Grain Storage as a Marketing Tool Changes in farm practices, management and economic conditions have allowed storage of grain to become a potentially valuable marketing tool. At present, the agricultural situation is seeing: • very strong market conditions for most crops • present availability of alternative storage systems • low interest rates • volatile prices for most crops, with price movements sudden and sharp “Farmers are planning now for marketing of their future crops into better price scenarios, and storage is one tool they may consider using more frequently,” says David Wong, market specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development. “Markets provide a storage signal to growers when price is considered low, and basis considered wide/weak. “In the past, grain was physically moved to meet cash flow needs and grain bin space was limited. With current market conditions good, pricewise, for most crops, bills can be paid using a smaller portion of overall
delivering/signing deferred delivery contracts. However, if one thinks there is still potential upside to the market, the “physical” grain contracted for delivery can be replaced by a futures position. “Another advantage of storage is time – time to stay current on up-todate market outlooks, giving growers more opportunity to evaluate which direction markets move, and make better selling decisions,” says Wong. “Downside price risk on stored grain can be managed by using other marketing tools (put options) but an additional cost would be added.” Lost interest and bin depreciation/or bag costs are the major additional costs that must be measured when considering storing grain. However, advantages could outweigh costs. The advantages of farm storage include: • avoiding selling into seasonally low markets (fall) • avoid selling into markets when basis levels are weak • avoiding line-ups at the buyer’s facilities • manage cash flow for income
sales. However, once bills have been paid, storage of unpriced grain can result in additional profit.” With more growers becoming familiar with grain bags, and others having condo space at local elevators, more grain can now be stored for longer periods of time. This allows producers to wait for a better price. “Longer term storage of grain is profitable depending upon changes in prices and basis levels,” says Wong. “Price rises must be sufficient to cover storage and interest costs. Producers are aware that, in normal years, supply is greatest at harvest, resulting in pressure on commercial handling facilities and lower prices to growers. This is typically reflected in basis levels offered to growers (wide/weak basis levels). Once deliveries subside, competition amongst buyers will become more competitive, with narrowing basis levels occurring as we head into spring.” Storing grain until either basis levels or cash prices improve can easily pay as a storage return. For crops with a futures market, lower basis levels can be taken advantage of by
tax purposes • allow storage for seasonally purchased grains (eg: forage seed), especially if the crop is kept more than one growing season thus avoiding low prices Limitations of farm storage should also be noted, those being: • grain is held longer, resulting in greater chance of spoilage, loss of condition, or theft • extra cost for storage facilities, either bins or bags • weather may hamper future delivery commitments • interest rates could increase “Farm grain storage can be a valuable marketing tool,” says Wong. “If used correctly, it can increase one’s net returns. Watch the market, and don’t get too greedy. It may be better to empty bins earlier and sell at a profit than to speculate by holding onto excess grain. Remember, markets will change over time. Storing grain will give you more time to make your marketing decisions, and can allow you to take advantage of either rising markets or weaker basis.

Spring Time, Decision Time Spring is the time to make the major decisions related to crop inputs; how much fertilizer to apply, availability of seed, seeding rate and pest control programs all need to be considered. One of the biggest costs of seeding is fertilizer. Despite lower natural gas prices, fertilizer prices are staying up. With such a major investment in fertilizer, it pays to carefully consider the amount and placement of this crop input. “Fertilizer is either the number one or two biggest cost of putting in a crop,” says Harry Brook, crop specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development. “Making an informed decision on fertilizer requires good information, usually in the form of a soil test. “Soil testing can be done in one of several ways. A compilation of samples from all over the field can be gathered, giving a good average rating for the entire field. Benchmarking is another approach where an identified area is tested year after year and the changes to that one site are indicative of the whole field. With the increased use of precision farming, there is now a third type of testing, and it is much more in-depth. Using multiple samples, yield maps and GPS, maps are being generated linking productivity to different zones in the field.” Regardless of your soil test, the information is important in reflecting nutrient availability for the year’s crop. A major part of the nutrients incorporated into the crop is from the soil organic matter. Throughout the growing season, the soil organic matter will be breaking down and providing nutrients
for crop growth. The higher the organic matter in the soil, the more nutrients it can provide for the crop. If you think of it as a nutrient bank account, then high organic matter in the soil gives you a cushion for your growing crop. In years where the crop may be underfertilized, organic matter can provide some of the extra nutrients needed if growing conditions improve. “Like a bank account, however, you can’t keep taking out without putting back in,” says Brook. “Deposits can take the form of a green manure crop, applying more fertilizer, growing a pulse crop or putting the land into permanent forage with legumes. The highest organic matter levels in soil are currently found in the black soil zone. As a rule, black soils contain about four to six per cent organic matter, dark brown soils contain three to four per cent and brown and dark grey wooded soils contain two to three per cent. Grey wooded soils can contain as little as one to two per cent. Zero tillage and the retention of crop residues on the soil surface have helped to increase some organic matter levels. “Organic matter functions not only as a nutrient bank account, it also improves soil structure and soil tilth. It improves moisture penetration and retention in the soil. Low organic matter soils often have problems with puddling and crusting of the soil surface, creating emergence problems. Improved moisture holding capability in the soil also helps growing crops withstand dry conditions. Its value cannot be underestimated. Soils with very high organic matter content also can
have problems. Usually, they are low in some trace minerals, especially copper and are often very acidic.” As a rough rule, there is about a pound of nitrogen for every 0.1% organic matter in the soil, depending on moisture conditions. Too dry and the soil organisms cannot breakdown as much organic matter. Too wet and denitrification becomes a problem. Denitrification occurs when soils are drowned in the spring for extended periods. Nitrogen, either fall fertilized or from the soil, will convert from nitrate, the plant absorbable nutrient, into N2, nitrogen gas which is then lost to the atmosphere. With all this information, what does it mean to the producer? Because of the cost of fertilizer and its importance to the ultimate crop yield, it pays to spend some time fine tuning a fertilizer program. A useful tool to help producers is the AFFIRM program. It is a free downloadable program that can be found on Alberta Agriculture’s website. This program takes the past year’s yields, current soil test results, expected moisture conditions and the intended crop type, and comes up with some recommended fertilizer rates. It can be used to calculate return per dollar invested and also generates producer probability curves for various cropping alternatives. It also will take into account the use of crop insurance to reduce risk. “When making fertilizer plans for 2012, it only makes sense to use every tool available to maximize the return on your crop input investments,” says Brook. “AFFIRM is one of the tools that can help.”

In total, more than 1,900 agricultural and other industrial equipment items were sold at this one-day unreserved public auction—a new Saskatoon site record.
