A total of 25 red-listed species were recorded, with five appearing in the 25 most commonly seen species list. These include fieldfares, starlings, house sparrows, song thrushes and yellowhammers.

Mrs Batters said: “The NFU is extremely pleased to be sponsoring the 2019 GWCT Big Farmland Bird Count. This event highlights perfectly how farmers balance excellent conservation work on farms across the country alongside producing the nation’s food. “Over the past four decades, farmers have carried out a huge amount of work to encourage wildlife and are responsible for protecting, maintaining and enhancing 70% of the nation’s iconic countryside. “I would encourage as 4 | AgriNews

Last-year saw a recordbreaking 1,000 people take part in the count, recording 121 species across 950,000 acres.

The most plentiful of these were fieldfares and starlings, which were seen on nearly 40% of the farms taking part. Peter Thompson, who works as a biodiversity advisor at BFBC organisers Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT), said: “Many, many farmers do lots on their farms to encourage wildlife, but when I give talks to the public, they always seem most surprised that this is the case. “The big farmland bird count gives individual farmers the chance to spend just half an hour counting birds on their farm, so that the GWCT can

shout from the roof-tops about your results.” More farmers needed However, Mr Thompson said hundreds more people should vow their support to the initiative. He added: “Last year, just over a 1,000 people took part in the count, which on the face of it looks fantastic. However, there are around 212,000 farm holdings and around 3,000 full time gamekeepers in the UK (and a similar number who do the job part time). “Therefore, less than one in every 200 (0.4%) of potential counters took part last year. Perhaps, this is why the public seem unaware of your efforts.” At the end of the count, the results will be analysed by the Trust. Dairy genomic indexes stand the test of time The study, undertaken by AHDB Dairy, included every genomic sire marketed in the UK in august 2014.

Genomic indexes were introduced for bulls marketed in the UK in 2012. At that time, the technology to calculate the indexes was still in its early stages, and producers were made aware they were more likely to change over time than indexes for proven sires which already had many daughters milking.

major new study of Holstein dairy sires has confirmed that genomic indexes are a remarkably reliable predictor of actual daughter performance. The study provides reassurance to the thousands of UK dairy producers who select service sires on the strength of an index based on their DNA. A genomic index is a genetic index which is calculated from the gene-set or genotype of a young animal, rather than from its own, its daughters’ or its parents’ and ancestors’ actual performance. In reality, the genomic component of an animal’s index is used alongside other genetic information from these alternative sources, in a smooth transition towards an index which will ultimately be based on actual or daughter performance. 6 | AgriNews

The study, undertaken by AHDB Dairy, included every genomic sire marketed in the UK in August 2014 and compared its genomic index at that time with its daughterproven index in August 2018. Some 7,745 bulls were included in the analysis which showed there was little difference between their average genomic index in 2014 and their proven index four years later. Marco Winters, head of animal genetics for AHDB Dairy says: “This study should give complete reassurance that UK genomic indexes are amongst the most stable and reliable in the world. “Provided they chose their service sires wisely, the many producers who put their faith in genomic indexes should have made substantial genetic gains in their herds.” Superior genetics

However, the attraction of using these young sires was their generally superior genetics which would help producers breed better replacement dairy heifers. Thousands of producers took this opportunity and some now breed 100 per cent of their replacements from genomic sires. Across the UK, around 70 per cent of dairy replacements are now bred from these young bulls. Mr Winters continued: “We were confident in the system when we launched genomic indexes in the UK in 2012, and this analysis confirms the reliability of the techniques we used.” Remarking that the UK teamed up with the USA, Canada and Italy to provide one of the largest reference populations in the word, he said this helped ensure the reliability of the UK indexes.

NFU Cymru uses Christmas message to highlight dangers of a ‘no deal’ Brexit

John Davies, President of NFU Cymru has used his annual speech to urge all parties and factions to come together in the best interests of the country.

It proposes a phased withdrawal of the EU's Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) to be replaced by two new schemes; an Economic Resilience Scheme and a Public Goods Scheme. The plan is to phase them in from 2020.

He calls on the Government to secure the continued free and frictionless trade that Wales' £7 billion food and drink industry needs to “continue to grow”, both in terms of value and jobs to Wales.

But Mr Davies said that a future policy must have “food production at its core”, supporting the people that “take the financial and business risks associated with producing food”.

Welsh farmers have frequently said that Brexit is the single biggest challenge facing sector within Wales.

Both NFU Cymru and the Farmers' Union of Wales (FUW) believe the proposals lack acknowledgement of the importance of food production.

For example, around a third of the Welsh lamb crop is exported and over 90% of this goes to the EU. Mr Davies said: “Whilst we continue to hope that our Government and Parliament in Westminster will be able to navigate their way to a deal with the EU that delivers our key trade asks, if that is not achievable then all other options that avoid a catastrophic no deal scenario must be actively considered. “It will be a dereliction of duty by our politicians if they simply allow the clock to run down to a

“We need a policy that will underpin the development of ‘Brand Wales’, a brand to help market and promote Wales to the world on the basis of high quality food production underpinned by a strong natural asset base,” Mr Davies said. He goes on to criticise the Welsh Government for forgetting the importance of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) to farmers. The CAP currently supports a Welsh agricultural industry that employs over 50,000 people on farms and has a gross output of nearly £1.6 billion.

“For nearly half a century the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) has provided the stability that the industry has needed to ensure a secure supply of safe, high quality, traceable and affordable food valued by the consumer,” Mr Davies explained. “It seems to me that Welsh Government, in its criticism of the CAP, forgets the importance of the CAP in underpinning the regular and affordable supply of food to the consumer. “I believe Welsh Government has overlooked this important role of the CAP and how prone food supply chains are to political instability, protectionism, trade bans and weather extremes across the globe. “The CAP has delivered, providing a level of stability to farming businesses to cope with shocks that are completely outside a farmer’s control and this in turn has ensured continuity of supply to our food processors and, ultimately, the consumer.” He added: “No farmer would say the CAP is perfect; we all accept the need for further change and evolution of policy. But what we must do is ensure that we build on the stable base that we have and design a new policy for Wales that meets our ambition for the further sustainable growth of our farming businesses, the food supply chain and our rural communities.”

Union expresses disappointment following latest dog attack on sheep

This most recent attack reinforces the need for all dog owners to ensure that their dogs are not permitted to roam freely in the countryside, the union says.

“This also includes taking the necessary steps to prevent a dogs escaping from their home.” With the Christmas holidays nearly here, many people will visit the countryside and the UFU are warning that all dogs must be kept under control. “Dog owners need to

remember that if their pet does engage in a livestock worrying incident causing harm they also tamper with a rural family’s livelihood, I would encourage all farmers to ensure that any such attacks are reported to the relevant authorities,” concluded Mr Chestnutt. The UFU have identified the need to introduce specific legislation to Northern Ireland to address such incidents, which have increased in recent times. This includes the need to engage in DNA testing of those animals suspected to have been involved in such attacks. The UFU said it will continue to work with other stakeholders with the aim of reducing incidences of livestock worrying in Northern Ireland.

This means that Müller Direct farmers who satisfy the conditions for the Müller Direct Premium 2019 will receive 28.00ppl on their qualifying litres. Farmers who opted to use a volatility busting Müller Fixed Price Contract Option introduced earlier this year will also see returns for milk supplied to the company maintained at

More than a third of the 700 Müller Direct farmers committed up to half of their milk supply to the Müller Direct Fixed Price contract option which sees this 28.00ppl milk price maintained regardless of market conditions. The move is one of a number of measures introduced by Müller to provide stability in a sector which continues to experience high levels of market volatility and unpredictability. Rob Hutchison, Milk Supply Director said: “In the current environment, characterised by

Developed by Swiss firm Zasso Group, the ‘electroherbicide’ technology, branded under the XPower name by Case IH, has been developed in response to the need to find more sustainable solutions for weed control, according to Maxime Rocaboy Product Marketing Manager at Case IH. “Digital herbicide technology is at least as efficient as chemical herbicides in terms of controlling weeds, and is more efficient, economic, practical and cropsafe than mechanical weeding, in addition to which it does not disturb the soil and encourage further weed growth,” he suggests. “At the same time, it is more practical, safer and cheaper than scorching or burning systems used for total weed or haulm control.”

How it works The XPower system essentially converts mechanical energy into electrical energy, substituting chemicals for high-energy electrons, applied through the weed leaves and working down through to the roots, explains Mr Rocaboy. The application technology itself is modular, for maximum flexibility, and can be tailored to suit specific crop geometries and needs. “Mounted on a tractor or its implement at a working width of 1.2-3.0m, its weed contact unit(s) create a high voltage. With the aid of a sensor and/or camerabased guidance system, XPower, controlled by the tractor’s Class 3 ISOBUS system, transfers this voltage via one element on contact with the weed leaves which stand proud of the crop or ground, whereupon it travels down to the roots. Another element touching another weed closes the electrical circuit and the weed chlorophyll is damaged immediately. The system is as effective on larger weeds as smaller ones.

Europe agrees new rules to protect all EU farmers from unfair trading practice

The European Parliament, Council and the Commission reached today a political agreement on a new set of rules that will ensure protection of farmers

he European Parliament, the Council and the Commission reached today a political agreement on a new set of rules that will ensure protection of 100% of EU farmers and of a very large majority of EU agri-food companies against practices contrary to good faith and fair dealing. The new European law will cover agricultural and food products traded in the food supply chain, banning for the first time up to 16 unfair trading practices imposed unilaterally by one trading partner on another. Other practices will only be permitted if subject to a clear and unambiguous upfront agreement between the parties involved. The European Commission had tabled its legislative proposal in April 2018 to ensure more fairness in the food chain and provide a minimum protection across the EU. This is the first time that EU level legislation will be implemented in this area. The new framework grants Member States the authority to enforce the new rules and impose sanctions in case of established infringements. Attending the final negotiating meeting with the European Parliament and Council representatives,

Phil Hogan, Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, said: “Today’s agreement paves the way for a first-time EU law which provides significant protection for all EU farmers, their organisations as well as small and mid-range businesses. They will now be protected against all bigger operators acting unfairly and outside the rules. I would like to express my appreciation to all the negotiators, whose constructive approach and hard work ensured today’s political agreement. I am particularly pleased that the agreement was achieved within a remarkably short eight months of the proposal’s presentation by the Commission.” The agreement reached today will apply to anyone involved in the food supply chain with a turnover of €350 million with differentiated levels of protection provided below that threshold. The new rules will cover retailers, food processors, wholesalers, cooperatives or producers’ organisations, or a single producer who would be engaging in any of the unfair trade practices identified. The unfair trading practices to be banned include: late payments for perishable food products; last minute order cancellations; unilateral

or retroactive changes to contracts; forcing the supplier to pay for wasted products and refusing written contracts. Other practices will only be permitted if subject to a clear and unambiguous upfront agreement between the parties: a buyer returning unsold food products to a supplier; a buyer charging a supplier payment to secure or maintain a supply agreement on food products; a supplier paying for a buyer’s promotion, advertising or marketing campaign. The implementation of these rules will not lead to higher prices for consumers. In the course of the public consultation conducted by the Commission before presenting the proposal, consumer organisations encouraged the regulation of these practices because of their negative effect on consumers in the longer term. An important element of the directive is that Member States can introduce a higher scope above €350 million in their national legislation or take further measures, should they so wish. The agreement also includes a review clause set at 4 years, which means that the provisions of the legislative text will have to be evaluated and possibly reviewed during the course of the next parliamentary

This could be increasing the number of domestic outlets available for farm plastic recycling or investing in cleaning facilities to improve the contamination levels of plastic. “We remain committed to engaging with the government on its strategy and we will continue to work with Defra, the Environment Agency and others in the supply chain on these issues.”

Nearly two-thirds (64%) of vets now see Brexit as more of a threat than an opportunity for the UK veterinary profession, compared to just half in autumn 2016. On animal health and welfare half of vets (51%) consider Brexit as more of a threat than an opportunity, compared to just 43% in 2016, according to findings from the BVA Voice of the Veterinary Profession survey panel. Just as in the general population, younger vets express a more pessimistic outlook on the likely impact of Brexit than older vets, but 22 | AgriNews

even amongst the older age groups, the majority now perceive Brexit as more of a threat than opportunity (54% of vets aged 55+, up from 40% in 2016). Vets working in academia and industry expressed the most concern: 69% of vets in academia and 58% of vets in industry see Brexit as more of a threat to their own area of work than an opportunity. At the other end of the spectrum are vets in Government (46% more of a threat; 17% more of an opportunity) and vets in mixed practice (49% threat; 10% opportunity). Vets are particularly worried about the impact of Brexit on veterinary recruitment with 53% of respondents

saying that the recruitment of veterinary surgeons had become harder since the EU referendum. This has risen dramatically since autumn 2016 when just 18% said the EU referendum had made recruitment of vets harder. More than eight in ten (84%) respondents agree that for the purposes of post-Brexit immigration the veterinary profession should be considered a shortage occupation. Commenting, BVA President Simon Doherty said: “As the UK Government ramps up its planning for a nodeal scenario, it’s clear that the veterinary profession is becoming increasingly concerned about the potential impact of Brexit.

Even low disease levels drag profits back and skimping on the cleaning routine between flocks is false economy, says Lancashire based cleaning specialist Steve Birchall. “There is no opportunity these days to rest buildings between flocks. Turnaround times are tight and it is, therefore, vital that buildings are not only throughly cleaned but disinfected as well, and if there has been a problem

the cleaning and disinfection treatment should take account of it” says Steve, who has been operating a nationwide poultry contract shed cleaning business for over 30 years. His three teams are equipped to carry out whatever cleaning regime producers require and he suggests a good standard routine for anyone who wants the best safeguard. After the litter has been removed, the building and any equipment either retained inside or taken out should be power washed at about 2,500 psi with a combined cleaner/ sanitizer/deodorizer, which should remove some of the 80% of micro organisms at this stage.

“Older buildings are often more difficult to clean than modern ones”, Steve says, “However, if you are going to do the job at all, then it is worth doing properly and you have to take sufficient time, particularly in breeder or laying units where nest boxes and equipment have been in place for 12 months or more. Broiler units with a six or seven day turnaround are less difficult. However, people who prefer to do what is a rather unpleasant job themselves often get rather jaded before it has been done properly. If there are other enterprises on the farm, they have to keep breaking off to do other work.

The engine braking automatically reduces the speed of the ATV when going downhill and the extra low L-gear makes it easier for the user to manoeuvre the ATV when pulling a trailer or when it is driving in deep mud. In addition, the Visco-Lok system front differential system requires no buttons to push or levers to be held in order to engage it and once the 6x6 option is selected, the system intelligently transfers power from the slipping front wheel to the opposing wheel with traction.
