Continental: New tyres reduce fuel consumption
Continental TractorMaster tyres have been judged the most efficient in a European tyre perfomance review specialist Richard Hutchins.
C
ontinental TractorMaster tyres have been judged the most efficient in a European tyre performance review. The review was carried out by the German agricultural society Deutsche Landwirtschafts-Gesellschaft (DLG) and included a number of practical tractor tests to establish which agricultural tyres are the most efficient for tractor use. The TractorMaster tyre was the most fuel efficient of all premium brand tyres tested. It also delivered the most efficient transmission of engine power offering the best ratio of tractive output to PTO of the brands on test. “This review shows our tyres, when set to the same pressure for load, are three percent faster over the same distance and use less fuel to complete the same task,” says Continental agricultural tyre
8 | AgriNews | March 2020
The tyres are uniquely manufactured using new technology that Continental has applied to an agricultural tyre for the first time. N-Flex Technology is a patent pending, heat-treated nylon that sits beneath the rubber. It enables the tyre to keep its shape which reduces rolling resistance on the road and lowers fuel consumption. “Tractor tyres reach high temperatures during road use. With the standard nylon used in the manufacture of tyres, after a long run when parked overnight, the tyres cool to the shape of the parked position creating so called ‘flat spots’. When the tractor is used again, the operator will experience ride disturbance because the tyres are not a perfect circle. N-Flex Technology reduces the occurrence of flat spots and provides a more comfortable ride,” explains Mr Hutchins. Technological developments in the construction of the tyre’s bead and lug design increase fuel and operational efficiencies. Mr Hutchins adds: “Our research showed a more flexible tyre with a stronger single bead filament construction is safer and allows the tyre to be fitted to the rim with greater ease, the
bead also holds the rim better and transfers torque more efficiently which reduces fuel consumption. Our d.fine lug design has a five percent larger surface area which extends the life of the tyre and offers the operator a more comfortable ride onroad and more traction in the field.” The tyres were tested on the road and in the field to determine the fuel consumption, ground coverage, and operational efficiency. The DLG use ‘PowerMix’, a test that consists of 14 test cycles to simulate various loads on the tractor and measure its fuel and AdBlue consumption. The individual test cycles replicate typical field and transport applications at half load and full load. These include ploughing and cultivating, but also mixed work that applies load on the transmission, the PTO and the hydraulic system such as the use of a power harrow or baler. “This test is as close to everyday farming as possible and shows how efficient the tyres tested are for real farm work,” concludes Mr Hutchins.

Developing state-of-the-art feeding technology since 1991
Since 1991 Holm & Laue has been developing state-of-the-art feeding technology for performance-aware calf husbandry
T
oday, these solid and weather-proof systems form the basis of laboursaving and healthy calf rearing around the world. Many characteristics that are considered standard in today's feeding technology originate in developments from Holm & Laue. In the course of all these years, the automatic calf feeders were enhanced and extended with calf feeding and calf husbandry innovations. Please have a look at some milestones of the history of our company: 1994 Holm & Laue goes for weight-responsive ration quantities in automatic calf feeding. This means that the dispensed amount is determined in relation to the weight gain of the calves. 1996 The Joker Automatic Feeder is introduced with two mixing units, to feed two calves individually yet simultaneously. 1998 The mixing system nicknamed "TOM" is awarded the DLG Silver Medal at the 1998 Eurotier show. The spacious group Igloo from Holm & Laue approx. 15m² (161½sq.ft) is one of the most important innovations in recent years and, in the meantime, has become the cornerstone of healthy outdoor calf husbandry around the world.
10 | AgriNews | March 2020
2000 The new H&L 100 Automatic Feeder replaces the H&L Joker. To the tried and tested operation principles, further options are added. With a design that pleases the eye, the H&L 100 looks the feeder of the future that it is and that does not leave anything to be desired. The transition to the H&L 100 is also a new impulse for our export business. Farmers in many countries around the world can turn the advantages of our leading-edge feeding technology to their benefit. 2002 Holm & Laue extends the H&L Igloo and turns it into a full outdoor calf housing system. The H&L Igloo System is the optimum mediator between calf health and work efficiency. 2004 On the occasion of the Eurotier 2004 show, Holm & Laue is awarded the Innovation Prize of DLZ Publishers for the H&L Igloo Veranda, distinguished as an innovation particularly well matched to the daily routines of the industry. 2005 The H&L Milk Taxi completes the product offering for of state-of-the-art calf feeding with a solution for individual hutches and nursing buckets. 2006 The next development in line is a process-controlled
pasteuriser for milk intended for the calves' diet, which is available as an additional option for the Milk Taxi. 2007 The company moves to a new manufacturing facility at Westerrönfeld. 2008 A small-group housing design, the Kalo-Veranda DUO (today, the MultiMax Veranda) is another extension of the portfolio. 2009 Our offerings welcome more newcomers, Calf-Tel's individual hutches and the Pen System. Plus, the Calf Garden introduces itself as a fully fledged design for roofing individual hutches, in line with the requirements of practical application. 2010 The company brings the coloQuick colostrum management system to market. Just arrived, coloQuick wins several valuable international awards: Agromek, Denmark: distinguished innovation with maximum relevance for daily practice Innov'SPACE, France: one star for the new colostrum management method DLZ Innovations Prize 2011 in the Cattle Feeding category 2011 The Calf-Tel individual hutches are upgraded with the practical FlexyFence exercise area.

Germinal: 2020 vision for more milk from forage
Significant increases in grass energy yield/ha and the imporoved milk from forage potential resulting - were highlighted in the findings of new research Significant increases in grass energy yield/ha – and the improved milk from forage potential resulting – were highlighted in the findings of two new research projects presented at a recent industry briefing. Work on the value of sward quality and a separate study on multi-cut silage, carried out by Germinal and Volac respectively, were revealed alongside a paper from SRUC professor of dairy nutrition John Newbold, who outlined how maximising milk from forage is positive for bottom line profitability, whatever the production system. Analysing data from different dairy systems – ranging from an intensive high output system, to a more extensive grazing-based system, and farms in the middle ground – Prof Newbold said across all three farm types, feed was the biggest business cost. Moreover, in all three cases, the most profitable 25% of farms were the ones that produced more milk from forage – whether grazed grass, silage or a combination. Describing forage as “natural capital”, his advice for profitability was to grow better grass, make better silage and to use the silage better. 14 | AgriNews | March 2020
Following on from Professor Newbold’s prompt on the importance of growing better grass, Germinal GB’s Ben Wixey referenced a new study now underway at the Germinal Research Station, where the metabolisable energy (ME) yield/ha value of perennial ryegrasses is being compared with the energy potential from weed grasses that predominate in deteriorating swards. “Grass leys do deteriorate with age, which means lower value weed species replace the perennial ryegrasses that were selected and sown at the time of reseeding,” he said. “Despite this knowledge, it’s a fact that reseeding rates remain stubbornly low, and that all too many swards contain a significant proportion of weed species that will affect productivity. “At our Melksham facility we are measuring and analysing the common weed grasses alongside modern perennial ryegrasses, so that we are able calculate the impact of declining sward quality and therefore the value of routine reseeding. “Taking just the second cut silage scenario in our trials, we’ve calculated that a new reseed would potentially contribute around 2,000 litres/ ha more milk from forage than
a five year old ley with just half of the perennial ryegrass remaining. If we extend the life of the old ley to ten years, with just 25% perennial ryegrass remaining, then the difference rises to 3,410 litres/ ha. If we apply a milk price of 27p/litre, this roughly equates to an extra 500 - 1,000/ha in additional milk from forage, simply by maintaining sward quality. “As our trials programme continues, we’ll be able to look at the impact over a full silage making season and also gain a better understanding of the impact in grazing scenarios too.” With more dairy farmers now making multi-cut silage – where grass is cut younger and more frequently as a way of improving milk from forage – Volac scientist Dr Mark Leggett said new farm-based Ecosyl research had examined the potential of multi-cut to deliver extra milk. Results confirmed that grass from a five-cut system was indeed more nutritious than from a more traditional three-cut approach – with an average digestibility (D value) of 72.7 versus 69.7, and delivering 0.5 MJ/kg more energy. Crude protein content was also almost 3% higher.

Spring tips offered to help hybrid barley growers after tough winter Be timely with fertiliser applications to hybrid barley this season, breeder Syngenta is urging
B
e timely with fertiliser applications to hybrid barley this season, breeder Syngenta is urging as part of a checklist to help growers maintain the crop’s high yield potential after the difficult winter. Early spring nitrogen is always important to ‘feed’ the crop’s vigorous growth, says Syngenta seeds technical manager, Paul Roche. But with this season’s potential for backward crops with reduced tiller numbers after the wet winter, ensuring that sufficient nitrogen is available early, so that active growth is not held back, will be particularly important, he notes. “Clearly, fertilisers need to be applied within industry regulations and according to FACTS qualified advice and local conditions,” says Mr Roche. “However, a typical programme would be to start by applying 30% of the total nitrogen dose for the season as soon as conditions are suitable in early spring during tillering, at about GS25. This would be followed by 50% of the total dose at, or just before GS31, and the final 20% some 2-3 weeks after that, typically by the end of April. “If these splits aren’t possible, then applying 50% of the total dose at the first timing and 50% at the second timing is an alternative. But avoid
16 | AgriNews | March 2020
late nitrogen applications because there will be a risk of stimulating secondary tillers.” In black-grass situations, Mr Roche says Syngenta trials have shown early nitrogen applications are essential for maximising the crop’s blackgrass suppression – with both these programmes, of either 30:50:20 or 50:50:0, having performed well. “Fertiliser applications should be avoided when soils are snow-covered, frozen hard, waterlogged or deeply cracked,” adds Mr Roche, “Care is also required on sloping ground adjacent to watercourses.” Other factors in Syngenta’s hybrid barley checklist this year include being aware that leaf emergence and node growth stages may not match, says Syngenta hybrid barley manager, Mark Bullen, and correcting any rooting or stem strength deficiencies following the wet winter. “Winter barley crops, in general, that were drilled late or that have sat in waterlogged soils over winter will be at risk of poor root growth,” explains Mr Bullen. “Also, a peculiarity of late-planted winter barley is increased risk of stem weakness. This happens because late crops try to catch up by growing rapidly, producing thinner stems that
are more prone to lodging or brackling below the ear. “Both rooting and stem strength can be targeted with the correct plant growth regulator (PGR) programme. Our guidance is to consider a low dose of Moddus + chlormequat at GS30, primarily to promote rooting; followed by a repeat at GS31-32 to shorten and strengthen stems; and a later PGR to reduce final straw height. “With risks of fast growth in late crops, it will also be important to check fields regularly to stay on top of spray timings. Plants should be dissected to identify the correct leaves have emerged when timing fungicides. With hybrid barley’s large flag leaves, a well-timed T2 fungicide is important. As well as controlling disease, the fungicide Elatus Era at T2 has also been seen to reduce brackling in barley. This could be particularly useful where there are risks of weak stems in fast-growing, late-drilled crops this year.” Among the various disease risks to watch out for in barley this season, Mr Bullen says mildew can take a bigger toll in small, backward barley crops, and Ramularia is especially important to prevent rather than attempting to cure.

Test developed to quickly evaluate disease reponse in chickens
The system could help breeders breed birds for an increased disease resistance

and help manage disease for producers of the world’s most popular meat.
A method to quickly and accurately evaluate disease response in chickens has been developed by UK researchers. Samples from hundreds of chickens can be tested simultaneously using the cost-effective approach, according to Roslin Institute and poultry breeding firm Aviagen. The approach can determine individual birds’ likely response to common poultry infections, they say. Dominika Borowska, of the Roslin Institute, said: "This method offers a route to gathering information on breeding stock which will be useful to farmers and industry. "The results could be combined with other data, such as animals’ weight, to allow informed breeding decisions." The system, based on blood immune cells tests, could help poultry breeders to breed for disease resistance 18 | AgriNews | March 2020
bacteria, fungi and parasites. They tested whether exposure to microbes normally present on farms would trigger an increase or decrease in the genes’ activity, in order to fight infection. Researchers tested immune cells from blood samples from chickens living on farms and from birds raised in facilities designed to be free of disease.
Researchers say their method could be applied to aid research into animals’ responses to a range of immune challenges. They developed their method using polymerase chain reaction – an established tool that replicates samples of DNA to create sufficient material for testing. Samples exposed to microbes were replicated to determine their response. Scientists used the approach to examine the behaviour of 89 genes that have previously been shown to be linked to chickens’ immune response to viruses,
The results showed that chickens in farm settings, which were exposed to more potentially harmful microbes, had higher expression levels of immune genes available for protein production. This outcome indicated that the genes selected together with the method are useful for highlighting the immune response. Insights into birds’ likely response to disease could enable healthier, more productive flocks, scientists say. The study was published in PLOS ONE. It was supported by Aviagen and the European Union Horizon 2020 programme.
NFU to lead food standards rally in Westminster
Hundreds of farmers from across the country will gather in London in March to joint he NFU in a rallying call to Government
H
undreds of farmers from across the country will gather in London in March to join the NFU in a rallying call to Government, urging them to commit that future UK trade policy will not allow imports of food produced to standards that would be illegal in the UK. The mass rally will bring together farmers, consumer representatives and experts in animal welfare and the environment, in a show of unity backing the future of British farming and underlining the role farmers play in supplying the nation with safe, traceable and affordable food and protecting our countryside. They are in agreement that British farming’s world-leading standards must be safeguarded in future trade deals. The event will take place on March 25 at the Queen Elizabeth II Centre in Westminster,
London. NFU President Minette Batters said: “This year is absolutely pivotal for the future of our country, our farmers and the food on our plates. Nothing will determine this more than how the Government shapes trade deals with the EU and other countries around the world. “This event is about bringing together people from across British business who acknowledge and value the importance of food and farming. They are crystal clear that the Government must hold the line that they will uphold British farming’s high standards in trade deals, and crucially they must hold imports entering the country to that same standard. “Failure to do so risks undermining British food production and our own domestic farming industry.
We share the Government’s ambitions to deliver more for the environment, but in doing so, we must not offshore our food production to those parts of the world who do not share our values and standards. “This is an opportunity for hundreds of people to come together and make their views clear that the Government must not sacrifice British farming on the altar of free trade and we will be inviting MPs to attend to hear that message first hand. “British farming can be one of the leading lights of postBrexit Britain if the Government chooses to become a global leader in championing sustainable, climate-friendly food that our farmers produce here. Farmers across the country are ready to rise to that challenge and we stand ready to work with the Government on that journey.”

Slower-growing chickens have improved meat quality, study says
The study shows that fast-growing breeds are potentially wasteful with farmers facing the loss of up to nearly half of their flock condition known as wooden breast, compared to just 1% of the slower growing breed. The RSPCA, which commissioned the study, said that conventional production with fast-growing breeds is 'potentially very wasteful' for farmers.
T
he study shows that fast-growing breeds are potentially wasteful with farmers facing the loss of up to nearly half of their flock due to increased mortality and culling Producing meat from slowergrowing chickens could significantly reduce mortality and improve meat quality, new research suggests. The study compared the health, welfare and production characteristics of the three fastest-growing broiler breeds used most extensively worldwide with a slower-growing, higherwelfare breed.
20 | AgriNews | March 2020
The charity's Kate Parkes said: “Our research shows that fastgrowing birds are significantly more likely to produce poorer quality meat, through conditions known as white striping and wooden breast. “However, birds with poor leg health are not always culled, and meat with white striping and wooden breast is still sold to consumers. The first of its kind research showed that up to 49% of faster-growing birds could die or should be culled due to welfare issues such as lameness. This compares to 16 percent of the slower growing birds, the study, carried out by Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC), shows. It also highlights that up to 78% of the fast-growing birds were likely to have poor quality meat with white striping, compared to 10% for the slower-growing breed. And up to 23% had a
"Therefore, the cost of ‘standard’ chicken meat is being kept artificially low due to some of these issues not being adequately addressed. "As such, the rearing of fastgrowing breeds seems to be a false economy, as well as presenting a serious welfare issue," she said. It comes as the government looks to link post-Brexit farm support payments with environmental and animal welfare outcomes.

This year the awards took place at The Boiler Shop in Newcastle and recognises the best and brightest dealers across the UK Isuzu UK recently (last week) announced their Dealers of the Year at their annual awards ceremony. This year the awards took place at The Boiler Shop in Newcastle and recognises the best and brightest dealers across the UK who provide a top service to all of Isuzu’s customers. In addition to the awards, many dealer staff were accredited as Pick-Up Professionals at the ceremony after completing their training programme. The PickUp Professionals accreditation allows staff to become specialists in Pick-Ups and well versed in specifying bespoke trucks to meet customers’ needs, however unique they may be. The awards were presented by Isuzu UK Managing Director, William Brown, Donna Jeffrey, Isuzu Dealer Training Manager and Alan Able, Isuzu Head of Sales. William Brown commented “Congratulations to all the nominated and winning dealers on their amazing achievements. Plus, a huge well done to the Isuzu network on their commitment and efforts to make 2019 a real success for Isuzu. 2020 looks to be even more successful with amazing offers and an exciting new model; it will be a great year for the whole Isuzu family.” Full list of Awards & Winners:
