Ewe vaccination helps to limit the spread of Orf New grant funding available for computerised calf feeders Cattle producers have concerns over youngstock health The Midlands Machinery Show 21st/22nd November 2018 Automated spread pattern controller offers accuracy Vunerable group advice serves up strong egg sales Third of vets are considering leaving the profession

Ewe vaccination helps to limit the spread of Orf

It’s been a particularly bad year for orf in lambs but sheep producers struggling with the disease in their flock can improve by vaccinating

I

t’s been a particularly bad year for orf in lambs but sheep producers struggling with the disease in their flock can improve its control by vaccinating ewes well before housing for lambing. “Many farms that have struggled with orf in the past now recognise the benefit of vaccinating lambs at a few days old to boost their immunity to the virus. However, it is becoming clear that it is impossible to prevent the spread of orf from lamb to ewe and back again without vaccinating both parties,” says MSD Animal Health veterinary adviser Stephanie Small. “For example, a recent study suggests there is an 82% chance that the mother of a lamb with orf will have the disease on her udder or teats1. The same study estimated that flocks affected by orf could be losing between £1.06 and £14.03 per ewe, depending on the incidence of the disease in lambs and ewes, type of production system and whether lamb sale price is affected by a delay in reaching finishing weight1,” she points out. “Consequently, the source of the virus – potentially the ewe herself – needs to be considered when battling orf on your farm. Indeed, 4 | Agri News

researchers studying the disease recently concluded that, ideally, both lambs and ewes should be vaccinated2,” Ms Small says. Whilst the clinical signs of orf are easy to spot on both lambs and ewes, it is the unseen virus in the environment that should also cause concern. The virus can survive for months in cold, dry conditions, can hide away from disinfectants for years in the lambing shed and can remain viable on the wool of recovered sheep for a similar time. It isn’t enough to just protect lambs. Orf vaccination tips: 1. Only use the vaccine in flocks with confirmed cases of orf. 2. Pregnant ewes should not be vaccinated less than seven weeks before housing or lambing. This allows time for immunity to build and prevents any infected scabs entering the lambing sheds. 3. Immunity develops within four to eight weeks after vaccination, but the vaccine does not offer long-term protection so ewes need to be boosted annually. 4. As the vaccine contains live orf virus, watch for pustules developing 7-10

days after vaccination to ensure it has ‘taken’. 5. Always wear gloves when handling the vaccine as orf can be transmitted to humans. 6. Lambs are born naïve to the disease so always need to be vaccinated themselves from one day old.

New grant funding available for computerised calf feeders

Beef and dairy producers interested in a move to computerised calf feeding, or indeed replacing aged machines will soon be able to apply for a grant purchase agri-tech equipment that will make their businesses more productive and environmentally efficient.

B

eef and dairy producers interested in a move to computerised calf feeding, or indeed replacing ageing machines, will soon be able to apply for a further round of grant funding under the popular Countryside Productivity Small Grants scheme (CPSGS). Following the £15 million made available last spring, the government has earmarked an additional £30 million to help farmers

6 | Agri News

“When the government launched their first round of CPSGS funding in February 2018 we experienced a surge of interest in our Förster Technik and Urban computerised calf milk feeding machines. Now there’s a further opportunity during 2019 for calf rearers to seek government financial support to improve the efficiency of their youngstock rearing operation,” says Stacey Best, Business Manager from young animal nutrition specialist Volac. Volac says more than 100 UK farmers have already purchased new computerised calf milk feeding machines from the company throughout 2018. And with the support

network provided by Volac, their Business Managers and a team of engineers to assist with ongoing enquiries, this number is set to rise. “Farmers that have made the move to computerised feeding report a host of benefits – not least the fact that these machines take the variables out of the young calf rearing process and this leads to better calf health and growth. “What’s more, milk feeding curves can be tailored to individual farms to hit target growth rates and whilst computerised feeding is not a substitute for good management practices, the assisted cleaning facility will reduce labour hours. These machines also allow farmers to spend more productive time with their calves, rather than manually moving milk around in buckets,” says Ms Best. The application window for the additional CPSGS funding will open early in 2019. For further information about the benefits of computerised calf feeding farmers are advised to speak to their local Volac business manager.

More than a third of cattle producers have concerns over youngstock health A significant number of UK beef and dairy calf rearers feel they don’t give their youngstock the attention they deserve

A

significant number of UK beef and dairy calf rearers feel they don’t give their youngstock the attention they deserve, according to a recent survey conducted by MSD Animal Health. Between a third (of beef calf rearers) and 45% (of dairy calf rearers) of 749 UK farmers responding to the national youngstock survey have concerns over youngstock health and think they could do better, despite giving themselves between seven and eight out of ten for their current calf rearing practices. “Youngstock are the future of any herd and the way their health is managed in early life has far reaching consequences for the profitability of any beef or dairy farm enterprise,” says Dr Kat Baxter-Smith, ruminant veterinary adviser with MSD Animal Health. “The number one concern highlighted by the survey – expressed by more than one in five farmers – was inadequate housing or rearing facilities. Number two was an inability to monitor and achieve an appropriate liveweight gain, closely followed by inadequate biosecurity measures and disease prevention. Other front of mind issues 8 | Agri News

included implementing correct colostrum feeding and weaning management protocols,” she says. Dr Baxter-Smith says the survey feedback indicates that farmers are looking for support in this important area. “Calf rearing is a complex process to get absolutely right but is definitely rewarding if a number of simple husbandry guidelines and proven health protocols are implemented to suit any particular youngstock production system,” she says. Beef and dairy producers concerned about calf health can now ask their vet to use a MSD Animal Health checklist tool to score their youngstock rearing system. More than 100 youngstock audits have now been completed this year and farmer feedback has been excellent. The comprehensive and interactive checklist – developed in conjunction with vets and nutritionists experienced in investigating youngstock management problems – helps practitioner and farmer work closely together to draw up a workable action plan to improve calf health. “The checklist-based tool explores, records and scores calf health performance

across five core areas to identify the strengths and weaknesses of any rearing unit’s environment and processes,” Dr Baxter-Smith explains. “Working through a series of 10 questions within each core area – designed to tease out where a rearing unit is in terms of accepted best management practice – allows vet and farmer to quickly pinpoint any areas needing attention. What’s more, repeating the checklist every six or 12 months is a great way to keep things on track, allowing both parties to monitor progress against agreed targets,” she adds. Five steps to better calf health: Set goals and measure Implement good colostrum management and feeding protocols Feed calves correctly Maintain low infection pressure and vaccinate Ensure a healthy rearing environment Farmers interested in how they can use the new checklist to improve their youngstock rearing efficiency should contact their vet for further information.

New research suggests producers are keen to rear as many lambs as possible 90% of sheep producers say it will be very important to rear as many lambs born alive as possible in 2019

W

ith the Brexit deadline looming and uncertainty still surrounding the future status of valuable European export markets, more than 90% of UK sheep producers say it will be very important to rear as many lambs born alive as possible in 2019. That’s according to the latest research carried out by Volac to examine surplus lamb rearing intentions and practices. Over 500 (521) farms participated in the online survey. More than 51% of farms surveyed see an opportunity to rear more lambs artificially next year with 85% of units now saying they have a system in place to carry out this task. Volac’s Technical Officer, Abi Erian, says the survey findings give an interesting insight into UK surplus lamb rearing in both small (<100 ewes) and larger (>250 ewes) flocks. “Not surprisingly, in the main the lambs being reared artificially are those from triplet-bearing ewes, together with any orphans. On the whole just under 80% of farmers say that if a ewe has had triplets one lamb would be removed, although in larger flocks the figure is

nearer 90%. Smaller flocks are less likely to remove a third lamb with only 75% of units saying they carry out this practice.

milking and growing. However, larger flocks (78%) are more likely to carry out this practice than smaller flocks (64%).

“What is particularly interesting though is the lamb selection choice criteria employed. In larger flocks just under 50% of flocks remove the odd one out in a group of three – which is what we would recommend – whereas only 28% of smaller flocks do this,” says Ms Erian.

Colostrum feeding

“It is always best to leave a balanced pair of lambs on the mother. A mix of criteria are being employed to make the choice, with the most favoured approach being removal of the weakest lamb (19% of units). Other norms include always taking the strongest lamb (17%), or the smallest (15%). Just under 6% of farmers say they typically select the largest triplet, a similar proportion said they tend to remove a male lamb with just under 1% saying they generally take a female.” Interestingly, across the whole sample more than 68% of farmers would also consider removing a lamb from a twin-bearing ewe lamb to take the pressure off and allow her to keep

When it comes to feeding colostrum, 82% of producers say they always administer it to any fostered lambs within six hours of birth with smaller flocks seeming to show slightly better attention to detail in this respect. However, it seems that only around one in four larger flocks (26%) and one in five smaller flocks (21%) are feeding enough. “All surplus lambs must be fed good quality colostrum as soon as possible after birth – and preferably start receiving this essential nutrition within the first two hours of life (50ml/kg liveweight per feed) and ingest a minimum of 210ml/ kg liveweight in total within the first 24 hours,” said Ms Erian. More than a third of flocks use artificial colostrum with only 6% stripping colostrum from other ewes to feed to orphan lambs.

T

he NSTS have over 240 test centres around the whole of the UK able to offer at least one of the test types required to meet current legislation for pesticide application equipment (PAE) testing. Around 10% of these also provide fertiliser spreader testing where we have seen a steady increase in the number of tests carried out. Fertiliser input costs are on a par with pesticides and with the benefits of having a sprayer tested each year, these benefits can also be realised with spreader testing. The effects of uneven application of fertiliser are not always visible but yield variations will be at time of harvest and that loss in yield directly relates to lost input costs where the crop cannot achieve its full Bromyard Road, Ledbury, HR8 1LG t: 01531 632171 www.agrimec-ledbury.co.uk

potential. From the NSTS test, following an inspection of the machine and tray test to calculate coefficient of variation (CV) you can be confident that the spreader will give the best results possible from the products tested. Back to PAE testing; there are four different tests available to cover all different types – liquid, slug pellets, micro granules and fogging machines. Liquid covers a wide range from sprayers, weed wipers and seed treatment, through to potato application equipment, boat sprayers and train sprayers. The list is very extensive and wide ranging. Red Tractor do have different timescales for test and retest and this can also be dependent on which scheme you are in so its always worth check-

ing the protocols for confirmation. Take a look at the NSTS website www.nsts.org. uk where you can find much of this information, along with details of where to find a test centre in your area. Anyone applying professional pesticides must have their equipment tested. This includes horticulture and fruit but also sprayers working in the amenity sector. Ranging from pavements and highways, rail lines and stations, school and sports grounds and golf courses, amenity has an important role to play and it is vital in the public spaces they operate that equipment is in the best condition to apply pesticides safely and accurately.

Vulnerable group advice helps serve up strong egg sales A year on from a change in official advice, which said that everyone including those class as vulnerable groups can now enjoy eggs

A

year on from a change in official advice, which said that everyone including those classed as vulnerable groups (mums to be, young children, and the elderly) can now enjoy eggs however they want, provided they are produced to British Lion standards, retail egg sales have soared to new heights. While the egg market has enjoyed a period of longterm sustained growth the latest figures are particularly significant as they cover the year since the Food Standards Agency amended its advice.

20 | Agri News

The October figures show egg sales volume up +4.9% (Kantar Worldpanel 12 w/e 7.10.18), around 70 million additional eggs, or the equivalent of more than one additional egg for every person in the UK, have been sold at retail compared to the same period in 2017. The good news for the market is that sales are actually accelerating, with volume up +6% for the latest 4 week period (4 w/e 7.10.18). Andrew Joret, Chairman of the British Egg Industry Council, said: “We have long-since felt that vulnerable

groups have been avoiding eggs and missing out on their fantastic nutritional benefits, and these figures would appear to support that. “This is fantastic news for both retailers and the egg industry and underlines the continuing popularity of eggs as a meal solution for the whole population, now including the vulnerable groups that may have been avoiding eggs due to safety advice about the need to cook them thoroughly, but it’s just the tip of the iceberg. “We expected the change in egg safety advice to take some time to filter through as the previous advice has been passed down through generations of families and health professionals, so we’re delighted to see such a significant impact in just a year. With this barrier now removed everyone can benefit from eggs, however they are cooked, and we feel very confident that egg sales will continue to grow and grow.”

Getting Brexit deal through parliament will be ‘a real test’ says farming minister The government has just days left to agree a trade deal with the EU or the UK will leave next March without one.

T

he government has just days left to agree a trade deal with the EU or the UK will leave next March without one. That was the message from farming minister George Eustice, a Brexit supporter, to delegates at this year’s EPIC in Newport. Eustice said unless a deal was agreed by the end of November there simply wouldn’t be enough parliamentary time to allow it to clear all the hurdles before the deadline of 29 March 2019, the day the UK officially leaves the EU. “The next few weeks are crucial,” he said, speaking on

5 November. “Unless we have a withdrawal agreement by the end of November we will run out of legislative time to get an agreement through parliamentary procedure.” Addressing the hall of around 350 egg and poultry industry delegates, he said he believed Brexit would be a success. “I think in five years’ time when we look back people will wonder what all the fuss was about.” Business has a “fear of change,” he said, “but the country voted for change.” Eustice, who is Conservative MP for Cambourne and Redruth and has served as farming minister since

2015, said there were still “real challenges at the [Irish] border. He said he was “very confident the prime minister will get an agreement with the EU,” but was less confident a majority of MPs would vote in favour of it in parliament. “That is when the real test will come. I hope parliament will take a sensible approach,” he said. In the event of no deal being struck, Eustice said the government could keep goods moving across borders by implementing “a risk-based approach to border inspections” and would consider unilaterally introducing “tariff-free quotas” on certain EU goods. He said the “central premise” of Brexit was that Europe does “not have to have a centralised system for free trade” to continue. “A moment of clarity is on its way by Christmas,” he added. Addressing concerns about chlorinated chicken entering the UK market as part of a trade deal with the US, Eustice sought to reassure delegates. “The government has been absolutely clear we will maintain standards. Other countries may ask for that but we do not have to accept that,” he said. Agri News | 21

More than a third of vets are considering leaving the profession Researchers at the University of Exeter have been working with BVA as part of the Vet Futures project to explore confidence and motivation

R

esearchers at the University of Exeter have been working with BVA as part of the Vet Futures project to explore confidence and motivation levels within the profession. The study, designed by Professor Michelle Ryan and Dr Chris Begeny, shows that day-to-day workplace experiences including feeling valued and admired by colleagues, feeling that one has a sense of fitting in with those who have been successful before, and feeling that one has role models available, have the strongest impact on vets’ motivations to stay in the profession or leave. Without these motivators respondents to the survey revealed they are less likely to feel satisfied in their roles and more likely to suffer burnout and consider leaving the profession. Dr Begeny said: “Our study with BVA clearly demonstrates that vets’ motivation, which encompasses confidence, career potential, and ambition, is very much affected by their day-to-day experiences in the profession. Taken together, these results suggest that if the profession as a whole, and employers more specifically, can implement practices that facilitate feeling valued, fitting in, and the availability of role models, this is likely to have multiple benefits in terms of cultivating a cohort of vets who are strongly motivated in their

22 | Agri News

careers, who are satisfied with their jobs, and who are keen to stay within the profession.” The study, which included a survey of 1,250 members of the BVA Voice of the Veterinary Profession survey panel, found that 37% of respondents were actively thinking about leaving the profession. But the report goes beyond describing the current situation in the profession and outlines some simple steps employers and employees can take improve the experiences of vets and boost the retention of skilled and motivated staff. These include: emboldening vets’ confidence and career ambitions by making efforts to seek out advice from a broad range of employees, facilitating opportunities for colleagues to seek out ideas and advice from one another, and ensuring that such opportunities are as evenly distributed as possible. addressing issues of fitting in by making available accessible and attainable role models, communicating that all sorts of people have been successful in the veterinary profession and ensuring that there are clear routes to success. supporting reduced work hours, and confronting beliefs that an employee’s value rests on their ability to work long hours. British Veterinary Association President Simon Doherty said: “There has been a lot of conjecture in recent years about why many vets report feeling

stressed and unsatisfied in their roles and what is prompting them to leave the profession. This report goes beyond describing the problem, really explores the motivation and experiences of vets on the ground and sets out some possible solutions. “This is not about employer needs versus those of the employee, we hear similar concerns from both sides of the debate and I believe there is a consensus that things need to change. We cannot look at issues with retention and recruitment without first addressing problems with low confidence, wellbeing and job satisfaction. “These findings clearly show that day-to-day workplace experiences have the greatest impact on vets’ satisfaction with their work and improving these will have a long-term positive impact for employer and employees alike. We all agree we want to fix the ‘leaky bucket’ and that means it is time to change the workplace culture. We all have a role to play in engaging with these discussions and with the suggestions set out in this research.” The study revealed that women in the profession were more likely than their male peers to struggle with the lack of role models and less likely to experience the feeling of ‘fitting in’ and of being valued and admired by peers.

Effective Poultry House Cleaning Steve Birchall Poultry House Cleaning Services High pressure powerwashing, disinfectant and cleaners With the poultry industry experiencing more than its fair share of problems over the past 12 months or so no poultry producer can afford to hinder flock performance by allowing a build up of micro organisms. Even low disease levels drag profits back and skimping on the cleaning routine between flocks is false economy, says Lancashire based cleaning specialist Steve Birchall. “There is no opportunity these days to rest buildings between flocks. Turnaround times are tight and it is, therefore, vital that buildings are not only throughly cleaned but disinfected as well, and if there has been a problem

the cleaning and disinfection treatment should take account of it” says Steve, who has been operating a nationwide poultry contract shed cleaning business for over 30 years. His three teams are equipped to carry out whatever cleaning regime producers require and he suggests a good standard routine for anyone who wants the best safeguard. After the litter has been removed, the building and any equipment either retained inside or taken out should be power washed at about 2,500 psi with a combined cleaner/ sanitizer/deodorizer, which should remove some of the 80% of micro organisms at this stage.

“Older buildings are often more difficult to clean than modern ones”, Steve says, “However, if you are going to do the job at all, then it is worth doing properly and you have to take sufficient time, particularly in breeder or laying units where nest boxes and equipment have been in place for 12 months or more. Broiler units with a six or seven day turnaround are less difficult. However, people who prefer to do what is a rather unpleasant job themselves often get rather jaded before it has been done properly. If there are other enterprises on the farm, they have to keep breaking off to do other work.

2019 Kawasaki Mule Pro-MX line up of new models

The 2019 Kawasaki Mule Pro-MX is built around a smaller chassis than the rest of the Mule Pro family

T

he 2019 Kawasaki Mule Pro-MX is built around a smaller chassis than the rest of the Mule Pro family, which should translate into better performance in tighter spaces. Kawasaki’s 2019 off-road lineup has been unveiled, which features a series of carryover models along with a single new one – the 2019 Kawasaki Mule Pro-MX. Kawasaki has had a lot of success with the Mule

Pro family since it was introduced a few years ago and all have shared the same full-size chassis. What sets the Kawasaki Mule Pro-MX apart is its size. Built for two people, the Pro-MX is almost a full foot shorter and four inches narrower than the Mule Pro-FXR. Full measurements include a length of 110 inches, width of 60 inches and height of 74.4 inches. Despite the shorter length, the wheelbase is not even an inch shorter than the Mule

Pro-FXR at 78.9 inches so they share a similar turning radius of approximately 14 feet. Another bit change on the Kawasaki Mule Pro-MX is the engine. While the rest of the gas-powered Mule Pro models feature an 812cc three-cylinder engine, the Pro-MX relies on a 695cc single-cylinder engine.

The utility of choice for many professionals such as farmers, gamekeepers and all grounds-care experts, the two machines at the top of the Kawasaki MULE series will carry the new name PRO for 2016.
