Case IH: Manage your farm, fleet and data

Enhanced data collection and management to help farmers make better informed decisions

E

nhanced data collection and management to help farmers make better-informed decisions – and dealers provide enhanced support – is driving advances in farm equipment developments. With new AFS Connect technology, Case IH is at the forefront. After a quarter-century of progress in precision farming, from yield mapping to autosteering to variable-rate input applications, farmers have gained new insights into what their land is capable of and how its full potential can be achieved. But while historical information is hugely valuable in helping make long-term planning decisions, being able to monitor and manage in real time using telematics and telemetry, and make instant decisions from this, is set to move farming forward into a new age of agriculture that harnesses the power of data. And this will not only help farmers, but also help their dealers provide enhanced service. With AFS Connect, introduced on 2020 Case IH Magnum tractors, this is exactly what Case IH is bringing to its customers. INSTANT TWO-WAY RESPONSE Users of precision farming technology have long been able to manually connect machines and office computers using USB storage

devices to upload plans and download recorded information such as yield data. But historical data can only do so much. The next era of precision farming, with decision-making based on real-time machine operating data, is underway, with huge potential to not just enhance farm management, but dealer support too. Wireless technology – or telemetry – makes this possible, with owners and managers able not just to plan field operations beforehand and analyse them afterwards, as with traditional data management, but monitor and adjust activities right at the point they are occurring. With this ability, management responses can be immediate and not just retrospective, and dealer support to the customer can be instantaneous.

with the wrong data. The size of modern arable farm enterprises means returning to base to correct such a problem can waste considerable time. Wireless technology overcomes this, with seamless two-way data transfer. Not only can machines send data, but farmers and managers can remotely provide operators with any field and task information updates should management decisions change – requiring a redrawn field boundary or a change to a prescription map, for instance. And if equipped with the correct equipment, these can be delivered to, and accessed by, not just one machine but all in a farm’s fleet. These are just some of the capabilities of Case IH AFS Connect. UP-TO-DATE INFORMATION Once work in the field is underway, the power this technology provides to managers and owners to view live machine status, including location and work completed, helps ensure machines are in the right place and working in the right way. It can even enable the status of critical items such as fuel level to be monitored so supplies can be delivered as needed.

Pre-activity planning and post-operation analysis have long been possibly by connecting machines with farm computers and smart devices through the use of USB storage devices. A-B lines for auto-steering guidance, or prescription maps for variable seed or fertiliser rates, are key examples. lover Farm Services demo duo – the rangetopping 206/225hp Landini 7-230 Robo-Six on bale carting duties with the 119hp 6-125H and Landini MClassic 100 loader. Landini tractors will be exhibited at the Midlands Machinery Show for the first time following the appointment of Clover Farm Services as a main dealer for the Italian marque. Dwayn Clover, who heads the machinery sales and service business based at Swineshead south of Boston, will use the event to launch the new Landini venture, along with new franchises for Faresin telescopic handlers and Alpego tillage equipment. “We’re a regular exhibitor at the Midlands Machinery Show, it’s an event that works for us,” says Mr Clover. “But this is a very special year as we launch our new association with Landini and the new equipment franchises.” Dwayn Clover: “The Midlands Machinery Show has always worked for us but this year’s event will be special as we launch our association with Landini tractors and our new equipment franchises.”

Clover Farm Services is the first dealer in Lincolnshire to handle the Landini range, which traditionally has catered mainly for livestock farms with a selection of ‘bullet proof’ tractors from 90-120hp that meet demand for a relatively simple but versatile power unit for a mixed loader and field-work working routine. But in recent years, the range has expanded to include more powerful, more sophisticated and fullyequipped tractors catering for larger grassland farms and arable units. “There’s no question in my mind that these tractors are as good as anything else out there,” says Dwayn Clover. “If you want something that’s still relatively simple for vegetable work, then the Landini range still offers that; but equally, farmers and contractors wanting more features, including multispeed powershift and CVT transmissions, can have that too.

transmission with six manual or auto powershift steps; independent wheel suspension up front and as comfortable a cab as you’d want.” Clover Farm Services is also running a couple of smaller models as demonstrators and in addition to the 7-230 Robo-Six will have 43hp to 126hp Landini tractors on their Midlands Machinery Show stand at Newark on November 20/21.

Row by row seed rate variation offers seed saving & potential yield increase

Row by row seed rate variation is now possible in electrically driven models within Kuhn’s Maxima 3 precision drill range

R

ow by row seed rate variation is now possible in electrically driven models within KUHN’s Maxima 3 precision drill range, giving growers new levels of seeding capability.

telescopic, foldable and telescopic with adjustable spacing.

Available on machines from 6 to 12 rows, and with row spacings from 37.5cm up to 80cm, electric drive technology will allow variation of seed rate row by row. This can be carried out manually from the tractor cab or as determined by a variable rate map. Work carried out by KUHN in the development of the technology has shown that varying the seed rate in response to soil conditions can lead to seed savings of 2-3% when used in conjunction with section control (automated row shut-off). In addition to seed savings, variable seed rate also optimises plant populations according to available water and soil nutrients, with this resulting in an overall potential yield gain of between 5 and 8%.

With electrically driven models exclusively available with ISOBUS compatibility, control can be facilitated from either the tractor terminal or KUHN’s own CCI terminal. With 48 volt electrical power entirely independent of the tractor, constant and smooth operation of the seeding mechanism is maintained, with seed rate variation and section control being instant and precise to avoid any seed wastage.

Maxima 3 precision drills are suitable for drilling maize, sunflower, beetroot, sugar beet, peas, beans, onions and other crops where row spacings from 37.5 to 80cm are used. The range includes 12 models in a choice of configurations, with electric drive versions being available in mounted formats including

‘The importance of fertiliser spreader testing’

Ian Forman, NSTS manager: ‘The accuracy of application for all variable costs is important’

T

he accuracy of application for all variable costs is important. Farmers are very cost conscious and applying fertilisers accurately not only helps get the best value for money from each product but also helps protect the environment. Fertiliser spreader testing is becoming more popular and in recent years NSTS has seen a steady increase in the number of tests carried out. The test itself involves an initial inspection of the machine, including condition of discs, veins and agitators and that all controls and adjusters are working correctly. Once these have been checked an application test is carried out. Manufacturer handbooks and apps for setting up a spreader are a good guide, but they are only a guide. Before a tray test is

Andrew Lovegreen 10 Bickford Terrace Aycliffe Village County Durham, DL5 6LA t: 07888 840625

Dower House Preston Cross Ledbury, HR8 2LJ t: 01531 660258

carried out, the product is tested for hardness, granule size range and litre weight. Once these have been gained, the machine Examiner can reference the results against the manufacturers guidelines and adjust the machine accordingly. The operator then drives through the carefully laid out trays and once the product has been collected it is then transferred to a rack of test tubes for an initial visual analysis of the spread pattern. The results are then entered into an app which calculates the coefficient of variation (CV). Best results are for machines with a CV below 10% and after correct adjustment most NSTS tested machines achieve results much better than this. With a higher CV, the effects may not be visible, but yield is likely to be reduced. Even a drop of just 0.03 t/ha equates to 3 tonnes of wheat for every 100 hectares

Protecting the environment and watercourses is very important and many fields now have grass or wildflower margins which benefit from a low nutrient status. For spinning disc spreaders, it is worth considering having the spread width and pattern checked with the limiter in use. Best practice would be to set the spread width a short distance from the crop edge to avoid any excessive product ending up on the margin, hedgerow or watercourse. For further information, contact NSTS, or go to the website, www.nsts.org.uk where you can search for a Test Centre near you and arrange a test on your machine to ensure it is applying all your fertiliser products on target and evenly across the field.

Shepherds urged to feed more good quality colostrum

Shepherds are being urged to feed newborn surplus lambs more good quality colostrum during the crucial first 24 hours ing practices. Encouragingly, more than 85% said they always make sure they administer colostrum to any surplus lambs. However, many should feed a greater quantity to give these valuable young animals the best start in life,” says survey co-ordinator Samantha Sampson from Volac. Ms Sampson explains that all lambs reared off the ewe must be fed good quality colostrum or a high-quality replacement if maternal colostrum is unavailable, such as Volac Volostrum, as soon as possible after birth.

S

hepherds are being urged to feed newborn surplus lambs more good quality colostrum during the crucial first 24 hours of life because up to 80% of UK sheep producers may not be feeding enough. According to results from the annual Volac Lamlac surplus lamb rearing intentions survey, carried out at the end of 2019, only 20% of shepherds plan to feed the industry recommended 210ml per kg of newborn lamb liveweight. “Just before Christmas we received feedback from more than 300 UK sheep producers about their surplus lamb rear-

“Ideally, colostrum needs to be administered within the first two hours of life, with at least 210ml/kg liveweight being taken on board within the first 24 hours as a minimum.” As the UK sheep industry moves into its peak lambing season, Volac is urging sheep producers to pay particular attention to this early life colostrum feeding. “Vital antibodies cannot get into the unborn lamb via the placenta, so must be transferred via colostrum,” Ms Sampson says. “Colostrum is the key to survival for newborn lambs. It is a highly nutritious energy source that not only provides vital antibodies to protect

against disease, but also gives the lamb energy to get up onto its feet and get going. The first few hours are key, as this is when the gut wall is at its most permeable, allowing the large antibody molecules to be absorbed.” Maximising the number of lambs sold per ewe put to the ram is one of the key benchmarks for a successful sheep enterprise. With lamb prices forecasted to remain firm during 2020, it looks like it will undoubtedly pay to make every lamb count. “Neonatal lamb mortality continues to be a challenging issue for the sheep industry but improving colostrum management and feeding practices could make a significant difference on many farms. Once surplus lambs have received enough of this essential first feed during the first 24 hours of life – or a proven alternative such as Volac Volostrum – they can then move onto a performance-formulated ewe milk replacer such as Lamlac to make the most of their significant early life growth potential.” More detailed advice on rearing any 2020 surplus lambs effectively is available at www. lamlac.co.uk Alternatively speak to your local Volac Business Manager.

his year’s show will be no exception when it comes to new products, with a huge array set to be showcased. With the future of dairy farming reliant on innovation, innovative changes and the development of technology, it is clear to see from the show’s previous success, how these tools are at the forefront of industry thinking – with farmers continually looking to improve efficiency. This year visitors can expect to see more brand new concepts across the show floor as well as developments on what has evolved over the past 12 months. Expert speakers will be discussing and debating the key issues facing dairy farmers and profiling what’s new on the horizon through the Dairy and Innovation Hubs. As previously, the Dairy Hub will offer advice, political insight, guidance, knowledge and take home messages for current on farm issues whilst the Innovation Hub will continue to expand horizons, ways of thinking and introduce new concepts. Expect to see Dairy Hub discussion on emissions from the industry and the imminent effects of Defra’s Clean Air Strategy on dairy farms. Robert Craig, grass based farmer and Dave Craven from Grosvenor Farms will go head to head in a low v high input systems session discussing the carbon footprint of their farms, highlighting how their practice contributes to this, and what measures they’ve undertaken to reduce their

contribution. Focus will shift on the Innovation Hub where it’ll be all things new – products, ideas, technology, concepts and techniques. Slots will cover the positive effects of satellite intelligence, biological solutions for reducing emissions and emerging agri-tech with an exclusive app store section – identifying the latest apps farms need to download. Sessions across both hubs will aim to answer questions such as: To what extent will innovation and artificial intelligence really play in future dairy businesses? How much could be saved by adopting best practice when it comes to emissions from slurry? How can we meet future demands with genetics to breed healthy and sustainable herds? What drivers are the key to optimum efficiency? The Skills Studio will return – acting as the one-stop-shop for all things career development featuring student debates, CV clinics and business skills. The event will also host a number of animal health workshops, with specialist speakers, on planning for TB, calf health and mastitis. The event’s brand new Machinery and Innovation Hall will be situated near the second entrance and visitors will be able to explore an additional 6,000sqm hosting a range of tractors from companies such as Kubota, Armatrac and Case, feeder wagons from the likes of Alltech and King Feeders and crushes and selecting gates from companies such as IAE and L M Bateman.

To support the importance of wellbeing throughout the sector we will be hosting a Wellness Clinic. Operating on a drop in basis, visitors will have the chance to call by and receive a free check up. The tech-zone will return, where visitors can road-test new technology, as will the research centre, a collection of universities comprising of advice and guidance relevant to the whole spectrum of dairy jobs and dairy systems on the market. Our popular foot trimming demonstrations will also continue to showcase the use of thermal imaging to detect lameness problems not picked up by the human eye. Tickets are now on sale; they cost £17 when booked in advance at www.dairy-tech.uk with concessions in place for RABDF members and students. All pre-bought tickets are eligible for our personalised itinerary service, a copy of which will be emailed out ahead of the event. The itineraries are in place to ensure visitors utilise their time efficiently and will advise which exhibitors match up with the categories of interest they have outlined during registration as well as suggesting the most relevant seminars and workshops to attend. The event opens at 8:00am and closes at 5:30pm and will be signed from all main routes; parking is on site and is free of charge. NFU to lead food standards rally in Westminster

Hundreds of farmers from across the country will gather in London in March to joint he NFU in a rallying call to Government

H

undreds of farmers from across the country will gather in London in March to join the NFU in a rallying call to Government, urging them to commit that future UK trade policy will not allow imports of food produced to standards that would be illegal in the UK. The mass rally will bring together farmers, consumer representatives and experts in animal welfare and the environment, in a show of unity backing the future of British farming and underlining the role farmers play in supplying the nation with safe, traceable and affordable food and protecting our countryside. They are in agreement that British farming’s world-leading standards must be safeguarded in future trade deals. The event will take place on March 25 at the Queen Elizabeth II Centre in Westminster,

London. NFU President Minette Batters said: “This year is absolutely pivotal for the future of our country, our farmers and the food on our plates. Nothing will determine this more than how the Government shapes trade deals with the EU and other countries around the world. “This event is about bringing together people from across British business who acknowledge and value the importance of food and farming. They are crystal clear that the Government must hold the line that they will uphold British farming’s high standards in trade deals, and crucially they must hold imports entering the country to that same standard. “Failure to do so risks undermining British food production and our own domestic farming industry.

We share the Government’s ambitions to deliver more for the environment, but in doing so, we must not offshore our food production to those parts of the world who do not share our values and standards. “This is an opportunity for hundreds of people to come together and make their views clear that the Government must not sacrifice British farming on the altar of free trade and we will be inviting MPs to attend to hear that message first hand. “British farming can be one of the leading lights of postBrexit Britain if the Government chooses to become a global leader in championing sustainable, climate-friendly food that our farmers produce here. Farmers across the country are ready to rise to that challenge and we stand ready to work with the Government on that journey.”

Warning red mite infestations could affect workers

Egg producers are being encouraged to consider working welfare when tackling red mite

E

gg producers are being encouraged to consider worker welfare when tackling red mite. As many producers are aware, red mite can severely impact bird productivity and health. However, Andrew Hollins, a free-range egg producer from Shropshire, has found that the disease can also cause health issues for workers. “It is often forgotten that red mite can cause irritation to people. Publicity usually focuses on the consequences of the parasite to birds, which is why many producers will try to reduce the burden. However, it is important to remember that treating

birds will also benefit your workforce as it can prevent red mite from spreading to people,” said Hollins. When workers come into contact with infested birds, or sheds, the red mites can crawl onto workers leading to irritation which can cause dermatitis and other skin conditions. With this, there is then also a greater risk of spreading the mite from shed-to-shed and to other sites. “To prevent red mite spreading to other sheds it is particularly important to treat for the parasite, as you could end up bringing red mite into an environment that was red mite free, causing a costly infestation.”

“I am very risk aware, so I will avoid using treatments which may be harmful to those applying them. Similarly, I will use easy to apply products to make sure the workforce spends as little time as possible treating for red mite,” said Hollins. “From my experience I have found that using Exzolt, which is administered through the drinking water, minimises the need for my staff to spray chemicals which can be unpleasant,” he said.

Analysis: Who will pay for the new barn egg standards The new standard has been agreed upon, but there’s a hefty price tag attached for producers

T

he recently agreed British Lion Code of Practice for barn eggs has left producers and packers with one key question: who will pay for it? The industry could be looking at an investment of above £200m – just ten years after many invested heavily in converting battery to enriched cages. Noble Foods’ head of agriculture Jean-Paul Michalski says securing longterm contracts with retailers will be vital to give producers the confidence to invest such large sums – again – into converting to new aviary barn egg systems. “It’s early days – discussions around supply are in the very early stages. Ideally we would be looking for contracts of at least 10 years – the time is takes for equipment to depreciate to a point where any return on investment has been recovered. “This is particularly important given the previous huge investments made on many units to upgrade to enriched cages. Producers are, quite rightly, wary of making further investment without some sort of security in place. There has to be some financial and this is the best way to offer that

support.” Removal of enriched cages There are currently around 14 million birds in enriched cages in the UK and the move to the new barn standards will see numbers fall, approximately, by between 30% and 35%, due to the new reduced stocking rates permitted. Noble’s enriched caged ‘colony’ comprises 4.5 million birds – 1.5 million are owned and managed by the company and the rest produce eggs under contract. The company recently converted one unit on its 1.1 million bird site, based in Nottinghamshire, using Vencomatic’s high-welfare Veranda Aviary 2 (VA2) nest system into a multi-level barn. This flock, which now numbers fewer than 100,000 birds, is around 27 weeks into lay and the results are already looking promising, according to Michalski. “We’re monitoring performance closely so we can work out the exact cost of production, following installation. And this should help in further discussions around long-term supply contracts with all our retail customers.

Birds one week after housing in an aviary system Birds one week after housing in an aviary system “It’s important that the price producers receive for their eggs reflect the additional investment required to make this significant change. “It’s important that they can still buy eggs at an affordable price and that the ‘value’ eggs don’t become a premium product. “We’re supplying a ‘value’ egg, which can’t really command a premium on the shelf, so there has to be some form of commitment from the retailers to provide security for producers and packers.” This is even more important now it’s become clear not all retailers will support barn. While Tesco has publicly committed to supporting barn eggs, other retailers have made the decision to go 100% free-range. Sainsbury’s and Morrisons have decided to cut out the value tier altogether in shell egg, bringing them into line with Waitrose and M&S, leaving Tesco, Asda, and the discount retailers Aldi and Lidl to stock barn.
