FRIDA KAHLO SERIES Agustina Casas Sere-Leguizamom

NEW SELF-‐PORTRAITURE SERIES BY AGUSTINA CASAS FEATURING VENEZUELAN DESIGNER PILAR TARRAU AS BELOVED MEXICAN ARTIST FRIDA KAHLO Agus&na Casas most recent works features a series of four self-‐portraits of Venezuelan accessory designer Pilar Tarrau as Frida Kahlo. Inspired by Kahlo’s legacy and use of color and aesthe&c, Casas and Tarrau decided to join forces and began conceptualizing the new series in lieu of Tarrau’s limited-‐edi&on luxury brand purses, “Within The Life of Nature,” a presenta&on of purses she designed as part of the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale’s exhibi&on, Frida, Rivera + Mexican Contemporary Art (February 26-‐May 26, 2015).

The self-‐portrait series is Casas most exci&ng works date, and combines her early talents in fashion design and primary studies in studio photography. In this series, Casas idea was to set up a contrast between recurring themes found in Kahlo’s pain&ngs, such as the prima donna character vs. the nun as holy relic martyr and vic&m, no&ons of femme and masculine dual sexuality, and the use of bright, vivid colors and symetric paWerns. All typical of Kahlo’s visual leimoIf which were influenced by her life’s struggles and observa&ons of indigenous cultures and European realism, symbolism and surrealism.

“This was one of my best projects, and really embodies a deeper visual presenta&on of Tarrau’s crea&ve spirit and talents. Frida’s self portraits truly lived on and into these portraits I created. Throughout my work, I seek to embed a vibrant and colorful dialogue between icons of history, society and poli&cs. I create a new digital art approach to concepts of iconography, pop culture, poli&cs and history. My work is a visual s&mulator and I seek to inspire the mind and emo&onal system of the human being to reflect and become more aware about the new world versus old values. The tools of modern technology are my paint brushes, and with that I create my art and digital portraits. My work’s beauty and intensity offer the viewer insight into how I see the world. I gets inspira&on in nature, mys&cism of ancient cultures, media and society, constantly reinven&ng the normal percep&ons and crea&ng a new view to see our world.” -‐-‐ Agus&na Casas
