Le Guerrier est une remarquable synthèse du travail de Vũ Cao Đàm des années 1970. Réalisée en 1973, cette peinture représente une des sources d’inspiration les plus fortes de l’artiste. Il rappelle ainsi la symbolique forte entourant les chevaux en Asie. Évoquant le prestige mais aussi le pouvoir, ils ont été maintes fois représentés par l’artiste. La figure humaine est également un sujet indissociable de l’art du maître. La silhouette tout en rondeur du guerrier mais aussi sa tenue traditionnelle vietnamienne sont caractéristiques.

Cette œuvre témoigne de l’évolution artistique dont fait preuve l’artiste dès les années 1950 marquées par son installation dans le sud de la France. Adoptant définitivement l’huile, médium occidental par excellence, Vũ Cao Đàm joue avec son pinceau pour apporter plus de nuances et un certain modelé. Faisant de cette touche brossée un véritable atout, l’artiste ne représente pas un arrière-plan figuratif mais le dresse subtilement d’une façon très avant-gardiste qui pourrait évoquer les compositions de son contemporain Zao Wou-Ki.

Người cưỡi ngựa là một tổng hợp đáng chú ý trong tác phẩm của Vũ Cao Đàm từ những năm 1970. Được thực hiện vào năm 1973, bức tranh này đại diện cho một trong những nguồn cảm hứng mạnh mẽ nhất của họa sĩ. Một con ngựa và một chiến binh, bức tranh là biểu tượng cho tác phẩm của ông. Nó cũng gợi lại biểu tượng mạnh mẽ xung quanh những con ngựa ở châu Á. Gợi lên uy thế và sức mạnh, chúng đã nhiều lần được ông khắc họa. Nhân vật cũng là một phần thiết yếu trong nghệ thuật của bậc thầy. Hình dáng tròn đầy của người lính và trang phục truyền thống Việt Nam của anh đều là những nét đặc trưng.

Tác phẩm này thể hiện sự phát triển nghệ thuật của họa sĩ từ những năm 1950, được đánh dấu bằng việc ông chuyển đến miền nam nước Pháp. Chắc chắn với việc sử dụng sơn dầu, vốn là chất liệu xuất sắc nhất của phương Tây, Vũ Cao Đàm chơi với cọ của mình để mang lại nhiều sắc thái và sự trau chuốt nhất định, họa sĩ đã không dùng một nền mang tính hình tượng. Thực tế, ông đã vẽ khéo léo, theo một cách rất tiên phong, gợi nhớ những sáng tác của Zao Wou-Ki đương thời.

Le Guerrier is a remarkable synthesis of Vũ Cao Đàm’s work from the 1970s. Made in 1973, this painting represents one of the artist’s strongest sources of inspiration. Composed of a horse and a warrior, this painting is emblematic of his work. It also recalls the strong symbolism surrounding horses in Asia. Evoking prestige but also power, they have been represented many times by the artist. The human figure is also an essential part of the master’s art. The round silhouette of the warrior and his traditional Vietnamese dress are both characteristic. This work demonstrates the artist’s artistic evolution from the 1950s, marked by his move to the south of France. Definitely adopting oil, which is the Western medium par excellence, Vũ Cao Đàm plays with his brush to bring more nuance and a certain elaboration. Making this brushed touch a real asset, the artist does not represent a figurative background. In fact, he subtly draws it up in a very avant-garde way that could evoke the compositions of his contemporary Zao Wou-Ki.
