Tractor Rollovers Leading Cause of Farm Fatalities No time to think. No time to react. It takes about three-quarters of a second for a tractor to rollover. Accounting for one in five deaths, tractor rollovers are the leading cause of farm-related fatalities in Canada.

Equipping tractors with a rollover prevention system or ROPS and ensuring the operator wears a seatbelt has been proven to be 99 per cent effective in preventing death or serious injury in the event of a tractor rollover. Do all of your tractors have ROPS? Rollover protection is one of the safety strategies in a new farm management tool called the Canada FarmSafe Plan developed by the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association (CASA).

ROPS installed but virtually all makes and old models of tractors can be retrofitted with ROPS,” says Marcel Hacault, CASA executive director.

Male tractor operators aged 50 and older account for the highest number of rollover fatalities, reports an article published in the June issue of Chronic Diseases and Injuries in Canada. The report says this is likely because many older operators use tractors that were made before manufacturers routinely installed ROPS, thereby increasing their likelihood of a fatality during a rollover.

“Having ROPS is only half of the equation,” explains Hacault.

“The operator must also be wearing a seatbelt to stay in the safe area and not be thrown in harm’s way.”

The most common cause of a sideways rollover is driving too close to the edge of a ditch or steep slope. Always drive at least 1.5 metres away from the edge of a ditch or steep slope.

Backwards rollovers usually occur when pulling-out or towing machines, dragging logs or implements, or removing stumps or trees. To avoid backwards rollovers, never hitch a tow chain above the draw bar of the tractor.

When it comes to farm safety, ‘use ROPS and wear a seatbelt’ are words to live by.

Everyone Has a Role in Farm Safety I Have a Role is geared to increase awareness of the many different roles that Albertans can adopt to promote farm safety. The launch of this campaign is set to coincide with Canadian Agricultural Safety Week which runs March 11 to 17, 2012.

“I Have a Role will place an emphasis on responsibilities in agricultural safety, whether it’s the role of a parent, farm owner, worker, equipment dealer or member of a community group,” says Kenda Lubeck, farm safety coordinator, Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development, Grande Prairie. “It’s important for rural Albertans to recognize their part in promoting and enhancing safety in agriculture. Each position is vital, whether it’s leading by example, creating a safety program or discussing safety with loved ones.”

Farm-related injuries and deaths are preventable. However, Alberta regularly has an average of 17 farm-related fatalities per year.

“It’s vital that those living and working in the agriculture industry recognize and reduce the hazards involved in farming,” says Lubeck. “One of the biggest roles is encouraging and enabling farm owners and workers to adopt safe work practices through promoting farm safety.”

Farm safety can be promoted across Alberta in a variety of ways.

“Those involved in clubs and organizations can enhance farm safety in their communities through education such as a first aid program, WHMIS or equipment operation training course,” explains Lubeck.

“Another avenue is for clubs such as 4-H to have regular dis-

cussion around safety topics such as livestock handling, ATV operation or personal protective equipment. A farm safety poster contest or an organized farm safety area at a local ag fair or similar event is a great way to promote farm safety to children and families. On the farm, individuals can take on many roles from developing a safety plan to having safety discussions around the kitchen table” A twine ribbon (twibbon), similar to the pink breast cancer ribbon is the symbol for the I Have a Role campaign.

“The ribbon represents each individual’s unique role in promoting farm safety,” says Lubeck.

“The twibbon has a different meaning to anyone who wears it.

It can be made at home by tying a loop in a section of sisal or jute twine and using a safety pin to secure it to a piece of clothing.”

The I Have a Role campaign is designed to encourage conversation among Albertans and put the words “farm safety” into action.

“Discussion inevitably emphasizes safe work practices and proper risk management,” adds Lubeck. “Keeping safety top of mind is vital to minimize risks.”

The Alberta Farm Safety Program has resources available to increase awareness and promote farm safety in rural communities.

As well, the newly developed SafeThink Agriculture is being delivered across Alberta to educate farm owners and workers on safe thinking strategies that can be applied to any task.
