Pre-weaned heifer calves need more milk
More than half the replacement heifer calves being reared on UK dairy units could be growing too slowly to hit targets for optimal health More than half the replacement heifer calves being reared on UK commercial dairy units could be growing too slowly to hit targets for optimal health and lifetime productivity. New practical research, carried out by a team from the Royal Veterinary College (RVC), has found that 70% of nearly 500 preweaned calves on 11 dairy farms in south east England had growth rates below the recommended 0.7kg per day and of these 20% grew at less than 0.5kg per day. More than 70% of the heifers studied were pure Holsteins. The amount of milk solids fed to individual calves on the 11 farms over their first 63 days of life ranged from 16kg to 56kg. Weaning age varied between 37 and 97 days. The work was co-funded by the Biotechnical and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and Volac. Research scientists hope the study findings
will encourage more dairy farmers to feed calves more milk during the pre-weaned phase and to monitor growth rates more closely. According to Professor Claire Wathes, who led the RVC study team, the amount of milk offered correlated positively with growth. “To achieve the recommended growth rate of at least 0.7kg per day, calves need at least 750g of milk powder per day. They should also be offered calf starter ad lib, together with forage and clean water. This improves animal health, as well as growth, and sets them up to calve for the first time by the optimum two years of age,” she said. Dr Jessica Cooke, research scientist with Volac, pointed out that the calf experiences significant health and environmental stresses during the first two weeks of life and that feeding more milk from a few days of age is important for lifetime productivity.
During the first few weeks of life, calves are unable to eat enough dry feed to meet their energy requirements and are almost entirely dependent on their milk feed,” she said. “Early growth restriction can affect the long-term performance of the adult cow. As expected, the heifer calves offered more milk in the RVC study were found to have better growth rates up to 63 days of age. But this research also highlights the growth benefits long after weaning of providing a good milk supply in early life. Those fed more were heavier and taller at seven months of age. As a result of this work and other studies, Volac has recently refined its milk feeding recommendations. The result is a ‘best- practice’ feed plan to achieve optimum results. “As a guide, calves should be fed five litres per day following the colostrum period, increasing to a minimum of six litres per day from day eight through to 35 days of age. Milk replacer levels should then be gradually reduced over a three-week period before weaning at day 56 (see table). After three weeks, the rumen should have enough bacteria fermenting enough solid feed to supply substantial amounts of energy, ensuring no growth setbacks around weaning,” Dr Cooke said.
Recommended milk feeding plan, with a 3-week weaning period, for calves fed twice daily:

Join the march towards stamping out Lameness
UK sheep producers are being encouraged to join the march towards stamping out lameness in the national flock UK sheep producers are being encouraged to join the march towards stamping out lameness in the national flock when the industry highlights how to take the first step towards better control during July. Independent experts point out that the later summer months are a great time to start implementing the proven FivePoint Plan for sheep lameness reduction, so there will be plenty of advice available throughout this period to help farmers kick-start their own disease management programme. “The sheep industry has made real progress with lameness over the last five years but must maintain momentum if it is to meet the Farm Animal Welfare Council (FAWC) target of 2 percent disease incidence in the national flock by 2021,” says Dr Ruth Clements, head of veterinary programmes at farm-based research and development organisation FAI Farms, which developed the Five-Point Plan. “Implemented correctly and given long term commitment, the Five-Point Plan gives sheep farmers a clear framework for managing lameness effectively because it builds natural disease resilience within the flock, reduces the disease challenge and spread on the farm, and improves flock immunity through vaccination.
6 | Agri News
More widespread adoption on farm will also help the sheep sector cut its use of antibiotics for foot infections and meet new industry targets; a sheep sector task force facilitated by RUMA has already signed up to a 10 percent reduction in antibiotic use by 2020,” Dr Clements adds. Dr Clements says sheep farmers are generally keen to get on top of any flock lameness issues, but sometimes feel helpless and often find it difficult to know how and where to start. “Now’s the time to start thinking about it seriously,” she says. “Weaning is an ideal time to cull out any ewes with chronic feet, re-set the breeding flock for the new sheep year and build from there.”
Farmers looking for practical advice on how to take the first step towards reducing sheep lameness in their own flock will be able to visit the MSD Animal Health stands at the NSA Sheep Event (July 18) in Malvern and the Royal Welsh Show (July 2226) in Builth Wells. During July and beyond, sheep producers should ask their vet or SQP at their local animal health product supplier for guidance and support with implementing the Five-Point Plan. Implemented correctly, the Five-Point Plan helps sheep producers make their flock less likely to succumb to lameness problems and reduces the time farmers spend wrestling with this frustrating and costly disease. Find out more at the NSA Sheep Event and Royal Welsh Show during July.

Compact tracked Teleskid launched for agriculture A tracked version of the innovative Teleskid has been introduced by JCB to handle loading and re-handling tasks in farming and forestry A tracked version of the innovative Teleskid has been introduced by JCB to handle loading and re-handling tasks in farming and forestry where conditions underfoot are delicate or especially demanding. The Teleskid 3TS-8T is unique among compact tracked loaders in having a telescopic boom that adds to the machine’s capabilities and performance envelope. It has all the benefits of the highly manoeuvrable large platform compact tracked loader on which it is based, but also the advantages that come with a telescopic boom – such as being able to load into higher-sided bulk trailers and spreaders, to stack and retrieve bales and vegetable boxes from a greater height, and to handle and push loose materials into deeper stockpiles. “This is the single most innovative development of the compact tracked loader since its launch 20 years ago,” JCB’s chief innovation and growth officer, Tim Burnhope, said. “The machine lifts higher, reaches further and digs deeper than any tracked loader of this size.” The concept of a skid-steering compact loader equipped with an extending boom is already proven on the wheeled Teleskid 3TS-8W, which has similar performance figures in terms of lift height and forward reach.
8 | Agri News
However, the tracked machine manages to lift more within safe limits thanks to its greater weight – 5.7 tonnes for the 3TS8T versus 4.4 tonnes. Rated operating capacity (35 per cent of the tipping load) for the JCB Teleskid 3TS-8T is 732kg when the purpose-engineered monoboom is at full extension, and maximum load-over height increases from 2.9m to 3.8m, with forward reach at ground level increasing from 1.1m to 2.25m. Between those two extremes there’s sufficient forward reach to load and offload pallets, potato boxes, fertiliser bulk bags and bales from one side of a standard truck or farm trailer. Operators can switch between fixed and self-levelling bucket control using a button on the in-cab control panel. With self-levelling engaged, the attachment will remain at the chosen angle throughout the lift – which helps retain loose materials in a bucket, for example – and also as the boom is lowered, so a bucket can be positioned ready to dig into a stockpile again. The tracked loader’s boom is equipped with JCB Smoothride System suspension to also help retain loose materials – and provide a more comfortable ride – when travelling over a rough surface. In addition, Teleskid operators can manipulate the boom to replicate the
characteristics of a loader with vertical lift geometry. A seven-way multi-function joystick provides precise electrohydraulic control over the boom and attachments, with three software settings for the controls and transmission enabling the machine to respond to inputs according to the operator’s preference and the working situation. As with the wheeled model, the purpose-engineered monoboom gives the machine uniquely safe and efficient cab entry via a side door. The new telescopic tracked handler is powered by a 4.4-litre JCB EcoMax engine developing 74hp and has a hydraulics system generating 90 lit/min of oil flow as standard or 125 lit/ min with the optional high-flow system. Hydrostatic drive provides precisely controlled ground speeds up to 12.6km/hr, running on 450mm wide rubber belts fitted to the rigidly-mounted track frames for a combination of traction and flotation over soft surfaces. Like its wheeled counterpart, the new JCB Teleskid 3TS8T is available through JCB Agriculture dealerships with 0.43 cubic metres or 0.36 cubic metres shovels and other attachments from the extensive JCB Agri range.

Kuhn’s i-BIO+ baler-wrapper combo at Royal Highland Show
Kuhn Farm Machinery has announced that the latest version of its i-BIO+ balerwrapper combination machine will be at this years Royal Highland Show
KUHN Farm Machinery has announced that the latest version of its i-BIO+ baler-wrapper combination machine will be on display at this year’s Royal Highland Show at Ingliston, Edinburgh, from 21st to 24th June. The latest version of the i-BIO+ baler-wrapper features KUHN’s patented film binding system to produce 100% airtight, perfectly formed, round bales. Unlike other film binding systems which use wide mantle rolls to perform the bale binding function, the KUHN system uses two standard 750mm stretch film rolls to fully encapsulate the bale. As well as improving silage preservation and making the recycling of waste plastic easier, this system also reduces plastic usage by up to 30% by pre-stretching the binding film by 70% prior to application. Film loading is also quicker and easier as each roll weighs just 27kg, compared to the wider

rolls which can weigh between 40-90kg. The i-BIO+’s high-speed wrapping ring allows film to be applied at up to 50 revolutions per minute and produces wellshaped, tightly sealed bales for improved crop preservation. The i-BIO+ also uses KUHN’s IntelliWrap system which gives complete control of the wrapping process by allowing the operator to select even and odd numbers of film to be applied. Largest ever Case IH training camp updates dealers Ten-week programme gathers over 1,000 dealer sales staff from Europe, the Middle East and Africa for training on new products and updates Ten-week programme gathers over 1,000 dealer sales staff from Europe, the Middle East and Africa for training on new products and updates / Over 60 tractors and machines totalling over 10,000hp present / Site of more than 500ha offers realistic training and operating opportunities. Updates to the St. Valentinproduced Maxxum, Puma and Optum tractors, plus the Farmlift telescopic loader range, have been the focus of one of the largest events ever organised for Case IH dealer sales staff from the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region and beyond, during an intensive training course held at a central European location. Hosted on a large farm near Bratislava, Slovakia, the training saw groups of dealers attend over a ten-week period. Each participant was able to benefit from teaching time in small groups to learn the theory behind the latest Case IH product developments, while the 500ha site meant there was also sufficient space for attendees to spend as much practical time as possible operating the machines present. “Among the highlights were the latest Case IH precision farming developments, including Advanced Farming System (AFS) upgrades and the combination of Headland

Management Centre II and AccuTurn automatic headland turning features to create the new AccuTurn Pro system”, explains Gavin Enright, Case IH commercial training manager for the EMEA region. “We also introduced dealers to Maxxum tractor developments including the Active Clutch system, which allows drive disengagement using the foot brake, and the new ActiveDrive 8 eight-step semi-powershift, which helped the Maxxum 145 Multicontroller to win the title of Machine of the Year for 2018.” “The new entry-level X specification Puma 140, 150 and 165 models were also available to examine and drive, and attendees were introduced to the latest upgrades for Puma long wheelbase models, with dealers able to learn about front axle improvements, fuel efficiency enhancements such as a new variable-pitch fan, a unique-to-this-class exhaust brake, powershift/ CVX transmission benefits, and changes made necessary by the introduction of the Tractor Mother Regulations.”
CVX model at the base of the range. In addition, there was the opportunity to learn about performance and capability improvements for the Farmlift range of telescopic loaders, including Stage IV engines with Hi-eSCR emissions technology, a high capacity hydraulic pump option for Farmlift 632, 735 and 935 models and enhanced power shuttle functions on the Farmlift 635 and 742, plus new LED light packages for all models. “The training provided an opportunity for many dealer staff to enhance their knowledge of a number of developments announced publicly at November’s Agritechnica show in Hanover, Germany, while other introductions were new at the event,” says Mr Enright. “Feedback from dealers regarding the product developments and the way they were presented was very positive. For Case IH, that confirms the value of this sort of training in providing dealers with the product knowledge and operating advice that will then form a part of selling and supporting those products.”

Young farmers needed to represent British food and farming at pageant A group of enthusiastic young farmers, who are making a real difference within farming are being sought to join the NFU A group of enthusiastic young farmers, who are making a real difference within farming and have great stories to tell, are being sought to join the NFU in one of the most popular historic civic pageants in the world. The NFU is launching a competition to find eight young farmers who will land starring roles representing British farming in the 2018 Lord Mayor’s show and take the Back British Farming message to the streets of the City of London. The 803rd parade takes place on Saturday 10 November and is featured in a live BBC broadcast. The NFU will be joined by Massey Ferguson to support the Worshipful Company of Farmers in this year’s show. The entry will incorporate a tractor, combine harvester and food with the participants providing the heart and soul of the exhibit. As an additional prize this year, Massey Ferguson is inviting one of the young farmers on a special trip to Beauvais in Northern France as a guest to tour the factory and enjoy an overnight stay. NFU Vice President Stuart Roberts said: “It’s always great fun having the young farmers with us at the Lord Mayor’s Show as it provides the perfect platform to engage with the

watching crowds and let them know about farming’s role in producing their food and looking after the iconic British countryside. “We are hoping this competition, with the added incentive of a trip to the Massey Ferguson factory in France, will help showcase another group of young farmers who’re all enthusiastic and passionate about what they do – producing the nation’s food.” Hannah Binns, who was part of the young farmer group last year, said: “For me, participating in the Lord Mayor’s Show as the NFU North West representative was a once in a lifetime experience – after all it’s not every day that you escort a new tractor and combine down the narrow streets of the capital city live on national television. “A particular highlight was seeing the enthusiasm the British public had for British farmers – from children highfiving me to grown men taking selfies – and it was fantastic to see the public fully support the
campaign and message we were promoting. “I believe it is vital that we, as the future generation of farmers, open a dialogue with the public about the provenance of their food and the Lord Mayor’s Show is an excellent way to do so. If you are a young farmer who is passionate about the future of our industry then why not apply and get your voice heard – I promise you will not regret it.” The NFU is asking for nominations for young farmers, aged 18-30, who have made an outstanding contribution to the farming sector and who are passionate about the industry. Please include as much information as possible on why you think your nominee deserves to represent British farming and the wider farming industry at this year’s Lord Mayor’s Show. Nominations close on Sunday 19 August and a shortlist of finalists will be drawn up for 31 August by a panel of farming experts.
Effective Poultry House Cleaning Steve Birchall Poultry House Cleaning Services High pressure powerwashing, disinfectant and cleaners With the poultry industry experiencing more than its fair share of problems over the past 12 months or so no poultry producer can afford to hinder flock performance by allowing a build up of micro organisms. Even low disease levels drag profits back and skimping on the cleaning routine between flocks is false economy, says Lancashire based cleaning specialist Steve Birchall. “There is no opportunity these days to rest buildings between flocks. Turnaround times are tight and it is, therefore, vital that buildings are not only throughly cleaned but disinfected as well, and if there has been a problem
the cleaning and disinfection treatment should take account of it” says Steve, who has been operating a nationwide poultry contract shed cleaning business for over 30 years. His three teams are equipped to carry out whatever cleaning regime producers require and he suggests a good standard routine for anyone who wants the best safeguard. After the litter has been removed, the building and any equipment either retained inside or taken out should be power washed at about 2,500 psi with a combined cleaner/ sanitizer/deodorizer, which should remove some of the 80% of micro organisms at this stage.
“Older buildings are often more difficult to clean than modern ones”, Steve says, “However, if you are going to do the job at all, then it is worth doing properly and you have to take sufficient time, particularly in breeder or laying units where nest boxes and equipment have been in place for 12 months or more. Broiler units with a six or seven day turnaround are less difficult. However, people who prefer to do what is a rather unpleasant job themselves often get rather jaded before it has been done properly. If there are other enterprises on the farm, they have to keep breaking off to do other work.

UK poultry breeding programme gets investment boost Aviagen has recently completed the first phase of a more than 35 million Euro investment in its UK breeding program
Aviagen has recently completed the first phase of a more than 35 million Euro investment in its UK breeding program, with the aim of benefitting Aviagen’s customer base through the provision of broilers and breeders of the highest genetic merit and product quality. As the demand for Aviagen products continues to grow worldwide, the company’s infrastructure is being strengthened accordingly. “Continual investment in our facilities is an integral part of our strategy,” says Alfons Koerhuis, chief technical officer, Aviagen Group, “and we are consistently strengthening our balanced breeding program to optimize the health, welfare and production traits of our core products. At the same time, we continually develop our range of products so that we can offer our customers a product portfolio to suit
26 | Agri News
different market requirements. All of this requires ongoing and substantial investment in our facilities.” The company’s pedigree farming base in the UK, which is one of the two breeding programs at the core of Aviagen’s operation, now has the advantage of more than 40% additional space as a result of a series of farm expansions. This allows for even higher selection pressure and associated delivery of genetic progress for customers worldwide. The expansion and upgrades to existing facilities have brought with them increased space for state-of-the-art technology to aid Aviagen’s balanced selection process. This includes further expansion of transponderbased feed intake data capture as well as novel selection techniques for leg health, yield and meat quality. “With feed being the largest
poultry production cost, improved FCR brings huge economic and sustainability benefits. We have always put FCR at the top of our agenda for our selection, and this increased investment allows us to deliver even higher amounts of progress to the field – which is good both for producers and for the environmental impact of the broiler industry,” comments Magnus Swalander, general manager, Aviagen. All farms feature the latest design features, including cross-ventilated buildings, high insulation, efficient heating and temperature control with the construction of covered walkways providing industry-leading biosecurity and welfare. In addition to the investment at pedigree level, a brandnew GGP farm has been built with one of Aviagen’s contract farmers. Investment in the new facility, which can house 20,000 birds, is in excess of 1.75 million Euro and adds another 5% production capacity to the company’s high-generation facilities in the UK. The new farm is designed to the most modern specifications and uses innovative technology to provide the highest welfare standards and achieve excellent biological performance.
