You might think having John Deere compare their tractors to ours would make us a little heated.

However, with our SCR emissions system, it's hardly an issue.

Deere says they want to compare tractors. We’ll play along if they can stand the heat. Because while our emissions systems treats the exhaust after it leaves the engine, their system sends the exhaust back in where it builds up heat – heat that can affect the needed size of cooling systems, wear components and the life of the tractor.

So if you're looking at a Fendt and a Deere, take a good look at the difference because there’s plenty.

And while Deere's latest attempt to compare themselves to Fendt may not have found its mark, they're certainly getting warmer.

Vegetables at the Alberta Farm Fresh School The Alberta Farm Fresh School 2015 is set for February 26-27, 2015, at the Pomeroy Inn & Suites on the Olds College campus and will have a lot to offer vegetable growers.

“This annual school has been running for over 25 years and is full of sessions geared to learning about direct market vegetable production and marketing, as well as connecting with producer peers and experts,” said Rob Spencer, commercial horticulture specialist, Alberta Ag-Info Centre, Stettler.

“Come and learn about soil, both soil biology and soil fertility, vegetable production using plastic mulch and low tunnels, and integrated weed management from leading experts. Take in a session on the ins and outs of value-adding and connecting with restaurants with unique products. Get a grasp on identifying current diseases and insects in Alberta vegetable crops, as well as biological control options, and learn about food safety and being more efficient in your farm operation.”

An Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD) researcher says we’re coming off of a pretty good year for faba beans in Alberta that brought with it some valuable lessons learned.

“This year we saw acreage go from 30K to close to 80k,” said Robyne Bowness, pulse research scientist, ARD, Lacombe. “We had more farmers growing faba beans this year, and farmers growing more acres.”

She said that there was a lot learned this year about growing this relatively new crop.

“We saw some herbicide residue issues this year we hadn’t seen before. We’re finding that faba beans are very sensitive to herbicides, and that they are actually used as an indicator crop in some areas to test for herbicide residue. We’ll have to keep an eye on this to see just how sensitive faba beans are and watch which herbicides we use the year or two before.”

Another area of interest was insects and the effect they might have on faba beans. “Are bertha army worms going to be a major concern?

We don’t know. We do know lygus bugs are a big problem. There’s a lot of canola around and lygus bugs like to fly off the canola into the fabas.

We do have entomologists trying to get a handle on this.”

Bowness says another area of learning was around stresses on faba beans. “We knew faba beans were susceptible to heat but we were a bit surprised at how sensitive they are. And there were some areas in the province where we thought there was going to be enough moisture for faba beans but there wasn’t.

Frost was a problem this year as well because faba bean is a large, high moisture seed and cannot tolerate freezing temperatures. Many faba beans froze and turned black. This created concern about marketing a lower quality product.”

Bowness says she expects there will be even more faba bean grown this year. “I think we will see 100-120 K or more acres this year simply because the producers who like them are going to grow more, and new producers are looking to get in on the crop as well.”

In addition to the specific sessions, the school features a trade show, as well as a full social evening (including food) on the first evening (Thursday), featuring a visit and presentations of awards by the Honourable Verlyn Olson, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Develop-
