Farmers urged to take part in farmland bird count Dairy genomic indexes stand test of time Union expresses sheep attack disappointment Muller confirms no change to milk price from Feb’ 19 NFU respond to Resources and Waste Strategy Vets voice growing concern over Brexit impact ATVTrac chosen by TGB as security supplier

Farmers urged to take part in Big Farmland Bird Count The results will aim to distinguish which farmland birds are thriving due to good conservation efforts.

F

armers across the country are being urged to take part in the Big Farmland Bird Count (BFBC), which is back for the sixth successive year.

many farmers as possible to participate during the event in February as this is crucial in the survival and protection of many farmland bird species,” she said.

Sponsored by the NFU, the nationwide ‘citizen science’ project calls on farmers, land managers and gamekeepers to spend 30 minutes spotting species on their patch of land from 8-17 February 2019.

‘Record-breaking’

Crucially, the results will aim to distinguish which farmland birds are thriving due to good conservation efforts while identifying the ones in need of most help. NFU President Minette Batters will be bird-spotting on the first day of the count on her Wiltshire farm.

A total of 25 red-listed species were recorded, with five appearing in the 25 most commonly seen species list. These include fieldfares, starlings, house sparrows, song thrushes and yellowhammers.

Mrs Batters said: “The NFU is extremely pleased to be sponsoring the 2019 GWCT Big Farmland Bird Count. This event highlights perfectly how farmers balance excellent conservation work on farms across the country alongside producing the nation’s food. “Over the past four decades, farmers have carried out a huge amount of work to encourage wildlife and are responsible for protecting, maintaining and enhancing 70% of the nation’s iconic countryside. “I would encourage as 4 | AgriNews

Last-year saw a recordbreaking 1,000 people take part in the count, recording 121 species across 950,000 acres.

The most plentiful of these were fieldfares and starlings, which were seen on nearly 40% of the farms taking part. Peter Thompson, who works as a biodiversity advisor at BFBC organisers Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT), said: “Many, many farmers do lots on their farms to encourage wildlife, but when I give talks to the public, they always seem most surprised that this is the case. “The big farmland bird count gives individual farmers the chance to spend just half an hour counting birds on their farm, so that the GWCT can

shout from the roof-tops about your results.” More farmers needed However, Mr Thompson said hundreds more people should vow their support to the initiative. He added: “Last year, just over a 1,000 people took part in the count, which on the face of it looks fantastic. However, there are around 212,000 farm holdings and around 3,000 full time gamekeepers in the UK (and a similar number who do the job part time). “Therefore, less than one in every 200 (0.4%) of potential counters took part last year. Perhaps, this is why the public seem unaware of your efforts.” At the end of the count, the results will be analysed by the Trust. All participants will receive a report on the national results once they have been collated. Aside from the NFU being the main sponsor, the count is also being supported by FWAG, LEAF, Kings, Perdix

Dairy genomic indexes stand the test of time The study, undertaken by AHDB Dairy, included every genomic sire marketed in the UK in august 2014.

Genomic indexes were introduced for bulls marketed in the UK in 2012. At that time, the technology to calculate the indexes was still in its early stages, and producers were made aware they were more likely to change over time than indexes for proven sires which already had many daughters milking.

A

major new study of Holstein dairy sires has confirmed that genomic indexes are a remarkably reliable predictor of actual daughter performance. The study provides reassurance to the thousands of UK dairy producers who select service sires on the strength of an index based on their DNA. A genomic index is a genetic index which is calculated from the gene-set or genotype of a young animal, rather than from its own, its daughters’ or its parents’ and ancestors’ actual performance. In reality, the genomic component of an animal’s index is used alongside other genetic information from these alternative sources, in a smooth transition towards an index which will ultimately be based on actual or daughter performance. 6 | AgriNews

The study, undertaken by AHDB Dairy, included every genomic sire marketed in the UK in August 2014 and compared its genomic index at that time with its daughterproven index in August 2018. Some 7,745 bulls were included in the analysis which showed there was little difference between their average genomic index in 2014 and their proven index four years later. Marco Winters, head of animal genetics for AHDB Dairy says: “This study should give complete reassurance that UK genomic indexes are amongst the most stable and reliable in the world. “Provided they chose their service sires wisely, the many producers who put their faith in genomic indexes should have made substantial genetic gains in their herds.” Superior genetics

However, the attraction of using these young sires was their generally superior genetics which would help producers breed better replacement dairy heifers. Thousands of producers took this opportunity and some now breed 100 per cent of their replacements from genomic sires. Across the UK, around 70 per cent of dairy replacements are now bred from these young bulls. Mr Winters continued: “We were confident in the system when we launched genomic indexes in the UK in 2012, and this analysis confirms the reliability of the techniques we used.” Remarking that the UK teamed up with the USA, Canada and Italy to provide one of the largest reference populations in the word, he said this helped ensure the reliability of the UK indexes.

A new range of Landini ‘stockman’ tractors available

generous standard specification includes an air suspension driver’s seat, cab air conditioning and a radio/ media player with Bluetooth for hands-free phone use. Front and rear windscreen wash/wipe and a push-back hydraulic pick-up hitch are also included in the package. “These new agile tractors slot into the Landini range between the 69-107hp 4 Series and the newlyintroduced 110-126hp 6-H Series,” explains Ben Agar,

sales director for Argo Tractors in the UK and Ireland. “As such, they represent a typically versatile ‘stockman’ tractor that buyers can equip to suit their particular needs for yard and field work.” Landini 5 Series tractors can be used for a wide range of field and yard applications. Standing on a 2355mm wheelbase and weighing in at 3800kg, the Landini 5 Series tractors are the latest models from Landini manufacturer Argo Tractors to take up Deutz power, with the 3.6-litre four-cylinder engine having only a maintenancefree diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) to meet latest emissions rules.

Power outputs peak at 99hp, 107hp and 113hp, with generous torque helping the tractors put in a lively performance. Having a variety of transmission options, including a choice of

mechanical shuttle with 12in dual clutch and power shuttle with wet clutch technology, makes it possible to equip the tractor ideally for different tasks, whether working predominantly on yard work with a loader or mainly engaged with field work, or a mixture of the two. As standard, the 5 Series tractors come with a 40kph Power Four synchro shuttle transmission providing 12 speeds in both directions. A creeper can be added for extra speeds or two-speed powershift with the T-Tronic version with giving 24x24 speeds, which is ideal for loader work, a creep version with 32x32 speeds is also available. With the power shuttle, the left hand fingertip control provides effort-free direction changes and a modulated clutch action that can be adjusted to deliver smooth take up of drive whatever the operating situation. It also brings smooth electrohydraulic operation of the pto wet disc clutch Finally, Eco 40kph may be chosen on powershift versions, which enables the tractor to cruise at lower engine speed for greater fuel economy. NFU Cymru uses Christmas message to highlight dangers of a ‘no deal’ Brexit

Any future policy must have ‘food production at its core’ support the people that ‘take the financial and business risks associated with producing food’

W

elsh farming is “staring into the abyss” of a 'no deal' Brexit scenario, which would see farmers locked out of their largest and closest export market, a farming leader has said in his Christmas message.

‘no deal’ Brexit.” Farmers in their thousands have made their views known on the Welsh Government’s proposals for a post-Brexit agriculture policy for Wales.

John Davies, President of NFU Cymru has used his annual speech to urge all parties and factions to come together in the best interests of the country.

It proposes a phased withdrawal of the EU's Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) to be replaced by two new schemes; an Economic Resilience Scheme and a Public Goods Scheme. The plan is to phase them in from 2020.

He calls on the Government to secure the continued free and frictionless trade that Wales' £7 billion food and drink industry needs to “continue to grow”, both in terms of value and jobs to Wales.

But Mr Davies said that a future policy must have “food production at its core”, supporting the people that “take the financial and business risks associated with producing food”.

Welsh farmers have frequently said that Brexit is the single biggest challenge facing sector within Wales.

Both NFU Cymru and the Farmers' Union of Wales (FUW) believe the proposals lack acknowledgement of the importance of food production.

For example, around a third of the Welsh lamb crop is exported and over 90% of this goes to the EU. Mr Davies said: “Whilst we continue to hope that our Government and Parliament in Westminster will be able to navigate their way to a deal with the EU that delivers our key trade asks, if that is not achievable then all other options that avoid a catastrophic no deal scenario must be actively considered. “It will be a dereliction of duty by our politicians if they simply allow the clock to run down to a

“We need a policy that will underpin the development of ‘Brand Wales’, a brand to help market and promote Wales to the world on the basis of high quality food production underpinned by a strong natural asset base,” Mr Davies said. He goes on to criticise the Welsh Government for forgetting the importance of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) to farmers. The CAP currently supports a Welsh agricultural industry that employs over 50,000 people on farms and has a gross output of nearly £1.6 billion.

“For nearly half a century the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) has provided the stability that the industry has needed to ensure a secure supply of safe, high quality, traceable and affordable food valued by the consumer,” Mr Davies explained. “It seems to me that Welsh Government, in its criticism of the CAP, forgets the importance of the CAP in underpinning the regular and affordable supply of food to the consumer. “I believe Welsh Government has overlooked this important role of the CAP and how prone food supply chains are to political instability, protectionism, trade bans and weather extremes across the globe. “The CAP has delivered, providing a level of stability to farming businesses to cope with shocks that are completely outside a farmer’s control and this in turn has ensured continuity of supply to our food processors and, ultimately, the consumer.” He added: “No farmer would say the CAP is perfect; we all accept the need for further change and evolution of policy. But what we must do is ensure that we build on the stable base that we have and design a new policy for Wales that meets our ambition for the further sustainable growth of our farming businesses, the food supply chain and our rural communities.”

Union expresses disappointment following latest dog attack on sheep

that they may now abort their lambs is a very sad reality.”

The Ulster Farmers’ Union (UFU) says that it is "disappointed" that the farming family are left with the aftermath of a dog attack shortly before Christmas.

Mr Chestnutt said: “It is a harrowing sight to see poor defenceless animals such as sheep fall victim to dogs and I again appeal to all dog owners to ensure that their pets are kept under control at all times when near livestock.

UFU Deputy President, Victor Chestnutt said: “Despite the UFU and DAERA having embarked upon an increased awareness campaign to highlight the importance of responsible dog ownership in the countryside, dogs have yet again made an attack and while this incident has seen a number of sheep killed, ten in lamb ewes have also been left traumatised. “Unfortunately the possibility 10 | AgriNews

This most recent attack reinforces the need for all dog owners to ensure that their dogs are not permitted to roam freely in the countryside, the union says.

“This also includes taking the necessary steps to prevent a dogs escaping from their home.” With the Christmas holidays nearly here, many people will visit the countryside and the UFU are warning that all dogs must be kept under control. “Dog owners need to

remember that if their pet does engage in a livestock worrying incident causing harm they also tamper with a rural family’s livelihood, I would encourage all farmers to ensure that any such attacks are reported to the relevant authorities,” concluded Mr Chestnutt. The UFU have identified the need to introduce specific legislation to Northern Ireland to address such incidents, which have increased in recent times. This includes the need to engage in DNA testing of those animals suspected to have been involved in such attacks. The UFU said it will continue to work with other stakeholders with the aim of reducing incidences of livestock worrying in Northern Ireland.

K

UHN Farm Machinery will be attending LAMMA ‘19 at the NEC in Birmingham with a wide range of machinery from its sprayer, baler, balerwrapper and feed wagon ranges, plus a selection of fertiliser spreaders, cultivation equipment and seed drills. As well as some of the Company’s well-established models and ranges, the following new machines will also be on display: MERGE MAXX 950 – bidirectional belt merger Click on thumbnail to download in high resolutionimage004.jpg Aimed at large-scale grassland operations, the MERGE MAXX 950 uses two adjustable, variable width and bidirectional merger belts to give a maximum grass pick-up width of 9.50 metres. The bi-directional design of the MERGE MAXX 950’s twin belts provides multiple windrow delivery options: forage can be delivered into a single central windrow, a single lateral windrow (left or right side), two lateral windrows (one either side) or a central and left or Southam Agricultural Fields Farm, Station Road Southam, Warwickshire CV47 2DH t: 01926 813 426 www.southamagri.co.uk

right lateral windrow. Pick-up and windrow width can be adjusted to suit the quantity and type of forage material being harvested, thus enabling the number of passes and associated costs to be reduced. For lateral windrows, the windrow width can be varied between 1.00 and 1.50m. For central windrows, the windrow can be up to 2.20m in width.

thumbnail to download in high resolutionimage007.jpg

Auto-regulating rollers at the front and side of the pick-up unit self-adjust their position according to crop thickness. These in turn pass a consistent and constant supply of forage to the merger belts, thus enabling the MERGE MAXX to produce a uniform, airy and faster-drying windrow which makes it easier for the subsequent baler or chopper to collect large volumes of grass: for forage harvesters this can equate to a 2-3km/h increase in forward operating speed.

The new MAXIMA 3 drills use an improved seed selection and ejection system which enables accurate seed placement at working speeds of up to 10km/h. Accuracy is also enhanced by a new seeding unit parallelogram which is reinforced in key areas, including at critical hinges and linkages, for added stability, robustness and longevity.

The MERGE MAXX 950 folds to 3.00m (width) by 7.40m (length) by 3.60m (height) for easy transportation between fields and is compatible for tractors with a minimum power output of 85hp. MAXIMA 3 – new generation precision seed drill Click on

Available in 6 to 12 row versions and capable of drilling crops with row spacings from 37.5 to 80cm, the new MAXIMA 3 range comprises 12 models in a choice of configurations including telescopic, trailed, foldable and telescopic with adjustable spacing.

A new coulter pressure system, capable of producing up to 180kg of downward pressure, also enhances seeding accuracy by ensuring consistent depth control. The MAXIMA 3 range also boasts an electrically driven seed metering system which allows application rates to be adjusted manually on the move or in accordance with a pre-prescribed seeding map. The electrically operated system also enables GPS or manually controlled row shutoff.

National Sprayer Testing Service Ian foreman - NSTS Manager

The NSTS have over 240 test centres around the whole of the UK able to offer at least one of the test types required to meet legislation

T

he NSTS have over 240 test centres around the whole of the UK able to offer at least one of the test types required to meet current legislation for pesticide application equipment (PAE) testing. Around 10% of these also provide fertiliser spreader testing where we have seen a steady increase in the number of tests carried out. Fertiliser input costs are on a par with pesticides and with the benefits of having a sprayer tested each year, these benefits can also be realised with spreader testing. The effects of uneven application of fertiliser are not always visible but yield variations will be at time of harvest and that loss in yield directly relates to lost input costs where the crop cannot achieve its full Bromyard Road, Ledbury, HR8 1LG t: 01531 632171 www.agrimec-ledbury.co.uk

potential. From the NSTS test, following an inspection of the machine and tray test to calculate coefficient of variation (CV) you can be confident that the spreader will give the best results possible from the products tested. Back to PAE testing; there are four different tests available to cover all different types – liquid, slug pellets, micro granules and fogging machines. Liquid covers a wide range from sprayers, weed wipers and seed treatment, through to potato application equipment, boat sprayers and train sprayers. The list is very extensive and wide ranging. Red Tractor do have different timescales for test and retest and this can also be dependent on which scheme you are in so its always worth check-

ing the protocols for confirmation. Take a look at the NSTS website www.nsts.org. uk where you can find much of this information, along with details of where to find a test centre in your area. Anyone applying professional pesticides must have their equipment tested. This includes horticulture and fruit but also sprayers working in the amenity sector. Ranging from pavements and highways, rail lines and stations, school and sports grounds and golf courses, amenity has an important role to play and it is vital in the public spaces they operate that equipment is in the best condition to apply pesticides safely and accurately.

Muller confirms no change to milk price from February 2019 The dairy giant will maintain the Muller Direct standard liter milk price unchanged for the month of February 2019

D

airy giant Müller has confirmed that its milk price will remain unchanged at 27.50p per litre for a standard litre from February 1, 2019. This means that Müller Direct farmers who satisfy the conditions for the Müller Direct Premium 2019 will receive 28.00ppl on their qualifying litres. Farmers who opted to use a volatility busting Müller Fixed Price Contract Option introduced earlier this year will also see returns for milk supplied to the company maintained at

28.00ppl. More than a third of the 700 Müller Direct farmers committed up to half of their milk supply to the Müller Direct Fixed Price contract option which sees this 28.00ppl milk price maintained regardless of market conditions. The move is one of a number of measures introduced by Müller to provide stability in a sector which continues to experience high levels of market volatility and unpredictability. Rob Hutchison, Milk Supply Director said: “In the current environment, characterised by

supply and demand changes which are affecting the value of commodities like butter and cream, we are pleased to be able to keep our standard litre milk price unchanged for the month of February. “In markets which remain hard to predict, the Müller Fixed Price Contract is showing its value. “Farmers who opted to hedge a portion of their milk supply against this contact option know that they have significant protection from this volatility,” he said. The announcement follows news of Müller decreasing its January milk price.

Bronze medal for Case IH in 2019 SIMA Innovation Awards

Novel XPower electrical weed control system wins bronze medal for Case IH in 2019 SIMA Innovation Awards.

S

ystem is part of a suite of new precision technologies from Case IH / Possibility to eliminate need for chemical application / Overcomes issues with other forms of weed control – cost, complexity, crop damage potential / Efficacy unaffected by weather A novel system which uses electrical current to control weeds and which is to be marketed as part of a suite of new Case IH precision farming technologies is the winner of a bronze medal in the Innovation Awards given by the SIMA organisers in advance of the 2019 show in Paris. Developed by Swiss firm Zasso Group, the ‘electroherbicide’ technology, branded under the XPower name by Case IH, has been developed in response to the need to find more sustainable solutions for weed control, according to Maxime Rocaboy Product Marketing Manager at Case IH. “Digital herbicide technology is at least as efficient as chemical herbicides in terms of controlling weeds, and is more efficient, economic, practical and cropsafe than mechanical weeding, in addition to which it does not disturb the soil and encourage further weed growth,” he suggests. “At the same time, it is more practical, safer and cheaper than scorching or burning systems used for total weed or haulm control.”

How it works The XPower system essentially converts mechanical energy into electrical energy, substituting chemicals for high-energy electrons, applied through the weed leaves and working down through to the roots, explains Mr Rocaboy. The application technology itself is modular, for maximum flexibility, and can be tailored to suit specific crop geometries and needs. “Mounted on a tractor or its implement at a working width of 1.2-3.0m, its weed contact unit(s) create a high voltage. With the aid of a sensor and/or camerabased guidance system, XPower, controlled by the tractor’s Class 3 ISOBUS system, transfers this voltage via one element on contact with the weed leaves which stand proud of the crop or ground, whereupon it travels down to the roots. Another element touching another weed closes the electrical circuit and the weed chlorophyll is damaged immediately. The system is as effective on larger weeds as smaller ones.

reduction that is occurring in the number of available herbicides, and the lack of new ones coming through. And in addition, there are no concerns over compatibility with the crop concerned – providing the system can treat weeds growing above the crop, they will be controlled.” The dwindling number of chemical herbicides and low number of new products coming through is playing a large part in the growing problem of weed resistance to herbicide active ingredients, points out Mr Rocaboy, and balancing resistance management with the need for effective control is an ongoing challenge. “Using the electrical weed control, on its own or in conjunction with chemical and/ or mechanical weed control, overcomes many of these issues in an economic manner and without requiring long approval procedures. Units can be adapted for different row crop systems, and can be controlled via ISOBUS Class 3 compatible tractors.”

“The exact weed species is irrelevant, and there is no risk of Aside from control of weeds subsequent weather changes such as tall grass species in field impacting on the efficacy of crops, and treatment of weeds a pass with the system or, in with complex root systems such the longer term, of herbicide as couch, where soil disturbance resistance developing. Europe agrees new rules to protect all EU farmers from unfair trading practice

The European Parliament, Council and the Commission reached today a political agreement on a new set of rules that will ensure protection of farmers

T

he European Parliament, the Council and the Commission reached today a political agreement on a new set of rules that will ensure protection of 100% of EU farmers and of a very large majority of EU agri-food companies against practices contrary to good faith and fair dealing. The new European law will cover agricultural and food products traded in the food supply chain, banning for the first time up to 16 unfair trading practices imposed unilaterally by one trading partner on another. Other practices will only be permitted if subject to a clear and unambiguous upfront agreement between the parties involved. The European Commission had tabled its legislative proposal in April 2018 to ensure more fairness in the food chain and provide a minimum protection across the EU. This is the first time that EU level legislation will be implemented in this area. The new framework grants Member States the authority to enforce the new rules and impose sanctions in case of established infringements. Attending the final negotiating meeting with the European Parliament and Council representatives,

20 | AgriNews

Phil Hogan, Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, said: “Today’s agreement paves the way for a first-time EU law which provides significant protection for all EU farmers, their organisations as well as small and mid-range businesses. They will now be protected against all bigger operators acting unfairly and outside the rules. I would like to express my appreciation to all the negotiators, whose constructive approach and hard work ensured today’s political agreement. I am particularly pleased that the agreement was achieved within a remarkably short eight months of the proposal’s presentation by the Commission.” The agreement reached today will apply to anyone involved in the food supply chain with a turnover of €350 million with differentiated levels of protection provided below that threshold. The new rules will cover retailers, food processors, wholesalers, cooperatives or producers’ organisations, or a single producer who would be engaging in any of the unfair trade practices identified. The unfair trading practices to be banned include: late payments for perishable food products; last minute order cancellations; unilateral

or retroactive changes to contracts; forcing the supplier to pay for wasted products and refusing written contracts. Other practices will only be permitted if subject to a clear and unambiguous upfront agreement between the parties: a buyer returning unsold food products to a supplier; a buyer charging a supplier payment to secure or maintain a supply agreement on food products; a supplier paying for a buyer’s promotion, advertising or marketing campaign. The implementation of these rules will not lead to higher prices for consumers. In the course of the public consultation conducted by the Commission before presenting the proposal, consumer organisations encouraged the regulation of these practices because of their negative effect on consumers in the longer term. An important element of the directive is that Member States can introduce a higher scope above €350 million in their national legislation or take further measures, should they so wish. The agreement also includes a review clause set at 4 years, which means that the provisions of the legislative text will have to be evaluated and possibly reviewed during the course of the next parliamentary

NFU responds to Government’s Resources and Waste Strategy

Responding to the publication of the Government’s Resources and Waste Strategy, in which the government laid out plans specifications, which can see perfectly good food go to waste. “Data will play an important part in helping to reduce waste but we have concerns that the powers in the Agriculture Bill are too wide and without proper explanation of what this data will be used for.

R

esponding to the publication of the Government’s Resources and Waste Strategy, in which the government has laid out plans to make manufacturers pay for the recycling or disposal of all packaging, NFU Vice President Stuart Roberts said: “It is encouraging to see the strategy reiterate that the Government is seeking powers in the Agriculture Bill to protect farmers and growers from exposure to unfair trading practices, such as late changes to product

“Another major issue is largescale, industrial fly-tipping. The NFU has been calling for a targeted approach to tackling waste crime and the introduction of a Joint Unit for Waste Crime is welcome news. It is imperative that farmers are involved during the development of this unit to ensure it is fit for purpose. “If the Government is to tackle waste crime, there need to be effective deterrents and we support the strategy’s proposal to strengthen intelligence-sharing to tackle illegal activity, including tougher penalties for criminals who dump waste on farmland, blighting our countryside.

“Unfortunately, the strategy is very vague regarding agricultural plastic. While the government has committed to explore options, it is time to see solutions. This could be increasing the number of domestic outlets available for farm plastic recycling or investing in cleaning facilities to improve the contamination levels of plastic. “We remain committed to engaging with the government on its strategy and we will continue to work with Defra, the Environment Agency and others in the supply chain on these issues.”

Vets voice growing concern over Brexit impact on workforce and welfare Vets’ views on Brexit are becoming increasingly negative, according to new BVA figures.

V

ets’ views on Brexit are becoming increasingly negative, according to new BVA figures. Nearly two-thirds (64%) of vets now see Brexit as more of a threat than an opportunity for the UK veterinary profession, compared to just half in autumn 2016. On animal health and welfare half of vets (51%) consider Brexit as more of a threat than an opportunity, compared to just 43% in 2016, according to findings from the BVA Voice of the Veterinary Profession survey panel. Just as in the general population, younger vets express a more pessimistic outlook on the likely impact of Brexit than older vets, but 22 | AgriNews

even amongst the older age groups, the majority now perceive Brexit as more of a threat than opportunity (54% of vets aged 55+, up from 40% in 2016). Vets working in academia and industry expressed the most concern: 69% of vets in academia and 58% of vets in industry see Brexit as more of a threat to their own area of work than an opportunity. At the other end of the spectrum are vets in Government (46% more of a threat; 17% more of an opportunity) and vets in mixed practice (49% threat; 10% opportunity). Vets are particularly worried about the impact of Brexit on veterinary recruitment with 53% of respondents

saying that the recruitment of veterinary surgeons had become harder since the EU referendum. This has risen dramatically since autumn 2016 when just 18% said the EU referendum had made recruitment of vets harder. More than eight in ten (84%) respondents agree that for the purposes of post-Brexit immigration the veterinary profession should be considered a shortage occupation. Commenting, BVA President Simon Doherty said: “As the UK Government ramps up its planning for a nodeal scenario, it’s clear that the veterinary profession is becoming increasingly concerned about the potential impact of Brexit.

Effective Poultry House Cleaning Steve Birchall Poultry House Cleaning Services High pressure powerwashing, disinfectant and cleaners With the poultry industry experiencing more than its fair share of problems over the past 12 months or so no poultry producer can afford to hinder flock performance by allowing a build up of micro organisms. Even low disease levels drag profits back and skimping on the cleaning routine between flocks is false economy, says Lancashire based cleaning specialist Steve Birchall. “There is no opportunity these days to rest buildings between flocks. Turnaround times are tight and it is, therefore, vital that buildings are not only throughly cleaned but disinfected as well, and if there has been a problem

the cleaning and disinfection treatment should take account of it” says Steve, who has been operating a nationwide poultry contract shed cleaning business for over 30 years. His three teams are equipped to carry out whatever cleaning regime producers require and he suggests a good standard routine for anyone who wants the best safeguard. After the litter has been removed, the building and any equipment either retained inside or taken out should be power washed at about 2,500 psi with a combined cleaner/ sanitizer/deodorizer, which should remove some of the 80% of micro organisms at this stage.

“Older buildings are often more difficult to clean than modern ones”, Steve says, “However, if you are going to do the job at all, then it is worth doing properly and you have to take sufficient time, particularly in breeder or laying units where nest boxes and equipment have been in place for 12 months or more. Broiler units with a six or seven day turnaround are less difficult. However, people who prefer to do what is a rather unpleasant job themselves often get rather jaded before it has been done properly. If there are other enterprises on the farm, they have to keep breaking off to do other work.

ATVTrac chosen by TGB as official security supplier ATVTrac is delighted to agree terms with expanding ATV and offroad vehicle brand, TGB, receiving endorsement for its renowned tracking device, now available for fitment across the entire TGB range. Successfully proven in the motorcycle market, where theft is an ever increasing problem for owners, the same team turned their attention to the ATV and powersports market in 2012, bringing functions to the industry that were not previously available, setting the benchmark in the process. ATVTrac’s Rupert Archer Smith commented, “We are delighted to agree terms with TGB and very pleased to see them taking security so seriously. On top of the security element, we’ve worked hard to make ATVTrac a truly useful asset, enabling single users and large estate operators to make use of its additional functions too.” As well as Thatcham approved security that protects owner’s machines via GPS, GPRS and RF technology, ATVTrac utilises the same technology to keep workers and riders safe too, with handy functions like ATV Over, that can text or email a colleague or loved one,

should the ATV topple over with the ignition turned on. ATVTrac’s onboard technology is backed up by a Secure Operating Centre (SOC), who monitor movements 24/7, seven days a week, liaising with owners and police should a theft occur. TGB UK representative, Henry Maplethorpe, added, “Theft is an ever present threat for customers and so we were keen to offer a trusted solution. While there are many types of security product on the market, we believe that tracking is really the only effective solution. Having seen both the functionality and success of ATVTrac, with their wide-ranging experience in other sectors, we were delighted to agree terms with them.” ATVTrac has a recommended retail price of £332.50 + VAT, with the first year’s subscription included. Subsequent year subscription costs are £8.33+VAT per month via direct debit or as follows: 1 year – £82.50, 2 year – £149.17, 3 – year £190.83. ATVTrac has no other hidden costs, all text notifications and emails are included in the subscription cost. For further information please visit www.atvtrac. co.uk

Key features Stealth Installation All authorised ATVTrac dealers are trained to ensure that your unit is installed in the most covert location possible, giving the best levels of protection and adhering to Thatcham’s high security standards - it's essential.

Self Maintaining ATVTrac has its own internal battery, so it doesn’t rely solely on the machine’s own battery for power. If it detects a drop in the machine’s voltage, you’ll receive a helpful text to tell you so. The internal battery lasts for up to 30 days.

24-7 Operations Center Our secure operating centre doesn’t sleep, so you’re protected 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If the unthinkable happens, our team contact you via text, phone and email and then liaise directly with the authorities to pinpoint your machine.

Real-time Monitoring Once you’ve registered your ATVTrac unit you have total control, 24/7. Edit your details, add co-workers for notifications and even select the voltage threshold for receiving low battery notifications. Sending a lone-worker out on a remote job? Keep an eye on their location for peace of mind or send your nearest machine to the next job by monitoring more than one tracked machine on the app.

Six reasons to come and see the newest addition to the Can-Am off-road line up BRP will be highlighting power, performance, comfort, capability, versatility and innovation at Lamma 2019 with an exclusive debut

B

RP (Bombardier Recreational Products) will be highlighting power, performance, comfort, capability, versatility and innovation at LAMMA 2019 with the exclusive UK debut of the Can-Am Outlander 6x6 450 T, the latest addition to Can-Am off-road’s 2019 utility vehicle portfolio. The 2019 Can-Am Outlander 6x6 450 T has been designed and developed to enable users to be more efficient when doing the toughest jobs on the farm and have the ability to handle the constantly changing terrains out in the field with ease. The new Can-Am Outlander 6x6 450 T is powered by the reliable 38 hp singlecylinder, liquid-cooled Rotax 450 engine and comes with industry-leading towing capacity (1,650 lb/750 kg), front and rear racks with cargo extenders, and LinQ accessory attachment points. Its Continuously

32 | AgriNews

Variable Transmission (CVT) is calibrated to ensure that it always delivers the optimal torque output, no matter where it is or what it is being used for. The engine braking automatically reduces the speed of the ATV when going downhill and the extra low L-gear makes it easier for the user to manoeuvre the ATV when pulling a trailer or when it is driving in deep mud. In addition, the Visco-Lok system front differential system requires no buttons to push or levers to be held in order to engage it and once the 6x6 option is selected, the system intelligently transfers power from the slipping front wheel to the opposing wheel with traction. The Can-Am Outlander 6x6 450 T will be centre piece of Can-Am’s workhorse agricultural all terrain (ATV) and side by side vehicles (SSV) on display. Other models will include the CanAm Outlander 450, 570 PRO and 570 DPS ABS, and a

selection of vehicles from the tough, capable and clever Can-Am Traxter range. James Dalke, BRP commercial manager UK and Ireland, says, “LAMMA is a key event for us as it attracts a wideranging group of utility users to whom we can introduce the breadth of the off-road lineup and showcase how these vehicles can assist them in their day-to-day work. It also provides us with the perfect platform from which we can highlight how we see ATVs and SSVs evolving and the ways in which our R&D team is working to meet the demands of the UK utility market. This is highlighted by the fact that on our stand this year we will be giving visitors their first look at the new Outlander 6x6 450 T, an exciting addition to our offroad portfolio that we believe will enable us to increase our overall market share.” For more information visit www.brp.com and www. lammashow.com
