Sward diversity boosts prospects for sustainable farming
Well managed multi species leys can have the production capacity to sustain outstanding growth rates
W
ell managed multi species leys can have the production capacity to sustain outstanding growth rates, with liveweight gains of 250g/ head/day in lambs and 2kg/ head/day in growing cattle being reported, according to Rhys Owen of Field Options. Speaking at the Federation of Welsh Grassland Societies farm open day at Marc and David Jones’ Trefnant Hall near Welshpool, he said the inclusion of proven herb species alongside the right mix of legumes and grasses has the potential to add significant productivity to grassland. In addition, multi species swards contribute positively to soil health, animal health, and have a key role to play in sustainable livestock farming in the future. “There’s no doubt that herb species such as plantain and grazing chicory can contribute significantly to a sward, both in terms of the dry matter production and also the nutritional quality of the forage,” said Rhys. “It is important, however, to use proven varieties such as the modern plantain Boston or Puna II perennial chicory, and to ensure that there is a good balance of species within a mixture.
“Plantain and chicory are deep rooting plants, so are more drought tolerant than other sward species and are rich in trace minerals. They have a different growth habit to grasses and legumes, so are complementary within a mixture and will boost productivity in mid-summer when ryegrass can often suffer a dip in production. “Legumes, including white clover, contribute nitrogen through fixation, with a 30% sward content of white clover capable of providing up to 150kgN/ha. With a correctly balanced white clover content, a mixed species sward can achieve comparable dry matter production to an all grass pasture with approximately a quarter of the artificial nitrogen inputs.
“Whilst herbs and legumes have a big role to play, it’s still important to include a good proportion of grass species within a multi species ley. This helps to broaden the nutritional profile of the forage and maintains a dense base to the sward, minimising the amount of weed ingress and giving the mixture a 6–7 year productive life if well-managed. Again, it’s important that any varieties used are tried and tested, and we also recommend the inclusion of

a modern cocksfoot variety such as Beverley or timothy varieties alongside proven high performing perennial ryegrasses, to add resilience, persistence and winter hardiness. “Multi species swards do require some adjustments to the management, such as avoiding poaching, as this will cause the loss of species like chicory, and recognising that control of broad-leaved weeds is difficult without taking out the herb and legume component, but the potential rewards are certainly there in the right system.” Field Options carries out long-term performance trials on grassland mixtures at its test facility at Harper Adams University. In the drought year of 2018, the company’s Endurance II Herbal mixture out-yielded the control perennial ryegrass variety by 2.7tDM/ha. The Federation of Welsh Grassland Societies farm open day took place at Trefnant Hall on 2nd September. The event was free to attend and was sponsored by Corteva, Ecosyl, Field Options and CF Fertilisers.

Fertiliser policy key to making a success of multi-cut silage
Dairy farmers planning to adopt a multi-cut approach to grass silage making should be mindful of their fertiliser application policy “Applying too much is likely to result in excessive nitrogen in the crop, which can disrupt the fermentation and lead to butyric silage. If too little nitrogen is applied, grass plants can become stressed, which usually means they go to seed prematurely. In this case, the digestibility of the silage will be reduced.
D
airy farmers planning to adopt a multi-cut approach to grass silage making should be mindful of their fertiliser application policy in order to maximise the benefits. This was the advice of Germinal GB’s Ben Wixey, speaking at UK Dairy Day, where feedback from farmers and reports from the trade pointed to the ever growing popularity of the earlier and more frequent cutting method. “We’re seeing more and more dairy farmers adopting a multi-cut approach and, with crops being cut at optimum maturity as a result, there is evidence from this season’s silage analyses that the practice is having a positive
impact on forage quality. “This is good news for dairy farmers, as it will ultimately help to reduce bought-in feed costs, but it is important to manage fertiliser applications appropriately to get the best out of the system.” Mr Wixey said that applying 2 units of nitrogen per acre per day (2.5kgN/ha) between cuts should be the aim, with timeliness being a key element. “With a multi-cut system, the cutting interval should be in the region of 28-30 days, which would mean applying no more than 60 units per acre (75kgN/ha) between cuts,” he said, “and this should ideally go on as soon as the last trailer has left the field.
8 | AgriNews | www.agrinewsmedia.co.uk
“There’s no doubting the potential rewards from a multi-cut system, but you must start with a good quality ley and pay attention to the details, including fertiliser applications.”

REX 4 The Landini Rex 4, equipped with the Advanced Driving System, will be on display in Hanover. The Advanced Driving
System is an innovative hybrid assisted-driving system that, thanks to cutting-edge mechatronic equipment, facilitates the operator in all manoeuvres in the field and on the road, where driving comfort is also increased both by the stiffening of the steering depending on the speed as is already the case for cars and by the automatic return of the wheels to their central position. It can also be connected to satellite guidance, memorisation and control of wheel positions during slope and in-furrow operation, and offsets the effects of external stresses on steering accuracy. The versions available in Germany are the REX 4-120 GT (ideal for wide orchards), REX 4-100 S (for narrow orchards) and the REX 4-110 GE (for orchards, in a platform version suitable for moving easily under the branches of the rows). Power ranges from 70 to 112hp thanks to Deutz AG engines equipped with an EGR & DOC exhaust gas treatment system without DPF and therefore without regeneration. The Engine Memo Switch is standard equipment and offers convenience in operations that require a specific engine rpm to be stored and recalled.

Primary elements of the system include a new third knotter camgear that adds a third billhook rotation for an active release of the loop knot. There is also a new twine disc with two external notches rather than four, which releases the pressure on the twine at the second knot formation, with an integrated pin lifting the twine disc holder to allow the twine to escape from the disc instead of being cut. The knotter camgear drive powers the twine disc, bill hook and knife arm. “With TwinePro, once the first standard knot is tied, a second knot – the loop one – is created for additional bale security,” explains Maxime Rocaboy. “Not only does this loop knot provide increased strength of up to 30% according to twine manufacturer TAMA, resulting in greater baling efficiency and productivity, but it enables well-tied bales of standard density to be made using lower-cost twine, or higher densities to be achieved with standard twine.”

arlier maturity and tight spray intervals are key considerations for winter wheat variety choice Harvest delays brought on by this summer’s catchy weather have underlined the importance of growing winter wheat varieties that aren’t late-maturing, says Syngenta technical manager for conventional cereals, Kathryn Hamlen. Earlier maturity could also be especially relevant if intending to delay drilling to reduce pressure from barley yellow dwarf virus, fungal diseases or grass weeds, she adds.
says Mrs Hamlen. “You don’t necessarily have to grow the very earliestmaturing winter wheat – maybe something rated zero for ripening on the AHDB Recommended List. Even just a few days’ earlier harvesting could provide an important safety margin against unpredictable summer weather. “If you are considering delaying drilling, against barley yellow dwarf virus for example, this sort of earlier ripening becomes even more significant. That’s because later drilling inevitably tends to push harvest date even further back.”
“This summer saw reports of grain sprouting in ears where Besides maturity, another crops couldn’t be harvested in increasingly noteworthy time before the rains arrived,” characteristic to consider in
winter wheat, given rising concerns about controlling unpredictable yellow rust outbreaks and Septoria tritici, says Mrs Hamlen, is varieties that don’t have long intervals between fungicide spray timings, such as T1 and T2. This is important to ensure fungicides don’t run out of steam between applications, she says, leaving plants exposed to infection. “Trials observations show that because they are fairly late to reach growth stage 30 and relatively early-maturing, the winter feed wheat varieties Gleam and Graham don’t tend to suffer from stretched spray intervals. They also have good disease resistance. “Both varieties have also delivered fantastic yields in trials in the 2019 harvest, and the performance from Gleam in its first year on farm this last season has been excellent. “In Syngenta trials, Gleam has also shown the smallest yield penalty of all varieties tested from delaying drilling from September to the last week of November. Gleam also performs well as a second wheat, which is another situation where drilling is likely to be later,” she adds.

The Venta seed drill features an 1,800 litre seed hopper and uses a fluted metering unit with large splines for larger seeds (wheat, barley, peas, beans, etc.) as well as small splines for smaller seeds such as oilseed rape. Seeding rates can be set between 1 and 430kg/ha. A speed sensing radar ensures precise seeding at up to 15km/hr and it is possible to shut-off every second row for special applications. Is ‘flexitarianism’ the future? A workshop held has revealed a new trend A workshop held at the University of Nottingham has revealed that ‘flexitarianism’ is a new and growing trend amongst British consumers

s ‘flexitarianism’ the future? A workshop held at the University of Nottingham has revealed that ‘flexitarianism’ is a new and growing trend amongst British consumers. Delegates at an event that discussed plant-based diets heard how eating more plantbased products represented a sustainable future for food and drink production. Organised by the Agrifood Training Partnership (AFTP), and chaired by AFTP Director Carol Wagstaff, the workshop heard from industry speakers about how plant-based diets are growing in popularity. Only 7% of the British population is vegan, whilst 14% identify as vegetarian. However, the panel of speakers explained how more than 30% of the population
identify themselves as ‘flexitarians’. This new group has emerged through a desire to enjoy a more balanced diet and is driven by environmental concerns and a desire to see a more sustainable future for food production.
The development of ingredients such as plantbased emulsions to replace mayonnaise and foams to replace egg whites are on the rise as food producers seek more sustainable means of producing consumer staples. The goal being to produce food rich in protein without using animal-based ingredients.
Delegates heard that trends were leading food producers to find ways to invent alternatives to household favourites. Marit Nijmann, Business Development Scientist at Nottingham University’s Sensory Science Jan England, Managing Centre, explained that Director of market research ‘bleeding vegan burgers’ company England Marketing, had been created to offer explained: “80% of British consumers the same dining children do not eat the experience as the everrecommended five a day and popular beef burger. 20% are obese. Government launches £20m fund for sustainable farming tech and robots
A challenge, run by UK Research and Innovation on behald of the government will help farmers to reduce pollution and boost production
A
challenge, run by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) on behalf of the government, will help farmers to reduce pollution and boost food production through the integrated use of new digital technologies, sensors, artificial intelligence, machine learning and robotics. This investment is necessary to meet the challenge of climate change and get the agricultural sector on a trajectory to achieve net zero emissions by 2040. Under the latest round of the Transforming Food Production Challenge, £20m grant funding is on offer for future food production systems that have the potential to transform current methods of production by improving sustainability and productivity. The competition opened on 16 September. Innovative ideas that have won funding under similar previous government schemes include a project to produce a prototype for a soft-fruit picking robot, which would reduce the need for seasonal fruitpicking labour and a project called Tuberscan, which will scan potatoes underground ensuring they can be harvested at the right time. Peter Kendall, Chair, Agriculture and Horticulture
Development Board and Chair, UKRI Transforming Food Production advisory group, said: “Equipping UK agriculture for the coming century of climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing the sector and the application of the latest technology, including robotics and AI is a major part of the way forward. We welcome the government’s current support for innovation in the sector and encourage farmers and other entrepreneurs to look into the offer of funding.” Katrina Hayter, Challenge Director, Transforming Food Production at UKRI, said: “The UK needs to become more efficient and environmentally sustainable in the food it produces. By harnessing the best of British bright ideas, we can improve productivity, open up new markets and help meet the nation’s ambitious net zero emissions target. “This competition is a great opportunity to showcase fantastic innovations that will help transform agriculture across the UK.” The Transforming Food Production challenge would particularly welcome large-scale ambitious and integrated projects to demonstrate the art of the possible in terms of future

food production systems. Two other schemes will also open shortly: One will invite joint projects from the UK and China with a focus on autonomous technologies such as sensors, systems, vehicles and robotics to enhance productivity and sustainability. These projects will aim to reduce emissions from agriculture, contributing to the target of net zero emissions from agriculture by 2040. The competition will open on 7 October. The second competition is called Science into Technology and Practice which aims to strengthen ties between farmers, researchers and businesses to develop approaches to improve productivity. It will support projects that will transform food production and opens for application from 28 October. All of this investment in new resource efficient, low emission production systems is part of the government’s commitment to boost R&D spending to 2.4% of GDP by 2027. The fund helps businesses, researchers and industry to transform farming and meet the needs of a growing population.
Global poultry demand likely to increase as swine fever tightens markets Demand for poultry meat is likely to receive a short term boost, in response to the spread of African Swine Fever affecting the supply of pork
D
emand for poultry meat is likely to receive a short term boost, in response to the spread of African Swine Fever affecting the supply of pork, according to analysts at Dutch investment bank Rabobank. However, the effects are likely to be limited and unstable, according to the report Poultry Quarterly Q4 2019: Challenging Global Supply – Rising Dark Meat Prices, Low Breast Meat Prices. “Some market upside is expected to come from rising prices and demand substitution, given the impact of African Swine Fever on global pork markets,” according to Nan-Dirk Mulder, senior animal protein analyst. “However, upside for the global poultry industry will be
limited in the short term.” The report also details key concerns, such as the ongoing oversupply situations in many global markets, like the EU, US and South Africa. Only diseaseaffected China and Mexico, and Brazil (due to the combination of supply reduction and improved export demand), are performing relatively well, the report states. Other markets are suffering from oversupply. Therefore, more disciplined supply should be the key to returning to profitability for the global poultry industry in 2H 2019. China buys relatively small volumes in global markets – mainly consisting of special dark meat cuts like feet, legs and wings. Breast meat is not a preferred product in China, and although demand for locally-produced breast meat
may increase, there will be no interest in global traded breast meat as the price difference is too big. Countries with access to ASFaffected China and Vietnam will see some better prices for dark meat, but a weak global demand for breast meat remains the key concern for global companies, as for many industries this is the profit maker. In addition to the direct trade impact, there will be indirect price support for poultry industries in countries where the pork sector has good access to China, like the EU and Brazil. The main focus for global companies should be on restoring fundamentals through more disciplined supply growth in the coming months, the report states.

Polaris celebrates 65 years of growth, innovation and performance 2019 marks the 65th anniversary of Polaris, a brand that has substantially grown to become a global leader in the powersports industry
2
019 marks the 65th anniversary of Polaris, a brand that has substantially grown to become a global leader in the Powersports industry, fuelling the passion of riders, workers and outdoor enthusiasts for more than six decades. Striving to deliver quality, safety and performance, Polaris continually develops new innovation and technology to help people do more outside, whether it be on sand, snow, water, trails or road. Founded in 1954 In the small town of Roseau, Minnesota in 1954, two brothers and a best friend had a problem to solve. Avid outdoorsmen, the three needed a better way to travel through the deep snow of Northern Minnesota during the long winter months. Combining skilled hands and their collective ingenuity, Edgar and Allan Hetteen and David Johnson built the first Polaris snowmobile, pieced together from parts in their machine shop. That year, Polaris Industries Inc. was founded. Continuous expansion The very first snowmobile was sold for less than $500 to a lumberyard owner, but over
the next 65 years, that same ingenuity and adventurous spirit drove Polaris forward, amassing a number of industry firsts and inspired ideas along the way. In 1985, Polaris expanded its product suite to include All Terrain Vehicles with its first ATV brought to market, the Trail Boss, later joined by the world’s first ATV with electric fuel injection, the Sportsman®. In the 1990s, momentum continued to build when Polaris introduced personal watercrafts, Victory® motorcycles, and the original Polaris RANGER®. During difficult times in the US economy, Polaris put the pedal to the medal and introduced the RZR® in 2007. Not only was this a game-changing new product in the market, but it also created an entirely new product category, the sportsrecreational side-by-side. More recently, Polaris has continued to grow its brand portfolio. In 2011, Polaris acquired and relaunched the Indian Motorcycle brand, and later in 2014, Polaris created a new product category with the Slingshot as well as celebrating the grand opening of Opole in Poland, its first manufacturing facility outside of North America. Creating a customer

experience outside of the sole purchase of a Polaris vehicle has led to the addition of multiple aftermarket parts, garments and accessories brands including, 509, Klim, Kolpin, and Transamerican Auto Parts. Last year, Polaris acquired Boat Holdings LLC, expanding Polaris’ footprint in the recreational outdoors market. What started with a single snowmobile has morphed into more than 30 brands across a variety of product lines. No longer just for snow, the Polaris product lineup is now enjoyed across every terrain, in every continent. Think Outside This year, Polaris has introduced its new branding with an updated corporate brand purpose, corporate name, logo and emblem, as well as a new tagline – Think Outside. Combining a historic commitment to excellence and getting people outside with a drive the deliver unique experiences and services to new audiences, the idea behind Think Outside has always been at the core of what Polaris does, and now it’s inviting more people to embrace that mindset.
