creates a fully mounted tank capacity comparable with trailed and self-propelled alternatives. The trailed Oceanis 2 has a maximum tank capacity of 7,700 litres, and – with compact all-aluminium booms – offers an operating width up to 48 metres. The range is available with KUHN’s MultiSpray system, which uses electric nozzle holders to enable in-cab nozzle selection, automatic nozzle selection to suit the forward working speed and to maximise the accuracy of variable rate applications, plus individual nozzle control to reduce overlapping. The Oceanis also features KUHN’s self-levelling boom system, which keeps the spray boom in the optimum position and height irrespective of field and crop conditions, thereby increasing spraying precision and reducing

spray drift. This system is equipped with a hybrid mode, which uses three sensors to distinguish between crop canopy and ground level, thereby improving spraying accuracy in high density crops such as oilseed rape or potatoes, or where the crop has lodged. The fully mounted Altis 2 was exhibited with a 2,000 litre tank, which – when used in combination with the PF 1500 front sprayer - gives a fully mounted capacity of 3,500 litres. This machine has the diagonally folding all-aluminium MEA3 boom, which limits the number of joints whilst retaining a compact design. Innovative features, such as headland boom control, give the Altis distinct operational

advantages. KUHN sprayers are fully ISOBUS compatible, enabling them to be controlled from a single in-cab terminal such as the company’s CCI 1200 console. On the Oceanis, a separate ISOCLICK control box which places the key sprayer controls (section control, boom height and angle) within fingertip reach, can also be used. Oceanis sprayers are also CANBUS compatible and can be operated via KUHN’s VISIOREB or REB3 controllers. KUHN dealerships Agricar, Fife Tractors and Ravenhill were involved in the roadshow and are all stockists of the company’s full range of equipment, including sprayers.

John Deere & Volocopter: Heavy-life utility for agriculture

John Deere and Volocopter have announced their cooperation on cargo drone technology and presented the first large drone

J

ohn Deere and Volocopter have announced their cooperation on cargo drone technology and presented the first large drone adapted for agricultural use at Agritechnica 2019. A demonstrator model of the VoloDrone equipped with a John Deere crop sprayer, which is ready for its first field flight, was displayed in the Future Technology Zone. Featuring a potential payload of 200kg, the VoloDrone is able to cover an enormous area, especially under difficult operating conditions. This first large agricultural drone is the result of a collaboration between John Deere, who bring knowledge of farmers’ needs, and the Urban Air Mobility pioneer Volocopter, whose flying taxis form the technological basis of the VoloDrone. Large drones are becoming increasingly important, not just in the field of logistics but also in passenger transport. At the same time, small drones

are already being used in agriculture for stock control and mapping, for example. Both companies see great potential for the VoloDrone’s use in agriculture, with capabilities ranging from

difficult topography to increased efficiency in the use of crop protection agents, sowing seeds or frost control. The development of this demonstrator is a first step towards bringing this innovative technology closer to commercial application after full testing in the field.

One battery charge allows a flight time of up to 30 minutes, and the VoloDrone can be operated remotely or automatically on a preprogrammed route. The drone frame is equipped with a flexible standardised payload attachment system. This means that different devices can be mounted on the frame depending on the application. For crop protection, the drone is equipped with two liquid tanks, a pump and a spray bar. Thanks to the drone’s low altitude in flight, very large area coverage of up to 6ha/ hr can be achieved and spray management improved. This would make the VoloDrone a sustainable, precise and cost-effective alternative to helicopters. Due to the system’s high flexibility and GPS control, more selective area-specific treatments are also possible. Appropriate flight and application tests will be carried out with the demonstrator VoloDrone sprayer over the next growing season. Further information on John Deere and Volocopter can be found at www.deere.

The VoloDrone is powered by 18 rotors with an overall diameter of 9.2m, and features a Smithfield fully electric Tractors drive using Llanelwedd, Builth Wells replaceable Powys, LD2 3SR lithium-ion t: 01982 553221 batteries. www.smithfieldtractors.co.uk

Landini tractors will be exhibited at the Midlands Machinery Show for the first time following the appointment of Clover Farm Services as a main dealer for the Italian marque.

But in recent years, the range has expanded to include more powerful, more sophisticated and fully-equipped tractors catering for larger grassland farms and arable units.

Clover Farm Services is also running a couple of smaller models as demonstrators and in addition to the 7-230 Robo-Six will have 43hp to 126hp Landini tractors on their Midlands Machinery Show stand at Newark on November 20/21.

Dwayn Clover, who heads the machinery sales and service business based at Swineshead south of Boston, will use the event to launch the new Landini venture, along with new franchises for Faresin telescopic handlers and Alpego tillage equipment. “We’re a regular exhibitor at the Midlands Machinery Show, it’s an event that works for us,” says Mr Clover. “But this is a very special year as we launch our new association with Landini and the new equipment franchises.” Dwayn Clover: “The Midlands Machinery Show has always worked for us but this year’s event will be special as we launch our association with Landini tractors and our new equipment franchises.” Clover Farm Services is the first dealer in Lincolnshire to handle the Landini range, which traditionally has catered

“There’s no question in my mind that these tractors are as good as anything else out there,” says Dwayn Clover. “If you want something that’s still relatively simple for vegetable work, then the Landini range still offers that; but equally, farmers and contractors wanting more features, including multi-speed powershift and CVT transmissions, can have that too. “That’s why we’re running a topof-the-range Landini 7-230 Robo-Six as a demonstrator – 206hp for

AMMA’s reputation for hosting some of the most up-to-date and innovative machinery, equipment and systems will be underlined this coming January when the event returns to the NEC Birmingham. The arable sector is no exception, and visitors will be spoilt for choice by the impressive range of kit across hundreds of exhibitor stands. Here, we outline some of the latest introductions that will be on show. New arable equipment sure to impress at LAMMA’20 LAMMA’s reputation for hosting some of the most up-to-date and innovative machinery, equipment and systems will be underlined this coming January when the event returns to the NEC Birmingham. The arable sector is no exception, and visitors will be spoilt for choice by the impressive range of kit across hundreds of exhibitor stands. Here, we outline some of the latest introductions that will be on show. Seed drills Vaderstad is introducing its new high-speed precision drill, the Tempo L 8, which has just gone into production. Said to combine excellent

high-speed planting precision with high capacity output of both seed and fertiliser, the machine has eight row units, a 3000- litre fertiliser hopper and row spacing options from 700-800mm. Weaving Machinery is launching the next generation Sabre Tine Drill at LAMMA. The new model has been rebuilt from the ground up to make low-disturbance crop establishment simple and intuitive for all crop systems, according to the company. New features include relocated depth wheels, hydraulic depth control, sideto-side contour rolling pivot, and greater trash handling capabilities. Pöttinger’s Terrasem mulch seed drills offer the next technical development in direct fertilisation through the Fertilizer Pro coulter. The system enables coulter pressures of at least 180 kg and features a larger disc diameter of 410 mm. Fertiliser is placed in a double-shoot row between every second seed row; placement depth can be adjusted hydraulically independently of cultivating and sowing depth. JC Machinery will be exhibiting the new Vredo Crop Drill System (CDS). The Vredo Agri Twin and

10 | AgriNews | www.agrinewsmedia.co.uk

Vredo Agri Air Series will be displayed with the new CDS feature, which enables sowing of arable crops directly into cereal stubbles at a 15cm row distance. The machine retains its features for grassland overseeding – a pair of slicing discs with an interrow distance of 7.5cm. To allow arable crops to be sown deeper, every second pair of discs can be pulled up hydraulically, creating the 15cm rows. Sky Agriculture will have a host of updates for its EasyDrill and MaxiDrill ranges at LAMMA. The new 20 Series updates to the EasyDrill and MaxiDrill include a new electronics package with blockage sensing, individual row shut off and ISObus control as well as a second “Pro-Hopper” allowing four products to be individually metered and distributed at once. With grain and fertiliser main tanks as standard and the possibility of adding one or two smaller Pro-Hoppers, the operator can now place seed,

fertiliser, companion crops and plant protection products accurately in one pass. Sulky UK will launch its Progress seed drill. The new combination seed drill uses up to three independent hoppers, driven from a single interface, to place seeds from different crop varieties or plant species as well as granular fertiliser, helping farmers to optimise yields and reduce costs, with the flexibility to drill in all conditions. Cultivations Reflecting the movement towards minimum tillage systems, Sumo’s new Vaxio high-speed cultivator makes its LAMMA debut. The 6m machine combines surface cultivation, loosening, levelling and consolidation, starting with a twin row of concave discs followed by two staggered rows of spring tines working to 250mm, capable of incorporating large amounts of trash. Hydraulic paddles then level the soil and a Multipacka

roller to creates a weatherproof finish. Vaderstad is showing its new Carrier XL 425-625 fitted with CrossCutter Disc, which allows the versatile cultivator to work at ultra-shallow depths of only 3cm as well as down to 5cm across the full working width of the machine. It conserves seedbed moisture while mixing crop residues into the soil and encourages an early weed chit. Mechanical weed control Claydon will exhibit a 6m-wide version of the new TerraBlade Heavy Duty Inter Row Hoe. The new 6m 20tine and 8m 26-tine Heavy Duty versions have been designed to operate in even the heaviest soils, says the company. The TerraBlade tines can be adjusted to suit row width and blade pressure can be altered to suit soil type and conditions. The largest 8m model requires a minimum 80hp tractor, has an optimum working speed of 6km/h and provides an average work output of 4ha/hour.

A range of hydraulicallydriven, interplant weeders produced by Italian manufacturer Spapperi for use on various row crops will take centre stage on the J.F. Hudson

stand. The machines, available in single, two, three and fourrow variants have groundengaging rotary weeder heads, which can be adjusted for depth, row width and direction of rotation on the move. Each head carries three vertical knives which are moved laterally between the seedlings or growing plants by an operator sitting on the implement. Opico is introducing a range of Hatzenbichler inter-row cultivators with working widths from 3m to 18m and variants to suit different crops and row spacings. Tines mounted on parallelograms with individual depth wheels run between the crop rows. A choice of points and tines can be matched to the job, and options include plastic finger wheels and crop protectors. Camera-controlled row guidance is provided by a headstock with integrated hydraulic ram to provide up to 250mm of side-shift in either direction. Zürn is introducing its Seed Terminator to the UK at LAMMA, designed to kill weed seeds that come out of a combine. The technology consists of two high-performance multistage hammer mills which process the residue coming from the sieves. Zürn implemented the Seed Terminator in Europe during the 2019 harvest season – it is available for a range of combines.

ase IH awarded for its newly launched LB436HD baler and for its new mixed-fleets connectivity partnership DataConnect / LB436 HD has new and upgraded features including pick-up, driveline, density system and knotter technology / DataConnect enables global mixed-fleet customers to view their machine data in the platform of their choice. The new LB436 HD baler has been awarded “Machine of the Year 2020” in the category “Hay and Forage”, and DataConnect connectivity solutions in the “Electronics” category during a ceremony held at Agritechnica in Hannover, Germany. The jury, composed of a panel of European agricultural magazine editors, recognized the several benefits of this new baler range, brought by its innovative new features, enabling farmers and contractors to pack more material into every bale, while reducing handling requirements and transport costs. The new connectivity partnership “DataConnect” enables mixed-fleet customers to manage farm, fleet and data more easily. New baler LB436HD With new designs and components throughout, the LB436 HD is capable of

producing bales with up to 22% greater density than the LB434 XL model, which produces the same 120 x 90cm bale size and remains in the range. Features unique to the LB436 HD include a new main gearbox and midship gearbox with gearshift overload protection for high power transfer and driveline safety. In addition, an innovative new twine knotter system, named TwinePro, is designed to boost productivity while eliminating field litter and bale contamination. The LB436 HD is fully ISOBUS Class 3 compatible, meaning not only can it be controlled from an ISOBUS terminal in the tractor cab, but the baler can also control the tractor’s actions, such as increasing forward speed in light areas of swaths, to automatically boost workrates.

of machine information (machine location, speed, fuel level, working status) in their competing telematics platforms. This will even further benefits to the recently launched Case IH AFS Connect telematics portal. “The new LB436 HD offers higher density for the same bale size, as well as economic and environmental benefits thanks to its new TwinePro knotter system, while DataConnect brings our customers the freedom they need to manage their mixedbrand fleets with the highest possible efficiency.” says Thierry Panadero, Case IH Vice President Europe.

Kuhn to launch increased capacity and higher density balers at Lamma 2020 Kuhn Farm Machinery will launch a new range of large square balers at Lamma 2020

K

UHN Farm Machinery will launch a new range of large square balers at LAMMA 2020, exhibiting the SB series with increased capacity and higher density baling. On show for the first time in the UK, the series includes the SB 890 (80 x 90cm bale size), the SB 1270X (120 x 70cm), the SB 1290 (120 x 90cm), and the extreme density SB 1290iD (120 x 90cm). SB balers have been developed with an improved crop intake system compared with earlier models. A new crop guard design, combined with increased torque on the rotor and feeder fork driveline, gives these models up to 15% higher intake capacity and greater endurance. The torque regulation system monitors pressure on the driveline, including the crank angle position sensor and plunger rod load pins. Picking up different pressures in the plunger cycle, the operator is guided to feed extra material into one side of the machine to achieve higher bale weights that lead to increased handling and transport efficiencies. Machines have been designed with full accessibility for maintenance

and inspection as a key consideration, and safety is given priority with features such as solid steps and a guide rail on the knotter deck. Driver comfort has been increased with upsizing of the flywheel to 485kg, so the operator will rarely feel the plunger strokes in the cab. Load sensing hydraulics are included as standard, with this system being used for axle locking, knife steering, roller cut and bale ejection. It also blasts an air stream over the knotters to keep them free from debris. KUHN’s widely used and proven Integral Rotor system is used on all models, ensuring optimum crop flow into the baler. All rotor types have easily replaceable Hardox tines for extended working life. Machines are equipped as standard with a doubleknotter binding system with electronic twine monitoring suitable for increased density bales.

provides the potential for increased handling, transport and storage efficiencies in all situations, most notably in the growing market for energy crops. Increased bale density is possible with the same tractor power as the SB 1290 due to the innovative Twinpact double plunger system. The plunger operates with split impact, in which the bottom half of the plunger hits the bale first followed by the top half, using the full force available on each impact. This eliminates the need for an oversized driveline, flywheel or mainframe. All SB balers are fully ISOBUS compatible with an intuitive user interface. Control is easy via the ISOBUS terminal of the tractor or via KUHN’s CCI 50 or CCI 1200 terminals.

SB 1290iD As with the earlier LSB range, KUHN offers the option of an extreme Southam Agricultural high density Fields Farm, Station Road baler, with up Southam, Warwickshire to 25% higher CV47 2DH t: 01926 813 426 bale density. www.southamagri.co.uk The SB 1290iD

Precision console trade-in scheme makes latest tech more affordable

LH Agri has launched a new trade-in scheme to make it more affordable to existing users of Topcon’s precision farming equipment to upgrade

L

H Agro has launched a new trade-in scheme to make it more affordable for existing users of Topcon’s precision farming equipment to upgrade to the latest version of its range topping X35 control console. The console trade-in scheme, which is being launched at the CropTec Show on 27th-28th November and at the LAMMA show at the NEC on 7th-8th January, gives customers the opportunity to exchange their existing Topcon X30 console for the very latest X35 version and includes the transfer of any activations unlocked in the old console. In addition, customers will also receive the new Topcon CL-10 modem which adds cellular and Wi-Fi capability to the X35. The X35 is Topcon’s rangetopping control console. Featuring a 12.1 inch touchscreen colour display it uses the latest Horizon software to control a wide range of implements including seed drills, fertiliser spreaders, sprayers and harvesters, and operations including autosteering and implement guidance, variable rate applications, flow-meter analysis, implement height and section control, yield mapping and application recording. The X35 is fully certified for

a range of ISOBUS functions (UT, AUX-N, TC-BAS, TC-GEO and TC-SC) which improve the workflow of information between machines, implements and in-cab devices. Its interface is easyto-use, with icon-based and user-definable screen views making it simple for operators to control the full spectrum of field operations. The CL-10 modem allows access to the new Topcon Agriculture Platform (TAP); a cloud based integrated agronomic management platform. It also provides connectivity for remote support, telematics and the Horizon XTEND feature. “By upgrading their existing console to an X35 unit, customers are able to access the latest Topcon precision farming functions including Auto Headland Turn and XTEND, and to export guidance lines, yield maps and crop sensing data to the cloud where they can be interrogated in order to maximise returns on inputs,” explains Richard Reed, Managing Director of LH Agro, Topcon’s preferred dealer for Great Britain. “Upgrading to an X35 also gives users the peace of mind that their precision farming implement control and GPS guidance systems

20 | AgriNews | www.agrinewsmedia.co.uk

are fully compatible with the latest operating platforms and that their systems are future-proofed and ready to work with any forthcoming technological developments.” Topcon’s XTEND feature enables operators to use their smartphone or tablet as a wireless extension of their X35 console – either to provide additional screen space, or to control an implement remotely (e.g. when testing a spray boom or calibrating a fertiliser spreader). The Auto Headland Turn feature enables machines equipped with a Topcon autosteer system to make fully automated turns at headlands using alternating, in-fill and single direction infill patterns. By assessing machinery geometry and available turning space, this system ensures headland turns are performed accurately and efficiently, thus ensuring the implement being used is precisely positioned for each field pass. This is of particular benefit when working on land where there are no visual references to indicate where to turn and can also help to reduce operator fatigue. For more information about the X35 or any other Topcon products go to www.lh-agro. co.uk or call 01480 496367.

“Eggs are back in fashion” is message at NFU Cymru Annual Conference “Eggs are back in fashion, they’re healthy, nutritious and consumers love them” this was the take home statement

Eggs are back in fashion, they’re healthy, nutritious and consumers love them,” this was the take home statement given to the packed audience at NFU Cymru’s Annual Poultry Conference on Wednesday 20 November. This message came from one of the conference speakers, James Corbett, Managing Director of the Ridgeway Food Group. He explained that there had been a strong growth for eggs in recent years and that per capita consumption was on the up. This has been led by various factors including lifestyle changes and direct and non-direct marketing.

this in mind when deciding on future policies for the sector.

“Although egg prices have increased slightly from this time last year, there is still a long way to go to get a fair price for our product. Broiler prices have also been under pressure and feed costs for both sectors have been high. A tough retailer environment, demanding cheaper food, is driving down prices at the farmgate and the continued political turmoil is causing uncertainty on the UK’s future trading relationships with the EU27.”

“There are challenges going forward; the threat of a ‘No deal’ Brexit has not gone away and the UK Government must re-look at its tariff regime. Zero tariffs on imported eggs and only 22% on poultry meat imports could lead to EU products flooding the UK marketplace and pushing Welsh and UK poultry producers out of business. Our current competitive and forward-looking industry cannot compete with these cheaper lower standard products.

NFU Cymru Policy Adviser, Dafydd Jarrett said: “We must not

NFU Cymru Poultry Board Chair, Victoria

“We must continue to communicate the great work taking place within the industry; one being the huge reduction in antibiotic usage, the UK is now one of the lowest users of antibiotics in the EU. Such messages need to be out there with consumers and we will do everything to present consumers with facts not fiction. “I would urge all consumers to look for the British Lion Code on eggs and Red Tractor on poultry meats to ensure they are buying a quality, assured product.”

Lion decides on new higher welfare standards for barn eggs

The British Egg Industry Council (BEIC) has decided upon a barn standard under the British Lion Quality Code of Practice

T

he British Egg Industry Council (BEIC) has decided upon a barn standard under the British Lion Quality Code of Practice, after a period of consultation with its subscribers. The new Lion standards include a raft of measures which are above those legally required, including a maximum floor stocking density of 16.5 birds per m2, two enrichments per 1,000 birds, a maximum colony size and superior nest boxes. The new standards will apply for all converted and newly built barn units with immediate effect, with a derogation for existing units until 31 December 2025. The British Lion Code of Practice will prohibit so-

called Combi systems from 1 November 2019. Following the announcement by major retailers and some wholesalers to sell only ‘cage-free’ eggs after 2025, producers have wanted clear guidance on the type of barn system in which to invest. The BEIC has worked closely with Compassion in World Farming (CIWF) and Tesco to develop a standard for UK barn egg production, capable of delivering higher levels of animal welfare, while providing a sound commercial opportunity for producers. BEIC subscribers agreed the new standard at a recent meeting. Dr. Tracey Jones, Director of Food Business at Compassion in World Farming said: “We’ve worked

closely with the BEIC and are fully supportive of this new barn standard. It significantly improves on weak legislation that otherwise permits the use of high stocking densities and highly intensive systems such as Combi systems. The new standard will not only deliver better welfare for hens but will help create a level playing field for those far-sighted producers converting out of cages before the 2025 deadline.” Both BEIC and CIWF are working to ensure that the new standard is adopted for barn production not only for retail shell eggs, but also for egg products, including those used as ingredients, across retail, food service and food manufacturing.

Lack of solution for mobile coverage will hamper rural business

A future UK Government won’t be able to fix the appalling levels of mobile connectivity in rural area without a more radical policy

A

future UK Government won’t be able to fix the appalling levels of mobile connectivity in rural areas without a more radical policy for siting masts, says leading rural diversification consultancy Rural Solutions (RSL). Speaking at the publication of the Conservative Party’s 2019 General Election manifesto, Joanne Halton, Head of Planning at Rural Solutions said rural areas were still blighted by poor connectivity in many places, with designated zones for citing network masts the missing solution. Both the Conservative Party and Labour Party have announced manifesto pledges to support expanding broadband coverage to rural areas, while the Liberal Democrats have pledged to invest in mobile data

infrastructure and expand it to cover all homes. The Conservative Party manifesto also promises to provide greater mobile coverage across the UK. But Joanne Halton said none of the pledges would successfully address the problem of mobile 4G and 5G coverage in rural areas: “We won’t get the connectivity levels political parties say they aspire to achieve without a further relaxation of planning regulations. If any Government is serious about rural connectivity, it needs to urgently modify its regulation of mast locations and heights in designated scenic and historic areas, which encompass much of rural Britain. “The measures proposed in the recent consultation on reforms to permitted

24 | AgriNews | www.agrinewsmedia.co.uk

development rights to support deployment of 5G and extend mobile coverage should be urgently adopted and Local Authorities, Communities and Providers should also be made to work together to select and designate mast sites in no spot areas, to ensure a minimum level of mobile coverage across rural areas while controlling impact on the landscape. “Whichever Government is elected also needs to recognise the current disparity in rents, which acts as a disincentive on improving connectivity. Networks are reluctant to pay higher rents for mast sites in areas of low population and to support or incentivise them to invest in this to fulfil its promise of widespread digital connectivity available as readily as other utilities such as water and electricity.”

Welsh farmers rely on BPS to make a profit, survey shows

Many hill sheep farms in Wales would not survive without the Basic Payment Scheme (BPS), new farm income figures show

M

any hill sheep farms in Wales would not survive without the Basic Payment Scheme (BPS), new farm income figures show. The payment, together with other subsidies and diversified income, contributed to about 45% of turnover and 242% of profits for hill sheep farms, an analysis of Welsh farm incomes reveals. Aberystwyth University conducted the 2018-19 survey across a random sample of 550 farms across Wales. See also: Welsh BPS farm subsidy system to stay at least until 2022

showed that the average profit for hill sheep farms was £158/ ha, with income from the BPS accounting for £243/ha. BPS reliance The reliance of farms in all sectors on the BPS and other subsidies was highlighted by survey director Tony O’Regan. “It is difficult to see how many Welsh farms can be profitable without relying on non-farming income and postBrexit support payments,” he said. Explore moreKnow How Visit our Know How centre for practical farming advice

The Welsh government is planning to start phasing out the BPS after the 2021 payment, replacing it with more targeted support.

For cattle and sheep farms, profit per hectare of the top performers was more than three times that of the average, which highlights a widening gap after last year’s survey put it at double.

After rent and finance charges were deducted, the results

Meat producers showed similar variability, with lamb

ranging from making a 29p/kg profit to losing 91p/kg. It is a similar picture for dairy farms, with the top performers making a net margin of 10p/ litre more than the bottom third. Beef price concerns But the figures show a worrying situation for suckler beef production, where performance ranged from a loss of 14p/kg to a loss of 166p/kg. Although beef had sold well for the first part of 2018, prices had dipped midway through the year because more cattle were offered for sale due to forage shortages and had continued to spiral. Relatively static milk prices had brought stability to dairy farms, but Mr Regan said producers were still leaving the industry, in part as a result of the stress and expense of bovine TB.

Waitrose to source 100% British lamb by 2021

Major UK retailer Waitrose has announced plans to source all of its own-label fresh and frozen lamb from British lamb producers to increase sales from its existing lamb producers and by welcoming new ones into its supply chain.

M

ajor UK retailer Waitrose has announced plans to source all of its own-label fresh and frozen lamb from British lamb producers. Waitrose will aim to complete the move to 100% British sourced across all fresh and frozen own-label lamb by the summer of 2021, with all of its organic lamb already 100% UK sourced. All of the supermarket’s fresh chicken, pork, beef, eggs and liquid milk is already sourced exclusively from the UK. Having previously sourced some of its lamb from New Zealand during the winter months, the move will see Waitrose extend its commitment to UK lamb producers as it focuses its investment on the future of British agriculture. The supermarket now hopes

Tor Harris, head of corporate social responsibility, health and agriculture at Waitrose & Partners, said: “We have always offered British Lamb on our service counters all-year-round and we are delighted to be able to extend that strategy to the pre-pack lamb assortment. “Waitrose & Partners is renowned for its range of quality lamb products – something we over-trade in compared to our market share. “Although we are already in a great position, we are constantly looking at ways to innovate our product and are actively looking to partner with new lamb producers around Britain to ensure we continue to offer great-tasting, high-quality lamb all year round.” NFU Cymru Livestock Board chairman Wyn Evans said: “We thoroughly welcome Waitrose’s commitment to stock 100% Welsh and British lamb from 2021. This comes at a time of great uncertainty for the sheep

sector, so today’s news that Waitrose will be moving to a year-round supply of Farm Assured quality Welsh and British lamb is a welcome boost. “This is a really positive move from one of the major buyers of lamb in the UK which highlights that there is a strong appetite amongst consumers for Welsh and British lamb products.”

Can-Am aims to influence new generation of farmers at Lamma 2020

Can-Am ambassafors Tom Pemberton, Oliver Roberts and Hannah Jackson will be taking centre stage at Lamma 2020

C

an-Am ambassadors Tom Pemberton (Tom Pemberton Farm Life), Oliver Roberts (Olly’s Farm) and Hannah Jackson (RedShepherdess) will be taking centre stage at LAMMA 2020 (7-8 January 2020) on the Bombardier Recreational Products’ (BRP) stand 6.820 to present the versatility, efficiency and innovation of the new 2020 Can-Am offroad line-up. They will be on hand at the event to explain to visitors how they have been using their Can-Am all The three influencers will also be holding a meet and greet and will be announcing the winner of the Can-Am Farm competition, which will see one lucky entrant receive a Can-Am Outlander 450 STD. The Can-Am vehicles on display at LAMMA 2020 have been designed with the user in mind and epitomise versatility, comfort and performance. The line-up is spearheaded by the price competitive Can-Am Outlander 450, built with class-leading performance, no matter the rigours of any situation put in front of it; the Can-Am Outlander 570 PRO which, through the combination of controlled handling, power and performance, allows

the user to travel across multiple terrains with ease and efficiently tow and carry cargo; the Can-Am Outlander 6x6 450 T, which has been designed to be more efficient when carrying out the toughest jobs on the farm and has the ability to handle the constantly changing terrains out in the field with ease; and the Can-Am Traxter SSV models that have been built to be tough, capable and clever to ensure that jobs are completed quickly, easily, efficiently and safely. To supplement the vehicles, the Can-Am off-road team will be on hand to highlight its exclusive partnership with the NFU; ATV and SSV security and the benefits of Can-Am’s Digitally Encoded Security System (D.E.S.S.) Key, which restricts access to the bike’s electronic ignition system; its responsible rider programme; its road legal vehicle line-up, and the exclusive finance offer run by Société Générale. James Dalke, BRP commercial manager UK and Ireland, says, “LAMMA is one of the main shows on our calendar and we are delighted to be back at the NEC, providing us with the first opportunity for new and existing customers to see the 2020 line-up in the flesh. To complement the vehicles on the stand, we are thrilled to welcome our

brand ambassadors Hannah Jackson, Oliver Roberts and Tom Pemberton for their meet and greet and panel discussion, when they will be highlighting their time using our ATVs and SSVs on their farms. In addition, we are also looking forward to engaging throughout the show with their followers, especially the young farmers who have seen Can-Am in action on the farmers’ social media channels, so they can experience first-hand how and why the vehicles in the 2020 line-up have been designed and developed to meet the demands of both the farm and farmer.”

Can-Am: Simple Security

The way farmers move around their property has evolved, from walking to riding horses, now to driving all-terrain vehicles (ATV’s)

The way farmers move around their property has evolved, from walking to riding horses, now to driving all-terrain vehicles (ATVs). In 2019, these vehicles are now the main workhorse for any farm, no matter the location or size, due to their ability to tackle any terrain and move heavy items from A to B with ease. So if they are stolen, the loss can potentially affect how a farm runs effectively on a day to day basis. Here are some top tips to ensure your ATV is secure: • When purchasing an ATV ensure the dealership you purchase it from fits a tracker system. • Ensure that you record all the serial numbers of the vehicles/machinery you may have on site as it will help you identify vehicles if one is stolen.

• Make sure you are lighting the right places on your farm (tool sheds, fuel tanks and outbuildings) and install motion sensor lights that will automatically illuminate areas if any movement is detected. • Report all incidents of theft and any suspicious behaviour to the police because if it is not, the police will not know it is happening. • Keep all vehicles out of sight and weld a metal cover over the hasp to protect the building’s padlocks from being cut with bolt cutters. • Ensure that any storage areas are locked with padlocks, hasps and deadbolts. • Regularly prune any trees or shrubbery that could potentially block the light

38 | AgriNews | www.agrinewsmedia.co.uk

sources. • Regularly tour your farm to look at spots that are in permanent darkness as well as vulnerable areas such as gates, fences and doors that could be damaged and may need fixing or replacing. • Do not leave any vehicles outside when you have finished with them and ensure the keys have been removed and placed somewhere safe within the house.

• Display signage at the front of your farm telling visitors where they cannot go. Can-Am provides utility users with innovative, economical, comfortable and versatile ATVs and SSVs.
