Domestic System Domestic System is an economic and social change produced during XVIII century.

Its organization was based in a merchant that distributed the raw material and the necessary tools by rural families. They worked at home and the machinery wasn't complex. They produced textiles of linen or wool. This progress of production was destinated to the exportation. Finally, these products were finished and sold in the city. Then in factories cotton replace wool

Industrial Colonies The industrialization was the industrial process that began in XVIII century. The growth of the Catalan Industry was difficult because there wasn’t natural and energetic resources and its dependence of Spanish market.

Industrial colonies were a type of installations situated in rural zones. A colony was formed near the factory and people who worked in the factory lived there. The owner had a paternalist relationship with the workers.

When and where were created industrial colonies? In Catalonia the first industry was textile. Colonies were founded in the XIX century near rivers to use the its force, more economical than the vapour. This social relationship and organization produced less labour problems. The worker’s life was very controlled to avoid problems with trade unions.

The industry in Catalunya was situated along the principal rivers. The most important river is ‘Llobregat’, and as we can see, almost all the industries are situated near it. So the great majority of the industries are situated near Barcelona, this way the exportation of the products was easier.

Industry Situation

Guell Colony It is one of the oldest colony in Catalonia. The Guell family employed the famous architect Antoni Gaudi to build the church. The Crypt is the most original building of the town. If it had been finished, would be one of the most daring buildings of GaudĂ. In 1914, GaudĂ left the project.

Outside One of the most significant aspects of the church is the variety of materials used, including basalt and limestone, burnt ceramic bricks, ceramics. Despite remaining unfinished, the church represents a high point in Gaudí’s work.

Inside The Colònia Güell church includes numerous examples of Gaudí’s typical applied arts. The stained-glass windows incorporate ornamental “trencadís” and mosaics with religious symbols on the exterior of the church. Hyperbolic paraboloids arch are used both for the walls and the vaults The apparent simplicity is based in a complex and original building methode.

Mosaic In the cript you can see an example. It’s a “trencadís” of ceramics, often used by Gaudí.
