JCB: One billion in balances

One billion in balances as industry counts on JCB finance

A lender which finances the purchase of JCB products in the UK has a billion reasons to celebrate - literally

J

CB Finance - one of the biggest lenders to the construction and agricultural industry in the UK - is celebrating the milestone news that total lending has reached an alltime high. For the first time in its history the amount currently being lent to fund the purchase of machines has broken through the £1 billion barrier. And for the firm’s 100 employees it’s a real reason to celebrate because bosses have treated them to a weekend away for two to mark the milestone which comes 10 months before the company’s 50th anniversary. JCB Finance was set up in February 1970 under the name JCB Credit and has expanded massively from humble beginnings with JCB Chairman Lord Bamford as one of its original Directors. Today JCB Finance provides hire purchase and leasing options for UK business customers and supports the JCB UK dealer network and has facilitated the purchase of more than 250,000 JCB machines over the past 49 years. Including money 4 | AgriNews

loaned to acquire other plant and vehicles, JCB Finance has lent more than £13 billion to UK businesses to help them grow and invest. JCB Finance MD Paul Jennings said: “To reach £1 billion in balances is an amazing achievement which would not have been accomplished without a huge team effort. We are here to help JCB customers buy their equipment and this milestone is a measure of the hard work put in by everyone involved. It’s also a very good indicator that confidence levels in our sector remain resilient and as a measure of our success, it puts JCB Finance amongst the elite in our industry.” JCB Chairman Lord Bamford said: “When JCB Finance was founded in 1970 JCB manufactured just over 4,000 machines and even then there was a very real need from our customers for help with finance. The growth of JCB Finance has mirrored the growth of JCB and our success is very much intertwined; JCB’s development and

market leadership in the UK over many decades simply would not have been possible without JCB Finance. The team should be very proud of this achievement.” Alan Wilson is a Director of the civil engineering, excavation and haulage business L & W Wilson (Endmoor) Ltd, a family firm which has used JCB Finance to purchase its JCB machines since the 1980s. He said: “I congratulate JCB Finance on reaching such a tremendous milestone but such an achievement should come as no surprise. During the recession JCB Finance was one of the few companies that you could rely on to support your business. Then, when some customers weren’t paying on time, you needed to be able to raise finance to guarantee cash flow. The banks were reluctant to lend beyond what you had but JCB was prepared to refinance other plant so that we could raise cash at a competitive rate. Quite simply, JCB supported British business at a time when others would not.”

Machinery innovation offers efficiency and forage quality of livestock farmers Significant opportunities to boost production from forage are possible through use of some of the more advanced grassland technology

S

ignificant opportunities to boost production from forage are possible through use of some of the more advanced grassland machinery technology available, according to speakers at an open event staged by Malpas Tractors at its Holmes Chapel depot. At the company’s ‘Quality Forage Solutions’ evening this week, visitors received a technical overview of an award-winning film binding system that is available on the latest baler wrapper combinations; this system uses wrap instead of net binding, thereby improving bale conservation quality whilst simultaneously reducing the burden of recycling. Film binding technology, patented by KUHN and available on models in their range, received the accolade of a silver medal at the recent LAMMA Show Livestock Innovation Awards. In addition, visitors had the opportunity to see KUHN’s GA 15131 four-rotor rake, a machine with a 14.7 metre

8 | AgriNews

working width designed for fast and effective grass harvesting. With all four rotors powered by the headstock-mounted hydraulic drive unit, operators have the option to increase front rotor speed by up to 20% when working in lighter crops, ensuring optimum swath formation. Rotor height is hydraulically adjustable, and each rotor is mounted on four pivoting, large diameter wheels for excellent ground following. Individual rotors can be lowered parallel to the ground, even on rough terrain, so that the tines don’t meet the soil – thereby preventing the crop from being contaminated. Speaking at the event, KUHN product specialist Katie Calcutt highlighted the role of new grassland machinery technology in the ongoing quest to boost production from forage. “Innovation in machinery technology is creating opportunities for livestock farmers to improve the efficiency of forage conservation and increase the

quality of the silage,” she said. “Speed of operation is important, of course, to ensure grass is harvested in a timely fashion, but it’s also essential to maximise the quality of the crop. Innovations that optimise swath formation and minimise the risks of soil contamination, such as we see on the new four-rotor rakes, are vital to keep forage quality as high as possible. “Film binding is a new development that combines efficiency and increased forage quality. We’re seeing improved nutritional value in film bound bales. In addition, overcoming the downtime of having to separate net from wrap in order to meet recycling requirements is a great bonus for farmers.” The ‘Quality Forage Solutions’ event was organised by Malpas Tractors in conjunction with KUHN Farm Machinery.

Lighter handpiece unleashes sharing potential In its capacity as the importer and distributor of Heiniger shearing equipment in the UK and reduces hand strain whilst also providing superior manoeuvrability, control and grip.

In its capacity as the importer and distributor of Heiniger shearing equipment in the UK, Allflex is pleased to announce the availability of a new and improved version of the popular ICON sheep shearing handpiece which enables professional sheep shearers to unleash their true potential. The new ICON FX handpiece is the result of countless hours of research, development and testing. It features an ergonomically enhanced, slimmer barrel which improves balance and operator comfort

10 | AgriNews

The new ICON FX handpiece is significantly lighter than the existing ICON Cyclone (1190g versus 1300g) which was used by Kiwi, Rowland Smith in 2017 to break the Eight Hour Strongwool World Ewe Shearing Record during which sheared an average of one ewe every 44.72 seconds to shear a total of 644 sheep in eight hours. “The ICON FX requires less effort to operate and is faster to start and stop than previous models in the ICON range,” explains Selwyn Williams, Research and Development Manager for Heiniger. “That makes it easier and less tiring to shear a large

number of sheep and enables professional shearers to maximise their daily tallies.” The ICON FX is compatible with pin or worm driven shearing plants including Heiniger’s own EVO and ONE plants, plus a range of alternatives from third party manufacturers. The new handpiece will be a feature of a series of shearing workshops being held across the UK in May. These freeto-attend events have been designed to provide practical advice to young shearers, semi-professional and professional contract shearers and sheep farmers, with each event focusing on several key elements including selecting and maintaining the right handpiece, plant and cutting blades, and grinding and sharpening combs and cutters for optimum performance and lifespan. The demonstrations will be taking place at the following venues:

New AEA President is Adrian Winnett, managing director for Argo Tractors

Adrian Winnett, Managing Director for Argo Tractors operations in the UK and Ireland

drian Winnett, Managing Director of Argo Tractors operations in the UK and Ireland, has been elected President of AEA, the organisation for agricultural and horticultural engineering companies in Great Britain, after serving two years as chairman of the AEA Farm Equipment Council. “It’s an honour I couldn’t have imagined when I left school and started repairing tractors at my father’s equipment dealership in Towcester,” he said. “And, frankly, it wasn’t something I could foresee at any other time

during my career in tractor and farm equipment sales.” In September 2018, after around 10 years running the Amazone farm equipment business in the UK, Adrian Winnett was appointed Managing Director for the UK and Irish markets by Landini manufacturer Argo Tractors with plans to recruit a larger team to support an expanded dealer network as a driver for increased sales.

“Dealer networks are restructuring as more manufacturers go ‘full line’ in the hope of securing more business from their dealerships,” he points out. “Argo remains focused on its core products – including Landini tractors from 43225hp – while emphasising its support for dealer To find your local dealer please visit: independence, www.landini.agriargouk.co.uk which enables them to decide Wharfedale Tractors on the other products they Riffa Business Park sell.”

As President of the AEA, his role will be to lead the management board while the farm equipment and

outdoor power equipment councils and specialist groups on manufacturing, training and education, chemical applications, sprayer testing, service management and allterrain vehicles focus on current issues and initiatives. “Consultation on proposed legislation as it impacts machinery and helping members interpret and implement new rules when they are introduced remain key functions of the AEA, along with the statistics and export services,” says,” Mr Winnett. “As our relationship with the rest of Europe and the world evolves, I think membership of the AEA by agricultural and outdoor power equipment companies has never been more important.” Speaking at the annual conference of AEA, he also called for the UK agricultural engineering industry to continue finding ways to retain and attract young talent, not just from within but also from outside the industry. “It is a terrible shame that beyond our own circle neither of the words ‘agriculture’ and ‘engineering’ resonate in terms of a career choice with the majority of young people," he said. “Yet we all know what challenging, fulfilling and rewarding opportunities there are in agriculture generally and in the agricultural and groundscare machinery sectors in particular.

Wanted: Dairy Case Studies on labour shortages

One of the biggest challenges facing the dairy sector is accessing labour on farm.

O

ne of the biggest challenges facing the dairy sector is accessing labour on farm.

The need for sufficiently skilled, permanent labour on farm is important to maintain animal welfare standards, ensure business viability, productivity and to reduce pressure on existing staff. The NFU are looking to produce several member case studies highlighting the issues shortage of labour can have on a dairy farm business. These case studies aim to raise awareness about the problem as well as feed into official evidence for our Immigration Bill submission. If you are a dairy farmer who has experienced labour shortages and would like to share your story, please get in touch with hannah.binns@nfu.org.uk

NFU launches Student & Young Farmer Ambassador Programme

The NFU has officially launched its Student & Young Farmer Ambassdor Programme which offers 8-12 young people to put their stamp on farming

T

he NFU has today officially launched its new Student & Young Farmer Ambassador Programme, which offers the chance for 8-12 young people to put their own stamp on the future of British farming as they represent the organisation for one year.

The ambassadors will be representing the NFU at various events over the course of 12 months, including the Lord Mayor’s Show, NFU Conference and a #StudentFarmer magazine trip.

NFU next generation forum chairman Simon Gadd said: “The Ambassador The programme is designed Programme is a fantastic opportunity for young to give the upcoming people, from both generation an opportunity farming and non-farming to build their knowledge and become an influential backgrounds, to get stuck part of the industry, all while in to an industry that is both receiving the core skills they incredibly challenging and need to promote themselves incredibly rewarding. and British farming. 20 | AgriNews

“With new technologies constantly changing the farming landscape and with Brexit on the horizon, it’s never been a more exciting time to think about the future of British farming. “I urge all students and young farmers with a vested interest in farming and rural affairs to apply, and experience whole new aspects of the agricultural industry.”

Global opportunities for organic expand as certifiers unite Organic certified OF&G has joined forces with global accreditor Control Union Uk to open and expand markets for UK organic food production

O

rganic certifier OF&G (Organic Farmers and Growers) has joined forces with global accreditor Control Union UK (CUUK) to open and expand markets for UK organic food production by offering certification on a global scale. “It’s an exciting development for OF&G, allowing us to build organic business opportunities not only in the UK, but in the EU and across the world through CUUK’s extensive accreditation portfolio and international reach,” says Roger Kerr, CEO at OF&G, who certify over half the organic land in the UK. Commenting on the new partnership, Franco Costantini, MD at CUUK, says uniting with OF&G aligns to their ambitions to expand the food assurance market in the UK and Ireland. “OF&G have over 20 years’ experience in organic certification and a long-standing presence in the UK. Alongside this, we offer an extended network of auditors, access to international markets and a diverse portfolio of accreditation programmes.”

Kerr said that with anticipated changes as a consequence of Brexit, the collaboration provides an opportunity to deliver organic certification and food safety assurance as efficiently and costeffectively as possible for UK and EU businesses, in particular those seeking export markets. “When OF&G operated standalone, if a business in another country wanted to certify to organic standards in the UK, we’d fly an inspector out. Now, because CUUK have ‘boots on the ground’ in numerous countries, the process becomes much simpler and certifications can be combined. “Vice-versa, if our licensees want to become certified with international organic schemes, such as the Japanese Agricultural Standard (JAS) or National Organic Program (NOP), then CUUK can help as they have the accreditations in place, alongside UK or EU regulation” said Kerr. Due to Brexit, the level of certification required to export food is increasing. “Not only do operators have

to deal with EU regulation, they now need to consider UK regulation in a postBrexit world. “With more regulation to contend with, not to mention the additional time and expense it incurs at every step in the food supply network, we want to help consolidate this process by certifying to EU and UK regulations simultaneously. Together with CUUK, we can make this happen.” The recent EU organic regulation (834/2007) put into law by Parliament ahead of Brexit provides some stability for the sector until December 2020. “However, we still don’t know what UK organic regulation will look like long-term and the uncertainty needs addressing. “OF&G continue to lobby Defra and and the EU Commission (via IFOAM EU) to ensure more contingencies are put in place to ensure the wheels of the industry can keep moving,” said Kerr.

NFU continues to petition for members affected by HS2 The NFU has petitioned on HS2 additional provisions for its members affected by Phase 2a of the project

T

he NFU has petitioned on HS2 additional provisions for its members affected by Phase 2a of the project, to enable farmers and growers to continue the day-today running of their farm businesses with minimal disruption. Giving evidence to the HS2 Select Committee on Phase 2a, the NFU raised concerns over particular issues, including: · A proposed temporary diversion route intended to be used by agricultural and construction traffic which would go past a primary school and through a town; · The lack of direct consultation on proposed overhead powerlines and the possibility of undergrounding as a first option; · Plans to use land, which is currently highlighted for temporary stockpiles, to take

22 | AgriNews

spoil waste on a permanent basis, which would result in more land being taken out of agricultural production. The NFU also asked for a general assurance to be given to farmers on borrow pits that where it has been highlighted that certain areas will not be worked, that this is guaranteed. As well as this, the NFU requested an assurance from HS2 that negotiations with farmers on the locations of pylons will take place within six months of the Select Committee concluding. The NFU raised a further query on a new HS2 assurance to the NFU, which states that farmers would be given three months’ notice before the date of entry for temporary possession, explaining that three months’ notice needs to be given before the calendar quarter of entry. NFU Vice President Stuart Roberts said: “While it’s

encouraging to hear the Select Committee acknowledge that there is a need for an alternative temporary diversion to be put in place to prevent agricultural and construction traffic going past a school, no more land should be taken to achieve this. “The NFU urges HS2 to consult with farmers as soon as possible about the location of pylons for overhead lines to provide certainty for farmers, and that it properly considers installing underground powerlines as a first option. “HS2 also needs to acknowledge that agricultural land should not be taken, especially on a permanent basis. It is essential that farmers and the land they work are taken into account throughout the whole HS2 process, enabling them to continue to run productive, profitable and competitive businesses.”

The all-new Ranger Diesel from Polaris: Durable. Dependable. Capable

Polaris has introduced the all-new Ranger Diesel for 2019, developed specifically for markets in Europe, Middle East, Africa, Australia and New Zealand Polaris has introduced the all-new RANGER Diesel for 2019, developed specifically for markets in Europe, Middle East, Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Debuting in dealerships this spring, the new RANGER Diesel redefines refinement with the introduction of a brand-new diesel engine and updated chassis, along with superior levels of comfort, handling and driving capabilities that make it even more durable, dependable and capable. Rodrigo Lourenco, Vice President and General Manager of Polaris Off-Road Vehicles EMEA, said: “We’re very excited to launch the new RANGER Diesel this year. We’ve taken the proven attributes of the existing RANGER Diesel model and upgraded almost every aspect so it’s tougher, more reliable and can tackle anything thrown its way. It’s the result of two years of research and development, fuelled by direct customer feedback and in-depth usage analysis; with a new engine and a new chassis, it is built for hard work.” Refined performance with the all-new diesel engine The new RANGER Diesel is made to perform to the highest standards for years 24 | AgriNews

to come. The all-new threecylinder Kubota diesel engine is the most powerful engine in its class, delivering 24.8 horsepower and 40.8 ft.lb of torque. Paired with more consistent power and better torque distribution for a smoother ride, the new engine offers a lower cost of ownership thanks to over 200 hours between service intervals, plus a longer filter life and less oil consumption. With the highest top speed in its class of 65kph, the RANGER DIESEL is built for the heavy-duty long haul. Enhanced ergonomics with the upgraded chassis. The exterior design captures the essence of RANGER, boasting an aggressive style with its all-new onepiece chassis. More rugged throughout with reduced flex, the new chassis design is even more robust for an improved ride. Internally, the RANGER Diesel has enhanced ergonomics for ultimate comfort; the wider chassis seats three people with plusher seats, increased storage, and more legroom to get in and out of the vehicle easily. With all improvements being the result of customer usage analysis and feedback, the new RANGER Diesel has been developed for less

engine noise in-cab and upgraded technology like a new digital gauge for a refined look and feel. Built for the job at hand with class-leading capabilities RANGER Diesel is built for the job at hand, and every job after that. With 1134kg of towing capacity and a 720kg payload capacity, ‘capable’ only scratches the surface. The RANGER Diesel also has the highest ground clearance in its class of 33cm – a 20% increase from its predecessor. True on-demand technology The new RANGER Diesel features on-demand allwheel drive (AWD), meaning all four wheels engage automatically when the vehicle needs more forward traction and reverts back to two-wheel drive when it doesn’t. A

lready considered an industry standard vehicle in the competitive Utility Vehicle market, the durable and popular Kawasaki MULE SX 4x4 now takes its place as part of the 2019 Utility Vehicle range with the benefit of fuel injection. Featuring a rugged and reliable 401cc single cylinder four-stroke petrol engine mated to continuously variable transmission (CVT) offering high, low, neutral and reverse ratios plus selectable 2WD/4WD, the addition of fuel injection now aids more efficient starting and running in

all conditions. Equipped with a dual mode differential and diff lock facility as standard, the MULE SX 4x4 FI inhabits a commanding position in the competitive small to mid-size class of the working vehicle market with a commendable 181kg (400lb) cargo bed capacity and the ability to tow 499kg (1100lb) using the optional tow hitch. Tight turns - thanks to the highly adaptable differential and compact dimensions allow the MULE SX 4x4 FI to perform at its best even in

environments where other vehicles can neither venture or find traction. And at just 133cm (52.6inches) wide and with a wheelbase of 177.8cm (70inches), the combination of manoeuvrability and hardworking credentials underpins the enviable MULE reputation. Lighting the darkness with halogen headlamps and weighing in at 468kg (1031.9lb), the 2019 MULE SX 4X4 FI looks set to extend the Kawasaki MULE legend offering even more convenience and versatility.

The utility of choice for many professionals such as farmers, gamekeepers and all grounds-care experts, the two machines at the top of the Kawasaki MULE series will carry the new name PRO for 2016.
