SW Hire raises over £16,000 for local charities

Chippenham, Wiltshire based SW Hire has raised £16,181.50 for two local charities following its inaugural Open Day and Charity Ball. It was the first event of its kind for the Wiltshire hirer, and md Simon Williams said he was over-whelmed by support from agricultural and construction machinery suppliers, and customers from all over the country. “The SW Hire Charity Ball was a huge success, and was attended by 390 guests and sponsors,” explained Simon. “All those who bought tickets to the Ball enjoyed a great three course meal ahead of an evening of music and entertainment, plus an auction of fabulous prizes that had been donated to help raise

4 | March 2018

money for our chosen charities.” Cheffins auctioneer Martin Millard was on-hand during the event, and using his time-honed skills, he helped to raise over £6,000 during the evening’s auction. All monies raised are being shared between the Wiltshire Air Ambulance near Calne, and Dorothy House Hospice Care near Bath – both charities have, in one way or another, helped the SW Hire team and people that it knows. “We all know – or have been involved with – both charities,” said Simon. “And being able to host a great event to raise money for these two worthwhile

charities, has been extremely rewarding.” Prior to the Charity Ball getting underway, the SW Hire Open Day saw over 200 visitors pass through the gates to see the latest agricultural and construction machinery and equipment available for nationwide hire for the 2018 season. In addition to a pig roast and hot drinks, visitors had the chance to donate money from taking part at an electronic clay shoot, and also competing against the clock using a mini excavator to transfer ducks of different sizes from one makeshift pond to another.

The National Sprayer Testing Scheme Ian Foreman - NSTS manager Testing of pesticide application equipment and fertiliser spreaders Ian Foreman Since 26th November 2016 it became a legal requirement for all pesticide application equipment to be tested and the delegated body in the UK is the National Sprayer Testing Scheme (NSTS As well as the larger crop sprayers the obligation includes granular applicators and slug pellet applicators, but also includes weed wipers, seed treatment equipment and boom sprayers 3 metres or less to name a few. The requirement does not only apply to machines working in the agricultural sector but now includes horticulture and amenity, so the sprayers we see working on golf courses or in streets and parks all now must be tested. Sprayers are tested to the European standard EN 16122, introduced by us in February last year and now includes some additional checks, including the electronic controller where fitted. Although not a legal requirement spreaders require a calibration certificate for Crop Assurance purposes and the ideal way to achieve this would be to have it NSTS tested. As well as checking the condition of the machine, a tray test will be carried out to check the spread pattern and adjustments made if required.

of variation (CofV) over 10% will influence yield and potentially quality and this effect could be reduced by having your machine tested. Machine examiners aim to achieve a CofV below 10% for all fertilisers tested through your spreader and it is recommended to have all products tested, or at least the nitrogen or nitrogen/ sulphur products. There are over 240 test centres around the UK and 690 examiners providing sprayer testing. Over 100 examiners are qualified to test slug pellet applicators and many of these can test fertiliser spreaders too. All machine examiners hold City & Guilds qualifications for the relevant machines they can test so machine owners can be confident their equipment

New Holland presents NHdrive autonomous T4.110F Vineyard tractor

Ready for field pilot project deployment at E & J. Gallo Winery the NH Drive T4.110F New Holland Agriculture is partnering with E. & J. Gallo Winery, the largest familyowned winery in the world, and loyal customer of New Holland specialty tractors, in a pilot project testing its NHDrive autonomous technology applied to T4.110F vineyard tractors. This collaborative pilot program is focused on gathering agronomic and operator feedback on the use of this technology in everyday vineyard activities, with the ultimate objective of delivering autonomous solutions that are driven by the real-world requirements of winegrowers. The pilot program is the latest step in the New Holland Autonomous Vehicle Program and its exploration of the various applications that can benefit the most from this technology. The Brand unveiled its NHDrive™ autonomous solution in 2016 at the Farm Progress Show, and to date, has previewed it on the T7 Heavy Duty and T8 tractor ranges to illustrate possible row crop applications. The new pilot program with the T4.110F demonstrates that New Holland’s autonomous solution is applicable to the brand’s entire range of tractors, from high horsepower row crop all the way through to its specialty ranges. Carlo Lambro, New Holland Agriculture Brand President, explained: “Sustainability

12 | March 2018

and innovation are in New Holland’s DNA; that’s how we help our customers to farm efficiently and profitably today – and anticipate the way their needs will change. We believe that specialty operations, and in particular those in the vineyard environment, could significantly benefit from the introduction of autonomous technology, in terms of productivity and sustainability. Our partner in the pilot program, E. & J. Gallo Winery, shares our commitment to innovation and sustainability in viticulture, as well as our objective of providing an autonomous solution that will benefit winegrowers around the world.” The pilot program is taking place in an E. & J. Gallo Winery vineyard in California, USA, with T4.110F tractors fitted with NHDrive autonomous technology. During the course of the initial research and development program, further progress has been made into the integration of the various component parts – specifically the sensing and perception elements and the signal receivers. As such, the T4.110F NHDrive maintains its

sleek overall silhouette. This pilot is focused on a full range of vineyard maintenance and crop production tasks, which will provide feedback to further develop these activities during autonomous operation. These often repetitive applications, represent a broad cross-section of activities that are undertaken in vineyards, and are also representative of those carried out by the wider agricultural community. The data generated during the pilot will enrich the New Holland Autonomous Vehicle Program, providing realworld detail on the full range of possible automated and autonomous applications. These include Operator Assisted Autonomy, where the NHDrive supports the operator in the cab, Supervised Autonomy, where the operator will be in the field and supervises unmanned vehicles, and ultimately Full Autonomy, with no local supervision.

Pottinger continuity with new management team

Heinz Pottinger announced in mid-January 2018 that he will move from operative management of the company to the supervisory board promoting important key values such as transparency, credibility, sustainability and team spirit. Working together constructively is the declared objective to ensure the continuity of the company.

The new Managing Directors were confirmed at the general meeting on 26 January 2018: the experienced five Managing Directors share a commitment and pleasure in driving the development of the company forward through expanding production capacity, digitalisation and ongoing internationalisation to generate sales growth. When Klaus Pöttinger stepped down from operative management, three new Managing Directors were appointed by the supervisory board. Together with Heinz Pöttinger they have continued to steer the company on course for success. This proven team will remain in place to ensure continuity in furthering this extremely successful development: Gregor Dietachmayr is responsible for Sales and Marketing and has been appointed as the Spokesperson

for the Management Team. Jörg Lechner continues to be responsible for Production at all manufacturing plants Grieskirchen (AT), Bernburg (DE) and Vodnany (CZ) - and Procurement for the whole company group. Dr. Markus Baldinger is Managing Director for Research & Development and Digitalisation. The business divisions that have been managed by Heinz Pöttinger so far have now been made the responsibility of the new Managing Directors: Herbert Wagner takes over Human Resources & IT and Wolfgang Moser is now responsible for Finance, Controlling and Corporate Quality. PÖTTINGER was founded as an agricultural engineering company in 1871 and stands for fair partnerships and reliable, sincere business relationships. The dynamic new Management Team of the family-owned company is committed to

Shraddha Kaul, Public Affairs and Public Relations manager for BPC

Comment: No one wants their chickens dying on the way to the slaughter house

By Shraddha Kaul, Public Affairs and Public Relations Manager for the British Poultry Council Anyone reading one of the recent media reports about over a million chickens dying a year while being transported to slaughterhouses can feel alarmed. As someone who genuinely cares about our birds, I was naturally disappointed to find out that things aren’t going as well as I would ideally want them to. Instead of being overwhelmed, I think it’s important to try and understand the problem in a bit more detail and put things into perspective. Each day, millions of birds are transported from farms to processing plants. They are moved from their comfortable space on the farm into crates, to be transported to

14 | March 2018

the slaughterhouse. Some of these birds die in transit. This can be down to anything from heat stress to over-filled transportation crates or failure to adapt to prevailing weather conditions. While we’re talking about a very small fraction of a percentage of birds reported ‘dead on arrival’, (four to seven birds out of a lorry load of 6000), it is a level that our sector has been striving to reduce. We have pushed for a revised statutory code for the welfare of chickens, we are looking at ways to improve the health and welfare of birds across all our production systems, and are developing guidance designed to improve welfare reporting at the slaughterhouse. Our ongoing collaboration with the FSA and Defra has ensured that the data measuring health

and welfare of birds is in the public domain, so it can be scrutinised and challenged, and that is something we welcome. It’s important for our consumers to know that poultry meat businesses are working hard towards improving bird welfare during transit. We want to ensure that our birds are transported in comfort and we are doing everything we can to reduce the number of birds that die. We have looked at ways to improve airflow to dissipate heat and prevent suffocation. Some of our plants have built airconditioned sheds where trucks can be parked, which helps prevent the build-up of heat. We are constantly looking for innovative solutions including ways to redesign plants, so that we can unload large numbers of birds in the shortest possible time.

Effective Poultry House Cleaning Steve Birchall Poultry House Cleaning Services High pressure powerwashing, disinfectant and cleaners With the poultry industry experiencing more than its fair share of problems over the past 12 months or so no poultry producer can afford to hinder flock performance by allowing a build up of micro organisms. Even low disease levels drag profits back and skimping on the cleaning routine between flocks is false economy, says Lancashire based cleaning specialist Steve Birchall. “There is no opportunity these days to rest buildings between flocks. Turnaround times are tight and it is, therefore, vital that buildings are not only throughly cleaned but disinfected as well, and if there has been a problem

the cleaning and disinfection treatment should take account of it” says Steve, who has been operating a nationwide poultry contract shed cleaning business for over 30 years. His three teams are equipped to carry out whatever cleaning regime producers require and he suggests a good standard routine for anyone who wants the best safeguard. After the litter has been removed, the building and any equipment either retained inside or taken out should be power washed at about 2,500 psi with a combined cleaner/ sanitizer/deodorizer, which should remove some of the 80% of micro organisms at this stage.

“Older buildings are often more difficult to clean than modern ones”, Steve says, “However, if you are going to do the job at all, then it is worth doing properly and you have to take sufficient time, particularly in breeder or laying units where nest boxes and equipment have been in place for 12 months or more. Broiler units with a six or seven day turnaround are less difficult. However, people who prefer to do what is a rather unpleasant job themselves often get rather jaded before it has been done properly. If there are other enterprises on the farm, they have to keep breaking off to do other work.

Case IH adds an innovative soil sensor for controlling tillage equipment For controlling tillage equipment and seed drills to its product portfolio with low fuel consumption thanks to variable depth Low fuel consumption thanks to variable depth guidance / sensor-supported adjusting of the working depth / higher work efficiency thanks to a more uniform working speed / less strain on the driver / complete ISOBUS compatible soil sensor / ISOBUS task controller for tillage equipment The resource-friendly tillage of agricultural soils is the central production factor in modern agriculture and has been a longstanding Case IH key competency. Combining a modern sensor system with the advantages of Case IH tractors allows farmers to considerably reduce their use of inputs while at the same time increasing their working efficiency. At Agritechnica 2015, the Topsoil Mapper was presented as the first soil sensor to control tilling machines and was awarded DLG’s silver Innovation Award. The technology allows for soil-optimized and automated control of hydraulic tillage equipment via ISOBUS. Case IH is actively working with the Austrian Technology provider Geoprospectors GmbH to facilitate the development of a long term soil sensing technology partnership. As a result, Case IH is collaborating with the Geoprospectors GmbH’s Topsoil Mapper while also taking over the exclusive distribution of Geoprospectors’

16 | March 2018

products in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Hungary, the Republic of Moldova, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Switzerland, Ukraine.

This way, it can adjust tillage according to the actual soil and weather conditions” says Michael Pregesbauer, CEO of Geoprospectors GmbH.

Sensor-supported depth guidance The heterogeneity of agricultural soils requires different working depths during tillage in order to make up for subplot-specific differences in type of soil, compression and water content. Ultimately, it is only possible to measure these parameters with the required accuracy and reliability in real time, as they vary greatly according to the season.

First complete ISOBUS solution in soil tillage With the Topsoil Mapper, Case IH dealers now offer the world’s first completely integrated ISOBUS solution in the field of soil tillage. In addition to the sensor, a complete package includes an ISOBUS job computer with implement control as a retrofit kit for any hydraulic tillage equipment. The Topsoil Mapper can either be ordered as sensor components or as a special front weight solution. The latter is primarily of interest when the front linkage requires a counterweight for tilling.

Over many years of development, Geoprospectors GmbH has developed a sensor system capable of capturing the relevant soil parameters in real time and sending this data to the tilling machine’s computer in order to control the depth guidance. To do so, the sensor is installed in front of the tractor. The collected measured values are directly converted into control commands for tillage by the sensor’s computer and then transmitted to the machine’s job computer via ISOBUS.

“To achieve maximum customer acceptance, it is crucial that the new system can be integrated into operators’ existing work processes. This is why Case IH relies on the Topsoil Mapper’s ISOBUS compatibility to ensure the best possible integration into existing operations for its customers” says Maximilian Birle, Precision Farming Manager for Germany.

“The Topsoil Mapper is the first soil sensor that can be directly integrated into Mike Garwood agricultural implements and Shelleys Barn, Shelleys Lane East Worldham, Alton is also capable Hampshire, GU34 3AQ of controlling tilling machines t: 01420 844 58 www.mikegarwoodltd.co.uk in real time.

Landini tractors - New Rex 4 Series launched at LAMMA 2018

All-new Landini Rex 4 Series tractors were launched to farmers at the LAMMA 2018 show. The all-new Landini Rex 4 Series tractors will make their UK farming debut at the LAMMA show in January, representing a new range of compact but powerful and durable power units suited to applications where space is limited. The 95hp Rex 4-100 F will be on display from a line-up spanning 69-111hp and available in different configurations to suit a number of applications. The ‘F’ version, for

example, can be configured to no more than 1.3m wide so it has potential as a heavy-duty yard and cubicle house scraping tractor, while the ultra-narrow version that can be set up barely 1m wide is designed primarily for vineyard work. There are seven power outputs altogether and the new transmissions available provide a threespeed powershift option for the first time, enabling operators to quickly change ground speed when towing or working soil-engaging implements without losing momentum. Fingertip power shuttle shifting between forward To find your local dealer please visit: and reverse www.landini.agriargouk.co.uk also makes life easier and more Wharfedale Tractors comfortable Riffa Business Park for the Harrogate Road operator – as Pool in Wharfedale does the new North Yorkshire, LS21 2XB front axle suspension t: 01132 841117 as it cushions the front end of the tractor www.wharfedale-tractors.co.uk when passing

over humps and hollows. The tractors are available with an open platform or a new cab design with a virtually flat floor – which contrasts with the more common ‘legs astride’ seating position of tractors like this because of the transmission tunnel. Power comes from a new 2.9-litre compact fourcylinder engine providing similar outputs to the new models’ predecessors but there is additional torque at the lower end of the rev range to help lift performance. New Eco pto gearing and Eco 40kph transmission options help fuel consumption by lowering engine speeds in work and during transport, while larger fuel tanks reduce fill-up frequency, especially on the versions that get a 90-litre tank – almost 40% up on the previous design. Landini distributor AgriArgo UK & Ireland says the tractors are likely to end up working in horticulture and orchards, and on farms where the power intense compact size make them attractions in space-limited situations.

Young farmers win big for UK in European ‘Olympics’

Four young farmers from across the UK have dominated the European ‘Ovinpiades’ Young Shepherd Competition in Paris UK young shepherds take gold, silver and bronze in European "Olympics"

Ireland competitor Iain Wilson, a 21-year-old from Larne, County Antrim, was third.

The farmers were required to demonstrate sheep husbandry and industry knowledge in quizzes and practical tests, including use of electronic identification (EID), sheep movements and finished lamb assessments.

Not content with just taking the gold, silver and bronze places, the entire UK team was placed, with Scottish representative Farquahar Renwick, of Ullapool, Rossshire, coming sixth.

The winner of the whole competition was 18-year-old Dafydd Davies, from Bala, Gwynedd, a student at Glynllifon College, North Wales. He qualified for the European competition following success in the National Sheep Association (NSA) Next Generation Shepherds’ Competition, and gets practice working with more than 1,100 Welsh Mountain ewes on his family farm. Mr Davies said the competition was "challenging", but he was "really pleased" to win the European section. He said: “I am now looking forward to competing in the final of the NSA Next Generation Shepherds’ Competition at the NSA Sheep Event in Worcestershire in July.” 'Credit to the industry' Representing England, 24-year-old Robert Walker of Clitheroe, Lancashire, took second place, and Northern

18 | March 2018

Phil Stocker, NSA Chief Executive, said the young farmers are a "credit" themselves and the sheep industry. “It is heartening for the UK sheep sector to know we have such enthusiasm and skills coming through for the future,” Mr Stocker said. “The NSA Next Generation programme is all about encouraging individuals such as these, and we are proud of the opportunity NSA Next Generation Shepherds’ Competitions offer at a regional, national, European and international level.”

Ovinpiades Young Shepherds All nine of the NSA’s regional sheep events run an NSA Next Generation Shepherds’ Competition. Two people qualify at each of these for the biennial UK final, and top placed competitors from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are also selected for the European and International finals, which tend to fall every four years depending on the host country.

Variable chamber round balers adapted for 2018

Kuhn Farm Machinery has updated its popular range of VB variable chamber round balers, with four new models now available in the UK The new VB range consists of four main models: the VB 3160 and VB 3165 (1.20 x 0.80 x 1.60m bales), and the VB 3190 and VB 3195 (1.20 x 0.80 x 1.85m) bales, all of which offer net or twine binding and are suitable for baling a range of wet and dry crops: from hay and straw (5-20% moisture), to haylage (18-35% moisture) and silage (35-80% moisture).

OPTIFEED: uses a 2.30m pickup and patented integral rotor and side augers to achieve a high input capacity from a reduced power requirement. The rotor tines are manufactured from Hardox® wear-resistant steel for improved longevity. KUHN’s DROPFLOOR and hydraulic rotor disengagement system enables blockages to be cleared quickly and effortlessly.

All models are equipped with progressive density baling chambers which use two chamber rollers, a starter roller and five endless baling belts to produce evenly shaped bales. Belt pressure increases as the bale grows, and can be adjusted from the tractor cab to compensate for variations in crop type quality and to maintain a constant density as the bale is formed.

OPTICUT 14: uses a 2.30m pick-up and patented integral cutting rotor with 14 knives to provide a cutting length of 70mm. The cutting rotor is manufactured from Hardox® wear-resistant steel for improved longevity. KUHN’s DROPFLOOR and hydraulic rotor disengagement system enables blockages to be cleared quickly and effortlessly.

The VB 3160 and VB 3190 are available with KUHN’s OPTIFLOW, OPTIFEED or OPTICUT 14 intake rotors. The VB 3165 and VB 3195 are available with KUHN’s OPTIFEED, OPTICUT 14 or OPTICUT 23 intake rotors.

OPTICUT 23: uses a 2.30 m pick-up and patented integral cutting rotor with 23 knives to provide a cutting length of 45mm. The cutting rotor is manufactured from Hardox® wear-resistant steel for improved longevity. KUHN’s DROPFLOOR and hydraulic rotor disengagement system enables blockages to be cleared quickly and effortlessly.

OPTIFLOW: uses a 2.10m pick-up and non-restricted, open throat intake rotor for handling heavy crops. A top roller pre-compacts the intake feed enabling higher working rates. 22 | March 2018

Each variant within the new VB range is powered by a simple

and sturdy drive system which uses just three main chains, each of which are designed to have a low maintenance requirement and can be fitted with automatic chain lubrication as an option. All VB variants can be supplied with, and controlled by, KUHN’s new ISOBUS terminals, the 5.4 inch (14.3cm) CCI 50 and the 12.1 inch (30.5cm) CCI 1200, both of which can be used to control any ISOBUS-ready machine. The CCI 50 is a touchscreen terminal but also has 12 back-lit function keys, an auto-brightness sensor, and ports for video input, USB data transfer, GPS antenna input and biomass sensor input. The CCI 1200 features a large touchscreen display which can be used either horizontally or vertically and is easy to view in direct sunlight. The unit’s flexible layout display can be configured to suit the individual operator’s preferences or machine’s requirements and features a split-screen function which enables the operator to view and control two machines in tandem. The option of displaying several mini-view windows also enables the operator to monitor multiple parameters at once.
