Cleanstraw system reduces dust in livestock housing New calf growth app and website from Volac The Midlands Machinery Show 21st/22nd November 2018 National Sprayer Testing Service from Ian Foreman - Manager Cover crop inoculant to improve soil health New air scrubber reduces ammonia NFU showcasing British farming at party conferences
New Cleanstraw system reduces dust in livestock housing Kuhn Farm Machinery has introduced a dust control system to its range of straw bedders: available as an option on new equipment KUHN Farm Machinery has introduced a dust control system to its range of straw bedders: available as an option on new equipment, or as a retrofit upgrade for existing machines, the CLEANSTRAW system reduces dust in livestock buildings by applying a fine mist of water to straw as it is distributed for bedding purposes. Being launched at the UK Dairy Day at the Telford International Centre on 12th September, the CLEANSTRAW system comprises a 64-litre water tank and three misting nozzles mounted at the exit of the straw blowing chute. The nozzles are fed by a 12v/15amp pump which
provides water at a flow rate of 1.8l/min, enough to treat 12 to 18 bales of straw at a rate of 1 litre of water per 100kg of straw. Applying a mist of water at this rate and in this way eliminates excessive levels of airborne dust by reducing the amount of time that these particles remain suspended in the air: trials have shown that the air in a typical livestock building will be dust-free within 30 seconds after straw-blowing with the CLEANSTRAW system has ceased, compared to several minutes under normal conditions. “Reducing the amount of dust in livestock buildings has a number of advantages,” explains KUHN Product Specialist, Katie Calcutt. “It not only creates a cleaner, more comfortable and more productive environment for cattle, but also for farm workers who will be less susceptible to inhaling dust particles and other impurities which may be present in the straw.” The CLEANSTRAW system is available for

all KUHN straw bedders and mixer wagons equipped with a blowing turbine. These include the POLYDRIVE equipped range of PRIMOR straw bedders and feeders and the PROFILE PLUS range of mixer wagons with straw bedding capabilities. The CLEANSTRAW’s nozzles and pump components are protected against blockages by a suction filter system, and all the system’s components sit within the original footprint of the machine to which they are mounted. The water tank is equipped with a drain valve for cleaning and maintenance and is transparent to make it easy to check the water level at a glance. A pressure gauge and manually operated thumbwheel are used to adjust tank pressure and water flow. The system is automatically activated when the POLYDRIVE system is engaged and can also be armed or disabled via an in-cab switch: this enables users of a combination straw bedding and feeding wagon to turn the system on when blowing straw for bedding, or off when dispensing feed. “Adding a fine mist of water as straw exits the spreading chute means very little water is required,” Katie adds. “This not only preserves the straw’s absorbency potential, ensuring it remains an effective and hygienic bedding material, but also means the straw bedder’s maximum working capacity remains unaffected.”

New calf growth app and website from Volac
Cattle youngstock rearers now have a quick and easy way of recording and monitoring individual calf growth rates
Cattle youngstock rearers now have a quick and easy way of recording and monitoring individual calf growth rates against pre-set targets, thanks to the availability of a new smartphone App from Volac. Launched as a free tool available as a download from the company's refreshed 'Feed for Growth' website, the new calf growth App is one of an innovative range of practical resources available from Volac to help farmers grow better cows.
com<http:// www. feedforgrowth. com> website and keyed in your growth 'roadmap' target data (i.e. calf birthweight; weaning weight; age at weaning; mature bodyweight; and desired age at first calving), simply download the App and get started. The App allows you to set up different holdings and record a calf's unique ear tag number. You then simply record an individual calf's weight as it develops and instantly see if it is on track against your pre-set roadmap graph, allowing you to make changes to its feeding programme as necessary.
"Herds can be congregated into coloured groups to help you keep track of different batches of calves. What's "Our new 'Feed for Growth' more, each calf record App is designed to help contains useful areas for farmers working with logging adversities and any youngstock to simplify notes; about its health, for the process of assessing example. The App has been whether individual animals created for farmers to do are on track to meet key better by their cows and users performance targets," says can be confident that their Product Manager Samantha data remains confidential Sampson. and is not visible, collected or used by anybody," Ms "Once you have registered on Sampson says. the new www.feedforgrowth.

Volac has also refreshed its 'Feed for Growth' website, which contains a host of practical advice, help and resources to help farmers understand exactly what the calf needs, how to put an efficient growth plan together, and how to simply and effectively measure and monitor performance. The site also holds a range of downloadable calf rearing guides, a calf feeding calculator and the contact details of the local Volac business managers. "How you manage a calf during the vital first few weeks of life and beyond has a significant impact on the lifetime performance of that animal. Consequently, our aim is to provide the best package of calf milk formulas, advice and practical management tools we can to make the whole business of successful calf rearing as profitable as possible," Ms Sampson says. Calf rearers visiting the Volac stand at UK Dairy Day on 12th September can ask for a demonstration of the new calf growth App and claim a free calf weigh tape at the same time. Five-point plan offers guidance for delaying autumn wheat drilling
Think before rushing in to drill winter what after the early harvest and now we’ve had rainfull, farmers are being urged. Think before rushing in to drill winter wheat after the early harvest and now we've had rainfall, farmers are being urged. With large areas of land harvested much earlier than normal, and soil moisture levels improved, growers will be itching to drill empty fields, says Nick Myers, head of crop production for agronomy firm, ProCam. But on farms suffering from blackgrass, there's a compelling argument for holding back, he stresses. "Low blackgrass seed dormancy after the hot, dry summer might increase the temptation to bring drilling dates forward - because a bigger proportion of this year's shed blackgrass seed is predicted to germinate earlier. But resist that temptation," Mr Myers urges. "The later you can safely delay drilling, the less blackgrass you'll have emerging in the crop, and the less blackgrass seed will potentially be shed back to the soil next summer. "Instead of viewing this as an opportunity to drill earlier, think of it as an opportunity to make worthwhile inroads into reducing blackgrass populations for the long-term." On farms where delayed drilling has already been practiced for a few years, and blackgrass levels have already started to decline, Mr Myers acknowledges it might be particularly tempting to edge drilling earlier again

this year. But, he says, this could undo some of that good work. "Some blackgrass will inevitably germinate later anyway," he adds. "Obviously, you have to assess how late you can drill based on your farm situation. If you can't delay all fields, at least delay those with the highest weed burdens." To help growers navigate through delayed autumn wheat drilling in blackgrass fields, Mr Myers suggests a five-point plant: 1. Leave stubbles undisturbed as long as possible. That way you'll allow longer for blackgrass seed on the surface to germinate, but also longer for it to be eaten by predators. Only disturb the soil at the point of having to prepare the seedbed. 2. Avoid using inversion tillage (ploughing) if possible. The longer you can leave buried blackgrass seed underground, the more of it will rot away. 3. Prepare high quality seedbeds. These will stimulate the maximum amount of blackgrass to germinate before planting the crop. That way, even more blackgrass can be killed off in a stale seedbed. Good seedbeds will also produce better performance from soil-acting herbicides, he notes.
4. Depending on farm situation, consider delaying drilling until well into October. Octoberdrilled wheat generally contains much less blackgrass than September-drilled. Also, information from ProCam's 4Cast crop database showed winter wheat yield hadn't declined despite average drilling date being delayed from 2 October to 12 October between the harvest seasons of 2011 and 2017. Most likely this was because any yield penalty from later drilling was offset by crops containing less blackgrass. 5. Adapt agronomy according to later drilling. Select wheat varieties that can compensate for later drilling through greater tillering, and that are flexible with regard to drilling date. The variety might be 1 or 2% lower yielding on paper, but you could end up with a better crop. Also, take steps to maximise establishment, for example by using a seed treatment shown to produce rapid establishment. "As well as helping against blackgrass, delaying drilling can also help against ryegrass, and help to reduce take-all, eyespot and lodging pressures in winter wheat," says Mr Myers. "It can also help reduce the risk of BYDV because there are likely to be fewer aphids about.

New mounted tine stubble cultivator to be unveiled at Tillage-Live Kuhn Farm Machinery will be debuting a new version of its mounted Cultimer tine stubble cultivator at the AEA’s Tillage-Live event KUHN Farm Machinery will be debuting a new version of its mounted CULTIMER tine stubble cultivator at the AEA’s Tillage-Live event at Dunbar, East Lothian on Wednesday 26th September. The new machine, the CULTIMER M 300 is positioned as a lighter weight alternative to the range’s other mounted machine, the CULTIMER L 300: instead of the L 300’s three rows of 10 tines, the CULTIMER M 300 is equipped with two rows of seven tines. This makes the overall machine shorter and lighter and therefore suitable for use with tractors in the 75 to 135hp bracket. The CULTIMER M 300 has a 3m working width and is capable of working soils to depths ranging from 50 to 350mm. Its two rows of tines are followed by a single row of eight levelling discs mounted on maintenance free hubs, and a roller bar. The working depth of the tines is easily and accurately adjusted using spacers, while the levelling discs are adjusted with a winding handle. An optional hydraulic roller depth adjustment system can also be specified. Southam Agricultural Fields Farm, Station Road Southam, Warwickshire CV47 2DH t: 01926 813 426 www.southamagri.co.uk
The new cultivator can be equipped with extra wide 480mm wing tines for stubble cultivation after harvesting, deep point tines with an 80mm deflector to restructure the soil before drilling, or 50mm points with straight deflectors for working soils at depth. Hard-wearing carbide tips are also available as an option. Two safety systems are available: a traction (T) bolt safety system which activates at 3,000kg of pressure, or a non-stop mechanical (NSM) double spring system which activates at 600kg of pressure at the tine point and which enables the tine to shift sideways by 150mm before shifting vertically by up to 300mm. The CULTIMER’s levelling discs can also be specified with or without safety. A choice of three 600mm diameter rollers is available: the light T-Ring roller which produces 130kg/m of pressure and is ideal for breaking clods and silty soils, the multipurpose T-Liner roller which produces 140kg/m of pressure and is designed for use in stony and wet conditions, or the rubber coated Packliner roller which produces 165kg/m of pressure and ensures maximum surface area
tamping in light soils. The new CULTIMER M 300 has an underbeam clearance of 85cm and is attached via a Cat. 2 hitch as standard, with a Cat. 3 frame available as an option. Retail prices for the CULTIMER M 300 start at £9,833 for the entry-level T safety bolt and T-Ring version and rise to £16,051 for the NSM and Packliner equipped version. National Sprayer Testing Service Ian foreman - NSTS Manager
The NSTS have over 240 test centres around the whole of the UK able to offer at least one of the test types required to meet legislation The NSTS have over 240 test centres around the whole of the UK able to offer at least one of the test types required to meet current legislation for pesticide application equipment (PAE) testing. Around 10% of these also provide fertiliser spreader testing where we have seen a steady increase in the number of tests carried out. Fertiliser input costs are on a par with pesticides and with the benefits of having a sprayer tested each year, these benefits can also be realised with spreader testing. The effects of uneven application of fertiliser are not always visible but yield variations will be at time of harvest and that loss in yield directly relates to lost input costs where the crop cannot achieve its full Bromyard Road, Ledbury, HR8 1LG t: 01531 632171 www.agrimec-ledbury.co.uk
potential. From the NSTS test, following an inspection of the machine and tray test to calculate coefficient of variation (CV) you can be confident that the spreader will give the best results possible from the products tested. Back to PAE testing; there are four different tests available to cover all different types – liquid, slug pellets, micro granules and fogging machines. Liquid covers a wide range from sprayers, weed wipers and seed treatment, through to potato application equipment, boat sprayers and train sprayers. The list is very extensive and wide ranging. Red Tractor do have different timescales for test and retest and this can also be dependent on which scheme you are in so its always worth check-
ing the protocols for confirmation. Take a look at the NSTS website www.nsts.org. uk where you can find much of this information, along with details of where to find a test centre in your area. Anyone applying professional pesticides must have their equipment tested. This includes horticulture and fruit but also sprayers working in the amenity sector. Ranging from pavements and highways, rail lines and stations, school and sports grounds and golf courses, amenity has an important role to play and it is vital in the public spaces they operate that equipment is in the best condition to apply pesticides safely and accurately.

Cover crop inoculant launched to improve soil health
A new biological soil inoculant developed to boost cover crops and, more significantly, pass on a soil health legacy to following cash crops A new biological soil inoculant developed to boost cover crops and, more significantly, pass on a soil health legacy to following cash crops has been launched by bio-fertiliser specialists PlantWorks. An extension to the Kentbased company's Smart Rotations product range, the SR2 formulation works by establishing a beneficial microbiological population in the soil that enhances crop performance. Specifically, the inoculation boosts the crop's ability to take up essential nutrients, improves drought tolerance and water use efficiency, and imparts other benefits such as increased resistance to pests and diseases. Developed by PlantWorks' own team of microbiologists in conjunction with academic partners, SR2 comprises five species of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and a specific consortium of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). Trials with cover crops including species such as vetch, crimson clover, black oats, buckwheat and yellow trefoil have demonstrated significant improvements in foliar fresh weight following application of the SR2 formulation (Fig. 1 trials summary). "We have demonstrated through our research programme the very positive effects of using mycorrhizal fungi with cover crops," says Jamie Stotzka, head of the farming team at PlantWorks. "Specifically,
18 | Agri News
we have recorded better establishment, stronger rooting and increased biomass in these crops. "However, the really important potential for this new technology is the improvement of soil biology for the benefit of the following crop. This is particularly important in rotations that include crops that do not support mycorrhizal fungi, such as oilseed rape and sugar beet, where the inoculated cover crop can be used to restore depleted soils. "Our research has shown how the addition of mycorrhizal fungi to the soil effectively increases the uptake surface area of plant roots, by up to 700 times, making them healthier and more efficient at collecting water and nutrients. Cover crops, and particularly mixtures including legumes, are excellent hosts for mycorrhizal fungi, and therefore provide a very good opportunity
to improve the soil biology, to the benefit of following crops. With what is effectively an extended root area, crops gain further advantage from other beneficial soil organisms that can directly improve yield and plant health, and hence the mycorrhizal fungi work so effectively in combination with the plant growth promoting rhizobacteria." Supplied as a dry granule, SR2 should be applied directly at the time of cover crop drilling (as precisely as possible into the seed zone, using a granular applicator, drilled or broadcast), or farmers can request that their seed supplier includes the inoculum with their seed mixture. The recommended retail price of a 10 litre pack to treat one hectare is ÂŁ39.00 + VAT. Details of where to obtain SR2 are available at: http://smart. plantworksuk.co.uk/distributors/

We face turbulent times in the agricultural machinery industry, with cost, staffing and competition pressures, and also with restructuring in the dealer sector as some manufacturers go ‘full line’ in the hope of securing more business from their dealerships. Argo is taking a different path, continuing to specialise in what it does best, producing well-engineered and performance tractors for all sectors, and promoting and supporting independent dealerships free to decide on the products they sell. I’m looking forward to steering the AgriArgo business and encouraging more farmers and contractors to consider a Landini or McCormick for their next tractor.” Commenting on Ray Spinks’ decision to step down, Mr Morra said: “Ray has experienced many roles with us in manufacturing, sales and management, and he was pivotal in the re-introduction of the McCormick brand back in 2001. For the past 10 years, he has dedicated his knowledge and experience to the running of AgriArgo UK Ltd and he now deserves some wellearned downtime. On behalf of the Morra family and Argo Tractors, we thank Ray for his contribution and dedication over the years and wish him well for the future.”

Buildings focus: New air scrubber reduces ammonia
A first-of-its-kind air scrubber and climate control system has been installed at H Timmis, a poultry farm in Shropshire. A first-of-its-kind air scrubber and climate control system has been installed at H Timmis, a poultry farm in Shropshire, with the aim of reducing ammonia and improving bird welfare and productivity.
from IPT Technology. “They are also quieter than conventional systems. Bring together all these features and the result is a calm and controlled environment for optimum bird comfort and productivity”.
VentMax is a 4-in-1 air scrubber, heating, cooling and ventilation system, manufactured by IPT Technology. It was installed in two 50,000 bird broiler sheds in October 2017 and is currently operating through its fourth bird crop cycle. The units are installed externally to the building and filter all air that leaves the sheds, removing dust particles. The technology can reduce ammonia and odour emissions by up to 90%, a feature that proved instrumental in helping H Timmis gain planning consent for expansion from the Environment Agency.
The VentMax units are smart and use programmed algorithms to calculate the required shed temperature and sensitive measurement technology to quickly adapt to changes in outdoor conditions.
But the air scrubbing system is only part of VentMax’s functionality. As well as cleaning the outgoing air, the units also filter the incoming air and provide controlled ventilation and temperatures throughout the sheds. Already they are starting to prove their ability to deliver superior climate control functionality, leading to improved air quality and better internal conditions. “VentMax units combine advanced ventilation technology with intelligent controls to manage air pressure, air movement and temperature,” says John Gill
24 | Agri News
“The heat demand in our broiler sheds always starts high and gradually falls depending on the stage of the bird growth cycle,” says farm owner Rob Timmis. “This winter, despite challenging weather conditions, VentMax has ensured a constant, regulated indoor environment with temperature drifts no higher than +/- 0.5 degrees”. The VentMax units work in tandem with a ground source heat pump system which provides a sustainable source of heating and cooling. “VentMax utilises passive and active cooling to maintain cooler temperatures in hot weather, reducing the need for disruptive tunnel ventilation systems and removing the risk of wind chill,” adds Gill. “By improving the ventilation of a shed, you can prevent falling cold air from affecting the quality of your litter, thus removing the burden and cost of spreading additional bedding and reducing the risk of hock burn.”
At H Timmis Farm the sheds also have the added benefit of underfloor cooling which is particularly effective at taking heat away, because the heatgenerating birds are close to the ground. Removing only a few degrees of heat helps reduce the microbial activity within the litter, and, consequently reduces ammonia and odour. “Bird welfare is very important to us and we constantly strive to optimise the internal conditions of our units,” says Timmins. “We’re very impressed with the level of control we have over the temperature and humidity in our sheds with VentMax. We’re already seeing improvements in the internal environment compared to our other sheds and there’s potential to optimise our crop performance further.” With energy efficiency high on many farmers’ agendas, VentMax offers the added benefit of acting as a heat recovery system: recovering up to 70% of waste heat leaving the sheds and using it to heat the incoming air. “It seemed crazy to us that all the excess heat from poultry sheds was being wasted into the atmosphere, so we decided to incorporate a heat recovery system into our design to improve energy efficiency,” says Gill. “This means recovered heat gets used first, before utilising the ground source heat pumps, helping to keep energy costs to a minimum.”
Vets raise concerns about how migration would play out in reality
BVA has responded to the Migration Advisory Committee’s (MAC) report on European Economic Area (EEA) migration. BVA has responded to the Migration Advisory Committee’s (MAC) report on European Economic Area (EEA) migration, welcoming the evidencebased approach but raising concerns about how some proposals will translate in the real world, especially for vets carrying out vital public health roles. The report explores current and likely future patterns of EEA migration into the UK and makes a series of recommendations for designing the UK’s postBrexit system for work-based immigration. The Committee sets out a general principle that policy changes should make it easier for higher-skilled workers to migrate to the UK than lower-skilled workers. It recommends that EU citizens should not necessarily be preferred over non-EU migrants, on the assumption that UK immigration policy will not form part of an agreement with the EU. The report also recommends that the cap on the number of migrants under Tier 2 should be abolished, with existing salary thresholds maintained.
Responding to the report, John Fishwick, BVA President, said: “We would be concerned about how some of these recommendations would play out in reality given the veterinary profession’s high dependence on the EU for workforce supply. Nearly half of vets registering to work in the UK every year come from the EEA, so it’s critical that any changes to migration policy are designed to maintain capacity and guard against sudden shortages rather than introducing new layers of bureaucracy such as the onerous application for licences to sponsor employees or restrictions on flexible movement between roles. “While it makes sense to create a level playing field for the migration of skilled workers after Brexit, this could hit parts of the sector hard if the Immigration Skills Charge is extended to the recruitment of EU workers. In the abattoir industry, where 95 per cent of Official Veterinarians monitoring animal welfare standards and upholding food safety in the supply chain hail from overseas, mainly from the EU, introducing a charge would be detrimental both to businesses and public
health. We would urge for the recommendation to be reviewed ahead of implementation before it can do lasting damage in this vital area of the workforce. “It is no mean feat to assess the impact of EEA migration across all sectors and regions of the UK and the committee should be applauded for producing an extremely wide-ranging and evidence-based report, which recognises the valuable contribution that migrants make across UK industries. However, we will continue to engage with MAC and the Home Office to ensure that the veterinary profession’s special circumstances, as well as the multiple benefits that EU vets and the wider workforce realise across animal health and welfare and public health, are considered and championed. “The committee’s next report – on the Shortage Occupation List – is the one that the veterinary profession will be awaiting with bated breath. BVA has worked hard to make a strong case for reinstating vets on the list; this would deliver lasting impacts and is the best place to start to stave off a crisis in workforce capacity.”

NFU showcasing British farming at party conferences The NFU is bringing the best of British farming to political party conferences this year when it hosts fringe events
The NFU is bringing the best of British farming to political party conferences this year when it hosts fringe events and takes its exhibition stand to Liverpool and Birmingham. Fringe events are being jointly held with the Food and Drink Federation at all party conferences, which started this week at the Liberal Democrats conference in Brighton. The events will debate ‘What should the UK’s future food policy look like?’ After the NFU’s first awardwinning exhibition stand at the Conservative party conference last year, it will be hosting an additional exhibition at the Labour
26 | Agri News
Visitors to the stand will be able to sample the best of British produce and celebrate the vital role farming plays in producing safe, traceable and affordable food for Britain.
NFU President Minette Batters said: “This is a vital time for British food and farming and it is clear there is significant parliamentary backing for our sector at this crucial time, particularly as the Agriculture Bill begins its passage through Parliament.
The importance of food and farming to the country will be highlighted to those visiting the stand, as well as the role of farmers’ maintaining and enhancing the countryside.
“Just last week we saw over 140 MPs support Back British Farming day and it was great to see the entire Shadow Cabinet show their commitment to the sector.
Delegates will have the opportunity to pledge their support to British farming and will also be able to experience harvest in a virtual reality experience in a Massey Ferguson red tractor.
“This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase our vibrant industry to thousands and I am proud to take the best of British farming to the party conferences.”

Effective Poultry House Cleaning Steve Birchall Poultry House Cleaning Services High pressure powerwashing, disinfectant and cleaners With the poultry industry experiencing more than its fair share of problems over the past 12 months or so no poultry producer can afford to hinder flock performance by allowing a build up of micro organisms. Even low disease levels drag profits back and skimping on the cleaning routine between flocks is false economy, says Lancashire based cleaning specialist Steve Birchall. “There is no opportunity these days to rest buildings between flocks. Turnaround times are tight and it is, therefore, vital that buildings are not only throughly cleaned but disinfected as well, and if there has been a problem
the cleaning and disinfection treatment should take account of it” says Steve, who has been operating a nationwide poultry contract shed cleaning business for over 30 years. His three teams are equipped to carry out whatever cleaning regime producers require and he suggests a good standard routine for anyone who wants the best safeguard. After the litter has been removed, the building and any equipment either retained inside or taken out should be power washed at about 2,500 psi with a combined cleaner/ sanitizer/deodorizer, which should remove some of the 80% of micro organisms at this stage.
“Older buildings are often more difficult to clean than modern ones”, Steve says, “However, if you are going to do the job at all, then it is worth doing properly and you have to take sufficient time, particularly in breeder or laying units where nest boxes and equipment have been in place for 12 months or more. Broiler units with a six or seven day turnaround are less difficult. However, people who prefer to do what is a rather unpleasant job themselves often get rather jaded before it has been done properly. If there are other enterprises on the farm, they have to keep breaking off to do other work.
