WHY

FarmPress Group? What are the advantages of using the farm publications under the FarmPress Ltd. umbrella? These publications include The Farmer/Stockman AgViser (Central/Northern Alberta and B.C.), The Farmer/Stockman AdViser (Southern Alberta), Saskatchewan FarmLife (all of Saskatchewan) and Manitoba FarmLife (all of Manitoba). All four are the leading farm buyers’ guides in their respective markets.

Farm buyers guides versus editorially-based publications! That’s an issue agencies continually face when making advertising decisions on behalf of their clients. Unfortunately, farm buyers’ guides have been lumped into the same category as urban shoppers. Farm buyers guides are not “shoppers.” They are, in fact, an integral tool of nearly every farm operation. Farmers rely on their buyers’ guides on a daily basis to get equipment price comparisons, auction information and farm service information. The Farmer/Stockman AdViser, which has been in business for forty-five years, is in fact known as “The Farmer’s Bible.” In a survey taken of that same publication, 382 of 400 farmers used The AdViser to make buying decisions in the previous year. This is a truly significant figure. If reader usage is not enough to convince agencies to take a hard look at farm buyers’ guides, then the numbers should. At 123,100 circulation across the three prairie provinces, our publication group outcirculates the next closest editorial farm publication two fold. In Alberta our circulation is nearly three times that of the nearest paid circulation farm publication. (Canadian Advertising Rates and Data)

So, what are farmers and ranchers reading? In Western Canada the agricultural market is served at the grassroots primarily by publications such as The AgViser, AdViser and FarmLife. They are, indisputably, the only publications that are targeting specific geographic market segments while at the same time giving full coverage of that segment. Urban shoppers have their place, but carry with them a “bargain hunter” image. Farm buyers’ guides are different. They are a necessary “tool” for most agricultural producers and are broadly used by the vast majority of the readers they are distributed to. Farmers, in fact, view the advertising content in a buyers’ guide in the same light as most other readers view editorial content. To them it is important “information” packaged as advertising. The most heavily read section in one of Western Canada’s major editorially-based farm publications is, in fact, its classified ad section.

Farmers want to read information that is most significant to them. In Southern Alberta, for example, farmers are more interested in advances in irrigation technology than in dryland durum wheat farming in Central Saskatchewan. Each of our four farm buyers’ guides reflects the unique characteristics of farming in the area it serves. Other publications, out of necessity, must take a broad brush approach. Take a good, hard second look at the agricultural media which contributes most directly to farmers’ buying decisions. Businesses who do business every day with farmers use farm buyers’ guides like the AdViser, AgViser or FarmLife almost exclusively. Consider the FarmPress option. We make it simple. We make it effective. We create business.
