Kuhn Farm Machinery - Film binding innovation on tour

Live demonstrations of Kuhn Farm Machinery’s patented film binding system are being staged across the country

L

ive demonstrations of KUHN Farm Machinery’s patented film binding system are being staged across the country over the summer months, providing many opportunities for farmers to see the awardwinning technology in action. Winner of the silver award in the Livestock Innovation category at LAMMA 2019, this system uses wrap instead of net binding, thereby improving bale conservation quality whilst simultaneously reducing the burden of recycling. Unlike other film binding systems which use wide mantle rolls to perform the bale binding function, the KUHN system uses two standard 750mm stretch film rolls to fully encapsulate the bale. As well as improving silage preservation and making

4 | AgriNews

the recycling of waste plastic easier, this system also reduces plastic usage by up to 30% by pre-stretching the wrapping film by 70% prior to application. Film loading is also quicker and easier as each roll weighs just 27kg, compared to the wider rolls which can weigh between 40-90kg. The film binding system is available on KUHN’s FBP 3135 BalePack and i-BIO round baler-wrapper combination machines, both of which also use KUHN’s IntelliWrap system which enables the operator to wrap the bale with 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9 layers of film as appropriate. Both machines can also be used with conventional net binding: switching between film and net binding is quick and simple as the two systems are separate, with enough space available

to carry film and net rolls at the same time, therefore making it easy to switch from one system to the other for different crops or between different fields. Farmers interested in seeing film binding innovation in action can call the relevant KUHN area sales manager for details on their nearest event: David Sharp, Scotland/ Borders:07802 389184 Nigel Donkin, North:07802 389185 John Hulland, central England:07802 389183 David Rose, Wales/ Borders:07802 389186 Paul Gregory, eastern counties:07802 389182 Tim Holliday, South/South West:07802 389181

Tyre technology to help reduce soil compaction

Continental has released a range of new agricultural tyres to help reduce the impact of heavy machinery on the soil pressures which helps to distribute the weight of the machine and reduce soil compaction. Richard Hutchins, agricultural tyre specialist at Continental explains: “The correct pressure for tractor tyres is dependent on the load and speed required to carry out the required task. Not using ontinental has released the correct pressure is a major a range of new cause of soil compaction. the circumference of the tyre up to one hundred times, Continental has created an agricultural tyre that holds its shape, even when run at very low pressures. Richard adds: “The bead is as important as the rubber and nylon in a tyre. Our research showed a more flexible tyre with a stronger single bead construction can be run at a lower pressure which helps to reduce soil compaction. Tyres with a single wire bead are safer and quicker to fit, hold the rim better and transfer torque more efficiently which reduces slippage, especially on wet ground. Most importantly the tyre will grip the rim even at very low pressures. This means farmers can further spread a machine’s weight and help protect the soil beneath.” Continental has so far applied this technology to combine harvester tyres and tyres suitable for tractors in the up to 200hp sector. Currently tractor tyres are offered in 65, 70 and 85 series from 24 inches to 42 inches and combine harvester tyres are offered at 32 inches. Development of new agricultural tyres continues at its production facility in Lousado, Portugal, and larger tractor tyre sizes will be available before the end of 2019. AgriNews | 5

John Deere awards the top apprentices of 2018

John Deere’s 2018 Ag anf Turf Tech graduate apprentices with Allan Cochran and Jonathon Henry at the presentation ceremony in April

A

total of 31 young service technicians have formally graduated from the latest John Deere Ag Tech and Turf Tech advanced apprenticeship programmes, which are run in partnership with national training provider ProVQ at the purpose-built John Deere Apprentice Training Centre in Radcliffe-onTrent, Nottinghamshire. Apprentice of the Year for 2018 was Henry Smith of Cornthwaite Agricultural Ltd in Ormskirk, who received a crystal plaque, winner’s certificate and a John Deere tool kit worth £500. The runners-up were Martyn Burnett of HRN Tractors Ltd, Insch and William Storr of Rea Valley Tractors, Sudbury, who each received a certificate and high street vouchers worth £250. The annual apprentice graduation ceremony was held at the East Midlands Conference Centre on the University of Nottingham campus for the first time, with the students’ parents and dealer representatives also invited to celebrate the occasion. John Deere Limited managing director Jonathan Henry presented the apprentices with their graduation certificates, while after-dinner guest speaker and TV presenter Guy Martin, together with ProVQ chairman Julian Lloyd, handed over the three apprentice of the year

awards. These awards are based on the trainees’ consistently high standards of work, both at their dealerships and at the training centre, over the three years of the apprenticeship. In addition, all central government approved apprenticeships in England now require an end-point assessment, over and above the log of work progress that was kept for each apprentice before last year. The majority of the 2018 graduates were therefore the first John Deere technicians to qualify under the new EPA rules. “With the new EPA tests, which were held at Langar in April, both John Deere and our dealers are now able to quantify more effectively the skills of the apprentices we are training,” says John Deere Limited training centre manager Allan Cochran. “An EPA pass mark of above 90 per cent was required to earn a distinction and well over half the apprentices we tested achieved this, which was well above our initial expectations, so we have got off to a great start with these new assessments.” John Deere’s three-year Ag Tech and Turf Tech and two-year Parts

Tech apprenticeships involve students being trained in engineering, electronics, hydraulics, diagnostics, communication skills, computing, sales and marketing. The programmes lead to IMI Level 2 & 3 Diplomas in Landbased Engineering and Vehicle Parts Competence, and registration at LTA Intermediate level in the industry’s Landbased Training Accreditation scheme. In subsequent years qualified technicians undergo further education and adult training within the John Deere University programme, on a career path that can ultimately lead to the highest possible LTA Master Technician accreditation. New student intakes are in September each year; apprentices need to be resident in the UK, sponsored by a John Deere dealer and aged 16 or over. The standard programmes include on-the-job training and assessment as well as eight weeks each year at the John Deere Apprentice Training Centre. New AEA President is Adrian Winnett, managing director for Argo Tractors

Adrian Winnett, Managing Director for Argo Tractors operations in the UK and Ireland

A

drian Winnett, Managing Director of Argo Tractors operations in the UK and Ireland, has been elected President of AEA, the organisation for agricultural and horticultural engineering companies in Great Britain, after serving two years as chairman of the AEA Farm Equipment Council. “It’s an honour I couldn’t have imagined when I left school and started repairing tractors at my father’s equipment dealership in Towcester,” he said. “And, frankly, it wasn’t something I could foresee at any other time

during my career in tractor and farm equipment sales.” In September 2018, after around 10 years running the Amazone farm equipment business in the UK, Adrian Winnett was appointed Managing Director for the UK and Irish markets by Landini manufacturer Argo Tractors with plans to recruit a larger team to support an expanded dealer network as a driver for increased sales.

“Dealer networks are restructuring as more manufacturers go ‘full line’ in the hope of securing more business from their dealerships,” he points out. “Argo remains focused on its core products – including Landini tractors from 43225hp – while emphasising its support for dealer To find your local dealer please visit: independence, www.landini.agriargouk.co.uk which enables them to decide Wharfedale Tractors on the other products they Riffa Business Park sell.”

As President of the AEA, his role will be to lead the management board while the farm equipment and

outdoor power equipment councils and specialist groups on manufacturing, training and education, chemical applications, sprayer testing, service management and allterrain vehicles focus on current issues and initiatives. “Consultation on proposed legislation as it impacts machinery and helping members interpret and implement new rules when they are introduced remain key functions of the AEA, along with the statistics and export services,” says,” Mr Winnett. “As our relationship with the rest of Europe and the world evolves, I think membership of the AEA by agricultural and outdoor power equipment companies has never been more important.” Speaking at the annual conference of AEA, he also called for the UK agricultural engineering industry to continue finding ways to retain and attract young talent, not just from within but also from outside the industry. “It is a terrible shame that beyond our own circle neither of the words ‘agriculture’ and ‘engineering’ resonate in terms of a career choice with the majority of young people," he said. “Yet we all know what challenging, fulfilling and rewarding opportunities there are in agriculture generally and in the agricultural and groundscare machinery sectors in particular.

Are you seeking a reliable ‘sidekick’, perhaps also for feeding livestock?

Zetor tractors have been used for numerous operations all over the world for a long time.

Z

ETOR tractors have been used for numerous operations all over the world for a long time. In Estonia, on the Valingu Mõis farm, our ZETOR MAJOR CL 80 model was added to the five existing tractors in September last year. The company Valingu Mõis was established in 1991 and specializes in livestock breeding. It takes care of about 400 cows on an area of 600 hectares. On the farm, farm machines are used particularly for cultivating the fields of crops which serve as fodder for the animals. The ZETOR MAJOR CL 80 joined the tractor fleet in September 2018, when it became the first ZETOR tractor used in Valingu Mõis. The company’s director Urmas Maandi himself chose it to be part of the farm machine fleet: “When deciding on the purchase, the price to quality ratio was decisive. In addition, I had references from the neighborhood, where they had a positive experience with ZETOR.”

12 | AgriNews

After eight months of hard work every day, the ZETOR tractor has 900 engine hours on its account. Thanks to the front loader it is used mainly for feeding animals and cleaning and loading manure. So over time it has become a necessary part of the farm machine group. Urmas Maandi appreciates its reliability and simplicity: “If you spend whole days in the tractor in the field, it is important that the tractor is comfortable and easy to adjust and operate. We prefer machines with a lower number of electronic devices, because a lot of electronics means the possible failure of the machine, which we cannot afford. The new ZETOR meets this and, in addition, it is faster than the previous model, so we are satisfied with it very much.” The acceleration of the entire process has also resulted in a productivity increase and higher yields. Along with the everyday use of the tractor, it is also important for the new owner to have a good

connection with the regional dealer – who is helpful with the purchase, but also able to help in the case of unexpected complications or failures of course. Urmas Maandi was very much satisfied with the entire process. “The entire purchase of the tractor only took a week, which I appreciated. The dealer’s representative was competent, he explained all technical matters and also cooperation with their technician was outstandingly quick,” said Urmas Maandi as he praised the Estonian dealer’s approach. And what are the farm’s plans for the future? Valingu Mõis currently has a total of six tractors and ten employees. Since its establishment after the fall of the Soviet Union, it has been flourishing and growing successfully. So it is possible that one more arrival will be added to the current MAJOR CL 80 tractor in the future. Thanks to this positive experience, it may once again be a ZETOR tractor.

National Sprayer Testing Service Ian foreman - NSTS Manager

The NSTS have over 240 test centres around the whole of the UK able to offer at least one of the test types required to meet legislation

T

he NSTS have over 240 test centres around the whole of the UK able to offer at least one of the test types required to meet current legislation for pesticide application equipment (PAE) testing. Around 10% of these also provide fertiliser spreader testing where we have seen a steady increase in the number of tests carried out. Fertiliser input costs are on a par with pesticides and with the benefits of having a sprayer tested each year, these benefits can also be realised with spreader testing. The effects of uneven application of fertiliser are not always visible but yield variations will be at time of harvest and that loss in yield directly relates to lost input costs where the crop cannot achieve its full po-

tential. From the NSTS test, following an inspection of the machine and tray test to calculate coefficient of variation (CV) you can be confident that the spreader will give the best results possible from the products tested. Back to PAE testing; there are four different tests available to cover all different types – liquid, slug pellets, micro granules and fogging machines. Liquid covers a wide range from sprayers, weed wipers and seed treatment, through to potato application equipment, boat sprayers and train sprayers. The list is very extensive and wide ranging. Red Tractor do have different timescales for test and retest and this can also be dependent on which scheme you are in so its always worth checking the

protocols for confirmation. Take a look at the NSTS website www.nsts.org.uk where you can find much of this information, along with details of where to find a test centre in your area. Anyone applying professional pesticides must have their equipment tested. This includes horticulture and fruit but also sprayers working in the amenity sector. Ranging from pavements and highways, rail lines and stations, school and sports grounds and golf courses, amenity has an important role to play and it is vital in the public spaces they operate that equipment is in the best condition to apply pesticides safely and accurately.

Global milk supplies look set to tighten this year

The impact of last year’s drought continued to hang over EU milk production at the start of this year

G

lobal milk supplies look set to tighten this year as the pressure on farmer margins in the US has led to lower than normal growth, while the EU is limited by a smaller dairy herd. The increase in global production for 2019 has been lowered from 0.9% to 0.3% (+900 million litres), according to AHDB Dairy. It comes as world consumption of fresh dairy products is expected to increase by 1.8%. The impact of last year’s drought continued to hang over EU milk production in the first two months of this year. This led to a fall in milk production compared to last year. However, strong growth in supplies during March compensated for the disappointing start to the year. Overall during Q1, EU milk supplies was up by 0.3% (+ 130M litres) compared to last year. Growth in EU milk production for 2019 is expected to be relatively modest at 0.7%, around 1

18 | AgriNews

billion litres. However, production growth could be restricted as the size of the EU milking herd has fallen by 1.6% (-374,000 head) on the year due to of higher culling rates.

Austria is severely impacted In Australia, production has been more severally impacted, with a prolonged drought affecting yields and putting strain on farmer margins.

Lower prices in US and weather issues in NZ In the US, growth in milk supplies is expected to slow down. Historically, US milk production has increased between 1-2% every year.

Q1 milk production was down 11% on the year. Culling rates remain high and many dairy producers are drying cows off early due to feed shortages as the season comes to a close. Production is expected to fall by 1% in 2019.

A prolonged period of lower prices has put farmers under pressure, which has led to higher culling and producer exit rates. As such, the USDA expect that milk production will only grow marginally this year at 0.5% (+ 500M litres). In the southern hemisphere, weather issues have impacted on milk production. In New Zealand, drought has hampered milk production. In March, production was down 8% on the year. It is unlikely that production in 2H 2019 will be able to match the highs of last year, and so it is expected that milk production for 2019 will remain relatively flat.

Argentinean milk production fell by 8% during Q1 as heat stress affected yields. Though there has been some recovery in the milk price rising input costs are eroding margins. Some recovery in production levels is expected in the second half of the year as a good grains harvest will help to ease the pressure on margins, assuming stable weather. Though there is a high level of uncertainty over where how Argentinean production will progress throughout the year, we expect that there will be a year-on-year decline in the region of around -5%.

UK farmers among first to experience floating farm

The Scottish farmers are among the first on the newly opened floating farm in Rotterdam

Y

oung farmers from the UK are among the first in the world to experience Rotterdam's floating dairy in action on a recent learning journey to the Netherlands. As the first visitors, the group of twenty tasted the success of farming innovation, sampling one of the first batches of bottled milk produced by the farm. The visit comes as the first cows arrived at the self-sufficient Floating Farm on 13 May. The animals will produce around 800 litres of milk per day. Dairy farmer and Chair of the NFU Scotland Next Generation, Colin Ferguson, said 'Dutch innovation' is inspiring. He highlighted that the farm was an example of how innovation was adding value to the industry and also showing the value of food production. “The project was very much a proof of concept rather than a wholly commercial enterprise but it was clear that it had created positive discussion and excitement for dairy farming within the city. “It wouldn’t be a stretch to imagine something similar in any of our cities within the UK,” he said. The floating farm wasn’t the only tour to leave delegates swimming with ideas. The farmers also visited a carbon neutral chicken farm and PigMe, a business where pigs are farmed and lazed in fields,

forests and meadows over 10 locations close to the consumer with dedicated caretakers. Mr Ferguson said it's important that farmers see first-hand how innovation can 'transform and challenge' traditional farming practices and engage urban consumers in a 'meaningful and transparent' way. He said: “For example, one of the farms we visited Kipster, has a 24hr viewing room of their chickens which is a new way of thinking to educate the public. The floating farm wasn’t the only tour to leave delegates swimming with ideas The floating farm wasn’t the only tour to leave delegates swimming with ideas “The consumer will always purchase cheap food, it is our responsibility as farmers to share our stories and add the value to our supply chain,” he added.

The learning journey was a collaboration between Scottish Enterprise, Rural Youth Project, Jane Craigie Marketing, Rural Youth Project vlogger and tour guide Dirk-Jan Kloet with an aim to challenge delegates to “think different” on the urban and rural divide. Co-convener of the trip, Jane Craigie co-director and founder of the Rural Youth Project, said communication and innovation can connect rural and city together. “The Dutch have a real aptitude for harnessing the power of storytelling to connect with consumers and they’re constantly pushing boundaries when it comes to agriculture and business. “Rotterdam’s floating dairy is just one example of how Dutch innovation is challenging contemporary ideals,” she said.

Poultry demand grows on back of African swine fever

Globally, the increased demand from China may help support prices in the global poultry market this year

T

he ongoing African swine fever problem in the world's largest pig producing country, China, is increasing the demand for other proteins besides pork. With recent forecasts suggesting Chinese pork production could fall by over 10 million tonnes, other proteins are needed to fill the supply gap. Chinese production will likely increase and reports already show growing poultry feed demand, according to AHDB Pork. However, breeding stock availability is currently limited. Most traditional suppliers of grandparent stock are banned due to Avian Influenza controls. Although Poland was re-

24 | AgriNews

opened towards the end of 2018, this will not support production until the end of this year. Increased import levels are also expected, with market access recently opening to a number of countries. Official trade data records Chinese imports of fresh/frozen poultry already increasing 40% (+42,000 tonnes) year on year in the first quarter. This compares with a 3% increase in fresh/frozen pork (+10,000 tonnes). When offal is included, pig meat imports have actually fallen by 8%, driven by a fall in offal shipments from the US. AHDB Pork says it is probable that pork import demand will pick up more significantly later in the year.

Increased demand for poultry With tightening protein supplies, poultry imports may also grow further. The USDA anticipates Chinese chicken meat imports could rise by nearly 70% this year. Globally, the increased demand from China may help support prices in the global poultry market this year. Rising import demand is also expected from other key importers, including Japan, Mexico and the EU. Global exports are therefore forecast to grow 3% overall, to 11.6 million tonnes. However, developments in global trade restrictions will also be important, and Avian Influenza remains a concern.

BVA hails MAC’s recommendation for vets to be reinstated

The BVA has today hailed the Migration Advisory Committee’s (MAC) recommendations for vets to be reinstate on the Shortage Occupation List

T

he British Veterinary Association (BVA) has today hailed the Migration Advisory Committee’s (MAC) recommendation for vets to be reinstated on the Shortage Occupation List as a “huge win for animal welfare and a resounding vote of confidence in the veterinary community”. In today’s report, MAC recommends to the Home Office that vets should be restored to the list after being removed in 2011, to help address concerns about capacity meeting future demand and make it easier to recruit into the profession. The committee said it was making its recommendation as it was clear from the evidence submitted that the veterinary profession is facing significant recruitment difficulties. BVA, which represents over 18,000 veterinary professionals in the UK, had been running a major campaign for vets to be restored to the list to help safeguard against a future crisis in workforce capacity. In its submission to the committee, produced jointly with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), it highlighted the high proportion of EU vets

working in the UK, and raised concerns that an already stretched veterinary workforce could struggle to cope with increased demand for some services after Brexit. The call was supported by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), who made their own submission to the committee on behalf of vets. Around 95% of the vets carrying out critical public health work and animal welfare monitoring in abattoirs hail from overseas, predominantly the EU. BVA has also raised concerns that demand for veterinary certification and health testing services could spiral in the event of a no deal Brexit, placing significant pressures on the workforce. Simon Doherty, BVA President, said: “MAC’s recommendation today is a huge win for animal welfare and a resounding vote of confidence in the veterinary community and the multiple benefits it realises across the UK. We are absolutely delighted that the committee has heeded our calls and recognised the need to reinstate vets on the list to keep workforce supply and resilience high in the unpredictable times ahead.

“Working with our members and stakeholders, BVA has run a concerted campaign to restore vets on the list, and we are delighted that these efforts have paid off. While this is a very welcome boost, the profession itself is also doing a huge amount of work to understand and address recruitment and retention challenges both now and into the future. As part of its campaign, BVA met recently with Immigration Minister Caroline Nokes to outline its concerns over workforce recruitment and retention and the steps that the veterinary profession is taking to address this. The Home Office will now consider and respond to MAC’s recommendations. Mr Doherty added: “We now urge the Home Office to review and act on the committee’s recommendations. Reinstating vets on the list would be a decisive move to help develop a flexible, skilled and robust veterinary workforce that meets the UK’s needs for both the immediate future and in the longer term.”

Influencing the egg size through feed and nutrition

If you need to adjust the average egg size that your flock is currently laying, then changing the birds’ diet will probably be the last thing you do

T

he key influencers of egg size are a sequenced relationship of firstly the breed potential followed by the lighting programme, both during the rearing period and when coming into lay. It is only well into lay that the influence of feed can have impact. The fine tuning of your flock’s diet may be all that is required to adjust the average egg size into the size category needed to improve your business’ viability.

A choice of feeds If you need to increase your average egg size and your flock is already in lay, then you are left with the last tool in the box: nutrition. But you need to use a fine adjust screwdriver, not a hammer. Many feed suppliers offer their egg producer customers a limited range of a few diets as the bird develops and progresses through its productive life. So why does a supplier like Humphrey Feeds & Pullets, with over 50 years of experience milling their own feeds offer around 300? Sales director Martin Humphrey explains: “Over 300 diets sounds a lot! However, these do include different ranges, differentiated by GM and non-GM, natural vs nature, identical pigment as well as organic. Within each range of diets will be nearly 40 variations, based on a few key diets, each of which have slightly different nutritional objectives. “Over the past 15 years, a laying bird’s performance has increased

26 | AgriNews

significantly. Modern hybrid birds are such finely tuned high performance athletes, so you have to be careful to avoid tripping them up by changing their diets too radically. Instead we give farmers the means to support their layers from our extensive range of diets which provide gradual and more frequent changes in the feed that they give to their birds.” Individual flocks can have differing nutritional needs depending on their environment and circumstances. Humphrey Feeds & Pullets has a network of poultry experts who visit flocks on their farms and advise customers on the optimal feed type to utilise, as well as other aspects of bird management such as egg quality, flock health and longevity. “Previously, customers often wanted to control and push down average egg weights,” says Humphrey, “so we offered a ‘Small Egg Size’ variations of the standard feeds. More recently, however, consumer demand has pushed for more large eggs so now we offer ‘Large Egg Size’ diets too.”

Welfare matters “This is still relatively new territory,” says Humphrey. “We’re proceeding very cautiously to see how we can best encourage and support hens to produce larger eggs, whilst maintaining bird health and welfare.” Producing too many eggs which are too large can cause stress, leading to feather loss and problems with thermo-regulation. When the outside temperature

drops, the birds will eat more, compounding the problem of larger eggs.

Tradition versus a new approach As the birds age egg production naturally dips whilst egg size increases. There are therefore advantages to altering feed to control egg size, whilst supporting bird welfare and shell quality. Conventional thinking has been to step down the energy and nutrient content of diets after birds reach their optimum weight and production has started to decrease. However, over the last ten years the iso-kinetic range of diets has gained in popularity; the energy content is maintained, while most other nutrient levels are reduced. Birds generally eat to their energy needs and a low energy diet encourages overfeeding. Whereas energy intake has little effect on egg size, decreasing the nutritional density of the diet can limit further increases in egg size.

Gently does it Consumer demand for larger egg size has increased recently, but whichever way the average size needs to go, gradual change is best for production and for the birds’ health. Egg producers should ensure that their feed supplier can deliver a finely tuned range of feeds in order to make slight but effective tweaks rather than radical leaps, which can shock the finely tuned
