EarthBox® Helps Students to Get Growing When Rod Sirman, owner of Greenland Garden Centre near Sherwood Park, first heard about EarthBox®, he immediately saw the potential for sales with urban gardeners. Specifically, those who wanted to grow their own vegetables and herbs but were living in condos or residences with small yard spaces. “We like to keep up with the trends, and our customers were telling us they wanted to grow their own tomatoes, herbs and salad vegetables,” says Sirman. “In confined spaces, it was difficult for them to grow their own food and we saw this as a great opportunity to provide a portable garden that could be used indoors or outdoors.” An EarthBox® container gardening system consists of a three-foot long, wheeled growing box and soilless potting mix. EarthBoxes® work very well outdoors, and with the addition of two grow lights, can be used indoors all year long. “We decided to become the western Canadian distributor for this product as we realized that there was a market for a growing system with seniors and people interested in growing healthy foods,” says Sirman. “Tomato varieties such as Mega, peppers and herbs are what most people are interested in growing.” One person who saw the potential for EarthBox® beyond the regular retail trade was Brent Andressen, agriculture education coordinator with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development. “I realized right away that this could be a great teaching and learning opportunity for school students, so I contacted Rod to see if we could order Earthboxes for classroom use,” said Andressen. Using funding from Growing Forward, Andressen organized a three-year pilot project that saw 20 schools participating, from kindergarten to Grade 12 classes. Each class was provided with their own EarthBox® poly-resin container and soilless mixture. Some schools used the boxes outdoors as a summer garden while others grew herbs and vegetables indoors with grow lights. The classes selected their own seeds and submitted receipts for their purchase. “We encouraged the students to think about what kind of foods or meals they could make with the vegetables or herbs they grew, and many selected seeds and varieties of
vegetables to make a salsa, a salad or a soup,” says Andressen. “This concept works really well as it introduces students to a variety of vegetables and herbs, and encourages them to explore new flavours and foods that are part of a healthy lifestyle,” says Andressen. “Growing a garden can also have a strong influence on helping students make decisions about what types of foods are healthy and encouraging them to include such products in their daily diet. The students also learned about problem solving, science, cooperation, nutrition and food preparation while they were tending their indoor gardens.” Teachers in the project helped develop a Guide to School Gardens in Alberta that includes background information, teaching lessons, activities and suggested resources to augment the gardening project. “An example of taking learning to the next level is the culinary arts program at Harry Ainlay Composite High School in Edmonton,” notes Andressen. “These students grow the herbs they use in meals prepared for the school cafeteria, providing practical application in schools and helping increase awareness of healthy foods amongst all students. Growing herbs also saves the school thousands of dollars in food costs each year.” At the conclusion of the three-year program, Andressen conducted a short evaluation on the impact of the program. “Nearly 78 per cent of the teachers reported an increased awareness and consumption of healthy foods by students.” Though the program was promoted only through word of mouth, it was featured in schools from across the province, and Alberta Agriculture didn’t know how popular it would become. As the pilot was conducted, nearly 80 more schools heard about the concept and have taken the initiative to start the program on their own. Meanwhile, Sirman sees a steady demand for this gardening system as more people become interested in growing their own healthy foods in confined spaces. For about $100, schools and individuals can set up their own garden system. The development of this article was supported in part by Growing Forward, a federal, provincial, territorial initiative.
