Landini tractors - Turkey production agreement
Landini tractors for low emissions markets to be built in Turkey - a joint venture for the production of Landini tractors destined for low engine emissions A joint venture for the production of Landini tractors destined for low engine emissions markets has been agreed by Argo Tractors and the Landini distributor in Turkey, Anadolu Motor. The agreement will establish a production facility in Sekerpinar near Istanbul for tractors with optimal features for the Turkish market and for non-emissions regulated markets outside Europe. This strategic cooperation results from the commercial relationship that Argo Tractors started four years ago with Anadolu, which Mr Valerio Morra, President of Argo Tractors SpA, says is recognised as one of the most important and well-known industrial groups in Turkey. He adds that the joint venture will build the position of Landini tractors in Turkey through a facility devoted to the production of models focused on non-emissionised markets, where agricultural mechanisation is developing rapidly and requires up-to-date products. The Thame site has also had
groundworks resurfacing completed to enhance traffic flow around the site, as well as refurbishment works carried out to its industry leading Training Academy and Research & Development (R&D) centre. The improvements also include a new cantilever racking system that will help streamline its inventory, offer more space to hold stock and help maintain its ‘first in, first out’ (FIFO) supply method. In turn, customers will experience an even better service, ensuring they receive the required machinery parts exactly when they need them and in the best condition. Supply Chain Manager at Kubota UK, Solly Wilson, said: “The investment into our operations at Thame is a great example of our commitment to future proofing our business, ensuring the right infrastructure is in place and that we are always operating
efficiently and safely. By doing so, we can maintain the highest levels of service that we provide our customers. “The new office and meeting spaces for example give us the opportunity to continue to grow and evolve as a business. In the last 12 months, staff numbers at Thame have increased, highlighting the need for additional capacity. “The new cantilever racking system also means we are far better equipped to allocate, monitor and transport products more effectively. FIFO is a widely-known supply chain method where stock is rotated quickly so that no item sits in the warehouse for too long. If this process isn’t maintained to the highest standard, stock can spend significant periods of time on the shelf, taking up valuable space and potentially becoming obsolete, causing cost issues. It’s simple in theory, but each product has its own unique characteristics that will affect the overall operation depending on how well it’s dealt with. “With this in mind, it’s vital that we’re able to operate at maximum capacity, not only from an operations point of view, but also from a customers, who need their orders delivered in a timely fashion and in first class condition.”

The National Sprayer Testing Scheme Ian Foreman - NSTS manager
Offering the company’s quietest ever cab, more room for both driver and passengers and an extremely efficient heating system The National Sprayer Testing Scheme (NSTS) is now in its 10th year of providing a standardised procedure for testing sprayers in the UK. A recent update to the test procedure has been the implementation of the new test standard EN ISO 16122 in February this year which includes some additional test items. As well as checks for safe emptying of the tank and removal of the filters, it also includes 2 checks on electronic controllers. This confirms the flow in l/ min compared against the nozzle output checks already being done. The second is checking speed over a measured 100m distance. Although the NSTS test does not include a calibration of the sprayer, these additional Andrew Lovegreen
checks will assist the operator when he carries out calibrations, as required by Crop Assurance but also best practice throughout the season. Although the largest number of tests carried out by NSTS examiners are crop sprayers, since the implementation of the Sustainable Use Directive (SUD) in November 2016, this now includes all types of pesticide application equipment except for knapsack, handheld and pedestrian applicators. Therefore, anyone applying granules such as nematicides and Avadex and slug pellets, these machines all now must be tested. There are different timescales depending on the size and type of equipment and variances within Crop Assurance and other
schemes so please check with your scheme provider or check the NSTS website, www.nsts.org.uk for further information. The most common fault found on sprayers at the time of test is filters. As well as checking they are clean and undamaged they also need to be compatible with the nozzles fitted. Second are leaks and drips. Machine examiners will check the sprayer for leaks, both static and at a higher working pressure when used in the field. The aim here is to try and force a problem that may be starting, such as a hose deteriorating, and find it in a more controlled situation rather than in the field which may cause additional risk to either the operator or the environment.Other test items

This latest diesel powered Gator shares its new styling with the XUV 855M model, which replaces the 855D. The HPX 815E is ruggedly designed for a range of transporting and general materials handling duties in any outdoor environment. Poultry keepers are being urged to review biosecurity after the Animal and Plant Health Agency identified an increased risk of AI from wild birds In its latest briefing, Dr Helen Roberts said there was a 'medium' risk of infected wild birds being found in the UK. The threat to individual poultry businesses remained low, but was dependent upon the precautions taken. Seasonal fattening farms were identified as particularly vulnerable. The late-October update reported outbreaks of the H5N8 strain of AI in poultry in Italy and Bulgaria. An infected duck found near to the Netherlands border in Germany was a particular concern, said Dr Roberts. “Given the likely migration routes to the UK, the risk level for wild birds has

been raised,” she said. “We recommend increased levels of biosecurity, particularly for seasonal fattening farms.” “All poultry keepers should review their biosecurity and business continuity plans now, as risk levels may well increase,” said NFU adviser Aimee Mahony. She urged keepers to familiarise themselves with reporting guidelines. Avian Influenza guidance Avian Influenza (AI) is a disease which can affect poultry. Some strains of AI are notifiable, therefore it is an offence not to report any suspected cases to the APHA. There are many variables in terms of the disease and
farms, therefore there is no “one size fits all” solution for an outbreak of AI. The APHA is always the first call and their teams will offer advice and guidance at every step of the process but having some plans in place will always save time in the event of an outbreak. The process also has many caveats and timeframes are often dependant on whether it is a low pathogenic or high pathogenic type of AI. There are a number of strains of AI, determined by the haemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N) proteins in the structure of the virus, e.g. H7N7, H5N1.

Even low disease levels drag profits back and skimping on the cleaning routine between flocks is false economy, says Lancashire based cleaning specialist Steve Birchall. “There is no opportunity these days to rest buildings between flocks. Turnaround times are tight and it is, therefore, vital that buildings are not only throughly cleaned but disinfected as well, and if there has been a problem
the cleaning and disinfection treatment should take account of it” says Steve, who has been operating a nationwide poultry contract shed cleaning business for over 30 years. His three teams are equipped to carry out whatever cleaning regime producers require and he suggests a good standard routine for anyone who wants the best safeguard. After the litter has been removed, the building and any equipment either retained inside or taken out should be power washed at about 2,500 psi with a combined cleaner/ sanitizer/deodorizer, which should remove some of the 80% of micro organisms at this stage.
“Older buildings are often more difficult to clean than modern ones”, Steve says, “However, if you are going to do the job at all, then it is worth doing properly and you have to take sufficient time, particularly in breeder or laying units where nest boxes and equipment have been in place for 12 months or more. Broiler units with a six or seven day turnaround are less difficult. However, people who prefer to do what is a rather unpleasant job themselves often get rather jaded before it has been done properly. If there are other enterprises on the farm, they have to keep breaking off to do other work.

The sanctuary usually has over a hundred animals in their care, about ninety donkeys and twentyfive horses and ponies, all needing a home for various reasons. Loss of grazing, owners situations change, rescue from poor circumstances or simply found abandoned, the donkeys find a new life in the charity’s sixty acres of beautiful countryside. But they still work for their living. The donkeys will often be found enjoying attending a school fair or fete or visiting children’s centres. They have a particular role working with special schools where some of the students’ needs can be met by the interaction and communication with the animals. At the beginning of 2017 the decision was made for the Sanctuary to purchase a Polaris Ranger Diesel UTV to take on all the day-to-day tasks previously carried out by staff using barrows and body power to carry feed and maintain the Sanctuary. The Ranger was supplied by C & O Tractors of Newport who also provided training. “I don’t know what we did without the Polaris,” says Derek Needham, Charity Manager, “it’s in constant use to do everything from maintenance to moving feed and carrying fence posts to towing a poo cleaner in paddocks. We’ve worked it in all conditions, heavy and wet and it takes on everything, putting smiles on faces
by cutting down on hours of work while protecting people from the weather. It’s so flexible and very popular with the girls who say it’s ‘female friendly’. It certainly frees people up to work with the public and the animals.” The main site is an education centre and learning resource for schools across the island and those visiting from other parts of the UK. There’s a range of educational activities including sessions called ‘classroom in a stable’ with ‘hands on’ practical work combined with looking at the role donkeys have played on the island and the mainland. Less formal visits are available so children can enjoy activities such as ‘treasure Hunting’ and ‘Donkey Spotting. The Polaris Ranger is also so popular with the children The Donkey Sanctuary will soon be running a competition to characterise it and give it a name.

Dacia Laureate: “Altogether a very pleasant driving experience”
Richard Fawcett at Yorkshire 4x4 Limited test drives the new Dacia Laureate and here’s what he has to say about it.. readable otherwise fairly usual layout all falling well to hand. A bit plasticky but better than many with a bit of chrome here and there. Access is good, wide doors, comfortable seating, not a lot of support in the seats but sufficient even for my 20 stone or so! You normal lot should be fine.

Shame really I was keen to see the cheaper model but hey 5seats, four wheel drive traction control and DAB, delightful power steering and a super slick little 6 speed box and a whole lot more, because spec is great really. It will never of course be a Defender but then most Defender owners never go off road anyway and certainly wouldn't be first choice on road whereas the Duster is comfortable and well mannered on road. Sufficient space for the dogs in the boot with room for the family in the rear and good space up front and plenty room in the footwell for my size 11's. Ergonomically well laid out though the two wheel drive four wheel drive knob on the lower central dash panel is a bit awkward. The built in screen for reverse cameras and nav is a good size and very
After a muddy run care is needed when getting out of the vehicle if you don't want mud on the back of trouser legs, the side rails, built in jobbies look very smart but protrude from the vehicle side so do catch you out if you're not careful. The engine, a super sweet 1500 diesel lots of torque no need to rev it, in fact better not to - it sounded a bit harsh at higher revs but as I say no revving necessary just bags of low down power, amazing these little modern diesels. Throw it into corners and it gripped nicely though suspension perhaps a shade on the soft side for road work but did mean plenty of axle articulation when crossing undulating off road terrain and keeping all four wheels in touch with Terra Firma.
