Outlook strong as JCB employess get New Year payrise of 3.9%
JCB shop floor employees have returned to work to a New Year pay rise of 3.9% and order books at their strongest in the company’s history
The 2018 increase, which is linked to November 2017’s Retail Price Index (RPI), is part of a three year wage deal and took effect from January 1st. It follows a £500 Christmas bonus paid to all of JCB’s 5,500 UK employees. Over the past 12 months JCB has recruited more than 1,200 people at its 11 UK factories in Staffordshire, Derbyshire and Wales and handed permanent contracts to 150 agency employees – with more to follow this year. In addition, JCB has increased its purchasing spend globally to more than £2 billion a year and in the past 12 months spending with the company’s 2,500 UK suppliers has risen by 13% compared to 2016. This came as the company 4 | AgriNews | January 2018
launched 46 new products. JCB has this week gone into production with a new and innovative range of site dumpers at its World HQ in Staffordshire in a move which will create around 70 new jobs over the next 12 months. JCB Chairman Lord Bamford said today: “The industry in which we operate is doing very well at the moment, which is not only good news for JCB, it’s good news for our region and good news for Britain. “Our spending with UK suppliers has increased substantially over the past year and we are already off to a very strong start in 2018 with a very healthy order bank in place. In my view there is every reason to be optimistic about the
future and in particular the future of the British economy. “With unemployment at its lowest level for more than 40 years, we face some challenges with recruitment but that is a great challenge to have to overcome and a very positive position for the UK to find itself in.” The pay increase follows acceptance in 2016 by GMB members of a three year deal. It affects around 3,200 shop floor employees at JCB’s Staffordshire plants in Rocester, Uttoxeter, Cheadle, Rugeley and its factories in Wrexham and Foston, Derbyshire. Chief Executive Officer Graeme Macdonald said: “The long-term pay deal agreed last year gave us the stability we needed to plan and has delivered a robust pay rise for JCB’s shop floor employees. The outlook for 2018 is positive with markets all over the world in exceptionally good shape.” GMB Works Convenor Gordon Richardson said: “2017 was a good year for the company which has generated more job security for GMB members and we welcome the pay rise which was agreed as part of the three year deal.”

Film binding baler wrapper wins Machine of the Year award
Kuhn Farm MAchinery announce that its FBP 3135 Bale Pack Baler Wrapper wins DLV Machine of the Year 2018 at Agritechnica 2017
KUHN Farm Machinery is extremely proud to announce that its FBP 3135 Bale Pack baler wrapper combination has been announced as the DLV Machine of the Year 2018 in the forage harvesting category at this year’s AgriTechnica exhibition. Facing stiff competition from a range of rival machines, the FBP 3135 was selected as the category winner (by a jury consisting of 30 journalists from 18 countries) thanks to its use of KUHN’s unique and patented film binding system which helps to achieve the best silage quality at the Craggs of Conder Green

lowest costs. As well as improved silage preservation, KUHN’s film binding system also enables easier bale handling and plastic recycling. The KUHN system works with two standard 750mm stretch film rolls therefore eliminating the need to order separate binding and wrapping film. The KUHN system also reduces film usage and cost by up to 30% by prestretching film by 70% prior to application and boasts quicker and easier roll loading thanks to a user-friendly system. Loading film rolls is
also easier as each roll weighs just 27kg, compared to wide mantle film rolls which can weigh as much as 40-90kg. The FBP 3135 Bale Pack can also be used with conventional net binding: switching between film and net binding is quick and simple as the two systems are separate and binding material doesn’t need to be swapped for different crops. In either specification, the FBP delivers high output productivity in conjunction with consistent bale formation and a reliable intelligent wrapping mechanism with 3D wrapping capability.

All new Landini Rex 4 series tractors at the Lamma show in January
The all-new Landini Rex 3 Series tractors will make their UK farming debut at the Lamma show in January, representing a new range The all-new Landini Rex 4 Series tractors will make their UK farming debut at the LAMMA show in January, representing a new range of compact but powerful and durable power units suited to applications where space is limited. The 95hp Rex 4-100 F will be on display from a line-up spanning 69-111hp and available in different configurations to suit a number of applications. The ‘F’ version, for example, can be configured to no more than 1.3m wide so it has potential as a heavyduty yard and cubicle house scraping tractor, while the ultra-narrow version that can be set up barely 1m wide is designed primarily for vineyard work. There are seven power outputs altogether and the new transmissions available provide a threespeed powershift option for the first time, enabling operators to quickly change ground speed when towing or working soil-engaging implements without losing momentum. Test your plough skills at Lamma January 17th & 18th 2018
How effective is your ploughing? That’s the question being posed by ProCam on it’s stand at Lamma How effective is your ploughing? That’s the question being posed by ProCam on it’s stand at LAMMA 2018, where an implement will be used by the company’s agronomists to demonstrate correct set-up and technique to achieve the most effective results. “The plough remains the best tool for resolving common compaction issues and should therefore be a valuable part of many rotational arable farming approaches, particularly in helping to control resistant grass weeds,” says ProCam agronomist Kevin Pearcy. “Unfortunately, a range of factors in modern arable farming mean that the basic skills and understanding in relation to ploughing are being lost. Issues such as the increased width of tyres, the overall size of machinery or simply the fact that ploughing is no longer an annual event on many farms means that the job is not always being done right. “At ProCam we are putting a focus back on the practice of effective ploughing, where it is a considered option, to help farmers use a valuable tool as effectively as possible.” In addition to a handson opportunity to test your plough set-up skills, ProCam will be running a competition on ploughing knowledge on their LAMMA stand, with an iPad on offer to the winner.

The National Sprayer Testing Scheme Ian Foreman - NSTS manager Testing of pesticide application equipment and fertiliser spreaders Ian Foreman Since 26th November 2016 it became a legal requirement for all pesticide application equipment to be tested and the delegated body in the UK is the National Sprayer Testing Scheme (NSTS As well as the larger crop sprayers the obligation includes granular applicators and slug pellet applicators, but also includes weed wipers, seed treatment equipment and boom sprayers 3 metres or less to name a few. The requirement does not only apply to machines working in the agricultural sector but now includes horticulture and amenity, so the sprayers we see working on golf courses or in streets and parks all now must be tested. Sprayers are tested to the European standard EN 16122, Andrew Lovegreen
introduced by us in February last year and now includes some additional checks, including the electronic controller where fitted. Crop Assurance still require an annual test for boom sprayers over 3 metres wide, along with fogging machines and granular applicators applying nematicides, but all other equipment is on a less frequent timescale and these can be checked on the NSTS website www.nsts.org.uk From September 2015 NSTS introduced a national scheme for testing fertiliser spreaders. Although not a legal requirement spreaders require a calibration certificate for Crop Assurance purposes and the ideal way to achieve this would be to have it NSTS tested. As well as checking the condition
of the machine, a tray test will be carried out to check the spread pattern and adjustments made if required. As an expensive variable cost, fertilisers can affect crop growth dramatically, but these are not always seen visually. A coefficient of variation (CofV) over 10% will influence yield and potentially quality and this effect could be reduced by having your machine tested. Machine examiners aim to achieve a CofV below 10% for all fertilisers tested through your spreader and it is recommended to have all products tested, or at least the nitrogen or nitrogen/ sulphur products. There are over 240 test centres around the UK and 690 examiners providing sprayer testing. Over 100

New 5 Series tractors from John Deere
John Deere has announced a number of improvements to its lower horsepower 5M and 5E series tractors up to 115hp John Deere has announced a number of improvements to its lower horsepower 5M and 5E Series tractors up to 115hp, which are suitable for arable, livestock and mixed farms as well as specialist growers. The company has also extended the 5E range with the introduction of the new 49hp 5050E, John Deere’s smallest agricultural tractor. Models from both ranges will be featured on the John Deere stand (G19) at LAMMA ’18. John Deere’s 5M Series is Europe’s bestselling tractor range. Following the success of its predecessors, the new model line-up for 2018 has been designed to further increase operator comfort and overall performance, while remaining versatile and easy to use. The new 5090M replaces the 5085M in this four-model range, which also includes the 5075M, 5100M and 5115M. All are equipped with Stage IIIB compliant John Deere PowerTech PWX engines – a 2.9-litre three-cylinder unit on the 5075M, and a 4.5-litre four-cylinder unit on the three bigger models. To meet current emission standards these use the same common rail technology featured in John Deere’s larger tractors, combined with the company’s well established diesel-only design. Shepherds missing a stress-free profit opportunity
One in five sheep producers are still cross-fostering third lambs onto singlebering ewes One in five sheep producers are still cross-fostering third lambs onto single-bearing ewes and about 30% are continuing to bottle-feed orphans despite the significant extra labour input required to carry out both these traditional rearing practices. That’s the feedback from just under 350 (346) sheep farms responding to a November 2017 online survey carried out by Volac Lamlac, which suggests only half the GB market is taking advantage of modern feeding and rearing technology to boost animal performance and make their life easier. The research gives an interesting insight into current surplus lamb rearing practices. Not surprisingly, the lambs being reared artificially are those from triplet-bearing ewes in the main, together with any orphans. Just
under 80% of farmers say that if a ewe has had triplets one lamb would be removed and reared artificially. “Interestingly, though, only one in three farmers choose the odd one out in a group of three, which is what we would recommend,” commented Abi Erian from Volac. “It’s always best to leave a balanced pair of lambs on the mother. Everyone else is employing a mix of criteria to make the choice.” Surplus lambs can now be reared very efficiently artificially and without the problems associated with fostering onto an unwilling single-bearing ewe using its amniotic fluid. “With good husbandry, organisation and the right milk replacer there’s no doubt you can produce good quality lambs, as well as save hours of effort
and hassle,” Ms Erian said. Depending on the number of surplus lambs on a sheep unit, newborns can be easily fed warm milk via good value teated bucket feeders or reared automatically by a more sophisticated computerised feeder, which dramatically cuts the time spent mixing milk and feeding lambs. Milk is consumed little and often, which means faster growth rates and less risk of digestive upsets. “Provided you maintain good levels of hygiene and offer fresh water alongside creep feed, you can be confident in machinesupported rearing of those extra lambs. It’s also highly costeffective with margins of £15-£25 a lamb being achievable (over lifetime feed cost), based on previous years’ lamb prices,” said Ms Erian.

Effective Poultry House Cleaning Steve Birchall Poultry House Cleaning Services High pressure powerwashing, disinfectant and cleaners With the poultry industry experiencing more than its fair share of problems over the past 12 months or so no poultry producer can afford to hinder flock performance by allowing a build up of micro organisms. Even low disease levels drag profits back and skimping on the cleaning routine between flocks is false economy, says Lancashire based cleaning specialist Steve Birchall. “There is no opportunity these days to rest buildings between flocks. Turnaround times are tight and it is, therefore, vital that buildings are not only throughly cleaned but disinfected as well, and if there has been a problem
the cleaning and disinfection treatment should take account of it” says Steve, who has been operating a nationwide poultry contract shed cleaning business for over 30 years. His three teams are equipped to carry out whatever cleaning regime producers require and he suggests a good standard routine for anyone who wants the best safeguard. After the litter has been removed, the building and any equipment either retained inside or taken out should be power washed at about 2,500 psi with a combined cleaner/ sanitizer/deodorizer, which should remove some of the 80% of micro organisms at this stage.

“Older buildings are often more difficult to clean than modern ones”, Steve says, “However, if you are going to do the job at all, then it is worth doing properly and you have to take sufficient time, particularly in breeder or laying units where nest boxes and equipment have been in place for 12 months or more. Broiler units with a six or seven day turnaround are less difficult. However, people who prefer to do what is a rather unpleasant job themselves often get rather jaded before it has been done properly. If there are other enterprises on the farm, they have to keep breaking off to do other work.
Introducing the National Egg and Poultry Awards
The hunt has begun for the brightest and best in the industry, following the launch of the inaugural National Egg & Poultry Awards The hunt has begun for the brightest and best in the industry, following the launch of the inaugural National Egg & Poultry Awards. A new awards scheme for 2018, and backed by the British Poultry Council (BPC) and British Egg Industry Council, the Awards will honour and reflect achievement, excellence and best practice in the sector; while also promoting the egg and poultry industry as a career choice and providing a networking opportunity for the sector to come together. A judging panel comprised of a team of highly respected industry figures will assess entrants against a rigorous criteria across 12 categories. With significant prize money on offer, the winners will be named at a glittering ceremony at London’s prestigious Royal Garden Hotel on Tuesday, June 26. Winners will also be featured in extensive coverage of the event and post-awards interviews at www. poultrynews. co.uk and in Poultry Business. Simon Lewis, Poultry Business publisher, said: “We are delighted to launch the first National Egg & Poultry Awards. “There are numerous challenges facing the industry, from post-Brexit labour shortages, to antibiotic reduction targets and the risks posed by avian influenza. Yet,
there are some wonderful achievements and successes achieved by producers and processors. “These awards are an opportunity to recognise and honour those who are pushing the industry to new heights.” BPC chairman Richard Griffiths added: “We need to champion British food, and it’s important that we acknowledge the talent, skills, and downright hard work it takes to feed the nation. We have fantastic people and great companies in our industry and these awards give them the chance to be recognised for the brilliant job they do.” The National Egg & Poultry Awards 2018 will take place on Tuesday June 26, at the Royal Garden Hotel, London. The event will comprise a three-course gala dinner at the Royal Garden Hotel, with pre-dinner drinks and table wine. There will be a full awards presentation with a celebrity host, to be announced.

New Polaris Ranger XP 1000 EPS arrives in dealers
Brand new Ranger XP 1000 is making its debut in dealerships from December, with the first units already starting to arrive
The brand-new RANGER XP 1000 will make its debut in dealerships in December, with the first units starting to arrive later this month. Polaris recently celebrated rolling the one-millionth RANGER machine off the production line – 2018 will mark two decades since the utility vehicle was introduced to the side-by-side line-up. More rugged. More refined. More Ranger. Developed with over one hundred-user inspired improvements, the all-new RANGER XP 1000 sets a new standard for what a utility side-by-side can do. The model boasts class leading power (82hp) and
torque (61lb-ft), industry-leading towing (over 1100g) and ground clearance (330mm) – making it the hardest working, smoothest riding SXS built. Featuring the proven ProStar 1000 Twin Cylinder engine, the RANGER XP 1000 features a new one-piece frame providing improved chassis stiffness and automotive levels of refinement with a redesigned interior to provide more storage and capability. The RANGER also has a tighter turning radius and more precise steering. Bold and aggressive new styling on the outside, developments continue on the inside of the cab too. Dual-Sweep analogue dials and a 4” LCD Rider Information Center provide comprehensive
information to the driver, while thicker seat foam provides better comfort. Practicality is boosted too with 51 litres of secure in-cab storage including a flip-up passenger seat and double glove box. Rene Basei, Polaris EMEA Vice President, commented, “Polaris is constantly innovating and looking for ways to improve customer experience. A big part of the development process comes from listening to and integrating customer feedback into new products – the new RANGER XP 1000 is a fantastic example of this. Feedback from those who have tested it have been extremely positive and we’re sure our customers are going to think the same.”

Honda’s Pioneer utility vehicle get even more capable
Following its entry into the UK’s market with the introduction of the Pioneer 700 earlier this year Following its entry into the UK’s fast-growing side-by-side utility vehicle market with the introduction of the Pioneer 700 earlier this year, Honda (UK) has launched a range of genuine built-for-purpose accessories to make this versatile workhorse even more comfortable, capable and durable. Already a popular fixture in utility markets including agriculture, equestrian, gamekeeping, groundskeeping and forestry, the go-anywhere Pioneer is designed to work for extended periods in some of the most demanding conditions, making operator and passenger comfort vital. In the genuine Honda range, front screen options include a half-height wind deflector, full glass or two-piece folding polycarbonate windscreen, and canopies offering protection from the elements and overhanging branches. Cab options start at fabric and hard roofs with optional rear panels, up to a full cab with full height doors, enclosed rear panel, electric wiper and washer, and a heater drawing on heat from the engine’s liquid cooling system. Additional comfort add-ons include fabric extensions for the standard half-doors and the option of full height doors with glass side panels for the front. Further additions to the new accessories range buildon the already impressive versatility of the Pioneer with its industry-exclusive QuickFlip®

seating system on the fourseater variant – allowing easy switching between one or two rear passengers or a full cargo bed. The rear seats flip down to create a completely flat load bed, then pop back up in an instant when required. Load area can now be increased with the option of a bed extender, particularly useful when in four-seater mode, with a poly bed liner an option for both two and four seat variants. An easy-fit slide-in drawbar and 50mm tow-ball aim to further capitalise on the Pioneer’s powerful 675cc petrol engine and torque converter drive, which offers an impressive 680kg towing capacity, strong enough to handle some jobs traditionally reserved for a tractor. The new accessories range also extends to furthering Honda’s trademark durability, with bolt-on guards providing extra machine protection for the toughest operating conditions, and durable covers keeping the machine clean and dry when not in use. Added protection from rocks and tree stumps is offered by a rugged skid plate, with aluminum guards also available to further protect the front and rear suspension. Front and rear bumpers work to protect bodywork from bumps and scrapes, while easy-remove durable rubber mats protect the floor and make it easy to wash. Aluminium wheels are also an optional upgrade on
the standard steel rims, for added aesthetic appeal. Steve Morris, Head of Honda (UK) Power Products comments: “The Pioneer has been incredibly well received since its introduction to the UK market earlier this year, setting a new benchmark for side-by-sides and taking us into several new markets where the customer’s need is more suited to a side-by-side than an ATV. As such the Pioneer is being used for a huge range of jobs in varied and demanding conditions, exactly what it was built to do, so we are pleased to offer these new accessories allowing owners to further tailor their machine to their own usage and get even more from their investment.” Introduced to the UK market in January 2017 and developed from the ground up as a pure utility vehicle, the all-new Pioneer is available as a twoseater (700-2) or flexible
four-seater (700-4), built around the powerful and efficient 675-cc fuel-injected, liquid-cooled engine and transmission seen on Honda’s range-topping TRX680 ATV. A three-speed automatic transmission ensures true and reassuring engine braking across even the most demanding terrain, while fully-independent double wishbone front and rear suspension deliver superior handling, smooth riding and all-day comfort.

Isuzu D-Max triumphs in the What Van? 2018 awards
The new generation Isuzu D-Max has been awarded What Van? Pick-up of The Year for 2018 with the title praising its substance and style
The new generation Isuzu D-Max has been awarded What Van? Pick-Up of The Year for 2018 with the title praising both its substance and style. Launched in 2017, the Isuzu D-Max emerged victorious, beating strong competition from rivals in a highly contested sector. Judges were impressed by the economy and refinement of the new 164 PS turbo diesel engine, a step up from the previous model that improves performance and builds upon the Isuzu D-Max’s workhorse character. Retaining the 3.5 tonne towing capacity and over 1 tonne payload, the new generation Isuzu D-Max was praised for providing a quieter, more economical 41 | AgriNews | January 2018
driving experience. The new 1.9L turbo engine also meets Euro 6 standards without the need for the addition of AdBlue, unlike most of the Isuzu D-Max’s competitors. The breadth of the Isuzu D-Max range also impressed judges; with single, extended and double-cab formats available, as well as a wide choice of trim levels. Coupled with the attractive five-year/125,000-mile warranty package and five years’ roadside assistance (in the UK & Europe), the D-MAX proved it was truly built for the professionals who use it. What Van? Editor and Judge James Dallas said of the win: “Looking for a no-nonsense workhorse that is at home on a farm or building site, yet is not short
of creature comforts? Then look no further.” “Isuzu's rugged and recently-revised D-Max 1.0-tonne payload pick-up matches that description nicely and is a worthy winner of our Pick-up of the Year award for 2018.” “It is without doubt an exemplary package that is well worth investigating.” Isuzu UK Managing Director William Brown commented: “The award for the new generation Isuzu D-Max is a testimony to the great product which our customers already love and trust. “Isuzu is proud to make reliable and quality vehicles for the professionals that need them and this award highlights the Isuzu truly is a step above the rest.”
