The jubilee edition also marks ten years’ production of the Puma line, the St. Valentin, Austrian-built seven-model range which spans from 150 to 240hp. Jerome Increase Case founded his eponymous farm equipment business in 1842, in the US town of Racine, Wisconsin, where the worldwide headquarters
of the Case IH agricultural business remain today. In 1869, Case manufactured the first steam-engined tractor designed to power stationary implements, and seven years later built the first selfpropelled traction steam engine. As steam power began to supersede horses for operating threshing machines, the JI Case Threshing Machine Company became the world’s largest producer of steam engines by 1886.

Great Yorkshire Show gets ready to roll ............................................................... Catwalk queens met Charolais cattle, rare tractors rolled into town and a leading sculptor put the finishing touches to her life-size horse…. it can only mean one thing! The Great Yorkshire Show is set to get under way tomorrow as the showground prepares to welcome more than 130,000 visitors over the next three days.
Director Charles Mills took a trip into the past when he got behind the wheel of a 100-year-old Ford Ministry of Munitions tractor. Members of the West Yorkshire Vintage Tractor and Engine Club are behind the display which celebrates the Ford and Fordson Association’s 100th anniversary. Whitby sculptor Emma Stothard has put the finishing touches to her 17-hand “Golden Horse” which will grace the Council Lawn near the bandstand throughout the show. Emma, whose work has been commissioned for the Prince of Wales’ gardens at Highgrove House as well as the windows of Fortnum and Mason in London, is exhibiting at the show for the first time. She has spent countless hours creating the golden horse 14 | July 2017
from more than 200 kilos of drawn phosphor copper wire, designed to glint in the sunshine.
Two very different kinds of beauty were introduced to each other when catwalk models met the blonde stars of a Charolais cow and her calf, whose own catwalk will be the Beef showing rings. The breed’s National Show is being hosted by the Great Yorkshire Show for the first time. Entries are at a record high and competition for the championship ribbons is expected to be keen. Meanwhile over at the fashion pavilion, models will take to the GYS Catwalk four times a day showcasing designs from students from Harrogate College, Hull School of Art and Design and Huddersfield University as well as James Steward, John Lewis and Brook Taverner who are behind Yorkshire Agricultural Society Tweed. A host of stars will be taking to the catwalk this year in a
one-off celebrity special at 2:30pm on the Tuesday. All the action from the Fashion Pavilion will be on Twitter, join in the conversation using #GYScatwalk. Visitors to the show will be able to enjoy all things rural, with classes ranging from poultry to poleclimbing and from honey to horticulture, along with hundreds of shopping opportunities at a huge range of tradestands. Show Director Charles Mills said: “We are ready for action and looking forward to another great show and the opportunity to meet some of our visitors. ............................................................... The Michael Spink Memorial Perpetual Trophy has been launched by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society in honour of a local young farmer.
Mr Spink was a 24-year-old dairy farmer from Knaresborough who died in an accident in New Zealand in January. He was a member of Knaresborough Young Farmers who raised over £8,000 in his memory with a 120-strong tractor run in March. Knaresborough Young Farmers, Ring Steward Michael Warren and Mr Spinks’ family including parents Jane and Graham, sisters Jennifer, 26 and Rachel, 21, and younger brother Matthew, 16, were at the showground to see the new trophy ahead of the Great Yorkshire Show. The Michael Spink Memorial Perpetual Trophy will be presented by Ring Steward and family friend Michael Warren to the winner of the Ayrshire Heifer Champion on Tuesday.
Mrs Spink said: “Mike absolutely loved the Great Yorkshire Show and he would have loved to have had his name on an Ayrshire trophy. This is not the way he would have intended it, but it’s the next best thing. He loved his Ayrshire cattle, his dad had bought him some manage when he was eight and he loved them.

A stylish new appearance for the compact models in the Landini tractors range is combined with proven specifications and features to make an attractive choice of power units for all groundscare operations. The new three-model Landini 2 Series, which has replaced the well-known Mistral, sports new family-look styling for the engine hood to match the rest of the comprehensive Landini range and an allnew roof panel housing the ventilation system on the cabbed version. The new hood retains the clamshell format of the previous design, with a high-lifting upper section giving ready access to all routine service points, while detachable lower panels completely expose the engine and its ancillary equipment. Standard open platform versions of the 2 Series have been joined by the ‘GE’

model, which has a new front axle and modifications that shave 94mm off the height of the tractor. That can be significant for work amongst trees with low-hanging branches and other situations where the lower height is an advantage.
The GE and Standard versions have the same choice of 30kph 12×12 or 16×16 creeper gearboxes with synchro shuttle selection of forward and reverse. Likewise, the two-speed independent rear power take-off, which provides one setting for ‘power’ and one for ‘economy’. “With implements that don’t need a lot of power, the ‘economy’ pto gearing allows the engine to be run at a lower speed to reduce both noise output and fuel consumption,” points out Ray Spinks, sales director at Landini distributor AgriArgo UK. “A ground-drive setting relates the speed of the pto to the forward speed of the tractor, which is useful for maintaining correct application rates with sand spreaders and similar machines.”
To ensure sufficient oil flow at all times, the tractors follow the Landini philosophy of installing two pumps. In this case, a 19.7-litre/min unit is dedicated to the steering system and a 28-litre/min pump supplies the 1200kg rear implement linkage (and optional 400kg front linkage if fitted), and up to three remote services valves. Latest-specification Yanmar engines provide the power – 2.0-litre and 2.2-litre nonturbo units delivering 44hp and 47hp in the Landini 2-045 and 2-050, and a turbo version of the 2.0-litre engine generating 54hp for the 2-060 model. Thanks to a 40-litre fuel tank, these economical engines ensure the new Landini 2 Series tractors work long hours between refills as they tackle all groundscare tasks from grass aeration and mowing to sweeping and trailer work. Electro-hydraulic engagement of the rear axle differential lock for maximum traction and a generous 55deg steering lock on the front axle for maximum manoeuvrability ensure the Landini 2 Series tractors have the performance needed for all groundscare applications.

Extra wide models extend Primor feeder and blower range ............................................................... KUHN Farm Machinery has extended its range of dual-purpose trailed feeder and straw blowers with the addition of two extra-wide models. The 15m3 PRIMOR 15070 M and 4.2m3 PRIMOR 4270 M both boast extra-wide, high-capacity bodies enabling them to handle the largest of round and square bales. PRIMOR 15070 M The PRIMOR 15070 M is large enough to take up to four 1.30 x 1.20 x 2.70 metre rectangular bales or three round bales up to 2 metres in diameter. It can be customised according to the layout of farm buildings, with a side or multidirectional discharge chute (GL model variant) enabling straw to be blown to the left or right. Performance has been a key focus throughout the development of the new machine, with two powerful intake rotors feeding the full 1700mm width of the turbine’s input area. A bank of six hydraulic tines above the feed rotors enables intake settings to be adjusted and regulated according to the type of product being used and to feed the turbine with an even supply of material. The turbine itself is capable of blowing to a distance of 18 metres and is fitted with eight bolt-on blades for pneumatic
fodder separation.
The PRIMOR 15070 M uses KUHN’s hydraulic unroll system to clamp subsequent bales in place and stop them from rotating while the first bale is being discharged. It is also equipped with an hydraulic tailgate with a 1.2 tonne lifting capacity for loading round bales. The floor of the body is fitted with a 14mm diameter chain conveyor with an optional boost floor available to provide extra feed conveyor torque for the distribution of heavy products such as grass silage. In common with existing machines in the PRIMOR range, the 15070 M uses KUHN’s disengageable belt driven POLYDRIVE clutch system to drive two feed rotors which are equipped with 30 cutting sections for ultimate control over cutting length and intensity: all PRIMOR machines are capable of feeding all types of longstrand feedstuffs including straw, silage and haylage. Starting price for the basic machine (with side chute and electric control) is £34,249. PRIMOR 15070 technical specifications PRIMOR 4270 M
The PRIMOR 4270 M has a 4.2m3 capacity enabling it to take a rectangular bale up to 1.30 x 1.20 x 2.70 m, or two round bales up to 2m in diameter and 1.50m wide. Equipped as standard with intuitive electric controls, the PRIMOR 4270 M is simple to operate.
The smaller of the two new models sits between KUHN’s existing 3570 (3.5m3) and 5570 (5.5m3) machines and is fitted with an overhead chute for straw blowing and feeding: a swivelling chute is available as an option. An hydraulic tailgate with a 1.2 tonne capacity enables selfloading of round bales, with an optional remote control allowing the tailgate to be operated without the operator having to get back into the tractor cab. The PRIMOR 4270 M shares the same powerful and adjustable turbine input system as its larger counterpart, and is also equipped with KUHN’s POLYDRIVE system and a 12mm diameter chain conveyor to feed material to the turbine. Other features include a stainless steel lower turbine housing to prevent corrosion by silage effluent. Starting price for the basic machine (overhead chute) is £22,724.

Update on biosecurity measures

The government has today set out initial plans to update temporary measures in place to reduce the risk of avian flu in England, after the current Prevention Zone expires on 28 February 2017. Based on the latest situation and current scientific advice from the Chief Veterinary Officer, from 28 February the government anticipates adopting a more targeted approach with mandatory biosecurity measures across the country and continued housing or range netting in higher risk areas. These
measures would be reviewed at the end of April. Currently, anyone who keeps poultry or captive birds is required by law to house them, or otherwise keep them separate from wild birds, to reduce the risk of disease spreading. This requirement remains in place until 28 February and guidance on how to comply is available online. The proposed temporary measures are designed so keepers can allow birds outside from 28 February, whilst still taking reasonable precautions against avian flu during the current outbreak. A final decision will be confirmed at the end of February. Public Health England advises that the risk to public health from avian flu is very low and the Food Standards Agency has said
there is no food safety risk for UK consumers. Chief Veterinary Officer Nigel Gibbens said: Effective disease control will always be our priority. Based on the current situation, we believe mandatory biosecurity across England, combined with targeted housing or range netting in higher risk areas, is the best option to control disease, protect birds’ welfare and ensure consumers can buy free range products. We have acted swiftly to limit the spread of H5N8, including requiring all birds to be housed or kept separate from wild birds. The twelve week housing requirement has allowed keepers time to introduce stricter biosecurity measures and our intention now is to lift this from 28 February. Current rules on housing still remain in place until then, but we are setting out plans now to give people time to prepare. We will keep this decision under review.

The Agricultural Engineers Association (AEA) introduced the Fertiliser Spreader Testing Scheme in September 2015 as a nationally recognised test enabling machine owners to have their equipment checked and the results registered. We understand that farmers make a huge investment in a wide range of fertiliser spreading equipment and it’s therefore imperative an even spread pattern is achieved ensuring each kilogram of fertiliser produces the best return in terms of yield at harvest time. Although not a statutory requirement, crop assurance organisations require proof of calibration. An extremely useful
addition to this would be to have machines independently checked and a tray test carried out. The tray test confirms coefficient of variation (CV) across the full width of spread with the explicit aim of achieving a result below 10% for all products tested. This offers customers peace of mind they are achieving the best value for money from an expensive and important crop input. Accurate application is equally important when considering the environment. Many fields are now bordered with conservation headlands which often require a low nutrient status. The avoidance of spreading nitrogen onto these areas is necessary and the impact can be greatly reduced with spreader testing and checking the headland spreading mechanism as well as full width spreading to give further peace of mind. avoidance of all non-target area spreading will help achieve these goals. NSTS Examiners use an App to record the results of the test which also calculates the CV in the field allowing the farmer to see the results immediately and discuss any improvements that may need to be made. On completion of the test the results are recorded on the NSTS Database and a full report sent via email to the machine owner. This can then be referred to when setting up the machine for different products during the season. We strongly encourage operators to carry out regular maintenance throughout the year to ensure their equipment is applying fertilisers safely and accurately. Keeping an eye on the condition of the discs and vanes on disc spreaders is very important as wear on the vanes during the season could affect the spread pattern greatly. An NSTS test on a machine ensures the owner is getting the most out of the fertilisers being spread which in turn helps to protect the environment and waterways.
